Nature & Wildlife Areas
Chitwan National Park, established in 1973, covers an area of 932 square kilometers and is home to a variety of wildlife including Bengal tigers, monkeys, crocodiles, deer, colorful birds, and the endangered one-horned rhino. Visitors can take a private jeep safari arranged through Sapana Lodge to explore the park and have the chance to spot wild elephants, sloth bears, and even leopards if they're lucky.
Amazing jungle experience! Saw rhinos, deer, elephants, different kinds of birds, little monkey. Peaceful nature, great local guides, and unforgettable safari moments. Perfect for nature and adventure lovers.

Chitwan National Park is one of those places that stays with you long after you leave. The natural beauty is breathtaking, the lush greenery, wildlife all around, and a peaceful atmosphere that makes you slow down and truly enjoy the moment. Watching the sunset from the bank of the Rapti River was magical, with the sky reflecting on the water in the most stunning colors. I also had the chance to meet some wonderful local people, whose warmth and hospitality made the experience even more special. Ending the day with the Tharu cultural dance was the perfect touch: joyful, vibrant, and a beautiful way to connect with the local traditions. It was more than just a trip; it felt like a meaningful experience that I’ll always cherish.
Anis B — Google review
A beautiful taste of the jungle. Keep safari was disappointing however the canoe ride absolutely made up for this. Guides are professional. I wouldn’t recommend staying for more than a few days, once you’ve seen the local culture and experienced the safaris I would move onto your next destination. Plenty of options on the main high street to eat and drink. Worth a stop, but wouldn’t make this the focal point of your trip as I personally believe Nepal has more to offer!

Just back from Chitwan National Park and wow! 🐅🌿 The jungle safari was incredible, and seeing the rhinos up close was absolutely breathtaking. We also enjoyed an elephant safari, glided along the Rapti River on a canoe ride, and got a glimpse of the fascinating Tharu culture with their traditional dances and local villages. Every moment felt so close to nature — from spotting exotic birds to watching the sunset over the grasslands. Truly an unforgettable adventure!

"Just back from an exhilarating jungle safari in Chitwan National Park, Nepal! The lush greenery, majestic wildlife, and serene surroundings made for an unforgettable adventure. Spotted rhinos, elephants, crocodiles, lizards and exotic birds in their natural habitat. A perfect blend of thrill and tranquility in the heart of nature. Highly recommend this experience for any wildlife enthusiast!"

Spending time by the river, surrounded by whispering trees and the gentle sounds of flowing water, felt like a return to something pure and essential. Birds sang overhead while deer peeked curiously from the woods, and the cool breeze carried the scent of earth and leaves. It was a blissful moment of connection—with nature, with peace, and with myself. Everything felt calm, alive, and beautifully in harmony.
Aarogya K — Google review
Main attractions are closed for 3 months ( July , August and September) if you travel during these 3 months you will only be allowed to do safari in buffer zone and outer zone. Try not to visit during these months. Overall good experience, spotting a Tiger is by luck but you will surely spot Deers, Crocodile, Rhino, Monkey
Tejas A — Google review
Loved the park. Beautiful landscapes. The bars in the village by the river are a perfect place for a beer at sunset. I’ve enjoyed both the tours by Jeep than the ones by canoe and walking.

The Elephant Breeding Center, located just 3 kilometers west of Sauraha, is a delightful family-friendly destination that offers visitors the chance to observe elephants of all ages while learning about their care and feeding. This center plays a crucial role in providing elephants for safaris within Chitwan National Park. While some may find it resembles more of an elephant parking lot than a traditional breeding facility, the sight of playful calves frolicking together is undeniably heartwarming.
An incredible spot inside Chitwan National Park - the Elephant Breeding & Training Centre. It’s truly mesmerizing to watch these gentle giants up close. A must-visit if you're exploring the park!
Yalakhom K — Google review
The good: Elephants look healthy and calm with shelter from the sun and plenty of food and water. Does look like it’s kept clean. The elephants interact with people daily with the trainer feeding the calf sugarcane. The “not so good”…: the adult elephants are kept (on very short) chains during part of the day… and supposedly they are free to roam the jungle the other part of the day… I guess we are mindful we don’t really know how long they are chained up during the day - it could very well be 5 minutes or 20 hours…
Ivo V — Google review
Ambient and nice places to go . Tickets are only required to visit inside centre. One can enjoy green lust of fields outside the centre which is spread in large area didn’t require any tickets.
Jessi P — Google review
Nice place to see elephants but when we went they were all chained up so pretty sad. Some reviews show them roaming freely but we didn't see any roaming free. Pretty small place. You have to cross a big bridge to get there, but you can see everything in less than an hour unless you decide to roam around off pavement. We bought sugar cane to feed the elephants so it was still a good experience to see mom and babies.
Uyen — Google review
Stop going there! We witnessed them hit a baby elephant with a stick that had metal on it. The elephants are chained (elephants are not domestic animals), and they set things on fire near them, then move away to avoid the smoke while the elephants are left surrounded by it. It's a place of pain. In the forest, they beat them to force them to gather what they need (just walked by and it was painful to watch.)
Blue C — Google review
The place is nice. But not much you can expect. These looked like more for short stay elephants. You will see some small once’s running around or being chained near their mothers. The place can be visited in the morning within an hour max. Nothing much to do or see. The place is serene and nice for an early morning stroll. If you are lucky you may see a group of deers wondering outside the breeding area.
John L — Google review
Very cute little elephants roaming free is the best view. Lots of elephants here. This place has upgraded since the last time with a huge bridge that's just across the river which else had to be crossed on a canoe made of tree hollowed out. It's a nice place to meet nature but. It's a breeding and training center for elephants.
Rahul S — Google review
I visited this place as part of a travel agency's arrangement, but after seeing it, I wouldn't recommend it at all. It's an extremely small area, so small that you can walk through it in just five minutes. What’s even more distressing is that the elephants' situation is a form of cruelty, both to the elephants themselves and to those who come to see them. The elephants are chained by their legs for some unknown reason, and some even have their two front legs shackled together, making them only able to hop rather than walk. I saw the elephants pacing restlessly and crying out in anxiety. Some people might find the elephants' calls intriguing, but all I felt throughout my visit was a deep sense of sorrow.

Jeep Safari Chitwan

Sauraha offers a range of exciting activities for tourists, such as jungle walks, elephant rides, jeep safaris, canoe rides, and Tharu cultural programs. Visitors can also enjoy an elephant bath and observe wildlife through trophy exhibitions. Additionally, they can witness breathtaking views of sunrise and sunset and engage in bird watching at the peculiarly named 20,000 lake (bis hajari taal).
Jeep Safari is an exciting ride on an open top jeep into the dense forest of jungle. It is possible to closely observe the wild animals as well as take their snaps during jeep safari. Jeep Safari offers relative safety from wild animals. As Jeep Safari are operated with regularly inside the jungle of Sauraha the wildlife are used to the right of jeeps carrying tourists, and generally do not run away when the jeep gets near. The safari operators also stop the vehicle of any wild animal is encountered or seen from a distance. Thus the jeep safari is an excellent way to observe the wild animals and travel through the jungles in Sauraha.
Ananda P — Google review
The national park is a beautiful place, but my jeep safari was a real letdown. We started late (waiting for a truck that was "coming soon" for about 45 minutes) and ended early, with a pointless and extended "snack break" in the middle. So in total we spent only 80-90 minutes actually in the vehicle trying to spot animals. I understand there's no guarantee of seeing a rhino, tiger, etc., but a good operator would maximize our chances by giving us as much time out there as possible. Didn't happen here.
Grover Q — Google review
There are 3 types of Safari 8 hr, 4 hr and 2.5 hr Safari. Each jeep can handle 10 pax and 1 guide. For 4 hr and 8 hr safari one needs to cross a small river by a boat and then alight the jeep. The jeep goes deep into the forest. We could not watch many animals as it was raining heavily that day. The experience was great.

"A wilderness of rich ecosystem that includes mammals, birds, reptiles and water animals of numerous kinds. The highlights of this park are the 500 Asian one-horned rhinoceros (One-Horned Rhino) and some hundred nocturnal Royal Bengal Tigers that live in the dense forests of the park. You will discover a lost world of towering trees and twisting vines, of pre-historic rhino and lumbering elephants, crocodiles, pythons and deer.

The dances here truly showcase the beauty of Tharu culture. The Mayur dance, inspired by the peacock, was stunning. The fire dance was thrilling, and the lathi naach, performed with sticks, was full of energy and skill. Each dance reflected the rich traditions of the Tharu community and was a joy to watch. It was an amazing experience that brought their culture to life. #TharuCulture #TraditionalDance #Nepal #Travel #Culture

Best Cultural performance...... i ever seen at any place......their performance was best .They hold their tradition and culture in themselves. They entertain a lot . The show was about approx 2 hours and i didn't got bored at a second.........i appreciate your cultural dance and their contributions......the best moment was that peacock dance #Best and beautiful experience....and that fire cycle was amazing and awesome....next time when i go to nepal i want to go again ......✨🔥

Enjoyed tharu cultural dance. Price of ticket is bit High but we enjoyed the entire show. We have also joined their dance group at the end of program for group dance 😀 Strongly recommend for friends and family
Hem S — Google review
It was really wonderful cultural performance by tharu community who have created a platform for themselves to preserve and showcase their culture and traditions to the world. If you are in sauraha for jungle safari then do not forget to mark up this place in your list as in the end you will be mesmerised. The show is all about different forms of dance performed by tharu community(boys, girls, men and women) throughout the year in different seasons. The show begins right after the dusk, around 7pm lasting for about 1 and a half hour with 5 to 6 performances of various forms of their traditional dances in a wholesome traditional attire with their own instruments. Long stick dance, short stick dance, fire dance, peacock dance etc. are different forms of dances performed here for the visitors. Peacock dance is epic as the moves are so smooth and fluent as if some peacock has came and is performing. During the last dance performance do not hesitate to go to the stage and dance ;) Entry is based on tickets and the prices are nominal. The hall is fully air conditioned with a slight touch of theatre. I have some videos which i will be posting. One genuine setback which i have faced during the show is that the lady who is describing and handling the stage has to be little soft with her english accent as it was becoming difficult to understand the descriptions in between. Overall the show was super and what i have learnt from them is to preserve and conserve one's heritage, customs, culture and traditions.

I found it an absolutely amazing experience witnessing the cultural shows at the Sauraha Tharu Culture House, when visiting Nepal. These shows were nothing short of spectacular, leaving a lasting impression on all of us who had the privilege of experiencing them then. Moreover, beyond the sheer entertainment value, these performances served as invaluable educational experiences, offering invaluable insights into the history, beliefs, and values that shape Tharu identity. For anyone seeking an unforgettable cultural experience that transcends boundaries and enriches the soul, these shows come highly recommended.

Chitwan National Park, located in Sauraha, Nepal, is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers. Covering over 932 square km of forested plains and grasslands, the park boasts diverse flora and fauna. Established in 1973, it is Nepal's first national park and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Visitors can spot exotic species such as the one-horned rhino, Bengal tiger, wild elephants, and Ghariyal crocodiles.
I really loved the park. It’s got beautiful landscapes and amazing vegetation. Went in a jeep tour and then in a canoe and walk tour. Managed to see quite a few rhinos, elephants, crocodiles, quite some birds and another couple of animals. But nevertheless I enjoyed the landscapes and the atmosphere.
Andrea G — Google review
This is a conservation area where we saw crocodiles, rhinos, monkeys, so many amazing birds, and sadly, chained elephants. We took a jeep safari, did a couple jungle walks, visited the crocodile and elephant breeding centers, and went on a canoe ride down the river. It’s a neat experience but honestly the chained elephants ruin the whole trip for me. Even the babies had their legs chained 😞
Noelle M — Google review
Chitwan National Park is a must-visit for wildlife enthusiasts. Known for its rich biodiversity, it offers a chance to spot rhinos, tigers, elephants, and various bird species. There are many activities like jungle safaris-on elephant back and jeep, canoe rides, birdwatching and multi day jungle walking. The lush landscapes and Tharu cultural programs add to its charm. However, Sauraha, main entry point can can get crowded during peak season and is unreasonably expensive. V

An Unforgettable and Thrilling Safari Experience! My recent safari at Chitwan National Park was nothing short of spectacular. From start to finish, it was an experience that met what I expect for this day and the weather was perfect as always in Nepal. We opted for the jeep safari, and it was the perfect choice. Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable, pointing out animals we would have easily missed and sharing fascinating facts about the ecosystem. The driver was also highly skilled, navigating the terrain with care and ensuring we were always at a safe and respectful distance from the wildlife. And the wildlife, We were so lucky. In just one trip, we spotted a majestic rhinoceros grazing near a marsh, saw a herd of spotted deer, observed crocodiles basking on the riverbanks, and were mesmerized by the vibrant birdlife. The anticipation of turning a corner and not knowing what you'll see is truly exhilarating. What stood out the most, besides the incredible sightings, was the overwhelming feeling of safety throughout the entire journey. The jeep felt sturdy and secure, and the team's expertise made us feel completely at ease, allowing us to fully immerse ourselves in the beauty of the jungle. If you are considering a safari in Nepal, do not hesitate. Chitwan National Park is a gem, and a jeep safari is the way to go. A heartfelt thank you to the team for an absolutely amazing and unforgettable adventure. I would give it 10 stars if I could.

Nestled above the bustling main street in Sauraha, Royal Kitchen and Bar is a charming haven that truly captures the essence of comfort dining. During my time volunteering at a nearby elephant sanctuary, I found myself returning almost daily to this delightful spot. first the prompt service, you will feel welcomed as soon you enter. Second, the food, we tried butter naan and chicken butter masala, so good on indian taste profile, 10/10 naan..thin&layered. butter chicken just melts in your mouth. we had grilled chicken, perfectly cooked, side with Greek Salad..good enough dressing.. and we had Sizzler..chicken quantity could have been little extra, though veggies were fine.

Shantiko Kitchen, a charming establishment located in Sauraha, offered a delightful dining experience. This cozy eatery impressed with its delectable pizzas adorned generously with various toppings and boasting a mouthwatering homemade flavor. The ambiance of the place was also commendable. However, their chocolate cookies proved to be overly sweet for some palates. One disappointing aspect was the Paneer Katti roll, which lacked moistness and had limited fillings.
Shantiko Kitchen in Chitwan is an absolute gem! The food and drinks here are simply umamig—bursting with rich flavors, fresh ingredients, and a perfect balance of spices. Every dish is crafted with love and care, making each bite a delightful experience. The ambiance is warm and inviting, creating the perfect space to relax and enjoy a nourishing meal. Restaurant
Sunset View Restaurant and Bar is a popular spot located along the Rapti River, offering breathtaking sunset views. It's an ideal place to unwind after a day of safari or jungle exploration. The ambiance is laid-back, with the option to relax under hay-roofs during summer. While some visitors have experienced longer wait times for their orders, many appreciate the beautiful scenery and enjoyable atmosphere. The restaurant offers delicious BBQ and beer, although some guests found the cocktails to be lacking.
The view and the experience you receive is really great. You can feel the cool air under one of the hay-roof during summer too & the feeling is so good. But I had to wait long time to gety order.

The food is exceptional and Mr Yogi (the owner) is a very knowledgeable local that will point you in the right direction to find the tour that bests suits you! Just please be careful I only planned on having 1 beer at this place but ended up staying all night because of how much fun it is!

Great little place. Don't even think of going here if you're snobbish or pretentious. What you get here is unpretentious service with a smile and a whole heap of hospitality. If you're going to complain about Mosquitoes and "flying worms" (What the hell are those???) then stay indoors, this is the Chitwan Jungle after all. This place is situated on the River Bank with excellent views.

Just in one word: AMAZING!!! - Nice staff! I felt so welcome! - Beautiful place. Even saw a wild rhino while having lunch! - Clean! Hot showers. Nice room. - Many options for activities! - Extra applause for the kitchen: I really, really enjoyed all of the meals. With fresh veggies from their own garden. And the home-made cordon blue with spinach: mmmm.. Keep doing the great job you're doing! Wish you many more happy guests like me!! You really deserve it! Dhanyabad! Namaste! A beautiful and peaceful small resort with lovely people. Slightly remote (15 min walk) from the touristy village, quite with great view in nature, even with elephants crossing. Closed by to Chitwan National Park. Great food (organic) spacious and nice rooms. Tour guide Deniz answers passionately every question about culture and nature. Various nice activities are offered. Owner cares for nature / elephant rescue ramped up, local community and his staff. Highly recommend it!

Oh Sapana, you were a dream. ✨ My stay at Sapana Village Lodge was nothing short of incredible. The rooms were beautifully spacious, with the comfort of hot showers and air-conditioning after long days exploring Chitwan. What truly made this place special, though, was the heart behind it. The staff and hosts welcomed me like family, kind, attentive and always going above and beyond. A huge thank you to guides Sahil and Dinesh for sharing your deep knowledge of the jungle, the wildlife, and the local way of life. I left with a full heart and a mind buzzing with everything I learned. Sapana isn’t just a lodge, it’s a community first experience that I’ll never forget.

Great Place to explore Chitwan, really enjoyed my time at the lodge and the staff is friendly, caring and the manager was really invested in helping us wherever he could. The tours and guides you can book trough them are highly recommendable. The whole project is rooted in the region, has an enormous beneficial impact trough their multiple NGO projects and a great philosophy towards hospitality, wildlife and impactful business. I can highly recommend

Despite Nepal’s monsoon season and the fact that we were one of the only guests at the time, we had a great stay at Sapana Lodge. We had the impression that staff is well organized and there was nothing we had to worry about. Special thanks to Dinesh, our safari guide, who showed us around the national park with his great experience of Chitwan’s local flora & fauna.

I was drawn to Sapana Village because of the ethical treatment of elephants, and they did not disappoint! They do not allow tourist riding and do not chain the female elephants and allow them to roam freely. They have 24/7 caretakers each specific to each elephant. I did the Love the Giants elephant program and I have nothing but amazing things to say. All the staff were incredible and went out of their way to help me (even at the very last minute) make the most of my (short) time in Chitwan. The elephant program with Dinesh Giri was absolutely incredible. He was very knowledgeable and clearly cared about the animals and environments. I learned so much and had an amazing time getting up close and personal with the elephants while remaining respectful. I sadly didn’t have time to stay in the lodge, but I cannot wait to come back and bring my family and actually stay in the lodge! The staff still treated me as if I were a guest. What I did see of the lodge (restaurant, bathrooms and reception), it’s very well maintained, clean and comfortable. Food was excellent. Cannot recommend enough!

Had a wonderful stay at sapana resort during our visit to Chitwan. The lodge gives you a perfect experience of sublimity with nature. The resort is very well maintained and the blend of rustic arrangement with the modern amenities makes it a perfect place to unwind for your holidays. The staff is well mannered and always eager to help. They also have a good kitchen which serves you with some sumptuous meals - must try is the pizza here. The resort also arranged for half day and full day safaries for us. The guide Dinesh Giri was very knowledgeable and tirelessly explained to us every flora we explored and every fauna we spotted. When you visit this place your trip will remain incomplete without a guided tour by Mr. Giri. Thank you Sapana for making our holiday a memorable one!
