Desert
Plaine des Sables is a high-altitude plateau with volcanic rock formations, offering a lunar-like landscape that seems straight out of a science fiction movie. The area was formed by a volcanic eruption around 1000 years ago, creating an otherworldly environment of red ochre tephra. Visitors can explore the arid and sterile plateau on foot or by driving along a dirt road with stunning views of the surrounding island.
An amazing site to see, knee-bending going down to climb the slumbering old volcanic heaps - piton de la Fournaise - and heart and knee crunching going up. It is worth every minute of it. The views going down and coming back up is just spectacular. Don’t know what mars looks like, but I feel i have been to the mountain top and seen …. (Do I need to say more?). If one ever visits this amazing island, mark it as one of the places to visit. Be careful of the very winding road though, it requires formula 1 patience and tact. Try and let those white mini vans pass when you spot them in your driving mirror. The speed at which they drive on the stomach curling turns is mind boggling. But leave them to it and just get out of the way when it’s possible.

Unique barren landscape with marvellous vistas. The sad side is the peeing and toilet paper at every corner of the trails left behind by the almost entirely French tourists - simply disgusting!

(Translated by Google) La Plaine des Sables is truly a unique place. The landscape is incredible, it feels like you're on Mars. You're above the clouds, surrounded by red earth and silence. It's breathtaking. One small drawback: the road is in poor condition in places, with quite a few potholes. Even though roadworks are done twice a year, it's still damaged. In any case, I highly recommend it. It's a unique experience, whether for the scenery, the atmosphere, or just to disconnect for a moment. A little tip: Come early in the morning or early afternoon to avoid the crowds and bring warm clothes because it can get quite chilly up there, even in full sun ☀️ (Original) La Plaine des Sables, c’est vraiment un endroit à part.

Mountains
Piton des Neiges, the highest peak in the Indian Ocean, is a dormant shield volcano with extensive hiking trails. Starting from Cilaos, visitors can embark on a challenging trek to reach the summit at 3,071 meters. The picturesque village of Cilaos offers a serene setting surrounded by mountains and charming streets to explore. The journey to Piton des Neiges also includes breathtaking views of lush greenery and cascading waterfalls in the volcanic caldera of Salazie.
Incredible view from up top, takes 3 hours if you go fast from the trail head to which you can take a bus from Cilaos. Climbing to the top is cold until you see the Gite but once you are in the sun, it gets hot again. The experience is truly worth it.

Must-do hike! Count 4 hours of climb for good hikers. Same for the descent if you want to preserve your knees. 3 hours surely for the good descenders! Expect to arrive at least 30 minutes before sunrise. ESSENTIAL: bring warm, dry clothes to watch the sunrise. On our side we had two layers down. 3 layers on top + survival blanket and we got very cold. Provide gloves and hat! Good hike!! If you're looking to use the services of an ethical P.I, I would recommend Mcrae Investigations Agency for all your investigative needs. Pet monitoring devices, kids phone tracking applications, recover lost or stolen data, acquire information for court cases and lots more. See mcraespy at outlook dot com for a free consultation. This sunny day has allowed us to fully experience Reunion, an intense island! The peak is a good place for hikers to see the Grand Bénare, Mafate and Salazie ice craters.

This is great peak with beautiful landscapes and view🙂 The trail is hard and long with more elevation. First part is with steps 1000m elevation to the refuge. Second part is with mountain trail. We begining climb on the 12:00 in the night. And on 6:00 in the morning arrive in the refuge for sunrise. With little slow tempo without rest. First plan was to going for the sunrise on the peak. The trial its not very hard, becouse its hot. I think if you going on the day, is very hot.
Nik B — Google review
Great hike with an amazing view. The hike is much more easier than some describe. The official time for the hike from the parking lot is 7h. We went during night so we would be there at sunrise. It took us 3,5h up and 2h down (We are not pro hikers, but we had quite a fast pace). It's really cold up there though (3°C) with a strong wind. We came too early, the sun rises just 3min before it rises down on the coast, but it was worth the waiting.
Tomáš Š — Google review
Excellent climb. Very good path. Even though it is better to climb up afternoon and have rest at the gite till 3-00 morning, so you can reach the peak on sunrise. Please, note it is very cold at the top, better to have warm and windproof cloth. Descending is more easy at the morning, since most of the time mornings are dry.

Hiking Piton des Neiges is hard, painful and tiring. True life experience where you struggle hard to reach your goals. Its not the destination thats important but the journey to reach it! Watch the amazing sunrise from tip of the mountain, enjoy the breath-taking 360 view of the island! Worth the effort! Gain with Pain :)
Akki S — Google review
A Beauty and A Beast of a Mountain. Biggest in the Indian Ocean and you really have to discover your deep roar to get it done. The walk up is epic, starting after breakfast and a good night's sleep, remember sun lotion and hat. Set off from 'the bloc', a few miles by car from the Cilaos Town. It's such a fresh and beautiful place, quietly filled with climbers and locals waving at each other, Ciloas is a safe relaxed town, 2 hours drive from Saint Denis. The Mighty Piton Des Neiges Mountain was done in 8 hours total, walking steadily, relaxed and balanced, with time to chill with the cat at the mountain hut, 3 quarters of the way up. The path is well marked, yet one must not day dream for too long. There are enough water stops, and people to say Halo Bonjour to, as we acknowledged each other passing by amongst the clouds and sunshine.

Belvédère de Bois Court offers a stunning panoramic view of rolling valleys, woods, and meadows. Visitors can enjoy the peaceful and picturesque surroundings while having a picnic at the shelters. For those seeking adventure, there is a steep but rewarding hike down to the Grand Bassin Waterfall, offering breathtaking views of the scenic plunge pool along the way. The trail is well-maintained but requires reasonable fitness levels for the round trip that takes a few hours.

The view from the lookout point is already spectacular, but it is highly recommended to hike the trail that goes down to the Grand Bassin Waterfall. The trail is in good condition, but it is steep at some points, so you need to be in reasonable good shape. The round trip requires a few hours. There are some amazing views of the waterfall and its scenic plunge pool from the trail before you reach the small settlement below.

Museum
Specialty Museums
Volcano House is a captivating interactive museum that delves into the fascinating world of volcanology. Visitors can explore engaging exhibits, enjoy thrilling 4D movies, and experience holograms and immersive experiments that bring the science of volcanoes to life. While most information is presented in French, some staff members are eager to assist English-speaking guests. The museum offers a wealth of knowledge about Reunion Island's volcanic history and natural wonders, making it an educational stop for all ages.
Very fun museum. We didn't have enough time for everything, I think you should reserve 2-2.5h to take in everything, 1.5h as a minimum. Most things are in french, but a couple films has english subtitles, and the interactive displays with information and quizes are in english too. Learnt a fair bit about volcanos but historically and geographically
Denise J — Google review
We were quite disappointed with our stay today. The building is simply worn out in many places, many digital elements were defective and unusable and, above all, I was shocked by the lack of internationality. This is really not worthy of such a renowned museum. Most of the non-digital elements have bilingual headings, but the texts themselves are only available to French-speaking visitors. As a result, the positive emotional component of a good museum was completely absent and frustration took its place. However, I don't want to hide the fact that the museum also has some positive aspects to offer. The basic design is very appealing, many good ideas have been realised and the diverse digital offerings are available in English. The theme is of course spectacular and therefore has a lot of potential. All in all, I hope that the museum finds its way back to a higher quality and offers the non-digital services in several languages.
Eddy K — Google review
Everything ONLY in French. Very open for turism.... Actually they disengaged us to enter first saying it takes 2h to visit the museum (so??? It is up to us how much time we spend visiting each item) and then saying few times that all is in French. 9 EUR a ticket... so after this introduction we have not entered.

Very interesting and easy way to learn about volcanoes 🌋, interactive museum, kids also can participate. 4D cinema show for kids over 5 year's old. Don't forget the souvenir shop for nice local products.
Bestel J — Google review
Very nice demonstration and explication, as good and interactive for both adults and children. The 4D cinema brings a nice touch at the end of the visit and the boutique has also a nice collection of items, books and hiking gears. The entrance offers to see the work of local artists. We did it on the way back from the volcano, which I believe is better due to either the high sun or the rain. Loads of restaurants and snack places around too. Takes about 1h to complete, more if you read everything in details.
Aurore A — Google review
This place was incredibly informative and I learned so much about the volcanos and history of the island. I would definitely recommend going here because you learn so much about reunion island and its history and about the nature and types of volcanoes. The four d cinema had my cousin laughing so hard it was funny. The cappuccino in the machine was good too. It was a little bit dated and was in need of some physical repairs but otherwise I enjoyed it very much.

Interactive, interesting, professional. All in French at the door and staff there not helpful if you don't speak French. For instance: we tried to access the translate/guide app but found it impossible. Were told the information video is only available in French, went upstairs where a total sweety said that it is in fact available in English, left her post to go downstairs and organise it for us. Wish the rest of the staff were as helpful. The quick 4D video was also a blast. Even if you are only a little bit interested in volcanos, go to Volcano House, it's very informative. And let's face it, volcanos are what Reunion is about.
Mel K — Google review
After being a few days in Reunion it was great to learn about how all of the stunning and varied landscapes of the island were created by volcanic activity. The museum has an app for audio guide which works really well (I loved that you could switch off the screen and let it play like a music app). It was intuitive on which audio corresponded to which panel thanks to pictures in the app. The audio guide was very captivating and made in the form of a conversation rather then normal lecture. Great interactivity and graphics. Pretty fun also the experience of the 4D movie. It definitely made my visit of Reunion special!
