Chambery in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Chambery, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Chambéry is a historic Alpine city known for its charming old town, arcaded streets, and the striking Château des Ducs de Savoie, once home to the rulers of the Savoy region. Its location makes it a convenient gateway to nearby lakes, including Lac du Bourget, and to ski resorts in the French Alps. Visitors can explore museums such as the Musée des Beaux-Arts and the Savoie departmental museum, and see landmarks like the whimsical Elephant Fountain. The city’s relaxed atmosphere, markets, and cafés offer an appealing contrast to the busier nearby hubs of Grenoble and Annecy.
With favorites like KFC, LE CORSAIRE Beer & Rooftop bar, and CASA SERRA byl'Entracte, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Subway and CASA SERRA byl'Entracte so you can get the best taste of Chambery while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Shopping
The Centre Commercial Chamnord is a one-story indoor shopping mall with over 80 stores and restaurants, offering various food options at different price points. The mall also features free Wi-Fi and a supermarket for convenient grocery shopping. There are ample seating options available, including benches both inside and outside the restaurants. A bus stop located just behind the mall provides easy access to Chambery center.
A convenient small mall with a good mix of stores. You’ll find clothing shops, a grocery store, a phone repair spot, and a few restaurants. It’s clean, easy to navigate, and a good place for quick shopping or errands. Nothing fancy, but it gets the job done!

This place is lovely, spatious with lots of facilities. Lovely shops. Lots of parking.

Good selection of stores. Unfortunately many were closed due to lock-down.

Great place to visit Action and carefoure are there for groceries.. Nice view outside the mall.. Indian restaurant must try...

Lovely loos and the biggest Carrefour on Earth (I think) I even managed to find several different types of lamb - in France this is unheard of!!! Helpful staff but too few - lovely meat, cheese and veg counters which are very well staffed though - massive Halal section lots of Vegan and free-from options and a good supply of Bjorg products which are often good. 10 million crisp flavours.
Coralie T — Google review
Big shopping Mall...all types of item are available ..not too expensive..best time for hanging with family.. discount and sales available during summer season.there is indian street food restaurant..best place to visiting during weekend..
ANANDI O — Google review
Selection of clothing brands is just okay. Nothing international brand. There's a big Carrefour inside. Few restaurants and cafe. Big parking space.
Molly L — Google review
A decent enough shopping centre. Lots of food options of varying prices, bathrooms are decent enough, there's a few shops for browsing as well as place to get groceries if you need it, plus there's a bus stop just out back which can take you to and from Chambéry centre. Also worth mentioning that there is a fair bit of seating even outside of the restaurants, etc. Probably about 8-10 benches inside and then about 6-7 outside. If you want to spend an afternoon here but are worried about being forced to spend money to take a break, that shouldn't be an issue here.

Located in the elegant Place des Elephants, the Fontaine des Éléphants is a must-see monument in Chambery. Built in 1838 to honor General Benoit de Boigne, a local hero, this fountain features four elephants spraying water through their trunks. The unique sculpture combines a fountain, a column, and a statue representing the elephants joined at their hindquarters. This distinctive feature has earned it the nickname "Les quatre sans cul."
Beautiful fountain with a nice area around it to sit and chill out. There are some nice shops around here too! If you come to Chambéry we really recommend the walking tour around the city! There are little bronze elephants on the pavement that you can follow around and get to see all of the sights. It's a beautiful 1-2 hour stroll with lots to see and freedom to stop or skip during the "tour".

3.5🌟 we reckon. On the way back from Annecy to Grenoble, we decided to stop in Chambery. It was still early. We were pleasantly surprised that the town has lots to offer too. We parked near the main square. As usual, there are lots of restaurants, cafes, ice-cream parlours at the square. Decided to stroll further after our evening drinks. We arrived at the fountain. Most fountains in larger towns we have seen are always grand and somewhat of a center piece. This one is no different. The elephants have their backs again the fountain, which is of course a defensive posture. As if to tell everyone, they are protecting the fountain. Walking further, we were greeted by several other monuments within the town. A worthwhile stopover with many sights to see.

Very beautiful historical fountain ⛲️ 😍 I don't know if the water is potable, but it doesn't look so. I used to sit in the near garden and enjoy reading.

Lovely French town with ample nice places to eat. Follow the brass elephants on the street beside the fountain for a self guided tour, going however quickly you like, to see some lovely old buildings built in typical French style.

La Fontaine des Éléphants in Chambéry is a true gem. The beauty of the sculpted elephants is simply breathtaking and the attention to detail is amazing. The fountain is surrounded by lush greenery, making it a peaceful and serene place to relax. The atmosphere is peaceful and calming, and it's a great place to take a break from the hustle and bustle of the city. I highly recommend visiting La Fontaine des Éléphants for anyone looking for a peaceful and beautiful oasis in Chambéry. Whether you're a local or a tourist, this stunning fountain is not to be missed.
Kermit P — Google review
The elephant heads with the steep mountain slopes in the background reminded me of Hannibal's army, climbing the Alps to conquest the ancient Rome. However, these elephants look like Indian elephants which is intriguing, as the ones used by Hannibal in the war against Romans were most probably African elephants (with much larger ears). Then I learned that the monument is actually dedicated to a French mercenary born in Chambery, who made his fortune in India (General Count de Boigne). Interesting monument, anyway! It's the symbol of the city and not to be missed if you're around.

Sandwich shop
Subway is a sandwich chain with locations all around France. The service is always great and the smokey chicken sandwich is delicious. Ihighly recommend this place!
My girlfriend and I ended up in Chambéry by accident when we lost faith in our Interrail-travel, we were very gloomy after we found out that we couldn't get to Italy by train. We were very hungry and felt like eating Subway ofc, when our "Knight in shining armor" with dreadlocks, rose behind the counter to our aid. He was the kindest most giving person i have meet while they were working. He helped us regain our faith in humanity again. I coundn't recommend a Subway over this one. Sry we didn't get your name... xD

Haute French restaurant
Restaurant Arborescent is a superb dining establishment offering exquisitely cooked dishes. The pollock, skillfully prepared, highlights the delicate essence of the fish. Accompanying this is a light and fluffy cauliflower mash that complements the meal perfectly. Caramelized onions and cauliflower florets add a pleasant saltiness to enhance the pure flavors of both the pollock and mash.
Nice and cosy, obviously not the cheapest in the area, but a very warm place to get on a diner with our half. Warm, dedicated and friendly service, the food is local, great and tasty, as well as the wine list with an excellent selection of famous ‘vignobles’. We have spent an excellent time there; I definitively recommend this restaurant for a great time in Chambery!

Ok restaurant with great service. But very slow, we stayed for 3 hours and we’re still not done eating everything because it was almost midnight and we were working the next day.
Dalal B — Google review
Fabulously prepared meal. I had the pollock which was delicately prepared, focused on the subtle flavor of the fish. Wonderfully accompanied by a light, airy cauliflower mash. The caramelized onions and cauliflower florets were pleasantly salty, punctuating the pure flavors of the pollock and mash. The dessert was a light and airy lemon and basil eclair accompanied with a tart lemon sorbet. Wonderful meal.
