Changchun in 3 days

If you only have 3 days to spend in Changchun, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Changchun offers a mix of modern city life and 20th‑century history, most notably at the Puppet Emperor’s Palace Museum, which tells the story of the Manchukuo era. The city is also known as the cradle of China’s automotive industry, with museums and factory tours that highlight its industrial heritage. Nature lovers can explore Jingyuetan National Forest Park for lakeside walks, cycling, and winter sports, while the city’s cold, snowy winters bring seasonal ice and snow attractions. Throughout the year, you can sample hearty northeastern Chinese cuisine and experience a slower-paced, spacious cityscape compared with China’s coastal megacities.
With favorites like Jilin University, Shengli Park (East Gate), and 伪满皇宫博物院, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees.0 To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Airport
Changchun Longjia International Airport, located in northeastern China, is a hub that offers various amenities such as restaurants and a post office. It also provides high-speed rail service to Changchun. The airport is known for its cleanliness and modern facilities, with comfortable seating and helpful staff. Despite being relatively small, it offers a pleasant travel experience with smooth transactions and friendly service. Additionally, the airport features attractive decorations during Chinese New Year, adding to its welcoming ambiance.
Fantastic airport with many amenities and comfortable seating available. Very efficient customs and service that is expected of a Chinese airport. I just wish it were located closer to the city and with more car park spaces.

Jan '25. Flew in from Guangzhou. It's a very nice airport, clean , & efficient.
WaiTuck C — Google review
The one and only airport in Changchun. It is an international airport, however all of the announcements are in Chinese, no English at all, if you can't speak Chinese it will be a bit confusing if there is some changes, such as sudden boarding gate changes. The airport is clean, not much restaurants option in T2. The toilet is clean, lot of squat toilets with only one sit toilet.
Lala L — Google review
two terminals, the new one is a small but modern and well-planned airport, the old terminal is a bit less convenient, especially for international flights to Korea.
Old D — Google review
International airport but quite small, not capable of handling large amount of travellers and short of facilities that normal int'l airport has. The baggage claim is extra slow here. A new terminal is under construction, seems could help to relief the amount of tourists.

Nestled in the southeast suburbs of Changchun City, Jingyue Pool is a stunning reservoir that captivates visitors with its crescent shape. Jinyuetan (净月潭) National Forest Park in Changchun is a must-visit for families. For older kids and teens, the rope courses and tree-top adventures add an exciting challenge. With biking, paddle boating, a mini train ride, and fresh pine forest air, it’s the perfect natural playground for all ages. The endless pine forest and the clean, crisp air — a living reminder of God’s wonderful handiwork. As the psalmist writes, “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands” (Psalm 19:1). Surrounded by God’s creation, a place to treasure and to thank God for.

History Museums
The Museum at the Former Palace of the Puppet Manchurian Emperor is a historical institution that showcases calligraphy, paintings, and ceramics related to the Manchurian dynasty. This former residence of Puyi, the last emperor of Qing dynasty has been transformed into a magnificent museum that displays various aspects of his life including his study, bedrooms, temple, wife's quarters, opium den, and concubines' rooms.
1/3/2025 . A tick off my bucket list to visit this place , having watched “The Last Emperor” and endless documentaries and theories about the place. I am always very intrigued by the Qing dynasty that lasted 268 years. What does a toddler of 3 years old know about when he was being put on the throne.i think he must have felt that his country has betrayed by dethroning him. His life mission was to revive the dynasty that diminished in his hands. Was he a traitor? I personally felt not, he want to make regain the grounds that he has lost by making use of the Japanese. He did not expect to be a puppet. PuYi was married 5 times and have no offspring, considered both a public and private failure. But as a man, his life experience, the journey from an emperor to be a citizen was incredible!
Little D — Google review
In a vain attempt to stop the progress for history, Puyi the child emperor thought that collaboration with the Japanese might have been a good option. He lived a comfortable life that was probably better than many of the millions he nominally presided over, but he never had any real power.
Chin H — Google review
The Manchu Palace, also known as the Imperial Palace's subsidiary palace, located in Changchun, Jilin Province, is a magnificent and historically significant architectural complex that once served as the residence of Puyi, the last emperor of the Qing Dynasty. Built in 1934, during the Japanese occupation of Manchuria, the palace showcases a unique blend of traditional Manchu and modern Japanese architectural styles. As the former home of Puyi, the palace offers a fascinating glimpse into the life and times of China's last imperial ruler, and its opulent halls, chambers, and gardens evoke the grandeur and majesty of a bygone era. Today, the Manchu Palace is a museum and a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors from around the world with its rich history, stunning architecture, and poignant reminders of China's complex and tumultuous past.
Shaoping S — Google review
Well preserved historical place. The staff can give a tour with very detailed explanation.
Ben L — Google review
It's very interesting to see this style of architecture here in China. You can see the newer buildings behind these older homes, and the difference is shocking. There are quite a few buildings to walk through, including the living areas. The gardens are gorgeous. A must-see if you're in the Changchun area.
Kertney M — Google review
Very nice little palace with extensive grounds and beautiful gardens and detailed displays. It is also rather tourist friendly, with captions in English and Japanese as well. The tickets are also only around 20 RMB (approx. $3). However, the buildings are not like the Forbidden City in Beijing, it is relatively modern, considering it was built around 70 years ago. The main building is currently in renovation. The gardens are not like the traditional Chinese gardens, it is more Russian inspired with simple flora. If you want ancient displays, this place only displays artifacts within the age of 100 years, and they are more Russian. It is very close to the Changchun Light Rail, and a museum and small Russian shopping center is also within the grounds. Overall, this is place is good for a nice stroll or a quick visit.
Jonathan — Google review
The Chinese government has restored and maintained this place very well. I have a special interest in modern Chinese history and ,therefore, I was totally immersed into the audio narration guide. However, I would recommend side readings to get a clearer picture of the events and personalities - Jonathan Spence's Search for Modern China. My wife also enjoyed this place. As a newbie, she was impressed with the maintenance of every room in the palace.

Inside city, easy access. Best place for city residents to relax after work. But be prepared to see a lot of people in holidays or even days with good weather. Sometimes there are annoying young people playing skateboard with high speed, through other people. They might bump into you or go right in front of you and scare you.
James H — Google review
A very large family park with a large lake. Nan hu translates to South Lake. Many activities for the family including boating, horse riding, fun fair rides, pedal cars, and lots more. Great place for a picnic. Local Chinese dance groups and Tai Chi can be found in many parts and you can join in. Many beautiful trees, flowers, Chinese bridges to enjoy and photograph. And of course it is free to enter.

Historic Sites
The Former Site of the Puppet Manchukuo State Department, situated at No. 2 Xinmin Street, Changchun City, is a significant building within the Puppet Eight Ministries complex. Constructed in 1933 and completed in 1936, it now serves as the main teaching building of Jilin University Medical College. The architecture bears resemblance to the Japanese Capitol Building from that era. Visitors have noted its historical significance and praised its recent renovation for its enhanced beauty.
The Former Government House of Manchukuo, located in Changchun, Jilin Province, is a historic building complex that served as the seat of government for the puppet state of Manchukuo, established by Japan in 1932. This imposing structure, built in 1934, showcases a blend of Japanese and Western architectural styles, reflecting the cultural and political influences of the time. As the former headquarters of the Manchukuo government, the building played a significant role in the region's turbulent history, witnessing key events and decisions that shaped the fate of Northeast China during the Japanese occupation. Today, the Former Government House of Manchukuo stands as a museum and a poignant reminder of the complex and often fraught history of the region, offering visitors a unique glimpse into the politics, culture, and society of Manchukuo.

Nestled in the heart of Changchun, the Jilin Museum is a treasure trove for history enthusiasts and culture seekers alike. Don't go. One hour from the city center and still in renovation. Only one floor is open and it is just modern art. The building is also very high, so people with a fear of heights should beware. The science center next to it is also boring, with no English captions, and all the interactive stuff closed. The building looks stunning though. I think this place will be better after renovation. Take a stroll on the nearby reservoir instead.

University
When exploring employment opportunities in China, an invitation was received from Jilin University to travel from Singapore to Changchun and deliver a research presentation during December 2016. Prior to this, a Chinese visa had been applied for and successfully obtained. However, it was discovered that there were no direct flights available between Singapore and Changchun. This university is highly regarded for its acceptance of international students and offers excellent support services.
Situated in the scenic city of Changchun, Jilin University (JLU) has established itself as a premier institution for higher education and research in Northeast China. Established in 1946, JLU has a rich history of academic excellence and innovation, with a strong focus on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields, as well as humanities, social sciences, and medicine. The university's academic programs are designed to foster interdisciplinary learning, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills, preparing students for successful careers in fields such as artificial intelligence, renewable energy, and biotechnology. JLU's research output is impressive, with faculty members publishing numerous papers in top-tier journals annually. The university's research centers and institutes, such as the State Key Laboratory of Superhard Materials and the Institute of Automotive Engineering, provide a platform for faculty and students to engage in cutting-edge research and collaborate with industry partners. JLU's commitment to innovation and entrepreneurship is exemplified by its robust partnerships with leading companies and organizations, such as the China Railway Corporation and the State Grid Corporation of China. The university's incubators and accelerators provide resources and support for students and faculty to develop innovative ideas and start new businesses. Guided by its motto, "Sincerity, Diligence, Practicality, and Innovation," JLU cultivates the next generation of leaders and innovators, empowering them to drive technological advancements and societal impact in China and beyond.

Nice free sculpture park that has sculpture works from all around the world. The park is free but you have to use a mini app in WeChat to register for everyone (with Chinese ID number of foreign passport number). I find it a bit inconvenient for non-Chinese visitors.

There was also an explanation in Japanese. I strongly felt that there is great value for us Japanese people to learn about Puyi's life. It is a place worth visiting to seek peace. (Translated by Google) Jingyue Lake consists of a reservoir and an artificial forest. The place is so vast that it may take more than ten hours to circumnavigate the Jingyuetan Reservoir. The scenery of lakes, mountains and forest trails. I visited after the Mid-Autumn Festival in 2018, and it was drizzling. From the main entrance of the Goddess Square, go east to Qingsong Ridge and west to Yihongzun. The scenery along the pond and reservoir dam is better. Along the driveway, the scenery is poor. I occasionally saw red and yellow autumn leaves along the way, but not many. On the contrary, the lotus and weeping willow garden has the best view of the lake and trees, with a strong autumn mood. In summer, lotuses fall slowly, white birches are golden, autumn maples are crimson, and Changpu reeds and black rocks are solitary and clear. There are entrances and exits in the southeast and west of Jingyuetan. Only the main entrance (Jingyuetan Park Station) and the west gate (Ski Resort Station) are close to the light rail station. Private cars can purchase tickets to enter Jingyuetan. There are sightseeing buses in the area, priced at 10 yuan per trip. Tickets for Jingyue Lake are 30 yuan (2018) (Original)
