Yubatake

Mentioned on
3 lists
Scenic spot
Yubatake is a central attraction in Kusatsu Onsen, Japan, featuring a man-made pool of geothermal water surrounded by bath houses and traditional inns. This hot water field was created to cool down the piping hot spring water and collect the minerals from it. The site consists of seven wooden slides that help cool the hot spring water, which wells out at a rate of 4,000 liters per minute. Yubatake is also known for its enchanting nighttime illumination.
This is Kusatsu’s famous natural hot spring source area that’s been developed for viewing. The area has a strong boiled egg smell from the sulfur. While impressive during the day, this place truly comes alive and looks much more beautiful at night when the lighting creates a more dramatic atmosphere.
Minwoo K — Google review
Very magical place. Must visiting one as tourist. Lots of bathhouses. Finding parking is little difficult for us as a foreigner. But at the last we found. The whole experience is nice and worthy. I enjoyed at the evening time with the lightings
Sadia O — Google review
It is a beautiful place. The view is awesome at night. It feels so nice to drink in from of this place. You can see a lot of stores here. And there is convenience store too. It is the most beautiful onsen place that I have ever seen in Japan
Ronnie I — Google review
PSA: IT SMELLS LIKE ROTTEN EGGS But the view is as beautiful as the pictures make it to be. In fact, I'd say pictures don't do it justice as to how beautiful and lovely the atmosphere actually is. Please go visit, it's just large enough.. not too big where you feel like you can't explore the whole area. Also not too small where you get bored after 30 minutes to an hour.
TatteredAllure — Google review
Kusatsu Onsen is one of the most atmospheric onsen towns we have visited. The highlight was the Yubatake (hot water field) in the town centre. Seeing the steam rise at night was beautiful and calming. The walk along the nearby shopping street was enjoyable, with many small shops and snacks to explore at a relaxed pace. The whole area felt safe, clean and easy to navigate. A wonderful place to unwind and enjoy the onsen town ambience. Highly recommended for both first-time and returning visitors.
Daddydrives — Google review
Very big landmark of this onsen city where surrounded by shops, restaurants, temple and hotels. Also have some spots to do the foot spa (onsen). We can smell the onsen water mineral. Really impressed
Mildthun — Google review
This location is one of the attractions of Japanese hot springs (onsen). It is not far from Osaka. It is very unique. You can enjoy a complimentary foot spa or public hot springs during your visit.
Raymond W — Google review
This place is not in everyone list but if you go there you will see hot sulfur water ponds this place is femous for winter season but you can do oneday trip from Tokyo There are some hotels and house you can find from Airbnb website Very small towns if you walk around you can see a small shop for shopping There is a temple and pagoda behind this water pond You have to climb few steps to reach there Very nice plaza surrounding this pond One of the nice place if you are visiting Japan

Mount Kusatsu-Shirane

Mountains
Mount Kusatsu-Shirane, an active stratovolcano with three crater lakes, is no longer accessible to the public. While a day trip to Karuizawa from Tokyo is possible, it's recommended to stay overnight in Kusatsu at one of its hot spring guesthouses. This allows visitors to fully experience the area and nearby attractions such as Mount Asama and the unique Onioshidashi Volcanic Park.
great place, excellent view, curvy road like S. Germany. Many tourists, some are speeding, souvenir shops are over-priced, food portions are small but indeed one of my favorite places.
Per A — Google review
Just found out that there is Mount Kusatsu, I always go to the hot springs. Today we arrived at Mount Kusatsu. It's a shame because it's foggy and the weather isn't good, you can't see the sulfur, the road is being repaired, and the parking lot is closed, a little below there is a place to park, there are wild blueberries growing on the rocks, the area is really beautiful and amazing, you can feel the clouds and sky very close. I'll come again.
Wita ( — Google review
Great view, splendid drive.
Ashraful A — Google review
Went there on a cloudy rainy day with mist obscuring the distance peaks. The drive up is quite scary with hair pin turns and there are sections with strong hydrogen sulphide smell coming through the cracks in the ground.

Onioshidashi Volcanic Park

Mentioned on
2 lists
National reserve
Sights & Landmarks
The Onioshidashi Volcanic Park is a magnificent location with paved pathways surrounded by rugged lava rock, seasonal azaleas and an exquisite view of the active Mount Asama in Japan. The park was formed by volcanic sediment deposited during the 1783 big eruption of Mount Asama. Visitors can explore various trails inside the park guided by boards, and a ticket purchase includes a guide.
This is a lava field with great scenery. It was born out of a 1783 volcanic eruption. A few routes ranging from 30 min to 60 min.
The B — Google review
If you go extremely leisurely I think you can finish all routes in 90-120min. I circled the outer rim one time and it took about 45 min. Plenty of parking outside which is free. The scenery was quite good, with volcanic rock formations and autumn colours all around 😊 I came 31st Oct 2024 which was apparently a little past peak, though, 2024 was a later year than normal for autumn colours.
Ang Y — Google review
Oniōshidashi Volcanic Park is an incredible place to witness the raw power of nature. We visited in the morning and was amazed by the landscape — a vast field of jagged black lava rocks formed from the 1783 eruption of Mount Asama. Walking through the trails feels like exploring another planet, with panoramic mountain views and unique rock formations at every turn. The contrast between the dark volcanic terrain and the surrounding greenery is breathtaking. There’s also a peaceful temple dedicated to the Goddness of Mercy Kannon (观音) within the park that adds a spiritual touch to the experience. It’s well-maintained, easy to navigate, and offers great photo spots. A must-visit for nature lovers and geology enthusiasts alike. Do try to spot the luminous moss hidden between the rocks crevices. Suggest to apply sunscreen or sunblock especially when the weather is sunny! Entrance is ¥700 per adult and ¥500 per children. There is also a toll fee of ¥280 in and out of the vicinity.
Ivan N — Google review
Onioshidashi Volcanic Park is a truly unique place to visit. The entire landscape was formed by the 1783 eruption of Mount Asama, and walking through the rugged lava fields feels almost otherworldly. The pathways are well maintained and make it easy to explore the area at your own pace. There are clear viewpoints where you can see Mount Asama in the distance, quietly reminding you of the power of nature. It is both fascinating and peaceful, and definitely worth a stop if you are travelling around Karuizawa or the surrounding region. A memorable experience for both adults and children.
Daddydrives — Google review
Very nice place with nice view and a temple. 2 hours would be more than enough for a full walk. If you are fast, 1 hour can cover most of the major routes.
Dreamknight70 — Google review
A volcanic park that you shouldn’t miss! The view is absolutely stunning. A perfect spot to admire the beauty of nature with your own eyes 😂😂 The entrance fee is also very affordable
Suwadee P — Google review
A nice scenery of volcanic rocks. It's a pity the place is covered with concrete and not much of the trail is kept natural. While I understand this makes it more accessible, it kind of killed the atmosphere for me. The buildings and facilities are also outdated, which gives it the feeling of an old theme park rather than a beautiful natural park. On top of that, half of the trails were closed because someone saw a bear a month ago. It would have been useful to know this when we entered. There's free parking, but to get here from Old Karuizawa or Kita-Karuizawa, you have to go through a paid "highway." I recommend setting your navigation for "no tolls," as we took a public road on the way back and it was a more comfortable drive. On the positive side, you can enter with a dog 🐕, and there's no additional fee for them. There's also a dog run next to the parking lot that costs about 1,000 yen (or 500 yen if you visit the park as well).

Sainokawara Open-Air Bath

Mentioned on
2 lists
Outdoor bath
Spa garden
Nestled in the midst of seasonal foliage, West Riverside open-air bath offers a serene retreat with its hot springs, shrines, and statues. Just a short walk from Kusatsu Onsen Ski Resort, this spacious roten-buro style onsen provides a relaxing experience. The water temperature varies by location and is hotter closer to the source. While there are no shower facilities or toiletries provided, visitors can enjoy the warm waters and picturesque surroundings.
Mix bath / Family time is only on Friday from 5:30pm If driving, parking is available across the main road near ski resort. You’ll have to cross the road and walk towards this Onsen. No washing area. Recommended to splash and was with warm water beside the baths. Lovely setting and huge! Take time to enjoy!
Candice K — Google review
Absolutely loved Sainokawara Open Air Onsen – we enjoyed it so much, we went twice in one day! The morning visit was already amazing, but we were pleasantly surprised to find out there’s a mixed-gender session in the evening, which made the experience even more special. The view of nature surrounding the onsen was stunning, and the onsen itself is incredibly spacious – one of the largest open-air onsen we’ve been to. A must-visit if you're in Kusatsu.
Chayoot V — Google review
It was my first time visiting here! I love the wider space here but the water wasn’t that clean and a lot of mosses. I don’t think taking bath during the midafternoon is a good idea. It’s bit hot and feeling slimy due to seaweed there. Since tons of people were there, water wasn’t not clear so recommended to go there early in the morning. Water is a bit salty and a cool experience for sure but there’s no shower so be aware of that! Other than that, enjoy! Cheers 🥂
Mr. D — Google review
This is my second favourite onsen in the area. There is only one pool area so the temperature selection is limited. The further you move away from the source the less hot it is, but it's still hot everywhere you go because it's just one pool. Important to note that there is no shower or rinse off area. I highly recommend to go on a day with a mix of sun and rain. This is my favourite onsen when it's raining.
Juan M — Google review
Amazing onsen with a scenic view. There is only a locker room and a large bath (no individual showers or washing areas). I recommend preparing a 100 yen coin for the locker.
- Y — Google review
It's an outdoor hot spring with blue sky view and fresh air. When you sit in the water too long and feel too hot, you can stand up for the cold breeze. In winter, the onsen is surrounded by snow, and some of the soft snow even falls from the roof, creating an amazing experience. I highly recommend it. There's no place to shower. Bring your own towel to dry yourself.
Mason T — Google review
It cost ¥800 to enter but well worth it. There is no proper shower place just a gallon of water with some small bucket to splash yourself. Bring your own (big & small) towel. Can be purchased but more pricey. Toliets are available. The onsen is very big also the size a basketball court. Surrounded my nature its very peaceful and relaxing in this public bath. Quite a walk up to this public bath but the scenery was beautiful.
Yvonne L — Google review
It's the largest rotenburo open air bath in Kusatsu. Y800 but there are no showers/washing stations. The bath area is huge and is divided into men and women for bathing, except for Fridays when the two are connected for both men and women and then not for naked bathing, and you should bring your swim suit. They have a slight discount if you get multi-onsen tickets where you get to visit one or two others for the discounted price.

Karuizawa Toy Kingdom

Amusement park
Water & Amusement Parks
Theme park
Karuizawa Toy Kingdom is a family-friendly entertainment venue that offers an extensive variety of both indoor and outdoor play spaces, attractions, activities, and crafts suitable for children. This amusement park boasts a plethora of rides, games, and recreation areas designed to engage young visitors in playful exploration and discovery. The facility caters to kids' diverse interests and preferences through its broad range of entertainment choices.
We visited on a Friday so it wasn't crowded at all and we spent 5 hours here with our 4-year-old. The outdoor forest adventure area was my favourite as the weather was great and the autumn colours were beautiful. The tree houses were very cute and there was a lot to explore. There is a small river where you can do trout-fishing and have grilled fish afterwards (note that you can only catch up to 2 fish and to minimise the waiting time, the fish that you eat is not the one that you catch). The view from the giant ferris wheel was spectacular. The rides were simple but perfect for young children. Overall, we had an enjoyable time outdoors on a perfect autumn day and the free pass was well worth it (2,600yen for adults and 2,400yen for children discounted).
Therese W — Google review
It’s a great place to take kids out for the entire day. Some rides could be updated, but it's a fun place to play. I recommend the adventure park located with the park. It is quite big and there is plenty of space to be wild. It's easy to lose track of time and spend a few hours at this attraction. There's forts, zip lines, places to climb and hike. Enjoy your visit!
Aaron E — Google review
Second times visit but this time on weekday. Stress free, less people around. Facilities seems dated but still so fun for kids. There were food trucks, which seems delicious. Less people in the afternoon.
Parinya P — Google review
This establishment is a suitable location for young children. My child derives great pleasure from visiting this establishment. It is advisable to utilize personal transportation when visiting this establishment. The establishment is not heavily populated, which results in a more enjoyable experience due to the absence of extensive queues.
Jerry C — Google review
It is a shame. The biggest attraction (kids adventure) is closed under perfect sunny weather. Staff said strong winds (no proof), and not shown in any app or sensed by anyone but herself. No refund, no notice before entry. It’s just a scam.
Felix C — Google review
Excellent amusement park for kids ages 1-8. The athletics area is the best area, similar to the forest adventure for kids. If they want to go one the rides I’d recommend getting a one day pass, but if they are content to just playing with toy’s then an entrance ticket is enough
Hikaru S — Google review
It's ok. Limited and dated rides - as long as the kids have fun.
Trip A — Google review
The climbing and play area in the forest is nice and quite large. The rides are typical of small theme parks. Very short, very small and generally only good for kids under 8. Wait times were very short otherwise none of the rides would be worth anyone's time.

To whom it may concern, I would like to express how appreciated and impressed I am during my stay in your hotel. This is our 3rd visit to Japan and Pascal is the 9th hotel we have staying in Japan. We are booking to stay at your hotel for 8 days and 7 nights, today is my 5th day staying but I can’t wait to write you a review 😆 Your hotel staff and the snow sports staff are wonderful and have great service minded 💜 We would like to extend our appreciation specifically to Miss Thunchanok. Her work ethic and professionalism is outstanding especially with her quick problems solving🥰 At first, we were unsure if we made the right decision canceled another ski resort with $300 AUD cancelation fee coming to your hotel. However, with the great service from Miss Thunchanok, we are delighted to say that we made the right choice indeed. Thank you so so much 😻🥰😍 There is another staff we would like to acknowledge with her professionalism, Sharon from the snowboarding team. As a fitness instructor myself, I can assure that her instructing skills and her knowledge are very valuable to your hotel. She is not only able to demonstrate her skills, but also able to teach base on individuality of each students. My family and I are definitely coming back to learn more skills with her in the next season ❄️🗻☃️
Mermeow A — Google review
Last Christmas, we visited Japan and wanted to learn how to ski. Staying at this resort was worth it—the ski instructors were excellent and provided personalized lessons based on individual needs. The staff, in general, were very friendly. However, the resort's buildings needed some maintenance, especially the doors, which required repairs. Dinner was disappointing due to the limited selection of Japanese food, which ran out quickly and was often served cold. Keeping the food warm should have been easy, but with dinner starting at 6 PM, arriving just 20 minutes late meant most of the food was already gone. Surprisingly, for a winter resort, there was no bar open during the day or evening—only during dinner service. Additionally, there were very few restaurants offering hot snacks or drinks for skiers to enjoy outdoors in the cold weather. As tourists, we also expected to find souvenirs like magnets, but none were available. There were no options for sightseeing in nearby small towns, and the resort didn’t offer any local products.

My first time ski in-out resort. I love that I can skiing all day long. Room and hotel is traditional decoration style, some light did not work out but it is not serious trouble for me. I love most is the environment around hotel. I came on high foggy days but still got my impressive in another way. It will be in my next year plan to revisit there!
Chakrit M — Google review
This hotel is absolutely lovely. All hotel’s staffs are really helpful and try very hard to make your stay memorable. The hotel manager is professional, On the first night our room had a problem and she offered a solution to fix this problem immediately. We love the staffs here. Ski in & Ski out is another great thing, our room has a view of ski slope and looks stunning when snowing. Onsen is average but offers everything you need. Free snowboard lesson also another nice offer of this hotel if you stay more than 3 nights. Sharon, snowboard instructor is the best. She is so skilled and patience to teach you. If you had a lesson with her, you will improve quickly. However, the other snowboard instructors are not good. They don’t teach you much at all and once you start asking questions (even about snowboard’s topic) they will get annoyed and give you answers that you don’t expect to hear and make you stop asking. I hope they will improve their issue in the future. We really like this hotel and looking forward to visit here again next season.

1st time to this ski resort. All the conveniences of a free shuttle bus pick up to and fro (hotel to Karuizawa station), breakfast and dinner provided (you can choose your options), onsen facilities, free ski locker for hotel guests, ski school and ski rentals under under one roof made this place simply amazing! Nice comfortable and clean rooms and a super friendly & responsive staff headed by Thansinee. Not forgetting the great ski instructors I had. So glad I chose a different place to ski this year!
Christina M — Google review
My partner and I really enjoyed our 5days stay and ski in this hotel. Room was simple(back to the 90s) but clean and quiet. We also enjoyed the hotel's indoor onsen, especially after our daily skiing. I was unwell and asked the receptionist if I could see a doctor. They were so helpful to arrange the transport and also informed the clinic of my symptoms ahead of my visit. The staff even called to check on me that evening. Really appreciate that personal touch from the team. Skiing: the slopes are beginner friendly. From someone like me who didn't know how to ski, managed to ski down the slope by day 2. The instructors were very friendly and patient. Highly recommended to take up the skiing class. It's not a luxury resort, but it was really nice and cozy. At the end of the stay, we managed to make a few friends with fellow hotel guests. Nice small community. Highly recommended.
Lingzhen T — Google review
Had a very nice experience staying at the resort Having never skied before I had 2.5 days of ski lessons , I left after a 4 day stay being able to navigate the slopes confidently and safely. Big thanks for the ski lessons of Katey , Molly and Eugene which were all amazing and very patient. The hotel manager was also amazing and very helpful. I would come back .

Convenient ski resort coming from Tokyo ! Free shuttle bus from karuizawa station . Though the hotel is a bit dated, it’s still a good option where you have everything you need for a relaxed ski holiday. Lifts were not too crowded and gondolas make life easier. Sharon White the snowboard instructor, she was so patient and Taught me some grounds tricks . Can’t wait for the next season to be back .

Although the lack of people is a cause for concern, it is a great blessing for players. Hell if you don't take measures to protect yourself from the cold Temperatures below -10℃ are common, and the lifts are slow, so if the wind blows, it's a disaster. It depends on the snow situation, but if you come from the Komoro area, the slope with a sharp curve of about 2 kg just before Yunomaru Ski Resort is so steep that you may not be able to climb it even with a statless ski. You have to pick up speed and climb all at once. If it stops, you're out. It's a little far from the highway, so access isn't that great, and it's small, so it was deserted even during the holidays. There are no parks or anything like that, so there are hardly any snowboarders. On the other hand, it's a very friendly ski resort for beginners. I would highly recommend it for families with children who don't have much experience. The beginner course is a fair distance away and is refreshing, so I think beginners will be satisfied. I imagined it would be quite gritty because of the high rate of sunny days, but thanks to the snow that fell the day before, we were able to get some powder snow on the day, which felt great. The tempura itself is freshly fried, offering a satisfyingly crispy texture.

I visited at noon, but the parking lot was crowded with out-of-prefecture license plates. There are counter seats, table seats, and seats, but the box is not that big. Stores also seem to recommend advance reservations during busy times. This time I had the walnut soba (900 yen). The taste of the walnut sauce is comparable to the taste I had in the authentic Shinshu area, and I was in agony. It's amazing that it costs less than 1,000 yen.

My family and I opted for the delectable mentaiko and avocado cream soup pasta, omelet set, beef stew omelet rice, and beef stew hamburger.
If you visit Asama area or the onioshidashi volcanic park, you must visit this beautiful Cafe. My partner Jane and i enjoyed The Salad, curry and deserts very much. They are not your standard Western food, they are excellent fusion of Japanese and Western cuisine with beautiful presentations and delicate yet complex flavours. Mama and Machi are very kind and helpful. The cafe sits in a beautiful location surrounded by a small forest. overall the meal was superb.

Very Cozy, also 10/10 Omurice. Will definitely come again. Also if you ask for extra they really give you extra extra not just rice but sauce too.

No English menu and the owners cannot speak English. Thanks to G Translate, we can order what we want :) Recommended here is their crocket, omu rice, and pork katsu curry rice. Although quite old, but this place feels quite cozy, with big windows looking through the trees outside. And also dog-friendly! They have little garden in front of their cafe, so you can enjoy various flowers and plants while waiting for the seats.

Shabby little place, the lady running it is very nice and dogs are accepted inside. The food was better than anticipated but not very good, service is very slow.

I ordered a meal for 3,300 yen per person with a set of nigiri and rolls. It took over 20 minutes after ordering, and the sushi that came out was 7 nigiri rolls and 4 rolls. I wonder how something like this could take more than 20 minutes. I've been to several sushi restaurants, but this is the first one that took me this long. The taste was ok. The material is large. Tengu Shokudo

$$$$cheap
Syokudo and Teishoku restaurant
Tengu Shokudo is an affordable and efficient eatery that exudes a nostalgic charm reminiscent of a traditional diner. Upon entering, customers are instantly drawn in by the inviting atmosphere. The menu offers a variety of options, including their specialty offal boiled set meal. It is advisable to take one's time and thoroughly peruse the menu before making a decision. One popular choice is the large portion of rice accompanied by the flavorful boiled motsu.

I passed it at first without finding the location, then made a U-turn at a convenience store. There was a parking space available, so I popped in. The restaurant was surprisingly spacious, with tables to accommodate various groups. I was alone, but they said I could sit anywhere, so I took a four-person table. Since it was getting a little chilly, I decided on the nabeyaki udon set for 1,000 yen. It was served in less than five minutes. The piping hot nabeyaki udon had a strong flavor and was perfect for a cold day. The udon itself was quite ordinary, though. The side dish was macaroni salad. The lightly pickled cabbage was nicely seasoned and still had a nice crunch. The stewed offal was a little on the strong side, but I ate it with rice. This menu is quite expensive for a tourist destination, but it's reasonably priced, so I guess it attracts a lot of locals. Everyone ordered the yakiniku set meal, so I was intrigued. Next time I'll try the Yakiniku set meal. Outside the store, there is an unmanned cabbage stand. This season's harvest was bumper, so I bought some for 100 yen each as a souvenir. Thank you for the meal. The road on the Kusatsu side was closed due to snowfall, and I was in despair, when God came to my rescue. Tsumagoi cabbage, a local specialty, was served as steak in curry. I hate vegetables, but Tsumagoi cabbage is delicious! It doesn't have any strange odor or bitterness like cabbage sold at urban supermarkets, so even people who don't like cabbage should give it a try. However, the combination of cabbage and pasta didn't suit my taste, so I recommend the curry. I was able to clearly remember the specialty Tsumagoi cabbage. I chose the great value set menu. A cute mini cutlet bowl and cold tanuki soba. It's not special, but it doesn't disappoint. It was just as I imagined and delicious. I'll try the most popular jumbo cutlet rice when it cools down. The other menu items are cheap and filling, so I recommend coming with friends or family. I couldn't eat it, but I guess the Chinese food is good. Makoto Sushi

Sushi restaurant
Don't overlook this establishment! This intimate eatery brings immense joy. Their sushi and sashimi offerings are unparalleled and exceptional. Each individual piece of sushi and sashimi is meticulously crafted. Notice a distinct flavor in their sushi, especially the Japanese omelet, which adds to its delectability. I would highly recommend this restaurant to any aficionado of sushi and sashimi. Adore this quaint hidden sushi establishment.
Come for the hot springs, stay for the sushi here. The chirashi bowl is a highlight - the rice is seasoned with a gentle amount of vinegar, topped with pickles and even a side of mushroom to add a change of texture and flavour. The sashimi is served separately with some incredible cuts of tuna and squid to keep the whole meal interesting throughout the whole meal. A little yuzu peel in the miso soup finishes of this memorable experience.

I've been many places and had an abundance of Sushi, but this place deserves to be legendary. The quality, the taste, they deserve the highest praise, it is just amazing. Some of the best Sushi I have ever had. I highly recommend this place, it is a hidden gem.

You can feel that the chef is a master of what he is doing. The rice, the fish, and the atmosphere seem authentic. You will not be disappointed.

Very quiet during dinner time. The sushi was good but a little more expensive for the amount you received. All of it was delicious though! The service was friendly and they seemed busy working on to go orders.

The restaurant is very cute. The sushi is delicious, the ingredients are cooked, and the chef and wait staff are very cute.

Love this small hidden sushi bar. My wife and I went here for dinner and the food was fantastic! Being from Vancouver we are used to high quality sushi, but this brought an authentic sushi experience and very tasty fish. Highly recommend trying this place out for any sushi fan.

Military base
Yokota Air Base in Japan hosts the annual Friendship Festival, a highly anticipated event that showcases a wide array of aircraft including U.S. military and Self-Defense Force planes. Visitors are often amazed by the vastness of the sky and the rare opportunity to see these planes up close. Despite long lines, the experience is deemed worthwhile as attendees witness flight demonstrations and gain insight into national defense efforts.
This is a U.S. Air Force base. It is one of the most popular bases among U.S. soldiers. Except for special events, the number of people who can enter is limited. Nationals of China, Afghanistan, and other countries with poor or complicated relations with the U.S. are not allowed here, even during special events. If you have a permitted nationality, you may enter on regular days with an escort from a U.S. soldier. There are restrictions on what can be purchased on the base due to customs and tariffs between Japan and the U.S. This is in addition to the restrictions on what can be allowed in Japan. At least in the food court of the BX, you can purchase goods without any problem. If you are visiting here, have fun.

Staff are amazing. Young gentleman gave us a ride to the train station and stopped along the way for an ATM. Showed us how to set up payment for tickets as well.

5/18/2025 Visited here the second time for the yearly Japan America Friendship festival. Everyone in the army was nice and kind. They do accept USD but still do the conversion to JPY so JPY was so weak. Cash based cashiers during the festival. Some air performances were shown and people were so excited and taking pictures and videos. Some real American stuff were there for the event, too.

It was a wonderful festival! I hope that the cultures of both Japan and America, and the people of both countries, will continue to be friendly in the future. I also hope that we will be new DEI - embracing diversity, and cherishing identity - as friends.

Shinshu-Matsumoto Airport

Airport
Domestic airport
Regional airport
Shinshu-Matsumoto Airport is the only airport in Nagano Prefecture, surrounded by rich nature and offering a great place for outdoor activities like walking, running, and cycling. It features a BBQ site, golf court, and vast flower garden. The compact airport provides souvenirs and dining options. Visitors can enjoy watching colorful planes while experiencing friendly staff and an easy check-in process.
Shinshu Matsumoto Airport is located in Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture. It is known as the highest airport in Japan and the only airport in Japan located in an inland prefecture. The airport building has three floors: the first floor is the ticket hall and arrival hall, the second floor is the departure hall and boarding waiting area, and the third floor is the shuttle bus deck.

A must place to go, because you can do a lot of things especially when you're an outdoor person. You can just walk or run out biking also. Perfect place for family or friends to have gatherings. A place where you can find peace. I love this place din much.

(Translated by Google) I stopped by while test driving a car. I applied for a test drive that I could borrow for a few days, and I came here in a test drive car. The parking lot closest to the airport was full, and even though it was a weekday, there were quite a few people using it. I was able to park in the transit plaza right next to it. From here, it's just a 2-3 minute walk to the airport building. There is a memorial tree planted on the way, and a paper airplane-shaped plate made of iron is on it. Depending on how you look at it, the memorial tree looks like Godzilla. Please see the photo. There are souvenir shops and restaurants in the airport, so if you are in the area, it's a good idea to stop by here. There is a Yamabiko Dome and a park around the airport, and it must be very lively when events are held. If you go around to the other side of the airport, you will be able to see the runway from the line of sight. You can also take impressive photos of the planes. If I have the chance next time, I would like to take a leisurely walk on the other side as well. I didn't have much time this time, so I went out to the viewing deck and took photos of the planes. However, suddenly, there was an announcement that the plane was cancelled... I remember someone on the deck asking me again if the announcement was a cancellation and looking very surprised. After the announcement, passengers who had boarded the plane started to disembark, and I thought, this must be a big problem. I think I was there for about 30 minutes net, but since I had to go on to my next appointment, I picked up a tourist guidebook displayed next to the information counter on the first floor and left the airport. If I had the time, I'd like to experience traveling around Japan by connecting airports in other parts of the country.

(Translated by Google) I used Shinshu Matsumoto Airport in Matsumoto City. While it's compact for a regional airport, the interior is clean, boarding procedures were smooth, and it left an impression of being safe and secure. The parking lot is located in front of the terminal, and its free use is a major attraction. However, depending on the time of day, the front parking lot can be full, in which case you'll need to park in the second parking lot, which is a little further away. Although it's within walking distance, I recommend arriving with plenty of time to avoid being late for your boarding time. The official website also has a live camera that shows the parking lot's congestion status, so it's a good idea to check before you depart. The airport has shops and restaurants, and is stocked with Shinshu local specialties and souvenirs, so you can enjoy a relaxing time before and after your flight. I felt it was a user-friendly and friendly airport, perfect as a base for tourism and business. (Translated by Google) I used Matsumoto Airport (Shinshu Matsumoto Airport) for a business trip. It's the only airport in Nagano Prefecture, but currently only operated by FDA (Fuji Dream Airlines). It only operates a few routes, such as New Chitose, Kobe, and Fukuoka, and the number of flights is extremely limited, with only one or two round trips per day. It's so inconvenient that I honestly feel like it's on the verge of being shut down. It seems to have a history of being saved by the Shizuoka FDA, but I worry about how long it will last if things continue like this. Perhaps due to the low number of passengers, the terminal was quiet, and there seemed to be few souvenir shops. That said, this airport does have its good points. It's known as the airport with the highest altitude in Japan, and the views from the observation deck are outstanding. The view of planes taking off and landing against the backdrop of the Northern Alps is particularly spectacular during snowy season. The airport's compact size makes it easy to navigate and navigate, which is a plus. And best of all, free parking is a real bonus. However, because the airport is far from Matsumoto city, access to Matsumoto Station and other areas requires a bus, which takes time, so it's undeniably inconvenient. While the views may be irresistible for airplane enthusiasts, I felt it was a tough choice for travelers prioritizing business or convenience.

(Translated by Google) It's a small regional airport. Basically only FDA serves the airport, but JAL sometimes operates seasonal flights. FDA flies to Sapporo, Kobe, and Fukuoka, while JAL's seasonal flights seem to be to Itami. There are no flights to Tokyo, perhaps because the distance is too short for a plane. There is a limousine bus to Matsumoto Station, but it takes about 40 minutes.
