Vyborg in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Vyborg, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Vyborg appeals to visitors with its unusual blend of Russian and Scandinavian heritage, visible in its medieval street plan and mix of Swedish, Finnish, and Russian architecture. The city’s main landmark is Vyborg Castle, a 13th-century fortress on an island offering views over the harbor and old town. Nearby, Monrepos Park on the shores of the Gulf of Finland is known for its romantic landscape design, rocky coastline, and pavilions. The compact center, with sights like the Market Hall and Round Tower, makes it easy to explore the town’s history and coastal atmosphere on foot.
With favorites like Sushi Panda, Medved', and Vyborg Castle State Museum, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Nord-West and Sushi Panda so you can get the best taste of Vyborg while you’re here. Vyborg Castle State Museum is a medieval Swedish fortress located on an island in Vyborg Bay. Originally built in 1293, the castle has undergone significant alterations over the centuries. It now serves as a local history museum with various exhibition halls. One of its main attractions is St Olafs Tower, offering panoramic views of the town. The castle symbolizes the city's rich history, which has played a significant role in the histories of Sweden, Finland, and Russia.
I visited the Vyborg Castle State Museum and was thoroughly impressed by its beauty. The castle itself is a stunning example of medieval architecture, set against the picturesque backdrop of Vyborg. The museum offers a rich display of historical artifacts, providing deep insights into the region's history. Walking through its ancient halls and climbing its towers was like stepping back in time. The scenic views from the top are breathtaking and well worth the climb. Overall, the Vyborg Castle State Museum is a must-visit for anyone interested in history and architecture.

Kids under 16 can get a free ticket! (Not valid for the tower). 🥳 However, people under 16 cannot visit this island without an adult. 😔

Nice museum even just entrance ticket to the island ( 100rub for Russian and 200 rub for foreigners but foreigners can enter the island with 100rub if you buy ticket in the machine)

Museums are definetely not worth it, but you should 100% stroll around the castle itself. Very nice views, vibes are different from other places in the whole country (well it is the only real preserved medieval castle in all of Russia). 100% recommend but DO NOT TAKE PHOTOS with people dressed like knights and ladies, they will take all your money and then some!

Worth enough to visit ! The museum tell us a lot about the history of Vyborg. Most of discriptions are written in Russian but unexpectedly there are some English, also! +At the end of October, some parts of the castle were under construction so I couldn't see the whole Tips: They offer a special discount for Russian student card holders! And I'm not sure about international student ID card but at least we can try it :)

Definitely a must in Vyborg, still under restoration in some parts of the castle. But a mission up the stairs to the viewing platform over the city of Vyborg, an mediaeval fortress town.

Fantastic museum with several very different exhibitions, amongst them one being about the civic history of the Finnish period of Wyborg and the ecological make up of the region. Small and sweet and I would highly recommend!

The Old Cathedral of Vyborg, a remarkable historical landmark, holds a significant place in the city's past. Constructed in the 15th century, it transitioned through various religious affiliations—starting as a Catholic church, then Lutheran, and finally becoming the Orthodox Cathedral of the Nativity. This majestic structure served as an essential spiritual center until its services ceased in 1793 due to devastating fires that left it in ruins.
Belfry and ruins of the Old Cathedral. The first Roman Catholic Church was built in Vyborg in mid of XIV century. Present belfry and cathedral were built during the last decade of the XV century. In mid of XVI century, Sweden adopted Lutheranism as the state religion, and Finns had to do so too. The upper part of the belfry was added in the XIX century. First time, the cathedral was badly damaged in 1710 when Admiral General Count Theodore Apraksin (1661-1728) captured the city from Swedes during the Great Northern War of 1700-1721. Citizens didn't want to restore the cathedral and Tsar Peter I of All Great, Little and White Russias (1672-1725) financed restoration from his own funds. Old cathedral was abandoned in mid of XIX century when new cathedral was built in Vyborg. Since 1913, it became the Regimental Church of 8th Finland's Shooter Regiment of Russian Imperial Army. Since 1918, it has become the Garrison Church of Finnish Army. Church was badly damaged in the process of assault of Vyborg on March 12-13, 1940, during Soviet-Finnish Armed Conflict aka Winter War of 1939-1940. Although there were no fierce street combats in Vyborg because the city was abandoned by the Finnish Army without resistance. Cathedral badly suffered in 1944. Vyborg, 🇷🇺Russian Federation🇷🇺. (Translated by Google) The ruins are carefully fenced, and of course, it’s impossible to even imagine what the cathedral looked like. It is only possible to imagine the scale of the building itself, which commands respect. The cathedral was built in the 15th century and was Catholic, Lutheran, and Orthodox. Now there are ruins that cannot be called picturesque. Perhaps only the restored bell tower, now the Clock Tower, somehow brightens up the depressing impression and drives away thoughts of frailty.

(Translated by Google) It is difficult to evaluate something that cannot be evaluated. If only for the reason that I don’t know what it looked like before. But I see only the restored bell tower of the Cathedral - the current Clock Tower. Well, the Cathedral itself is now in such a state that it is unlikely that anyone will ever undertake to restore it. It would be more honest to “clean up” this site, removing the rather dangerous ruins, open to everyone, and erect some kind of memorial chapel in this place, reminiscent of the former greatness of this place.

(Translated by Google) It's a pity that everything is abandoned and turned into a trash heap. It is unlikely that they will restore it, of course, which is a pity. Such buildings are always beautiful and attract tourists. Since the city is small, it’s not difficult to stop by and take a look at the past. But there is nothing to see there, and this attraction is dubious; there is something to see even without it.

For many centuries it served as an outpost in the defense of the city. Even during the Great Patriotic War it played its role: it was on the spire of the Clock Tower that the red flag was hoisted as a point in the liberation of Vyborg from the troops of the Finnish army. Produce market
The Market Hall of Vyborg, also known as the Old Vyborg Market or Central Market, is a historic marketplace offering a wide variety of goods. Visitors can find Finnish products and the city's famous spicy pretzels with a history dating back to the 14th century. The market hosts Christmas markets and folk festivals where crafts reminiscent of Swedish Vikings and knights are available for purchase.
Delicious Russian food ,red and black caviar, honey from mountain , regenal vegetables , oriental food, nuts, mushooms, berries, there is a parking space. This place is not far from the railway station prices are middle but quality is high. Try to find English speaking guy to make better purchases.

Kruglaya Bashnya, a historical military tower from the 14th century, now serves as a unique restaurant with a medieval theme. The establishment offers an array of delectable dishes that are beautifully presented and of high quality, all at affordable prices. Their menu also includes a noteworthy selection of vegetarian options, with the pumpkin soup being highly recommended. Not only is the food exceptional, but the service provided is also commendable.
Here in lovely Vyborg/Viipuri in Russia, a city close to the Finnish border, there is the Round Tower Restaurant right on the market square and the market hall. As the name suggests this restaurant is inside a round tower located in the center of the city. It is a tower from the 16th century and you reach the restaurant through a circular stair and there are many wall paintings on the way up. Having reached the top there is the Round Tower Restaurant with a wooden ceiling and many more paintings on the wall of famous figures on the history of the region. The food served here is delicious. We had several courses and started with a plate of herring with potatoes and onions and on another plate there was rolled ham with cream sauce. As next course came a Quiche with sea food and an apple slice. Then we had medallions with cream sauce, as well as omelet with meat and boiled potatoes and cabbage. And followed by vanilla ice cream and fruits as dessert. All course were very delicious. From Vyborg, Russia with Love! Dr. Dr. Immanuel Fruhmann

The Transfiguration Cathedral in Vyborg is a renowned church located about 2 kilometers from the city center. The cathedral, painted in blue, is a popular tourist attraction and draws crowds during Christmas and Easter. The cathedral was built by decree of Catherine II in 1786 and has undergone several architectural changes over the years. Visitors can admire the beautiful small square with cobblestones in front of the cathedral, making it a very photogenic spot for taking pictures.
Beautiful and silent cathedral.

(Translated by Google) The cathedral was built by order of Catherine II in 1787-1793. Architect Nikolay Lvov. Not many buildings of this brilliant architect of the Classical era have survived. All of them are unusual, unique and original. This includes the Priory Palace, the Cathedral in Torzhok, the boulder bridge, the pyramid, of course “Kulich and Easter”, the Post Office and the gates of the Peter and Paul Fortress. This city is decorated with the wonderful Transfiguration Cathedral. You can come to Vyborg just to see it.

(Translated by Google) Simultaneously with the construction of the Lutheran Church in 1783, by order of Catherine the Second, it was decided to begin the construction of a new Orthodox Church for the needs of the Russian population of Vyborg. The temple was consecrated on September 14, 1817. In 1826, a new side altar was installed on the left side in the name of the icon “Our Lady of All Who Sorrow.” In 1892, with the creation of the Vyborg diocese, the cathedral became a cathedral. In 1945, the church was mined, the archive was burned, and the icons were taken away. In 1947, the restoration of the cathedral began, but the old painting was restored in modern times. The colors turned out gloomy, blue and red colors prevail. It feels like the cathedral is very non-Russian, although it was built in a classic style for an Orthodox church.

Not a masterpiece, of course, there are many similar, well-preserved churches in Russia from the mid-to-late 18th century with very similar architecture. But THIS one is in ITS place! (Translated by Google) The cathedral was built by decree of Catherine II, issued on December 18, 1786, according to the design of the architect N.A. Lvov (with changes made by the Vyborg provincial architect I. Brockman, who reduced the size of the temple, leaving all the decor unchanged). Initially, the temple was built with a dome; its portico, located in front of the main entrance, consisted of columns of the Tuscan order. Over the next century, the temple regularly changed its appearance. Initially, the bell tower of this temple was the Clock Tower, but then a new bell tower was built, standing separately from it. Somewhat later, the temple and the bell tower were connected. A tower clock was installed on the bell tower of the cathedral in 1797, but its chiming began to interrupt the ringing of the clock from the neighboring tower of the city police department. In this regard, and also due to the dilapidation of the mechanism, they decided to dismantle the clock in the 19th century (again, the clock on the bell tower of the cathedral appeared only in 2012).

Krasnaya Ploshchad is a wide and beautiful square in Vyborg, featuring a large Lenin monument. It serves as a central gathering place with a festive atmosphere, offering a large Christmas tree, photo opportunities for families, and even a mini go-kart track for children. The square is surrounded by shops and showcases the historical and new Vyborg, blending old Finnish empire architecture with newer Soviet structures. Despite the erosion of some buildings, it remains an attractive location to explore.
Nice and central place. Lenin stands here proudly holding his hat in his hand. You can observe the historical and new Vyborg here. Old Finnish empire and newer soviet arhitecture all around, mixed shamelessly. Such a pity that all the buildings are slowly eroding.

I don't think I've tried this in other establishments. You are at a loss - what is it made of? The subtle sweetish notes with the aroma of tap water are really confusing.

(Translated by Google) My girlfriend and I came to eat and were disappointed. We won't come again. The girl ordered fish soup with cream for 350₽. and they brought it to her almost immediately... They thought that it had been prepared yesterday. After they brought the fish soup, I watched the girl eat it, and I was waiting for my beef stroganoff, which I already wanted to refuse because the girl had already eaten the fish soup. Well, since they brought it, they moved it.... Let the girl now watch me eat beef stroganoff for 450₽.🤷‍♂️ Unfortunately, the beef stroganoff was terrible...namely, the meat was tough, I couldn’t chew it and it felt like it wasn’t fresh, there was a lot of onion, that’s a lot! There's not enough cream( (Original)

Unpretentious menu: salad, borscht, piece of beef with mayonnaise and mashed potatoes. Very good indeed!

Sushi Panda is a delightful spot that offers an array of delicious dishes, including standout sushi sets and hearty udon with chicken. Diners appreciate the warm atmosphere and friendly staff, who go above and beyond to ensure a pleasant experience—one even crafted a special birthday surprise! While the wait times can be longer due to takeout orders, patrons agree that the quality of food makes it worthwhile.
Great sushi sets. The wait was longer than expected cause of the take out and delivery orders being cooked, but the wait was worth it. The quality of the sushi here is definitely higher than most sushi specialized restaurants in Saint Petersburg. Really, the flavor of their sushi makes you keep coming back for more.

This is a nice cafe with tasty food including a few vegi dishes. Staff was very friendly. They even made a cool birthday present for my wife. This cafe works till 11pm, not like the most of them (8-9pm). Location is very convenient. I totally recommend this place.

Nice place with small space. Tasty food, large portions but impression was a little spoiled by the long wait (about 45 minutes).

Special thanks to the waiter Danil for the service, one of the best waiters in my memory. The prices, by the way, are very loyal and pleasant. 5 out of 5. Restaurant
Nestled in the charming town of Wyborg, Medved' is a delightful restaurant that offers a unique dining experience. With its tasteful decor featuring stuffed birds and animals, the ambiance strikes a perfect balance between cozy and sophisticated. The atmosphere is calm, complemented by an excellent selection of music that enhances your meal without overwhelming your senses. Medved' boasts an impressive menu filled with hunting dishes, making it a haven for adventurous eaters.
This restaurant serves bear meat, venison meat, and quail meat, It was my first time eating bear and venison meat. The taste was good, but bear meat was not much different from beef, it was just a bit tougher, Deer meat is harder than bear meat, Quail meat is very delicious and juicy, The staff provided good service and gave good advice. Before going, I booked a table because there were quite a few people. It was a very memorable experience.👍🏻

We were looking die vegetarian options, which ist not so easy in Wyborg, and the nice waitress helped us find some dishes which weren't listed in the english menu. Very nice and it tasted good. So if you are not sure, just ask!

(Translated by Google) After the walk we decided to go to a restaurant for dinner. A restrained and pleasant interior, consistent with the name, stuffed birds and animals, but without excesses, everything in moderation. Interesting details. Calm atmosphere. A good selection of music that doesn't hurt your ears. Good menu, large selection of hunting dishes. We took the “For Two” set and homemade pickles. An excellent assortment of well-cooked meats with a side dish of vegetables. Pork, lamb, beef, chicken, the meat is tender and juicy. The vegetables are tasty, moderately fried. The dish is served in a roasting pan on a hot burner. Therefore it stays hot for a long time. The crispy pickles complement it perfectly. Rich blackcurrant juice is very aromatic. Fast and attentive service. The waitresses are smiling and friendly. We had a pleasant evening. Thank you.

Restaurant
Restaurant Espilya is a historic establishment located in the heart of Vyborg/Viipuri. The restaurant exudes grandeur with its elegant pavilion, high ceilings, and stylish interior. It offers a separate bistro for quick bites and has a fascinating history as it is a rebuilt version of the original 1898 restaurant that burnt down. Situated within the city park, it provides a nice ambience and good food, including vegetarian options.
Here at the Restaurant Espilä/Espilya, located in the center of the main park of the city of Vyborg/Viipuri, it has a special feeling of grandeur. The Espilä, can look back on a long history and its name is deriving from esplanades, a promenade, where in former times people used to spend there free time, is an expanded pavillion, very elegant, with high ceilings, fancy silver and stylish interior. It has much of a Grand Café with its splendor. The staff is friendly and the prices still reasonable, though they are in the upper segment for Vyborg standards. The atmosphere is nice and the seating comfortable. Since this place was recommended to me by my Finnish friends, I took the Espilä Cake, a nut cake with lots of cream and fruits on its top. Nice, quiet, quaint little place. The restaurant has a separate little bistro for a quick bite. Service is nice, and the food is good. The place is also quite fascinating, as it is a rebuilt version of the historic restaurant (est 1898) that burnt down in the previous century. A very unique place.
