Basilica di Santa Maria Assunta is a historic site, originally built in 313AD and featuring the largest floor mosaic in Western Christianity. The complex includes the Crypt of Excavations with geometric mosaics and terracotta flooring from an earlier stage, as well as the Fresco Crypt near the altar, housing faded yet beautiful 12th-century frescoes.
Highlight of the small town. This magnificent basilica, originally founded in the 4th century, is a masterpiece of early Christian architecture. The highlight is the stunning mosaic floor, one of the largest and most intricate in the world, depicting biblical scenes and early Christian symbols. The basilica’s long history, including its role as a major religious center in the Roman Empire, adds to its significance.you should definitely download the audio guide then you can really appreciate the the stories of the mosaics.

A cradle of our faith for my country. From here the misionary work went out to the east. Glorious holly place, with a lot of history, beautiful mosaics and old architecture. Cript is amazing with lot of relics.
Rok S — Google review
One of the most important church seats in this part of Italy, also for Slovenia, Austria and Croatia. Basilica is build on the 1. century Roman mosaics, that were covered in 4. century by other level of mosaics. On top of those two layers of mosaics the present church was built. The Bell tower dated from 11. century. The three naval church has leather patriarchal seat. The crypt is full of frescos from life of Jesus and the life of saint Hermagoras and saint Fortunatus. You can admire early and fine early Christian mosaics. I liked the most the one with a turtle and the big one that represents sea with boats and sailers.
Gaber Z — Google review
The Basilica of Aquileia is a treasure that everyone should visit. The mosaic floor is absolutely stunning, and the space around the Basilica is pleasant and relaxing. The frescoed crypt is also fantastic! Absolutely recommended when passing through the FVG region!
Camilla Z — Google review
The Basilica is a beautiful piece of architecture. Majestic with a magnificent mosaic floor and ornate wooden roof. Also fantastic is the visit to the archaeological dig area below the Basilica where it is possible to see the early roman mosaic dating back to the first century a.d. The area surrounding the Basilica is also very interesting and kept in order.
Lachlan M — Google review
Fascinating early Christian basilica. Floor mosaics back to the 5th C.
Rick P — Google review
One of the most beautiful churches ever!
Moritz L — Google review
Italy is a country of historical beauties and this Cattedrale is undoubtedly one of them. As soon as one enters the building is immediately overwhelmed by history: the view of the soffit and of the floors, covered by mosaics, is truly breathtaking. When admiring this church you can “touch” the architectural, engineering and artistic ability of our ancestors: these treasures have withstood over a millennium (even more, when considering the original layers dating from B.C.). The building basement is a surprise of mosaics and there it’s really astonishing how, through small tiles, those artists were able to depict amazing subjects, such as animals, faces and various objects. Just a small suggestion: the descriptions of the mosaics made on the handrails, has it is done, is not a very clever solutions, since most of the writings have gone.

Visitors can admire the well-preserved pillars of the forum and stone floors through a chain-link fence.
A very interesting place to visit. A lot of history in this city.

You can listen to the online audio guide here. This site, dating back to the 2nd century BC, was once a central hub of political and social life in ancient Aquileia. The well-preserved ruins, including columns and pavement, provide a vivid picture of Roman urban planning and architecture. Informative plaques help bring the history to life, making it a must-visit for anyone interested in Roman history and archaeology.

The Museo Nazionale Paleocristiano, also known as the National Archaeological Museum, is a must-visit in Aquileia. Housed in the old Monastero building, it showcases a remarkable collection of Early Christian inscriptions and mosaics found in the area. The museum offers a rare opportunity to see ancient stonework and mosaic floors, including those from an ancient church. Visitors can book a visit a few days beforehand to explore this unique collection.
Certainly a highlight in Aquileia. It is only rarely open, but you can book a visit a few days beforehand. The museum, housed in the old Monastero building, a former nunnery, showcases a number of Early Christian inscriptions from Aquileia and a great collection of mosaics - plus, of course, the mosaics of the ancient church! Stunning.

There's not a lot to see, but it's still interesting to see the ancient stonework and mosaic floors. It's also free so there's no reason not to visit.

The National Archaeological Museum of Aquileia is a must-visit for anyone interested in Roman civilization. Located at the Cassis Faraone Villa, it boasts an extensive collection of ancient Roman artifacts including statues, jewelry, coins, and household furnishings. The museum's expert presentation offers a unique glimpse into classical life through archaeological finds and writings.
Really enjoyed my visit. This museum, established in the 19th century, houses an impressive collection of artifacts from the ancient Roman city of Aquileia. The exhibits include beautifully preserved mosaics, sculptures, and everyday objects that offer a deep insight into Roman life and culture. The museum's layout and informative displays make the history of Aquileia come alive. Staff was nice and let me put my stuff in storage.

A true hidden gem of a museum—what a delightful discovery! I didn’t anticipate much given its small-town setting, but it far exceeded my expectations. For anyone who appreciates history and art, this is an absolute must-visit: bright, thoughtfully curated, and filled with remarkable artifacts. Just across the road, the Basilica is equally impressive, along with the First World War cemetery honoring Italian servicemen

Aquileia was after Rome the main city of the Roman empire, so there is much to see and in very good condition! You can by a 48 hour combiticket for both basilica and all the museums, bij the tourist information!! Not by the basilica! that's all on walking distance from the cheerful camping site! It is wonderful
Rogier V — Google review
An underrated and often overlooked site, we were surprised to find hardly any other tourists during our visit. At first, we thought there wouldn’t be much to see and that we’d walk through quickly, but we ended up spending 2–3 hours exploring. The place is full of fascinating monuments and artefacts, offering plenty to discover. Highly recommended for anyone interested in diving deeper into the treasures of the Roman era. There are also many English information boards, which makes it enjoyable and accessible for international visitors.
Hajnalka B — Google review
Great presentation of the life, customs, and luxury of the ancient city of Aquileia. One can learn a good bit about the city through an interesting chronology. The exhibition leads you to discover the Austrian origins of the museum (1882) and its first acquisition as part of the Italian state (1915), and is then divided into sections: public sculpture, domestic luxury (wonderful mosaics and ancient glass!), trade and crafts, coins and jewels. The collection of tomb inscriptions, housed in the garden and being re-ordered now, is impressive. Great conclusion for a day trip in Aquileia!
GLoi — Google review
Relatively compact, but still reasonably stacked museum that is poised to give one a multilayer insight into life in Roman times, particularly 2nd century BCE to 3rd, CE. Higher society art, as well as more daily objects are well-presented, and trade links covered through respective items. 2-3 hours at leisurely pace should cover everything - don't forget the 'accessible storage' area in the back, where more nuanced and less 'thematic' course may be traced.
Dan M — Google review
interesting, it is worth visiting. it also looks like they are making it bigger, stay tuned if you would like to see how it looks after remodeling
Melisa A — Google review
Great museum that was open later than we expected (7pm). We visited on a Saturday (25 March 2023) around 430pm. We spent about 1.5 hrs but could have spent 2-3h reading more signs. 3 floors inside + outdoor area -- unfortunately the outdoor area is under renovation so you can't tour the whole thing but you can still enjoy some of it. Signs in Italian and English that gave great insight. A small gift shop of mostly books but a few other treasures. Loved learning about the city and seeing so many Roman artifacts. It'll never get old seeing back into history & daily lives like this!

The Archaeological area of Aquileia - Roman necropolis is a complex that includes the Baptistery, Sudhalle, markets, Forum, Sepolchretum (cemetery), remains of domus and the Fluvial Port. The burial ground is well restored and accessible via a marked road. However, it's not currently wheelchair accessible due to a staircase at the entrance. The area is disconnected but easily accessible and definitely worth visiting at least once in your life.

I visited the vinery during a stay in Grado and it was definitely one of the highlights. The owner's son gave me and my friend a very interesting tour of the whole place and provided us with great insights into the production and business during a tasting. The wines are great, and the hospitality just so. I highly recommend a visit, and to call in advance and book a tour in case you are in a hurry. Will come again!

I had an unforgetable time at Ca'Tullio today! The grandson of the founder gave me an increbile tour trough the wineyard and explained me everthing from the history of the place to the current wine making process. You can feel the love and passion he has for the history and handcraft related to this place. Following this, I had the pleasure to taste some wines, including high quality ham, salami and cheese and it was as good as the tour, served by his marvelous colleague. She was so very accomodating and friendly! I would have loved to spend more time at this awsome place and would be happy to bought more wine but my time was to short and my trunk to small. I am looking forward to visit you again. Thank you soo much!!!

After an exhausting three-day trip to Trieste, we stopped at Aquileia and stumbled upon Pizza e Sapori Soles. The proprietor of this pizzeria is incredibly amiable and amusing, offering us a warm welcome despite being alone and accommodating over ten people. The menu boasts delectable, freshly prepared dishes that are served piping hot from the oven with a cheerful demeanor. The food is uncomplicated yet satisfyingly perfect for our needs.
Delicious pizza for a low price, right in front of the basilica (small terrace). The pizzaiolo is super friendly. One would expect here a tourist trap and it's instead the place to lunch at Aquilea!

I almost gave up on finding a decent pizza in this area while we were in vacation for a week now, but then one day before our departure I found this place. What can I say ?! The owner, clearly an “Italiano vero”, full of energy, simpatico, and knows how to make a real italian pizza, after all he was making pizzas his whole life. We also had some arancini which were also delicious. I would definitely go there again.

Restaurant
Ristorante La Capannina is highly regarded for its seafood dishes, receiving outstanding ratings. The only drawback mentioned is that not everyone knows how to consume a whole cooked fish or shrimp, as they may lack the skills to fillet or shell them. Nonetheless, the cuisine and service are excellent. Customers have consistently enjoyed delightful lunches at this restaurant with perfect service. The menu offers a variety of unique desserts alongside delicious food options.
Unexpectedly great, we've got a recommendation and didn't know anything about the place before. The food (we had fish and seafood) is much much better then in other places in the area, very kind, professional service, smiling, very good english, pleasant atmosphere, environment, decorations. The wine was typical italian, very good, soft, tasty. Delicious cakes in the end and obviously perfect ristretto. And the prices are really very friedly. Definitely recommend.

I've been coming here since child - now 28 years old visiting again with my girlfriend! Everything is just perfect! The loveliest personal and amazing food! 🥰
Gustav B — Google review
Large fish restaurant, divided over several spaces. Food is reasonable. Housewine from the tap. But the problem is the service. Two waitresses for this large place is surely not enough. The only thing they do is running around with plates. No time for advice, personal contact, coffee or anything. At the end of the meal I waited for ½ an hour, but the waiters were busy in the other area. I just left and went for coffee and grappa in a bar down the road. When I came back ½ hour later to pay the bill, they hadn't even missed me. Summary: acceptable place, but don't go there on a weekend night

Surely top rated for fish dishes. Short from 5 stars, in my opinion, only because not every one knows how to eat a fish or shrimp presented cooked whole. Many cannot filet a whole fish or know how to shell out a shrimp. Otherwise excellent cuisine and service.

Antica Aquileia ristorante pizzeria is a delightful dining destination that promises an exceptional culinary experience. Guests rave about the delicious pizzas, particularly the unique ten-grain pizza and the standout pistachio pizza, which has quickly become a local favorite. The menu also features fresh seafood options like tender calamari and mussels, alongside refreshing dishes such as caprese salad. The atmosphere is cozy and welcoming, with attentive service from friendly staff who go above and beyond to ensure a memorable visit.
The service was great, the waiter however new did a very good job. I ordered a bottle of wine and even the chef came out and was praising the ordered bottle of wine. Everything perfect. From the very first moment we felt welcomed in the restaurant, the owner was very kind and recommended us great dishes. We had fried calamari, mussels and caprese salad. Everything was fresh, soft and delicious. Two desserts (tiramisu and pistachio tiramisu) were a part of the great finish of the lunch we had. Highly recommended place!

I would not recommend this place to non Italian, the staff are rude and very stubborn, they don't like foreigners like me, there was in particular a female waitress, which could be even part of the business owners circle. I went there to sit down and have dinner, in the end I just left with a pizza to take away, but I so unless you are German, Austrian, American white, Italian don't even think of getting a table, they will put you aside and wait for a table despite there empty tables. The worse in all this situation when I went and asked why are we waiting that long to get a table at 9 pm a week day with half of the restaurant empty, the lady on the picture said that they are reserved, for one hour we could have ordered ate and on our way. Shame on you Again you dare and comment, I don't want to try your food because of the luck of hospitality of your staff, after all I am not a beggar, I can afford your food, but in a restaurant the staff can make the food taste better by not being racis*t, I still think you should train your staff to be nice and put aside the arrogance, lastly as you mentioned there plenty other beautiful restaurant in Aquileia and I thank god for that

For me, the pizza pistacchio here is the new benchmark in interpretation and taste, and has replaced my previous number one in Trieste (Di Napoli). Perfect! The atmosphere is cozy, but due to its size, it can get a bit noisy at times. Highly recommended, reservations necessary, as it's very popular with locals.

we stumbled into Antica Aquileia with dreams of devouring divine Italian pizza. Instead, what we got was the equivalent of a wet cardboard box. The pizzas tasted like someone had photocopied a picture of a pizza and then sprinkled sadness on top. Cutting the pizza was like cutting a wet condom. The dough had less soul than a calculator. But the true masterpiece of disappointment was the bill. Prices on the menu seemed like an innocent lie—until the final check came with a random, majestic +20 euros slapped on as if Zeus himself demanded a tribute. If I ever crave the sensation of being tricked while chewing on boredom incarnate, maybe I’ll return. But honestly, I’d rather gnaw on an old shoebox dipped in tomato paste than give Antica Aquileia another cent.

My thanks go to the waitresses Elisa, Isabella and Anna, the barman Raffaele, the pizza cook, to Sabina, who volunteered to drive me to the bus stop in her private car, and to the manager Pierluigi Mattiussi and his fiancée as well as to Mr. Mattiussi , sr. Grazie mille!

Outstanding restaurant with great food and service! Went there on a date with my significant other after visiting the Archaeological Museum and had a pizza with red beer. Waiter and waitresses were phenomenal as well!

The hotel room is clean, the matrass is terrible and does not guarantee a good night's rest, fortunately my partner and I had booked only for two nights so the damage on our backs was minor. The room was cold with no heating. The shower piece had a minor defect, it did not remain fit on the sliding bar. Hot water OK. The pizza was good, the only food we can recommend here. As well as the coffee served. We found the restaurant just terrible! Most plates on the menu are countersigned by asterisks to indicate "frozen ingredients". Even the mixed salad came out of prepacked bag and was old and "wrinkled". Pasta aglio-olio was excessively salted. Poor ratio quality/price.

Too expensive (with 2Euro couvert per person) for rather low quality and/or quantity of the meals (Cjarsons, calamari) and for fast-food level servis.

Day 2

Center of town
For day 2, we recommend exploring the center side of town. Start the day off with Cocambo, then wind down and take it easy by the time you get to Archaeological Area of Aquileia - Domus of Tito Macro (Cossar Fund). All together, your day would be filled with about 7 hours of non-stop fun.

Nestled in the charming town of Aquileia, just a stone's throw from its renowned archaeological sites, Cocambo is a delightful chocolate factory that promises an unforgettable experience. During my visit, I was guided by the knowledgeable Elisabetta on an engaging journey through the fascinating world of cocoa and coffee processing. The tour was not only informative but also tantalizing for the senses, as we savored various delectable products along the way.
We were on a factory tour, it was friendly and informative. Taste the cacao liqueur!

The Great Mausoleum of Heraklion is a reconstructed funerary monument located near the Tourist office. It stands at 17 meters high and was restored in 1956 by G. Brusin and V. Degrassi, funded by the Candia family. The restoration was based on fragments found in Roncolon di Fiumicello in 1891, sparking much discussion about its accuracy to the original structure.
(Translated by Google) Mausoleum of Candia Aquileia, Italy AD 1st century The mausoleum, reconstructed in 1956 within the ancient city, was discovered piece by piece in the Roncolon area along the Roman road leading to Tergeste (Trieste). It includes a circular temple-like structure with a high base decorated with reliefs, guarded by two lions, which houses the statue of the dead man dressed in a toga. Although the mausoleum is heavily patched with modern materials, it is an example of a large Augustan funerary monument that would have belonged to a prominent figure in the city. (Original) Candia mauzóleuma Aquileia, Olaszország i.sz. 1. század Az 1956-ban az ókori városon belül rekonstruált mauzóleumot darabonként a Roncolon körzetben fedezték fel a Tergeste-be (Trieszt) vezető római út mentén. Két oroszlánnal védett, domborművel díszített magas alappal rendelkező, kör alakú, templomszerű építményt foglal magában, amely a tógába öltözött halott szobrát őrzi. Bár a mauzóleum modern anyagokkal erősen foltozott, a nagy augusztusi temetkezési emlékmű példája, amely a város egyik kiemelkedő alakjához tartozott volna.

(Translated by Google) On the corner between via Giulia Augusta and via XXIV Maggio stands the imposing Great Mausoleum (17 meters high). The restoration of the funerary monument, carried out by G. Brusin and V. Degrassi in 1956 on the basis of fragments found in 1891 in Roncolon di Fiumicello (a few kilometers from Aquileia, a town located on the ancient Via Gemina), is much discussed. The cube containing the family's funerary cell - placed on steps - is surmounted by an aedicule with a spire decorated with scales. On it, the pine cone, a funerary symbol deriving from the mystery cults of Dionysus and Cybele, in which it meant fertility. In the elegant newsstand, a headless statue depicting the man who commissioned the tomb. Ancient Ruins
The Area Archeologica di Aquileia - Decumano Aratria Galla is a hidden gem that offers a glimpse into the grandeur of ancient Roman infrastructure. Although typically closed to the public, special occasions allow visitors to explore this remarkable site. The decumanus, unearthed in the 1970s, stretches about one hundred meters and served as a vital link between the river port and key civic areas like the forum and theater.
(Translated by Google) In January 2025 the site is freely accessible according to the times indicated on the Aquileia foundation website, which in winter are 10am-4pm. The short practicable stretch gives an idea of how a decumanus of an important Roman city was structured, since the paving, or paving, is the original one. The signs present give good explanations. A little further on, still on Via Giulia Augusta, there is the western part of the great Forum, which can still be freely observed from the road. I cartelli presenti danno buone spiegazioni.

I visited Decumano Aratria Galla in Ravenna and found it rich in history. This ancient Roman street, dating back to the 2nd century, was once a bustling thoroughfare in the city. It offers a fascinating glimpse into the urban layout and daily life of the past. The preserved ruins and informative displays provide great insight into Aquilea’s Roman heritage. You can listen to the online audio guide while being here. Roman roads really are impressive

It connected the river port with the forum and theater area in an east-west direction: the civil basilica overlooked it, the remains of which are visible in the archaeological area recently acquired by the Aquileia Foundation. The paving, still intact, was made of trachyte, a volcanic rock coming from the Euganean hills. According to two twin inscriptions, referred to this road by some scholars, the paving was an act of munificence by a woman, Aratria Galla, hence the name conventionally assigned to the decumanus.

Edit: Way back in 2019 when I took this trip, I couldn't make it all the way to the city of Rome so while visiting Venice, I found this smaller city with ancient roman ruins. Looking back on pictures I see I have taken quite a few while there. The floor mosaics are visible and the shape of the domus can be distinguished in the typical ancient roman style houses. The remains of a river port are visible and many more structures where being uncovered. At the time they were protected with sheets of what looked like plastic wraps but I could see them across the street from many of the existing exposed structures.

The archaeological site of Aquileia is an incredibly fascinating and well-preserved piece of history that provides a window into the rich and diverse past of Italy. Located in the northeast of the country, the site features the remains of an ancient Roman city that was once a major commercial hub and center of culture. One of the most impressive features of the area is the beautifully preserved mosaic floors, which depict a wide range of scenes and provide a unique insight into the daily life of the ancient inhabitants of Aquileia. Visitors can also explore the ruins of the Roman forum, the ancient basilica, and the well-preserved remains of a Roman residential neighborhood. In addition to the Roman-era structures, the site also includes remnants of other civilizations that have occupied the area throughout history. For example, there are remnants of a Lombard necropolis from the early Middle Ages, as well as early Christian basilicas that date back to the 4th century AD. Overall, the area archeologica di Aquileia is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in history, architecture, or archaeology. The site is incredibly well-maintained and offers a wealth of information about the rich cultural heritage of Italy. Whether you are a seasoned history buff or just curious about the past, a trip to Aquileia is sure to be an unforgettable experience

(Translated by Google) This house is particularly famous for its black mosaics. The air conditioning left us rather cold in March, but undoubtedly does its job in the summer months. The visit is a bit complicated: Sometimes you walk over concrete, sometimes over old mosaics. In any case, you always have a guilty conscience that you step where you aren't actually allowed to. The staff obviously understands this and is very friendly, helpful and in a good mood!

(Translated by Google) I highly recommend visiting this magnificent Domus of 1500 square meters, one of the largest in Northern Italy, created in the 1st century AD from the union of several pre-existing houses, evidence of the importance of Aquileia in Roman times. In it you can distinguish the various living, representative and commercial environments including a bakery. Some rooms preserve floor mosaics. Alcuni ambienti conservano mosaici pavimentali.

It was an amazing restaurant. The staff was extremely friendly and the food was delicious. I had my young daughter with me and they went out of their way to make her feel special. I recommend if you like delicious food. The price of the meal was average for the area and the taste was amazing.

Went for dinner with our family of 3. Service was good and staff/ owner spoke little English but could explain well. The food was very nice. We loved the fish, pasta and desserts!

Every year, always a 10/10! I enjoy the location, the service and the food... ALWAYS! Even with 32°C outside, I couldn’t resist the boretto with polenta.. one of my favorite dishes here. I recommend the hot and cold appetizer and quite all the dishes that they have, cause the fish is always fresh and cooked in the best way. If you have a romantic date or an occasion, here is the right place! It’s also near Aquileia and 15min from the seaside.
