Hveragerdh's Geothermal Park is a must-visit destination offering an array of geothermal wonders. Visitors can witness the geyser erupting every 5-15 minutes, dip their feet in warm clay mud baths, and even boil an egg in a hole in the ground. The park showcases the town's unique geology with spouting fumaroles and bubbling pools.
I visited here on Oct 30 2024 spontaneously on a drive towards Hofn. This was such a cute, little thermal park. I got to boil an egg in the hot springs, have a taste of bread and sample coffee. It was a nice refresher after a long flight. The owner was there and I was the first visitor of the day, she was so kind and informative. A lovely experience!
Ana C — Google review
I really do recommend and enjoy the sights and the Geyser when it erupts!! Make sure you are not downwind from it. The park is filled with lots of things to see and do like cook your own hard boiled egg and you get to taste the bread made in the heat from the GeoThermal oven and some mud for your feet!
Milly P — Google review
Great value for money and amazing to experience, the woman behind the counter was lovely and you’re able to cook an egg in the geothermal water!! So cool
Eloise H — Google review
You park your cars on in the parking lot and then you walk over to all the different geysers. There is one big guys around the beginning from what we were told is sometimes it goes off pretty regular and sometimes it's quiet but when we went it kept going off. So we got a chance to watch it like three or four times and then there's little bubbly ones in the back that are cute to go look at
Elizabeth S — Google review
Visited the geothermal park recently and had a great experience overall. It was my first time seeing a live geyser, and it was absolutely fascinating to watch! The entry fee was 500 Icelandic krónur, which felt quite reasonable for the experience. Some of the craters didn’t have water, which the staff explained was due to a recent earthquake. While that meant fewer active features than usual, the geothermal activity that was present was still impressive, and the landscape had a unique, otherworldly feel. Definitely worth a stop if you’re nearby—especially if you’ve never seen a geyser in action before!
Priya — Google review
Nice little place to visit and didn't cost much. We were the only visitors there which was a surprise. It had information placards to give you info on area and hot spots.
Kevin G — Google review
Pretty cool park. The geyser here shoots pretty high, and eating an egg cooked from the water is pretty fun. It’s a nice walk around the park which takes around 20 min. Theres also a greenhouse with some cool plants.
Christophe G — Google review
Very nice little park with many geothermal activities and a walking path. We put our feet in the pool and enjoyed a relaxing time. The greenhouse has grapes and bananas growing. We tasted the fresh bread baked on the premises and it was delicious. The lady that runs this was very helpful and friendly.

Shopping mall
Sunnumörk, located in Hveragerdh, is a unique shopping center split between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. The center features the Exhibition Quake 2008, showcasing the impact of the 2008 earthquake on residents and their environment. Visitors can experience an earthquake simulator and witness a fissure created during the quake beneath the shopping center.
Our tour group stopped at this unique shopping center on a bus tour of Iceland's south coast. There's a nice cafe for snacks and hot or cold beverages and clean rest rooms. The main attraction is that there is a glassed-over fissure running through it. The rift belongs to the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, where the continents of America and Europe meet. When the owners learned about this during construction, they decided to make the fissure an attraction. It was a memorable stop on our tour
Barb ( — Google review
Arrived early in the morning, the shops were closed, but you can still enter to see the crack in the ground. The bakery opens at 7 AM, the sandwich is around 1700 ISK
Zoltan K — Google review
Sunnumörk Shopping Center is more than just a shopping spot – we discovered a spot inside where the tectonic plates are visible through the floor, which was really cool and unique! A fun and educational stop while in Hveragerði.
Ivan K — Google review
We made a quick rest stop during our Golden Circle Tour. The bathroom is located to the left of the café and requires a payment of 200 kr for entry. The payment box also accepts Euros and USD.
Lori C — Google review
I guess it depends on what you are expecting. If you need a gr9cery store, it's there. If you need a coffee shop, it's here. There is a very small Icewear shop too. But the display of where the two continents meet is very dark and hard to see. If this is right on your way to somewhere, or if you need something for snack or from Bonus, great. Otherwise, you dont really need to make a detour to come to this place.
Akiko U — Google review
Cool spot where you can see the crack in the ground that separates the North American and European plates of this planet. It's also a nice stopping point for a brief leg stretch if you are driving from Reykjavik to Seljalandsfoss, Skógafoss, or Vik. Has a Bónus which is great because it's a really good store - has everything food-related you might need.. especially roadtrip snacks!

Hveragerði, a charming town and municipality in the south of Iceland, is situated just 45 km east of Reykjavík along Route 1. The town is famous for its greenhouses, flowers, and hot springs, all powered by the geothermal energy that flows from the ground. This unique feature allows for the year-round cultivation of tropical fruits and vegetables.

Hveragerdi - Stone and Mineral Museum is a hidden gem located in a gas station, offering a unique experience for travelers looking to explore something different. The museum boasts an impressive collection of hand-acquired minerals and stones, all personally gathered by Haffi and his family. Visitors can not only purchase one-of-a-kind handcrafted items but also gain valuable insights from the knowledgeable and friendly proprietor.
The geology and fossil collection was very interesting. The shop features hand crafted gifts made of local materials at very reasonable prices. There are beautiful horses outside. I highly recommend visiting.
Jackie J — Google review
Well worth a visit. Make sure to meet Thor a local who collects the minerals and even can recall date and place. Make sure to pick up your dragon glass at various prices Game of Thrones fans.
Andrew P — Google review
A little museum with free entrence; however you can spend hours in there. It's a family collection and they are very friendly. They will tell you all about the beautiful stones and minerals from Iceland.
Frédérique H — Google review
Amazing collection and kind, generous proprietor. We loved this place!!
A T — Google review
Situated in the gas station, this beautiful family collection is worth the stop. I liked the way it was presented. We could also touch some of the minerals. I think it's a beautiful way to honor this family and all the treasures they discovered over their life time.
Anne K — Google review
A must stop for any rock stone or geology lover. Highly recommend stopping in and browsing a multi generation long collection of rare stones. What a neat museum! Keep this place going! Please donate on the way out!
Ryan — Google review
My wife and I are staying for our honeymoon in Reykjavík for 9 days and we were not that pleased with the gift shops offering mostly imported or foreign made items. We decided to take a drive out of the city and happened upon this place by accident. We bought quite a few items, which Haffi and his family handmake themselves and all of the minerals there are personally acquired by them. Not only awesome gifts, but Haffi is a wealth of knowledge, and an incredibly friendly and kind person. So happy we had the pleasure of meeting him. Eric & Ashley Curtiss (The Jewelry Doctor)
Eric C — Google review
Can't recommend this place. It's an arguably nice private collection of stones, but not more. I don't believe in healing stones or crystals, and found the described properties/powers of the stones a bit dubious. Don't go if you expect a proper museum.

Art Museums
LÁ Art Museum is a modern and airy gallery that hosts superb art exhibitions. The staff are accommodating, offering insights into the art and there's a fine cafe serving hot drinks and cakes. The museum offers free admission and features art that is derivative of European modernist and impressionist styles.
Spacious museum with plenty of free parking. It is centrally located in Hveragerði and admission is free. There was an excellent exhibition focusing on artistic impressions by a group of Icelandic artists who had visited Varanasi, India. There is a fine cafe with tables inside and outside. There was a variety of merchandise.
Hope M — Google review
Nice art museum to visit when in town. Free admission. I went as they were about to close so didn’t have much time left, but enjoyed some artwork and the cafe.
Amy K — Google review
Free admission and open until 5pm! I love art galleries. I spent maybe 1.5 hours here looking at everything and watching the full video about My mother’s dream and some of the Skinnings video (it was beautiful shapes animations but then got a bit creepy when it started drawing people-esque things). My favourite part was the My mother’s dream exhibition because it was gorgeous, and the exhibition that was accessible by the second curtain from the room playing the video animation (which I never would have stumbled upon had I not gone behind the first curtain!). I also liked the graphite art with gold and silver metallic accents. There is a gift shop with artworks, books, posters, postcards, and little trinkets and chocolates for sale. There also appeared to be a workshop for kids at the time. There is also a sitting area with tables and chairs for board games. The washroom smelled lovely as well. There was a guest wifi network but password protected and I didn’t ask so can’t comment on the wifi quality. Free parking in front.
Diyyinah J — Google review
This is a really nice museum with well displayed exhibits of mainly young Icelandic artists. Today, I really enjoyed seeing a digital art video 👍😊 and two modern art exhibits. The Museum's café & shop are akso popular with locals and visitors alike ...like myself! 😊 Definitely recommend a visit!
Karitas M — Google review
This is such a quaint museum. It's FREE which matters a lot. The two women who were working there were very helpful, although there English was not very strong. The art is all a bit derivative of European modernist and impressionist, but very pleasant
Andrew H — Google review
The owner is bubbly and full of chat. The exhibits we're pretty out there! But we enjoyed chatting with a local and hearing her stories.
Chris W — Google review
Great museum with a good variation of styles of work (currently - I’m sure they rotate artists). I was surprised to see that we were the only people in there when we went, but it was the afternoon on a Wednesday so that may have been why. There are several large rooms of work as well as a big open room for kids to play/make art. They also serve snacks, which looked delicious. We’re here visiting from the U.S. and this is a must-see stop (especially if you have kids) if you’re an appreciator of art.
Ash C — Google review
Cute modern art museum, totally free, four exhibit rooms showing off new work by Icelandic artists. Good stop on your way to the nearby geothermal park (though that is temporarily closed). There's a bright and modern cafe inside as well, which served espresso and coffee drinks. (A lot of cafes seem closed for covid still in May of 2021, so we were happy to find espresso drinks!)

The Geothermal Park Hveragerði, also known as Hveragarðurinn, is located in an active geothermal region where visitors can witness bubbling hot springs and geysers right in the center of town. The park offers a glimpse into the town's geothermal history and features attractions such as a small banana greenhouse and hot pools where visitors can boil eggs. Guests can also sample locally baked bread cooked in the ground and enjoy soaking their feet in bubbly springs.
Lovely staff and delicious bread, and the egg was both fun to cook and eat. The Geisir was cool and sane goes for the rest of the self-guided tour. Interesting history. Felt both educational and fun. Like an introduction to thermal stuff. I regret not taking a footbath while we were 5 other than that I'd say good value for time and money.
S — Google review
The two gentleman running the admissions and restaurant were so kind and informative. Our kids loved cooking the eggs in the geothermal vent, and the geyser went off every 20 minutes :) it was also fun to see everything they had growing in the attached green house like tomatoes and a banana tree! Extremely affordable fun for us all before we left out for the airport.
Kathryn H — Google review
My 12yo kids had a fab time cooking eggs and purposefully getting soaked under the geyser. Amazed at the garbage the hot spring threw out; and liked the lovely smells of oregano, parsley, lemon balm, Thai basil and sweet basil in the greenhouse too. Thank you to the friendly and helpful staff!
Ada S — Google review
Amazing hike, we did it once halfway then the next day until the thermal river which is another amazing experience. We believe the sign is wrong though, it says 3km but it was an hour hike there and an hour back (and I walk quite fast). Parking is through a parking machine and there is a small coffee place with toilet.
Farkas R — Google review
Very cool attraction. We happened to be camping a few blocks away and walked over in the morning before we left. A nice surprise to see an active geyser and try Icelandic rye bread! They even have the recipe posted so you can try to make it at home.
Caroline I — Google review
Great place to see the geothermal power in action, park is reasonably priced for what I have experienced in Iceland. Staff was very friendly and informative. Place also has a nice coffee shop.
Dawid S — Google review
Cute, easily accessible geiser and hot springs close to Reykjavik. Really appreciate this as an accessible option, learned more than I expected about geothermal cooking. The attached greenhouse is powered by the geothermal heat, which is pretty cool. Highly recommend.
Breena T — Google review
Beautiful park with active geiser which erupts about every 20 minutes. Local geothermically baked bread and egg included. Buy a coffee and you get free refill. Friendly staff.

Park
Hveragerði Public Park is a hidden gem in the town, with a rich artistic and literary history showcased through an outdoor exhibit featuring poets, writers, painters, and sculptors. The park's scenic riverside vegetation bears the unique marks of nearby hot springs, while Reykyafoss waterfall adds to its natural charm. Although it may not compare to larger attractions like Geysir and Gullfoss, it offers a peaceful rest stop with beautiful surroundings.
Nice waterfall hidden away in a small town park. Visit here early in the morning so had the place to ourselves. Really magical place to visit and enjoy. Would recommend a stop if you get a chance.
Ian — Google review
Is a beautiful park to walk around a river have a small but pretty waterfall in summer you can wet your feet, is surrounded for ancestral and big trees and all the way are signals with the history of the first families that lived in Hveragerði. Very nice place to walk and enjoy the nature.
Lorena R — Google review
Really cozy and nice place
Jean G — Google review
Was impressed by the scenery as this was our first stop on the golden circle. The riverside's vegetation had been singed by springs which was interesting. The waterfall was pretty different too. In the distance you could see thermal processing. However it gets much better than this at the Geysir and Gullfoss so I wouldn't stop for long. Accessing the waterfall in a wheelchair whilst it had snowed was impossible, we got about half way until we could see it however even this was very hard work. I walked further to take more pictures. Be careful walking along the bank in the snow, there appear to be deep holes that are easy to fall into.
Jonathan K — Google review
Nice place to have a wander. A heated outdoor pool and tub in the area with gym etc also

Reykjafoss Waterfall is a charming and picturesque waterfall located near the Varma hot spring river. It was once the site of a wool factory that used its power to generate electricity. The ruins of the factory now provide a beautiful backdrop for photography. Visitors can easily access the falls and enjoy walking paths along the valley, making it perfect for picnics and family outings. The waterfall itself is not particularly large but offers a raw and powerful display, especially when water levels are high.
Not a spectacular waterfall, but very pretty in a lovely garden setting. And no crowds! Good place for a picnic. We saw salmon (?) jumping the waterfall!

Nice little walk out to a beautiful little waterfall. Nice signage about the falls and history. We parked up the road near the pool and walked down the road beside some school children who were exercising. The path was easy and wide
Rebecca F — Google review
Pretty little waterfall that you can see in town! It’s flowing pretty hard and you can get super close to the waterfall as well. You can view it from up top or on the ground.
Shalon J — Google review
Beautiful park setting where you can watch the fish 🐟 jump up the waterfall migrating upstream. Just beautiful!
Angie S — Google review
Due to jet lag, I did a pre-dawn walk around Hveragerdi and accidentally stumbled onto the Reykjafoss Waterfalls. This very pretty little set of falls was easily accessible and had walking paths (or a sort) running up and down the valley. There are parks nearby for picnicking and relatively gentle waters. Well worth a visit in you are staying in town.
