The Necropolis of Tarquinia, also known as the Necropolis of Tarquinia di Monterozzi, is a significant archaeological complex and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It features Etruscan tombs adorned with vibrant paintings depicting human figures and animals. The site, dating back to the 9th century BC and expanding from the 7th century BC, spans 20 hectares in Cerveteri.
That's a very interesting archaelogical site. The visit takes two hours as we saw all the tombs' chambers with their decoration. On the tombs' walls there are also paintings of fighting animals, banquet scenes, flowers and fruits. The price of the ticket is not expensive, considering that it also includes the visit to the Tarquinia Museum.

Nice. Lots of stairs. Well preserved. BUT only half of the necropolis is open to visitors due to PNRR renovation. they didn't tell us at the ticket office.
Massimo A — Google review
Very nicely set up situation for presenting and preserving Etruscan frescos. Half of it was closed for maintenance when we were there but what we were able to see made it well worth the trip.

Amazing Day trip from Rome with Scoot Around Rome , perfect timing, convenient best way to enjoy this and the other necropolis . Weather was amazing and we had time to see all the tombs.Very happy, a must !! thank you
Sim M — Google review
Absolutely unique archaeological site. Really worth the visit. Unfortunately, around 3/4 of the site and around 2/3 of the most famous tombs (including the most famous, of the Leopards) are under renovation for “at least” more 6 months and currently not accessible. I did not find this information anywhere before driving here.
Thomaz P — Google review
Wonderful archeological site. This was the second time I took our children here and It went really well. Children really like to check every tomb, go down the stairs, push the button that turns the light on and admire the paintings. The only thing is that this time the bar was closed but drinking water was available at the entrance.
Giulia T — Google review
It's a wonderful place rich in Italian history! Bravo to the Tuscany's wisdom and architecture! It will live for years and years!...earn for years and years!...be enjoyed for years and years! Glory to God, the author of all creation 🙏🙏🙏
Masereka R — Google review
The place is worth visiting. A green hill overlooking the fields outside the city. Filled with well preserved chambers/ tombs what are dug into the ground and "visitable". The admission which normally is just €8 for adults, was free on the 1st sunday of the month. Signs tell in italian and english the story behind each of the persons to which the tombs are devoted to. The simple architecture of the place, the scenery and the fact that a lot of work has been put in place to make this visitor friendly even for everyone make it certainly worth your time.

Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Tarquinia - Palazzo Vitelleschi is a must-visit museum housed in the magnificent Palazzo Vitelleschi, showcasing one of Italy's finest collections of Etruscan artifacts. The museum features an impressive array of Etruscan finds, including terra-cotta winged horses from the 4th century BC and a large collection of Etruscan and Roman sarcophagi and funeral objects.
Painted burial tombs and lots of etruscan artifacts. Additional exhibits and collection including Lippe painting.
Mark S — Google review
What a treasure! I definitely recommend this amazing museum. It probably hosts the richest collection of Etruscan art. You will dig into the past discovering their cults and their skills in working metals and rocks. The ticket (combined with the tombs is only 10 euros). The beautiful building of the museum is itself worth the price of the visit. I am not giving 5 stars because unluckily, the pieces at the museum are not well displayed. The narrative during the visit and the descriptions of the objects are missing. But worst of all, I didn’t see any indications in English. I’m saying this as an Italian, sorry but this is not acceptable in 2021!
Mario M — Google review
Very good museum fast and easy. With a lot of context and informations and it shows a lot of exemples. Only big problem, there is too little of English traductions, most of it is in Italian which makes it hard to understand the history of the Étrusques without knowing Italian.

The artefacts are wonderful, however too little info in English, very little explanation of details in English, quite expensive. Bizarre ticket vendor at the Necropolis, verbally abusive. Necropolis =disappointing, Museum in Tarquinia =nice. Overall, disappointing, discouraging.

Nestled just outside the historic center of Tarquinia, the Monterozzi Tomb of the Deer Hunt is a remarkable site within one of the most well-preserved Etruscan necropolises in existence. This ancient burial ground boasts around six thousand graves, many adorned with stunning frescoes that depict various themes, earning it recognition as a significant chapter in Italian art history.

(Translated by Google) Very interesting Etruscan necropolis located on a very green hill with many olive trees. The more or less frescoed tombs do not contain sarcophagi, which are however visible at the archaeological museum of Tarquinia, which I highly recommend.
ANDREA C — Google review
(Translated by Google) The necropolis is a true historical jewel, but it deserves an improvement in services to better accommodate the high number of tourists and school groups. It would be advisable to increase the number of bathrooms, which are often insufficient at peak times. The guided tours, although interesting, should be better calibrated according to the age of the students: more dynamic routes, with fewer verbal explanations and the addition of laboratory activities under the wooden gazebos would make the experience more engaging and effective. Furthermore, a service with microphone and earphones would improve listening, given that the guides' voices tend to get lost in the open space and in the crowd.

Palazzo dei Priori is a stunning medieval building located in the heart of the historic center.
(Translated by Google) Within Tarquinia's medieval walls, historic buildings preserve and display sumptuous works of art. There are also many religious buildings, dating primarily to the Romanesque period, such as the Church of San Martino, the Baroque Church of Suffragio, the Chapel of the Cross, and the Convent of San Francesco. Tarquinia's defensive system, still visible around the town today, is one of the city's artistic treasures. The towers, which lined and marked the perimeter of the city walls, had various functions: defense, service, and lookout. Particularly impressive is the Palazzo dei Priori, the fortified seat of political power.

Etruscopolis is a fascinating and unique site that offers guided tours for visitors. Although it may be challenging to locate due to its hidden entrance, the experience is described as extraordinary. The museum features detailed reproductions of paintings from several tombs, providing a closer look at the intricate details not easily visible behind glass doors in the actual tombs. Additionally, there is a perfect reconstruction of daily life in ancient civilization, offering an educational and engaging experience for children and teenagers.
Really enjoyed the museum and professional guided tour! The guide was amazing. Beforehand I visited etruscan necropolis and here in this museum could see detailed reproduction of paintings of several tombs with all details (normally you can’t see the details because of glass door in each tomb). Interesting reproduction of etruscan city, temples and houses. If you want to find museum, check the map on their website, otherwise on Google maps the red point is misleading
Olga K — Google review
Very unique experience underground Tarquinia. As I was explained by a very knowledgeable guide, this place represents the most realistic reconstruction of some of the most famous Etruscan tombs, homes, paintings and artifacts, all created by this former Mr. Omero, passed away in 2018, and whose life was unbelievably entwined with the Etruscan life, habits and artifacts. Definitely worth seeing.

The Duomo di Santa Margherita is a fascinating co-cathedral with a rich history, originally constructed between the 12th and 14th centuries. After suffering significant damage from a fire in 1643, it underwent several phases of reconstruction, blending various architectural styles over time. Notably, the church showcases stunning frescoes by Antonio da Viterbo, also known as il Pastura, which beautifully illustrate events in the life of the Virgin Mary.

(Translated by Google) Interesting co-cathedral, built in 1260, modified and enlarged several times, it was destroyed by fire in 1643 and immediately rebuilt. It was modified again in neoclassical style and further enlarged at the end of the 19th century. It still retains the apse, the related frescoes and the original high altar (16th century). The frescoes are attributed to Pastura. Of interest are the organ, entirely mechanical made by the Umbrian Morettini family, and two canvases by Giacinto Brandi. Porta di Castello, a stunning 15th-century gate, serves as an impressive entry point to the historic castle in Tarquinia. This architectural gem is flanked by two towers and features a high wall with a walkway above, known as resecata. Commissioned by G. Vitelleschi to protect against urban encroachment, it leads visitors to the enchanting Romanesque church of Santa Maria di Castello.
(Translated by Google) Part of the city walls of Tarquinia and leaning against the Torre Matilde of Canossa, the Porta di Castello dates back to the 15th century and was built in a similar way to the "Roman clavicula". (Translated by Google) First of all, you don't pay for tickets for Porta Castello. Medieval Tarquinia had a fantastic city wall. All the access gates to the city were with three doors one distant from the other. Between one gate and the other there was a stretch of road that ended in a funnel or had sharp curves so that the attackers found themselves within easy reach of the defenders who from the top of the walls unloaded boiling oil, pitch, stones and any other type of material. Castle gate depicted in your photo is, in reality, the second gate located near the Torrione di Matilde di Canossa. The first gate is located near the Church of Santa Maria in Castello, the Teresa and last one was the real entrance to the city. The Church and the entire area of the doors are called Castello because it is said that Matilda of Canossa had a Castle in that area and that she came to Tarquinia to deal with matters of great interest. I don't have photos on my phone but I can send them to you from the computer whenever you want them.

The Necropolis of Tarquinia is a captivating archaeological site that showcases the rich history of the Etruscans through its vibrant tomb paintings. Nestled on a green hill, this complex features well-preserved chambers filled with stunning depictions of human figures and animals, as well as scenes of banquets and nature. Visitors can explore these fascinating tombs, which are accessible for a modest admission fee—often free on the first Sunday of each month.

Wonderful archeological site. This was the second time I took our children here and It went really well. Children really like to check every tomb, go down the stairs, push the button that turns the light on and admire the paintings. The only thing is that this time the bar was closed but drinking water was available at the entrance.

Vitivinicola Biologica ETRUSCAIA is a hidden gem that promises an unforgettable experience. From the moment you arrive, you're enveloped in warmth and hospitality, thanks to Stefano, who guides you through the fascinating world of wine with genuine passion. The journey begins as you step into this enchanting place after a long trip from Rome, greeted by Lola the dog and welcomed by Olga and Lamberto. What starts as a simple wine tasting quickly transforms into an extraordinary culinary adventure.
Stefano made our vacation (and even saved it with all his great local tips and referrals)! We truly dined and were pampered by him. He beautifully paired his gorgeous organic wines with equally gorgeous organic food. This private wine pairing over lunch and intimate setting was a real treat for my husband and I. Every mouthful was so good…seemingly simple menu but we know better to think we could ever recreate it the same. Produce was from his own garden too! He shared his knowledge and passion with us about his vineyards and wine making process and his local knowledge and tips were truly helpful to us. August in Italy would never be my first choice but our plans were immovable and Stefano helped us really have a terrific experience with him and in his extended community. We’ll certainly be taking his fine wines and fabulous memories back with us thanks to his fantastic hospitality. Don’t hesitate. Book this experience!

We spent an amazing evening at Etruscaia with superb food, superb wine and outstanding hospitality by Stefano. Absolutely worth the travel. Also, I'd suggest you inquire personally, if you don't find the right experience described on the website. For us, Stefano adjusted to make it fit perfectly with our plans. We had the best day of our stay in Lazio! :)
Alexander R — Google review
A truly fantastic experience! Everything about our visit was superb – the host, the homemade food, and especially the wine were all absolutely incredible. Such a beautiful place with an incredibly kind, knowledgeable, and welcoming host. Stefano knows everything there is to know about wines and how to grow and produce the best wine! Many different wines and something for every occasion! Highly recommend!

Amazing and beautiful experience! Definitely a must do. Stefano’s love for what he does translated in everything he does. He cooked for us which was one of the best meals ever. The way he spoke about the wines and his winery was with such passion and love. I thoroughly enjoyed it there. Thx Stefano

An experience we'll never forget. This place is absolutely wonderful — amazing food, incredible wine, and most of all, a genuine and fantastic human being who guides you through everything with warmth and passion. Before visiting Stefano, we knew nothing about wine. He walked us through the entire process in a way that was both educational and welcoming. From the moment we arrived, we felt completely at ease. He treated us not like customers, but like old friends. The food was outstanding — we were served vegetarian dishes that were hands down the best vegetarian food we’ve ever had. And don’t worry about leaving hungry — Stefano is anything but stingy. The portions were generous, and the flavors unforgettable. Stefano himself is as much a part of the experience as the wine and food. He has a kind, genuine soul and a gift for connecting with people. The wine he served — made by him — was of outstanding quality, and honestly, shockingly affordable for what you get. This is a place where you truly get value for your money — a private guide, a delicious journey through local flavors, and the kind of hospitality you’ll remember forever. Whether you're a tourist (like my girlfriend and I) or a local, do not hesitate to visit Stefano. You won't regret it. Thank you for everything, Stefano!

We discovered Etruscaia by chance on Google Maps, and we couldn’t be happier that we did! Our visit with Stefano, the owner and host, turned out to be one of the most memorable experiences of our trip. Stefano was incredibly welcoming and easy to communicate with via WhatsApp, where we quickly arranged our visit. He prepared a delicious, homemade light lunch paired with exquisite wines. The fresh vegetables from the garden were the star ingredients in every dish—an absolute delight after five days of Italian cuisine without fresh greens. Stefano took his time to give us a detailed tour, explaining organic wine production and sharing insights about the local area. He went above and beyond by providing us with local tips on other places to eat and visit, adding even more value to our to our experience. We highly recommend to visit Etruscaia to anyone visiting the area!

Dear Lamberto and Olga, Your life's journey has created this wonderful place, food, and wine. From the moment we arrived, we knew we wouldn't want to leave. It was evening when we arrived, coming straight from the Rome airport. We were greeted by Lola the dog, whose barks let you know we had arrived. Olga opened the gate and called for Lamberto. We had only planned to stop by for a quick wine tasting, but what we found was so much more than we could have ever imagined. We had a brief but amazing conversation and even helped you load some grape boxes that were being shipped to a client late in the evening. Afterward, Lamberto and Olga invited us into their home to share wine and a meal, without any expectation of payment. We had other plans and a hotel booked, but we ended up staying late into the night, enjoying an incredible meal and superb wine while getting to know two wonderful people. We promised we would return, and we did. Two weeks later, we came back to stay with Lamberto and Olga. Our visit was during the harvest, and we got up early to join in the manual grape picking in the vineyards. We learned so much, and it's truly an experience that is hard to describe in words. The days flew by, and we found ourselves not wanting to leave. But the time came to go home. We said goodbye, reflected on our amazing time together, and of course, bought a lot of wine to take with us. Most importantly, we left with two new friends who helped us reconnect with what's truly meaningful in life. Thank you! We hope to visit again soon. Noya & Asaf

Torrione Matilde Di Canossa, a remarkable medieval tower in Tarquinia, stands as a testament to the town's rich history. (Translated by Google) Tarquinia's medieval walls, almost entirely preserved, still guard the town with their imposing towers. Among these, the circular tower, known as Matilda of Canossa's Tower, deserves a special mention because it hosted the countess in 1080. Restored in the fifteenth century, the tower was flanked by a fortified gate and a walkway connecting it to the castle. Nearby stands the Romanesque church of Santa Maria in Castello, dating back to the early Middle Ages.

Too little info in English. Such precious items from the tombs, and so weirdly organized, with no logic or attention to details. Just looks like the artifacts were just placed there like into some storage. Some unwanted renaissance art exhibitions when people came to see Etruscan history! And the price combined with Necropolis - you cannot pick only one. Some strange ladies are only sitting in the museum rooms, and when you greet them, they are just staring speechless. For 10 euros ladies on the ticket desk can be more nice and at least know numbers in English. Looks like the museum is created for the Italian schoolkids who anyway would rather go to McDonald's instead of that.

(Translated by Google) The church was built between the end of the century. XIII and the beginning of the XIV, it seems following a miracle of St. Francis, near the place where an oratory dedicated to the Trinity stood and was always officiated by the Minor Franciscan friars. A characteristic is the coexistence of Gothic elements (particularly inside) and Romanesque elements (especially in the facade). The division of the facade into three sectors brings the internal one into three naves: in the middle sector, higher than the others, is the main portal, made up of four pointed arches.
