Highlight of the small town. This magnificent basilica, originally founded in the 4th century, is a masterpiece of early Christian architecture. The highlight is the stunning mosaic floor, one of the largest and most intricate in the world, depicting biblical scenes and early Christian symbols. The basilica’s long history, including its role as a major religious center in the Roman Empire, adds to its significance.you should definitely download the audio guide then you can really appreciate the the stories of the mosaics.
A cradle of our faith for my country. From here the misionary work went out to the east. Glorious holly place, with a lot of history, beautiful mosaics and old architecture. Cript is amazing with lot of relics.
One of the most important church seats in this part of Italy, also for Slovenia, Austria and Croatia. Basilica is build on the 1. century Roman mosaics, that were covered in 4. century by other level of mosaics. On top of those two layers of mosaics the present church was built. The Bell tower dated from 11. century. The three naval church has leather patriarchal seat. The crypt is full of frescos from life of Jesus and the life of saint Hermagoras and saint Fortunatus. You can admire early and fine early Christian mosaics. I liked the most the one with a turtle and the big one that represents sea with boats and sailers.
The Basilica of Aquileia is a treasure that everyone should visit. The mosaic floor is absolutely stunning, and the space around the Basilica is pleasant and relaxing. The frescoed crypt is also fantastic! Absolutely recommended when passing through the FVG region!
The Basilica is a beautiful piece of architecture. Majestic with a magnificent mosaic floor and ornate wooden roof. Also fantastic is the visit to the archaeological dig area below the Basilica where it is possible to see the early roman mosaic dating back to the first century a.d. The area surrounding the Basilica is also very interesting and kept in order.
Fascinating early Christian basilica. Floor mosaics back to the 5th C.
One of the most beautiful churches ever!
Italy is a country of historical beauties and this Cattedrale is undoubtedly one of them. As soon as one enters the building is immediately overwhelmed by history: the view of the soffit and of the floors, covered by mosaics, is truly breathtaking. When admiring this church you can “touch” the architectural, engineering and artistic ability of our ancestors: these treasures have withstood over a millennium (even more, when considering the original layers dating from B.C.). The building basement is a surprise of mosaics and there it’s really astonishing how, through small tiles, those artists were able to depict amazing subjects, such as animals, faces and various objects. Just a small suggestion: the descriptions of the mosaics made on the handrails, has it is done, is not a very clever solutions, since most of the writings have gone.

Really enjoyed my visit. This museum, established in the 19th century, houses an impressive collection of artifacts from the ancient Roman city of Aquileia. The exhibits include beautifully preserved mosaics, sculptures, and everyday objects that offer a deep insight into Roman life and culture. The museum's layout and informative displays make the history of Aquileia come alive. Staff was nice and let me put my stuff in storage.
A true hidden gem of a museum—what a delightful discovery! I didn’t anticipate much given its small-town setting, but it far exceeded my expectations. For anyone who appreciates history and art, this is an absolute must-visit: bright, thoughtfully curated, and filled with remarkable artifacts. Just across the road, the Basilica is equally impressive, along with the First World War cemetery honoring Italian servicemen
Aquileia was after Rome the main city of the Roman empire, so there is much to see and in very good condition! You can by a 48 hour combiticket for both basilica and all the museums, bij the tourist information!! Not by the basilica! that's all on walking distance from the cheerful camping site! It is wonderful
An underrated and often overlooked site, we were surprised to find hardly any other tourists during our visit. At first, we thought there wouldn’t be much to see and that we’d walk through quickly, but we ended up spending 2–3 hours exploring. The place is full of fascinating monuments and artefacts, offering plenty to discover. Highly recommended for anyone interested in diving deeper into the treasures of the Roman era. There are also many English information boards, which makes it enjoyable and accessible for international visitors.
Great presentation of the life, customs, and luxury of the ancient city of Aquileia. One can learn a good bit about the city through an interesting chronology. The exhibition leads you to discover the Austrian origins of the museum (1882) and its first acquisition as part of the Italian state (1915), and is then divided into sections: public sculpture, domestic luxury (wonderful mosaics and ancient glass!), trade and crafts, coins and jewels. The collection of tomb inscriptions, housed in the garden and being re-ordered now, is impressive. Great conclusion for a day trip in Aquileia!
Relatively compact, but still reasonably stacked museum that is poised to give one a multilayer insight into life in Roman times, particularly 2nd century BCE to 3rd, CE. Higher society art, as well as more daily objects are well-presented, and trade links covered through respective items. 2-3 hours at leisurely pace should cover everything - don't forget the 'accessible storage' area in the back, where more nuanced and less 'thematic' course may be traced.
Great museum that was open later than we expected (7pm). We visited on a Saturday (25 March 2023) around 430pm. We spent about 1.5 hrs but could have spent 2-3h reading more signs. 3 floors inside + outdoor area -- unfortunately the outdoor area is under renovation so you can't tour the whole thing but you can still enjoy some of it. Signs in Italian and English that gave great insight. A small gift shop of mostly books but a few other treasures. Loved learning about the city and seeing so many Roman artifacts. It'll never get old seeing back into history & daily lives like this!
Amazing collection of anticquites including absolutely superb mosaics, sculptures and curved pictures-miniatures on gemmas. Exposition are located in three floors building and big yard and one hour is not enough to overlook all details.

A very interesting place to visit. A lot of history in this city.
You can listen to the online audio guide here. This site, dating back to the 2nd century BC, was once a central hub of political and social life in ancient Aquileia. The well-preserved ruins, including columns and pavement, provide a vivid picture of Roman urban planning and architecture. Informative plaques help bring the history to life, making it a must-visit for anyone interested in Roman history and archaeology.
A interesting place we can hope that the renovation works will be finished as soon as possible ❤️
Absolutely 💯 must see. Very interesting
Currently indergoong a restauration. Very impressive antient site
Historical treasure, worth visiting. I recommend some reading about it before.
Superb archeological area - relics from Roman and Byzantine eras, including beautiful mosaics. slightly off the beaten track but worth the trip with an fairly easy bus ride from the station Cervignano or from Grado
Under excavation? Not open to visitors, can be viewed from behind a fence (next to a busy road)...

Beautiful clock tower in the middle. You can walk around it but I was not allowed inside to climb to the top.
Nice bell tower. Cannot enter inside though
(Translated by Google) The tower was closed in March 2025 for various work, but it would be very interesting in several ways: 1) It offers a great view over Aquileia and 2) You can get to the excavations in the basement via the basilica (charged entry fee) and from below you can basically see the stone base on which the campanile was built. Unique! Einzigartig!

(Translated by Google) With its seventy-three meters high, the bell tower of the basilica of Aquileia stands out massively over the Friulian plain. Built by the patriarch Poppone probably in conjunction with the basilica or immediately after, in any case before his death in 1042, the bell tower had exploited the quarries of building material represented by the ancient buildings in ruins, in particular the amphitheatre. It originally consisted of a simple tower with a belfry and a low four-pitched roof. Over time, the reinforcement steps were added to the base (14th century) and, in the first half of the 16th century, under the patriarchs of the Venetian Grimani family, the bell tower was rebuilt. Finally, the octagonal lantern was built with the conical roof above, which still today completes the thousand-year-old structure of the bell tower. In 1962, the excavation carried out inside the bell tower brought to light an interesting stratigraphic sequence from the medieval and modern era, relating to the life phase of the tower. Furthermore, a further portion of the mosaic floor that decorated the north hall of the Theodorian cult complex (313-320 AD) was brought to light.

Very interesting
(Translated by Google) A special place. Peaceful and dignified. Historically very interesting, we are reminded here of the horrors and deaths of the Great War. Was it really so sweet for the young men to die for their fatherland? Wouldn't they have preferred to stay at home with their loved ones? The Arkosolium provides a clear view of the karst, the land to be reached. At that time Austria-Hungary, then after the hard-fought victory Italy for a few years, today Slovenia. Let us live in peace with each other and honor this beautiful country, in whose earth heroes, but bodies ravaged by war, rest. (Original) Ein besonderer Ort.
(Translated by Google) A journey through history that stirs your soul Aquileia is not just an archaeological site, but a true time machine. While the remains of Roman grandeur transport you back to a distant era, it is in the cemetery that the heart of the journey is revealed in all its power. Here, history becomes personal. The tomb of Maria Bergamas, the mother who chose the Unknown Soldier on behalf of all the mothers of Italy, tells a story of sacrifice and honor that transcends time. Her son, Antonio, lost among thousands of unidentified soldiers, became the symbol of an entire nation's grief. This sacrifice, also engraved in the words of D'Annunzio on the walls of the Basilica, forces us to reflect deeply. Leaving Aquileia means not only having seen a piece of history, but having received a powerful warning. The stories of these men and women force you to reflect on who we are, what truly matters, and what values we should remember and honor every day. I highly recommend seeing all of Aquileia, but stop and reflect in the cemetery. It's there that you'll understand that the past can still speak to us and teach us lessons for the future.

This important Roman and medieval monument overlooks the small cemetery where several Italian soldiers from the First World War are buried, alongside several pre-existing funerary monuments. Compared to the monumental rhetoric of nearby Redipuglia, the Heroes' Cemetery (as it is called) stands out for its sobriety and compact size; obviously, the number of fallen soldiers buried there is also far fewer. In the linear simplicity of the cemetery (all identical, aligned, simple crosses), small memorial stones and headstones commemorate specific fallen soldiers. Many of these headstones are decorated with Art Nouveau motifs, in keeping with the spirit of the era. The simplicity of the cemetery is broken only by a small central mausoleum, which contains ten "unknown soldiers," all except the one chosen by Mrs. Bergamas, who now rests in Rome at the Altare della Patria. A visit to the Heroes' Cemetery takes just a few minutes. A few minutes during which it is advisable to pause and reflect on all the lives that were lost in this part of Italy between 1915 and 1918, and which as such should be respectfully honored and remembered.

Certainly a highlight in Aquileia. It is only rarely open, but you can book a visit a few days beforehand. The museum, housed in the old Monastero building, a former nunnery, showcases a number of Early Christian inscriptions from Aquileia and a great collection of mosaics - plus, of course, the mosaics of the ancient church! Stunning.
There's not a lot to see, but it's still interesting to see the ancient stonework and mosaic floors. It's also free so there's no reason not to visit.

(Translated by Google) Mausoleum of Candia Aquileia, Italy AD 1st century The mausoleum, reconstructed in 1956 within the ancient city, was discovered piece by piece in the Roncolon area along the Roman road leading to Tergeste (Trieste). It includes a circular temple-like structure with a high base decorated with reliefs, guarded by two lions, which houses the statue of the dead man dressed in a toga. Although the mausoleum is heavily patched with modern materials, it is an example of a large Augustan funerary monument that would have belonged to a prominent figure in the city. (Original) Candia mauzóleuma Aquileia, Olaszország i.sz. 1. század Az 1956-ban az ókori városon belül rekonstruált mauzóleumot darabonként a Roncolon körzetben fedezték fel a Tergeste-be (Trieszt) vezető római út mentén. Két oroszlánnal védett, domborművel díszített magas alappal rendelkező, kör alakú, templomszerű építményt foglal magában, amely a tógába öltözött halott szobrát őrzi. Bár a mauzóleum modern anyagokkal erősen foltozott, a nagy augusztusi temetkezési emlékmű példája, amely a város egyik kiemelkedő alakjához tartozott volna.
Just on the road side. I visited the Great Mausoleum of Heraklion (Il Grande Mausoleo di Candia) and found it fascinating. This historic site, though less well-known, offers a quiet and uncrowded experience.
(Translated by Google) On the corner between via Giulia Augusta and via XXIV Maggio stands the imposing Great Mausoleum (17 meters high). The restoration of the funerary monument, carried out by G. Brusin and V. Degrassi in 1956 on the basis of fragments found in 1891 in Roncolon di Fiumicello (a few kilometers from Aquileia, a town located on the ancient Via Gemina), is much discussed. The cube containing the family's funerary cell - placed on steps - is surmounted by an aedicule with a spire decorated with scales. On it, the pine cone, a funerary symbol deriving from the mystery cults of Dionysus and Cybele, in which it meant fertility. In the elegant newsstand, a headless statue depicting the man who commissioned the tomb.

Very helpful tourist centre. Bought the 48 hour card. Explained very well the attractions and the boat trip. Unfortunately i didn’t have time for the boat
Great place to start exploring Aquileia. We bought the walking audio tour (bring headphones to listen as you walk around) which included entry to all the ticketed attractions including the historical museum and a return trip on the ferry to Grado (ferry is a 1hr trip one way so relax). This only cost us 18€ each. You can start and stop at any time and to be used within 48hrs so you have plenty of time.
Lovely boat ride from grado to aquileia! Perfect if you go with the the bikes to make a ride in Alquileia. Good explanations of the Captain in German and Italian.
Very informative, polite and helpful staff, AS IN ALL FVG Tourism points around Friuli. Speak moderate to very good English, can help you with local transportation. Free map of Aquileia, tons of information if you want too.
The staff at Aquileia onfopoint were very helpful. With beautiful English they alerted me to how bicycles and local boats and trains interact in this region. Very valuable information, as I was then able to cycle according to the boat timetable, making my travels much more enjoyable. Great people with solid information.
These ladies are realy very friendly and hepful. Thank you.
Very friendly and informative. One of the best tourist information offices I have been to. Grazie mille!

More beautiful Mosiac
Wonderful floor mosaics, especially the drapery mosaic with the light and shadow effect.
(Translated by Google) It seems incredible to think that this place was, until the 1950s, used as a stable. The palace is a bit hidden, but it is worth looking for it (it is a few meters from the tourist office where you have to buy the ticket) and visiting it. What struck me most is an incredible mosaic where the colors fade, and the different levels of the excavations, where different centuries emerge, one more beautiful and particular than the other. The upper floor is used as an exhibition, and it is worth stopping by. There are also numerous free brochures on the history of Aquileia and the excavations (Original) Sembra incredibile pensare che questo luogo era, fino agli anno '50 dello scorso secolo, adibito a stalla.

Really nice place, with a lot types of wine. When we entered we have time to look around and after that a english speaking lady take care of us. It was a great idea to visit this place. Wines are good for a good price.
I visited the vinery during a stay in Grado and it was definitely one of the highlights. The owner's son gave me and my friend a very interesting tour of the whole place and provided us with great insights into the production and business during a tasting. The wines are great, and the hospitality just so. I highly recommend a visit, and to call in advance and book a tour in case you are in a hurry. Will come again!
I had an unforgetable time at Ca'Tullio today! The grandson of the founder gave me an increbile tour trough the wineyard and explained me everthing from the history of the place to the current wine making process. You can feel the love and passion he has for the history and handcraft related to this place. Following this, I had the pleasure to taste some wines, including high quality ham, salami and cheese and it was as good as the tour, served by his marvelous colleague. She was so very accomodating and friendly! I would have loved to spend more time at this awsome place and would be happy to bought more wine but my time was to short and my trunk to small. I am looking forward to visit you again. Thank you soo much!!!
Fantastic. We went for a tour of the winehouse and a taste itinerary for both wines and local products. The girl following us was very kind and explained us a lot of the story of the place and the wines. A must try
beauiful place, great service, good wines
Ecceptional sales area in an attractive building.Fine wine with excellent service .Well worth a visit

I recommend it🍷🥂 (Original) Kolejny raz w drodze powrotnej do Polski zatrzymaliśmy się w Cantina Ca'Tullio. Wspaniałe miejsce, wspaniała obsługa.
