1Hell-Bourg

Mentioned on

Hell-Bourg, located in the Salazie commune of Réunion, is a charming village nestled in the Cirque de Salazie. Initially named Bémaho, it was later renamed after Admiral Anne Chrétien Louis de Hell. This area was once renowned for its thermal spas, with remnants of these facilities still open to visitors today. In the early 20th century, it was considered one of the most fashionable villages on the island and even boasted a casino.

Cascade du Voile de la Mariée is a stunning waterfall located on the road to Cirque de Salazie. The name of the waterfall comes from a tragic love story. After rainfall, the cascade becomes even more impressive, as it consists of multiple waterfalls descending from the Belouve plateau. Visitors can stop at the water tower and follow signs to reach a path offering magnificent views of the bottom of the waterfall.
Nice overlook constructed for a fine view. But better is the hike! Fantastic place for a 1/2 day (or a bit more) hike. Saw plenty of people going at a good clip for exercise, but also families with young children taking it at a leisurely pace. Fairly steep in some areas. The village below is quaint and homely. Friendly locals to greet you, some selling e.g. honey. The cascade itself is very nice, one can take a dip to cool off from the descent.

Hiking Trails
Trou de Fer is a breathtaking scenic canyon located in the Belouve forest, boasting numerous waterfalls, streams, and lush vegetation. It is home to one of the world's largest waterfalls and the tallest in France, with a drop of over 300 meters. The canyon features several cascades flowing into a lower basin amidst the characteristic verdant vegetation of the region.
If you are lucky and have a view you will have a 5/5 view. If you go there and you miss the view, it will suck - we were lucky, absolutely worth the 5 km hike that way :)

Beautiful. Arrive before 9:30am to have a view without clouds. Avoid the muddy sentier and take sentier de l’école normale which is cleaner but much longer.

Mafate is a captivating caldera formed by a volcanic collapse, and it can only be reached by hiking or helicopter as there are no roads leading to it. Reunion Island offers over 1000 kilometers of hiking trails suitable for various levels of hikers. One recommended route is the footpath between Hell-Bourg and the Belouve plateau, which provides stunning views of the Salazie cirque and Piton des Neiges.
Probably our favourite cirque because: 1. the road is the least nightmarish of the three 2. the lookout point (Le Maido) is spectacular, and one actually get a feeling of the scope and vastness of a cirque 3. you can clearly see the highest peak of Reunion from here. 4. you can grab a bite to eat or a cold one at the on site shop.
Mel K — Google review
Réunion is my personal Garden of Eden. Among the countless highlights of the island one stands out even more: the Mafate valley basin. Given some luck with the weather you can spend countless hours or even several days completely away from civilization. The only minor disruption is the occasional helicopter flight. Otherwise in certain areas and at certain times you literally encounter no one. When you do come across human settlements, especially La Nouvelle, they appear almost like a Fata Morgana. The standard routes from Col de Boeuf to Marla to La Nouvelle (to be completed within 7 to 8 hours) are technically not difficult and the paths are never exposed. Some fitness helps, but it’s pure enjoyment hiking! Start as early as possible even in the “dry season” as the first significant clouds start forming around 10 a.m.

Mountains
Piton des Neiges, the highest peak in the Indian Ocean, is a dormant shield volcano with extensive hiking trails. Starting from Cilaos, visitors can embark on a challenging trek to reach the summit at 3,071 meters. The picturesque village of Cilaos offers a serene setting surrounded by mountains and charming streets to explore. The journey to Piton des Neiges also includes breathtaking views of lush greenery and cascading waterfalls in the volcanic caldera of Salazie.
Incredible view from up top, takes 3 hours if you go fast from the trail head to which you can take a bus from Cilaos. Climbing to the top is cold until you see the Gite but once you are in the sun, it gets hot again. The experience is truly worth it.
RV — Google review
Must-do hike! Count 4 hours of climb for good hikers. Same for the descent if you want to preserve your knees. 3 hours surely for the good descenders! Expect to arrive at least 30 minutes before sunrise. ESSENTIAL: bring warm, dry clothes to watch the sunrise. On our side we had two layers down. 3 layers on top + survival blanket and we got very cold. Provide gloves and hat! Good hike!! If you're looking to use the services of an ethical P.I, I would recommend Mcrae Investigations Agency for all your investigative needs. Pet monitoring devices, kids phone tracking applications, recover lost or stolen data, acquire information for court cases and lots more. See mcraespy at outlook dot com for a free consultation. This sunny day has allowed us to fully experience Reunion, an intense island! The peak is a good place for hikers to see the Grand Bénare, Mafate and Salazie ice craters.
Charles A — Google review
This is great peak with beautiful landscapes and view🙂 The trail is hard and long with more elevation. First part is with steps 1000m elevation to the refuge. Second part is with mountain trail. We begining climb on the 12:00 in the night. And on 6:00 in the morning arrive in the refuge for sunrise. With little slow tempo without rest. First plan was to going for the sunrise on the peak. The trial its not very hard, becouse its hot. I think if you going on the day, is very hot.
Nik B — Google review
Great hike with an amazing view. The hike is much more easier than some describe. The official time for the hike from the parking lot is 7h. We went during night so we would be there at sunrise. It took us 3,5h up and 2h down (We are not pro hikers, but we had quite a fast pace). It's really cold up there though (3°C) with a strong wind. We came too early, the sun rises just 3min before it rises down on the coast, but it was worth the waiting.
Tomáš Š — Google review
Excellent climb. Very good path. Even though it is better to climb up afternoon and have rest at the gite till 3-00 morning, so you can reach the peak on sunrise. Please, note it is very cold at the top, better to have warm and windproof cloth. Descending is more easy at the morning, since most of the time mornings are dry.
Volodymyr R — Google review
Hiking Piton des Neiges is hard, painful and tiring. True life experience where you struggle hard to reach your goals. Its not the destination thats important but the journey to reach it! Watch the amazing sunrise from tip of the mountain, enjoy the breath-taking 360 view of the island! Worth the effort! Gain with Pain :)
Akki S — Google review
A Beauty and A Beast of a Mountain. Biggest in the Indian Ocean and you really have to discover your deep roar to get it done. The walk up is epic, starting after breakfast and a good night's sleep, remember sun lotion and hat. Set off from 'the bloc', a few miles by car from the Cilaos Town. It's such a fresh and beautiful place, quietly filled with climbers and locals waving at each other, Ciloas is a safe relaxed town, 2 hours drive from Saint Denis. The Mighty Piton Des Neiges Mountain was done in 8 hours total, walking steadily, relaxed and balanced, with time to chill with the cat at the mountain hut, 3 quarters of the way up. The path is well marked, yet one must not day dream for too long. There are enough water stops, and people to say Halo Bonjour to, as we acknowledged each other passing by amongst the clouds and sunshine.
A1lyHall — Google review
Difficult hike but the view is worth the effort. Try to get to the top early in the morning to avoid clouds.

Mountain peak
Piton d'Anchaing, standing at 1,352m in the Cirque of Salazie, is a remarkable geological formation and a designated World Heritage site. Its name is linked to a slave who sought refuge on this isolated headland. The area was once a spa town but has now become popular among hikers, with the Piton d'Anchaing being a favorite spot.
The climb is difficult but definitely worth it. We needed a bit more than 2h for the climb and again 2h for climbing down. Really nice view, and this particular mountain does not seem to get the typical clouds on it after the morning (at least not in our case).

(Translated by Google) Mountain with historical significance, there is also a view in all directions from the viewpoints. The mountain itself sits enthroned in the middle of the valley. The climb is steep in the upper part, partly white directly on the slope and also very slippery in places after a rainy day. Surefootedness is then even more necessary in order to get up and, above all, back down safely. (Original) Berg mit historischer Bedeutung außerdem gibt es von den viewpoints einen Blick in alle Richtungen. Der Berg selbst thront mitten im Tal. Maison Folio is a typical 19th-century Creole house located in Hell Bourg, offering visitors a glimpse into the daily life of the past inhabitants and insights into Creole culture. The well-preserved house and garden provide an authentic experience, with period handcraft displays and aromatic plants. While the guides primarily offer information in French, the beautifully maintained garden features a variety of plants and fruit trees.
Interesting not only for gaining some insight into the history of this little village but also for botany enthusiasts. The garden is beautifully designed with a mix of fruits, herbs and orchids that make the entire area around the pavilion and fountain a real visual delight. The €5 entrance fee is well spent.

Col des Bœufs is a mountain pass and viewpoint offering panoramic vistas and access to several hiking trails. It serves as the entrance to Mafate cirque, one of the three cirques along with Cilaos and Salazie. The only way to access it is through Salazie from St Andre, which takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes. From here, visitors can view both Salazie and Mafate at the same time.
A viewpoint for everyone and the starting point for those who want to hike into the Mafate valley basin. Even in the dry season and on really nice days the first clouds roll in by 10 a.m. at the latest, so the basic rule for both groups is to set off very early. The guarded paid parking lot is apparently only intended for overnight visitors, everyone else can park for free a few hundred meters away.

This is the entrance to Mafate cirque, one os the 3 cirques along with Cilaos ans Salazie. The only acces here is by Salazie coming from St Andre. It takes around 1h30 from St Andre to get here. Mafate is the only cirque qccesible by foot! You have here the opportunity to view Salazie and Mafate from above merely at the same time! There is a guarded parking if you wanna hike to Mafate which costs 14euros per night and i think 7 per day. I live in Reunion Island and it is been now more than 10 times I have been to Mafate by Col des Boeufs and i left my car in the parkings (non giarded) before this guarded on and nothing happened! Take good care driving case at times might be slippery! When the sky is clear you have amazing views over the Salazie and Mafate. Take some clothes, it is chilly to very cold during the season. Near the shore you may have 30° and at the Cole you may find 20° or even less

Le Be-Mahot is a charming hamlet located about 3.5km from Hell-Bourg, featuring picturesque Creole houses perched on the hillside. (Translated by Google) We stayed at this hotel for the start of our honeymoon. The welcome was very pleasant, the staff responsive and attentive, which is a real plus. The private jacuzzi is truly relaxing, the location is ideal, and the room was clean upon arrival. A few points could be improved: the bed was a little hard for our liking, and we were surprised to find the sink drain completely clogged (there was rice in it—probably left by previous guests), which we had to unclog ourselves. The breakfast was very basic at first (juice from a carton, day-old bread), but it was improved after speaking to the staff. Finally, as it was a honeymoon stay, we expected a little attention (like the decor seen in the photos with the towel swans), but this wasn't the case. Overall, a good stay despite a few details that could be improved.

Forêt de Bébour is a protected hiking area offering trails through tamarind and cedar forests, leading to waterfalls and mountain peaks. Visitors can explore the stunning landscape on foot, with options to walk through the neighboring forests of Bebour and Belouve or take a helicopter ride for breathtaking views over Trou de Fer. The forest offers various hiking routes of different lengths and altitudes, ensuring there's something for everyone.
Lots of hiking options with different lengths and changes in altitudes. It’s often a round-trip so you cannot really get lost. The forest is beautiful and you can spot many different kinds of birds and count in that if you like to look around and observe the wildlife, your trip might take longer than suggested by the info provided on the trails. I would recommend good walking shoes because it can get very muddy and sometimes you also need to climb up some rocks, over some trees (easy, but you need a good sole for a safe step). We downloaded google maps map to get to the forest and rented a car. We stopped at the La Plaine-des-Palmistes and visited the tourist information spot where we got a map and a pamphlet with different trails (name of the trail, brief description, time estimation, change in altitude). Then we drove towards the forest, stopped at the viewpoints and looked for our chosen trail. All the trails are marked on the side of the road and there is a small parking area next to each-as there is only one road leading up the mountain/forest, you cannot really miss any of the trails. I wouldn’t recommend a guided tour as it costs a lot of money and you can easily do everything by yourself with a little resourcefulness.

The hike to the waterfalls offers an exhilarating experience through lush woods, though some parts can be steep and slightly overgrown.
Short but steep hike. Well worth it as when you get to the end of it you’ll swim by the waterfall.
Diogo W — Google review
Nice hike to this waterfall. Not so easy to climb when it's little wet. The first hike near the houses pay attention there where dogs run free. My children's don't like it and the run after us 300m in the hike. The waterfall is nice but small. There is a small place for swimming. The hike is around 40 min und you have to wear good walking shoes.
Mike K — Google review
A bit of a hike , very steep . Unfortunately I could not reach the waterfalls, but the drone helped 😊
Matthias M — Google review
The hike is certainly not as easy as advertised. We wanted to easy today - this was short but otherwise the same level of difficulty as yesterday‘s hike which had been advertised as moderate-difficult. The waterfall wasn’t really that great - after some great hikes on the island wouldn’t recommend this one.
Tanja G — Google review
Short, nice hike through the woods to a nice waterfall. The path can get a bit steep at times. Takes about 1 hour each way.
Stephanie K — Google review
Beautiful, but when we were here, there was not a lot water (Nov 2019). The trail to the waterfalls was somewhat difficult in parts because the last part was not very visible (a little overgrown) and partly broken off.

Frankly said, after 30 mins of sweaty and steep walk from Hell Burg, I expected a bit more from the waterfalls. But ok, the nature in Reunion is beautiful by default :)
