Hokusai Museum

Art museum
The Hokusai Museum is a charming attraction located in a quiet town, making it an ideal spot for art enthusiasts or those seeking a break from the usual tourist destinations. The museum showcases an array of stunning paintings and wood-block prints by the renowned ukiyo-e artist Katsushika Hokusai.
Beautiful and awesome comes to mind. The reproduction is impeccably done. The originals are superb and we were lucky to see some of those exhibited here. Enough said. Do come and be amazed.
Teresa Y — Google review
Beautiful little museum about Hokusai, which focuses on his earlier manga style work, and a few major pieces from his time in Obuse, mainly the festival carriages. Unfortunately, not many of his most well known work, just one or two. A shame since we came from Nagano just for that. Still a beautiful little museum in a beautiful little town.
Olivier G — Google review
Should a museum be called the “Hokusai Museum “ and only have one or two minor works by the artist displayed? There were works by other artists displayed, a couple of minor Hokusai works, and two 15 minute videos about Hokusai. I was disappointed to say the least especially when you consider that Hokusai is said to have created over 30,000 works over his lifetime. If you plan to visit, make sure to check the website beforehand so you are aware of what’s available. For a much better experience, I recommend the Hokusai museum in Asakusa, Tokyo. On a positive note, the restroom was clean and the air conditioning was a welcome relief from the hot summer weather.
Harry — Google review
Absolutely wonderful and I learned so much about the painting style of Edo period and appreciated many artists. It is a great place and their children room is a big homage to Master Hokusai
Filippo C — Google review
I liked the place but even more the devotion of the artist a lot. The two videos with information about the artist and his art (15 minutes each, English subtitles) are very interesting. An artist with his peak at 70+ years is just amazing. The art itself is also really lovely and getting more and more colorful. Being in Obuse definitely worth going to this museum.
Frank T — Google review
Very nicely done museum. Excellent intro videos. Some of the interpretive signs include English translations, but many don’t. Use Google lens! If you’re a fan of Hokusai, You’ll need a few hours to take it all in. Lots of neat shops and restaurants in the area. Well worth the stop.
Ryan — Google review
Great exhibit but not a lot of Hokusai works. They where having a special exhibit for 19th-century Japanese artist. Their works are similar. His work was on loan. His panel art on a temple carrying thing? Was worth the time. I loved the gift shop. They had one-of-a-kind stuff with his art.
Ben H — Google review
Nice curated museum. With the exposition of Hokusai works and his influence on world art. The museum has a gift shop and kids playroom. The two documentaries with English subtitles will help you understand who the "mad painter" is and why he is so important for Japanese culture. Recommended for visiting.

Obusedo

Mentioned on

Japanese confectionery shop
Cafe
Obusedo is a sophisticated Japanese restaurant in Obuse that offers modern flavors using seasonal vegetables. The dining experience can be enjoyed as a bento style meal or as a course, with the same content and price. Customers have praised the prompt service and delicious food, particularly highlighting the chestnut dessert. The restaurant's reasonable prices and traditional Japanese buildings make it a nice place to stop for a break while exploring the quiet town of Obuse.
What a lunch at 小布施堂! The price is very reasonable, and the selling point is the 'chestnut'. Honestly, the dessert overwhelmingly outpaced the other courses, although they were also excellent. 😅😅😅😅😅😅
Wilbur L — Google review
We stopped by Obuse for a short trip and found this restaurant. We had a set meal here and everything was wonderful! We were one of the few customers and Wa served promptly. Food was so good we ordered a second set.
Miss P — Google review
Had the chestnut and the strawberry shaved ice. Was nice, but people kept looking at me and my wife because, I think, we were a mixed couple. Also, service acted like this too. Other than that, amazing shaved ice.
Little F — Google review
Had a rich chestnut experience here xxx If you love chestnuts this is the place to come. I reserved the special lunch course which was very fulfilling, and seats were well social distanced. Just one note, the 朱雀Suzaku (100% chestnut) was a little to big of a proportion for one person (in my opinion)...! I was already a satisfied with half the size!! P.s. people sitting next to us brought some container themselves and were taking the Suzaku home ! Haha I mean that’s how big it is. But unfortunately they don’t have any more this year... you can try next year if you’re interested!
M K — Google review
You can enjoy very sophisticated Japanese food at this restaurant. Using seasonal vegetables, the cooking method is great, and the flavour is very modern. If you want to eat early, I think it's a bento style, and if you have time, you should make it a course. The food content and price are the same.
Sato H — Google review
A very famous for chestnut. Very delicious. Have never seen so many cookies with chestnut 🌰 butter
Viki K — Google review
Was here for a chestnut lunch course but apparently February was not the season so they don’t serve that when we visited. However they do gave us a chestnut dessert for free after we lunch there. Worth the visit
Ando K — Google review
Nice place to stop to have a break. The sweets (chestnut chou cream) was nice and not too expensive. The menu is not in English but there are pictures.

Gansho-in

Mentioned on
2 lists
Buddhist temple
Sights & Landmarks
Gansho-in is a popular temple located about two kilometers away from the Hokusai Museum, towards Mount Karita. Visitors can enjoy a scenic walk or hire a bicycle to reach the temple in 15 minutes. The main sanctuary of Gansho-in houses an original Hokusai painting on its ceiling, featuring a famed 1848 mythical bird. The temple staff are known for their friendliness and hospitality, providing Japanese explanations of the temple's history and Hokusai's painting.
The most impressive temple artwork I've ever seen in Japan. The Phoenix is stunning and the guides are very gracious with English translations of their explanations of the painting. There is a lot more to see besides the ceiling painting itself. Beautiful woodwork and a small museum like area showing the pigments and dyes used as well as other statues and artifacts. No photos allowed so be sure to pick up a postcard to remember the Phoenix gazing at you!
Brian R — Google review
Absolutely fantastic to see Hokusai's phoenix in it's original setting. It only takes half an hour to walk from the Hokusai museum and is well worth it. No pictures are allowed inside the shrine so this has to be seen with your own eyes.
James H — Google review
Located in Obuse, its a shrine that's not as well-known but definitely worth the visit if you are driving as its slightly out of the way. The temple houses a masterpiece by Hokusai, the master Japan artist (the same master that painter that created the The Great Wave off Kanagawa). You can't take photos inside the temple but there will be guide that will breakdown the amazing aspects of the art for you; if you view the painting mounted on the roof for example, the outline pigments change from black to sliver! Behind the main hall you can find a Frog-Fighting Pond and the frogs are SO CUTE (as shown). Please visit and experience the beauty and cute frogs!
James A — Google review
The people running Gansho-in are some of the friendliest I've ever talked with in Japan. They're just lovely. The main thing people come to see is the giant phoenix painted by Hakusai, but they actually have some other neat artifacts as well dating back to the Sengoku period. I love the place and would like to come back again some time.
Bill K — Google review
Came to check out the gigantic hokusai phoenix on the ceiling. It was incredible.
David T — Google review
Amazing stuffs explaining interesting stories; how Hokusai painted the phoenix, life of Hokusai, characteristic of the pigment (it looks different colors according to the direction!!), Masanori Fukushima’s story(and Kuroda-bushi, well known as a drinking song…^^), … I was very lucky that I could enjoy the best season for Iris Japonica…
Kentaro K — Google review
Amazing visit, it’s a really small temple but really worth it for the Hokusai painting. He painted it at 90 years old just before he passed away. The colors of the Phoenix are beautiful and untouched since the original painting. Worth to mention that everything is explained in English m. No pictures allowed.
Urbain E — Google review
The Hokusai phoenix is stunning and it's amazing that it's the original with no restoration, but the ticket price is really steep

Chikufūdō; Obuse Main Store

Japanese confectionery shop
Chikufūdō; Obuse Main Store is a renowned restaurant and confectionery shop known for its traditional chestnut rice, ice cream, cookies, and other delicacies. The establishment offers pre-boxed Japanese treats like wafer-shaped chestnuts filled with chestnut paste. Upstairs, there's a restaurant serving delicious and affordable Japanese cuisine. The limited menu includes sets featuring the famous chestnut rice along with savory sides or fish options.
The service is great! And the food is delicious and healthy! Great atmosphere ! Our first time having chestnut rice!
Keller Y — Google review
This shop specializes in chestnut-themed dishes and desserts. I had the Chestnut rice and a dessert comprising a chestnut cream with crispy rice mochi. The restaurant is above the confectionary which sells a broad range of chestnut-based sweets and desserts available for purchase.
Katong K — Google review
We went there over the extended weekend. The place was very crowded. We plan to have lunch and waiting time was about 25 minutes. The food is great. Very reasonably priced and as is usually the case, the staff is nice. We ordered the usual set lunch and also a desert dish which was also very good. The Shop cum restaurant is at the corner so has a good view as well. You can try them if you are around.
Samarth R — Google review
We had the vegetable lunch set which came with its famous chestnut rice and it did not disappoint. The chestnuts shaved ice was also very nice on a warm summer day. A little on the pricey side but worth a try when in Obuse.
Eugene T — Google review
Excellent chestnut rice. Flavor was wonderful. The sides in the set were all tasty and interesting. They have a limited menu. You can get a set of chestnut rice with or without a fish and not much else in terms of savory food. They do have some dessert and tea sets which are nice if a little pricey. Around lunch time expect to wait for a table. It goes relatively quickly though.
Sara K — Google review
Everything seems to be a little too sweet for dessert menus. But we can feel the real chestnut in there. Good service also.
JR V — Google review
Good selection of seasonal and chestnut sweets and snacks. Easy access to the carpark right next to the shop.
Aaron K — Google review
I've been here many times and the chestnut rice and ayu fish are always delicious. I also enjoy the mountain vegetables and mushrooms. Today we also tried an apple sorbet which was lovely.

Masuichi-Ichimura Sake Brewery

Mentioned on
+1 other list
Sake brewery
Masuichi-Ichimura Sake Brewery is a renowned brewery in Obuse with deep roots in the area. They offer tasting sets for purchase and accept credit cards. The sake, although on the expensive side, is sold in smaller 500mL bottles. The traditional brewing methods result in delicious tasting sake, especially the junmaidaiginjo variety. Visitors can enjoy a bar to taste different sakes and have the option of purchasing fancy packaged sakes as gifts.
It was a wonderful place to taste sake, we were the only customers here at that time. This place produces sake brewed in wooden vats that is unavailable at ordinary retail shops. The brewery's numerous brands are available for drinking at a bar counter. Sake tasting is quite cheap for a 60ml shot, around ¥200-350 for each shot depending on the quality of the sake chosen. There are some special ones like the cloudy and certain sake that can only be drunk at that temperature, so you can’t buy it back home. Our favourite is the Hekiiken which we bought back.
Donovan L — Google review
They have a bar where you can pay 200-300 yen to taste some of the different sake they offer.
Max K — Google review
We thought there is something to see about the process of production. This is only a shop with tasting place and two barrels standing around. When we entered also no one suggested us something, so we left
Nadiya T — Google review
7 or 8 different sales available for tasting, but unfortunately no tours of the brewing process. The staff however were happy to answer questions and talk us through the differences in brewing and how that impacts the final flavour.
Scott P — Google review
Excellent Sake. Bought several Bottles. Shu was by far my favorite. Relaxing back home in TX with a glass.
Sean H — Google review
Not matched made in heaven ...
Jeffrie T — Google review
Amazing sake and pretty cheap to just sample a bunch of them

Nestled in the heart of Obuse, Sakurai Kanseido Main Store is a treasure trove for chestnut enthusiasts. Established in 1808, this historic sweets shop has been delighting customers with its high-quality confections made from pure chestnuts, ensuring a rich and natural flavor without any additives.
Come here for all things chestnut! Chestnut paste, chestnut pastries, chestnut pies, etc. Everything we bought was very delicious. The packaging is very fancy too.
Deyan D — Google review
A long-established Japanese confectionery specialty store located in Obuse, a famous chestnut producing area. Chestnut Yokan and Chestnut Shikanoko have long been familiar souvenirs. You can buy them at major department stores, but a visit to the main store will give you a taste of the passion that has gone into making these confections.

(Translated by Google) I've received Sakurai Kanseido's chestnut yokan as a gift several times, but this was my first time visiting the store. The store is very spacious, and the sign on the right side of the entrance clearly conveys the store's passion for chestnuts, or rather, Sakurai Kanseido's commitment to chestnuts, as seen in the accompanying text: "As long as the chestnuts are fresh, that's all that matters." Today, I bought chestnut yokan and chestnut dorayaki. The chestnut yokan had just the right amount of sweetness, making the most of the chestnut flavor. I think it's the perfect sweet treat for tea. The chestnut dorayaki had a very moist crust, and the bean paste, while I imagined it would be azuki bean-like in color, was a slightly greenish color, making it another elegant treat that brought out the chestnut flavor. There's plenty of parking nearby, so it's easy to get there by car. Their autumn rakugan (rakugan) are delicious, of course, but they also have cute chestnut-shaped monaka (sweet chestnut wafers) with a rich, delicious chestnut filling. Their top recommendation is the new chestnut tea-cloth squeezed into a smooth, squeezed-out chestnut, which is only available during the limited time the chestnuts are in season! This product is made by squeezing the smooth chestnuts, and it has none of the alcoholic flavor of chestnut kinton (sweet chestnut paste). It's so delicious, it tastes like you're eating the smooth chestnut itself. It has a three-day shelf life and must be refrigerated, so it can't be purchased online or in other stores. A box of five goes for just over 1,500 yen. They don't make a lot, and they're sold out when they're gone, so when I arrive in Obuse, I always bring an insulated bag and head there first to buy some. It also makes a great souvenir! Roasted chestnuts are sold very cheaply in front of the shop. From the parking lot, I walked down a side street that ran past the factory, and emerged onto the road. After crossing the traffic light, I found the Obuse main store. There was a parking lot in front of the store that could accommodate several cars. The building had a timeless feel, befitting a long-established Japanese confectionery shop. The interior of the store had a calming atmosphere, complete with a rest area. This time, I purchased chestnut dorayaki, chestnut yokan, and chestnut leaf pie. I'm looking forward to eating them. History Museums
The Kozan Takai Memorial Museum, located near the Hokusai Museum, offers a glimpse into the works of Takai Kozan and the historical Yuzenro building. Visitors can explore Kozan's artwork and learn about the gatherings of literati and artists like Gyosai and Shozan at this cultural site. It's a fascinating place to delve into history while appreciating art.
Stillness fills the air with creativity. I loved this place. While wandering around the local area l came across the museum. It's absolutely beautiful, l was the only person visiting so had the place to myself. I really enjoyed exploring the house and felt at ease. There is a musical instrument that you can kneel down and play. (l tried to find out what it's called.) I sat in the ground enjoying the silence and the nature of the museum. It's full of history and well worth a visit. Has limited parking, toilet and a shop, also free tea you can sit and take in the atmosphere. We'll worth a visit. I wasn't allowed to take photos, so will post some of the local surroundings so you get the feel of the atmosphere of the area thus building quietly sits. Ps... There are lots of local gardens open to the public.

I hesitated at first to pay the 300 yen admission, but it was well worth it. This is a small part of the family estate of the man who was Hokusai's patron and an accomplished artist in his own right. The grounds are small but well-kept, the small collection of artwork is interesting, and the building that served as his study is wonderful to explore. Doesn't take a whole lot of time either, so convenient to fit into a visit to Obuse.

(Translated by Google) This museum occupies the former residence of Takai Kozan, head of the Takai family, who was born and raised in Obuse during the late Edo period. He studied academics and art in Kyoto and Edo. He is known for his connections with thinkers like Sakuma Shozan during the late Edo period, his wealth as a wealthy farmer-merchant providing relief to the poor, his cultural activism led to the invitation of his friend Katsushika Hokusai to Obuse, and his dedication to education during the Meiji Restoration. Visitors can see the remains of the residence visited by late Edo period patriots and Hokusai, the library displaying Kozan's calligraphy and paintings, and the storehouse that housed the Kamimachi festival float known for Hokusai's "Raging Waves" (currently on display at the Hokusai Museum). The exhibition "Kozan's Monsters, Flowers, Birds, and Plants" is running in the storehouse and grain storehouse until Wednesday, November 12th. The flower, bird, and plant paintings that Kozan studied under Hokusai are realistic and vibrant. The yokai drawings he continued to paint in his later years were fascinating, featuring unique yokai that seem to have possessed nature or objects. About a 10-minute walk from Obuse Station on the Nagano Electric Railway. Open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Closed during the New Year holidays and when other exhibits are being changed. Admission is 300 yen for adults. An event called "Kōzan's Yokai Night" will be held on Saturday, September 6, 2025. Takai Kōzan Memorial Museum, Hokusai Museum, and Japanese Light Museum will be open free of charge at night. Visitors can enjoy food stalls selling shaved ice and other items, as well as a yokai contest (makeup and costume contest).

(Translated by Google) My third visit on July 19th, the first day of a three-day weekend. I arrived more than an hour before opening time, so I called to ask for a numbered ticket, which I'd found on an online search. They told me they didn't offer this service. I also asked if they'd accept me so I could walk around the area while I waited, but they were blunt and said, "Just wait around!" My meal was the "Samadhi Soba" for 1,500 yen. First, I got the 100% fresh flour soba, followed by a special soba noodle with ginger, and finally the coarsely ground soba (nihachi). The soba noodles were still five stars. The timing of serving the second and third soba noodles was also excellent (incidentally, some reviews say the male staff were telling customers to hurry up, but this isn't the case). The soup is slightly sweet, which is sure to appeal to female customers. You can tell the quality of the soba soup by diluting it with some soba soup. I've heard (though I'm not sure now) that the brown soba noodles used at Sekizawa are harvested and sun-dried by the owner, who is originally from Sakae Village, and closes the shop from the end of September to October. It's no exaggeration to say that the quality of soba noodles is determined by the buckwheat flour, and when combined with the skill of making them, they produce the ultimate soba. That's why it's such a shame that the soba's reputation is lowered by the consideration and attitude of the staff. The success or failure of a restaurant depends on its overall strength, including its service. I hope that the owner will make improvements under his guidance, so I've given it 4 stars with high hopes. Restaurant owners and staff alike, please take a look at this post. (Translated by Google) It's a tourist-friendly restaurant that locals don't frequent. It's been years since I last ate there, but judging by the reviews, it seems exactly the same as it was back then. Naturally, the management is the same, so the basic customer service approach won't change, so I thought I'd write about it now. Simply put, locals don't go there because it's poor value for money. I don't deny the taste of the soba itself, but it's no exaggeration to say it tastes like anything else. Basically, it's average. And that's the price and portion size. It's poor value for money. On top of that, even if I wrote in detail about the customer service approach, if I posted it on Tabelog, it would be unreasonably deleted. I can't remember whether it was before or after business hours, but the front door opened, so I called out to ask a question. There was someone in the kitchen, but they didn't bother to respond and remained silent. Even if they were busy preparing or cleaning up, they would probably respond if it was a neighbor or a delivery, but since it was a customer calling out, it probably wasn't a big deal, so they ignored them. Honestly, I have a similar personality, so I understand, but even so, it doesn't work in the customer service industry. He's probably a chef (manager), but he's decided he doesn't want to be involved in customer service. That arrogant attitude is clear when you read the other reviews with low scores. And yet the soba is just your average tasting, and the portions are small, making it a poor value for the money. That's why locals don't go. Of course, there's a reason why you can't eat it right away. As others have written, the people who are giving it a high rating say it's not about the soba. I'm talking about other dishes, like the side dishes. If you're looking for soba, a perfect score is out of the question. I'll say it again and again. The soba tastes average. The portions are small. They completely ignore the customers. That's why I give it one star. I still went there twice, with my family and guests. Of course, the guests were completely unimpressed with the service that led to the low rating, but they weren't impressed at all. Just average, after all. If you're treated to delicious food, you'd normally think they'd act pleased, but that didn't seem to happen at all. That's what I'm saying. Soba lovers looking for the taste of soba here will not be impressed. The portions were small, but the water was delicious, bringing out the flavor of the soba. Even though the cost performance was a little low, the overall soba was good and well-balanced. Water is important! This was my second visit on November 1, 2024. I arrived five minutes before opening, and since it was a weekday, the parking lot was about half empty. I waited two or three minutes on the veranda, but I was shown to my seat right away. I ordered the same cold coarsely ground soba noodles as two years ago, with a special soba noodle dish and warm duck and scallions at the end. Since it was early in the morning and I was pretty hungry, I also ordered the cold coarsely ground soba noodles separately. Soon, the coarsely ground soba was served, cut into thin strips, and was sweet and very easy to eat, even more delicious than last time. The second soba was made with sesame seeds, which were very finely ground and contained black sesame seeds, creating a wonderful balance that didn't overpower the flavor of the soba. Finally, we had warm soba noodles with duck and leeks, which paired well with the well-prepared duck, and were also excellent. We finished off with a single order of coarsely ground soba noodles. This time, we had three servings of cold dishes, and while the soba itself was delicious, they all had a slight hint of boiled and cooled water remaining, and when I dipped half in the rainy season soba and swallowed the other half as is, I could taste the cooling water, which was very sweet and delicious. Essentially, my favorite drink (food) is water, and I've been a fan of handmade soba noodles for a long time, but this was my first experience with soba noodles that I could really taste the deliciousness of the water going down my throat. I should add that it's not that the water wasn't drained badly. Delicious water, delicious soba! I visited this restaurant for lunch with the president of the new factory on October 30, 2022, the first day of the new soba season. I've actually been longing to try this place for over 20 years, and never thought I'd get this chance. It was the first Sunday after a long closure due to the fall harvest, so I was the first one there, just over an hour before opening. Time passed. As soon as the restaurant opened, I waited 10-15 minutes thanks to the efficient service and customer service. I ordered a hot (haru) soba noodle. It was a set of two cold soba noodles: coarsely ground, special soba noodles, and one hot soba noodle. Unfortunately, photography is prohibited inside the restaurant, so I can't show you the inside, but I can only describe it as, well, delicious. The coarsely ground soba noodles were sweet even without the sauce! I've eaten at many famous restaurants across the country, but I've never experienced anything as sweet as this. The water must be delicious, too, since all the water is used in the soba. Even with the spicy sauce, the soba was even sweeter. These days, hand-made soba restaurants are generally known for their deliciousness, but when you find something that stands out, it's a truly blissful experience. However, it is becoming increasingly popular everywhere, making it difficult to find (encounter). It is on par with Mizuho.

OYAKI CLUB Nagano City

Temporarily Closed
Takeout Restaurant
OYAKI CLUB Nagano City is a must-visit for food enthusiasts in the Nagano prefecture. The specialty here is the Japanese dumplings known as oyaki, which are stuffed with various fillings like vegetables, fruit, or beans. Nozawana oyaki, filled with a Japanese green leaf vegetable resembling choi sum, is a popular choice. Additionally, visitors can savor other local delicacies such as Shinshu Soba and Gohei Mochi.
(Translated by Google) Even though it's Oyaki Club, I went there just for the bagels. As expected, it was a hard and heavy bagel. If you want it to be softer, we recommend heating it in the microwave. This time, we have sweet cranberry & creche, fig, and cinnamon raisin. Also, the salt on top is simply delicious. I was also interested in the miscellaneous goods in the store, but for some reason it was difficult to get into them. There was one parking lot nearby on a gravel lot. The shop staff is also very nice and I would like to go there again. If you like hard bread, please give it a try. Sakurai-kanseido Sensekitei offers a delightful dining experience with a stunning garden view. Guests can savor delicious Matcha with Chestnuts in jam and complimentary roasted green tea while admiring the beautiful surroundings. The menu features delectable soba mushroom noodles and flavorful chestnut rice, including the highly recommended Kuri Okawa (rice boiled with chestnuts). It's an ideal place to indulge in tasty dishes while enjoying the serene ambiance of the garden.
Beautiful view and beautiful food. I ordered the hot duck cold soba dipping and it was really great. Overlooking a stunning garden. If you’re in the area and feel like some delicious soba, come here. Also, the desert was delectable!! We had to order another because my mum got jealous of my dessert and wanted to have her own.

The impressive Japanese eatery, Tomikuraya, offers a delectable array of traditional dishes. Conveniently located across from shops and nestled into the street, it stands out for its exceptional service. The considerate staff went above and beyond by providing a resting area for an unwell child. The noodles are truly delightful, accompanied by friendly and attentive service. As an added bonus, they even offer complimentary snacks while waiting for your meal.

(Translated by Google) I went there hoping to get the kakiage tempura that was recommended in reviews, but it's currently out of stock. I would have preferred the plain Zaru Soba, but they add something to it to raise the price, but I still think the prices are a bit high. The soba is really delicious, so I wish they would focus on Zaru Soba, but I guess that can't be helped since it's a tourist destination. The portions are small and not very satisfying. I'll upload the ones that shocked me. First of all, my first time trying Yamaudo pickled in soy sauce. It's a lot of homemade miso. I served it with fillet cutlet and steamed vegetables. It was also my first time to experience disposable hand towels wrapped in washi paper. Chopsticks have tapered ends These are polite chopsticks. Is it Yoshino? Pretty popular lunch spot in Obuse. It took us over an hour to wait to get seated for lunch at 1330. The food is served French cuisine style so in very dainty portions. After or while waiting for orders, guests can walk around the restaurant’s garden. They also have Alfresco dining and allow pets. The staff were accommodating by promptly providing hot water to make formula, and supplying us with a high chair for the baby as soon as we sat down. Parking is available at the Tsuruya supermarket just down the road.

St.Cousair Winery & Vineyards

Winery
Restaurant
St. Cousair Winery & Vineyards offers a delightful experience for both wine enthusiasts and families. The guided tour provides an educational insight into the winemaking process, allowing visitors to witness everything from grape cultivation to bottling. The tasting area and delicatessen offer a variety of interesting jams, wines, and sauces to sample. Additionally, the second floor houses a charming display of wine accessories and tableware from Poland.
One of the top 5 dinners of my life! My husband, three daughters (ages 10, 8 and 6) and I all went on the St. Cousair wine tasting tour and dinner. And I’m so glad we did! The tour lasted about 30 minutes where an English speaking guide showed and taught us about the wine making process at their winery from growing to corking. He even had a large piece of cork bark which he let the girls hold and each cork a bottle the old fashioned way. After the tour we went to the winery tasting area and delicatessen. I was surprised to learn of all the other wonderful natural foods that St. Cousair makes from jams and sauces to sausage and cheese. We tasted about 5 different wines and the girls were given a delicious grape juice. Last was the dinner at dusk which was the highlight. The restaurant with large windows sat on a hill over looking the lights and snow of the valley. It was a beautiful view and the white table clothed table was set so nicely. The children’s meal arrived first which is always nice for parents. The children’s meal was a large plate filled with an omelet stuffed with rice and veggies, homemade sausage, fried shrimp, soup, homemade bread and salad. I have moderate picky eaters but they loved all the food. Soon after the adults food arrived. From soup to salad to local salmon to the steak dinner every bite of the adult 4 course meal was delicious. And then the dessert! My husband said the chocolate mouse was the best he had ever tasted. We left the evening so satisfied. And the transportation from our hotel and back was an extra bonus. (From Akakura the drive was about 20 minutes). I think this dinner and tour is a hidden gem. It was definitely worth every penny and we will remember it always as one of the highlights to our vacation.

Don't let the Google ratings fool you on this one ! When we got there at 1330hrs the car park was full ! They apparently close at 1430 until the dinner service. Predominantly local crowd, good sign. English menu available( but the ordering machine has no translation). Interestingly, the Donabe Miso Tonkotsu has a choice of "rich" and "light" broth. Not telling which I ordered but I don't think it would have made a difference. They would have been both great. Another interesting note. The noodles are the round yellow egg type noodles you would commonly find in the rest of SE Asia. It will be cooked al dente, uncommon in SE Asia. The TanTan Men broth states its spicy. If you're from SEA and used to a little more heat, you might have to bring your own chili oil. This broth is unique in that it has an almost peanut flavor to it ! Finally, it's all served in a claypot. If you don't slurp it all up in 15 minutes like most locals, know that it'll remain hot for far longer than you remain hungry. To finish, a shout out to the helpful and friendly staff for helping these clueless foreigners ( the ordering machine does not accept "new" series Japanese yen notes).

(Translated by Google) This Japanese restaurant is located in a residential area a little away from the city and the main streets, so it can be difficult to find on your first visit. At lunchtime they offer mainly set meals, but they also have a "course meal" available for reservation. Each dish is an elaborate Japanese meal, so it is highly recommended. They also have a selection of Obuse Winery specialties to go with them (which are reasonably priced and come in a wide variety), so it's the perfect place for a special lunch. The restaurant is not large, and even though it's lunch, the preparations are elaborate, so it's not the kind of place you'd go for a quick bite to eat. (It's not too stylish, which is GOOD) As we visited around 7pm, the first floor was full of drinking groups, but we were guided to the second floor. There are various set meals such as seafood, chicken, pork, beef, and soba, but this time I felt like eating fish, so I ordered a kama salt-grilled set meal instead of sashimi. Basic Japanese food, including the price setting, seems more suitable for entertaining than for everyday use. Thank you for the meal. The food was wonderful, and the chef's skill and commitment could be seen throughout, even from the restaurant's atmosphere. The thick fried chicken has a soft and juicy texture when you bite into it. This is a Japanese restaurant that I would definitely like to visit again. You can enjoy your meal in peace as if you were at home somewhere. The menu is extensive, with a variety of set meals and a la carte items, all of which look delicious. This time, after much deliberation, I ordered the kama-shio-yaki set meal and the boiled tofu set meal with meat. The volume and taste were very good! The broth of the boiled tofu is light and has a deep flavor, and the addition of yuzu pepper enhances the flavor. The kama-shio-yaki is perfectly grilled and has a crispy skin, making it the best when eaten with the fish. I want to try other dishes next time. I went there for the first time after relocating in March 2024. I stopped by again on my way back from the hot springs. The store is located one street inward from the previous location. This time, we had the sashimi set meal and the mackerel stick set meal.I originally ordered a different menu, but the mackerel was available in limited quantities. I changed it because I wanted to! Thank you for your prompt change. It was my first time to eat Bo Yasu, but it was delicious because it was so fresh and there was no raw fish, just the right amount of pressure. The sashimi set meal was also delicious and I had a blissful time. There are some menu items that I haven't tried yet, so I'll be visiting again. Shinshu-Matsumoto Airport is the only airport in Nagano Prefecture, surrounded by rich nature and offering a great place for outdoor activities like walking, running, and cycling. It features a BBQ site, golf court, and vast flower garden. The compact airport provides souvenirs and dining options. Visitors can enjoy watching colorful planes while experiencing friendly staff and an easy check-in process.
Shinshu Matsumoto Airport is located in Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture. It is known as the highest airport in Japan and the only airport in Japan located in an inland prefecture. The airport building has three floors: the first floor is the ticket hall and arrival hall, the second floor is the departure hall and boarding waiting area, and the third floor is the shuttle bus deck.

(Translated by Google) I stopped by while test driving a car. I applied for a test drive that I could borrow for a few days, and I came here in a test drive car. The parking lot closest to the airport was full, and even though it was a weekday, there were quite a few people using it. I was able to park in the transit plaza right next to it. From here, it's just a 2-3 minute walk to the airport building. There is a memorial tree planted on the way, and a paper airplane-shaped plate made of iron is on it. Depending on how you look at it, the memorial tree looks like Godzilla. Please see the photo. There are souvenir shops and restaurants in the airport, so if you are in the area, it's a good idea to stop by here. There is a Yamabiko Dome and a park around the airport, and it must be very lively when events are held. If you go around to the other side of the airport, you will be able to see the runway from the line of sight. You can also take impressive photos of the planes. If I have the chance next time, I would like to take a leisurely walk on the other side as well. I didn't have much time this time, so I went out to the viewing deck and took photos of the planes. However, suddenly, there was an announcement that the plane was cancelled... I remember someone on the deck asking me again if the announcement was a cancellation and looking very surprised. After the announcement, passengers who had boarded the plane started to disembark, and I thought, this must be a big problem. I think I was there for about 30 minutes net, but since I had to go on to my next appointment, I picked up a tourist guidebook displayed next to the information counter on the first floor and left the airport. If I had the time, I'd like to experience traveling around Japan by connecting airports in other parts of the country. While it's compact for a regional airport, the interior is clean, boarding procedures were smooth, and it left an impression of being safe and secure. The parking lot is located in front of the terminal, and its free use is a major attraction. However, depending on the time of day, the front parking lot can be full, in which case you'll need to park in the second parking lot, which is a little further away. Although it's within walking distance, I recommend arriving with plenty of time to avoid being late for your boarding time. The official website also has a live camera that shows the parking lot's congestion status, so it's a good idea to check before you depart. The airport has shops and restaurants, and is stocked with Shinshu local specialties and souvenirs, so you can enjoy a relaxing time before and after your flight. I felt it was a user-friendly and friendly airport, perfect as a base for tourism and business. (Translated by Google) I used Matsumoto Airport (Shinshu Matsumoto Airport) for a business trip. It's the only airport in Nagano Prefecture, but currently only operated by FDA (Fuji Dream Airlines). It only operates a few routes, such as New Chitose, Kobe, and Fukuoka, and the number of flights is extremely limited, with only one or two round trips per day. It's so inconvenient that I honestly feel like it's on the verge of being shut down. It seems to have a history of being saved by the Shizuoka FDA, but I worry about how long it will last if things continue like this. Perhaps due to the low number of passengers, the terminal was quiet, and there seemed to be few souvenir shops. That said, this airport does have its good points. It's known as the airport with the highest altitude in Japan, and the views from the observation deck are outstanding. The view of planes taking off and landing against the backdrop of the Northern Alps is particularly spectacular during snowy season. The airport's compact size makes it easy to navigate and navigate, which is a plus. And best of all, free parking is a real bonus. However, because the airport is far from Matsumoto city, access to Matsumoto Station and other areas requires a bus, which takes time, so it's undeniably inconvenient. While the views may be irresistible for airplane enthusiasts, I felt it was a tough choice for travelers prioritizing business or convenience.

FDA flies to Sapporo, Kobe, and Fukuoka, while JAL's seasonal flights seem to be to Itami. There are no flights to Tokyo, perhaps because the distance is too short for a plane. There is a limousine bus to Matsumoto Station, but it takes about 40 minutes.
