Göbeklitepe is an ancient archaeological site located in the Sanliurfa region of Turkey, near the Syrian border. Dating back to around 10,000 BCE, this Neolithic structure consists of intricately carved T-shaped stone pillars believed to have served as a place of worship. Some theories suggest that it was a temple aligned with the constellation of Orion. The site features carvings of birds and animals on the pillars, offering a glimpse into early art and civilization.
The visitor center is perfectly done as a preparation for visiting the Göbeklitepe. I do admire how Turkey deals with such places! Since all historical landmarks that I have visited so far are very well organised and managed. The place is easy accessible to all kinds of tourists. There is a shuttle bus if you don’t want to walk in the hot.
Ivanka M — Google review
Interesting to visit, you can see the works still going on. Incredibly old. Visitors center, 3d videos, impressing. Shuttle from the entrance to the site, every 15 min. Not really cheap, 21 euro but one time it's worth it

The massive monoliths rise with a quiet, almost solemn power, evoking reverence and contemplation. The monoliths’ scale, craftsmanship, and arrangement within their megalithic enclosures evoke a feeling both earthly and eerily otherworldly. The stones exude authority, standing as a testament to human aspiration, determination, ingenuity, and the enduring allure of the unknown. Here, time bends. The world outside feels distant, irrelevant. A palpable sense of mystery lingers, thick as morning mist, as if the stones themselves hold secrets just beyond reach. Every detail and decoration adds to the enigma, every carved surface and weathered edge tells a story older than memory; hinting at rituals, gatherings, and intentions now lost to time, leaving the imagination to weave its own narratives.
Chingón898 — Google review
Göbeklitepe is honestly mind-blowing. You’re standing in front of stone pillars carved over 12,000 years ago — older than Stonehenge, older than the Pyramids — and you can feel how important this place was. The animal carvings, the perfect stone circles, the mystery of why it was built… it’s goosebumps stuff. Coming here with Turkish Airlines and GoTürkiye made it easy to experience not just the site, but also the amazing food and hospitality in Şanlıurfa. It’s one of those “humans did THIS?” moments I’ll never forget.
Alina P — Google review
Göbekli Tepe – The Dawn of Civilization Göbekli Tepe, located near Şanlıurfa in southeastern Turkey, is considered the world’s oldest known temple, dating back to around 9600 BCE. Discovered in the 1960s and excavated in the 1990s by German archaeologist Klaus Schmidt, the site has completely reshaped our understanding of early human history. The site features massive T-shaped stone pillars, some over 5 meters tall and weighing up to 20 tons, arranged in circular enclosures. These pillars are carved with reliefs of animals such as lions, foxes, and snakes, symbolizing deep spiritual or ritual meanings. What makes Göbekli Tepe extraordinary is that it was built by hunter-gatherer societies, long before agriculture or settled life began. This suggests that religion and communal rituals may have been the driving force behind the rise of civilization, rather than a result of it. Today, Göbekli Tepe stands as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a monumental testament to humanity’s early creativity, cooperation, and spirituality — a mysterious reminder of how our ancestors sought meaning thousands of years before written history.
ZazaPress — Google review
Incredible experience venturing to Gobekli tepe in Summer 2025 to explore this Mesopotamian site with ruins dating back 11,600 years (to an abrupt and significant global warming event, known as the end of the Younger Dryas, marking the beginning of the Holocene geological epoch). This rapid warming accelerated glacial retreat and led to a massive rise in sea levels, the collapse of the last major ice caps and had significant impacts on human populations, including newfound confirmed evidence of some of the earliest evidence of megalithic construction and civilization. Pleased to see excavations have resumed (jointly with DAI in conjunction with Turkish govt) with a strategic reduction of invasive infrastructure.
Kevin W — Google review
Göbekli Tepe is an ancient archaeological site in southeastern Turkey, near Sanliurfa. Large megalithic structures and circular enclosures featuring distinctive limestone T-shaped pillars, representing the world's oldest known temple complex, built by nomadic hunter-gatherers during the Pre-Pottery Neolithic period. It dates back to the late 10th to 9th millennia BC, with signs of human activity as far back as 11,000 BCE, predating Stonehenge by approximately 6,000 years. When you are told that it's older than Mesopotamia, you are impressed; when you see it with your own eyes - you are stunned!

I dined at the grill Çağdaş Ocakbaşı and enjoyed their delicious "Terbiyeli Tavuk" and "Ciger". The portion of the latter could have been larger, but the variety of salads included in the price made up for it. The "Ezme" was particularly delectable, perhaps even the best I've ever had. The prices were reasonable and the service was excellent.

Dessert restaurant
Çulcuoğlu Baklava&Restaurant offers a relaxed setting with a spacious terrace where classic Lahmacun and kebabs, among other dishes, are served. The starters and kebabs are delicious, particularly those featuring local flavors like walnuts and pomegranate. Popular recommendations include the eggplant kebab and Urfa kebab. Make sure to order desserts early as they tend to sell out quickly.
This is a huge restaurant - two buildings together plus outdoor seating. Everything was scrumptious - all vegetables and several meats we tried, including several baklavas that we had.

Delicious kebabs and starters. The local dishes with walnuts and pomegranate are wonderful. The eggplant kebab is recommended as is the Urfa kebab. The desserts go quickly so order with your meal to arrive at the end. The restaurant is clean, the service was outstanding and the price was good. Lots of locals were here so that was a great sign.
Anderson E — Google review
We were crowded but the staff was fast, polite, responsive and smiling. The best thing I liked was the "içli köfte" it was totally amazing. Since we were a large group, the restaurant might have been warned to not put too much spice in the meat but there was none at all on the kebabs, which made them bland. The lahmacun was just tasteless meat with a lot of oil sitting on a piece of thin bread. I am an easy guy, it it easy to make me happy with food but that was not good. There was no spice in our food in the temple of spices, Şanlıurfa. The dessert was very low quality, the tea was tasteless, sorry.

It was very central, near to our hotel, the kebabs and the appetizers (içli köfte, lahmacun and çiğ köfte) were delicious and the service was quick. The tea afterwards was nice, unluckily there was no desser left, which shows their desserts are also wonderful. Went back the day after, definitely recommend it .

After an incredible visit to #Gobeklitepe, make your way back to Sanliurfa for a delectable lunch at Cevahir Han. The drive of 30-40 minutes is well worth it as the dining experience here is truly exceptional. With a fixed menu for groups, you'll have the opportunity to sample everything from their extensive lunch/dinner selection.
I am not speaking for the hotel, but for the restaurant they have. I was looking for a place where they would have an English menu and when I found this one, I was very happy. I brought my mom here and we had an amazing dinner. Every dish was simply delicious. The service is very attentive and they do their best to speak English and to accommodate you as a tourist. I can highly recommend this place - we loved it, especially the pita with cheese! The prices as a European are also as you can imagine excellent. Really great food. Will definitely go again if I come here.

We were looking for a vegetarian friendly restaurant and came upon Cevahir. We had a great time, everything was delicious. The waiters that served us İlyas, Kerim, Nazif, Lokman and Süleyman were very attentive and friendly. We had the çiğ köfte, veggie casserole, gavurdag salad and katmer. Highly recommended!
Ceyda T — Google review
Absolutely terrible service, took 10 minutes to flag someone down to clean our table and waited another 15 mins without anyone coming to take our order or give water. We watched 3 other guest be seated and waited on after we got there, after we mentioned we had been waiting. Just left. Ive never written a review before it was so infuriating.

Wonderful traditional Turkish breakfast is available for non residents. On entering the courtyard from the street, you are greeted with a warm welcome and shown to a table. Very quickly, a large flask of tea, a bottle of water, a huge round turntable of 22 small dishes arrives: aubergines, charred peppers, tomatoes, cucumber, potatoes, 4 different types of olives, 2 cheeses, delicious honey, butter, jam, marmalade and more, accompanied by fresh warm bread, menemen, a spicy omelette, chips - an absolute feast and that is just for one person! Super friendly service and a special shout out to Hassan who was lovely and remembered me from the previous day. Best breakfast in Turkey!
P M — Google review
Mediocre! I can't describe it any other way! We're travelling the region, inevitably eating our fair share of kebabs and this was, without doubt, the most disappointing we've had, in an area renowned for its cuisine. My wife had lahmacun and couldn't finish it because it was burnt and tasteless. I had fıstık kebab, which was fine but unexciting! In fairness, the soup we had was good! The bill was double what we've paid in other places - still not exactly expensive, but just not worth the extra money! Simply dull!
Rob G — Google review
I couldnt wait to write the review and am writing it while still sitting here and sipping my tea. What an amazing place and the food is honestly to die for. We were a bit hesitant coming in because many places get tourist reviews but the food is not up to the mark. We had such an experience yesterday at Mardin where we doned at a popular restaurant and it was such a disappointment. This place on the contrary is an absolute gem. Thanks to Suleman we were able to navigate through the menu and he guided us to order the perfect combination of dishes for us. We couldn't figure out which one tasted better than the other. Service was impeccable extremely attentive. Kunafe was perfectly done and not over sweet and the tea was fresh. Wish we had more time here in sanliurfa to come back and try more dishes. But who knows we may come back all this way just to eat another meal here. Thank you to everyone for making this the highlight of our trip here.
Naushin S — Google review
We had wanted to try the breakfast but at 12:50pm was told it was too late. So instead we got a couple salads which were super refreshing and just right for the hot weather. The vegetable casserole was well seasoned and flavored. Tried the Ağzı Açık too which we just learned about at the Kitchen Museum nearby and it was crispy and pretty good. Appreciated the watermelon they treated us. Overall great service.

The hotel was great. Wonderfull and professional staff, free parking, good location, nice room, excellent breakfast. The building allows for many alternatives just to sit down and have a tea and enjoy the stone house corners or terrase. Some may find it less quiet due to rooms facing the atrium.

Terrible. We pointed out that the chips that came with the döner were cold and plasticky from having sat out for so long, to which they offered to put them in the microwave... For day 2, we recommend exploring the south side side of town. Start the day off with Fish Lake, then wind down and take it easy by the time you get to Mevlid-i Halilulrahman Mağarası. All together, your day would be filled with about 7 hours of non-stop fun.

Balıklıgöl, also known as Urfa man, is a remarkable attraction in Sanliurfa. It features the world's oldest life-sized statue of a man and a skillfully constructed replica of the Gobeklitepe temple. Located near the Sanliurfa Castle, this site has been revered since the time of Prophet Abraham and continues to welcome visitors from all over the world.
Really beautiful area. You can feed the fish for 10 Turkish Lira. There isn’t a rush or queue to get there. You just walk in and there is plenty of space to roam around. Just don’t bother the fish, it’s considered disrespectful.

This is a very unique place to visit. Entry is free. I came on a weekend and although the park and fish lake in particular were busy, you could still find your own space and relax. The park and lake are clean and inviting. The scenery is relaxing. It's definitely a great place for families, too.

This beautiful location has a deep history about Prophet Ibrahim (as). A quick google research can tell you the story behind this beautiful scenery. You can feed the fish for a bout 10 turkish lira and have a drink of water that is believed to have a healing power.

The locals are more traditional than Istanbul and also much more friendlier and welcoming. At around 10:30 there were much less people and more quiet. As the day progressed it got way more busier but still had a serenity to it (felt peaceful and relaxed). The food just outside was yummy as well, the Adana kebab and tavuk sis…

The Fish Lake is also known as the Pool of Sacred Fish - Balıklıgöl in Turkish. It's size is just 150 meters long and 30 meters wide and it has a tremendous religious and historical significance: Balıklıgöl is believed to be the very site where the Prophet Abraham (Ibrahim) was miraculously saved from being burned alive by the tyrant King Nimrod. Even if you are not a strong believer, the surrounding area is very beautiful to walk around!

Kızılkoyun Roma Mezarları is a protected cultural area with 103 unique tombs dating back to the Roman period in Edessa. The caves, once used for burial by the people of that time, display artifacts now exhibited in the city's Archaeological Museum. Some caves feature carved statues and door mechanisms. The site is easily accessible and close to other tourist attractions in Urfa.
Was walking back and I saw this place. When I went there was absolutely no one there, not a visitor or member of staff. Entry is free and you can roam around freely. Giving this a 5 star as it’s free so you can’t really complain; i didn’t go into each cave. Just don’t go OUT OF YOUR WAY to come here.
Mohammed R — Google review
Free caves you can walk around. One of the reasons Turkey is great, they have places like this open to the public. Close to the Archaeological Museum. These are Roman era tombs.
Timothy V — Google review
An easily accessible archeological site right in the centre of all attractions in Şanlıurfa. We visited during the cooler evening hours and were accompanied by the local official archeologist who showed us the burial sites and explained some of the rituals. Strongly recommend. It takes about half an hour to an hour to check out the chambers and try to locate the hidden passages. Entrance was free.
Zeki A — Google review
The Roman period necropolis is located in the center of Urfa, opposite of mosaic museum. The entrance is free. I visited during the day, but the caves are illuminated in the evening.
Gulnabat B — Google review
Roman era caves carved into the hillside Dating from the Roman period, when Edessa was ruled by the Abgarid Dynasty, these caves show how the people of this time buried their dead. There are a number of caves but not all are accessible. Some of the caves of richer families show carved statues, and some have door mechanisms still in place. The site is free to enter, and is close to other tourist sites in Urfa, such as the Pool of Abraham.

Museum
The Haleplibahçe Mosaic Museum is a must-visit attraction in Sanliurfa, Turkey. The museum is housed in a covered circular building and showcases mostly intact mosaics that were originally the floor of an ancient Roman townhouse. These remarkable mosaics were discovered by chance during construction work to improve the museum's sewage system.
We visited this area years ago when the mosaics were still being excavated, and it's amazing to see them now. The museum is a fantastic place, and it's great that the mosaics, like the Zebra Tamer and the Amazon women, are displayed right where they were found. The best part is that the museum is right next to the Archaeology Museum, and you can visit both with the same ticket. And don't worry about the heat outside—the museum is nice and cool inside, so you can enjoy all the amazing history without getting hot. We were hoping to explore the caves nearby, but it was just too hot outside. Still, the museum itself is absolutely worth seeing. I highly recommend it!
Zerdesh R — Google review
Beautiful and historic array of mosaics depicting Amazonian mythology as well as Achilles story. Some very intricate and the scale is surprising.
JJ H — Google review
I really loved the preserved mosaics. The ticket for this museum is valid for the other one as well.
Plamen T — Google review
Such a unique experience! I never imagined I’d learn about the stories of the Amazon women in a museum in Urfa. The tale of Achilles was also fascinating! Definitely a must-visit museum, you should spend at least 1–2 hours here
Dr. S — Google review
They expect me to pay another 10€ just to see this "mosaics annex", even though I already bought a ticket yesterday for the main museum. Not only are prices in Turkish museums extremely high now, but they’re also getting very greedy.

Great, well set up, and impressive quality despite the gaps in the mosaics. Main tip: get an English-native graduate student in classical history rewrite the descriptions. The current “tureng” texts really do not do justice to either the mosaics or the myths and figures depicted.

Urfa Castle, an ancient fortress dating back to antiquity, offers a captivating glimpse into history and stunning panoramic views of the city. Situated atop a hill in the old town, this open-air museum is a must-see attraction. As you ascend the steps near Mevlid-Halil Mosque, you'll encounter charming restaurants where you can savor Turkish tea and hookah.
It's very intersting historical place

Looks very cool from the outside. You can’t go inside but I’m guessing there is little to see. The walls are immense. It dominates the hill behind the town centre. It must have been an amazing place in its grand period.,
Jeremy K — Google review
Unfortunately the castle was closed to visitors due to restoration (we visited here in the end of February). From outside, especially at night, the castle looks gorgeous. You might climb up and take a walk around the castle. The surroundings of the castle offer the best city views of Urfa. These very spots are the most picturesque and instagrammable places where you can witnessed the best views of the city.
Argun K — Google review
Impressive fortress sitting on the top of a hill in the old town. Unfortunately it was closed during my visit for restoration work (which sadly in Turkey often means rebuilding). The views of the city from the walk up to and around the walls were magnificent. There are plenty of tea houses and cafes on and around the stairs and walkways. The locals who live alongside the back side of the fortress were friendly. Visit their cafes for even more affordable beverage options.
Anderson E — Google review
Currently under renovations and thus closed to the public, the urfa castle and its walls sit atop a hill and the city views from the top can only be described as magnificent. After my careful tour around the castle through a petty road, the glimpses and views that awaited me, caught me in great awe and more admiration for history.

The prophet Abraham is believed to have been born in the cave by this compact site with a minaret.
I recently visited the Mevlid-i Halilulrahman Cave and was deeply moved by the experience. This historic site in Sanliurfa is not just a cultural exuberance but a spiritual treasure, rumored to be the birthplace of Prophet Ibrahim. The cave is well-maintained and illuminated, creating a serene atmosphere that fills you with a sense of peace. Inside, you can see religious books and sajjadas laid out, adding to the spiritual ambiance. The presence of a spring water source inside the cave is a highlight, with visitors often filling their bottles with this water, believed to be healing. What's more, there's a small mosque inside where you can pray, adding to the cave's tranquility. It's a must-visit for anyone seeking a deep cultural and spiritual experience in the heart of Sanliurfa
Orzujon A — Google review
It’s a bit difficult to find, but if you follow the groups, which you can see all across the gardens, you will find the Abraham Cave. We just followed what the people in front of us were doing so there are two separate entrances one for woman one for men. Head cover is required for women. People are in prayer on the inside. It’s a beautiful occasion to visit and dig into local culture.
Ve D — Google review
It is said that this is where the Prophet Abraham was born. He was deliberately born in a cave so that his whereabouts would be unknown to the king who was ruling at the time. The king once dreamed that his kingdom would be destroyed by a man, so he killed the baby boy. Another opinion says that he was not born in the cave but was simply hidden. His mother abandoned him, and then Abraham sucked his finger as a substitute for breast milk. Beyond this story, the atmosphere there is magical. People enter the cave in an orderly manner. Because it is crowded, the air inside the cave feels a little stuffy. A tradition has spread among the community that visitors must exit the cave with their backs to each other as a sign of respect.

As a foreign tourist, this was the best place I've visited in Turkiye so far. A very holy place and when Prohet Ibrahim AS was born. I only wish there was more religious figures there to explain and guide. Nevertheless this place is great and I would definitely visit again.

A site believed to be the hiding place of Abraham Abraham is the traditional site of the birthplace of Abraham and it is here that he is said to have been hidden from the wicked King Nimrod. It is a place of worship, at the foot of the castle hill. It can be entered through the courtyard of the mosque, and is split into two sections for men and women. There are queues to enter, as it is a very small area and popular with many pilgrims. It doesn’t take too long to see however.

This Cave is a must see when you visit Sanliurfa and the Balikli Gol area. The Prophet Abraham recognized from the 3 main religions, is said to be born in this cave and the water in the cave is considered as healthy after Zam Zam water.

A group of seven Canadian individuals visited the Mandelion Hotel's restaurant in September 2022. The establishment offered live music, creating a delightful atmosphere and an opportunity for everyone to sing along with the local tunes. Moreover, customers could even request the musicians to perform at their tables. In terms of beverages, the restaurant primarily served red wine, both dry and sweet varieties being available at a price of 100TL per glass.
7 of us from Canada went to Mandelion hotel restaurant Sept 2022. They have live music which is great, we wished we knew all the songs like the locals did so we could sing along. They will even play at your table if you want them to. For wine they only have red - a dry or sweet. We had the dry and it was good. 100TL a glass. They also have raki, beer and a variety of other hard liquor and liqueurs. They have atom mezze which is delicious and their beef tenderloin and lamb chops were cooked perfectly. The roasted vegetables and gravy with the tenderloin were so good as well. No potatoes or rice served with the meat which would’ve been nice but still an amazing meal. Highly recommend for a fun evening out in a beautiful courtyard with music and wine.
J W — Google review
We are giving this place a 1 star review: We asked twice what the price of 50cl of Raki. The first time we were told maybe 1,700tl. We ask for an exact price. After several minutes we were told it was 1,700tl. When the bill came it was 2,350tl. When we questioned the price we were told that was the correct price. We said we would pay the quoted price of 1,700tl. The server said he would speak with the boss. After several minutes and several attempts to discuss the price of 2,350tl; the server returned with a corrected bill. Sadly, this place lives up to the previous 1star reviews which we read before going …. But, we wanted to give the restaurant its own chance …. Big mistake. If you want cold beer, raki and good food find yourself at Porto Blu. A great place with honest prices.

We didn’t want to go to the night time dinner activity on our tour - and we were all so pleased we didn’t because we found this lovely little restaurant. Food was delicious, we had the Baulto (Turkish red wine) which was fabulous, and the service was top notch - helpful, smiling and informative. Great place for good food! Meat is superb, nice service. A bit outside of the city center, but you won't regret.

Friendly service, but they might trick you into paying for more than you've ordered. Check your bill!!! A bit far from the city centre. Nice ambient, inside or outside space, great decor. Bathroom is clean, and has the Western toilet option, with the auto changing plastic on the seat, however no toilet paper! Great Mixed grill, delicious meat. Grilled lamb chops, beef steak, lamb kebab, chicken kebab, grilled chicken breast, and kofte. Some grilled tomatoes and chili. I arrived and asked for the menu. I pointed for what I wanted, the mixed grill, 55 TL (not cheap, but I wanted to try it). The food itself is very good, however they have served me salad and sauces , bread, water... And tried to charge me another almost 20 TL for it... They should have either mentioned the prices, or showed me the menu so I could choose my sides. Since they didn't, I thought they were included, as I was paying already a fairly high price. They eventually removed the extra charges and allowed me to pay the amount of my mixed grill, however not a pleasant experience. I wouldn't go back.
