Toll road rest stop
Visitor Centers
Roadside Station Namioka Apple Hill is a bustling rest stop with a variety of shopping, dining options, and engaging activities. While there's no ATM on site, visitors can enjoy an indigo dyeing workshop by making reservations and paying in cash. The friendly staff offers assistance in choosing from different sample designs for dyeing fabrics at reasonable prices. The station features apple-flavored dishes and a pleasant park known as Apple Hill where visitors can take leisurely strolls or simply unwind.
This place was godsent, in the middle of a long 3hr drive from East to West coast of Aomori, especially when it started to snow. We spent quite a bit of time shopping and eating there, indoors and sheltered from the cold.

Stop here to rest and relax on your drive to Aomori Prices are slightly lower Lots of friendly shop owners Plenty of apple related stuff
L-C L — Google review
Has many stores and restaurants. I enjoyed and bought vegetables, fruits, snacks, pastries, and Raman.

Reservations are required, cash only (there is no ATM on site). The ladies who work there are so friendly and helpful. You choose from a variety of sample designs, and different size fabrics are priced accordingly. The prices are quite reasonable, my handkerchief was under ¥1500. They'll help you with your technique to get it just right. It took me about an hour to dye a handkerchief from start to finish. You'll take it home wet, in a plastic bag, and it's going to smell strongly for some time. I washed mine several times to no avail, but it did stop smelling after a few wears and airing out.

Points of Interest & Landmarks
Tsuru no Maihashi Bridge is Japan's longest wooden bridge, spanning 300m over Lake Tsugaru Fujimi with stunning views of Mount Iwaki. Constructed in 1994 using traditional Japanese techniques and locally sourced Hiba trees, the bridge's elegant triple arches make for a picturesque sight, especially when illuminated by the setting sun.
Nothing better than a magnificent Bridge contrasting the blanket of endless white snow. Currently due to heavy snow and seasonal closures, accessing the viewing platform and crossing the bridge is not possible. If you are handicapped or using a wheelchair please be mindful the entire area leading up to the bridge is covered in 10-50cm of snow.
ᄑᄌᄑ — Google review
The bridge is continuing to be upgraded. The front section is a new one. When you proceed to walk to the second half of the bridge you can see the original section. Kudos to the local team who is making great effort to preserve the bridge. And you get a good view of the Mt Iwaki in the background. Great place for outdoor activities.
Karl W — Google review
Definitely worth a visit if you enjoy nature and scenery. Spent an hour walking around the park and visited the nearby red-crown crane sanctuary. There a restaurant overlooking the lake and have a good view of the bridge and the mountain.
Won L — Google review
Nice bridge and great views of mount iwaki!
Sherin O — Google review
The bridge is very cool and provides a very nice view of a nearby mountain for a photo op. The Aomori apple soft serve icecream from the shop next to the car park is a must though.
Robert M — Google review
The bridge is closed as it's being repaired but it looks pretty and picturesque from afar. May not be worth the drive just to see this bridge.
Lye W — Google review
We arrive during maintenance time. Too bad I can't walk on the bridge. But the view with the mountain in the back is just peaceful.
Oscar C — Google review
On December 21, 2019, my family of five arrived here from Sendai. It snowed a bit during our hour-long stay, and the cranes danced once for a few seconds for us. We were contented to learn why the bridge was so named.

The Tachineputa Museum is a fascinating venue that showcases enormous and colorful floats used in the Goshogawara Tachineputa Festival, which is one of the four largest summer festivals held between August 4th and 8th. The museum features three real tachineputa exhibited at the Tachineputa no Yakata, with neputa parades starting from the museum.
Absolutely amazing festival "floats" (really 20m tall statues on wheels), worth the detour to Goshogawara to visit. Seriously impressive and the museum is well designed to allow visitors to appreciate the art. About a 6min walk from the train station.
Pierre B — Google review
Throughout the time we were there, I was agog with wonder at the creativity of the minds that made these awesome inspiring structures. Each side is different. Filled with beauty and a need to express the creativity that comes from within.
Ameeta A — Google review
Interesting place to visit to find out more about the floats and the process behind the construction from design to building it. Pretty stunning. There is a good video being shown at the start of the exhibition showing the process throughout the seasons.
Lee L — Google review
It's totally worth the visit . The display is about four storeys tall and weighs 1.9 ton .It is a great piece of art . Entrance fee is affordable with 2 hrs free car park ( next to the museum ) . A must visit when you are in Aomori .
Choo H — Google review
The size and scale of the paper doll float characters is breathtaking, truly awesome. It's definitely worth a visit.
Lee M — Google review
Very impressive TachiNeputa museum. There’s an art gallery on second floor within the building but at a different section. Tickets can be purchased at the main counter, for cheaper price (TachiNeputa and Art Gallery combo). Third floor is a spacious zone with people working on the following year’s Neputa. Forth and fifth floor are learning/ activity zones or some sort, where you can pay to make your own gold fish lantern(?). Sixth floor is an observation deck and restaurant.
Tonn — Google review
This place may look pretty unassuming on the outside, but the inside is absolutely stunning. This is where they keep the floats for the annual Nebuta festival. It's amazing to learn the history of the floats, how they're built, and the meaning behind it all. They also have an art gallery on the 2nd floor, which was very tame compared to the regular museum. Id say skip the art gallery unless you need to kill time or something.

Magic place. all the atmosphere of this famous matsuri. one feels very small at the foot of these floats. congratulations to you artists and inhabitants of Goshogawara

Nestled in the heart of Kanagi, the Dazai Osamu Memorial Hall, also known as Shayokan, is a beautifully restored childhood home of the renowned Japanese author Osamu Dazai. This Important Cultural Property dates back to 1907 and now serves as a museum dedicated to his life and works. To reach this literary gem, visitors can take a scenic train ride from Goshogawara Station to Kanagi Station, followed by a pleasant ten-minute stroll.
This is the birthplace of Dazai Osamu. More than Dazai himself, I've always been interested in the famous old buildings in Kanagi-cho, Goshogawara, where the Tsugaru dialect is said to be particularly strong. After my visit, I wanted to read more of Dazai Osamu's works and learn more about him, and I was also very impressed by the view of the wide, flat Tsugaru Plain, with the horizon visible.
KSRG 1 — Google review
VERY MUCH worth the journey, and incredibly accessible once you’re in. Lots of guidance and way more displays than shown on Google. Small souvenir shop as well, but tickets themselves are only ¥600. Obviously overall surreal to visit the birthplace of my favourite author, and the reason that I visited Aomori.
Athena L — Google review
This place is worth visit if you know the Japanese novelist Dazai Osamu.

Osamu Dazai’s childhood home. You can tour almost the entire home and walk into each of the rooms. There are also QR codes to scan for audio guides in various languages as well as guided tours available.

I had a lovely time at the Shayokan. The staff were very kind, and they stored my baggage behind the counter for me. There is one room towards the back where photography is not allowed. A lot of information was translated into English via QR code audio tour. They even offered tea and coffee for a reasonable price. I hope to visit again someday with friends.
Esja S — Google review
Aomori is my hometown but it was my first visit. They had heaters but my feet felt frozen as I walked on tatami mats and stairs. It is certainly grand for someone’s home. I saw a living room, bedrooms, kitchen, but not bathroom nor bath. This place is kept clean but requires extensive renovation. It was nice to see Dazai’s handwritten letters and capes.

Shinto shrine
Sights & Landmarks

Takayama Inari Shrine is a serene and picturesque Shinto shrine located on top of a hill, offering visitors an extraordinary sight with hundreds of red torii gates lined up one after another. The shrine is dedicated to the god of rice, agriculture, and business prosperity and is guarded by numerous fox statues. With nearly 1,000 bright orange torii gates arranged in the shape of a dragon, this rural shrine resembles a smaller version of Fushimi-Inari-Taisha in Kyoto.
This is a local Shrine for the locals and it is very well maintained. The terrain is much easier for visitors to explore its wonderful serenity and picturesque environment. Access is available but primarily via private mobility transport. The way there is well sign-posted bus car. Judging from the size of its car park and amenities, it does accommodate up to some 100 visitors. With the crowd at Fushimi Inari Shrine, this is more private and spiritual place to visit and experience Japanese culture.
Dennis T — Google review
I think it’s a special place. There is a lot to this shrine and you should see for yourself. BUT… driving is a must… I did not… so getting there by bus only takes you to the entrance at the bottom. So you have to walk 40 minutes up and back down to the bus that only comes every once in a while. Just letting those know just in case :)
Thomas G — Google review
This is a beautiful shrine with few tourists visiting so it’s easy to enjoy and quite peaceful. It is generally well maintained, although some parts need some improvement. It is easy to access by car, and there is a small parking lot available.
Bull D — Google review
A great shrine to visit! It does take some effort to climb up the hill, but it's worth it. I went on April 16, 2025—there weren’t any flowers, but the scenery was still beautiful. Not many souvenirs available, but they did have some limited-edition Sakura-themed omamori.
PLOYPICHCHA A — Google review
Superb. We showed up on a cold and rainy day and had the place almost completely to ourselves. It’s a beautiful location and with the drive from the city. We spent about an hour here and really enjoyed ourselves. It’s worth stopping in the teahouse and reading the history of the Cheseborough shipwreck and the aid of the local villagers.
Josh D — Google review
We drove to the location and had an amazing time. We went towards the end of August and the temps were about 30 degrees C, so wear comfortable shoes and clothing. It costs nothing to enter.
Russell C — Google review
Took the bus H53 from Gushugowara (Do check bus timing! It is not as frequent as you would have imagined). Bus journey is approximately 50+ minutes followed by a 30-40mins walk (3.6km) into the Shrine area. Alternatively, you can try getting a taxi in. Overall, a really pleasant view! For those who want to explore and go off track! Do visit!
Yienjun C — Google review
One of the best jnari shrines in Japan. The location is easily accessible by car. And it’s usually less crowded than other popular shrines in Japan. Definitely recommend this spot.

Soba noodle shop
Kamenoya is a popular restaurant located in Goshogawara, just a short walk from the station. It's known for its unique menu item called Ten Chuka Soba and small tempura bowl. The restaurant has received high ratings and tends to get crowded quickly, so it's best to arrive early.
Cute little family run noodle restaurant. The owner is very friendly and accommodating... Don't worry about the lack of English menu or pictures, just say tempura soba (Udon) or curry soba (Udon) and they will understand. The soup of the tempura soba is particularly outstanding.
Eddie L — Google review
(Translated by Google) I received Tenchuka Soba for 850 yen. I heard it was popular with tourists, so I decided to try it. A small kakiage of scallops sits on top of the old-fashioned chicken-based Chinese noodles. The soup is light and gentle, and the classic toppings include Chinese pork, pork belly, and green onions. It was light at first, but in the second half it started to get heavier and heavier due to the oil from the kakiage. It's not suitable for eating often, but maybe it's good for occasional consumption? ! I would like to try normal Chinese noodles once. The other dish is the Tentoji soba that my companion ate.Is this the correct one? ? ? ?

(Translated by Google) I went there for the first time after being recommended by an acquaintance. The prices are generally reasonable for a soba restaurant, and even a large serving costs only 100 yen more, which is quite reasonable. The time it took for the tempura and soba to arrive was short, and the noodle soup was light, but delicious. The oyakodon was also light in flavor, but the balance of the sweetness of the egg was good and it was delicious. The portion size when I ordered the large serving was a little lacking, but...

(Translated by Google) I passed by without noticing the store's modest appearance ^^; I ordered Tenchuuka. "Ramen and tempura" is an interesting combination. The ramen has a light soup and thin noodles that combine the flavors. Crispy scallop tempura goes surprisingly well. It somehow felt nostalgic to me. Inside the store, there are three tables for four people and a counter seat. It was a heartwarming feeling to see the turtle motif of the store's name casually placed there. There was no parking lot, so I parked at a nearby paid parking lot and walked.

(Translated by Google) I had the Tempura Chinese and warm soba noodles, and neither was particularly noteworthy, just average. In particular, the tempura in the Tempura Chinese wasn't freshly fried, and the thin soup was just flavored water. What's more, both the tempura and soup were lukewarm. The noodles were a bit soft. The scallop tempura wasn't fully utilized.
