Neues Schloss, also known as the New Castle, is a renowned 18th-century baroque palace located in Meersburg near Lake Constance. It stands next to the medieval Burg Meersburg and overlooks steep vineyards and the picturesque town. The castle features a museum on its third floor and a cafe with stunning views of the lake and Alps from its park terrace. Visitors can enjoy the impressive architecture, history, and sculptures of seagulls throughout the museum.
There are only few rooms on the second floor that can be visited, half of which are in museum format. Overall, quite nice. A must-see place if you're on a tour around Lake Constance. The view of the lake from the terrace and from the second floor is breathtaking!
Eleonora B — Google review
Definitely NOT worth it! Only a few rooms have anything to see, and what can be seen is scarce and unexciting. Additionally, there’s a nasty old lady on the third floor who aggressively asks for your ticket, when there’s no way to enter the property without one! I didn’t see her ask anyone else, so it might be a bit of discrimination on her part because we were speaking in Spanish. This place should be converted into a nice hotel, and that lady should retire to be alone with her bitterness.
Pablo C — Google review
the new seat of prince Bishops in the baroque era of Germany. overlooking the sea and has magnificent features especially the entrance stairs and the mirror hall.
David A — Google review
Being very honest, for the average person you are not missing much if you skip it. But if you have some extra time in your day, it is nice to see the inside!
Ricardo F — Google review
Beautiful building located on the ridge. You can talk to the top with a good pair of legs. Take your time otherwise. It is quite a steep road. No need to purchase tickets in advance. Very nice view from the top out toward Lake Constance
JC L — Google review
It is a great renesonce castle with baroque influence. The location atop of a small hill next to the medival castle overlooking the lake and seeing the whole northern alpes on a clear day make it a hands down recommendation. The restaurant offers top notch quisine for lunch and has a good cake selection for a quick afternoon break. Overall one of the top recommendation if you visit lake constance.
Alexander S — Google review
Beautiful castle and fantastic view across the boden see. The audio guide was also appreciated. Be aware, no English tours currently (although the audio guide could be in English).

Beautifully maintained, great frescos in the ceilings, with access also to the splendid chapel, the Schloss is worth visiting if in the area.

Meersburg Castle, located on the shores of Lake Constance, is a 12th-century marvel that houses a medieval museum with 35 rooms and a charming cafe in a baroque hall. The castle offers breathtaking views of the lake and surrounding vineyards, making it a popular destination for visitors. It's an ideal spot to witness stunning sunsets, especially when taking the ferry back to Konstanz in the late evening.
A wonderful place to visit. See the old. See the new. Beautiful. Sit and have food and drinks while looking out over the sea. (The following review, I found on line. But it sums this castle up so well I decided to use it.. edited.) “Perhaps the most amazing castle in Europe” In Baden-Württemberg, Germany is a beautiful town called Meersburg. It is very quaint, with some lovely streets and shops. My favorite stop in the area was this castle. First built during the 7th century. It doesn't look like much from the outside. But when you cross the drawbridge, the ticket taker is dressed in a medieval costume. From that point forward, you leave the present day world behind... This castle is the most authentic, original castle we've ever visited, and we've seen a LOT of them! The stuff in there is OLD, REALLY OLD!! As one of the only castles never to be taken during a siege, it was never looted. As a result, they just kept everything as it grew and was enhanced. There are no glass display cases, just a few strings and cords to keep you from sitting on the tattered and torn furnishings from an era long gone. The hallways, stairs, walls, tables, etc.. all just cry out to tell their stories of centuries past - of hardship, cold & glory. It really doesn't get more authentic than this!
Ron W — Google review
The castle is really interesting, not too big, with a good atmosphere. There's an audio guide available by a qr code. The views are impressive, and the Bodensee is just magnificent. We were there on Monday, in April. Not too crowded. It's definitely worth visiting if you are interested in historical places.
Алена М — Google review
old medieval castle and the old seat of prince-Bishops. you take the tour and follow the numbers on the wall and you travel in time between multiple stages. you enjoy the sea view and the medieval music. interesting.
David A — Google review
It’s really nice to visit a nice museum with long history back to the 10th century. The route is well designed with nice view in the garden. Recommend!
RM — Google review
Set aside a morning or afternoon to visit as this place is huge. Using your phone you can access verbal information about the different rooms and history of the castle. Fascinating. The gardens are beautiful and there is a Cafe with indoor and outdoor seating thats not to be missed.
Georgia P — Google review
The family thoroughly enjoyed the castle. It is like time traveling back to the medieval times. The boys liked all the weapons. It’s well worth the admission cost.
Chris Y — Google review
Burg Meersburg is considered the oldest inhabited castle in Germany and stands as one of the main attractions on Lake Constance. The fortress offers visitors a glimpse into medieval life with its halls, chambers, and historical exhibits. From its towers and terraces, there are also striking views over the lake and the old town below, making it a rewarding stop for history enthusiasts and travelers alike
MrReview — Google review
Meersburg Old Castle (Altes Schloss) is one of the most authentic and atmospheric castles I’ve ever visited. Perched above the charming town of Meersburg, it offers incredible views over Lake Constance and even the Swiss Alps on clear days. The self-guided tour takes you through 30+ fully furnished rooms — including dungeons, knight’s halls, the old kitchen, armory, and the personal quarters of German poet Annette von Droste-Hülshoff. The experience feels raw and genuine — unlike many overly restored castles. The castle’s narrow staircases, wooden beams, and thick stone walls transport you right back to medieval times. Informational signs and brochures (in several languages) are helpful, and you can take your time exploring. It’s a short but steep walk through Meersburg’s old town to get there, but it’s worth every step. There’s a cozy café and a small gift shop inside. Not ideal for wheelchairs or strollers due to the structure, but manageable for most. Tickets are around €14, and great value considering the experience. You can also get combo tickets for nearby attractions. Highly recommended for history lovers, families, and anyone wanting to explore a real medieval castle with breathtaking lake views! I just visited last month it was an amazing experience the castle.. it's feel Like in walking in a history hollywood film

Vineum Bodensee, situated in Meersburg, is a captivating museum housed within the 400-year-old Heilig-Geist-Spital building. It seamlessly blends historical architecture with contemporary multimedia installations. While predominantly German-focused, it offers an enriching experience for those fluent in the language. The museum provides an insightful journey into the world of wine and is a must-visit for enthusiasts seeking to delve into its rich history and cultural significance.
This was an exceptional and truly enjoyable tour. I could genuinely feel the significant cultural and historical role that wine has played throughout the years. The wines were incredibly unique and absolutely delicious.
닥터MRF — Google review
A must visit in Meersburg. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable and made the experience worth while. You can try different wines at a very reasonable cost and this will be offset if you buy some bottles. We tasted white wines and enjoyed their freshness and vitality. Danke
Iwan J — Google review
The person who explains is really kind and all the wine is delicious. You can also taste wine. She also explains her knowledge about wine well.
딸기라떼 — Google review
I'm waited a little bit more, but for general information it's enough. Also you can see some historical movies, to fill different wines' flavours and try some glasses of wine
Taisia B — Google review
(edited Nov 2024 to be more clear as feedback to the Vineum response) if you don't understand German it is tough, but it is a nice museum. You get a booklet with some translations, HOWEVER there are many interactive exhibits, eg Videos, hanging art, tasting areas etc... that are ONLY in German and you end up missing out on alot. Make sure you also ask the staff more questions, they are efficient in their dealings with the customers. Make sure you save alot of time before 6pm to do the winetasting (cost money 1.5euro per .1l) Closing time is STRICT be wary (We took too long in the museum trying to match the translation to the piece, and missed alot of the tasting also)
Tabeblog — Google review

I love discovering wine from another country. Coming from Canada, I had no set expectations. We were first disappointed to find out there was no tastings because of a festival, but then in the store, this incredible gentleman whom I forgot his name but started with a Ü, gave us a tasting with detailed explanations. Everything we tried was awesome, we bought 3 bottles to enjoy very soon! Thanks for the great memories!
Claudie C — Google review
A very interesting place. It is a pity that there were no excursions at this time. I'd like to see what's inside the plant.
Виктория З — Google review
The place presents itself as the friendliest winery in the entire Germany...I hope it's not true. We were denied wine tasting because we a too big of a group (5 girls) even though just before us a group of 3 people were tasting multiple wines for half an hour.. we were also said that there are too many tourists to give everyone wine to taste (it's not for free by the way) while there was no one waiting behind the doors. So I hope the wine is ok at least.

(Translated by Google) The waterfront promenade in Meersburg – this charming clinker-brick catwalk on Lake Constance, where every café acts as if it's the headquarters for sophisticated gelato discussions. You stroll past old town villas, sip cappuccino, and think, "I'm authentically historic." A historical fact? Small museum that we happened to pass. Really friendly woman on reception who put a documentary on the TV and put it on English. We actually learned a lot from watching it and made the exhibits much more informative. Clearly the exhibits are put together from a local collector. Yes it's small, but the items were well laid in a condensed way. Really enjoyed it.

Meersburg Altstadt, or the Old Town of Meersburg, is a captivating destination that transports visitors back to medieval times. With its charming cobblestone streets and stunning architecture, this picturesque area offers breathtaking views of Lake Constance and the Alps. As you wander through quaint shops and cozy cafes, you'll find delightful spots to relax and soak in the atmosphere.
A beautiful old town that makes you feel like you're in the Middle Ages. The shops there look really great from the outside. The castle itself and the view you have from here over Lake Constance are also great highlights. There are a variety of restaurants and cafés along the shores of Lake Constance. From the jetty there are many opportunities to explore Lake Constance and its places by boat. Tickets can be purchased on site.

Meersburg is hands down my personal favorite town around Lake Constance. It’s full of charm, with traditional German architecture, cobbled streets, and a fairytale-like atmosphere that transports you to another era. The old-world vibe is beautifully preserved, and every corner feels like a postcard. What makes it even more special is its picturesque setting right on the lake. You’ll find plenty of lovely restaurants and cafés offering breathtaking views of the water, perfect for a relaxed lunch or a sunset dinner. Whether you’re into history, photography, or just want to enjoy a peaceful lakeside stroll with great food, Meersburg is a must-visit. A perfect mix of beauty, culture, and lakeside bliss.

Nestled on the northern shores of Lake Constance, Meersburg is a charming town steeped in history and literary significance. It is here that you can find a stunning memorial sculpture dedicated to Annette von Droste-Hülshoff, an influential 19th-century German writer born in Münster. This beautiful bust, likely erected in 1898, serves as a poignant reminder of her legacy.
Built on a steep vineyard, Meersburg is located on the northern shore of Lake Constance. The Merovingians are said to have built a castle here. The city was the residence of the bishops of Konstanz and the writer and poet Annette von Droste-Hülshoff lived here in the years before her death. In addition to a castle and a palace, Meersburg also has a picturesque old town and a beautiful harbor promenade.

Turned up and the place was closed. It was meant to be open, according to their website. Knocked, even called (they hung up). Might be nice, but don't go out of your way to see it. Long ferry journey for nothing.

Well preserved and nicely restored old building with a still working mill wheel and this the exact shadow of a unique castle.

(Translated by Google) A pretty mill with a working paddle wheel. It's not open to the public, but you'll find well-maintained public restrooms there, which may be helpful. (Translated by Google) Superb old mill transformed into a home but which has kept its big wheel in good condition and in working order! It turns but with the small quantity of water present, I think that the action of the wheel must not be natural (electric motor) but that does not take away the charm! Really funny to see this mill stuck like that between the castle and the other house and building!! The tour takes 5 minutes, but it's worth it!
