The Oxford is a stylish restaurant and bar located in a historic 1925 building. It offers a diverse menu of creative bistro dishes, with options ranging from steak to seafood. The establishment has garnered positive reviews for its European and New Zealand cuisine, making it a popular choice among locals and visitors alike. With its chic ambiance and delectable offerings, The Oxford provides an inviting dining experience for patrons looking to savor flavorful meals in a unique setting.
I had a great experience at this restaurant the other day. The interior is both elegant and inviting, creating a sophisticated ambiance. We visited for lunch as a group of 8 including locals who are regulars here. Many of us opted for the highly recommended their “Chefs pie”: Beef & Ale Pie, a generous portion of flaky pastry filled with savory beef, buttery cabbage, creamy mashed potatoes, and rich gravy. It was a delicious and satisfying choice. The other dishes ordered by our group were equally well-received. The staff was friendly, attentive, and made us feel welcome. We'll definitely be returning to this wonderful restaurant.

We visited The Oxford for lunch and tried the prawn pasta and crumbed sole fillets from the lunch menu. The prawn pasta was quite average – we expected the prawns to be the highlight, but they tasted like frozen prawns, and the sauce lacked a noticeable tomato flavour. However, the ham in the pasta was quite tasty. The crumbed sole fillets were definitely the highlight. The fish was fresh and tender, pairing well with the tangy tartar sauce. The sides had bits of bacon and corn, which were nice, though the broccoli was a bit undercooked. Overall, apart from the fish, the dishes were fairly standard, but we enjoyed the meal. What made our visit extra pleasant was the service – the staff were all smiling and welcoming, which made us feel warm and comfortable.

Popped in for lunch with the folks and had a lovely time. The two ladies out the front were dynamite, efficient and friendly. The food was excellent, great job chefs! You HAVE to try the Korean Chicken Bowl, it's absolutely delicious and will warm the cockles of your heart. The rooms have a cool, nicely renovated, but still yester-year charm. Highly recommend The Oxford in Timaru.

Fabulous place with fantastic food ! The wild venison is a banger because the chef serves it with blue cheese ! The association of flavors is unique. A MUST DO when you stop in Timaru !

The Oxford is one helluva restaurant in Aotearoa - showcasing the best of NZ flavours - lovely service, the best food I’ve eaten over the year - bloody perfection venison and beef wise - plus the prawn salad a light delight. A must on any foodies tour - well done team!

A must if you're in Timaru. Beautiful, delicious food. Staff friendly, professional, and attentive. We ordered Eggs Benedict, French toast and the chefs pie. Yum to all of it. Coffee was good and the juices fresh and cold. Would highly recommend.

One of the best restaurants. Such a pleasant surprise for my trip to Timaru. Food was amazing. I had the venison which was delicious. Topped off with the chilli cake dessert which was shared. Totally wowed! Definitely a must visit highly recommend and will come back on my next trip South.

Steak house
Restaurant
Steak @ Customs House is a top-notch steakhouse in New Zealand that has quickly become a favorite among diners. The restaurant offers an impeccable location and ambiance, along with outstanding food. The meat is cooked to perfection, being both tender and juicy. The truffle mushroom appetizer and truffle potato are particularly memorable dishes. However, the highlight of this establishment is the exceptional service provided by the polite, professional, knowledgeable, and classy waiting staff.
First time (not the last) at this place. The cuisine is exceptional and the service attentive. Can't believe we haven't been here before now. Attention to detail on everything. We had; beef fillet, venison fillet, sides of green beans and bacon, onion rings (not frozen). Starters of prawn balls and pork belly bites... Awesome.
Neil — Google review
I was pretty disappointed because we were expecting some good quality beef, but the beef we got was overcooked, a bit dry, and really chewy, but duck fat fries were good. On the bright side, the appetizer was good!
Elva B — Google review
The quality and presentation of the food was exception but found the atmosphere a little strange, was like dining at Fawlty Towers with the head chef appearing randomly out of the kitchen a little like Basil Fawlty, was expecting Manuel to show up at some point :) That aside, we really enjoyed the food they served us and all dishes were perfectly cooked, highly recommended if in the area
Nigel — Google review
Excellent fine dining experience. I'm a regular customer, the food is second to none, the service while more akin to an older style of restaurant experience (ring to book) is fantastic, the setting is definitely different but if you like older architecture this will definitely tick the boxes.
Sam V — Google review
I had worst experience. Unfriendly service, awful tasting food and deppressing vibe of furniture and poor lightings. Main server was dismissive, unwelcoming with question mark on his face that why are you there. I would not recommend going there especially if you are person of colour.
Sany F — Google review
Great restaurant we came at a very quiet time (between Xmas and new year) top service and absolutely delicious perfectly cooked Sirloin. My wife enjoyed the chicken both were fabulous tasting dishes. Thank you.
Broadcast N — Google review
Probably my new favorite steakhouse in NZ so far, every is just right, the location and ambiance are impeccable, food id great, the meat is perfect cooked to our liking, super tender, juicy and delicious, the truffle mushroom appetizer and truffle potato are particularly unforgettable, the highlight, however, is the exquisite service, our waiting staff is unbelievably polite, professional, knowledgeable and classy, like everything else in this restaurant, which is sadly so hard to come across these days. I will most definitely be back to Timaru just for the place. Do make reservation or check their availability ahead to avoid any disappointment, which happens often.
Carl H — Google review
One of the best steaks I have had for sometime. Delicious, appropriately medium to well done and extremely juicy. (Most places just make it well done when u order medium to wellish) Service was a little slow but worth the wait. 68$ with a drink and a dessert. Dessert was not worth 15$ though.. probably skip the dessert ..

Thai restaurant
Earlier today, we visited Sukhothai Thai Restaurant & Bar for lunch. The staff, including the waitresses, chef, and boss, were extremely friendly and patient. We savored their delicious and extraordinary authentic Thai cuisine. Our favorite dishes included the braised pork knuckle, red curry, Tom Yam soup, and beef dish. Additionally, the chef kindly fulfilled a special request from my husband for minced pork omelette that wasn't on the menu. It was a truly satisfying experience!
Food: incredibly delicious, tasty, flavourful, you name it. This restaurant specializes in high-protein dishes. When you order certain meats, expect a generous plate full of meat, cooked with delicious spices. If you prefer more vegetables, it’s recommended to order them separately. Impression: First time trying and will come back for sure.
Otty W — Google review
It is a busy restaurant, a lot of customers, my partner is satisfied with his rice noodles, but for me, too much oil in the meals. I order a stir-fried beef, But this beef is deep fried and the flavor seems sweet and sour beef, Maybe kiwi guys like it. By the way. Reasonable price, so I think that is why so much people have a meal in there .
Lisa Q — Google review
Be aware that the meal you requested may not be what you asked for. My wife asked for stir fried chicken and cashews. The chicken was battered swimming in sweet and sour sauce with mushrooms and a few cashews. Before starting the meal l explained the error, but the waitress insisted it was wrong. My wife ate some of the meal, not the mushrooms which she doesn't like. When l went to pay l asked to see the manager who didn't front up. I showed the photo of my wife's meal and compared it to the menu photos. All l got was, that's the style we do the stir fry. We have dined at many Thai restaurants and they are always respectful and honest. They are not. Take your chances. My apologies to those who posted warning of incorrect meals. You were right. My request for a discount was declined.
Anthony A — Google review
The portion sizes were a bit small, especially for the wasabi prawns starter—$17 for that plate just isn’t worth it. The pork we ordered was pretty salty and dry, but the Tom Yum soup was really authentic!
Elva B — Google review
We ordered Pad Thai and Tom Yum clear soup. The Pad Thai was okay, quite sweet and sour, which covered other flavors, but the beef portion was generous and filling. The Tom Yum was too strong in flavor, hard to eat without rice, and the chicken didn’t taste very fresh. Later, staff found out the order was wrong and refunded us $10, which we appreciated. Unfortunately, we didn’t get to try the correct Tom Yum clear soup, but we probably won’t return next time.
Christina K — Google review
Always my top 1 thai restaurant in NZ. Must try their Tom Yum clear soup, green curry, and sun-dried pork! 😋 The flavors are truly authentic and never disappoint, especially if you love spicy food.

First impressions were very good. Restaurant looked spacious and clean and the service was fast and friendly. The steak when it came was just as ordered. Well done yet not tough. Scallops however were dark brown when they arrived at the table. As suspected they were dry in sore need of the aioli they came with. Having waited nearly 40 mins for the food to come and knowing there was a large table sitting behind us I was reluctant to return the scallops as I didn’t want another long wait. Management were very good and did take money off the bill. If you are wanting scallops do not get them here.Staff assured me this is how they always cook them here and they’ve never had complaints before
Raewyn B — Google review
Absolutely loved it. The kids thought it was way better than bk and Mac Donalds so that says it all. Amazing atmosphere and staff could not pick on a single thing thankyous so much kids meals $15 adults between 20-$40
Richard T — Google review
A busy restaurant and the staff were extremely welcoming and friendly. The seafood chowder has a lot of real ingredients (I.e. fish pieces) and etc but it was little bit watery, not a lot of cream and flavour for my liking. The lamb shanks may need to be cooked a wee bit longer to make it a bit more tender, flavour-wise is very similar to the soup (needed extra pinch of seasoning). Overall it was a pretty good feed and I would recommend to others. Note: The mussels with a bit of garlic were really nice !!

Had dinner here last Thursday night. All 3 of us had steak cooked 3 different ways. All absolutely perfect. The service was outstanding. Our waitress was from Geraldine and was so lovely and friendly. My 4th time here and it just gets better and better. Keep up the good work guys. Can't wait for next trip down.
Janene W — Google review
The first staff member to meet us, wasn't helpful finding a table. Then an Indian staff member came over and helped, and he was super friendly and couldn't be more helpful. 5 stars for him. When placing an order, the staff were annoyed with basic questions about the food. Such a shame that we pay a lot of money for good food, and its a problem to ask if it'll be suitable or how fresh the item is. Customer service needs some fine tuning. Most the female staff were pretty unfriendly and its very off putting. Most of them didn't smile the whole time we dined. I work in hospitality, and even when you're busy, its not hard to share a genuine smile and ask how the meal was. Handy location. Food was nice, customer service needs a tune
SACHA M — Google review
We enjoyed an excellent dinner last night. The dish was well put together, fillet steak, with a fabulous sauce, one of best meals I have had in a long time. It was also reasonably priced The staff were friendly and very efficient at their job, thought the young waitresses were so courteous too. We will be back. Thank you.
Bella L — Google review
Went twice on our stay in timaru, best restaurant i have been to in ages. Staff were amazing ❤️
Kath D — Google review
The service is enthusiastic. The cooking technique is very good. The fried chicken was juicy. The venison was very tender. The grilled pork ribs are delicious. For us the portions are huge. Great value for money. Probably staff shortage. The only surprise is that we spent two nights in Timaru. The waiting time in both restaurants was very, very long, more than 45 minutes.
Jin J — Google review
The food was brilliant! Our table of 6 went full carnivore and the spread included the fillet, rib eye steak, Flinstone steak and the venison. Presentation of the meals was appealing and matched the flavour bursting out of each bite! The service was a touch slow. We had to seek out a waiter to assist a few times, however they were friendly and welcoming. The Flinstone steak is a 500gram rib eye bone in … and it was delicious! 🤤 Great restaurant for a team feed, family outing or just good food shared with great people.

This place is amazing. Everything was beautiful and the choices and variety are huge. Such great value for money to be able to get to eat such a vast range of incredibly cooked food. The way they cook their seafood is perfection as was all the protein. The staff were great, friendly and attentive keeping the plates cleared regularly. They were very patient with us as we were a bit ignorant on how it worked. We will now for next time. I think this will have to be my new favorite place to go for atmosphere, variety and the most delicious food. Thank you for an excellent dining experience.
Fiona T — Google review
It was an impromptu trip to Timaru for my husband's birthday. We drive around and found this place. The staff were lovely although it took a while to understand that dinner was only buffet style. Being called a Teppanyaki and grill place, you would think that you will be treated to a meal with some entertainment. But no, take note that it's a menu selection that you can choose whatever you like on the menu. Interesting concept. It's good if you go in a group and get to try all the dishes on the menu! The restaurant was spacious. Unfortunately, the floors and tables are sticky. Some of their menus needed to be cleaned too as it was sticky. The lights in the ladies toilet was out..I couldn't even see a lightbulb in the ceiling. Aside from the atmosphere. The food is surprisingly good. We ordered most things on the menu to try. And all were good. Just the teppan pork was slightly chewy and the beef takaki was not thinly sliced enough, so slightly chewy too. Overall, food 4 stars and the service was lovely which gives it 5. It's unfortunate, that the atmosphere makes it hard to enjoy it fully. ##Amended Add on##: It was really disappointing that we found out when we got home that our two kids were charged full price, even though we were told that both of them were half price. We don't always scrutinize the bills as we often trust the restaurant to be vigilant with their charging. Since it was a head count of 3 adults and 2 kids. We didn't think we need to doubt their charging. Again, disappointing. Especially when it was a birthday celebration. I've revised the service rating down slightly.
Charlene S — Google review
Fantastic restaurant. We recently had a large group booking here with a set menu and everything was perfect. The portions and variety were great. The staff were fab. Highly recommend.
Gabby K — Google review
The place was packed at 6pm on a Saturday night, even in these covid times so that was a good sign. We had the $42 banquet and there were plenty of good options for vegetarians. You filled in a card on what you wanted to eat next and they brought it to your table. Service was very quick and the staff super friendly. Food was good, we left feeling full and pretty happy.
Rod K — Google review
We went as a small group for 21st. The Service was very good and my wife had lots of gluten-free choices, we all enjoyed our food and will be back.
Warren T — Google review
So much wasted potential. Let me say first up the food was great, it really was. Beyond that were let downs that stop me going back. Firstly the table, floor and menus were all sticky. I just don't want that at a restaurant. They seemed busy, but the staff that met us struggled to explain their version and pricing for teppanyaki. It's NOT at the hot plate. More like tappas coming to you your table. It's buffet. I still don't understand it, and we certainly couldn't eat the full amount allowed. Maybe some people like that. We were told the children, x2 for us (3 adults), were not full price. Instead of $45 they would be $20-30. We got charged full price for both of them and my daughter only ate some sushi and dumplings. It simply want value for our family. We liked the food, but the experience, pricing and atmosphere ruined it sadly.
Andrew S — Google review
100% recommending this place! Fun with pick out own dishes, and food is soooooo yummy! Best place in town 👌
Miss V — Google review
Had premium buffet tonight, very good service. Food were good, more on the salty end. Service were good and fast! For Teppan range, I ended up asking for sauce-less, felt like the sauce is a bit heavy and covered the original taste of the food. Unfortunately, baby octopus and oysters were not available. Strongly recommend tofu salad to start with, with smooth. Also definitely recommend for meat lovers!

Pretty typical indian restaurant. Lots of options with over 300 menu items. Drinks and alcohol are quite cheap but curries are a little bit expensive. The tandoori mix seemed to be a great deals and was very tasty. Quick service and food turnaround although it was pretty much empty.

It was quite busy at lunchtime on Sunday, but it will be fine if you don’t book a table. The food is nice and filling, as mainly it’s made from potatoes and flour. Love the mango lassi which is made from Mango and yogurt, really thick. Two of us ordered a plate to share and a Nan bread, that’s all. The sauces are really good if you like a bit spicy. The prices are reasonable for lunch, average $20 each.

One of the best Indian Cuisine I had in NZ, recommend request for authentic Indian spiciness. Definitely go for their set menu (comes with starters, sides and mains), portion was generous and tastes so good! And also recommending their Briyani, Butter Chicken, and Mango Chicken. Price were slightly higher but it is well-worth it for the quality of foods! On the downside, foods usually take a while to be served.

I ordered this under "Rawson's sushi" on Uber Eats and was dissatisfied. Firstly, I added mayonnaise to my sushi which was not added. Secondly, the first dumpling I bit into had a massive hair in it 🤢 I would not order from them again.

Perched on the Bay Hill overlooking Caroline Bay, The Bay Hill Bar Restaurant offers a picturesque setting for enjoying food and drinks. Whether it's breakfast, lunch, or dinner, visitors can relax with a beverage outside while taking in the stunning views of Caroline Bay. The restaurant is known for its delicious and generous portions of food, from seafood chowder to aged rib eye fillet and scallops rolled in bacon.
I tried beef cutlet here for the first time, and it's really delicious and goes well with beer! The beach view is so pretty and wonderful.

I can't say enough about the food. It was so wonderful. The favor was fantastic. Both of the dishes were huge. Looked great. My husband had to eat at least a 1/3 of mine. I highly recommend the Bay Hill Bar and Restaurant. We went back here for breakfast. My husband had The Big breakfast plater, and I had the French toast, bacon, fried banana, with maple syrup and whip cream. It's a lot of food and very good!!! We also had the same waiter, Fletcher, he was very helpful and did a great job! Thank you to the cooks also. JOB WELL DONE!!!!

Why on earth would you put bangers and mash in a teeny tiny bowl? And, the Steak Sandwich was in a Bun! The food was ok, but the presentation was really way off. Coffee was not good.

Had the Salmon main which was superb and partner had the Lamb shank which he said was 9/10 ! Fabulous meals and very impressed how our table of 12 received all their Mains with in 2 minutes of each other, Highly recommend this Restaurant.

Went for a work dinner last night, we'd shown up slightly earlier than booked but wasn't a problem in the slightest. The wait staff were brilliant, the moment we needed a new drink someone was there to grab our order. Food was fresh and delicious! Thanks for such a lovely evening team!

Delicious food and generous portions. I can’t fault them. From excellent service from the staff to the unforgettable food, a small town bar provided a high quality restaurant experience. We were delighted with our choice. Try the aged rib eye fillet or the scallops rolled on bacon and add their crunchy chips. Amazing!

On a cold and wet winters day we stopped in for food and refreshments and immediately warmed up. Heaters were on and place was busy, a good sign. We had seafood chowder and vegetable soup both with garlic bread which was the only let down. Soup was tasty and chowder was full of fresh seafood. Staff were friendly and toilets were clean and modern. Would def visit again.

Delicious! Can't believe it was my first time here..great flavours and options we tried a few different plates and loved each one! Pork belly bao buns were definitely my favorite 😍 and the almond croffle.. yum!!

Love the vibes in Timaru. Dumplings and bao buns were great but the tom yum noodles were really strange (would not recommend this, go elsewhere in Timaru if you're craving Thai food...)

What a wonderful surprise. The ambiance was very good and the staff were very friendly and efficient. The food was absolutely on point, the paella was delicious, huge and so damn good it eclipsed all others I have tried. I would return again just for the paella. Thank you for a wonderful dining experience.

Went there with my partner as we were staying in Timaru for the night. Love the Asian fusion menu and the ambience in the restaurant. We ordered the beef cheek curry and salt and pepper squid, amazing flavours and reminds me of home. We finished off with the Thai fried bananas, absolutely enjoyed it. Crispy bananas with caramel and coconut ice-cream, perfect way to end the night.

Eggs on toast was divine. Service is very efficient and staff were lovely and friendly. There are plenty of seating options, very suitable for families. The decor is very cool, we loved looking around the different seating areas. We would definitely return next time we’re in Timaru!

Found this cute coffee place while craving for a cup. Tried their oat flat white and it was good. The café has a vintage vibe and different seating options in each room. The staff is lovely, making it perfect for long talks with friends. Prices are reasonable too!

3 Stars is very low for me, unfortunately our food was quite tasteless, the bacon chewy, & the hash browns soggy, & delivered cold due to the staff not keeping up with the 8 or so people ordering at once. We hope the staff can get the food to a better level as the coffee was great, and the cafe was in a great location & really well decorated. Will definitely return only for the coffee at this stage.

What a hidden gem (behind mitre 10). Every time we come to Timaru I tell my wife this is a compulsory stomp. Great people, great coffee and great food. You will not get better. You would have to have rocks in your head not to try it out.

Popped in for coffee, needed a large! Was offered XL, team member who served me was unwelcoming, very little communication, probably should’ve stayed home or chosen a different career! Received XL takeaway coffee, was the actual size of a small coffee at McD’s and once opened was only 3/4 full! To be fair, McD’s coffee literally tastes better as well. Come on Arthur Street, this is a rip off, not good enough, do better team!

On the 5th of July, 2023, a visit was made to Sopheze coffee shop in Invercargill for breakfast before embarking on a trek back down. No prior booking was required and the staff members were polite, courteous, and pleasant. The reviewer opted for the small breakfast while their wife and another person ordered eggs Benedict.
What a gem to find on our travels - they even serve porridge, brown sugar and cream for breakfast - who knew any other cafe that does that. Wonderful, friendly staff and atmosphere as well. Will be our go to place when travelling through Timaru now we have found this little gem

Perfect little breakfast spot. First time visitor and everything was as I expected. Good breakfast and great coffee and a cool vibe. Will definitely be back 😊😊

Sopheze is a cosy spot located right in the Timaru town centre. If you sit at the outside tables, you get a nice view of the street — great for people-watching while enjoying your meal. The food was okay — a classic café style breakfast with decent portions. Coffee was good and served hot. The atmosphere inside is relaxed with a local charm, and the service was friendly. It’s a nice casual place if you’re looking for a comfortable café stop in town.

Very nice place to visit. Really enjoy the Big Breakfast, and it doesn't matter who's on the machine, I've always had really nice coffees from here. The only very minor thing to mention is the acoustics. When there's a few people inside plus staff, it can very loud. But certainly doesn't put me off and there is outside seating available. Will happily go back when ever im in Timaru.

Awesome Japanese joint in Timaru - pretty authentic chicken karaage and yakitori. I think it was so good because you wouldn't expect to find such authentic/delicious Japanese fare in a smaller quieter town like Timaru. Two thumbs up! Yakitori was so good we had to do a repeat order! Better to make a booking because they fill up pretty fast both at lunch and dinner.

After much deliberation on a chilly evening in Timaru, we ended up at Golden Palace Chinese Restaurant. The staff were difficult to locate and the establishment was practically vacant, but we were pleasantly surprised by our experience. Our expectations were low, but the Fu Egg Yung turned out to be a well-cooked and flavorful omelette-like dish with a delightful texture. The Chicken cashew dish was also delicious and did not contain any undesirable frozen vegetables.

Honestly the worst Indian food ever had all over New Zealand in last 8 years and it was a total ripoff.$110.I think they are buying readymade curries and nans from supermarkets and then mix chicken or paneer while heating.Worst biriyani, worst chicken tikka masala, worst butter paneer.Only thing good was the plain rice that comes free, but how could we eat that alone.Shop was empty on a Saturday other than us and we were wondering why, and just gave a try, it was empty till we finished. I recommend nothing but run away or will regret.
Sojan C — Google review
I ordered a chicken tikka masala and a tandoori chicken from the store. Truth to be told those were the worst dishes i ever had. The chicken tikka was weirdly brown in colour and tasted like they mixed a bag of sugar. And the tandoori chicken was really dry and tasted cold and old. Definitely wont recommend it even for the worst enemies.
Subin J — Google review
Lovely food and generous portions. I ordered Lamb Vindaloo and a plain naan, both of which were very tasty. The naan was enormous and I personally think they make the best naans in Timaru. Quick and friendly service from a lovely lady working there.
Carrie — Google review
Sorry to say that this was the worst experience I had in my entire life. I had ordered 3 different kinds of food and was dining in the restaurant. But later decided to go home and finish the food later. The person who took our order was so rude and arrogant. We asked him to provide some takeaway containers to take the food home. Instead he decided to transfer everything to containers by himself. He took a container and mixed everything in it and gave it to me. What kind of food place mix 3 different kind of food in the same container and deliver it to the customer. Poor customer service at its peak. The owner need to learn more about food act 2014 and implement that in the store instead doing it just for council verification. Sorry, I hope the council will do justice to the customers with proper verifications of the place.

Pier 64 is a highly recommended dining spot with exceptional service and delicious food. The atmosphere and decor are lovely, and the staff goes above and beyond to ensure a delightful experience. Guests were impressed by the friendly wait staff who provided outstanding service. Despite being fully booked, the classy host managed to accommodate visitors within a reasonable time frame. The well-mannered and professional servers, such as Gabby and Bella, added to the overall pleasant dining experience.
We had the Trevally as the catch of the day and the seafood pasta. Both were EXCELLENT! Celiac safe as well.

I read abt the seafood chowder and i came for it. Flavour wise: quite good. Creamy and thick. Loads of ingredients, esp that nice smoked salmon piece. Yums.. Just slightly over-salted for me. I also had the squid as side, as recommended by the boss. Not too bad! Well seasoned and not over-fried. It would have been better if the squid had a firmer texture.. a bite to it. Service: the bossman was great. Nice guy, very friendly and all smiles.. the server well.. she's okie. Just didnt appreciate that she kinda 'dumped' the food on the table. Felt it was abit performatory. Butttt i suppose i could let it slide.. Atmosphere: quite good. Good crowd. Everyone's enjoying their time here. Lively. Great.

Amazing coffee! Lovely setting with an outdoor area that provides the perfect spot to soak up the sun! Scrambled eggs on toast were good, best served with eggs off the toast though (or you’ll have soggy bread).

I was craving the Biscoff drink, but I was really disappointed. It was incredibly sweet like drinking a glass of syrup. That’s about it. The cake wasn’t impressive either; it felt way too expensive for the quality of food.
Cheng Z — Google review
Genuinely disappointed both times I’ve been here. Coffee is poorly made (my cappuccino had zero foamed milk). The worst part, though - the eggs. I got the salmon keto once, and the bacon bene bagel the next, and on both occasions the eggs were dry and chalky. Will not be back.

Stumbled upon this lovely clean cafe in Timaru. The coffee was really good and the custard cheesecake was good too. The cabinet food looked good but didn’t try so cannot comment. I wish I had more time and hence the 4 stars for food and atmosphere. They have a good seating area outside.
Qazi A — Google review
This place has basically nothing for breakfast. When it arrived it was cold, except for the scrambled eggs, which were granular not solid! Frozen butter to spread on cold toast! Plate with sides, hard to cut food etc, especially with a blunt knife. AND for a coffee place, the coffee was COLD. Definitely not going back.
Geoffrey R — Google review
So disappointed in this place today. We took our three-year-old grandaughter out for a fluffy, after a visit to the playground. We sat in the kids area to wait for our order. My grandaughter was looking at herself in the mirror above the seats when the back of the seat came off in her hands and knocked her onto the hard tile floor. The seat is a H&S risk and the duty manager should have apologised. However, she instead came over and blamed my grandaughter and my husband for the accident. The back of the seat is completely unattached and it will happen again. I am pretty forgiving when accidents happen but the attitude of the duty manager was less than satisfactory. Update: the business owner contacted my husband to apologise profusely and assure him that the seat would be fixed. Thank you for acknowledging the problem. I have amended the review.

Litterly 1 piece of streaky bacon cut in half for both sides I asked the waitress wait were the bacon i didn't ask for eggs on toast she pointed to the scrappy tiny piece of bacon and said there. #India curry# Good choice for curry. I like the chicken than the goat. Nuaan is perfect with curry sauce. No extra sugar is heathy for me.
Lynn L — Google review
I recently visited here and tried their Chole Bhature and Dal makhani and it was absolutely delicious! The Chole was perfectly spiced, rich in flavor, and had that authentic North Indian taste I was hoping for. The Bhature were fresh, fluffy, and not overly oily, which made the meal even more enjoyable. Dal makhani was equally impressive—creamy, aromatic, and paired beautifully with the side of rice or naan Prices were reasonable for the quality and portion sizes. Whether you're new to Indian cuisine or a longtime fan, Little India is definitely worth a visit. Highly recommended!

Eaten Indian food in many countries but this rates as the worst I've encountered. Don't waste your money! Butter chicken watery and tasteless, Korma watery and tasteless and the vindaloo was hot (as ordered) but essentially flavourless. Very little meat some vegetables and the rest water. Cheese and garlic Naan came without cheese. The Kashmiri Naan was soggy and only contained peanuts. All in all really terrible.

We think this is the best Indian on the eastern seaboard. Very reasonable prices, super friendly and appreciative staff, quick cooking times, and honestly, the food is unparalleled.

Mrs M's cafe in the South Island offers one of the finest coffees in town that surpasses those offered by major chain brands. The establishment lives up to its reputation as the best coffee spot with a charming atmosphere and tasteful decor. Although some customers may prefer their coffee a tad hotter, overall, it is well-made and satisfying. Additionally, Mrs M's serves delicious food that exceeds expectations and is presented beautifully. The friendly and knowledgeable staff contribute to an enjoyable experience for patrons.

Probably one of the best coffees I had in South Island. Better than the big brand chains, and lives up to its sign in the street, 'Best coffee in town'. The only improvement would be to make the coffee a bit hotter. Nice atmosphere and well decorated medium sized Cafe. Well done. Thank you.

Sizzler steak was good with a gravy garlic sauce. With a pile of chips and old school salid like I used to get on the farm. So top points there.... My daughter had the chicken and cranberry burger. Great size with plenty of Chips too. Special menu for the 60+ which is popular based on the numbers here at dinner time. Gave up on the waiter coming back after clearing our plates for a desert order..

Food: 1. Seafood chowder: the flavour, i really like. But really.... surimi in the soup?!.. hmmm.. quite disappointing. But the flavour's good. Not too salty Not overly thick. 2. Honemade chocolate cake: abit too dense for me. The chocolate bit was good. But the cake was too heavy. Service was great. The old pub vibe was really nice.

We wandered in at 3 pm, when many other restaurants n the area were closed. We were completely happy there. We found a menu with a very good variety of choices. We all ordered the beef roast from the senior menu and had the optional carrot cake desert and a side salad. All our food was delicious and well prepared. We were impressed to find that all the vegetables were perfectly cooked to our liking, with noting overdone. We would not hesitate to go back.
Allan S — Google review
I'm very disappointed with the service tonight. We ordered a takeaway meal for 4 adults and a child. On ordering the bacon and mushroom pasta the person ordering accidentally mentioned chicken as almost everywhere else has chicken with their pasta. At the time of ordering this was never clarified before the end of the call. We got chicken and basil pasta instead. Upon realising this when getting home, we rung to explain there was a mistake and that we ordered bacon and mushroom pasta. We were asked if we wanted the correct meal made we replied yes. Then as we were talking we were hung up on mid sentence. Then at time of collection we were told we had to pay again. After refusing to pay for their error and discussion with management and still wanting us to pay half, the meal was left behind. This service was not acceptable. This could have been avoided if clarified at time of ordering, then again when we rung back about the mistake.

Harlau House Cafe is a delightful and peaceful spot to reconnect with friends. The cuisine is delectable, and the service is warm and accommodating. Their steak sandwich is a must-try. This establishment holds great promise for the exciting events unfolding this year in its charming historical setting. The ambience is pleasant, and the staff members are amiable. The seating arrangements are spacious and expansive, allowing for both indoor and outdoor options.
What a stunning setting! Even before I reached the restaurant itself, I was captivated. As my photos show, it has a serene rural feel with beautifully gardens, surprisingly close to town. A true gem! This restaurant is expansive, featuring diverse indoor and outdoor spaces. Separate large indoor areas and dedicated garden spaces suggest its suitability as a wedding venue, which is indeed the case. The decor throughout is exquisite. Six of us dined here, and each of us thoroughly enjoyed our meals. I followed a friend's recommendation and ordered the vegetable stack, which was beautifully presented and delicious. One of our party had fish and chips, and they praised the light, fluffy batter that wasn't greasy at all. Others savored the Creamy Cranberry and Chicken filo. We visited on a Friday lunchtime, so the restaurant wasn't overly crowded, but I can easily imagine it being a popular and bustling spot on weekends. Adjacent to the restaurant is a charming home and interior store, showcasing tasteful decor items. I would absolutely return to this restaurant if I were ever in Timaru again.

We had a baby shower event at Harlau House and everyone had the best experience there! The food was to die for, absolutely delicious, well presented and classy! The decor was stunning in general, well designed and thought out atmosphere! The fire was warm and cosy, even had a cake stand for the cake! They have a side door to the second dining area which makes set up of events a breeze! Plenty of parking too. They even have a playground for our small guests and a high chair available. The staff were so amazing, helpful, accommodating and the service was absolutely excellent! We are just so happy we chose Harlau House to host us! We will certainly be back for many events and eating out in general! Harlau House, we can’t thank you enough! 🤗❤️🎉🙌

Honestly, this is a destination visit! I have been there three times and keep getting blown away by how good the food is, quite simply: delicious. The people are always only too happy to help and so friendly. It has a cool playground for the kids, two Avery’s AND a really good fabric and furniture store right there as well. I cannot rate this highly enough, definitely book your table as it fills up. Looking forward to the next time I can go!

If you're in Timaru, a visit to Ballantynes is a must! This charming department store offers an impressive selection of quality products, making it the perfect spot for both locals and visitors seeking unique gifts or everyday essentials. The staff are incredibly helpful, with many going above and beyond to ensure you find exactly what you need. Plus, there's a delightful café on-site where you can relax with a coffee after shopping. During the festive season, don't miss their enchanting Christmas Grotto!

Pretty disappointing. Waited over 25 minutes to get a piece of pizza. The iced chocolate was nice but again a 20 minute wait when they weren't that busy. A shame as I have been here before and it was great service in the past.

I live in Timaru, my two sisters came from Australia and Christchurch to visit me.on Friday the 30/12/12 we went to the Balatynes cafe to have something to eat. We got some scones and muffins and ordered two coffees, I must mention here at that time the cafe was not busy at all.. the man who served us didn’t offer to heat the scone, he was not happy because I asked him whether we could have it heated. I could tell that he was annoyed, we were sitting at our table for 20 minutes waiting for the scone and coffees, the girl and at the coffee machine and the boy were looking at us and laughing and purposefully not serving us. Meanwhile they served to another person who came after us. When we realised what was happening we told them that we didn’t want the scone andthe coffee anymore but we wanted to talk to the manager for which he said there was no one we could talk to.but I went to the next counter and got the manager down. We got a refund .and we refused the one free coffee voucher she offered because i will not be going there any more. I know all about customer care, and treating everyone the same no matter what the colour or dress.

I walked through Ballantynes in Timaru yesterday. We came through the entrance by the Cafe in there. Beautiful Christmas trees lovely building but the Cafe is so plain. Why have such a plain Cafe area in the most upmarket department store in Timaru? It doesn't make sense. A let down that didn't encourage a stop for coffee. The rest of Ballantynes down stairs had many expensive items for the discerning buyer who loves quality and an experience. I took 2 stars off because the cafe did not suit the business.

We had lunch there 4/3/2025. I got large roast meal (largely so we could have a few veges to take away for later) & my wife had a pork sandwich. The food was good, but not sure the large roast was worth $26.50. If it had been say $20, I would have gone to 5 stars.

Had breakfast there the other day , the cook had to bring out the food. The cook had the personality of a shoe. The bacon was under cooked and the “Toast”, was only toasted on one side. Avocado “smash” wasn’t smashed. Horrible waste of money!

Went there with a group of work mates. Nothing worse than being in a place where you feel like you are inconveniencing them by placing orders. The salmon roulade was a sloppy mess, the eggs benny was hard boiled eggs and the coffee ordered was delivered incorrectly. When asked where a second drink was the lady snapped at us that she only has 2 hands. Would never go there again would rather go to night and day.

KFC is a popular restaurant chain celebrated for its iconic buckets of fried chicken, along with a variety of combo meals and delicious sides. While the KFC location in Timaru has been noted for slower service at times, dedicated staff can ensure that orders are prepared quickly when they’re on their game. Visitors often appreciate the friendly service, like Marissa at the checkout who adds a personal touch to your experience.
It’s been a long time since I’ve enjoyed kfc from Timaru but tonight was the night food was great but best part was Sam - she was brilliant- so helpful and made my order easy and worked out the best deal for me. I could hear her communicating with the rest of the team which meant our food was hot, tasty and very fast. Look after her she is an asset to the Timaru team😊

The food was good, however I would recommend on a slight improvement when it comes to having someone service the registers. Even with the electronic ordering some people still like to interact with the staff to order and it took what felt like 15mins before someone came to serve us. Other than that delay in service everything else was good and the food was fast to come out and the staff were nice.

Alongside their remarkable coffee, this establishment caters to both young and old patrons. They have amiable staff members and an array of seating options both indoors and outdoors.
Travelling through Timaru and needed a cafe with gluten free options. After some research I came across this little wee cafe. Nestled along the route to Christchurch, Wetlands Cafe is a delightful pit stop for travelers seeking a satisfying meal. Their mixed platter showcases an array of flavors, featuring crispy honey butter chicken made with local Hutton's Honey, alongside vegetarian and pork spring rolls, chicken satay skewers, beef wontons, and coconut prawns. The cafe prides itself on using fresh ingredients sourced from South Canterbury. Guests rave about the generous portions and delicious offerings like mini bao buns and perfectly cooked pork belly.
Stopped on our way too Christchurch for a coffee. They had plenty of selections in their food cabinet which tasted great. Their coffee was not that great to be honest (tasted bitter). Their mens toilet wasn't clean when we visited. Has a small outdoor seating and parking at the rear of the restaurant.

This cafe is just off the main road with parking round the back. Really busy and popular with locals at lunch time. The fried noodles were very bland and tasted like a ready meal you would get at the supermarket, definitely would not recommend. The fried chicken looked popular with locals so maybe that would have been a better choice. They also have many kiwi classics like sausage rolls which seemed popular. As a tourist passing through to Christchurch it would have been great to get access to wifi instead of using up my data to search google maps for directions. I asked for the wifi password but was told by the server that "they don't share wifi with customers" and looked at me like I had 'stupid' tattooed on my forehead. The place seems fine if you're from here but I would avoid if you're a tourist.

Awesome food here, this Turkish food would be the best we’ve had.

Hands down the best kebab I have had in the whole of New Zealand. I travel the country for work and I eat a kebab in every city I go to. The flavour profile and the freshness of this kebab was above and beyond. The service was lovely as well. I ordered a combo and wasn't keen on a dizzy drink, so I asked if I could please have more chips instead. The owner had absolutely no issue with this, and gave me such a generous portion of chips on top. If you ever stop for food in timaru, I would recommend this shop over anywhere else. The price is amazing and the food is even better. Thank you so much for a great experience guys!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5/5 I had such a great experience at Pita Pit Timaru! The food was fresh, tasty, and made exactly how I wanted it — you can really tell they care about quality. The staff were absolutely lovely, especially Syesha and Elizabeth. They were both super friendly, welcoming, and went out of their way to make sure everything was perfect. It’s always nice to be greeted with genuine smiles and great service! Highly recommend stopping by if you’re in Timaru — amazing pitas and even better people. 🌯😊

Popped into PitaPit Timaru on our way past for dinner whilst continuing down south. Store was rather busy and orders were coming out quite delayed. Two female staff on were doing their absaloute best and it's to be commended. Id think from a business perspective youd hire a third staff member for the dinner rush. Its a shame that no manager/owner was available as its the first time ive felt compelled to speak with one. Frankly I'm appaled it has a direct flow on effect to both your staff and your customers.

While it doesn't offer a traditional menu, patrons can indulge in an array of scrumptious options like their renowned steak and mushroom pies, which are generously filled and have become a personal favorite for many. The bakery also serves up delectable shortbread yoyo biscuits that melt in your mouth without being overly sweet—truly divine!
Steak and mushroom pies were generously filled with ingredients. Shortbread biscuits were the best we’ve ever had. Lovely, friendly staff.

They advertised gluten free products, but when we got there they only had a couple of biscuits, and were told that u have to order in advance for bread and other items
Tania W — Google review
Very sad selection here. The pie I had tasted and looked old. The apple donut had like 2 pieces of apple in it. I had a savoury scone another time and it was really small, lacking in flavour and texture. Maybe I've been really unlucky but I haven't liked anything I've bought so far. Maybe I'm used to U Bakes generous bakes

As soon as I walked in, the atmosphere was dull and unfriendly, and this was reflected in the food. Sadly, I won't be going back.

Fast food restaurant
Hamburger restaurant
Burger King Timaru is a well-known fast-food chain offering a variety of grilled burgers, fries, and shakes. While the dining area may not always be spotless and there might be occasional spills on the floor, it's still a good spot to grab a quick bite. Despite some minor cleanliness issues and occasional disturbances from other patrons, it's still worth considering for a satisfying meal in Timaru.
Had a great experience! The customer service was fast and efficient, and the staff were all very friendly and welcoming. The store was clean and well-organized, which made the visit even more pleasant. I had a meal with my family and everything was awesome. A special shoutout to the Indian gentleman (sorry, I didn't catch his name) — he was incredibly supportive and patient, and we had a really nice chat. It's always great to come across people who genuinely care about customer service. Highly recommend this place!
Gorav 1 — Google review
The store is clean and tidy but it's not fast food. BK once had the policy to have orders out in 60 seconds. These days, we're lucky if it's inside of 15 minutes. We're even luckier if the large fries box comes with more fries than the average small.
John D — Google review
I am going to be very fair here. I do like Timaru Burger King* it is usually very good here. Sometimes they make the occasional average meal. Unfortunately today our burgers were very average, but in saying that out of the last 20 visits (est) this has been the first average meal.. next to no sauce on one burger & then way to much on the other lol, a little funny but hey the chips were hot & crisp as per usual so that is a bonus!
Tink F — Google review
Ordering system was very difficult to use, unsure what was ordered. No one at counter to ask. Food was cold and poorly presented. The tables were not cleaned and the restaurant was freezing cold. Toilets were dirty. Food would have been nice enough if it was hot. Very disappointing overall.

OMG best pie I have eaten this whole trip around the South Island! Highly recommended coming to U bake it was such a cute bakery with so much to choose from and 16 donuts for $16 is a dream if I say. Great place thanks guys for a wonderful breakfast😋will definitely be coming back here

This place we went pasted and had to do a u turn. Please stop and go here. I don't have the words to describe how delish it is.
Bridgit V — Google review
A good bakery overall, have been visiting for a good ten years now and have noticed prices increase alot and food quality decline, lack of variety in the cabinet food One thing i do like is they sell yesterdays food at half price which gives people options Hot cross buns are the best around but I don't think i will be getting them again as i bit into one yesterday and there was a stone in it, lucky not to break my teeth on it. Service has also declined since they started offering coffees, without a dedicated barrister as soon as someone orders a coffee the rest have to wait in line while the cashier makes a coffee for someone. Rather frustrating when you want a steam lined checkout experience. Pies are still worth going for.
Zack C — Google review
Best pies I’ve ever had. I’ve lived here my whole life and had a fair share of pies and these are hands down the best in the country. Absolutely packed fillings and amazing taste. The service was great and the price is so worth it, I went back later the same day to get another for lunch. Will be back again for sure
Lukas B — Google review
I come in monthly while travelling through, and I must say the inconsistent prices is enough for me to say no more. I enquired about the 3 dollar difference this time in the same order I usually get and the what appears to be a new young girl at the counter just smirked at me and kept pressing buttons on the till without an explanation! Very disappointing for what appears to be a very popular business. Pies and sausage rolls are top notch, just let down by poor service and pricing

Bakery
Coupland's Bakeries on Evans Street in Timaru is a haven for bread and pastry enthusiasts, as well as those with a sweet tooth. Their impressive array of donuts is particularly noteworthy, but be sure to arrive early to snag your favorites before they sell out! The bakery also offers affordable loaves of bread and packaged cookies that are perfect for any occasion.
This is da bomb for bread/pastry lovers like me! And also for all you sweet tooth out there. Their selection of donuts is amazing. However, you'd have to go early if not you'll only be left with a few miserable pieces towards closing. They sell packaged cookies and other pastries too, and their loaf of bread is really cheap at $2.20. Donuts are 6 for $12, or $2.50-$2.80 each.
Marklin A — Google review
Nice enough shop and staff, with dairy-grade pre-frozen pies. Not very tasty. You'd expect them to taste a bit better, being their in house brand - better pies to be had at any service station in NZ. They definitely make them elsewhere, freeze them and ship them out to be warmed up later. Not impressed..

I love coupland's bakeries and I really like to buy bread or even catering for their, however this morning i was calling to buy hot savouries and the one who talked to me on the phone was literally rude . She doesn't even know how to speak to a customer respectfully , even if that customer has different accent , and literally says on the phone OMG to the customer and took the order without asking about any details or what name is this order under! That was really disappointed and wasn't expecting at all to happen from our favorite bakery.
Nancy F — Google review
Went in with my grandson, 11, who bought lunch. Back in the car he showed me his change, and it was $1 short. I went back, and as soon as I told the staff member who had served my grandson, the till was opened and the dollar given back, no questions asked. I was wild , as this was the 3rd time in a couple of weeks that both grandsons had been short changed. ONLY the once at Couplands. Anyway, it's on a busy corner with traffic lights, so it's ok getting in and out. The food is pretty good and plentiful. The shop was clean and smelled divine.

Spotless, bright and we'll displayed as always. HOWEVER I'm always reminded of how much I dislike the new generic packaging/cours of savoury goods. Every pack looks the same. You have to search 👀for the ID Bacon&Egg, Steak Mince etc. Same with the Premium Range just a mass of colour on the package.

Food was good, my initial review today was too hasty. There was a long wait in order to pay, which was made more frustrating by the day I was having when I could see my pizza just sitting there. Highfield Takeaways in Timaru offers a variety of options to choose from, including home-made muesli and eggs benedict. The place has received mixed reviews in the past, with complaints about service and food quality. However, under new ownership, there have been significant improvements noted by customers. The crumbled fish is highly recommended, along with the Chinese dishes and regular fish and chips. Despite long wait times due to its popularity, the food is described as fresh and delicious.
Stopped for fish and chips, standard fish was beautiful with really crunchy and crispy batter that was light and golden. Manikin fries with just the right amount of salt and they had plenty of salt options! Hashbrown was a nice touch too, yum. Thanks!

Absolutely awfull. Sweet and sour pork wost I've ever had , so crunchy and yuk , took it back 2nd one was worse. , pork on inside yuk. Don't waste your time or money. Got shoestring chips too were burnt. Ended up eating the chips binned the sweet n sour. Terrible food.
Craig G — Google review
Absolutely disgusting. WILL NOT BE BACK . Food sat, uncooked , on the bench for 25 mins. Meanwhile burger was cooked and by the time I got it, it was COLD. Staff were unorganized, girl touching her hair, phone, till, money and pens, then the food. She also poked a piece of fish with a pen that could have been anywhere. Dropped a chicken nugget on the floor and used tongs that she was using for food, to pick it up. Just gross!
Kate K — Google review
Called ahead and ordered sweet n sour pork, fried rice, and beef chow mein - on the phone I asked for onions well done with no extra vegetables. When we took our order home they had instead added EXTRA EXTRA onion. The photos show how much onions we took out and how much was still left in the bowl, which was still a lot! Not very happy about that. This place does not do menu changes even if it’s a slight one at that.

Noodle Canteen offers a delightful dining experience with tasty food and friendly service that stands out in this quaint town. While the flavors are commendable, some diners feel that enjoying meals on proper plates with utensils would enhance the experience. The atmosphere could use some tidying up, as it tends to be a bit cluttered. Additionally, patrons have noted that wait times for food can be lengthy, possibly due to limited staff during their visit.

Got a combination meal abhout 8 months ago and it was absolutely amazing. Been there a few times in the last few months and the FOOD WAS TERRIBLE every time. Not sure if they have new owners or a new cook but it has gone downhill in a Major way. We kept going hoping it would go back to the amazing food but after a few months I was sadly dissapointed YET AGAIN!
Russ T — Google review
Food was good but it's much nicer to eat in a proper plate and proper utensils and the athmosphere is fair , too much clutter and food takes way too long maybe because when we went there there was only 1 cook

If you bother to go here your best just getting something unhealthy, deep fried, like the wontons or sweet sour pork or honey chicken. I thought I'd get a vege chicken noodle dish to have something with at least some veges... but what a joke. As per photo basically $20 for noodles with 0 flavour. I did find one piece of broccoli. Hotel is great, food is bad. Hotel - I stayed in a refurbished queen room - spacious and well decorated. Even had a couch. Everything was new. Only let down was the 'queen' bed was actually 2 singles pushed together. Was okay for the night but not overly comfortable. Given people mainly come to sleep I'd suggest getting an actual queen bed. Pub - worst fish and chips ive ever had. I believe the fish was frozen not fresh as advertised. It had a very fishy odor, was very dry and overcooked. Only had a few bites. Small handful of store-bought type crinkle cut fries. Salad was small but okay. Way overpriced at $36. I ordered fried chicken as was still hungry - also bad. It was mainly batter and very chewy pieces of chicken thigh. Checked out at 10 for breakfast but was told it goes from 7-9am so not able to eat. Really odd because check out then having breakfast seems quite normal to me. Also, please put a light in the smoking area, its actually quite scary being out there without one given you're caged in. Friendly staff and plenty of parking across from hotel for guests. I would stay at the hotel again but would not eat there, plenty of other food options around.

A cute little window seat where you can see the part of the port, an open wardrobe, a couple of single chairs with a full view mirror on the wall, a simple Fridge and jug were set up on and under a table with the TV hung on the wall above. Bathroom spacious as well, shower pressure was good, and had a led mirror which was neat, however the sink was having issues it had a black button thing, which I suppose the purpose of it, was to put plug in to fill up the sink or to open to let the water out. How ever something must of jammed cause it took all night for the water to drain. They had an old school elevator where you had to close 2doors, didn't try it out though.

My parents recently stayed two nights at The Grosvenor in Timaru during their vacation and had a truly wonderful experience. Thy at the front desk was absolutely exceptional, warm, kind, and incredibly professional. She went above and beyond to arrange a beautiful room for them and made sure every detail of their stay was comfortable and enjoyable. She’s personable, attentive, and genuinely cares about guests, ensuring they feel welcomed and well looked after. Thank you, Thy, for taking such lovely care of them and making their stay so pleasant. We highly recommend The Grosvenor for excellent hospitality!

Great value. Great location. Old but grand and very nicely renovated. Noise can be a bit of an issue between rooms and people in hallways etc.

It is a wonderful place to stay. The staff are very helpful. If you are in a wheelchair it is very difficult acess. You can't go in the front door. The side acess is very steep and if there is a conference on you cannot get thru. Please please look at getting a ramp for the main entrance.

Replenish Cafe in Timaru is a delightful spot that truly embodies the essence of healthy eating. Nestled on Stafford Street, this charming cafe offers an impressive array of vegetarian and vegan dishes, all crafted with locally sourced ingredients. Their menu features creative options like the Super Breakfast Bowl, which combines smooth red lentil puree with fresh toppings and housemade dukkah, served alongside gluten-free pita bread.
One of the best cafe's we've been to with gluten free options. We had The replenish works for breakfast with gluten free toast. Done perfectly and tasted great. Couldn't resist leaving without some gluten free cake for later 😋

Not good for parents/kids & not good for coffee. Coffee was horrible, and they don’t know the difference of their coffee types and need a proper trained barista rather. Also definitely not kid friendly as we were asked to move our kids form a table even though they were buying food and drinks. Advice to the owners: put up a sign saying no kids instead of making parents feel awkward and unwelcomed.

Sooooo yummy🤤🤤 Smashed avocado with poached egg was so delicious. They are definitely not greedy and it was full of good stuff. Just enough size of 1 slice wholegrain bread, 2 eggs and 1 full avocado with nice cheese. They were all so tasty. Also had black coffee which was great. And of course, ladies were so fiendly. Loved their chat.

Cactus Fire in Timaru is a cozy haven offering a full flavor sensation with friendly staff, excellent food, and a funky atmosphere. The dishes are praised for their fresh and crisp ingredients, arriving promptly after ordering. Visitors have enjoyed the beautiful Mexican flavors of stuffed peppers, lamb tacos, pork belly tacos, and polenta fries. The restaurant also offers lovely views over Caroline Bay.
Mexican Flavor Festival! If you're looking for a full flavor sensation meal, then you need to visit Cactus Fire in Timaru. Our family of 3 had dinner here on a Saturday evening, around 5.45pm. This cozy little haven has a lot to offer, with friendly staff, excellent food, fabulous coffee, and a funky atmosphere. We ordered a variety of dishes and I couldn't fault any of them! The flavors were full, the ingredients were fresh and crisp. Our first food items arrived within 10-minutes of ordering - Fantastic! What we ordered: Jamaican Pork & Pineapple taco, Mango Prawns taco, pulled pork empanadas, jalapeños poppers, honey glazed cauliflower, cheeseburger rolls, and poutine with pulled pork. We all LOVED the tacos, and the cauliflower. Top individual favorites: 10-year old - Cheeseburger Rolls, Husband - Poutine, Mum (Me) - Jalapeño poppers (& cauliflower!). Make sure you try some complimentary hot sauces. Drinks - I ordered an iced oat milk latte (not on the menu), I'm extremely fussy with my coffee quality, and this was DELICIOUS! Smooth and creamy. Hubby ordered a Bourbon Peach Tea & raved about how great it was. Top tip - This is a very popular little establishment! Book, and do an early dinner! It was filled to the brim half-an hour after we arrived. We packed up some food to take home, and were keen to order dessert to try. But sat waiting for almost 20 minutes and no one came to take our dessert order because they were so busy (this is not a critique, the staff were doing their best!). We loved all the funky art work in the restaurant and the staff were lovely, helpful, and engaging in conversations. We'll definitely return again on any future stops in Timaru and highly recommend this fabulous eatery to friends and family. **In photo of food from top left: jalapeño poppers, cheeseburger rolls, poutine (center), cauliflower, and empanadas.**

Two individuals had an early meal at Naruwan Taiwanese Restaurant, a unique dining spot in New Zealand. Offering a menu distinct from the usual fare, it showcased Szechwan flavors rather than traditional Cantonese cuisine. The restaurant itself was notable for its expansive size, pleasant ambiance, and tasteful decor. Their appetizing selections included hot and sour soup, steamed buns, steamed lemon fish fillet, and spicy stir-fried beans.
We had Taiwanese BBQ Sauce with Prawns, Squids & Vegetables, and crispy duck. The food was so delicious. Friendly customer service, food presentation is good . The restaurant is a nicely designed, good foodie atmosphere 😋. It is located in a good place ,recommend

The lights were dimed an the themed decor thoughtout is really pretty makes this restaurant almost romantic... 😉 The meal I had was really nice, spicy 😊
Jodi H — Google review
Two of us enjoyed an early dinner at the Naruwan. It is billed as a Taiwanese Restaurant and the menu is different from what we usually see in New Zealand. It is similar to Szechwan, not the usual Cantonese. The restaurant was very large, comfortable, and well decorated. We enjoyed hot and sour soup, steamed buns, steamed lemon fish fillet, and stir fried beans with chili. There was lots of chili, but we like things spicy. We thought the food and service was excellent and we will certainly return when we have the opportunity. We learned that the restaurant has recently been listed for sale so it is reasonable to expect there will be changes. Note that the restaurant is closed on Mondays and Sunday evenings and closed between 2 and 5 pm.

Their delicious menu includes succulent Lambs Fry and bacon, which can be enjoyed alongside a refreshing ginger beer. Additionally, they have a Pensioners meal option available at an affordable price of $13.50, featuring either Rump steak or Ribs for just $15. With top-notch service and mouthwatering dishes, Armadillo's Timaru guarantees a memorable dining experience.
A large group of us came in for dinner and have to say the service was amazing! Food was cooked fast, and it was a nice low key family friendly place to have a catchup.

I had a family dinner there, and my family was satisfied with their food. However, my ribs were just okay; the pork ribs didn't have much meat on them, which was a bit disappointing.

Party of four for dinner, not booked but assured no problem, sit wherever we wished . Service was exceptionally slow but we made allowances for the single waitress covering the bar and taking orders . However at least 45 minutes after placing order & no sign of food or staff I went beyond the staff only section & spoke to the chef directly. He explained they had a large group in another room before us - had we known we could have made other arrangements. Food was adequate when finally received.
Alan T — Google review
The young lady waitress, bar maid, front of house Savanah was a little worker! We had to wait a lot for her to serve others but we had time. She managed to do everything we asked for service but she was only one person. I went to find her mid meal but couldn't find a soul. Not even the chef. However the 3 rating was for average food and environment. It was warm but the kids playroom was cold. An ok experience but could do better. 5/5 for Savanah, she deserves top wage for her efforts, and her smile.

Had the chicken snitzel $20 special was very nice and value for money, but the drinks let you down. I spoke to the waitress as 2 x handles of raspberry cokes we're flat like no bubbles at all flat, apparently it's been like that for 2 weeks but yet I was still being charged $14 for 2. Not impressed will be lucky to get me back

Private function 50pax, so correct smount of staff should’ve been rostered on for it. Being in hospo industry I understand food will take time but kids should be fed first before adults we order at 7pm and my 4 y/o only getting her nuggets and chips at 8.30pm! Food was warm but after waiting that long and paying $45 for a set menu I would’ve eaten anything. Highly don’t recommend at all.

Unfortunately had a bad experience here. I had ribs that had next to no meat on them, our table didn’t get cleared before we had desert which meant we had to wait and also help clear the table. We had to talk to the manager in charge due to the kitchen blasting their un-restaurant worthy music out loud in which the whole restaurant could hear it clearly, including our 5 year old. Yes I got a video as proof and manager apologised but still wasn’t happy with this experience overall. Definitely won’t be back again.

Takeout Restaurant
I accompanied two elderly acquaintances to Cappadocia Turkish Kitchen, a popular restaurant for takeaways. We all relished the flavorful Lamb and Chicken Kebabs served on a bed of rice. The service was amiable, and although we found the dining area pleasant, it appeared that most patrons between 6-6:50pm preferred takeout. Unfortunately, the Baklava was unavailable on our visit, but perhaps we'll have better luck next time.
Great wee place on the corner, good fresh food, friendly service, easy to get a park, I love the mixed grill and their chips and gravy with cheese 🧀. My go to place when I am in town. Picture of mixed grill 🤤

Quaint little kebab spot in Timaru that really surprised us! We had the kebab on rice with mixed meat — the chicken was good, but the lamb was absolutely delicious. So good we had to grab a lamb kebab to takeaway! Friendly service and generous portions too. Definitely worth a stop if you’re in town.

I took 2 of my elderly friends to this restaurant Wednesday evening. We all enjoyed our meal: Lamb Kebabs on rice and Chicken Kebabs on rice. Very tasty and friendly service. Although they have a quite pleasant space for dining, all the people who came in that night between 6-6:50pm were for takeaways. It seemed a very popular place for takeaways. I wanted to try their Baklava but there was none available. Maybe next time. :)

The food was average. We felt the rice was very mushy and all the other small additions such as couscous and hummus was a bit average too. Chilli and garlic sauce was really good. However, the service was really excellent, and food was prepared quickly. Very cute place too.. fees like I am in turkey! There is no free parking, but paid street parking on the side street.. cheap parking.

$19 doner kebab, it was wrapped in a “supermarket” wrap, probably from the on special bin. Meat was was hidden in the thin tasteless wrap, the rice salad did a great job of hiding it, then again you could hide the Americas top ten most wanted in that rice salad. Service was good, was honest and open about a 10 to 15 minute wait for fresh chicken to be cooked, which was fine and actually appreciated the honesty.

We had lamb kebab on rice, mix grilled meat and chicken salad. All dishes were all yummy meat was tinder, salads were fresh, even my 2 aged parents enjoyed them very much! The lady even gave us fries on the house due to the long wait which wasn’t really long. And the fries were so delicious!!

Takeout Restaurant
The quality of the food at Le Cren St Takeaways has declined in terms of portion size. The scallops were overcooked and the other fish options were expensive considering their small portions. However, the fish of the day, specifically elephant fish, was enjoyable. Despite these drawbacks, many customers find the fish and chips to be excellent and are happy to return to this takeout restaurant when in Timaru.
Good fresh food. Chips are thick cut, 👍 Fair prices, not cheap, not expensive, Fair. $19.20 resulted in enough for three adults of normal appetite.

I appreciate their patience in explaining what flour and oil were used in gluten-free menu via a call. I don’t mean to be rude and I hope this doesn’t dishearten them, but I strongly believed this can be taken as a feedback to improve. To be honest, this is by far the worst gluten-free fish & chips I’ve ever had in NZ. Overall it tasted like some overnight or straight out of freezer. The chips were inconsistent and oily, the fish was incredibly hard and bland. Usually other fish & chips my fork couldn’t hold the fish because it’s crispy outside but soft inside. For this, i can easily just ‘carry’ the fish with my fork and even swing it no joke. It was just........hard. I couldn’t finish it. I’m not sure what went wrong in their recipe or method but I think maybe they should go out and try other stalls to get some references? I’ve the best gf fish & chips at Queenstown - Erik’s fish & chip and they are coeliac friendly. Hope this can bring some improvement for your GF menu. All the best! 🙏🏻

The Thai restaurant, Organic Thai2Go Timaru, offers delicious cuisine. However, some customers may find that the spiciness level doesn't meet their expectations. For those who prefer milder flavors when indulging in Indian food, they might anticipate a moderate heat from the Thai dishes. Unfortunately, the food at this establishment lacks the desired spice. Despite this drawback, many patrons still plan to return and give it another try.
got the vegan pad Thai and vegan peanut satay stirfry - great serving sizes, quick seamless free delivery, compostable packaging, SUPER tasty! highly recommend - a little pricy but definitely worth it!
Jorgii C — Google review
Average at best. Lifeless and bland, no depth of flavour. The spice level is arbitrary, the sweet chili dipping sauce was hotter than the hot option. Cabbage, carrot, cauliflower and your choice of meat/noodle in some kind of disappointing sauce is basically the whole menu. The beef salad (pictured) was so far from the description and picture. Don't waste your time and money, far better Thai options in Timaru.
Cameron J — Google review
Good food but the level of heat didn't match my expectations. I'm usually a mild person if I'm getting Indian so expected medium from Thai to be some decent heat but didn't taste like any spice. Would still get again and try hot as the food overall was good

Delivery time given was 30 min. Actual time was 70 min. Get this sorted guys. We nearly cancelled. Also when you started we recall food quality and taste was excellent. However this seems to have slipped with dishes tasting the same. Stick with the quality or we will go elsewhere

I have been a great fan of Thai2Go since it opened and really appreciate the quality of the food but tonight's order of the Massaman Lamb Shank curry was such a disappointment. The driest lamb I have ever tasted, not easy to do as a takeaway but this was horrendous. Also I asked for medium heat I.e amount of chilli, sadly not a chilli to be had. I will go back because all other dishes i have had have been good but maybe take the lamb off the.menu.

Marchwiel Takeaways is a beloved gem nestled in the heart of Timaru, New Zealand, renowned for its exceptional fish and chips. Locals rave about the thick, fresh fish that’s perfectly cooked and well-drained, alongside crispy chips that evoke nostalgic memories. This spot has been a favorite for years, offering generous portions of delicious seafood and hot dogs. Great quality, clean, fresh feed of fish n chips! This place is what makes NZ fish n chips great! Thick fish that is fresh and well drained. Proper sausages. Well cooked and well drained chips. Hassall Street Takeaways is an excellent eatery that offers quick and satisfying meals. The shop has received a rating of four stars, with burgers being their specialty. Customers can choose from a variety of burger options priced between $5 and $9, although some may find the toppings to be limited to just patty sauce and lettuce. However, the kid's meals are a hit among children, especially the fish bites and chips. The restaurant caters to families and provides diverse beverage choices.
Absolutely reliably good, awesome corn parties (please do not change the recipe), hamburgers are great, everything is as good as you can get, including the phone ordering process, and estimate of time to complete your order.

Very very grumpy women behind the counter. Charges $4.00 for a fish that is tiny as hell $4.00 for a scoop of chips that were over cooked and tasted burnt. Has to be in my opinion the worst fish and chips in timaru. Her meat patties tasted the worst oh my God don't waste your money seriously. There are other better fish and chips in timaru. She needs to pick up her game and be polite to more people and for God sake change your oil or very soon she will be out of business.
