Obuse-machi in 3 days

If you only have 3 days to spend in Obuse-machi, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Obuse is a small historic town known for its connection to ukiyo-e master Katsushika Hokusai, with museums and galleries displaying his works. Its compact streets are lined with traditional storehouses, gardens, and sake breweries, making it easy to explore on foot. The town is also famous for chestnut-based sweets and local cuisine, often enjoyed in old-style merchant houses. Convenient access from Nagano City makes it a relaxed day-trip base with a distinctly rural, Edo-era atmosphere.
With favorites like Nihonnoakari Museum, Takesan ramen Obuse, and Obuse Park, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like そば歳時記 富蔵家 and evolve so you can get the best taste of Obuse-machi while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Buddhist temple
Sights & Landmarks
Sacred & Religious Sites
Nestled in the heart of Nagano City, Zenkōji Temple is a breathtaking testament to Japan's rich Buddhist heritage. Established in 642 AD, this iconic temple boasts over 1,400 years of history and is home to the revered Ikkosanzon Amida Nyorai statue, recognized as Japan's oldest Buddhist icon.
Walking into Zenkōji felt like stepping gently into a spiritual haven nestled in the heart of Nagano. The temple’s grand entrance and long wooden corridor immediately set a tone of quiet reverence, inviting us to slow down and soak in the atmosphere. We visited in the afternoon, and the temple grounds were peaceful despite being a popular spot. Bakers of light streamed through the temple halls, illuminating carved pillars and ancient statues. The main hall is impressive—not overbearing, but commanding enough to remind you of centuries of devotion and history. We even opted for the optional underground passage tour, guided by touch in pitch-black darkness. It was a fascinating, tactile way to connect with the temple’s spiritual roots. Outside, the temple gardens were beautifully kept, with seasonal flowers and lush greenery softly framing the buildings. We also joined a short chanting session—simple, rhythmic, and oddly calming. It was one of those unexpected, meditative moments that stay with you. Zenkōji isn’t just a beautiful sight—it’s a place you feel, breathe, and connect with. It offers layers of experience: history, architecture, spirituality, and nature, all woven together. A visit here feels like giving yourself a moment of mindful reflection in the middle of your travels.

This temple is absolutely beautiful and our favourite so far. There are much less tourists here which gives you the opportunity to savour and enjoy the surroundings. The template has been so well preserved and has lots of small shrines and a gate on the approach up to it with beautiful trees and plants and lanterns all around. There are also lots of little restaurants and places to buy souvenirs. A really beautiful place.
Ramsharan S — Google review
What a massive and truly awe-inspiring temple! Easily one of the most impressive I’ve visited in Japan. The architecture and atmosphere are breathtaking, and the sense of history is felt everywhere. We were very lucky to chance upon a blessing by the temple’s chief abbot, which made the visit even more special. A must-see when in Nagano!
Shirling A — Google review
This temple is truly remarkable. It was constructed over a millennium ago and has been meticulously preserved under Japanese stewardship. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it stands as a testament to the enduring beauty and cultural significance of Japan. A visit to this iconic attraction is undoubtedly a must for any traveler exploring the country.
Raymond W — Google review
Went here as an unplanned visit after arriving in Nagano and being told that the snow monkeys were not in the onsen after arriving at Nagano Station. It turned out to be a wonderful surprise, and the Zenkōji temple is definitely well worth a visit. Went in the afternoon around 2pm just as the sun was going down, which gave a special light to the area. There is both an element of gravitas as a place of worship and a memorial site. Several Japanese locals visited to pay religious respects, including many elderly Japanese citizens who likely have familial ties to the place. The grounds are serene and well maintained and the walk up the cobblestoned path feels almost like a pilgrimage. A lot of locals walk and carry dogs in prams. A pitbull in a pram/dress, a manicured sausage dog with knitted hats. A husky in a full dress. Many locals in kimono. The foodstalls felt a bit out of place on the walk up the hill, but the other stores selling prayer materials and small souvenirs did feel vibrant and not too heavily commercialized. November is a good time of year to go. The Japanese maples start to turn red, the crowds are too great and the temperature is crisp. It felt like a very authentic visit and one I would highly recommend.
Carla C — Google review
One of the best in Japan…Awesome architecture and space. This temple has many nooks and crannies, paths and buildings, to view. Learn about the raccoon dog or write a message on Rilakumma - a mix of old and new! We spent 2-3 hours here.

Beautiful temple with a great pedestrian only shopping street in front. The whole area smelled of insence and there was a lot to look at. Don't need tickets. It's about a half hour walk from the main train station.
Heather T — Google review
Beautiful temple, completed by the road of shops leading up to it. The area offered a great little shopping experience and, in early November, was bright and warm with fall colours. Great tourist half-day out, and walkable from Nagano Station.

Nature & Parks
Obuse Park is a 36-acre landscaped park featuring an 18-hole golf course, tennis court, playground, and fountains. It's a great spot for various activities such as jogging along the Matsu River in spring or enjoying cherry blossom viewing (ohanami). The park offers a serene environment with well-maintained plants and facilities for visitors to enjoy. Families can make the most of the park with its jogging loop, dog runs, and playground equipment.
Used the Day camp and barbecue area. It is free to use with reservation and the grill racks are only ¥400 to rent. The barbecue area is all in the shade under trees. Will definitely use again.

(Translated by Google) It's directly connected to the expressway, and you can park in the parking lot inside and then head to the roadside station and park. It's also directly outside the ETC exit, making it extremely accessible. The parking lot right in front of the roadside station gets crowded, so it's difficult to find a spot unless you time it just as other cars are leaving. There are several parking lots nearby. The roadside station has a restaurant and a great souvenir corner. The park is very spacious, and in the summer you can play in the fountain. In the fall, the contrast of red and yellow leaves is spectacular. People often have picnics on the grass, and the playground equipment is large, so children can play to their heart's content. Fish food can be purchased from a gachapon machine in a nearby building for 100 yen. I recommend this water play area, which can be enjoyed by children of all ages, from preschoolers to elementary school students. Perhaps because it's not very well known, it's not as crowded as in Tokyo, and children can enjoy splashing around in the water. I recommend this place to anyone looking for a place for children to play while taking a break in the Nagano or Niigata area. (Translated by Google) This is a great park for walking your dog. While you can't enter the fountain or the grass, there are three dog runs for all sizes, so even dogs who don't like big dogs will be fine. During leaf season, it can be annoying to see tigers left mixed in with the leaves, but the silver-haired owners clean them up from time to time. We appreciate that. The parking lot is full during events, but usually it's empty. The parking lot on the west side is difficult to enter and exit, so we recommend the parking lot on the east side. Cafe
Obusedo is a sophisticated Japanese restaurant in Obuse that offers modern flavors using seasonal vegetables. The dining experience can be enjoyed as a bento style meal or as a course, with the same content and price. Customers have praised the prompt service and delicious food, particularly highlighting the chestnut dessert. The restaurant's reasonable prices and traditional Japanese buildings make it a nice place to stop for a break while exploring the quiet town of Obuse.
What a lunch at 小布施堂! The price is very reasonable, and the selling point is the 'chestnut'. Honestly, the dessert overwhelmingly outpaced the other courses, although they were also excellent. 😅😅😅😅😅😅

We stopped by Obuse for a short trip and found this restaurant. We had a set meal here and everything was wonderful! We were one of the few customers and Wa served promptly. Food was so good we ordered a second set.
Miss P — Google review
Had the chestnut and the strawberry shaved ice. Was nice, but people kept looking at me and my wife because, I think, we were a mixed couple. Also, service acted like this too. Other than that, amazing shaved ice.
Little F — Google review
Had a rich chestnut experience here xxx If you love chestnuts this is the place to come. I reserved the special lunch course which was very fulfilling, and seats were well social distanced. Just one note, the 朱雀Suzaku (100% chestnut) was a little to big of a proportion for one person (in my opinion)...! I was already a satisfied with half the size!! P.s. people sitting next to us brought some container themselves and were taking the Suzaku home ! Haha I mean that’s how big it is. But unfortunately they don’t have any more this year... you can try next year if you’re interested!
M K — Google review
You can enjoy very sophisticated Japanese food at this restaurant. Using seasonal vegetables, the cooking method is great, and the flavour is very modern. If you want to eat early, I think it's a bento style, and if you have time, you should make it a course. The food content and price are the same.

The limited menu includes sets featuring the famous chestnut rice along with savory sides or fish options.
The service is great! And the food is delicious and healthy! Great atmosphere ! Our first time having chestnut rice!

This shop specializes in chestnut-themed dishes and desserts. I had the Chestnut rice and a dessert comprising a chestnut cream with crispy rice mochi. The restaurant is above the confectionary which sells a broad range of chestnut-based sweets and desserts available for purchase.

We went there over the extended weekend. The place was very crowded. We plan to have lunch and waiting time was about 25 minutes. The food is great. Very reasonably priced and as is usually the case, the staff is nice. We ordered the usual set lunch and also a desert dish which was also very good. The Shop cum restaurant is at the corner so has a good view as well. You can try them if you are around.
Samarth R — Google review
We had the vegetable lunch set which came with its famous chestnut rice and it did not disappoint. The chestnuts shaved ice was also very nice on a warm summer day. A little on the pricey side but worth a try when in Obuse.
Eugene T — Google review
Excellent chestnut rice. Flavor was wonderful. The sides in the set were all tasty and interesting. They have a limited menu. You can get a set of chestnut rice with or without a fish and not much else in terms of savory food. They do have some dessert and tea sets which are nice if a little pricey. Around lunch time expect to wait for a table. It goes relatively quickly though.

Art museum
The Hokusai Museum is a charming attraction located in a quiet town, making it an ideal spot for art enthusiasts or those seeking a break from the usual tourist destinations. The museum showcases an array of stunning paintings and wood-block prints by the renowned ukiyo-e artist Katsushika Hokusai.
Beautiful and awesome comes to mind. The reproduction is impeccably done. The originals are superb and we were lucky to see some of those exhibited here. Enough said. Do come and be amazed.
Teresa Y — Google review
Beautiful little museum about Hokusai, which focuses on his earlier manga style work, and a few major pieces from his time in Obuse, mainly the festival carriages. Unfortunately, not many of his most well known work, just one or two. A shame since we came from Nagano just for that. Still a beautiful little museum in a beautiful little town.
Olivier G — Google review
Should a museum be called the “Hokusai Museum “ and only have one or two minor works by the artist displayed? There were works by other artists displayed, a couple of minor Hokusai works, and two 15 minute videos about Hokusai. I was disappointed to say the least especially when you consider that Hokusai is said to have created over 30,000 works over his lifetime. If you plan to visit, make sure to check the website beforehand so you are aware of what’s available. For a much better experience, I recommend the Hokusai museum in Asakusa, Tokyo. On a positive note, the restroom was clean and the air conditioning was a welcome relief from the hot summer weather.
Harry — Google review
Absolutely wonderful and I learned so much about the painting style of Edo period and appreciated many artists. It is a great place and their children room is a big homage to Master Hokusai
Filippo C — Google review
I liked the place but even more the devotion of the artist a lot. The two videos with information about the artist and his art (15 minutes each, English subtitles) are very interesting. An artist with his peak at 70+ years is just amazing. The art itself is also really lovely and getting more and more colorful. Being in Obuse definitely worth going to this museum.
Frank T — Google review
Great exhibit but not a lot of Hokusai works. They where having a special exhibit for 19th-century Japanese artist. Their works are similar. His work was on loan. His panel art on a temple carrying thing? Was worth the time. I loved the gift shop. They had one-of-a-kind stuff with his art.
Ben H — Google review
Nice curated museum. With the exposition of Hokusai works and his influence on world art. The museum has a gift shop and kids playroom. The two documentaries with English subtitles will help you understand who the "mad painter" is and why he is so important for Japanese culture. Recommended for visiting.
Slava S — Google review
Visiting hokusai museum is one of top things to do for me during my japan trip. The town itself, obuse, where hokusai spends his final year and on his career peak, are interesting and feels very rural. The museum itself displays hokusai artwrok in best way possible and the movie at the first exhibitiion displays the historical of hokusai artwork very properly, including his journey and his meeting with takai kouzan which helps escalating his art career. 1000 yen entry fee is very worth spending to see his journey in creating masterpiece of painting

The impressive Japanese eatery, Tomikuraya, offers a delectable array of traditional dishes. Conveniently located across from shops and nestled into the street, it stands out for its exceptional service. During my recent trip to Obuse, I had the pleasure of dining at Evolve, a gem that truly stands out in the culinary scene. Although I only indulged in their renowned Mont Blanc dessert, it was an experience worth savoring. The chestnut puree was a delightful blend of creamy and light textures, bursting with rich chestnut flavor. Accompanied by ice cream and a tart base, each bite offered a wonderful mix of sensations.
Just truly delicious 🤤 It took ages to travel from Tokyo but it was worth a visit. Seasonal vegetable based dishes especially Marunasu (big round local aubergine) was divine! Summer truffle pasta was light but yet flavoursome, local apple fed beef and pork dishes were to die for. I can’t wait to visit there again.

Yesterday, we had dinner in this restaurant. It was a very pleasant experience to culminate our trip to obuse. They were very attentive and it is some of the better value per money places I have been in Japan. Very very good. I recommend if you pass by Obuse.

We visited Evolve in February 2025 but didn't have the savoury menu and just had the Mont Blanc. We've tried the Mont Blancs at a few of the other cafes around Obuse but Evolve's was definitely the best. The chestnut puree was creamy yet light and rich in chestnut flavour. The ice cream in the centre and tart base made for a great mix of textures and flavours. The Mont Blanc also came with an accompaniment of sauces that complimented the dessert well. The decor of the restaurant is clean and comfortable with a nice view of a Japanese garden outside. The staff member who served us was also super friendly and explained the dish in detail. Would definitely go again!

Beautiful view and beautiful food. I ordered the hot duck cold soba dipping and it was really great. Overlooking a stunning garden. If you’re in the area and feel like some delicious soba, come here. Also, the desert was delectable!! We had to order another because my mum got jealous of my dessert and wanted to have her own.

The chestnut rice was so good cause the rice was sticky rice, which i love. Big and spacious restaurant with a garden outside, very zen, very demure. Food came out quickly, waiters are nice and polite.

Influenced by the Google review and choose to try this restaurant. I am very pleased with the quality of food. 3000yen for a lunch Gosen set including handmade soba , sticky rice with chestnuts , tempura , vegi soup , eggplant plus pickles . Really value for money . Highly recommended !!

Best food (chestnut rice with prok) we had in Japan since we came 2 weeks ago. The value for money is great. Atmosphere amazing (get a table with a garden view). Love it and hoping we will come back.

Really beautiful garden to stare at while you eat. I just got Matcha with Chestnuts in jam and it was super tasty. You also get roasted green tea free of charge and I loved being able to really enjoy the flavour of the chestnuts while enjoying the view.

This was my second visit to the restaurant. Food, service are all fantastic. The soba with hot duck broth is my favourite. The set meal with the chestnut rice is also a crowd pleaser.

Family driven Italian restaurant serving pizza , pasta and a few sides. Located in the middle of many apple orchards. April and May you can look at bunch of white flowers in apple trees. Very nice scenery for this tiny restaurant. You need to adapt their serving pace as there are only chef and server to handle all tasks but food is descent and somewhat surprising with its excellent quality. I was disappointed with noisy talks by a few ladies near by my table in upstairs but myself and friend were very much enjoyed lunch. Recommended place but no English menu available.

When we came in to the restaurant at opening time it was completely empty we were the only people there, I speak decent Japanese and we were refused service! I tried to ask her why and was basically told No Thank You... no Gaijin!! a.k.a. no foreigners! This is very sad I was there with myself and my three children and we have driven quite a way to eat at this restaurant.
Jennifer A — Google review
Turned away because the tables and bar were “reserved” even though the restaurant was mostly empty. Seemed more like the staff didn’t want to seat us because we weren’t Japanese. Pretty common outside major cities.

(Translated by Google) Just a little way from Obuse's main street, I found a typical Kawai restaurant in a quiet setting. However, the restaurant is spacious and there is seating on the second floor as well. The pizza, pasta, salads and desserts all looked delicious. This time I had pasta with tomato sauce. I couldn't remember the name as it was the first time I'd seen it. 💦 I think it was pancetta and some kind of cheese. The pasta used was thick and very filling. One of the dishes on the menu was unusual (for me), made with beef tripe. The restaurant had a great atmosphere.

Gansho-in is a popular temple located about two kilometers away from the Hokusai Museum, towards Mount Karita. Visitors can enjoy a scenic walk or hire a bicycle to reach the temple in 15 minutes. The main sanctuary of Gansho-in houses an original Hokusai painting on its ceiling, featuring a famed 1848 mythical bird. The temple staff are known for their friendliness and hospitality, providing Japanese explanations of the temple's history and Hokusai's painting.
The most impressive temple artwork I've ever seen in Japan. The Phoenix is stunning and the guides are very gracious with English translations of their explanations of the painting. There is a lot more to see besides the ceiling painting itself. Beautiful woodwork and a small museum like area showing the pigments and dyes used as well as other statues and artifacts. No photos allowed so be sure to pick up a postcard to remember the Phoenix gazing at you!
Brian R — Google review
Absolutely fantastic to see Hokusai's phoenix in it's original setting. It only takes half an hour to walk from the Hokusai museum and is well worth it. No pictures are allowed inside the shrine so this has to be seen with your own eyes.
James H — Google review
Located in Obuse, its a shrine that's not as well-known but definitely worth the visit if you are driving as its slightly out of the way. The temple houses a masterpiece by Hokusai, the master Japan artist (the same master that painter that created the The Great Wave off Kanagawa). You can't take photos inside the temple but there will be guide that will breakdown the amazing aspects of the art for you; if you view the painting mounted on the roof for example, the outline pigments change from black to sliver! Behind the main hall you can find a Frog-Fighting Pond and the frogs are SO CUTE (as shown). Please visit and experience the beauty and cute frogs!
James A — Google review
The people running Gansho-in are some of the friendliest I've ever talked with in Japan. They're just lovely. The main thing people come to see is the giant phoenix painted by Hakusai, but they actually have some other neat artifacts as well dating back to the Sengoku period. I love the place and would like to come back again some time.
Bill K — Google review
Came to check out the gigantic hokusai phoenix on the ceiling. It was incredible.
David T — Google review
Amazing stuffs explaining interesting stories; how Hokusai painted the phoenix, life of Hokusai, characteristic of the pigment (it looks different colors according to the direction!!), Masanori Fukushima’s story(and Kuroda-bushi, well known as a drinking song…^^), … I was very lucky that I could enjoy the best season for Iris Japonica…
Kentaro K — Google review
Amazing visit, it’s a really small temple but really worth it for the Hokusai painting. He painted it at 90 years old just before he passed away. The colors of the Phoenix are beautiful and untouched since the original painting. Worth to mention that everything is explained in English m. No pictures allowed.

Jokoji, a lesser-known Buddhist temple compared to the one featuring Hokusai's painting, offers a serene and less crowded experience. Unlike its popular counterpart, Jokoji doesn't require an entrance fee and attracts fewer tourists. The temple is surrounded by picturesque apple and grape orchards, creating a bucolic ambiance for visitors. Inside, there is an intriguing stone staircase leading to the main hall located amidst cherry blossom-filled groves during springtime.
This place is really wonderful, unlike the other temples this one is really not that crowded, furthermore the atmosphere of the place makes you feel as if you were in a lost temple in the Japanese country.

Beautiful temple at the foot of the mountain but the stone stairs up to the main temple area in such disarray that it's a bit treacherous for anyone who isn't agile like a goat!

Less well-known than the temple with the Hokusai painting, there are also fewer tourists and no entrance fee. It's worth the bucolic walk through apple and grape orchards. There is an interesting stone staircase and the main hall is located in a grove with cherry blossoms in spring. Only annoying thing was this recorded explanation that was really loud and long and all Japanese, but if you or someone else don't push the button, it's ok!

(I ride an off-road bike though) At first, I was wondering what kind of facility I was going to visit. If you approach the small ``jump slope'', you will also find an ``air mat for landing''. Skiers like ``aerials'' use a pool to soften the shock, but skateboarders and snowboarders practice in places like this. Nearby "slackline" and "snowboard" practice ranges. Good luck, future Olympians! Obuse is a quaint town in Nagano Prefecture that is easily reachable by train from the capital city, Nagano. Known for its peaceful and picturesque ambiance, Obuse has been gaining popularity among locals seeking day-trip destinations. One of the town's highlights is the Hokusai Museum, which showcases the works of renowned artist Hokusai. Additionally, Obuse is famous for its chestnuts and has a rich history with them dating back to the Edo period.
Surrounded by the most magnificent mountains and where the Japanese artist Hokusai spent his later life. There are two museums that are a must, Hokusai and Taki Kazan.

Pretty popular lunch spot in Obuse. It took us over an hour to wait to get seated for lunch at 1330. The food is served French cuisine style so in very dainty portions. After or while waiting for orders, guests can walk around the restaurant’s garden. They also have Alfresco dining and allow pets. The staff were accommodating by promptly providing hot water to make formula, and supplying us with a high chair for the baby as soon as we sat down. Parking is available at the Tsuruya supermarket just down the road.

I'm fine with anything as long as it tastes good, but I didn't like the taste either. It also has a strong sense of cheapness. A soup similar to raw ramen from the supermarket with a slight sesame flavor added to it. With the addition of sweet meat miso, it tastes just like you can imagine. Renge Shokudo and Hidakaya seem to be offering this flavor for a limited time only. Surprisingly, the seaweed went well with this flavor. The dumplings also look like they come from a Chinese chain restaurant. It has a unique cinnamon-like cooling sensation, but it has almost no essential flavor. Is there sauce? Is this completed as a gyoza? I was disappointed because I don't use too much sauce. I guess people who like it can't stand it...However, if you ask me if it's attractive enough to attract new customers, I'd have to say it's not. Come here for all things chestnut! Chestnut paste, chestnut pastries, chestnut pies, etc. Everything we bought was very delicious. The packaging is very fancy too.

A long-established Japanese confectionery specialty store located in Obuse, a famous chestnut producing area. Chestnut Yokan and Chestnut Shikanoko have long been familiar souvenirs. You can buy them at major department stores, but a visit to the main store will give you a taste of the passion that has gone into making these confections.

(Translated by Google) I've received Sakurai Kanseido's chestnut yokan as a gift several times, but this was my first time visiting the store. The store is very spacious, and the sign on the right side of the entrance clearly conveys the store's passion for chestnuts, or rather, Sakurai Kanseido's commitment to chestnuts, as seen in the accompanying text: "As long as the chestnuts are fresh, that's all that matters." Today, I bought chestnut yokan and chestnut dorayaki. The chestnut yokan had just the right amount of sweetness, making the most of the chestnut flavor. I think it's the perfect sweet treat for tea. The chestnut dorayaki had a very moist crust, and the bean paste, while I imagined it would be azuki bean-like in color, was a slightly greenish color, making it another elegant treat that brought out the chestnut flavor. There's plenty of parking nearby, so it's easy to get there by car. Their autumn rakugan (rakugan) are delicious, of course, but they also have cute chestnut-shaped monaka (sweet chestnut wafers) with a rich, delicious chestnut filling. Their top recommendation is the new chestnut tea-cloth squeezed into a smooth, squeezed-out chestnut, which is only available during the limited time the chestnuts are in season! This product is made by squeezing the smooth chestnuts, and it has none of the alcoholic flavor of chestnut kinton (sweet chestnut paste). It's so delicious, it tastes like you're eating the smooth chestnut itself. It has a three-day shelf life and must be refrigerated, so it can't be purchased online or in other stores. A box of five goes for just over 1,500 yen. They don't make a lot, and they're sold out when they're gone, so when I arrive in Obuse, I always bring an insulated bag and head there first to buy some. It also makes a great souvenir! Roasted chestnuts are sold very cheaply in front of the shop. Sake brewery
Masuichi-Ichimura Sake Brewery is a renowned brewery in Obuse with deep roots in the area. They offer tasting sets for purchase and accept credit cards. The sake, although on the expensive side, is sold in smaller 500mL bottles. The traditional brewing methods result in delicious tasting sake, especially the junmaidaiginjo variety. Visitors can enjoy a bar to taste different sakes and have the option of purchasing fancy packaged sakes as gifts.
It was a wonderful place to taste sake, we were the only customers here at that time. This place produces sake brewed in wooden vats that is unavailable at ordinary retail shops. The brewery's numerous brands are available for drinking at a bar counter. Sake tasting is quite cheap for a 60ml shot, around ¥200-350 for each shot depending on the quality of the sake chosen. There are some special ones like the cloudy and certain sake that can only be drunk at that temperature, so you can’t buy it back home. Our favourite is the Hekiiken which we bought back.

Nihonnoakari Museum, situated in the heart of Obuse town, offers a fascinating exploration of Japanese lighting history. The museum showcases an extensive collection of vintage light fixtures, lamps, and memorabilia that provide insight into the evolution of lighting in Japan. Visitors can marvel at ancient lamps like lanterns, canteras, torches, and bent bamboo while learning about the transition to kerosene lamps and modern electric lights.
Located in the heart of Obuse. Very unique and well laid out museum about Japanese lighting through the years. From burning torches to sophisticated automatically refilling oil lamps. The variety of the collection is very interesting to see and there are basic English translations with most items. The gift shop has many items but my favorite were the beautiful candles.
Brian R — Google review
Most people come in the neighbourhood to enjoy ski slopes and the snow monkey park. So did we, 4th time in the neighborhood, but 1st time to discover Obuse and its wide museum lineup. Although minor, the japanese lighting museum offers a historical overview of lighting in Japan with some detailed explanation on the inner workings and manufacturing. Since very little explanation is available in english, better to visit with a Japanese-speaking acquaintance.
Marco S — Google review
A charming little stop off, little to no interpretation in English but still a nice browse through historical lamps and lighting from traditional to mid century Japanese. Also interesting to see how classic Japanese paper lanterns are made. Worth a quick look round if you like design and interiors but wouldn’t travel to Obuse just to see this.

(Translated by Google) This museum is quietly located in Obuse Town, across from the main store of the chestnut confectionery shop, Chikufudo. Nagano Prefecture is apparently home to three lighting museums, and this one showcases how humans have mastered the art of lighting. It clearly shows the history of how humans first began to use fire after lightning strikes and other events, and then used it for lighting in addition to cooking food. Then, they invented torches, candles, and lanterns, then lamps and electric lights for constant use. I learned that Nagano Prefecture's abundant timber led to the thriving art of jigsaw making, and that Obuse was famous for cultivating rapeseed, extracting oil from it, and shipping it to Edo (now Tokyo) from the Edo period through the Meiji era (1603-1868), for use in lanterns. Old lighting tools, such as candlesticks, lanterns, paper lanterns, mouse-shaped short poles, and lamps, are lined up on display. The mouse-shaped short poles are adorable. 💕 There's a reproduction exhibition room at the back of the first floor, where the room's lighting switches between candles, lanterns, lamps, and modern electric lights, allowing you to experience the difference in brightness. It made me think, isn't it really unnecessarily bright these days? The special exhibition on the second floor this time was the "Light of Stories" exhibition, aimed at children over the summer vacation. It runs until Tuesday, November 25th. The exhibit features a selection of old tales and fairy tales that depict light, such as "Kachi Kachi Yama," "The Red Candle and the Mermaid," and Andersen's "The Tinderbox." It was a realization that so many of the nostalgic tales I read as a child have something to do with light. I was also happy to see an exhibition of ukiyo-e prints depicting light. Opening Hours: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM, Closed Wednesdays (Open every day in August, October, and November). Admission Fee: 500 yen for adults, free for elementary and junior high school students. Nestled in the heart of Obuse, the Takai Kouzan Memorial Hall is a beautifully remodeled former residence that pays homage to the multifaceted life of Takai Kozan. This cultural gem not only revitalizes the town center but also offers visitors a glimpse into Japan's rich history during the late Edo period. As a prominent merchant, painter, calligrapher, and thinker, Kozan interacted with notable figures like Katsushika Hokusai and Sakuma Shozan.
Stillness fills the air with creativity. I loved this place. While wandering around the local area l came across the museum. It's absolutely beautiful, l was the only person visiting so had the place to myself. I really enjoyed exploring the house and felt at ease. There is a musical instrument that you can kneel down and play. (l tried to find out what it's called.) I sat in the ground enjoying the silence and the nature of the museum. It's full of history and well worth a visit. Has limited parking, toilet and a shop, also free tea you can sit and take in the atmosphere. We'll worth a visit. I wasn't allowed to take photos, so will post some of the local surroundings so you get the feel of the atmosphere of the area thus building quietly sits. Ps... There are lots of local gardens open to the public.

I hesitated at first to pay the 300 yen admission, but it was well worth it. This is a small part of the family estate of the man who was Hokusai's patron and an accomplished artist in his own right. The grounds are small but well-kept, the small collection of artwork is interesting, and the building that served as his study is wonderful to explore. Doesn't take a whole lot of time either, so convenient to fit into a visit to Obuse.

(Translated by Google) This museum occupies the former residence of Takai Kozan, head of the Takai family, who was born and raised in Obuse during the late Edo period. He studied academics and art in Kyoto and Edo. He is known for his connections with thinkers like Sakuma Shozan during the late Edo period, his wealth as a wealthy farmer-merchant providing relief to the poor, his cultural activism led to the invitation of his friend Katsushika Hokusai to Obuse, and his dedication to education during the Meiji Restoration. Visitors can see the remains of the residence visited by late Edo period patriots and Hokusai, the library displaying Kozan's calligraphy and paintings, and the storehouse that housed the Kamimachi festival float known for Hokusai's "Raging Waves" (currently on display at the Hokusai Museum). The exhibition "Kozan's Monsters, Flowers, Birds, and Plants" is running in the storehouse and grain storehouse until Wednesday, November 12th. The flower, bird, and plant paintings that Kozan studied under Hokusai are realistic and vibrant. The yokai drawings he continued to paint in his later years were fascinating, featuring unique yokai that seem to have possessed nature or objects. About a 10-minute walk from Obuse Station on the Nagano Electric Railway. Open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Closed during the New Year holidays and when other exhibits are being changed. Admission is 300 yen for adults. An event called "Kōzan's Yokai Night" will be held on Saturday, September 6, 2025. Takai Kōzan Memorial Museum, Hokusai Museum, and Japanese Light Museum will be open free of charge at night. Visitors can enjoy food stalls selling shaved ice and other items, as well as a yokai contest (makeup and costume contest). Visited on August 19, 2025 (Original)

During the final days of the Tokugawa shogunate, he worked tirelessly for the peace and prosperity of his homeland and country. He likely had extensive connections with many of Japan's leading thinkers, including Sakuma Shozan, and literati such as Katsushika Hokusai. He was also a painter, and his paintings and writings are on display at this memorial museum. It struck me how these remarkable people supported Japan's modernization from behind the scenes. Chestnut Alley

Chestnut Alley is a hidden gem located off Dainichi-dori Street in Obuse. The alley exudes an elegant ambiance, with traditional warehouses converted into shops selling local chestnut confectioneries. The path connecting the Hokusai Museum to the Takai Kozan Memorial Museum is made of thinned Obuse chestnut wood, creating a tranquil atmosphere with chestnut trees lining the way.
We come here on snowy day in January 2025. Obuse is such a gem with everything we expected for a japanese town. No tourist.

I feel like there might be more on offer in the area in the other non-winter seasons. It made for a pleasant stroll after the museum and it was nice to see that many homes in the area are part of an “open garden” scheme where you can see their gardens. Nice enough area with some interesting cafes and souvenir shops.

A short leisure alley that you can stroll along and find fallen chestnuts on the ground.

It's ok. Just an alley and I didn't see any chestnut trees or anything that would make it worth going out of one's way to find, but if you are visiting the Kozan Memorial Hall, then it is right outside it.

(Translated by Google) I had some time before the Hokusai Museum opened, so I decided to walk along this path while exploring the surrounding area. It's a place that has been used as a filming location for several TV dramas and other events, and I've always wanted to go there. It was early after the Obon festival, so there was no one around and it was a very quiet path. I saw some fallen chestnuts and couldn't help but take a photo. As the name Chestnut Path suggests, it's a place that really exudes charm. The Obuse Museum丨Nakajima Chinami Museum showcases the exquisite Japanese paintings of Chinami Nakajima. The permanent exhibition features stunning folding screen paintings depicting old cherry trees, each with unique and wonderful details. Additionally, the museum currently presents works by three painters from Tokyo University of the Arts, including beautiful depictions of bicycles, strings, and animals. The museum's location offers a serene atmosphere with a garden adorned with various trees leading to the entrance.
Beautiful collection of contemporary art, well displayed. Reasonably priced gift shop with small cafe. We loved the big bold colourful works in their latest exhibition. Well worth a visit!

(Translated by Google) July 2025 The garden leading up to the museum is beautiful. The grass garden is deep green in the summer, and the colorful flowers planted there create a striking sight. The museum houses many metal sculptures by Haruyama. The titles and actual works are completely different, which is a bit surprising. To be honest, I wasn't particularly interested in the metal artworks. There were also many paintings by Chinami Nakajima, and her paintings of cherry blossoms and peonies were particularly impressive. Photography was prohibited here. There were also floats on display, and the detailed carvings around and decorating the floats were a sight to behold. It was a truly wonderful museum. The exhibits are changed three times a year, and the "Summer Nakajima Chinami Exhibition" and the "Haruyama Bunten Exhibition" were held at the museum in commemoration of the honorary citizen of the town. Both artists are artists with ties to Obuse Town, and they sketch and paint flowers such as peonies on site, using brushwork that instantly depicts the individual flowers vividly. On the other hand, Haruyama Bunten is an artist who expresses aluminum castings. The monuments at the rotary in front of Obuse Station and at Obuse General Park are Haruyama's works. The museum is impressive as it displays and stores such art pieces. There is a gallery on the second floor, and there is an elevator, so it is barrier-free. Ramen restaurant
Takesan Ramen Obuse offers a variety of ramen options, including vegan choices such as vegan ramen and vegan gyoza. The vegan ramen is incredibly tasty and provides a unique dining experience. While the vegan gyoza may not be the most delicious, it's still a rare opportunity to enjoy this dish at a restaurant. The staff is friendly and helpful, creating a pleasant atmosphere.
What a great find in Obuse. The restaurant has different options for ramen. We had a pork and vegan ramen. It was absolutely delicious. It's a cosy, small restaurant with counter seats. I really enjoyed the atmosphere. Both our dishes were under 1000yen. Would definitely recommend this restaurant if you are in Obuse.

Don't let the Google ratings fool you on this one ! When we got there at 1330hrs the car park was full ! They apparently close at 1430 until the dinner service. Predominantly local crowd, good sign. English menu available( but the ordering machine has no translation). Interestingly, the Donabe Miso Tonkotsu has a choice of "rich" and "light" broth. Not telling which I ordered but I don't think it would have made a difference. They would have been both great. Another interesting note. The noodles are the round yellow egg type noodles you would commonly find in the rest of SE Asia. It will be cooked al dente, uncommon in SE Asia. The TanTan Men broth states its spicy. If you're from SEA and used to a little more heat, you might have to bring your own chili oil. This broth is unique in that it has an almost peanut flavor to it ! Finally, it's all served in a claypot. If you don't slurp it all up in 15 minutes like most locals, know that it'll remain hot for far longer than you remain hungry. To finish, a shout out to the helpful and friendly staff for helping these clueless foreigners ( the ordering machine does not accept "new" series Japanese yen notes).

Fantastic ramen shop in Obuse. Ordering is done from a machine, and if yo ur Japanese isn't good there is a printed English menu to help you navigate the screen. The broths come in light or rich, and it's nice to be able to customize that along with toppings. The tonkotsu is superb and the gyoza are perfectly fried. Everything was delicious. Highest recommendation!!

(Translated by Google) My daughter sought this restaurant out for a family birthday lunch. When I came here, I wanted to try the thick-sliced pork loin cutlet set, but it took about 25 minutes to cook, so I gave up! I ordered the regular loin cutlet set. However, even though it's normal, it's quite a thick loin cutlet and very soft. You can customize the taste with sauce, salt, and miso. Also, the rice was cooked to be firm to my liking, which made me excited⤴️ Even though it was a bit much for me, who hasn't been eating much lately, it all came out clean and refreshing. Thank you for the delicious time. It was a good birthday party. (Translated by Google) The huge fillet cutlet set fried by the master is highly recommended. It's a remnant of what was originally a pork cutlet shop. It's really a huge volume. For those who want to enjoy meals This is a restaurant that I would like to recommend. Payment is cash only, There were only 2-3 parking spaces next to the store. I'll upload the ones that shocked me. First of all, my first time trying Yamaudo pickled in soy sauce. It's a lot of homemade miso. I served it with fillet cutlet and steamed vegetables. It was also my first time to experience disposable hand towels wrapped in washi paper. Chopsticks have tapered ends These are polite chopsticks. Is it Yoshino? Connecting ingredients for appetizer (squid appetizer) I enjoyed the delicacy of the jelly. Rich chestnut sauce Panna cotta is also very satisfying. Strong coffee with Obuse milk It's also perfect to add plenty of it. The rice is said to be Koshihikari from Nozawa Onsen Village. Something like the thoughts of the food creator It was a meal that arrived quickly. Suzuhana creates a rich, modern Japanese space. JR Kyushu sightseeing train, Yufuin Onsen, etc. It was created by Eiji Mitooka. The hand rest and chair in the middle of the stairs are gentle. I fell in love with the beauty of the curves. Although it may seem expensive at first glance, From the actual experience of food and space, Fair price, plenty of everything I felt that there was enough quantity and it was cheap. This is a restaurant that I want to come back to when I go to Obuse.
