Very nice little space. Groaning with history from its Roman fountain to a 16th Century abattoir & butchers shop, not to mention a discrete little balcony at the corner of what is now the Tourist Information office.

Baeza Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral of the Nativity of Saint Mary, is a must-see attraction in the charming town of Baeza, Spain. This medieval-era church showcases a blend of architectural styles and features a museum and lookout tower. The Gothic-style cathedral, built in the 16th century, boasts an impressive facade adorned with intricate details such as carved sculptures and reliefs.
Impressive architecture. 3D tour with glasses is so much fun. Ancient books are amazing.

€7 per adult gets you the church, cloister and tower, plus a free audio guide. The interior is as you would expect. The tower has 170 steps to the top and you are warned that the bells will ring at midday.
Motorhome Q — Google review
Light and airy Spanish Renaissance cathedral. Bells tower, 169 steps, provides a very good view of Baeza and the surrounding countryside. The cloisters are pleasant, the 2.2 metre high silver remonstrance is impressive. Audioguide available in English, too much detail for my taste.

180 steps up to the bell tower... but well worth the view...
Sophie D — Google review
Beautiful architecture and atmosphere and courtyard with bell tower, lots of stairs if you aren't fit stop off on the landings and view the townscape
Linda K — Google review
The cathedral is a city site you need to visit, but I must say that if you are allowing tourists to go to the top of the tower the least it can have is a rail so you can hold yourself. It is not very safe.

Fountains
The Fountain of St Mary in Baeza is a stunning Renaissance monument that stands as one of Andalucia's most exquisite and unique fountains. Situated in the heart of a grand square, it is surrounded by magnificent UNESCO World Heritage buildings, enhancing its charm and allure. This authentic gem symbolizes the rich history and cultural significance of Baeza, making it an essential sight to behold for anyone exploring this captivating city in Jaen province.
(Translated by Google) Beautiful fountain located in the center of the square of the same name, between the Seminary of Sant Felip Neri and the Cathedral. The work of the Baezano architect Ginés Martínez in 1564, who was also responsible for the project of the water main in the city. It features a triple triumphal arch crowned by a large triangular pediment supported by Atlanteans. The fountain of Santa Maria gives us a perspective of the whole square which is unbeatable: the cathedral, the seminary and the council houses. And it is located in an emblematic place of the city, very close to the church of Santa Cruz and the old University. Its appearance is totally 'Roman'. This is confirmed by the female figures on the columns are caryatids that recall the splendor of Julius Caesar's empire and the half-naked figures that flank the fronts of Philip II's weapons are mythological Atlanteans. The orange stone that shines is different from the rest of the square, and its arches, which must have been in the heights, are only a few centimeters from the water due to the minimal height of the columns.

Its waters come from the Celadilla mine, 2.5 km away. (Translated by Google) Since the conquest of Baeza in 1227 by King Ferdinand III, the City Council regularly met in this same square. Already in the 16th century, at the same time as the construction of the cathedral, this same council ordered the construction of a fountain to commemorate the bringing of water to the city from the Celadillas mine. The fountain is shaped like a Roman triumphal arch supported by four double columns, each topped by eight small caryatid-like figures. At the top are four tenant figures next to the coat of arms of King Philip II. Ideally, enjoy it as secluded as possible, avoiding large groups of people. If possible, it's worth strolling through this square at night. The lighting and the surroundings of the cathedral, the San Felipe Neri Seminary, and the Jabalquinto Palace are pure magic, transporting you back in time.

Beautiful world heritage site. The town of Baeza is very beautiful. we went in February only to check out sights. Unfortunately, we arrived during lunchtime, and a lot of the touristic sites were closed for lunch. Palace Jabalquinto, located in Baeza, is a stunning example of Isabelline Gothic architecture. The palace boasts a magnificent facade adorned with decorative elements and a Renaissance-style patio featuring marble columns and an elegant fountain. The building's Moorish influence is evident in its stalactite decoration, adding to its unique charm. Visitors can also admire the elaborate iron screens at the nearby 16th-century cathedral.

. Amazing! Like a lot of the rest of the town, this Renaissance-style palace has somehow managed to survive the vicissitudes of the centuries to present this beautiful face today. It has obviously been modernised and restored, as it now has electric lights, central heating and modern plumbing, all unknown when it was built, of course! But it has been done so sympathetically that it does not intrude on the original splendour. You must go inside - it's a university college but just walk straight in - and see the cloister. You can sit there a while and ponder, read a book. Preferably not eat a sandwich - it is a place of learning and not a picnic place! Take photos - it's gorgeous inside and out. .

A nice restaurant in the heart of the old town behind the Palacio de Jabalquinto with a lovely terrace (in addition to a stylish inside). The food choices are an interesting combination of Spanish cuisine with an Asian influence. We had croquettes to share (very good) followed by chicken teriyaki (very generous portion and quite good quality although the sauce was a bit overpowering). But a big round of applause for the waiting staff! It is a popular location and by 8.45 (15 minutes after opening), it was full with some people wanting to go to a nearby concert at 9.30. And the staff were brilliant at managing everyone. Happy to recommend.

It showcases intriguing displays of historical olive presses, and the audio guide adequately guides visitors around the premises. However, one might desire to learn more about the modern olive oil industry rather than just its past. Overall, it offers a satisfying half-day outing at a reasonable cost.
Wow this place must really have been something in the late 1800s. Huge old estate with a massive pre-industrial olive oil factory. Loads of old vintage presses, good explanations (the written ones only in spanish, the audio guide in a range of languages). Good (rapid) oil tasting workahop. Kids enjoyed it and of enormous interest to anyone with even a slight interest in the history. We learnt a huge amount (admittedly from a low Base!).

A lovely informative museum. However, please be aware that, despite us being advised, the museum would close at 1.30pm, when we got to the exit at 1.10pm, we discovered that the door was padlocked, and everyone had gone. We rang the phone numbers on the museums information brochure to advise them of our predicament. The one number had a recorded message only, on the other number I spoke to 2 people, neither seemed to comprehend that we had been locked IN the museum, they told us to wait for a minute, then they ended the call. We waited a further 10 minutes. No one rang back or arrived to let us out. As the museum did not open again until 10 am the next day, i.e., in over 20 hours time, we walked back through the museum, to where we remembered seeing a restaurant next door. By shouting and waving our arms, we were able to attract the attention of the hotel/restaurant staff. They helped us climb over a wall to get out! That is OK for youngsters, but not so much fun when you are seniors!

Excellent Finca olive museum and tasting tour. Rather than a visit to a large industrial oil factory, with busloads of visitors, we chose this century old Family farm visit. I would strongly recommend to choose this version of an olive museum and tasting tour. You need to have a car to get there but its totally worth your while. Our tour guide (spanish/english) was extremely well versed in the olive oil trade as she is the grand daughter of one of the finca owners :-) they have an excellent realtime web based booking process indicating even last minute availabilities. The shop has all the top notch olive oil based products of the jaen region. I highly recommend this excursion.

Nice museum. It gives good explanation about harvesting, pressing and storage of olives and oil. But there are other options not shown. No tasting, no info about the pulp and the use of the residue. Access is €6,- per adult.

We visited a few days ago. We were offered a tasting of olive oil by one of the assistants. She was very good and even gave us the best restaurants to try in her home town. So we recommended that she visit our home town of Canterbury Kent.

A very interesting place to visit and not too busy during the week in the summer. They have some interesting examples of old olive presses and the audio guide is sufficient to guide you around the premises. Although I would have liked to discover more about the olive oil industry today than yesteryear. All in all a good half day out at a reasonable price.

Really glad we found this place. We did the self guided tour and had the olive oil tasting at the end. Discovered a lot about olive oil. Also the shop has a great selection of olive oils many of which are produced locally.

The classroom where Antonio Machado taught in the past is incredibly well-preserved, giving visitors a glimpse into the materials and furniture used during that time period, almost a century ago. Despite being occupied by visiting students during the Machadian Days event, the museum, courtyard, and auditorium were particularly captivating.

This is the classroom where the Spanish poet Antonio Machado taught school in the early part of the twentieth century. Paseo de la Constitucion is a popular tourist spot in Baeza, offering a perfect place to unwind and grab refreshments. Its terraces provide an ideal vantage point to observe the lively atmosphere of the city. Additionally, it holds the ruins of San Francisco, an ancient monastery affected by the Lisbon earthquake. This attraction has garnered positive reception from both locals and authorities and is recognized as a World Heritage site.
I came to Baeza on a day-trip, expecting nothing. I wanted to see the local historical buildings and enjoy some food and drinks. I was very pleasantly surprised that there was a live concert in the very middle of the city. Traditional singing turned into rock/pop by Gamorrarock absolutely lighting up the crowd for over 2 hours straight. The sound emanated around the city, so this square was not hard to find, I had a very nice time at this free concert, that must have had a crowd of around 500, there weren’t just people from Baeza, but also people who came from nearby cities like Úbeda to see this show that I didn’t even know would be happening. The atmosphere was excellent, I had a very good time dancing and enjoying the joy that everyone around me was full of. Made a random day-trip, a highlight to remember.

A notable historical site in Baeza is the Aliatares Tower, situated on Obispo Narvaez Street. This ancient structure not only holds great significance in the town but also serves as a key monument. It acted as a fortified tower that controlled the entry points to the city. The tower has been excellently preserved and stands in the heart of Baeza's center.

(Translated by Google) It is part of the Spanish Historical Heritage. It was part of the urban wall, whose Islamic design dates back to the 16th century. XI., It is 25 meters high, with a square floor plan and four loopholes. Built in the 12th century by the Arabs, its name comes from the tribe that owned it before the conquest. It was also called around the 15th century, from the altars. In 1476 Isabel la Católica ordered its demolition, which it survived. It later served multiple uses: Recruitment, nobles' prison, dovecote... In the 19th century, the clock was added: The council initially tried to do it by making 6 bullfights to pay for it, but they did not arrive for it. And later the battlements were added, copied from those of the Villalar arch, which was paid for by a merchant, punished for not wanting to remove the boxes from his store. With all these changes, the strange thing is that it survives, even with a different image and purposes. If we start the visit to Baeza in the Plaza del Populo, it catches us halfway, after walking through the Plaza de la Constitución, towards the statue of D. Antonio Machado, near the Casino and the Salcedo palace, where sitting in his bench, on which he rests with his hat, reads a book, whose author may be, as it was written: "I read one / by Unamuno." The tower, located next to the Plaza de España, is today surrounded by much more modern buildings, many of them with arcades and numerous cafes, restaurants, banks and shops, among which the local oil shops could not be missed.

Very upset because of the woman working the cathedral as can be seen here. So upset as to cause our entire group to leave Baeza early and not spend the night as originally planned. 6 people, 3 hotel rooms, lunch, dinner, breakfast, souvenirs, entrance fees etc you do the math. Money your town could have used. The woman pictured here was probably the most incompetent, lazy, rude , unqualified person I have met on my travels in Spain to date. We arrived to the cathedral at 1:55 PM on a Sunday and it closes at 2:30 pm. She refused to let us see it because she said last call is 30 minutes before close. We arrived plenty early. She is just lazy and don’t want to do her job that’s it. This is a very bad look on your town and makes me not want to recommend to anybody in my traveling circle. We spend 2 days in ubeda before and had a fantastic experience. With the sour taste in my mouth I would gladly recommend ubeda to anybody because frankly that town was great. I am sitting here writing this review in my hotel room in Jaén when it should have been in Baeza. If you can prove to me that this incompetent and lazy good for nothing is fired and has absolutely no job provided by the city then I will amend this review as well as my cathedral review and consider returning to Baeza to give it a second chance. Until then i will have nothing but negative things to say about Baeza to any friend or acquaintances who Is planning a trip to Spain. PS: I know that Spain’s youth unemployment rate is absurdly high. Please do the right thing and fire this woman and give the job to somebody who actually deserves it.

Several residents are being harassed and treated unfairly for feeding stray cats, when in reality they are doing voluntary and necessary work that falls under the City Council's responsibility under the Animal Welfare Law (Law 7/2023). Instead of supporting them, their food bowls are being taken away, they are being disrespected, and no solution or CER (Capture, Neuter, and Return) program is being offered. This not only demonstrates a lack of sensitivity and responsibility, but also a lack of awareness of the law. Baeza could be an example of coexistence and respect for animals, but unfortunately, the City Council is displaying an attitude of abandonment and disregard for those who help the most. Lovely small place, with a little chaos. Made place even though they were near full for 7 of us. Enthusiastic staff, with one translating the Spanish to English for us. Food was great, and abundant.

(Translated by Google) We were looking for a place to have some tapas at midday and replenish our energy. When we arrived at the restaurant, they treated us very kindly, prepared a table and turned on the heater, which is appreciated when the sun is hidden. We ordered a couple of red wines (€3) with their tapa. We opted for the DaVinci salad (€15), half a portion of goat cheese croquettes (€7.50) and a scrambled eggs and octopus (€18). Everything was delicious and adequate in quantities! A little expensive, but it's quality. Without a doubt we recommend it, based on the photos I attach. Good site! ¡Buen sitio!

The service was deplorable, a guy named José was yelling... and regarding the food, they served us some "au gratin" tapas with a foul or very strong smell. When we fried the fish, we found worms in the cod. His explanation was: "That's from the skin, and if they're worms, it's fine because they're frozen at -22 degrees and fried at 180 degrees." We found the worms inside the fish, not in the skin. I DO NOT RECOMMEND IT. This was such a good find and we (family of 4) we so happy we found it. The food was amazing. Scrambled eggs with Morcilla (black pudding) incredible Serrano ham was delicious even my 10yr old picky boy was loving it for the the first time we also had Iberian pork skewers and it was so well cooked and so full of flavour leaving us all wanting more. The server (wish we got his name) was so helpful and so friendly we all would definitely recommend for anyone seeking a good meal at reasonable price and delicious food 👌

We ate seafood/chicken Paella a week ago or so and can only say it was excellent. Perfect made rice and well balanced taste, it took 20 min. approx. but that is expected from a freshly prepared food. We can only recommend the place.

Good localy cooked food and tasty. But the service deteriorated as the meal continued. We had a reasonably priced menu del dia for 12€ however, after finding a small piece of metal in my potatoe starter, which was shrugged off by the waiter as if this was nothing to be concerned about and was never mentioned again. The service got slower and slower to the point that we had to ask to be brought our dessert after 15 minutes of waiting. The 3 stars are given because of the taste of the food and the fact the food was cooked well. But i would not eat there again.

La Barbería is an establishment that specializes in tapas and beverages, offering outdoor seating on a patio, walls made of corrugated metal, and charming rustic interiors. This restaurant stands out for its generosity by providing complimentary tapas alongside regular orders of drinks and food. The prices are normal for Baeza. The food was ok, the service too. Some of the food at least must be cooked from frozen as the chicken bits I had were cold inside though I suspect pre-booked so no problem I suppose, just a shame to pay so much for frozen food. Kind of makes covid fear all the more stupid when you could be looking at food poisoning which is worse.......

Fuente de los Leones is a beautiful and ancient fountain situated in the old town of Baeza. The pillar of the fountain has a unique mixtilinear profile with sculptures of lions with curly manes on top, from which water flows. (Translated by Google) We find it in the center of the current square that receives the same name. Located in the Plaza del Pópulo in Baeza. The waters captured by the Moro Mine, excavated at the beginning of the 16th century in the Miocene sandstones, to the NE of the city, reached it. The fountain with a mixtilinear cup with curves in the corners that consists of lions and oxen as ornamental elements, from whose mouth water flows through separate spouts and which, apparently, come from the Ibero-Roman ruins of Cástulo. In the center and on a column, a female figure stands out that tradition and historians attribute to Imilce, wife of Hannibal (her head was destroyed during the Civil War). The Moro Mine provided a flow of 6-15 l/s at the end of the 19th century, although of worse quality than that of the Arca del Agua mine. Its waters also reached other public fountains, among which the Fuente del Moro stands out, remodeled at the end of the 19th century to build a monumental neoclassical watering hole on top of it to magnify the horse races that were held in El Ejido. It is a very low flow urban source. Almost always sold out. It is in a very good state of conservation, with the impact on flow due to pumping or diversion being one of its impacts or threats. Access to the source is easy and public use is high. The water comes from the Los Llanos Plateau, the nature of the rocks through which the groundwater is supposed to circulate, being dentritic. It presents high sectoral values from points of view such as historical-sociocultural, architectural and identity (rootedness, popular appreciation) (Original) La encontramos en el centro de la actual plaza que recibe el mismo nombre.

On a pedestal is the central figure that could have been a funerary sculpture of Himílce, an Iberian princess of Oreta origin who was the wife of the Carthaginian general Aníbal Barca.

Plaza de Santa María is a cherished gem that evokes fond memories of childhood, filled with laughter and playful adventures. This enchanting square has left an indelible mark on my life, nurturing my passion for the rich history and art of Baeza. It serves as a vibrant hub where the community gathers to celebrate significant events, blending cultural heritage with local spirit. Restaurante Ajedrea in Andalusia offers a delightful dining experience with its use of fresh ingredients and friendly, skilled service. Customers have praised the restaurant for its nourishing meals that allow the true flavors to shine. One diner's wife, who has sampled cheesecakes throughout Spain, confidently declares that this is the best she has ever had. Visitors appreciate the delicious variety of dishes available at Restaurante Ajedrea, all of which are prepared to perfection.
Excellent Spanish restaurant with a modern flair. The menu offers a mix of traditional and creative dishes. We started with the tomato salad, followed by "fideuá del senyoret" and "bacalao a la baezana". Everything was delicious, although the tomato salad was a bit too salty. Ajedrea is also one of the few places in Spain that knows how to make a real brownie.

Good lord the food was good. Such a chill vibe while you know a brilliant chef in the back is ensuring your culinary desires are met. Such a varied and unique menu. Not only that but reasonably priced, but make no mistake the food is exceptional! Recommend!!

Absolutely loved this place!! Fantastic vegetarian options, especially the avocado tacos and the best parrillada de verduras that I’ve ever had. The waiter was great and also made sure to bring us vegetarian tapas with each drink. 10/10!!

If you want modern thinking fantastic food in Baeza then come here. We were turned away from the local trad taberna as it was reservation only and so came here....the best thing that could have happened to us on a surprisingly chilly Jan eve. The staff are very friendly and the food is FANTASTIC!!! Come here if you are in Baeza

We came Thursday evening for a light bite as we had a heavy lunch. Nibbled on a few things and were impressed so made a reservation for Saturday lunch (reservations are a must for weekends especially as the place is quite small). Good value wines by the glass and bottle. Food impeccable. We had the cogollos and the steak tartare with bone marrow. Just ordered dessert. I rarely review while I am still in the restaurant but could not wait 😂

Fresh ingredients prepared so that you can taste them, friendly and competent service, make for an excellent dining experience. We went twice and were delighted both times. I left with the sensation of having been nourished by real food. My wife has tried cheesecake all over Spain and declares this is the best she has had.

Restaurant Ajedrea is the best restaurant we came across in Andalusia. We did have dinner and the day after lunch with restaurant Ajedrea. We tried as much dishes as possible and all were delicious. Also the service was very special. We even were brought back to our hotel while no taxi was available anymore.

Following a previous reviewer mentioning vegetarian options, we booked this place for our second night of a two-night stay in Baeza. I was a little tired of patatas bravas every night, and wanted something nicer. We were steered right by past reviews! The food was exceptional; the service was excellent and very polite and friendly; vegetarian tapas came out with each drink; there were several choices from the main dishes too - everything we had was fantastic. The artichokes in romanesco sauce; the avocado and pico de gallo tacos; everything! Our waiter had a very friendly and polite manner and explained the menu and wines perfectly to us. Exceptional value for the standard of food, the wonderful and calm surroundings, the well-chosen wines and dessert and dessert wine... highly recommended!

We entered Flipper Cervecería Restaurante for breakfast and ordered two toast with tomato and ham, two coffees with milk and a ColaCao. The toast was delicious, made with excellent bread. The tomato and ham were served separately, allowing us to customize our toast with a generous amount of toppings. Their selection of oil was outstanding, giving us the freedom to use whichever we preferred. The service was quick and efficient, while the prices were very affordable at just 8.

(Translated by Google) Nice cervecería where, according to good Spanish custom, you are served a tapa with every drink - you get very full, so to speak, if you drink a lot ;-) The orders were delivered quickly and correctly. Since you can't choose the tapas, they are a matter of taste, as not everyone likes everything. Nestled in the charming town of Baeza, Palacio de Gallego Restaurante & Boutique is a culinary treasure that promises an unforgettable dining experience. This Michelin-recommended establishment boasts a stunning terrace adorned with beautiful decor, creating a serene atmosphere perfect for enjoying exquisite meals. Guests rave about the high-quality dishes prepared with fresh ingredients, including unique offerings like fried aubergine and grilled Iberico ham. The ambiance is enhanced by the soothing sounds of a garden fountain and the delightful aroma of olive wood grilling.
Wow. I wanted to have a small lunch but ended up with a full grand super good food. This is a hidden gem for sure. You pass it easily as its on a patio. Highly recommend. Service awesome. All grilled on olive wood the food. Top dishes. And the steak was just mouthwatering. Huge selection of wine as well but as I was alone had to keep it by the glass.

Excellent restaurant for a fatter wallet evening. Lovely garden setting in a beautiful historic town. We went for all 3 variations of the classic pork dish, and well they were all great. Look at the meat fest in the pics. Delicious. Service might be considered slow, or could be called relaxingly respectful, hard to say. I had a good evening so let’s leave it at that. Wunderbar!

A magical hidden gem! The perfect spot for a leisurely unforgettable lunch on your way to or from Granada or other points nearby. I first visited with friends in September 2022 on the recommendation of a connoseur friend from Córdoba and was totally smitten. I'd been eager to introduce my group of first time visitors the unequaled joys of a long, slow Spanish lunch. The Palacio del Gallego did not disappoint. Our server guided us through an exquisite series of succulent dishes, mostly local, high quality ingredients expertly prepared over a wood fire. The service was impeccable and the setting sublime. If weather permits, the patio is delightful. In 2023 I led a group of 14 family members to Andalucía for Thanksgiving week. That Tuesday we'd be headed from Granada to Córdoba, so I reached out to make the reservation, only to learn the restaurant closes on Tuesdays. I was so disappointed since it was the perfect spot to celebrate a family Thanksgiving meal even if not on the exact day. Sympathetic to my plight, Manuel the owner agreed to open that day just for us! Can you imagine?!!? Needless to say, we spent an unforgettable afternoon there. I hope to spend many more. I should also add that Baeza is a lovely town and offers the perfect scenic stroll to walk off your sumptious Spanish lunch. Thank you, Manuel and your wonderful crew!

AMAZING PLACE!! I loved absolutely everything about my visit!! The place is absolutely beautiful and feels incredibly peaceful with the fountain in the garden 😍. You can smell the olive tree burning from the street 🤤 we’ve tried the fried aubergine, special iberico ham from the grill and some eggs with ham, prawns and truffle! Everything was special and original 🤩 I would’ve never guessed our first dish was the aubergine by looking at it! The presentation was great! The eggs were fried and mixed with all the other ingredients on the plate at our table by the person serving us. I hope I will be able to come back one day! If you are in Baeza, this is a must and absolutely worth the price. You also get some complimentary olives at the start which might be from the olive tree growing in the garden! Strongly recommend! 😊

Disappointing Experience at an Overhyped restaurant I recently dined at this restaurant, which holds two Michelin stars, and left thoroughly disappointed. Despite clearly requesting our steaks to be cooked well done, they were initially served undercooked. After sending them back, they came out burnt and raw at the same time which means they tuned up the temperature of the grill and didn’t not cook the steaks properly. It was clear the kitchen couldn’t deliver the food to the standard or specifications we expected. To make matters worse, the quality of the food didn’t come close to justifying the sky-high prices. For a restaurant with such a prestigious reputation, the entire experience—from food quality to execution—fell far short. I won’t be returning and cannot recommend it.

A hidden gem with a serene terrace in a beautiful 200 year old palace. The inside bar/restaurant is also lovely with a gorgeous ceiling. We sat under an apple tree and had a delicious meal which was even more special with freshly baked gluten free bread.
