Toraja Heritage Hotel

Mentioned on
1 list
Hotel
Resort hotel
The Toraja Heritage Hotel offers a blend of traditional and modern accommodation options, including spacious tongkonan-style houses and a contemporary hotel block. The property features an outdoor pool, spa facilities, and a restaurant. Guests can enjoy the serene surroundings with beautiful mountain and valley views. Despite some minor issues like occasional hot water outages, the polite and helpful staff contribute to a pleasant stay. Many visitors appreciate the buffet breakfast with plenty of options, including standout croissant bread.
Place with good vibe…a little bit old and need renovation but still i love it..good food in the restaurant..high level service…

Hotel was nice. Big room and big bathroom as well. They have outdoor shower, bathtub and toilet separated with the door👍🏻 Breakfast not best but still ok. The location is not too close to the main street with the bumpy road, it has small kiosk near the street in case you guys need something stuffs to buy. Note : make sure to close your room doors or windows if you don’t want to get mosquitoes inside the room especially in the evening.
Der S — Google review
This hotel has seen better days many years ago...  If I looked at the reception desk, it was part of a French hotel chain before local entrepreneurs took over. The gardens are beautiful and tidy.  The rooms are large, the bathroom is also gigantic. However, everything is badly neglected..., not so much in the rooms.  But in the restaurant, the walls are disgusting, the tablecloths are dirty and full of holes. The service in the restaurant is incredibly slow and the food is far from good, tasty quality. It is a gross exaggeration to say that this is a 4 star hotel by international criteria.  It deserves 3 stars at most. Based on the above experience, we got pretty poor value for our money. And the current owners should start a comprehensive renovation programme as soon as possible.
Zoltán M — Google review
A medium good hotel if you want to visit Toraja. But a bit far from Lolai, Kete Kesu and To'tombi and others tourist spot. But if you just want to stay to see Tongkonan House, there are lots replica of Tongkonan house in the Toraja Heritage Hotel. Good scenery and fresh air... Hotel nya cukup bagus dengan desain yang cukup tua.
Ananda D — Google review
Big big hotel in a nice area, on top of a hill (which means a 800m walk down to the town) with rooms in toraja style houses. Room was spacious and clean had Hot water with even an outside shower, nice touch. Rooms did need some maintenance. For example, Electrical sockets where hanging and a closet door was completly loose. Food was OK. For the 'luxury' this hotel is going for, it should be better. Pool is big and cleaned twice a day. This hotel again requires maintenance, but then again it doesnt receive a lot of guests. We were completely alone on 2 days (10th of september). It was also very weird to see all the breakfast items to be out on the table, unused. Remnants from the good times, I guess? The price for Sulawesi is too steep considering everything. 4 stars relative to the rest of Sulawesi (what we encountered so far).
Mischa8890 — Google review
This hotel have etnic style called Tongkonan house. The room quite good, bad quite confort, have bathup. Restaurant offering local food. Overall is good but nothing special from this hotel. Need took arround 1km from main road. Hope this hotel can provide more hightech hotel style and confortable service.
Aher — Google review
As noted in other reviews, there is some maintenance to be done to the buildings. It is clearly starting to show its age. The room was spacious, quiet and the bed was comfortable. The staff were friendly and quick to respond on Whatsapp. A good pick when travelling to Tana Toraja.
Stijn B — Google review
I stayed for three nights and really liked this place. The buildings are old, but have a cool charm and the grounds are surrounded by beautiful trees and views of mountains and valleys. The pool was big and is hardly used during the day (since most of the people visiting here will be out touring) and the buffet breakfast had plenty of options. TV is local only, and sometimes the hot water went out, but that's not a big issue for me. The staff and front desk girl were all very polite and helpful. The hotel is located far from anything though, so I suggest you either eat there at night time or bring food back to your room because I don't think there is anything else within reasonable walking distance. If I return to Toraja, I will definitely stay here again!!

Cafe Aras

$$$$affordable
Cafe
Cafe Aras is a Halal restaurant that serves excellent food. The atmosphere is clean and friendly, and the staff are welcoming and accommodating. There's one across the street with the same name but different menu, but I believe they serve the same great food.
food was okay. the butterscotch pancake was good but the pork steak is kinda hard to bite & cut. but the taste was actually good. the orange juice was good too. i really love the ambience and interior of the place, specially the ornaments. and also many tourists eat here.
Rosy D — Google review
It's a cool and clean place. A nice artistic cafe with souvenirs shop. Coffee was good. Service was excellent. The bartender and cashier know exactly what i want for my coffee and gave me exactly what I want To be fair, i couldn't give them 5 star (yet) because I haven't tried their food. I won't hesitate to give them 5 stars whenever I've tried their food and satisfied by them.
Evi Y — Google review
The design of the cafe is gorgeous! A lovely mix of art and culture, the coffee was delicious !! The wait staff left a little to be desired and the food was average at best. Good sized portions though !
Angie R — Google review
A chilled arty farty vibe where you can escape from the chaos on the street to eat and drink well. Vegan options available - no dairy (cheese, milk), no meat, no fish, no eggs (plants only based dishes). Kind staff, quality tasty food, good sized portions at reasonable prices. Thank you Cafe Aras - you make two hungry vegans very happy x

Modern styled coffee and restaurant place. Clean and good facilities. Mainly tourist come here. But the food is good and service as well. Also they sell some souvenirs. Good option to eat at, if you want Indonesian food but if you don’t want plastic chairs at a food stand
Ohad G — Google review
The local guide brought me here for lunch and it was one of his best decision! The food served was very nice. As a matter of fact, the Nasi Goreng served here was probably the best I had during my entire trip to Indonesia. The decor is simple but very pleasing to the eye. The young waitress who took the order was was very friendly and cheerful. It didn't take long for the food to arrive and it was delicious and the portions quite large. Similarly with the dessert, the portion could feed a small family! Definitely a must visit restaurant if you are ever in the area ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Alexander F — Google review
The food was lovely and the service was very good too. There are plenty of options in the menu. At this restaurant you can find Indonesian food and special dishes of Toraja. We went twice for diner and the place was full of tourists, including families with children.

I think the noodles are less mature & still too hard to serve. but for other food my friend said it has good taste. the place is nice, clean, the bathroom is clean there are elements of ethnic Toraja in every corner. Love it!

Restaurant
Rimiko Restaurant is a delightful culinary gem that promises an unforgettable dining experience. Guests rave about the delicious food and inviting atmosphere, making it a perfect spot for dinner. The menu features a variety of dishes, including flavorful pumpkin soup and fresh salads like avocado tomato salad and chicken with green beans in sesame dressing. Seafood lovers can enjoy the grilled ikan mas bakar, while vegetarians will appreciate the wonderful vegetable curry among other options.
Dinner with 2 kind of pa’piong, rice, 2 salads and 3 large beer - 320 000 only. Very fast WiFi. Good atmosphere. Order pa’piong 2 hours before the dinner. Chicken pa’piong is my choice - very tender and tasty.
Elena S — Google review
Delicious food, great vibe! We had a lovely dinner here — everything was super tasty. The pumpkin soup (small portion but flavorful), two fresh and healthy salads: the avocado tomato salad and the chicken with green beans and sesame dressing were all great. My partner had the ikan mas bakar (grilled fish) and loved it. But the highlight was definitely the chicken curry — the best we’ve had in all of Indonesia! Defenetly recomend this. The place has a cozy bamboo design with plenty of seating, the staff is friendly, and the prices are very reasonable. We really enjoyed it and will definitely be back!

Finally a Restaurant with a variety of vegetarian dishes! Wonderful vegetable curry. Also lots of meat/fish dishes (can‘t comment on that since I‘m vegetarian). Friendly owner! We came multiple times during our stay in Rantepao.
Lena L — Google review
Very good food! Compliments to the woman who served us. She was also the one that made the food, so we had to wait a while, but it was worth it!
Daniël V — Google review
A dusty, old themed restaurant & cafe. Strict parking lot. Pricey menus, not that delicious. The one next door is way better basically. This one is more focused on traditional cuisines. Less local beverages variants.

Pia's Poppies Toraya

Hotel
Car rental agency
Restaurant
Pia's Poppies Toraya is a modest hotel in Toraja that offers a charming eatery and basic accommodations with balcony access. It provides a convenient location near the main road for easy transportation options. The staff is friendly, and they have motorbikes available for rent at reasonable rates. In addition, local guides are available outside the hotel to offer Toraja tour services. The rooms are clean and reasonably priced at 150000 per night.
Stayed here last week with a group of friends. The rooms were clean and tidy. The meal portions were huge for Indonesians, it was very filling. We also had dinner at the hotel, it was such a nice meal. It should be noted that dinner should be ordered early as soon as the kitchen open (at 6 pm), as they’ll take time to prepare the means as it is made from scratch. Overall, a warm and pleasant experience for a family-run hotel.
Melania N — Google review
All good-we stayed here two nights- lovely staff, nice place. The only reason we didn’t extend and went to another hotel is a couple of things. The first being there is no a/c-yes it’s Rantepao so it’s not hot-but in the day it is in the room. Even a fan would have helped!!! Secondly, the room was a bit of a hike. And thirdly, a lot of loud dogs and family there. Other then that, all good.
Googlereviewser88 — Google review
Food: we ate 3 times at Pia‘s Poppies and the food was always fantastic! We can especially recommend the rendang, spaghetti bolognaise, pia‘s favorite soup. The food took a long time because they prepare everything freshly, so order before you get really hungry. Room: the room was very clean and spacious. There was no warm water in the shower.
Anna F — Google review
Really lovely hotel. The facilities were very clean and nice. There is a good communal area that you can get food and drinks at but also just relax and use the WiFi. The staff are super friendly with Dila (who helped us in the daytime) and Mina (who helped in the evening) both having very good English. Overall an amazing value hotel with very good food for a decent price.
Alice C — Google review
Great, kind and helpful staff. Spacious, rooms (some with a great view!). The kitchen is great and fast and location close to whatever you might need (including coffee roasting place). Great price/quality ratio. PS. There is no aircon but that is not a problem as the temperature regulates itself through the top windows. In the morning there is a serenade from local rooster, pigs, dogs and more so have your earplugs with you and it’s not an issue.
Marcin K — Google review
It's a nice place, spacious rooms. Service is excellent as well as the menu. Just the bathroom was not so great. The toilet fountain was broken and the shower didn't really get warm. Still, had a really good stay here!
Laurence K — Google review
One of the best experiences in indonesia. The rooms and facilities are super nice. The family is exceptionally friendly. They additionally sell really good coffee and make really good food. Definitely recommended!!
Pratik K — Google review
A beautiful little haven, with a restaurant area and gardens with plenty of tables and chairs to sit and relax. My room was a little on the tired side, but looks like they are working on giving all the rooms a little refresh, the stone features in the bathroom are a fun touch. The manager/owner is a good source of information and will find out answers for questions she doesn’t yet know. The younger staff aren’t quite so knowledgeable or efficient yet. I asked the receptionist about the tour shown on the website but it seems this doesn’t exist. There are guides that hang out by the entrance offering tours and treks of the local area. Only ate one meal at the restaurant which was one of the local dishes, and recommended to order at least 2 hours in advance it was delicious, but when ordering dinner keep in mind that the meals are cooked fresh to order and they tend to cook one or two meals at a time, so consider preordering or be prepared to wait a while.

Rumah Makan Ayam Penyet Ria

$$$$affordable
Ayam penyet restaurant
Chicken restaurant
If you're on a culinary adventure in Indonesia, make sure to stop by Ayam Penyet Ria, located at Jalan Ahmad Yani Number 88 in Rantepao. This halal-certified eatery is perfect for both lunch and dinner, offering a diverse menu that caters to various tastes, including vegetarian options like Cap Chaisim and Toreng Goreng served with Nasi Putih. The ambiance is spacious enough for groups, complemented by ample parking facilities.
One of our favarite restaurants in Rantepao. Clean, friendly and tasty food.
Marco L — Google review
Nice to find a local food place that has vegetarian items on the menu. I ordered the Cap Chaisim and Toreng Goreng (fried eggplant) with Nasi Putih (white rice). It was tasty and a good price. Just be careful, the sambal that came with the Toreng Goreng had fish in it, but I easily ate around it. They also provided another chilli sauce which was vegetarian.

Have quite wide place to eat also the parking area, so it's good for groups. They have many menu, I choose fried noodle. They also have clean restrooms & wastafel. They have souvenir shop with many various items even postcard. Open from morning 'till night.

The legendary "Ayam Penyet Ria" opened their restaurant years ago in Rantepao, and it's been there ever since. Recommended dish: Ayam penyet, soto ayam.

the menu offers a lot of food choices, but the taste isn't special. They also sell canned crispy fried onion for IDR40.000/can (aproximately 250gr??). I like it, you must try!
Gie S — Google review
It's a nice place to found this chicken kampung so big.

Rumah Makan Saruran

$$$$affordable
Chinese restaurant
If you're on the hunt for a delightful dining experience in Rantepao, look no further than Rumah Makan Saruran. This cozy eatery specializes in both Chinese and Indonesian cuisine, offering a menu that includes options like pangsit noodles with or without pork. Known for its friendly service and generous portions, it's a favorite among locals who appreciate good food at affordable prices. While you savor your meal—perhaps sharing dishes with friends—the restaurant also provides complimentary welcome crackers to start your culinary journey.
Food are delicious. Big portion for us that can share with 2 or 3 people. The restaurant served pork.
Phoebe Y — Google review
It was dirty when we came. Food on the floor, under the table and some sweet drops on the table, which attracted big ants. Ants also ran on my legs. The restaurant advertises itself as Chinese, but mostly serves Indonesian food. The dishes I ordered were very good, though.
Anton K — Google review
I believe this restaurant name Raja Babi when I visited years ago. The portion is humongous.
Raymond U — Google review
Friendly service and delicious food. Seems popular with locals as one of the nicer places in town. FYI for tourists: it does not serve alcohol.

Monika Cafe & Resto

Restaurant
I dined at Monika Cafe & Resto, which offers both indoor and outdoor seating areas. The indoor space features a small stage for karaoke, while the outdoor patio is covered. Although the indoor area was bustling with customers enjoying the karaoke, we were seated in the quieter outdoor section due to its popularity. The service was prompt and friendly, and while only a couple of tables were occupied outside, the restaurant inside was packed and lively.
Delicous Soto Ayam. Nice place for everybody:they offer traditional food (very nice) as well as western food. A solo singer accompanies your meal with western oldies😉
Yanick K — Google review
From outside, the restaurant looks nice. Big but quite empty (maybe we were quite late, we thought). When we came in, we felt immediately, we weren’t welcome. The first attempt of the food we wanted from quite long list of foods aren’t available. Eventually, there are 2-4 foods are available. We ordered nasi capcay and buffalo steak. The steak was full of nerves that none of us couldn’t eat 😭 If you read this, better go somewhere else. Especially, if you come to town in a low season like us. We ended up order food from another place because we were still starving.
Anisa S — Google review
Went to this place for dinner one night. There are a couple of seating areas. One is indoors where there is a small stage set aside for karaoke. The other is a covered outdoor patio. The indoor area seemed to be quite full that night so we were seated in the outdoor patio. The service is friendly and quite quick. The outdoor area just had a couple of tables occupied whereas the indoor restaurant was full and everyone in there seemed to be having fun because the karaoke was in full swing. After reading some of the other reviews on here we ordered a few dishes. The portions were large however, the taste was not up to par. In fact, it was quite disappointing to say the least. The ambience and friendliness of the staff and owners was excellent ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Alexander F — Google review
Visited Monika cafe last night. Ordered Chicken Sate and Sweet sour Calamari. Meals were small in size. Sate was just chicken without any sauce. Chicken was overcooked and stuck to Skewers. Calamari was a bit tough. Service wasn't great. They seemed to be lacking staff I had to go into kitchen to place order. Place looked ok. Music was good. Overall food was bit pricey and not that tasty.
Kevin L — Google review
Staying at family's house in ToBarana. This place is quite famous for the family, so they take me here. What I like the most is the live music, in which you can request a song(s) and sing along. The food is not that good. They also serve beers and open until late at night. . When I was there, so many menus are not available, both the food and drink.
Tia — Google review
At 5pm we were obviously a bit early… Had much friendlier staff in Indonesia so far. The place however is nice and clean. Of course you shouldn’t have a Pizza here in the Highlands. We know. But after months of traveling we just ordered one which was a mistake. Pizza and beer are really expensive here. You’re probably better off with Indonesian style food and drink.
Ralf W — Google review
Monika is the perfect place if you are ok to wait 2h30 (!!!!) to get half of your order. My friend did not eat and we just left.
Jean T — Google review
I gave this a 5-star on my first visit. Food was great, environment was pleasant. I returned the next night, and WHAT A CHANGE! The food was bad (same dishes, but did not taste even remotely like night before). There was a musician in this tiny restaurant with an amplifier turned to full volume -- and he wasn't even singing! When he took a smoke on stage, the music continued. He was just playing a tape and mouthing the song. TERRIBLE. I will definitely never give this junk a third try. :(

Satay restaurant
Raja Babi Waroenk is a bustling gem located in Toraja, known for its mouthwatering array of dishes that cater to both halal and non-halal preferences. This cozy eatery may not boast an expansive space, but it makes up for it with delicious offerings at reasonable prices. Diners rave about the tender pork belly and succulent ribs, alongside delightful options like fruit salad and babi kecap.
We tried their fruit salad, pork satay, babi kecap. And we love their food.
Fitria A — Google review
One of the most crowded restaurants in Toraja. They serve various halal and nonhalal food, and also alcohol. The food is delicious and not too pricey. For those who are nonhalal food's addict should try it. :) And yes, the place itself isn't too wide, so the seat are limited and you should wait when the holiday time comes.

One of the most crowded restaurant but, the Queue system is terrible. The service is terrible, but the food taste is Superb. Really love the pork ribs.

Warung Pong Buri'

$$$$affordable
Restaurant
If you're looking to indulge in genuine local Torajan cuisine, then visiting this renowned eatery called Warung Pong Buri' should be on your agenda. It has gained significant popularity among the locals, known for always being packed with a long queue of Torajans who crave the nostalgic flavors of their hometown. Despite its somewhat lacking cleanliness due to its traditional nature, the food is still presented nicely and tastes exceptionally delicious.
THE PLACE is a MUST TRY. It's always busy and must be the best place to eat super delicious local food. Just check what others are eating and point on that. The seat you, bring you rice and the food you ordered, there is a fridge as well. Even ice cold beers are available and accompanying this delicious food perfectly. Our favourite were the pork dishes. Fatty Pork cubes with the special black powder spice cooked in a banana leaf in bamboo or the long stewed pork chunks in broth. Both a heaven for pork eaters. Also the special pork soup with peanuts is a very delicious treat. The duck was seasoned very well, but a bit boney. The innards are also super delicious. We came three times in a week and recommend to be there before noon, as it can get very crowded. For dinner there might be not much left over. Great value for the money as well. Warning: The Sambal might come straight out of hell, as it is made with the special Toraja Chili, which is the second spiciest chilis in the world. Try it carefully, but it's super delicious! Everything was perfect and the people are all very patient and helpful.
Marcel C — Google review
A must go place for Torajan cuisine but it’s just not to my liking. But just give it a try, who knows, it might be for you.
Mabel G — Google review
Recommended local cuisine. I ordered Pamarasan Pork which is generously sized and Brenebon Soup, rice, plus local brew Tuak/Ballo, all cost less than 50k. In general the food is too salty for my taste. I think best to eat single meat with rice, unless you eat for sharing.
Vic E — Google review
A good place to try local food. Try pamerassan: meat cooked in a thick, black sauce made from the dried seeds of the kluwek fruit.
Sjors H — Google review
A famous authentic place to eat Torajan's food. If you like to eat and try something new, you should taste their foods..!! But I don't recommend Dendeng Babi because the meat was so hard to cut and chew (and salty too).

Food is tasty and cheap. You can add rice for free. The service is good. The place is too small and hot. There's no parking lot.

Best traditional Toraja Pork Cuisine !! They served this traditional kind of food, you should try Piong (Pork) - its a pork that cooked inside of a bamboo with spices and certain leaf. You can also try Pamerasan, a traditional soup (they served two kind of Pamerasan, fish and pork) I ordered Fish one (since I already got Pork Piong for meal)
Bram T — Google review
Best local taste in Rantepao. They have best local food called Pa'piong. It is pork chops cooked in a bamboo with banana leaves wrapping. They also have other foods like chicken, fish, and eel with local taste. If you are an adventurous foodie like me, you'll love it. Because they have a very unique taste even in a country with wide taste variety in Indonesia. Dont forget to try these foods with local chilli (tomato shaped chilli called 'katokon'). This kind of chilli also has a very unique taste. It might be too spicy for foreign tourist. They usually available in big or small scale restaurants in Toraja.

Lagaligo Bua Airport

Domestic airport
Regional airport
Lagaligo Bua Airport, located in the city of Palopo, South Sulawesi, is a small regional airport that serves as a convenient hub for travelers to and from the region. While it’s not a large airport, it offers basic facilities and a relatively smooth travel experience. The airport is well-maintained, with modern amenities such as a small café and waiting area. Though it’s less crowded than major airports, it provides easy access to Palopo and surrounding areas. Overall, Lagaligo Bua Airport is a functional and efficient gateway for domestic travel in South Sulawesi.
Yustika M — Google review
For a small airport, it's pretty good with basic facilities like restrooms, praying room, and food kiosk functioning well. A new terminal building has been developed and set to be operated soon. No belt conveyor available in the baggage claim which poses a risk of damaged luggage. Hopefully this won't happen again in the new terminal building. The runaway needs to be repaired and made more smoother so the aircraft won't have to experience unsteady and bouncy landing. The airport is currently serving 2 carriers, Garuda and Wings, both with ATR aircraft. From my experience, flights to and from this airport is always full. So I'm hoping that there will soon be an increase in the number of flights and carriers operating to and from this airport.

Great to have Palopo Makassar flights by Wings air every day for only 45 flight instead of 13 hour trip by car, keep on going and adding flights Lion Wings Air👍👍✌️

Small hub airport to Toraja, Mamuju and Luwu Timur. I tried flight to the Lagaligo airport when I have nickel project in Malili on last 2019 to make shortcut than I use a bus. Flight from Makassar to Palopo only once time around 9.30 WITA if it correct. So before you take this flight, first check your flight schedule if u not fly one times.

Torajan Land is definitely worth seeing (lovely people, beautiful place) but the airline TransNusa is cancelling most of the flights to this airport. So going there by plane is not reliable
