Nestled in the Yaroslavl Region, about 100 km from its namesake city, Uglich is a charming destination that boasts the impressive Uglich Kremlin. This historical site features notable structures such as the Duke's chamber and the stunning Church of Dmitry on Blood, built in 1692. Visitors can also explore the Transfiguration of the Savior Cathedral and several monasteries like Alexeevsky and Voskresensky, which date back to 1680.
Beautiful location. Carefully selected and nicely arranged exposition.

According to legend, Uglich was founded in 937 by Yan Pleskovich, an envoy of Princess Olga, to collect tribute. The first recorded mention of the city is in the Ipatiev Chronicle in 1148, where it is referred to as "Ugliche Pole." The city was an important trading center due to its location on the Volga waterway. In the 13th to 15th centuries, Uglich became the center of a separate principality. Under Prince Andrey Bolshoy (1462-1491), the city experienced a period of prosperity, with the construction of stone churches, the minting of coins, and the development of crafts. In 1491, Andrey was arrested on the orders of Ivan III, and Uglich lost its independence. The Uglich Kremlin is a historical and architectural complex in the center of the city of Uglich, located on the high bank of the Volga River. It is one of the most significant places in the city, associated with key events in Russian history, particularly the death of Tsarevich Dmitry in 1591, which was one of the causes of the Time of Troubles. The Kremlin ensemble includes several important structures, including the Transfiguration Cathedral with its bell tower, the Church of St. Demetrius on the Blood, the Prince's Chambers, and the City Council Building. The Transfiguration Cathedral, built in the 18th century in the Baroque style, stands out for its frescoes and majestic iconostasis. The Church of Demetrius, built on the site of the Tsarevich's death, is adorned with vivid frescoes depicting the tragic events. The 15th-century Prince's Chambers are a rare example of ancient Russian civil architecture that has survived to this day. The Uglich Kremlin is surrounded by a picturesque park, offering a beautiful view of the Volga River. There is also a tea shop on the territory of the Kremlin, where you can buy not only tea, but also various jams, tinctures, including alcoholic ones, cedar coffee, gingerbread, and many other products that you can see in my photos.

Nestled in the historic city of Uglich, the Church of the Transfiguration of the Lord and Praise of the Blessed Virgin Mary stands as a testament to Russia's rich heritage. Constructed in 1713 under Peter the Great’s directive, this magnificent cathedral replaced an earlier wooden church dating back to the 10th century.
Enjoyed the classical cathedral carol. Local street market for shopping and a calm place to relax.

(Translated by Google) This is Russia, the ancient city of Uglich (it was here that Tsarevich Dmitry, heir to the Russian crown, was killed). By the way, it is included in the famous tourist route “Golden Ring of Russia”. We must pay tribute to the local administration - every year the cathedral gets better and more beautiful! There is also a small but very informative exhibition. Well done!

(Translated by Google) The monumental Transfiguration Cathedral was built in 1706 at the direction of Peter I on the site of a wooden church of the 10th century, with a grandiose carved iconostasis and ancient miraculous icons of the Savior and the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary. On the site of the wooden church stood a 15th-century cathedral, fragments of which were discovered by archaeologists near the northern wall and in the interior of the temple. The interior of the cathedral is a square hall with a side of 14 m, covered without pillars with a light closed vault 17 m high. The cathedral was painted in 1809-1818 by the artel of the famous master academician Timofey Medvedev in the Upper Volga region. There are a total of 59 compositions on the walls, 32 of which are large, based on scenes from the New Testament, gospel parables telling about miracles and the earthly life of Christ. The composition "Transfiguration" is a copy of the Vatican work by Raphael. The grandiose six-tiered iconostasis was installed in 1853. The icons of the upper tiers were made in the 18th century by the Moscow icon painter Fyodor Rozhnov. The cathedral standing on the banks of the Volga looks very powerful, an iconic building of the Uglich Kremlin.

(Translated by Google) The main building of the Uglich Kremlin - the Transfiguration Cathedral - is distinguished by its clearly monumental forms. It was erected by talented serf craftsmen led by Grigory Fedorov in 1706 on the site of a dilapidated 15th-century cathedral. The general composition dates back to the Yaroslavl churches of the 17th century, but individual elements were brought in from the “Naryshkin Baroque”. The grandiose and solemn structure is a multi-tiered carved iconostasis (1860). He closely follows the forms of the “Naryshkin baroque”, but does not achieve their plasticity. Columns descending in tiers, braided with climbing vines, loose cornices, and friezes rich in ornamentation make up the rich frames of the icons. The strongest decorative effect is produced by the inclusion of the composition in the “painted” architecture. The viewer can see Renaissance colonnades stretching into the distance and a protruding portico with a torn pediment, in the gap of which the figure of Christ, illuminated by light, hovers. The illusory breakthrough into depth and height, repeated in the painting of the vault, leads the eye beyond the interior.

The Chambers of the Uglich Princes are a historical building located in Uglich, part of the architectural ensemble of the Uglich Kremlin. They were built in the 15th century and served as a residence for the local princes. The building is an example of ancient Russian stone architecture, combining features of a defensive structure and a princely palace. The chambers have been rebuilt several times, but they still retain their original elements, such as thick walls, narrow windows, and vaulted ceilings. Inside, visitors can see fragments of paintings and ancient decorations. Today, the chambers are part of the Uglich State Historical, Architectural, and Art Museum, which displays household items, icons, and other artifacts related to the history of the Uglich Principality.

(Translated by Google) The chamber of the palace of appanage princes is part of the princely palace built by Prince Andrey the Great in the 1480s. Initially, the complex consisted of residential buildings connected by passages, a cathedral and a house church, located along the banks of the Volga and adjacent to the Kremlin wall. The foundations and foundations of the walls of the cathedral and other buildings were uncovered by archaeologists in 1985-1989. After the restoration in 1892, a “neo-Russian” porch and decorative grilles on the roof appeared. On June 15, 1892, the Uglich Museum of Russian Antiquities opened here. The monument is the oldest residential building in central Russia. Over five centuries, the cultural layer around it rose by a meter, turning the first floor into a basement. The third floor of the monument is a large room. Its size, the image of the Savior Not Made by Hands and the icon niche opposite the doors on the southern wall suggest that this was not a living space, but a princely front hall of the palace for receiving guests with close people. Under the image of the Savior was the place of the prince. There is an exhibition of tiles in the basement. In the windows we saw a stunning, huge, one-pound Gospel of the Moscow Print, with a massive silver frame made of charcoal silver.

One captivating destination to explore while on a Volga river cruise is the Tserkov' Tsarevicha Dimitriya Na Krovi museum. This serene location showcases exquisite artwork and provides a tranquil atmosphere for visitors. It represents an era of adversity, referring to troubled times in history. With its historical significance and magnificent artistry, this museum offers a unique glimpse into the past without emphasizing personal encounters or experiences.
The Church of Demetrius, built on the site of the Tsarevich's death, is adorned with vivid frescoes depicting the tragic events. In 1591, Tsarevich Dmitry, the last of the Rurikids, was killed here. The official version is an accident caused by his congenital epilepsy, but the people blamed Boris Godunov, which marked the beginning of the Time of Troubles. The Church of Demetrius (1692), one of the most picturesque churches in Russia, was built on the site of his death. In general, it is a mystical place, shrouded in mystery and attraction. Many researchers are trying to understand what happened at that time and why Godunov was accused of the Tsarevich's death. It was probably a conspiracy. The interior is abundantly decorated with frescoes, paintings, icons, and pictures. There is almost no empty space, and from the entrance to the ceiling, there are images everywhere. This creates a sense of emotional overload.

(Translated by Google) The Church of Tsarevich Dimitri on the Blood was erected on the very spot where on May 15, 1591, the life of Tsarevich Dimitri, the son of Ivan the Terrible, the last Uglich prince, was cut short. The existing temple was built by order of Peter I Alekseevich; it was preceded by a wooden chapel, a cage church of the early 17th century, and a log tent church from 1630. There was a tomb in the temple, under which the very place where Demetrius’ blood was shed was preserved. The stone church belongs to the type of pillarless five-domed churches on a basement, widespread in the second half of the 17th century. The semicircle of the altar apse is located at the site of the death of the prince. The vestibule of the church was painted in the 18th century with commandment scenes. The mural was made in 1788 by master P. Khlebnikov from Borisoglebskaya Sloboda near Rostov on scenes from biblical tales. The western wall of the high part of the temple is occupied by the composition “The Murder of Tsarevich Demetrius”. This is the ideological center of the interior and a rare example of historical painting in a church. The painting was done in 1772 by the artel of the Moscow contractor Sapozhnikov. The development of the plot is read from left to right and includes several events of the fateful day of May 15, 1591, succeeding each other in accordance with the hagiographic narrative. Above is the scene of dressing in the mansion and seeing off the prince for a walk; below, near the stairs, is the episode of the murder. Above and to the right are Tsarina Marina Nagaya crying over the prince, nurse Arina Tuchkova and the Uglich residents who ran to the Kremlin at the ringing of the bell. In the center is a bell tower, sexton Fyodor beating the bell and murderers trying to break open the doors and stop the ringing. On the right is a dynamic scene of the townspeople reprisal of the murderers, above are the bodies of those beaten in the ditch and the messengers galloping to Moscow. The composition is crowned with a panorama of the Moscow Kremlin and a large image of the prince in the face of a saint. The gilded carved iconostasis in the temple was installed in 1867.

Museum
Specialty Museums
(Translated by Google) The museum was opened in 1999 on Uspenskaya Square in the basements of shopping arcades. The Uglich Museum has 3 small halls filled with thematic exhibits, bottles, mainly vodka, of different years and different sizes. For lovers of this drink, there is a pleasing picture of recognizable bottles, especially from the past. Among the huge collection of these pieces, many regions of our vast Motherland are represented: Vladimir, Yaroslavl, Novgorod, Nizhny Novgorod, Shuya, Samara, Bryansk, Tatarstan, St. Petersburg, Tula, MSK. There are some old containers, a moonshine still, and various documents on the burning topic of drinking vodka, liqueurs and wine. But the emphasis of the exhibition is still on the bottles themselves. The famous entrepreneur P.A. was born near Uglich. Smirnov and the city became the place where the family business of this family began. The exhibition tells about the history of production and traditions of consumption of this drink in the current state of its production, but the story will not tell you about the facts, which are very abundant. Remembered an important thing!!! Alcohol is strictly poured into water, and not vice versa. We captured the formula of 40C strength vodka, look for it in the photo! The photo is paid separately from the ticket price. The tour also includes a tasting of one drink + a snack of bread and cucumbers. Children are not allowed to drink, but they also have a ticket at a different price, everything is according to the law. In general, it is better to plan your visit for the evening, as we did, so that the pleasant aftertaste can be consolidated, so to speak, with additional samples. Formally, the address of the museum is listed on Rostovskaya Street, but in fact the entrance is from Yaroslavskaya.

(Translated by Google) The museum is not large, located next to a liquor store. We were lucky - the excursion was conducted by a man who told an interesting story, although at first the excursion was going to be conducted by a girl who probably knew nothing about alcohol or life. I’m giving two stars only because of her - when I was about to take a photo of the inscription, she flew up and said that there was a fee for photographing there - 100 rubles. A very strange approach, because the main goal of this excursion to the store is to create a desire to purchase local products. Thanks to this, the anti-manager limited his purchase to two bottles of slivyanka, although he could have purchased more - the mood was ruined. By the way, there is practically nothing to photograph there - only three small rooms in the basement, where in glass display cases there is a collection of bottles of alcohol from various manufacturers, and moonshine stills are primitive from material evidence. The male tour guide gets five stars for his story.

Guests have raved about the unique tasting sets featuring liqueurs and quails, although some noted a desire for more berry flavors in the drinks. (Translated by Google) Definitely worth a visit. I liked the menu's use of local produce—fish and cheeses—as much as possible. So I tried the catfish pancakes, Volga solyanka, and nastoika. I have to say, it's divine 👍👍 The only downside to Uglich is the nastoikas—they're thermonuclear. At Gosti, everything is 35 degrees Celsius. You don't enjoy the taste, you feel the scalding alcohol. Another plus for the service and care for tourists: the restroom has a fun set: deodorant, sanitary pads, a shoe polish, and a clothes-cleaning strip. Next to the restaurant is a souvenir shop selling products from the Yaroslavl region. Expensive and absolutely tasteless, this is the least that can disappoint, but the lack of cleanliness in the children's room and toilet room indicates that they do not care about the guests and do not observe sanitary standards at all. The children's room looks like a collection of old broken toys brought from home, the floors are dirty, a strong and sharp smell of chlorine from a rag lying in the corner, the town with a slide is very dirty, in the toilet you just rub, there are no toilet cleaning cards, the administrator does not take measures, is rude, referring to the fact that there is a lot of work and the toilets are being washed, and the card is allegedly in the director's office. Literally: "Do you want to write a complaint?! Write!" turned around and left! We had lunch on Monday at about 4 pm, there are not many visitors. The food is cold, the portion of borscht was like it was eaten before being served, the ptitim with cream is absolutely disgusting, the waiter said it was just with slicks, but it is impossible to eat, pasta porridge. There are a lot of pieces of tomatoes with skin in the borscht 😤 well, this is elementary and I know all the cooks, you need to remove the skin, but not when you are GUESTING!! And even the bread is tasteless, just dry bread, not toasted, but dried out!! Disappointed! The restaurant 100 meters away was clean! (Translated by Google) Tasty. But not quickly. While you are waiting for your food, you can busy yourself reading a volume of Lenin. If you do not specify the order in which the dishes will be served, they will give you everything at once. Or even hot dishes before soup, salads and appetizers after main courses. Soups: borscht and solyanka are just a delight, chicken broth is a little fatty. The warm chicken salad is good, served with a poached egg, however, the egg seems to go into 4 salads, and there is very little of it in the salad. Fried cheese traditionally comes with cranberry syrup, but apparently they skimp on it and spread it on the plate. I didn't have enough for all 3 pieces of cheese. There is a children's corner in the room, children will be busy playing in the kitchen or drawing. The cafe is located right next to the Volga. The view is calming over the water.

(Translated by Google) Pros: The food is fantastic, the menu is extensive, and I was surprised by the selection of alcohol and local liqueurs. I liked that they host discos and guess-the-melody events. Cons: The waiter couldn't answer additional questions about the menu. Another point that might not be necessary, but we're used to in other cities, where the hostess says "goodbye" or "goodbye" when you leave. This place doesn't have that. Personally, I don't think the loft style makes the wall stickers look cheap. Otherwise, the guys are great; they could become top-notch.

(Translated by Google) Nice place on the waterfront. If you want to dine on a weekend or holiday, it is better to reserve a table. The cuisine is varied and cooked well. If only I could get rid of the smell that gets into the clothes, the establishment wouldn’t be worth the price) (Original)

(Translated by Google) Quite tasty. This is the only establishment in Uglich that we visited, so there is nothing to compare with) The burger with chicken breast has too much spicy-sweet sauce, there are no complaints about the rest. There is a small play area for children. Great view of the waterfront (Original) Довольно вкусно.

(Translated by Google) I was at the establishment on December 29th. The premises are good, the staff is friendly and pleasant. Compared to last year, the menu has changed; in my opinion, it has become less informative. There is also a problem with the sequence of serving dishes. It’s better not to order mussels; you can cook it much tastier at home if you have at least some cooking skills and searching for recipes on the Internet. The herring with potatoes and duck with pear were excellent. Borscht is standard. The establishment is worth a visit upon your arrival in Uglich.

(Translated by Google) A very nice cafe on the Volga embankment, not far from the pier, overlooking the Uglich Kremlin. Good selection of dishes, large portions. Everything is VERY tasty. Unobtrusive but fast service. The prices are quite high. You can come and just drink tea while admiring the views.
