The Ipatiev Monastery, also known as the Hypatian Monastery, is a significant historical site located on the bank of the Kostroma River in Russia. Founded around 1330, it features relics such as ancient icons, books, and vestments. The monastery played a crucial role in Russian history as it was where Mikhail Romanov was elected Tsar in 1613, marking the beginning of the Romanov dynasty's rule.
A must-visit. The Ipátiev Monastery in Kostroma, Russia, is historically significant as the site where Mikhail Romanov was elected Tsar in 1613, beginning the Romanov dynasty's rule. It later gained tragic notoriety during the Russian Revolution when Tsar Nicholas II and his family were held there before their execution in 1918, marking the end of imperial Russia. Today, the monastery's restored churches and serene atmosphere attract visitors interested in exploring Russia's imperial past and reflecting on the profound political shifts that shaped modern Russian history.

Interesting but I thought it was less beautiful than e.g. Rostov Velikiy. Popular with local tourists.

Khram Svyatogo Ravnoapostol'skogo Knyazya Vladimira, also known as the Church of St. Vladimir, is a stunning architectural gem that has recently undergone significant restoration. Nestled near the picturesque embankment, this temple stands as a symbol of resilience and faith amidst its tumultuous history. The surrounding area features the newly revitalized Kostroma Kremlin and Central City Park, making it an ideal spot for both reflection and exploration.
This place is beutiful. It is newly renovated and a must stop if you are near. Looks stunning and really massive. Also, they have guided tours where you can go on top to see the bells and the view is just must see. Lot of interesting facts through history about this place. I do recommend to visit and enjoy. It is as beutiful outside as it is inside.
Anamarija Č — Google review
(Translated by Google) Well, thank God, they restored it. And even from the embankment this temple looks simply luxurious. Now here is the universal territory of both the newly recreated Kostroma Kremlin and the Central City Park. Be that as it may, the place is iconic, a place of prayer and, although notably defaced by the Bolsheviks, it has not lost its significance and is actively being revived. That's okay!

The Resurrection Church on the Debra in Kostroma is a must-see attraction, boasting a captivating redbrick color that adds to its allure. This remarkable architectural masterpiece exudes holiness and authenticity, impressing visitors with its ancient charm. However, it should be noted that photography is prohibited within the church, and women are advised against wearing pants or short skirts while entering.
Must see in Ярославль . Impressive architecture, but located in a place which is really hard to arrive at. But it’s worth it. Just be careful if you come here through the road along the river.

Must see in Kostroma. I enjoyed the redbrick color that's so beauty of The Resurrection Church on the Debra in Kostroma. Once again, here I feel the holiness of this church. Do not take photos inside and women are not allowed to wear pants or short skirts into the church.

(Translated by Google) Fairytale church. We were in Kostroma for five days, lived at the other end of the city, and every day, on purpose, we walked several kilometers along the embankment just to see this beauty. XVII century. For some time the church served as a cathedral. The original interior has been preserved. Without electricity, by candlelight, you find yourself in the atmosphere of past centuries. It even seemed to us that we were completely alone in the church. We took a couple of photos of the interior of the church. And immediately a couple of competent parishioners or ministers appeared. They began to talk loudly and convincingly about the sin of taking photographs, that we had completely lost the path to salvation and the impossibility of repentance. We did not risk entering into a dispute with them, turned off our phones and continued our inspection. Probably, it was necessary to receive a blessing, but the prohibition on filming was not clearly indicated, and there was no one in the church. Either way, this stunning church is a must visit.

(Translated by Google) The church is very nice, fabulous, akin to the temple in Korovniki in Yaroslavl. We ended up here after Christmas, when there was almost no one in the temple. There was a mysterious twilight inside. Apparently, all the churches looked something like this a hundred or more years ago, when there was no electricity yet and everything was illuminated by candles and torches.

(Translated by Google) The Church of the Resurrection on Debra is an Orthodox church in Kostroma, one of those monuments of art without which it is impossible to imagine the appearance of ancient Kostroma. The church gives a full picture of its artistic culture. The famous Church of the Resurrection is the only surviving temple in the city that dates back to the 17th century. The building is made of brick, decorated with white carved limestone, the walls are painted with bright checkered colors. In the interiors of the church, ancient murals from the 17th century have been preserved, which are of great artistic value. In the 1870s, the walls and vaults of the gallery were painted with oil paintings, hiding the original fresco painting of 1652. Some of these frescoes were uncovered in 1958–1961 by restoration artists. On the walls are depicted angels with scrolls recording the names of everyone entering the service and leaving the church before the end of the liturgy. There are also frescoes depicting scenes of the torment of sinners in hell. The bell tower of the Znamenskaya Church forms a single ensemble with the Church of the Resurrection. The “Holy Gate” of the fence is located on the western side of the church and is a brick structure with white stone details in the form of a two-span arch with a wide passage and a narrower passage. The northern aisle of the Three Saints with a hill of kokoshniks is single-domed. Its interior is the most ancient and complete. At the entrance to the Holy Gate, guests are greeted by mythological creatures: lion, unicorn, pelican, alkonost. The inside of the cathedral is beautifully decorated. The name of the church “on Debra” means that in ancient times a dense forest grew here. In Kostroma there were two “wilds” - the upper one, located on a mountain on the steep bank of the Volga, and the lower one, under the mountain.

(Translated by Google) Bright and slightly popular in appearance, the church is a bit reminiscent of St. Basil's Cathedral. At the same time, it does not look like a remake, which is something that many churches suffer from. I advise you to see this ancient temple.

(Translated by Google) One of the most beautiful churches in Kostroma. Built in 1645-1651 by craftsmen from Yaroslavl and Veliky Ustyug. From the inside, the entire space is covered with paintings, which were presumably made by the masters of Vasily Zapokrovsky’s artel, and the frescoes of the Three Saints chapel were made by Gury Nikitin and his artel. In 1913, Emperor Nicholas II and his family visited the temple. For a long time it served as the cathedral of the Kostroma diocese. Here, until 1991, one of the most revered Kostroma shrines, the Feodorovskaya Icon of the Mother of God, was preserved. Bogoyavlensky Convent, located in Kostroma, is a renowned Russian Orthodox monastery. It houses the ancient Feodorovskaya Icon of God's Mother and was established as Bogoyavlensky Monastery during the 15th century by Nikita, a disciple of St Sergius of Radonezh. This convent attracts numerous visitors and worshippers and is known for its peaceful ambiance. The presence of friendly nuns adds to the welcoming atmosphere.
A very crowded place full of tourists and parishioners.

(Translated by Google) Friday. Evening. It will soon begin to get dark and soon the Monastery will close for the night. The sun has already gone. A small, rather cramped, but amazingly landscaped area (as we noticed on our trip to the Monasteries, care in landscaping is generally inherent in women’s monasteries; in men’s, everything is simpler). Low cathedral. There are generally no such powerful voluminous temples as, for example, in the Kazan Monastery of Vyshny Volochok. Almost deserted. There is an evening service in the cathedral. Photography in the temple is not blessed, so there are no photos of the interior, although we spent some time in the temple we stood, listened to the service, and venerated the icon. Then we walked around the area a little. Quiet. Thankfully. Calmly.

(Translated by Google) That very rare case when 5 stars are not enough, I want to add a couple more. This was my first time at the monastery, I went to light a candle for my mother, for the operation. The Unction took place here, but despite this they told me everything and helped me get my bearings. I am not a frequent visitor to temples and did not know that I could only pay in cash. So they gave me candles, and wrote a note for my mother about health, supported me with words, and made a big gift for me and my mother. I left there with such inner peace and fulfillment that there was no trace of anxiety that something might go wrong during the operation. There was so much love, warmth, and acceptance in the sister’s words and in the atmosphere of this wonderful monastery. It really is just some kind of miracle. I thank with all my heart everyone I met there, and Mother Abbess Innokentia 🙏 (Original)

The sisters of the monastery will always support you with words and comfort you! Special words of gratitude to our dear Mother Innokentia! I always turn to her with all my sorrows and troubles, asking for prayers for my loved ones, for my sick dad. She will always listen, pray, and remember names! And her prayers are truly heard by God! After turning to her, everything always gets better in a miraculous way!!! The monastery houses the reliquary of St. Nikita of Kostroma. Last year I fell, the doctors said that I had a torn ligament in my leg, I could not walk, my leg was unbearably painful and swollen, and I was jumping on one leg. My husband brought me to the monastery, the sisters told me to touch the reliquary with my foot and pray to St. Nikita. I didn't believe it, but I did it anyway. The next morning a real miracle happened - my leg stopped hurting COMPLETELY, and a day later the swelling went away! If it hadn't happened to me, I wouldn't have believed it!!! What a wonderful and blessed place our monastery is! And I also really want the miraculous Feodorovskaya icon of the Mother of God to return here from the Cathedral of the Kostroma Kremlin!

(Translated by Google) I always went to Tikhon’s Church in Davydovskoe, but now new young clergy have appeared and all desire to go there has disappeared. Yesterday, on April 12, my husband and I went to confession, and on April 13, after serving the service, we went up to take communion and the priest refused to give communion to my husband, he said go and stand aside, we thought that he would come to him later, but alas, we left with nothing. When I came home, I decided to call the rector at the church, on the phone they asked the man who was calling, he replied that some woman, not realizing that I could hear everything, the rector called this priest, then I asked his last name, he answered, I won’t tell you., I decided that he was poorly prepared. My husband, pensioner, honorary citizen of the city, now he has problems with memory, in public he gets worried and it’s difficult to tell him, especially to remember prayers, his leg was operated on, but he defended the entire service, and the clergyman, one might say, simply kicked him out, made him an outcast. Such ministers have neither faith nor place in the church, much less go to them for confession, they exceed their authority. Instead of feeling light in the soul, they left with a heavy load. We won’t go there again! Orthodox church
The Church of the Ascension, located in the city center, has a rich history dating back to the 17th century. The original wooden church was mentioned in chronicles from 1628 and was later replaced by a stone temple building in 1654. Unfortunately, the church and bell tower were demolished in 1932 but restoration efforts began in 1986. The architectural monument now features an asymmetrical five-domed temple with a hipped bell tower.
(Translated by Google) The first mention of a wooden church on this site is contained in the Kostroma scribe book of 1628: “In the settlement on Debra there is a church with a meal of the Ascension of the Lord, and in it there are two altars: the Presentation of the Most Pure Theotokos, the icon of Vladimir and the wonderworker St. Nicholas.” Here there is also a “church place” of a previously existing temple in honor of the Ascension of the Lord. The stone Ascension Church - five-domed, two-pillared, three-absided - was erected to replace the previous wooden one around 1654. At the turn of the 17th-18th centuries, a refectory with a warm St. Nicholas chapel, consecrated in 1701, was added to the church from the west. Apparently, at the same time, a separate tented bell tower was erected near the temple. In the first half of the 18th century, the roof of the church was replaced with a hip roof, and the southern portal was turned into a window. In 1835, a vestibule was added to the church from the north. The brick building of the temple belongs to the style characteristic of the local architectural school, but has some features, including a wide cornice with a unique for Kostroma belt of pentagonal niches, widely known in architecture (especially Novgorod) of the 15th-16th centuries. The dome domes of the church, made of brick, were lined with glazed green tiles. At the beginning of the twentieth century, the Ascension Church was one of the most remarkable monuments of church architecture in Kostroma; it was studied by outstanding church historians - N.V. Pokrovsky, A.L. Golubtsov. The church clergy consisted of a priest and a psalm-reader. In the temple there were many icons of ancient writing (among which the image of the holy martyr Antipas, Bishop of Pergamon, was especially revered by believers), ancient tin vessels and an ark, and a 17th-century Gospel. The walls of the Church of the Ascension were painted with oil in the 19th century, and at the beginning of the 20th century they were decorated with glue painting. In 1922, after the separation of the renovationist group “Living Church” from the Russian Orthodox Church, the Ascension Church passed into the hands of renovationists, whose activities were actively supported by the authorities. However, in 1930 the church was closed. Initially, a dormitory for longshoremen and a warehouse were set up here, then - in 1932 - the temple building was transferred to a nearby mill plant for the construction of a canteen; At the same time, the five-domed structure that crowned the church was destroyed and the bell tower was destroyed. Later, in the early fifties of the twentieth century, the church building became a two-story residential building. In 1986, residents were evicted from the Ascension Church; During the subsequent restoration work (according to the design of the architect L.S. Vasilyev), it was possible to recreate the refectory and three-tier bell tower, but since 1991 the work was stopped. To this day, one of the few surviving stone Kostroma churches of the 17th century remains in disrepair...

Troitskiy Sobor Ipat'yevskogo Monastyrya, located in the Old Town of Kostroma, is a sight to behold. The exterior may seem modest, but the interior is a treasure trove of frescoes dating back to the 17th century. The baroque wooden carved iconostasis bears resemblance to that of the Cathedral of Procopius the Righteous in Veliky Ustyug.
(Translated by Google) From the outside, he looks quite modest and strict. But here it is inside!.. There is not a single centimeter in the interiors that is not recorded in frescoes! It’s been a long time since we’ve seen such a density of images, from the 17th century, and very well preserved. The baroque wooden carved iconostasis in the manner of execution of the carving is very reminiscent of the iconostasis in the Cathedral of Procopius the Righteous in Veliky Ustyug. The ringing voices of the guides somewhat distract from complete immersion in this beauty, but this is not a reproach to the temple; For complete immersion, you should come here during a church service.

In 1650, the archimandrite of the Ipatiev Monastery received a letter from Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich about the construction of a new cathedral with a side chapel on the site of the destroyed temple in the name of St. Mikhail Malein, the heavenly patron of Mikhail Fedorovich Romanov. Construction of the new Trinity Cathedral was completed in 1652. In 1652, work began on creating the iconostasis of the Trinity Cathedral, and two years later, in 1654, the interiors of the cathedral began to be decorated with frescoes. An artel of isographers, led by the royal icon painter from Kostroma Vasily Ilyin Zapokrovsky, was invited to perform them. But they were not destined to fully fulfill such an honorable and responsible order. In 1656, a plague epidemic began in Kostroma, which claimed the lives of most of the Kostroma residents, including V.I. Zapokrovsky. However, in two years the craftsmen created icons for the five-tiered iconostasis of the cathedral and partially painted the western gallery of the temple. Only 30 years later, work on painting the cathedral was continued. The artel of the famous royal icon painter Guriy Nikitin (Kineshemtsev), whose name among the masters of the royal icon-painting workshop stood on a par with Simon Ushakov, painted the cathedral with frescoes of the greatest artistic value in three summer months. Undoubtedly, the Trinity Cathedral represents the pinnacle of Russian monumental spiritual painting of the 17th century. The third stage in the creation (completion) of the decoration of the cathedral - 1911-1913. Completion of the painting of the temple galleries by the artel of Palekh isographers headed by N. VI в.)

The Church of St. Nicholas Trestino is an old and beautiful place of prayer, located in the village of Nikolo-Trestino in Kostroma province, Kostroma district. The church, built in 1790, offers a spiritual and holy atmosphere. It is a brick building with five domes and a bell tower, providing a picturesque view from the Kineshma highway. Visitors praise the comfortable and wonderful atmosphere inside this ancient temple.

The building is brick - five-domed in connection with the same bell tower and dome above it. The temple in Nikolo-Trestina is one of the few churches in the area that escaped closure during Soviet times... "The Nicholas Church of the village of Trestina, built in 1790 at the expense of parishioners, is a stone building, with the same bell tower and fence. The cemetery is in the fence of the church. There are three altars: in the summer church - in the name of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker; in the winter: northern - in the name of the Monk Gennady, the Kostroma and Lyubimograd miracle worker, and the holy Great Martyr Catherine; the southern one - in honor of the Holy Great Martyr Paraskeva Pyatnitsa. Among the local shrines, the image of St. Nicholas, according to local legend, is remarkable. Previously, in the place where the village is now, there was a swamp - a quagmire. Then Saint Nicholas appeared on a pine tree to an old peasant and drained the swamp. A church was built, and the resulting new village was named “Trestino” from the word “to shake,” quagmire. The image was on trial for a long time in the Ipatiev Monastery and only in 1889, thanks to the efforts of the parishioners and Mrs. Michurina, it was returned to the parish church. There is a guardianship and a temperance society at the church. Distance from Kostroma 9 versts.
