Natural History Museums
The Museum @ Black Hills Institute is a must-visit destination for dinosaur enthusiasts and anyone interested in prehistoric creatures. It houses an impressive collection of real fossils, including the second largest and second most complete T. Rex skeleton ever found, known as STAN. Visitors can explore unfussy exhibit spaces featuring dinosaur skeletons, minerals, and meteorites while also enjoying a gift shop with fossils and rocks for sale.
A packed collection of fossils and high-quality reproductions along with abundant rock and mineral samples. The history of this institution makes it all the more attractive, especially its discoveries of Sue and Stan, the most complete T-Rex fossils to date, both found in the state of South Dakota. Also, very low cost to enter, which is much appreciated. I loved it!

For 7.50, I thought this museum was hands down worth it. I am not sure what lured me to go here, but I went on my own to visit. I was amazed at how many dinosaur, mammal, and aquatic animal bones they fit into one room for display. Not only that, but they had displays of rocks as well. There were big animals too- a t.rex, mammoth, and some very big sea creatures. This place is great for kids. You can spend anywhere from five minutes to hours here looking and observing the artifacts. Many of the bones are local but several were also from Madagascar. Very cool place, and worth spending seven to eight dollars. There is a gift store attached. The people working here seemed nice, especially the young lady at the desk. Always great to see young respectful teenagers working.
Adam P — Google review
This is the perfect place for anyone who has an interest in geology or fossils. The museum is not big, but it packs a lot into that space. We were there for over an hour the first time we visited South Dakota, and our kids insisted on returning when we came back two years later.
Aaron R — Google review
We LOVED this place!! It was a last minute addition to our family vacation, and I'm SO GLAD we went. I am amazed at how many fossils and artifacts they were able to fit into a relatively small space. About half the space is the museum, and the other half is the gift shop with an incredible variety of options. My kids got a megalodon tooth and vials of gold, copper and silver. I got an amazing granite sculpture as a memento of our vacation. There was a snafu that resulted in us leaving without the sculpture, but when I called they had it set aside and ready to send to us. Amazing service with some totally unique exhibits. A must see, as far as I'm concerned.
Ruth E — Google review
Absolutely fantastic museum! My girlfriend and I had no idea this place even existed until we happened to drive by during the rally. We decided to stop and check it out and we’re so glad we did. At just $7.50 per adult, it was more than worth the price. Honestly, we both felt they could easily charge $10–15 and it would still be well worth it. We spent about an hour exploring the exhibits, which are packed with fossils, gemstones, and prehistoric displays. They even have a few touch exhibits, which made the experience even more fun and interactive. If you’re into dinosaurs or natural history, you’ll really enjoy this place. My only (small) complaint is that I wish the building were a bit larger so the exhibits could be spread out more. Still really cool how they packed it all in. Almost looks like everything is interacting with each other. Overall, a great experience. Definitely recommend stopping by!
Jason D — Google review
Small but intense. All things dinosaurs! Able to touch sime artifacts. Museum is getting bigger and going to a bigger building soon.
S S — Google review
Neat little museum near Rapid City. Tons of fossils and artifacts with a broad time range. My family and I enjoyed looking around and reading about the various displays on our trip, I would highly recommend adding it to your itinerary if you're planning a trip out to the black hills, especially if you love natural history.
Hannah R — Google review
It's a small museum but it's packed with lots of great bones and fossils. You can spend an hour or two here.

Great place to spend about 30-60 minutes. Cool model railroad

This is,a rather small museum, but great people working there. Tomorrow taking a round trip train ride from Hill City to Keystone
Vicki Z — Google review
Having been riding the train almost every time we go to the black hills, this was our first time going into the museum. Cute little stop and my son loves being able to walk through the caboose!
Tina M — Google review
This little place packs a punch into a really teeny footprint. For those who love model trains, you'll love the setup at the back. Make sure and ask the conductor how many days injury free they are.
Tana R — Google review
Friendly museum with a caboose you can enter, a large model train set up and numerous artifacts. There is some interesting railroad info, not a lot, though.
Richard S — Google review
Loved this museum, there was a lot of history in this small building that shows everything from the early years of the railroad through to the modern time and opening of the 1880 train. Well worth the visit

Step back in time and experience the charm of the 1880 Train - Hill City Depot, a vintage steam locomotive that has been delighting visitors with its scenic 20-mile roundtrip journey through the Black Hills since 1957. Departing from Hill City, this narrated two-hour tour takes passengers to Keystone and back, offering breathtaking views of Black Elk Peak and historic mining encampments.
Our group of 17 people did this as a family! It was fun and enjoyable for everyone. The views were beautiful! My only complaint. If you riding from hill city to keystone and only doing the 15 min break is that the restrooms are far down from the train. So you have to hustle to make it back. I suggest staying the few hours in keystone, eating and shopping then taking the train back! And same if you get on in keystone to hill city. Stay and shop and EAT!
Jessica H — Google review
I gave this a 3 because the staff is AMAZING. And they do have someone coming by to offer a snack and drinks. I love the fact that you can flip the seats to face one another or whatever direction you want to face. I was very disappointed in the scenery. No fault of the staff or location but we've been on the Georgetown Loop train in Colorado and that scenery was AMAZING. If you've never ridden a train then you'll probably enjoy the 1880 Train ride but if you've been on the Georgetown Loop train, don't waste your money. You'll be disappointed. You really only see deer, a lot of trees, residential houses and rocks.
Melissa S — Google review
Take the train!! It was a great experience. I was on the fence about going but this was a once in a lifetime experience. I took the train from Keystone, did the Stop Over in Hill City and then rode the train back to Keystone. I took a train behind the engine with windows out and an open middle car on the way back to get the experience of both. Wonderful. I would agree with others that sitting on the opposite side of the train for you ride way back is the way to go to see all the sights.
Cindy P — Google review
This is really a moment of history. Went from Hill City to Keystone. 1880 steam engine train ride. 10 miles took an hour to get to our destination, old mining communities were highlighted. Huge granite outcroppings nearly a foot away from the train tracks. The train stations on either end offer nice train memorabilia. And all the employees are friendly, knowledgeable and can answer most of your questions.
Vicki Z — Google review
We took the Saturday afternoon Wine Express on the 1880s Train. This was such a cool and unique experience, combining a wine tasting, great food, and a slow, relaxing train ride. The Train staff ask that you check in at least 30 minutes prior to departure. They have a large covered sitting area to wait in, with music, food and drinks for purchase, and clean restrooms. You can also watch the steam engine connect and fill with water prior to boarding. The train itself was comfortable with padded bench seats. As the train moves at about 10 miles per hour, the open windows provided plenty of fresh air. The train staff were friendly and engaging with an obvious focus on making the trip enjoyable. The Wine Tour train leaves Hill City and travels one hour to Keystone. The stop in Keystone is long enough for restroom breaks and for a quick leg stretch. The return trip is enlivened with folk music (and at least with our car, a good natured sing-along). The tour included 5 Wine tastings paired with an appetizer, small entrée salad, and desert. The wines and the foods were all great quality. We appreciated that the train staff will also exchange any wine tasting for a non-alcoholic beverage. They also provided bottled water on the return journey.
Dawn J — Google review
The 1880 Train was a huge hit with our kids—they loved it. The views from the train are fantastic, you can see the Black Hills and the conductors were friendly and did a great job of explaining the details of the ride and the history. It was a perfect, low-stress activity that everyone in our family enjoyed.
Aswinganga — Google review
Great experience for the whole family! Beautiful views. The train moves slow, 10-15 mph. We choose the enclosed car with the padded seats and the windows can open. Otherwise the open air car has wooden seats. The workers were very friendly and served drinks and snacks on the train. The kids love it.
Kristi H — Google review
Very friendly folks who run the train who are clearly very passionate about the work that they do to keep this historic railroad alive. The round trip ride was just over two hours and included facts about the train and the surrounding areas. Everything seemed clean and well maintained, I would definitely recommend giving them a visit if you are in the area.

This place is awesome!!! I hate wine and these ladies managed to find 5 wines I liked. We will be returning here every year. This is the best wine store hands down I have ever been in!

This is Closed for good. We went 3 years ago and loved it. Went this weekend looking forward to the wine tasting/buying options and to get olive oil only to fine while the webpage and facebook pages are up - it was gone. Emailed to see if seasonal, moved locations, or gone for good. Reply was no longer in business. Sad as was great when we went and was looking forward to it.
Kristin W — Google review
We did both the free wine tasting and the beer tasting here - both were great experiences. The lady serving us wine picked some great ones based on our taste, and another lady who did the beer tasting was very friendly and did a great job while not being too overbearing since we were the only ones there. We also liked their olive oil, and got some to take with us! Definitely would recommend making a stop if you are in Hill City
Amanda W — Google review
A most enjoyable stop on our walk in Hill City. An knowledgeable & attentive team that highlighted South Dakota wines for us to taste, but many other wines are available too. The meat and cheese tray was a nice surprise too! We became repeat customers during our visit in the Black Hills - thank you for the hospitality!
Chris B — Google review
The wine tasting here was fun and informative, and very friendly staff! A good selection, and the woman who helped us really knew her wines. We recommend this place over Prairie Berry, she was much more personable and friendly than the staff there.
Janelle J — Google review
We stopped in on 6/21/16 to check the selection. Not only was there an excellent selection of wine and beer, but the Hostess rushed to set up chairs for the 4 of us while we sampled those products. A warm and friendly atmosphere. (When we arrived back home I found that I needed a copy of the billing receipt with my signature. I contacted them and received the copy in just a couple of days) Thank You!

Great selection. Perfect afternoon of sunshine, wine tasting and people watching. Cheese plate was moderate in size. Any wine purchase with a buffalo and free wine glass, nice addition

This place is magical. Featuring many artist's work, Randy at Warrior's Work has many of his own frames on display as well as his workshop where he does all of his work. I felt at home as soon as I walked in the door to this place thanks to Randy and his wife Janna. If you are in the Hill City area and have an interest in art I highly recommend going to see this place, you won't be disappointed.
Jacob S — Google review
Would grade them a zero star if I could. Beautiful art, extremely beautiful. It's unfortunate for the artists because I could see where due to the gallery employees being unprofessional, which are there to sell the art, despite what you might look at or your beliefs. Yes I did like the two coat trees with the owl and crow. I did very much like them but they were expensive. My price range for an art piece was one of the bronze table top sculptures. Nevertheless a simple hello hi how are you would have sufficed and guaranteed the purchase.
Angelina J — Google review
Would’ve given 5 stars but I’m just a little disappointed that ‘Ghost of the Plains Buffalo’ print I bought for $125 is everywhere. I thought it seemed familiar. Love the photo (print) and the service but I see it on Amazon, Walmart and online elsewhere for $35. I thought it might have been somewhat limited but alas- I was wrong. Still like it.

No photos of this place because photography isn't allowed, but the facility is beautiful and clean, and the gentleman working the counter seemed very knowledgeable. Great selection of fine art. Lots of Sarah Rodgers!

His pieces are intricately detailed and showcase a wide range of places and subjects that have caught his artistic eye. The gallery also features the work of Lori Nonnast, who is known for her professionalism and friendly demeanor. One notable piece by Jon Crane called 'Spring Time in the Heartland' was gifted to Mel Killian, who had it expertly framed by Lori.
One of my favorite stops in South Dakota. Extremely welcoming environment that feature passionate artists and creative works. Can’t wait to visit again this Fall on our yearly SD trip!

Early July my wife and I visited the gallery. She has been searching for just the right print of a Buffalo. It’s here she found it. It is magnificent. Lori Nonnast from the time we met her to the time my wife’s prints arrived has been the most professional, caring person I have met. She made sure the prints were packed securely and carefully. And the shipping was reasonable. I have been telling everyone I know about her and the Jon Crane Gallery. We are definitely going back.

Customers have expressed their satisfaction with the store's attentive and caring attitude, particularly in resolving issues promptly. I loved this little shop. After purchasing my purse, I had some issues after I got home to Nebraska. They sent me another beautiful purse. Rebecca, the owner, stands by her purses. She’s an outstanding person with an absolutely adorable shop.

The customer service is exceptional! I emailed the store in regards to an issue with a bag I had purchased in August 2020 and Kendra went above and beyond my expectations to resolve the issue. And, extremely quick I must say! They have a very nice selection of high quality products and I will definitely be purchasing from them in the future.

This is the greatest company for customer service and quality products that I have ever had the pleasure of dealing with. The USPS lost the item I had purchased for my daughter for Christmas and the customer service rep at The Handbag Store expedited another one to me to make sure I had it on time. She also sent a return label for the lost item in case it arrived (which it did a week and a half after Christmas). There are so few business owners out there with this kind of caring attitude and integrity. Bravo!!!
Donna S — Google review
I really love this store! When out in the Black Hills for our yearly camping trip, we always stop here! I love their selection, variety and quality of products. Each handbag or wallet I’ve gotten has always been a favorite and I use them much more than anything I’ve ever gotten elsewhere. PLUS... I love shopping local!

I love my Unicorn purse, but one issue was I can’t get a copy of my receipt that I paid for this purse. Restaurant
Desperados is a former saloon dating back to 1885, offering hearty American cuisine and local craft brews. The historic building adds to the charm of the place. Guests have praised the delicious bison burgers and other dishes like walleye, with a fair warning about bones in the fish. The portions are generous, and some diners found the prices reasonable. Despite some wait times due to short staffing, visitors appreciated the attentive service and well-prepared steaks.
One of the nicest waitress (can't remember her name. Medium length, straight black hair with bangs)!!! We've ate at a couple places in town and this is definitely a winner! Prices aren't very high, and the food was delicious! * Those eating with our party likes the salad dressing, I loved the pasta, bit the chicken fried steak I guess was not the best, but okay* Definitely go again! It's also a historic building in the area (see pic)!!
Glen M — Google review
We had a meal here in late September: it was mid-week, about 2pm. The restaurant was not crowded and we were seated and served quickly. Prices were what I found to be typical in the Black Hills-- over $10 for a burger and a side (like fries). I had the burger that was served with gravy and mashed potatoes. Based on previous experience with similar sandwiches I expected the burger to be served open-faced, but it was served with both pieces of the bun intact-- no problem, as who can complain about extra bread and gravy. The burger was cooked properly and was tasty, and the potatoes were 'real' mashed potatoes, not made with some powdered potatoes from a box. The beef gravy was dark and flavorful. My wife had a sliced meat sandwich ( I believe it may have been pastrami) and fries. It was cooked properly, and the fries were tender and well seasoned. The interio decor is nice: mainly modern furnishings with a Western theme; a few items such as a rifle, steer skull, and a horse saddle join the expected Western artwork, but the rifle/bayonet combo looks more like something from WWI than the 'Cowboys and Indians' era). After reading on the outside of the building that it was a historic building and the oldest operating saloon in the area, I was just a little disappointed to see how modern the interior was-- it was later that I saw a section of exposed log construction and read that the building was originally made of logs. Most of the interior and exterior give no sign of this, and I'm sure it has been remodeled numerous times since the 1800s. We enjoyed our meal and would go back if we were in the area again.
River R — Google review
We waited about 35 minutes to be seated. They were, like so many other businesses, so short staffed. They did a wonderful job and the steak I had was one of the best I have ever had. The side veggies were cooked fresh, not from a can or frozen. I would be happy to visit again. Loved it!!
Sheila O — Google review
Good food is hard to find in small touristy towns like these, so we were pleasantly surprised when visiting Desperados for lunch. The hot open faced beef sandwich was delicious! The historic building is also very interesting.
Clarissa D — Google review
This place was really nice. The food was delicious. The pulled pork sandwich was amazing. One of the best pulled pork sandwich I have eaten. I would've given 5 stars but we had to keep telling our server to refill our drinks. Other than that the decor and atmosphere is fantastic. Definitely a must to try.

Had dinner here the country fried steak was good. My husband enjoyed his sirloin steak it was cooked perfectly medium rare. Great service she came back several times to ask if we needed anything else. The prices were reasonable for what we had

The walleye was delicious..just fair warning there are bones. The green beans and sweet tater fries were amazing, too! Our waitress was brand new and did a fantastic job. Definitely stop in for a great atmosphere and delicious food. ** the portions are large..my portion shows what I shared with my mama.

Restaurant
Hill City Café is a popular all-day dining spot known for its relaxed, rustic ambiance and comfort food. The café offers a salad bar, daily specials, and a great combo platter. It's a local favorite with attentive service and a full bar. The breakfast buffet features classic options like biscuits and gravy, sausage, bacon, omelettes, pancakes, French toast, and fresh fruit.
A really great halopeno hamburger and fries, also Mushroom and cheese burger. There were only two servers one was also the bartender. Our server was the bartender. She was efficient and prompt in refilling my much needed coffee. Only a few people dining, but it is off season here and the food deserves alot of customers.
Vicki Z — Google review
The restaurant is a quaint local place with a good atmosphere and local color. The menu is a bit limited with hamburgers and chicken sandwiches being the highlight. There is an all-you-can-eat rib special that is pretty good! Today I had the hot hamburger, which is a hamburger patty on white bread covered in gravy. The gravy was tasty. It comes with mashed potatoes, but I asked for French fries instead. My meal came with mashed potatoes, and the waitress said my fries would be right out. I was a bit confused, but started to eat anyway. The mashed potatoes would have been acceptable if they were hot, but they were lukewarm at best. The French fries never came, and when the waitress came back to ask if we needed a drink refill, I told her to cancel them as I was done with my sandwich. I wouldn't recommend this place, as there are much better eateries in town.

We used to like this place, but it's gone so far downhill. Most tables were empty but still with dirty plates. Waiter was at one slow speed. Floors were sticky and so gross. All four of us were so disappointed. Patty melt sandwich was served and the top bread was in pieces of clumps, like it fell apart and they put it back on the meat to serve it. The lemonade was watered down, no taste. A lady working there had no interest in helping customers, stood and chit chatted at one table for well over 15 minutes. we watched two tables of people walked out after being seated with menus but nothing else. We were seated but not given menus so we had to go find them for ourselves. Only thing positive we all could say was the bacon on our burger was great! Otherwise, skip this gross, unclean restaurant.

What an amazing experience, good hospitality. Food was delicious. My daughter left her headphones inside the cafe and where found and returned by our waitress, she was so nice . Thank you so much Hill city cafe for the good service and Amazing experience ! 😃
Jose L — Google review
when we walked in all that was said was pick a side. When we sat down the only other 1 table in there that had someone seemed to be getting a lot of attention. after about 15 minuets of sitting we was finally asked for drinks. there was a sewer smell coming from I'm assuming the bathroom. The bar didn't have a lot for salad stuff but more the pasta salad type stuff. the waitress said I can choose the chili off the menu and then pick a sandwich, I did not knowing that that comes with that so we can say she tricked me. The price of the food for 4 people was super high. We paid $120 for 4 people not including the tip and that's for 2 bowls of spaghetti, a burger and a ham and cheese sandwich. The burger was so red inside, my husband didn't want to send it back because he said it was burnt on the outside enought.. My sandwich come with no meat on it and I had to send it back.. The food was probably a 6 out of 10 but The way my mouth dropped when she handed us that check. We literally ate at a steak house with huge steaks, salads, bison meat and everything the day before an only spent $100 and we had to take food home. We just got in this state today, maybe that is how it is here but we're I am from, non of this would be acceptable.
Ashley L — Google review
Food was really good. Service could be better, our waitress was slow which resulted in us sitting with empty drinks. Hard to blame her though, she was the only one working serving the bar and the tables. It was supper time and not fair for her management to expect her to cover it all without help. That all said, this could’ve been a one off, if I’m ever in the area again I would return. Small restaurant, which I like and felt like a small town family setting.

It's a place where you can experience the Western vibe. One visitor was drawn to Chute Rooster due to its proximity to their hotel and found the staff incredibly friendly.
Best dinner on the road to Montana! We had no idea what we were getting into amd loved every bit. Be sure to stop by if you happen to be visiting the big 4.

We grabbed take out. Great wings. If I had to be picky I’d said they could be a tiny bit more crispy. Otherwise great wing and sauce. Salad was good too. Chicken on the salad was SPICY!

This is everything you need in a warming, charming, and relaxing cowboy-style destination. The food is outstanding, the music creates a fantastic vibe, and the top-notch service offers a level of quality that feels far beyond its price. It's a genuine experience you won't soon forget.
Marco P — Google review
Very cool restaurant with live music and friendly staff. I had the pulled pork sandwich and regretted it. The fried potato chips were also bland, and tasted a bit oil burnt from the fryer. I should have got the Bison burger, which was good. I would give it another chance because of the very cool atmosphere, but I'd try something else and not pulled pork.

Absolutely fantastic experience! The staff went above and beyond to make us feel welcome—friendly, attentive, and genuinely kind. And the food? Even better! Every bite was delicious and clearly made with care. I’ll be making a special trip back just for this restaurant—and for the amazing people who make it so memorable. Highly recommend!

Menu was reason fair. We spent about 20 a piece with one drink with dinner. They play bluegrass music!! We arrived a bit late, but they fed us anyway; thank you.

The Chute burger is big and juicy. The fries were crispy and hot out of the fryer. We also had the pulled pork sandwich which was good too. Live music in the bar area and plenty of seats in the dining room. Nice outdoor patio but we ate inside.
Billy S — Google review
Slow service. 5 people in my party 2 adults, 1 older teen and 2 middle aged kids. Took a solid 5 minutes to take our drink order, then another 10 minutes to bring those out and take our food order. The 2 kids meals came out super fast. They were done with those and were sitting around waiting for the rest to come out.which took close to 30 minutes. They put a brand on their sandwiches and burgers. The pulled pork sandwich was burnt with the brand that the burn in that part was not edible. Waited another 10 minutes to get the check after plates were cleared which didn’t come so I just went and found the waitress to pay. She seemed very annoyed with this. While her and the other waitress were taking shots. Might be a good place for people not with kids who have time to hang out and drink. But with inpatient kids not a good option. Place was also super hot. Was pouring sweat and it was only in the low 70’s and was around 8pm.

1885 Steakhouse & Saloon is a new addition to the dining scene in Black Hills, offering top-quality steaks with an emphasis on freshness. The restaurant is owned by individuals who also have a beautiful vacation home within walking distance of the establishment. Formerly known for its lack of authenticity and poor conditions, the restaurant has undergone significant improvements and now prides itself on cleanliness and modern amenities.
The 1885 was a wonderful and surprising find. We stopped in with no expectations and left with one of the best meals in South Dakota. The cocktails are top shelf. The food, exquisite. Service, outstanding. Atmosphere, vintage. Get the ribs, you won’t regret it. We had chicken which was fantastic and ribs, corn, potato salad, old fashioned cocktails. If you’re traveling through the black hills make this the first place you eat and everywhere else will pale by comparison.

The service was great, it smells of fresh wood which I loved, was conveniently located. It's a super easy walk to shopping and the train depot from here. However the food was just okay and I thought overpriced for what we got. The macaroni and cheese was delicious but I had a tummy ache shortly after. Bonus is they have decent sweet ice tea, I drank 3 glasses! This southern girl is always on the hunt for some good tea. I'd give them another chance and just order something different. Id love to check out their dinner sometime as this visit was for lunch.

We came in during a visit to Hill City and had a great time. We were given some inaccurate information unfortunately by a third party that arranged our visit and reservation, however the owners were beyond fantastic and handled above anything I would have expected and were a pleasure. We were glad we didn’t let it damper the night because the food was all delicious. We started with steak tips and also tried a steak as well as a burger. Everything was cooked exactly as ordered and the food quality was great. The Mac and cheese was a great surprise as a side and well made. We didn’t have room for dessert but will come hungry next time we are in town. We would absolutely recommend coming in when you’re in the area. Thank you Scott for handling the awkward situation so well with us and going above and beyond anything you needed to do to make the visit memorable. Stop in for a great meal!

While we had a little bit of a wait (due to rally season), it was worth it. We did tapas with drinks and had the delicious steak bites, shrimp with the boom sauce (very good and straight for ease of eating), and bread with the rasberry butter. Very enjoyable and neat to find out about this old saloon!

Food was delicious, we had Walleye and Ny Strip with green beans, which were both cooked perfectly and the green beans were amazing. service was great. Wish we had room for dessert, maybe next time. Would definitely recommend this to anyone passing through Hill City, or even staying in town. It’s really a great place to have dinner. We did make reservations as it’s the week of Sturgis and didn’t know if it would be too busy.

We stopped by 1885 after riding all day. There was a short wait and we waited in the bar area with some ice cold beer. We were seated a short time later. The waitress was very pleasant and attentive. We started with the deep feied guacamole and jalapeño ranch dipping sauce, incredible! Me and my wife shared a full rack of ribs, loaded baked potato and coleslaw. The food was really good. The only complaint/recommendation that I have is that the ribs need the membrane removed from the backside. Other than this, we had a great experience and enjoyed the food/restaurant. I would recommend it!

My wife and I rented 2 Sol paddleboards from Black Hills Paddlesports and had an amazing all around experience. First, the process to book the paddleboards was effortless and straight forward from the website. We planned to rent on a Saturday, but the forecast showed bad weather. I was able to contact the staff by phone and shift my reservation to the day after. When we arrived in Hill City, the paddleboards were ready. The staff had the forethought to equip me with a wider more steady board due to my beginner status. The staff thoroughly showed us how to use the manual and electrical pumps to inflate our boards and everything was packed in very clean and precise case. My wife and I decided to go to Deerfield lake because we wanted a bigger no-wake lake to explore. Setup went easy and we were on the water in good time. Tear down was just as quick. The paddleboards easily deflated and fit back into their cases with much ease! Dropping the boards back off at Black Hills Paddlesports was easy. The staff asked how it went and we raved about our experience. Service: 5 Stars Equipment condition: 5 Stars Setup/tear down: 5 Stars Overall experience: 5 Stars Thanks Black Hills Paddlesports for an amazing day!!

Renee the owner and her staff are FANTASTIC! We rented 4 paddle boards and they were ready upon our arrival. They were clean and in great condition. The complimentary tasting of five wines provides an opportunity to savor their unique flavors. Although the kitchen was closed during our visit, they do offer gluten-free food options and a variety of grab-and-go eats in their shop.
Wow! What a treat this place is! It's definitely more than a winery as their food options were fresh and made for a perfect lunch spot after checking out Mount Rushmore! The history of this place is amazing as they offer award winning wines that you have to taste to understand. The Rosy Ass Rhubarb is incredible and so unique. Plus, you get to say ass in an appropriate way out loud when you order. The seasonal Pumpkin Bog was delicious, and they served it hot, which was a nice treat. The 5 sample tasting is free, but it makes it hard to choose which full glass to purchase because there is a flavor for every pallette. Loved it here!

Visited here a few years ago while in town for a race. We stopped after the race to rehydrate and absolutely fell in love with this location. We viewed to swing by every time we were in state. The wives were very good and the vibe extremely fun and chill. Sad to hear they closed down. I loved their rhubarb wines, but the best treat was their jalapeno rhubarb jam. Maybe if they are feeling generous they would be willing to share their recipe?

Great experience from the start, met at entrance and explained what they do. Wine tasting was fun. Ordered a prime rib sandwich and salad , which was excellent. Sat out on patio with our dog and enjoyed our food and a glass of wine. Great place to go.

This is a very nice, laid back place. You can do a FREE, 5 CHOICE TASTING!! They don't push or hard sell you- the wines will do the work. There's plenty of parking outside, a long with a spacious outdoor seating area. You can order a charcuterie board, or get wine and some of the cheeses they have for sale. They also make bagels, sandwiches, and soup. It's very spacious inside, with two complete tasting counters. They have alot of merchandise for sale as well... It's clean, well lit, well run. What more need I say?? Wines start at 14/bottle, and go up from there. The tasting paper shows that the more stars there are, the sweeter the wine. We prefer sweet wines, and their chart made choosing quite easy. There's a general store to the right, and MINER BREWERY to the left. They got just about all the bases covered! It was a great stop for us!! 👍👍👍

My husband and I stopped here for a wine tasting and some lunch. Super friendly staff! The charcuterie board was delicious and we enjoyed almost every wine that we tried. We ended up buying a whole case to take home. We were not expecting much from our stop here but it ended up being one of our favorite parts of our Black Hills trip. There is another winery down the street that we also tried but did not have a good experience at. Highly recommend stopping here if you are vacationing in the area!

I love this place! I did my first wine tasting here, and it was really fun! The associate that served us the wine was really knowledgeable and friendly. They also have a hot mulled wine that was delicious. The food is wonderful, too, can't go wrong with any of the sandwiches. It's very pleasant to hang out here, very nice atmosphere. The prices match the quality; I will mostly only visit on special occasions due to that. Highly recommend for a great experience! 👍👍

We didn’t plan to visit any winery while we were traveling there a few days ago. But the Prairie Berry Winery was on our way to the Crazy Horse memorial. So we decided to give it a try and to see if we could eat there too. Good thing we tasted complementary 5 wines by our choices, but couldn’t eat there as the kitchen was closed on that day. A lady (I’m not good at names :/) did the tasting and talked about the story behind the family winery as we were eager to know. She was kinda sarcastic and fun if I can say that. We wished she explained more about the wines as she did with some other guests. Since we were road tripping from a different state, we decided to purchase some South Dakota wines and cheeses. There were an old farmer couple who were doing their cheese tasting at the winery. I enjoyed talking with them and bought some local farm cheeses too. Overall, the whole experience was not bad. I would recommend to stop by the winery.

This place is naughti, but in the best way possible! It's my new go-to spot in South Dakota. I tried the wine flight and absolutely loved every single one. Kayla was incredibly knowledgeable, friendly, and energetic. The decor perfectly captures the local vibe and the space can easily accommodate large groups. With a fantastic selection of brews, wines, and food, this place has it all.
Robyn H — Google review
Sick & Twisted Brewery, within, Naughti Wines was fun. Dog friendly outside. We had their sandwiches and local beers with our two dogs. Friendly staff. The sandwiches, Guido & Norma Jean hit the spot. (Dog photo not staged, just a goof).
Scott N — Google review
Nicole was an incredible bartender and this winery/brewery is the coolest place I’ve been too. The wineries I have been to usually have a very limited selection of sweet wines. They have a selection of six sweet wines that are different but delicious. I love this place!!! If you are in the area, you must stop!!!!
Sherry G — Google review
Don't know about the wines, but from the standpoint of the brewery it was just OK. The beer was meh, just one IPA at the time, and it was not that good, and the couple other beer styles I tried were much the same. Staff was very friendly and the place had a cool vibe.
Nathan B — Google review
My girlfriend and I visited the winery / brewery last week. This place is terrific! Colorful and charming interior with lots of interesting decorations, abundant seating outside in several locations around the building. Our server, Nicole, was fantastic. As the only ones there, she gave us full attention and served flights and beers with excellent suggestions and good conversation. Naughti Wines / Sick and Twisted Brewery is a top notch spot. We'll definitely be back during future visits to the area.

We had such a great experience here! The bartender was knowledgeable, fun, and made the whole tasting even better. We tried both the wine flight and the beer flight, and everything was fantastic. The spinach & artichoke dip was delicious, and we really enjoyed the creative “adult” themed names of the wines—it added a fun touch. We ended up taking home bottles of wine and some crowlers of beer because we couldn’t leave without them. Highly recommend this spot if you’re looking for great drinks, tasty food, and a fun atmosphere!

Great wines and more, very neat decor, gotta get u sum!

The place is big with lots of tables inside and maybe even outside if the weather is nice. They have a lot of beer and wine choices to taste. The pizza is decent, and it’s a big pie so be prepared to share.

We just had our wedding here at High Country Guest Ranch on October 12th, 2025 and it was absolutely amazing!! We 100% recommend having your wedding here or family reunion or whatever the occasion may be!! Tina and Bob who manage the ranch and the other employees are so friendly and they went above and beyond for us!! They saved us several times when we had stuff go wrong! They helped out wherever they could. We are so thankful that we chose to have our wedding ceremony and reception here! We stayed in the cabins and so did a lot of our family and friends! The scenery was so beautiful! Waking up and seeing the sun rising over the hills and trees! Breathtaking! My husband and I have already decided that we will definitely be going back to stay at the cabins for many years to come! If you want to have a gorgeous wedding, I highly recommend going here!!💛

Stayed at the Red Barn Cabin, 3 couples altogether. Cleanliness ok, no hand towels for kitchen or bathrooms, no nightstands in upstairs bedrooms with limited space around beds. No bath rug/mat. Brand new swimming pool with chair lift. Fire ring available, gas grill, picnic table, and enough chairs for 4 people for inside and outside dining, hot tub didn't work which was a main reason for selecting this place, especially riding the trails on our utv's. Internet, cell service, satellite can get spotty. Newer ownership looks to be making improvements. Access to utv trail maybe 1/4 mile away. If 1st trip to area with a utv/atv/orv, good place to stay to become familiar with area. General store has some food and snacks along with beer and wine. Place to park trailers. It is a working dude(ette) ranch which offers horse trail rides; horse pastures center of ranch, lived seeing them every day. Dirt road and parking lot. Can rent utv's here, seemed reasonable, especially considering you need to purchase 2 permits - one for Black Hills Forest $25 (can get at gas station 4 miles away) and another one for the roads $50 for being out of state - prepare and get ahead of time if possible otherwise we went to 3 county treasurer offices to get permit (Custer sold out on a Monday, Rapid City was 3 hour wait, Sturgis was success, but bring your social security card to get permit - the lady we spoke to for the state never mentioned this, will also need driver's license and proof of insurance which works for proof of ownership if in your name. Overall a good experience altogether and would recommend.

Direct TV didn't work the 4 days we were there. Something with their account. The coffee had mold and dried coffee in it. The roy Roger's cabin was nice comfortable beds. They have a nice pool and the location is great to access alot of activities.

The stay at High Country Guest Ranch was truly beautiful! The rustic and peaceful ambiance of the ranch were charming upon arrival. The home was clean and inviting, with comfortable furnishings and thoughtful details throughout. We stayed in #30 and the hotel tub was so relaxing in the evenings and enjoying the views of the surrounding landscape was especially enjoyable. Exploring the property was a fantastic experience, providing fresh air and a feeling of complete relaxation and refreshment. We also had a pool table in the basement. The kids enjoyed visiting the animals they had, goats, donkeys and ponies. The horses as well, my nieces enjoyed a wonderful trail ride! The hosts were friendly and helpful, ensuring a great and stay. I had left a very special item in the cabin and they were kind a helpful and mailed it to us. THANK YOU! High Country Guest Ranch is highly recommended for anyone seeking a tranquil and authentic ranch experience, especially for a wedding or reunion that is their specialty.

We had an amazing ride on the trail! Hope was a lovely guide and so friendly! We would do this ride again when we come back into the area.

We had a great ride for beginners and first-timers. The guides were patient with our 6-year old, building up her confidence. Great trail, want the smell in a candle.
Jeff B — Google review
All staff were friendly and knowledgeable, and went out of their way to make sure our trip was the best, from the lodge, to the trail rides, to the UTV rentals! Very nice atmosphere and we loved feeding the pig, goats, donkeys, and ponies. Rooms clean and beds comfortable, well-appointed accommodations and amenities including hot tubs for most rooms and nice pool, only 4 miles from Hill City but felt secluded, serene.

The CCC Museum of South Dakota is situated on the second floor of the Hill City Visitor Information Center. Despite its small size, it houses a wealth of information and artifacts related to the history of the Civilian Conservation Corps in South Dakota. Visitors can delve into the CCC's historical significance, particularly during the Great Depression. The museum boasts a remarkable collection of photos and items, thoughtfully arranged to provide an engaging insight into the CCC's impact.
This is a small but very well done museum covering aspects of the CCC during the 1930s. Such an interesting time and collection of events. The curator is amazing and very informative! Definitely something to consider when visiting the Black Hills!

Love this museum! Folks were very friendly and informative! Love the CCC and all it did for our country. Very kid friendly and several additional informational exhibits downstairs. My kids quoted facts about the town during the rest of our stay as we visited several places in the black hills! Very small but expertly executed museum! Reminds you of what history is all about. Reading original documents, letters with firsthand accounts, and original artifacts and photos. Such a treasure and special place. So glad we stopped by! And I love my engraved hammer!

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit. The museum staff was quite friendly and informative. We were looking for some information about a particular workman. Of course they had it, and a great deal more than we had expected. Very much worth a stop.

My partner and I, both talented artists residing in the Black Hills region, have a strong inclination towards exploring galleries. During our recent visit in the summer of 2022, we found ArtForms Gallery to be an incredibly inspiring and enjoyable experience. The multitude of distinctive and exquisite artworks on display astounded us. Furthermore, we had an enriching conversation with Michael Ward, one of the artists actively engaged in creating captivating artwork that day.
In traveling across the West we love to stop at local artist galleries. This place was a little gem! They have so many unique offerings. I could have blown my entire souvenir budget in the store. So glad I stopped in before they closed.

I love this shop! Anytime I'm I the area, I stop in. A wide variety of gifts - for others or to treat yourself. Many items you will never find in other stores

Art Forms hosts art from amazing Black Hills artists. There are many original paintings, pottery, photography, jewelry and more! They have really fun art at great prices.

My boyfriend and I are both artists in the Black Hills and enjoy visiting galleries. We were here just this summer, 2022. It was inspiring, fun and there were so many unique and beautiful artworks. We had a great time chatting with Michael Ward, one of the artists who was working that day about his artworks, the other artists and the cooperatives. There are three locations in the Hills. Would recommend!

A must-visit attraction in the Black Hills! The giant Smokey the Bear statue in Hill City is an iconic landmark that's perfect for families, nature lovers, and anyone looking for a fun photo op. Standing tall at 26 feet high, this impressive statue is a great reminder of the importance of forest fire prevention. The surrounding area is also beautifully maintained, with plenty of parking and amenities nearby. Don't miss out on snapping a picture with this beloved bear during your visit to the Black Hills!
