Located in the elegant Place des Elephants, the Fontaine des Éléphants is a must-see monument in Chambery. Built in 1838 to honor General Benoit de Boigne, a local hero, this fountain features four elephants spraying water through their trunks. The unique sculpture combines a fountain, a column, and a statue representing the elephants joined at their hindquarters. This distinctive feature has earned it the nickname "Les quatre sans cul."
Beautiful fountain with a nice area around it to sit and chill out. There are some nice shops around here too! If you come to Chambéry we really recommend the walking tour around the city! There are little bronze elephants on the pavement that you can follow around and get to see all of the sights. It's a beautiful 1-2 hour stroll with lots to see and freedom to stop or skip during the "tour".

3.5🌟 we reckon. On the way back from Annecy to Grenoble, we decided to stop in Chambery. It was still early. We were pleasantly surprised that the town has lots to offer too. We parked near the main square. As usual, there are lots of restaurants, cafes, ice-cream parlours at the square. Decided to stroll further after our evening drinks. We arrived at the fountain. Most fountains in larger towns we have seen are always grand and somewhat of a center piece. This one is no different. The elephants have their backs again the fountain, which is of course a defensive posture. As if to tell everyone, they are protecting the fountain. Walking further, we were greeted by several other monuments within the town. A worthwhile stopover with many sights to see.

Very beautiful historical fountain ⛲️ 😍 I don't know if the water is potable, but it doesn't look so. I used to sit in the near garden and enjoy reading.

Lovely French town with ample nice places to eat. Follow the brass elephants on the street beside the fountain for a self guided tour, going however quickly you like, to see some lovely old buildings built in typical French style.

A hidden gem in France. This is such a picturesque beautiful little town, with narrow streets and lovely restaurants. Slap bang in the middle of the French Alps.

This is the most famous location in chambery. You can visit all the famous place of chambery near to it. Statue is very fabulous and maintained it very well. Kids enjoying near to it.

La Fontaine des Éléphants in Chambéry is a true gem. The beauty of the sculpted elephants is simply breathtaking and the attention to detail is amazing. The fountain is surrounded by lush greenery, making it a peaceful and serene place to relax. The atmosphere is peaceful and calming, and it's a great place to take a break from the hustle and bustle of the city. I highly recommend visiting La Fontaine des Éléphants for anyone looking for a peaceful and beautiful oasis in Chambéry. Whether you're a local or a tourist, this stunning fountain is not to be missed.
Kermit P — Google review
The elephant heads with the steep mountain slopes in the background reminded me of Hannibal's army, climbing the Alps to conquest the ancient Rome. However, these elephants look like Indian elephants which is intriguing, as the ones used by Hannibal in the war against Romans were most probably African elephants (with much larger ears). Then I learned that the monument is actually dedicated to a French mercenary born in Chambery, who made his fortune in India (General Count de Boigne). Interesting monument, anyway! It's the symbol of the city and not to be missed if you're around.

The Château des Ducs de Savoie is an ancient castle that currently serves as a government office and a small museum of history. It boasts a well-maintained interior of the new palace, and visitors can enjoy breathtaking views from the mi-rond tower. Additionally, an intriguing exhibition showcasing historical maps of the region is on display. The castle is one of the most exquisite sites in Chambery, making it a must-visit destination for anyone interested in history and architecture.
Great guided tour (Jasper's english was greatly appreciated). 1.5 hr - lots of Savoy history. Wonderful 😊

Would be nice to have more boards with details on it, like working hours, or something general. Not everything needs to be googled or require tours and reservations.

A big castle... and a big disappointment I decided to visit this castle after reading countless glowing reviews online. A majestic fortress, they said... a must-see, they insisted. Well, they clearly saw something I didn’t. At first glance, it looked promising — the outer walls, the imposing gate, and the bastions are undeniably impressive. So far, so good. I opted for the guided tour, which also promised the “complete” experience. That’s when things started going downhill. A large portion of the original structures has been destroyed over time. In their place, new buildings have been erected — and they don't fit in at all with the old buildings. These new buildings now serve as administrative offices. Translation: over 75% of the complex is closed to the public. So much for the “complete” tour. The castle was entirely renovated in the 20th century — and yes, it shows. For example, the interior of the "Treasury Tower" (the only tower we were actually allowed to visit) looks like a set from a cheap movie . What did the guided tour include? The fortified gate (which, fun fact, you can visit for free anyway) The chapel, half-empty The treasury tower, almost empty A cellar, entirely empty The guide did his best and shared plenty of historical facts. But unless you're already passionate about the Duchy of Savoy, the whole lecture might feel more like a podcast you didn’t mean to start. In conclusion, two things worth noting: Many of the pictures associated with this tourist site have little or nothing to do with the actual castle. Likely uploaded by people hoping to score a few social media points. Several reviews mention a “panoramic view of the city.” I’ll post a picture and let you judge whether that view was worth the hype.
Catalin H — Google review
Outside it is a nice Castle, however you can’t go in to see the whole place without a guide tour. Guide tours are mostly on weekends and just in French. You have to book the guide tour in the tourist center of the city. By the way, you can visit the museum of the castle for free.
Alejandro C — Google review
Savoy is a former state that included Genève, Turin and Nice a few centuries ago. It's hard to believe nowadays that these famous cities from Switzerland, Italy and France were part of the same country, which doesn't exist anymore. Even more strange: the capital of this state was, for about 250 years, the little town of Chambery. This is what the museum is all about: the history of the Savoyard State. We took the free tour and enjoyed it a lot. The description of the artifacts is in both French and English, so there's not really need for the guided tour (unless you don't speak anyone of these languages). In addition to the historical Savoyard exhibits, the visitors have the opportunity to take some instagramic pictures from the top level terrace: the old town rooftops look great at sunset with the Alps in the background.

The Musée des Beaux-Arts de Chambéry is located in a former granary at the town's entrance, redesigned by architect Francois Pelaz in the 19th century. Initially housed in the Town Hall, it was relocated after Hector Garriod Baron offered his collection of 140 works. The museum showcases paintings from the Middle Ages to the 20th century.
Very worthwhile museum to visit if you’re visiting Chambéry, or just passing through. You could probably spend up to an hour here looking at the collection, with a temporary exhibition on the first floor. Information is entirely in French, but the art speaks for itself. The museum has various lockers available (€1 coin required), and the café-bar looks like a very pleasant place to relax in.
Marques — Google review
Very beautiful place in Chambéry to explore the history of art in the city. The entry was free, and you should put your bag in lockers. The place was very quiet, calm and not crowded, however people started to come when it's close to closing time. Their was a little space for children activities visiting the museum to enjoy paintings too. The staff service was very good. One of the museum's guide offered me a photo when he saw me struggling taking one to myself😅 thanks a lot. There was a souvenir shop for the museum.
Melad M — Google review
Small regional museum, only a few paintings on one floor for a population of 140.000 (the temporary exhibition was closed in winter). Price is not expensive (3€ for a visit of 1hour) and there is also a restaurant and underground parking.

Beautiful art work. Free entry for University Students! No English translations here which is totally understandable but a bit of a pity for me personally.
Katelyn — Google review
While passing through Chambéry, I came across another beautiful ancient building right in front of the majestic Palais de Justice. Unsurprisingly, it turned out to be the Musée des Beaux Arts of Chambéry. Inside, I was struck by the surprising blend of purple modernity coming from the restaurant of the first floor and the building's timeless greatness. After a very pleasant interaction with the man at the ticket counte, and a free entry, we made our way upstairs. The staircase itself was a work of art. Divided by period, we had the chance to admire majestic religious paintings and monumental works depicting mythological and historical events. These paintings left us speechless, and all we could do was sit on the bench in front of them, mesmerized. On the next floor, we discovered the calm and immersive works of Xavier de Maistre and François Cachoud, two of Chambéry’s most talented and renowned artists. Cachoud’s use of pale blue and green tones in his nightscapes created a visual effect beyond words, while the serenity of De Maistre’s 'Paysage à la bergère' was unmatched. It made you wish you could step into the painting, sit beneath a tree, and watch the sun rise and set. Leaving this remarkable place, I felt as though I had traveled through time and across the world. Don't miss this palace of art and beauty when visiting Chambéry.

Cathédrale Saint-François-de-Sales is a historic monument renowned for its exquisite trompe l'oeil ceiling paintings, stained glass and organ. The entire area surrounding the cathedral in Chambery boasts of stunning architecture that is as beautiful as the interior of the church itself. This medieval town has many preserved buildings with original exteriors but stunningly beautiful interiors. The inside architecture is particularly striking, highlighted by the painted ceiling that adds to its beauty and grandeur.
Lovely church in the heart of Chambéry. There’s a beautiful garden right next door as well. A must-see when in Chambéry.
Leung — Google review
Chambery Cathedral has unusual trompe l'oeil decoration to the Gothic ribbed vaults (painted to look 3-dimensional) with monochrome murals on the walls of the nave. Apparently the largest in Europe. Worth a visit. Allow 20-30 minutes.
PG G — Google review
Amazing cathedral in the heart of Chambery. The architecture and stained glass windows are a must to visit this place in the city. I really loved how the light come into the church by the windows. One of my favorite places in the city.
Alejandro C — Google review
One of the most beautiful and unique cathedrals in existence. The strange and infinite feeling of the paintings was enhanced by the organ being tested for a recital later, it resonated through the walls and the floors. Worth a visit just to experience the paintings, they add a grandeur and make the place seem huge
Julianne T — Google review
Chambery is a very nice medieval town. Many buildings stunningly beautiful inside while retaining their original outside
Rani V — Google review
Nestled in the heart of Chambéry, upon stepping through its doors, I was instantly captivated by the peaceful atmosphere and intricate details of the building's design. The soaring vaulted ceilings, delicate stained glass windows, and ornate stone carvings transport visitors back in time, offering a glimpse into the rich history and devotion that has shaped this cathedral over centuries. Despite the grandeur of its size, the space retains an intimate and welcoming feel. Throughout my visit, I found myself spending time admiring the artistic elements that adorn the cathedral, from the captivating statues and detailed tapestries to the beautifully preserved altar. In addition to its historical and architectural significance, the cathedral also serves as an active place of worship, hosting masses, concerts, and special events. The priests and staff were warm and inviting, adding to the overall sense of community that permeates the space.

The Museum of Charmettes - House of Jean-Jacques Rousseau is a beautifully preserved historic home surrounded by immaculate gardens. It offers a rare glimpse into the past, allowing visitors to experience the lifestyle of the time. The house is adorned with fantastic trompe l'oeil and rare papiers peints, while the garden exudes peace and poetry, reflecting the spirit of Rousseau. Although sparsely furnished inside, it provides an informative audio commentary and a tranquil atmosphere.
Wonderful natural scenery and lots of history, les Charmettes is really a charming place to visit. Free entrance in the building, a bit moist inside, not quite a place to stay more, but it is really a joy of spirit and soul, especially given the surroundings. Must be visited, for sure.
TAVI M — Google review
The place is very beautiful and rich in details, you can grab your book and sit chill in the backyard garden. The entrance is free but you can get an audio guide for 2 euros (I think). There was a small souvenir shop to get Rossoeau books, postcards, bookmarks, and these other fancy stuffs. There were also free postcards from the maison too.
Melad M — Google review
We visited Les Charmettes on a Saturday morning in early Autumn and were pleasantly surprised by the lack of crowds. It would definitely have been possible to channel Rousseau by being a 'Solitary Walker' in the grounds. The Reception at entrance was discreet and unfussy. Somewhat ironically, given Rousseau's belief that the state should act as an agent that enforces and legislates freedom, there was no admission fee nor were we asked for any ID. We were left alone to wander around the house and in the gardens. The house is relatively modest compared to, say, Voltaire's place at Ferney-Voltaire and it's clear that Rousseau mainly visited it during the summer. Nonetheless, Les Charmettes has a real 'sense of place'. It provides a deeper understanding of the factors that shaped Rousseau's views, not least about the natural world and man's place in it. It's also the place where he discovered love, although curiously there are very few traces of his mistress, Françoise-Louise de Warens, who actually owned the house.
C O — Google review
The gardens are worth a visit just on their own, the view and the outside of the house are very beautiful. Inside the house is a bit sparse but interesting if you have read the relevant works.
Julianne T — Google review
My visit to this wonderfully historic home has been the highlight of my trip to France from England. The house is full of fantastic trompe l'oeil and rare papiers peints and the garden too is a delight. An incredibly peaceful, poetic place full of the spirit of Rousseau. A must if you are in the area.
Deborah G — Google review
It's a peaceful house, with a green garden in a little vale. It's only 30 minutes on foot from the center of Chambéry. The visit of the house is very refreshing after the slope, you can see different room, especially the bedroom of Madame de Warrens and the bedroom of Jean-Jacques Rousseau. The garden is a calm place to stay for a few minutes in the deckchair. Is also a quiet place to do a picnic on the evening.

It boasts impressive collections that serve as references for Savoy's archeology, history, and ethnography.
Truly excellent museum with exhibits about the history of the Savoie region and contemporary issues too. Seems hidden away, but it has been recently renovated, breathing new life into the exhibits. Staff are very friendly, and offered me an English language translation book of the main information throughout the permanent collection. There is a small museum shop and plenty of lockers next to the toilets on the first floor.

A museum that combines the new with very old and interesting pieces, the inner courtyard is incredibly beautiful and the entrance is free
Sasha — Google review
A superb museum that offers profound insights into the history and culture of the Savoie region. Apparently it was reopened in 2023 after a €25 million renovation and four years of work. It shows. Start at the top (second floor) and work down. The well-chosen exhibits are arranged chronologically (paleolithic - present) but there are also themes ('Power & Territory'; 'Population & Movement'; 'Resources & Food' etc.). Make sure you leave enough time to see the 14th century Cruet murals on the walkway overlooking the Reception area, which are a highlight of the museum. Discovered in the Château de la Rive in Cruet (Savoie department), these depict scenes taken from 'Girart de Vienne', an old French 'chanson de geste' by Bertrand de Bar-sur-Aube. The staff are very friendly and one gets the impression that they really want you to enjoy your visit. In short, this museum is exceptional.
C O — Google review
We truly enjoyed our visit to this museum. It is a modern exhibit in a beautiful old building in the center of Chambéry. The exhibits are well-organized and educational. The history of the Savoie region is rich and interesting and this visit provided context for the cultural, political, social, and anthropological history that has shaped the region. I wish we had more time to spend as we were here for nearly two hours! We do not speak/read French so we probably could have gone through a bit quicker but we’re using google translate with the placards, although the videos offer English subtitles which was very useful.

Rotonde Ferroviaire is a remarkable circular cast iron structure, dating back to 1906-1910, serving as a home for up to 72 locomotives when not in use. Despite suffering damage during the war, it has been restored and remains an integral part of the railway infrastructure. This "Eiffel" type monument is highly regarded and popular among locals.

So, the Rotonde SNCF in Chambéry is huge—you gotta admit, it’s kinda cool to just sneak a peek inside this massive old train building. 🏢🚂 But honestly, our group left feeling totally ripped off after paying a pretty steep price for the guided tour. 💸 What you get? Barely more than a quick look inside the grand building. 👀 Sure, the train turntable thing is still functional, which sounds promising, right? 🎡 Nope. It’s not going to be operated during your visit. We were told the only way to maybe see it in action is to roll the dice again on another tour—same price, same boring speech, and no guarantees. 🎲😴 We went around 3pm, so naturally, the SNCF workers were just slowly moseying around doing basically nothing, stuck between lunch break and clocking out for the day. 🕒😐 No old trains to hop on or explore either — you only get to look at them from the outside, which is kinda lame. 🚫🚂 And the guide? Oh man. Imagine a walking, talking vintage recording playing a monotone drone about stuff that’s mostly unrelated to the place. 🎙️😩 Instead, it’s all Parisian politics and European conflicts from when the building was constructed. Yeah, thanks, but no thanks. 🙄 Long story short: not worth the money, but hey, this is the only way to get inside. So if you’re super curious or a huge train nerd, maybe give it a shot—but don’t expect anything exciting. 💤

The performance hall offers remarkable comfort with easily accessible seating. Additionally, it presents diverse programs catering to adults, children, and teenagers for the upcoming season. (Translated by Google) Thank you Bernard! Your opinion confirms the discomfort I felt last week at the Tiken Jah Fakoly concert on January 24. Coming from a big city and ignorant of local customs, I protested when the agent responsible for “welcoming” me (I emphasize the quotation marks) wanted to direct me to the rows furthest from the stage. Having bought a seat in the gold square, I refused to let it turn into a lead because I was 15 minutes late. The impertinent guy, short of arguments, but no smirks, not wanting to lose face and me not wanting to lose my place, I chose, faced with this injustice, to resolve this misunderstanding between civilized people. Faithful to the spirit of the illustrious character who gave his name to the place, I chose to resist. A one-off but opportunistic spectator finally returned this ill-gotten property to me. The reseller explained to me 3 days later that the validity of a ticket applies according to the rules set by the operator. So, you can be legally cheated if you arrive late as mentioned in the conditions of access to the room. But, so what? Why blindly enforce this rule and remain blind to the thousand transgressions of another? In this case, the prohibited use of cell phones during a performance. Rule expressly mentioned in the internal regulations. You responded to a spectator who was inconvenienced, another evening, by the stifling heat of the place, will you be able to comfort me after having been chilled, last Friday, by her icy welcome? “The 20th century will be contentious or it will not be” (André Malraux). (Original) Merci Bernard !
