Kotai Jingu, also known as Ise Jingu Naiku or Inner Sanctuary, is a significant Shinto site in Japan. Nestled within a forest, this complex comprises multiple shrines that exude solemnity and high reverence. The shrine's architecture seamlessly blends with its natural surroundings, creating an atmosphere akin to a divine abode. Visitors can also witness the presence of a sacred horse that once received the emperor.
Very tranquil, even with the crowds of people, and very spiritual. The importance of the site and sanctuaries is really felt here. Everybody who worked here was really eager to help and we were provided with maps in English which gave a description of the different shrines and sanctuaries and a route to follow while exploring the shrine. They also let us know before going in that there were no signs in English and afterwards they asked us a few questions about our experience so that they can improve the experience for visitors going forward. We really felt like people wanted us to explore the culture here and leave with a knowledge of the local customs and beliefs. It was a really enjoyable and informative experience.

Ise Jingu: A Sacred Sanctuary of Timeless Spirituality Ise Jingu (Ise Grand Shrine) is not just a shrine—it’s a living embodiment of Japan’s spiritual heart, where nature, tradition, and divinity intertwine in perfect harmony. As the most sacred Shinto site in Japan, dedicated to Amaterasu-ōmikami (the Sun Goddess), it offers an unparalleled experience of serenity, reverence, and connection to the eternal. Here’s why it deserves a flawless 5-star review for its profound spiritual essence: 1. A Divine Link to Japan’s Soul Ise Jingu is said to house the Yata no Kagami (Sacred Mirror), one of the Three Imperial Regalia of Japan, symbolizing Amaterasu’s presence. Pilgrims have visited for over 2,000 years, believing the shrine to be a direct bridge between humanity and the kami (gods). The atmosphere hums with an indescribable purity—every step along the forested paths feels like walking through a sacred dream. 2. The Ritual of Rebirth: Shikinen Sengū Every 20 years, the shrine’s inner and outer sanctuaries (Naikū and Gekū) are completely rebuilt in an ancient ritual called Shikinen Sengū. This practice, unchanged since 690 AD, reflects the Shinto belief in renewal, impermanence (mono no aware), and the cyclical nature of life. Witnessing this tradition—or even knowing it exists—adds a deep, metaphysical dimension to the visit, reminding us that divinity is eternal, even as its forms change. 3. Nature as Sacred Architecture Unlike grand temples adorned with gold, Ise Jingu’s beauty lies in its simplicity and harmony with nature. The shrine’s cypress wood structures, thatched roofs, and unpainted timber follow Yuitsu-Shinmei-zukuri, a style reserved only for Ise. The surrounding ancient cedar forests are considered part of the shrine itself, with the Isuzu River acting as a purifying boundary. The act of crossing the Uji Bridge symbolizes leaving the mundane world behind. 4. A Pilgrimage of Purification Visiting Ise Jingu is a spiritual cleanse. Before approaching the inner shrine, pilgrims perform misogi (ritual purification) at the river, washing hands and mouth to purify body and mind. The act of bowing, clapping, and offering a prayer (norito) at the main hall is a moment of profound stillness—where time seems to pause, and the kami feel palpably near. 5. The Energy of Ujiyamada & Oharai-machi The surrounding town, Ujiyamada, and the Oharai-machi district leading to the shrine, are extensions of its sacred energy. Traditional shops serve akafuku mochi (red bean rice cakes), said to be blessed by the gods, while local craftsmen create omamori (charms) infused with Ise’s spiritual power. Even the air here feels different—lighter, clearer, as if touched by the divine. Final Verdict Ise Jingu is more than a destination; it’s a soul experience. Whether you’re drawn by Shinto mysticism, the hypnotic chants of priests, or the whispering forest that seems to breathe with the kami, this shrine transcends time. For those seeking a place where heaven and earth meet, Ise Jingu is nothing short of perfection.

A vast shrine with 2 main shrines (Naiku/Inner Shrine & Geku/ Outer Shrine) & several more shrines. The Inner Shrine is formally known as Kotai Jingu & is dedicated to the sun goddess, Amaterasu Omikami. This spiritual place is definitely worth the visit. Loved how it is surrounded by nature. Definitely a must visit when in Ise.
Aibi Y — Google review
A beautiful place. You won't be able to see the very heart of these holy grounds and the photos around the shrines are forbidden (which is understandable). However, you may be able to see a hen in the woods and insanely clear pond with majestic fish swimming around, which is also alright.
Zuzanna Z — Google review
Considered the most sacred of all shinto shrine, it consists or 2 parts, the Naiku(inner shrine) and the Geku (outer shrine). Quick fact, the shrine is rebuild every 20 years as part of their eternal revival. Do note that there's no photo in the inner scantum of the shrine
Alex W — Google review
For those who are not Japanese: please be prepared to dress respectfully, act respectfully, and talk respectfully within the shrine! I saw one white girl tourist wearing revealing tube top within the shrine today, it’s probably taken as disrespectful act by locals. Please clean your both hands and your mouth at the entrance, people do vow before and after entering the torii gate, (supposed to) not walk the center part of the street after passing the gate (supposingly the center is where gods walk). No taking pictures if it says so. This shrine is not a tourist spot like some other shrines. Please be respectful! Thank you. I know it is for all the other shrines and temples too, but this shrine is really something else for Japanese people. Goddess Amaterasu is known to be the most fierce Goddess. The way to pray: two 90 degree vows, two hand claps, and one more vow at the end to close the 🙏!

Kotai Jingu (Ise Jingu Naikū, Inner Sanctuary) ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Visiting Ise Jingu Naikū is one of those experiences that stays with you long after you leave. As a frequent traveler who has seen sacred and historic sites across continents, I found the atmosphere here to be unlike anywhere else — deeply spiritual, serene, and humbling. The walk through the towering cedar-lined paths sets the tone before you even reach the Inner Sanctuary. Photography is restricted near the most sacred areas, which only adds to the sense of reverence and respect. Even without photos, the memory of standing in such a spiritually powerful place is unforgettable. What impressed me most was how seamlessly the grounds balance accessibility for visitors while preserving the sanctity of the shrine. Staff and volunteers are welcoming, and there’s a quiet efficiency in the way the site is maintained. For travelers, I recommend allowing plenty of time here — not just to see the shrine itself, but also to explore the surrounding town of Ise and its traditional streets. This is a destination worth making part of a broader journey through Japan’s cultural heartland. Spiritual Atmosphere: 5/5 Accessibility & Grounds: 5/5 Overall Experience: 5/5

Brewpub
Ise Kadoya microbrewery, known for its award-winning craft beers, including the prestigious IBA Gold Awards, is a must-visit spot in Ise, Mie Prefecture. This small yet renowned brewery opened its doors in 1997 and quickly gained international recognition by winning their first global beer prize just six years later.
As an American I am absolutely blown away. The beer easily matches what a great American brewer can make. Their NE IPA was absolutely fantastic. I had a large Oyster dish as well and everything was unique and flavorful. If you like beer then this is a place that you must go to when visiting Japan. Oh and it's in a very very old historic structure which just adds to everything.
Jarod F — Google review
After visiting Ise Grand Shrine, we found a bar called Ise Kadoya Beer in the nearby old street. The weather was extremely hot, so the seven of us immediately decided to order a drink to cool down. The IPA inside was decent, but what really stood out was a special beer made with sake yeast. It was incredibly refreshing with a slight sourness, very drinkable and enjoyable. This unexpected beer experience added a cool and delightful touch to our trip.

Amazing location and the meal was a great selection of delicious meals popular in the area. Had local oysters prepared steamed and fried with rice, salad and additional sides which were amazing 😍. I highly recommend it if you ever make it to this popular area in Ise-Shima.

The craft beer was awesome. The fried oysters were not bad but not that fresh. When you order beer at the store front, you can grab a seat at the seats near the entrance not the tables further inside. They are available for dinner.

Came here on a pilgrimage as I really love their beer. Got a six beer tasting set and sat on the peaceful outdoor terrace at the back, overlooking the river. Heaven. Didn't try the food.

Randomly visit during trip to Ise. This restaurants offer one of the best Unagi that I have ever tasted. Unfortunately, I drove a car during this trip. Thus, I had no chance to taste the beer. :( My wife said beer is really good. Staff is really nice and welcome foreigner guests. Will come back in the future for sure.

I felt like I was visiting a magical place! Like almost in a "kamisama" type of anime. This shrine in the woods was rather challenging to find because Google maps did not have its exact location. Perhaps because you need to look for it via its Japanese name. However, this location pin came v helpful and I hope that it can help you too! 34°24'28.7"N 136°45'48.6"E But, this whole trying to find the place experience, just adds to the magical mystery that surrounds the place. Once you find the entrance to the place, just take a leap of faith and drive through the stone torii gate ("Spirited Away" anyone?). A few minutes later, you will arrive at a carpark in the forest. Park there and walk on the pathway. It was near dusk when we were there, and we knew that there was only one other person in the park as there was just another truck in the carpark. I was wondering to myself, who had cleared the forest pathway! Must be magic as the shrine didn't look like it was attended to. Lol. Laughter aside, I did feel like I was forest bathing, walking in silence through the forest with its huge tall trees, bird sounds in the distant, the sound of clear water running, and the beautiful shrine in the forest clearing was just part of the everyday magic in this part of the world. It was pretty cute to see the owner of the truck appear later carrying two gallons of spring water from the Shrine, bottled and packed to go home! Apparently, the water is a top 100 spring water in Japan! I had some at the shrine direct from the spring and it was really delightful. Try it when you get there. The shrine is dedicated to the Sun Goddess, as legend says that she hid in the cave at the shrine to escape from the pranks of her brother the moon God. It took a whole party of other gods to coax her out of the cave so that the world wouldn't be plummeted into darkness. There was indeed something magical, looking at the cave. Perhaps it's the running water, the respect that ppl had for nature, the walk in the woods but indeed, it was a wonderful magical experience for me.

Very calming and cool atmosphere surrounded the entire area, if you go to visit Ise Grand Shrine I definitely recommend taking the bus out to Amano Iwato. Just make sure the bus will still be running when you’re ready to leave or else you’ll get stranded like I did!!

It was an easy walk to a source of the water, which is selected as one of the best quality water 100 in Japan and Amno-Iwato. if you like to go up further for the small shrine of Sarutahiko or/and a wind hole, you can have even more exercise.

Ama-no-Iwato (Erihara Water Hole) in Shima City, Mie Prefecture is one of the places where the legend of Amaterasu Omikami's "hiding in the cave of heaven" is passed down, appearing in Japanese mythology. The spring water flows down as a waterfall called Misogi-daki, and it is possible for ascetics to perform waterfall ascetic practices. There is also a changing room nearby for those who wish to undergo waterfall ascetic practices.

Nestled in the heart of Shima City, Izawanomiya is a charming wooden Shinto shrine that plays a pivotal role in an annual rice-planting festival. Surrounded by lush subtropical vegetation and unique natural monuments like the hamanatsume trees and Onigajo Rocks, this serene location offers visitors a glimpse into Japan's rich cultural heritage.
This is a smaller temple in the Ise area. It is quite a history as well. It's not as big or as Grand as some of the other places but if you have the time it's worth it.

Shrine is very barebones, but is still manned. Part of the Ichinomiya pilgrimage. Construction is similar to Ise Jingu Geku and the Shuin Stamp is plain and simple like the Ise ones. There’s free parking and a bathroom just around the corner. On a weekday, I had to ring a bell to get my stamp, but he wrote it in my book. Quick stop. From here it’s 30 minutes to Ise Jingu Naiku.

(Translated by Google) Shrines with difficult kanji characters or difficult pronunciations for Izawano-miya are often prestigious or sacred, and this is no exception as it is a branch shrine of Kotai-jingu Shrine and is a prestigious shrine. After passing through the wooden Shinmei-style torii gate, you walk along the approach covered in trees. It is quiet, and the only sound of nature is the sacred and solemn flow of air, which feels comfortable. The magnificent inner-carved chigi sashes and the solemn Shinmei-style main hall made of six katsuo-gi sashes appear in the open space along with the grounds for the shrine transfer ceremony. It is not known why a branch shrine was established at Isobe, over the mountain from the Inner Shrine, but perhaps the unique atmosphere of the approach and Princess Yamato suggest that Izawano-miya was also originally Ise❓️ (Original)

The Yokoyama Visitor Center is a fantastic stop for travelers looking to explore the stunning views of Yokoyama. While public transportation may not be the most convenient, visitors can enjoy a pleasant walk from the center to the observation deck, which doubles as a bit of exercise. The center features spacious facilities with clean restrooms and friendly staff who are more than willing to assist with taxi arrangements if needed. A highlight here is the informative video show available in multiple languages, making it accessible for everyone.
This is an EXTREMELY informative (not to mention beautiful and spacious) visitor center. So many pamphlets in many different languages, beautiful photo books, and cute souvenirs. I bought a pair of Japanese flip flop sandals made of cloth and rice-straw (as opposed to wood). I totally love them as indoor slippers. The staff is super kind as well, they even gifted my friends and I some pearl barrettes :’)

The view is nice from the observation platform. You can see the inland sea and islands clearly. There is a small cafe there as well. The parking space is limited, so you might have to park at the bottom and hike for about 7-8 minutes. The bike parking is also at the base only.

The observation deck here is exceptional, and it's a must-visit when sightseeing in the area. From the deck, you can see the bay and scattered islands, with the scenery appearing even more magnificent under the sunlight. There's also a café at the deck, where you can enjoy the view while having soft-serve ice cream, making for a very comfortable experience. There are two ways to get up the mountain: first, you can park at the lot at the foot of the mountain and take a 15-minute trail, which is well-paved with steps; the second option is to drive up the mountain, but due to limited parking spaces, they control traffic with a one-in-one-out system. We waited about 10 minutes.

Anorisaki Lighthouse is a picturesque attraction that provides a stunning view of the ocean. The lighthouse, constructed in 1873, can be accessed by climbing its narrow stairs and offers panoramic vistas of the sea. Below the lighthouse lies a park with historical exhibits. However, getting there may prove difficult due to limited access via narrow roads and lack of other nearby tourist attractions.
This white, square lighthouse stands on Cape Anorizaki overlooking Matoya Bay, and although it is not tall, it offers a spectacular 360-degree view of the ocean. This historic lighthouse was the setting for the movie "Joy and Sorrow for Many Years," and is one of 16 climbable lighthouses across the country. The lighthouse museum and the vast lawn area in front of it are pleasant, but care should be taken as the road to get there is narrow.

it is not worth coming here. Just a normal lighthouse with no park. Best avoid the carpark that Google map leads you. there is a man who want to collect 300 yen for carpark. we drove about 200 metres in the opposite direction where there is dock and plenty of space to park without charge. there is a toilet across the road.

Beautiful view from the park. It also contains a small yet informative museum. Enjoying sunset was priceless. Reservation: No needed Parking: no, but there are plenty of paying parking lot nearby Toilet: yes

Thrilling! When I planned my trip, this place was only meant to be a brief stop. Never expected such a magnificent view up on the light house. Highly recommended. Don’t miss the shops that are on the roadside shops.

Good panoramic view on the ocean. Feels like an old tourism spot because of the age of shop owners in the area

Not much, bet enough to suffice. A beautiful view of the surroundings and a ticket comes with access to the small informative museum about the history of the tower as well as about the town. Tip: If you happen to reside within the town and can provide some small evidence of that, then you actually have free access to the tower as well as the museum!

Unagi restaurant
Nakaroku is an eel restaurant located near Ise Shrine and Iza Shrine in Mie Prefecture. The building itself is considered a cultural property, adding to the dining experience. Visitors can enjoy an eel bowl served in a tatami room with a Showa atmosphere. The price of the dish varies based on the number of fillets, and customers have the option to increase the amount of rice.
(Translated by Google) This was sent to me when I visited Iza Shrine in Ise Grand Shrine Bekku. It was my second visit to Izamiya Shrine and I happened to see customers entering Churoku-san's store. What shop? When I looked it up, I found out that it was an eel restaurant, and the price was reasonable, so I couldn't resist eating it. Until then, I had never noticed it and had no idea there was an eel restaurant in such a place. Just before noon on a Sunday, I was shown to a waiting area. Source of tangible cultural property? Maybe it's because it's a Japanese inn, but the female clerk has a certain class and polite customer service. My wife ordered three pieces of eel bowl, and I ordered five pieces. The eel bowl that was brought to me looked normal. However, it had a flavor that was different from what I had imagined, and not found at other eel restaurants. Tender eel grilled in sweet sauce, rice covered in sauce, and large liver soup. Until I was 54 years old, I had eaten unagidon and unagiju at various restaurants, but I never felt that each restaurant had a different impact on me, so I just ranked the deliciousness that I felt. This eel bowl felt like it was on a different level of deliciousness. It was so delicious that I felt like I had found the best eel bowl for me.

However, as soon as they opened, we were shown to a seat. The eel was grilled to perfection and was fragrant, and the skin was crispy, which I think is Kansai style. The rice was also generously covered in sauce, and it felt like it was mixed in, so we enjoyed it until the very last bite. The atmosphere of the room, as the name of the restaurant suggests, was that of an old inn. There were several tables lined up in a tatami-covered hall on the second floor. (Translated by Google) It was an hour later that we were able to sit down and eat right when the restaurant opened. Was it bad luck that the queues were not right? The couple sitting next to us, who sat down at almost the same time, finished their meal and left. The eel that came out was burnt black and had a bitter taste, which wasn't the case when I came here before. It seems that it's a popular restaurant and there are a lot of takeaway orders, so perhaps that's inevitable? It was a bit disappointing. The building is charming, and the staff are polite. There were many customers, even on a weekday. The menu only had three types of eel, three to five slices. The liver soup was delicious. The eel was plentiful and reasonably priced. It looked delicious! But I wonder how it actually tasted. The meat varied, but it was disappointingly thick and tough. My elderly mother said it was like rubber and she couldn't eat it. (This is my personal opinion.) The regular portion of rice was a huge amount, but it was all mixed in with sauce, and there was no thick, white part. The pickles were also cheap. I can't deny that it was disappointing. It was impressive how well the sauce mixed with the rice, which could be described as distinctive. The sauce had a rich, deep flavour that felt like a secret recipe. The eel was nicely browned around the outside but plump inside, and really delicious. The inside of the restaurant was a lovely room where you could relax and unwind, just like a traditional inn. Despite the absence of hand-kneaded sushi, visitors can enjoy a flavorful sashimi rice bowl with conmori and bonito sashimi. The restaurant's reputation for excellent bonito chazuke has attracted many patrons, although some have noted that the owners may be hesitant about serving foreigners.
A restaurant near the local port. Very fresh seafood, the style called Obanzai you can pick from bunch of dishes on the counter. I had a rice bowl with skipjack tuna (locally popular for bonito flakes) and leather jacket sashimi. La Mer, a renowned French restaurant, is known for its exceptional service and exquisite cuisine. Situated in an opulent five-star hotel with a fascinating background, this establishment offers elegant yet uncomplicated dining experiences. The breakfast area provides an extraordinary level of attention to detail that goes beyond expectations; the staff graciously escort guests to their tables and even assist with seating arrangements. They kindly inquire about preferred beverages and cooking choices for eggs.
This restaurant truly exceeded my expectations! I did not think that we would have fine dinning in a small coastal community in Japan. When I entered the dinning room, I became even more worried as the dinning room is rather large and I usually do not associate good quality service and food with large dinning rooms. Well, I was wrong and was pleasantly surprised with both an exceptional attention to food preparation and superb service! Our group of 7 people had nearly an exclusive waiter who was paying attention to every detail needs of our table. We ordered the tasting menu and every dish was done nearly perfectly! Thank you for a wonderful evening and for such amazing attention to detail in your food preparation and the service you provided us.

After awhile again another service staff came and check if I need additional coffee. What is nice if they serve with a smile and respect to customer.

(Translated by Google) I'd been wanting to try this restaurant since I was 20, but then I got seriously ill. This taught me the importance of acting on impulse, so I decided to stay at the hotel while I was visiting Ise Grand Shrine, which I'd also always wanted to visit. During my stay, I visited three times, including breakfast. I'll write about the two lunches I had here. (It's long, so please read on if you're interested.) Lunch on Day 3: I had the seafood curry I'd always wanted to try. I ordered the course meal, so I had scallop confit and gazpacho first. This is something I felt from the La Mer dish I had last night: I think their use of vinegar is mystically wonderful. They use sourness, crispness, and sweetness in an exquisite way to match the ingredients. Brilliant. The gazpacho was a little original, and I think the vinegar created a refreshing sensation that was perfect for the hot Japanese summer. It was a soup that built up anticipation for the next dish. And then the curry arrived. Is there any curry that is this mild, delicious, refined, and hearty? I can only say that I'm glad to be born Japanese. I guess they mixed bouillabaisse with Japanese curry. How do they make a bouillabaisse that's so fishy-free and have it enhance the curry without clashing with it? The abalone and spiny lobster were cooked to perfection. Soft and delicious, I wanted to keep chewing. I'd also never had saffron rice this delicious. Apparently it's Iga rice. It was just the right softness and the seasoning was mild, making it delicious on its own. The mango jam that came with it was amazing. I want to lick it and drink cognac all night long. For dessert, we had pumpkin pudding. With caramel ice cream and apple compote. The appetizer from La Mer the day before. This day's dessert. I had pumpkin three times, as an appetizer on the fourth day. The quality of the pumpkin, and the sauce and seasoning brought out its sweetness. I've never eaten such a delicious pumpkin dish. When I asked the restaurant staff about the deliciousness of this vegetable, I learned that Chef Higuchi speaks directly with farmers in Mie, purchases it, and prepares it in dishes. I'd like to return in the fall to eat more pumpkin dishes. Day 4 - Lunch I came here because I wanted to eat shrimp cream soup, abalone steak, and spiny lobster with American sauce. It's been almost 40 years since I last came here. To fully savor all three, I ordered the seafood course with spiny lobster with American sauce. The amuse-bouche was bigfin reef squid escabeche. As expected, the use of vinegar is very skillful. Shrimp consommé jelly and vegetable and seafood mousse. The shrimp jelly acts as a sauce, bringing out the flavor of all the vegetables and seafood. The cherry tomatoes are incredibly delicious. Sweet. Like fruit, yet still a proper vegetable. Pumpkin mousse is layered underneath the jelly. The pumpkin dishes here are absolutely delicious. I think the white fish mixed in with the shrimp and abalone is yellowtail. Eating it with the jelly removes the strong flavor and makes it really delicious. Shrimp cream soup. One of the best bisques I've ever had. It's a little salty, but it really brings out the shrimp flavor. The balance of the cream is just perfect. According to the restaurant staff, the seafood curry and bisque are the must-try dishes at this restaurant. I can totally understand why. I'd love to have it for my last dinner. Abalone steak. Browned butter sauce. The abalone is simmered with daikon radish and salt for three hours. Even if you simmer just one, it won't become this soft unless you simmer a large amount at once. (The person I mentioned earlier apparently tried it at home, lol.) This is what happens when you try hearty French cuisine featuring the finest Japanese ingredients. It's so good it's unfair. The abalone was tender, and the sauce had a strong buttery flavor; I ate it all, dipping bread in it. Spiny Lobster with American Sauce This is another example of how spiny lobster can be made into a delicious French dish in Japan. The shrimp is delicious. The sauce is delicious. That's all. I dug into it in silence. Even the legs. Lol. I ate absentmindedly, as if I were at a relative's house. Sorry for my bad manners. Dessert. Sweet potato mousse and sesame ice cream. The sweet potato mousse was delicious. It had something in common with the pumpkin, and the sweetness and flavor of the sweet potato were brought out to 120%. I was able to fully enjoy both traditional, powerful French cuisine and sauces and seasonings that brought out the full flavor of the vegetables. I would also like to thank the restaurant staff for listening to my various requests and answering my persistent questions. I would like to visit again.
