First time going and was very happy! Would highly recommend going! If you a fan of Gavin and Stacey then go!! Also recommend going to chippy on the beach! And you can sit on the beach and enjoy!!

If you're looking for a peaceful start to your day, Barry Island beach is a fantastic spot to catch the sunrise. The golden sands of Whitmore Bay stretch out in a beautiful crescent, and in the quiet morning hours, you'll be treated to a stunning view as the sun rises, casting a warm glow over the water. You can enjoy a tranquil walk along the promenade, which is wide and well-kept. The air is fresh, and the only sounds are the gentle lapping of waves and the calls of the birds. It's the perfect time for a quiet stroll or a moment of reflection before the hustle and bustle of the day begins.

Great place to visit with the family. It is very clean and offers various attractions such as rides, games, or playgrounds. There is even a beach so you can enjoy and relax if the weather is great. Plenty of food options available (Halal food too). Would happily come back.
H S — Google review
One of the most cleanest and looked after beaches I've ever visited. If your a fan of Gavin and Stacey this has the arcade that Nessa worked at. Stacey's house is five minutes away and Pam and Mick's house is ten minute drive away.
Paul C — Google review
Great place if you like fairground rides, crazy golf and arcades. Nice beach, wasn't too crowded. Could remember scenes from Gavin & Stacey, Nessa's slot machines etc. 😊
Chris — Google review
A few good white knuckle rides payed for by tokens, kiddies rides and amusement arcades etc, everything you'd expect basically.

Lovely day! We went to Jackson Bay as we had our dog, and we all had a lovely time. We walked along the beach front; it was very busy and loud. Lots of places to eat and a couple of toilet blocks.

Barry Island is a charming seaside resort known for its clean blue-flag designated waters, vibrant beach huts, and family-friendly attractions. The recently refurbished seafront boasts a sweeping promenade along Whitmore Bay beach, lined with inviting cafes and restaurants. Families can enjoy various amusements such as a climbing wall, mist feature, adventure golf, and landscaped gardens. For thrill-seekers, the Barry Island Pleasure Park offers exciting rides.
This is a beautiful place! The beach is very clean and is an alcohol free zone. Great for families. I didn't come across any dogs on the beach. Life guards are actively on the beach. Views are stunning, cargo ships planes

Barry is great! Tacky tat shops, full of Gavin and Stacy tat, fairground, fish and chips, sandy beach, fairly cheap car park great day out if you want all of the stereotypes of a British beach day out 👌 Dog ban on thr beach until October 1st

I had lovely experience with family as they have amusement park for kids, nice and clean beach. Toilets and food near by to beach. Donuts were really nice. Garden walk on the side of the beach is lovely.

The beach was beautiful and peaceful — perfect for a relaxing day by the sea. What really stood out was the drive from Birmingham; the countryside views along the way were absolutely lovely and made the journey feel like part of the adventure. Highly recommend for families or anyone looking for a calm coastal escape.

This place is great but most of the business don't want to stay here anymore as the beach is not clean so people don't come here. So business not getting customers. Yes those are my sand drawings and my friends. I done that seahorse mostly.

What a cute little seaside town, commercialized of course but full of families having a great time on the fair and on the beautiful beach. Good amenities. . There is a lovely short walk with great views along the peninsula. . A great day out. . . .🌞🍦😎

Beautiful place, absolutely fell in love. Beach isnt dog friendly all year round but found a secluded beach just around the corner that is.
Lynda D — Google review
Great little seaside location. I took my daughter for a 2-day trip. We stayed in the Premier Inn which was only a 10 mins walk to the seafront. Lots of Gavin & Stacey references, obviously - but superb beach & fun in the sea to be had. 3x fish and chip places on the promenade. Lots of arcades for the kids to enjoy. Nearby there is a fairground that has a few rides. Also Friars Point is a lovely short walk to the right of the beach (2nd pic taken from). Great for a 1-2 day trip but we felt we’d seen it all in that time… unless you’re just happy sitting on the beach every day!! I’d come back for a short stay/day trip, for sure! 😎

The recently renovated seafront boasts a sweeping promenade along Whitmore Bay beach, lined with inviting cafes and restaurants, vibrant beach huts, and various amusements for kids. Lovely promenade to stroll along and admire the fantastic ocean view. Plenty of benches to sit along the way, and plenty of cafes and restaurants for refreshments. Limited parking on the sea-front, but plenty of parking further out from the front, although it is a fair walk away.

Barry Island Beach is a great place to spend the day! The sand is soft, the sea is beautiful, and the beach is very clean. There are lots of fun things to do, like playing in the arcades, enjoying the rides, and walking along the promenade. It’s a perfect place for families, friends, or anyone who loves the beach. I will definitely visit again!

A nice beach with a promenade and gelato shops with a funfair just across the road. The best part is a rock cliff just off the sand beach, a gorgeous and quiet place to sit and enjoy the beauty of the ocean away from the crowds.

Lovely beach. It has soft sand and not rocky sand. The view is amazing as well as the fresh breeze. There's many places around it as well like the fair with lots of crazy rides, shops, fish x chips and arcades. And a big car park there.

Muddy beach, with plenty of Gavin and Stacey related shops and cafes. When the tide is out you have quite a walk to get to the water. Lifeguard is usually on duty. Can get busy during holiday period.

Today I visited Marco's Cafe, a charming establishment located at John's cafe. The service provided by the staff was truly remarkable, as the lady attending to us demonstrated exceptional patience and kindness amidst the bustling atmosphere. This cafe is an ideal destination for fans of Gavin and Stacey, offering a delightful ambiance to enjoy a cup of tea or coffee regardless of the weather. The selection of delectable cakes available is quite tempting, while ample undercover seating ensures comfort for patrons.
Marco’s Cafe is a lovely place with great service and a warm, welcoming atmosphere. The staff are very good – friendly, polite, and always happy to help. The food and drinks are fresh and tasty, perfect for a relaxing break near the beach. It’s a great spot to sit, enjoy a coffee, and watch the world go by. Highly recommended for anyone visiting the area!
Forhad T — Google review
Waited 1h for a sorry bacon & cheese baguette after being advised of a 30 min wait. All cheap ingredients and a shoe sole would have been softer than that piece of bacon. Perhaps cooking the bacon was what delayed our order for another 30 minutes? One of our orders wasn’t brought to the table. It might as well just have been sitting in the kitchen until we went to the counter to ask for it.
Claret F — Google review
Had a bacon baguette for breakfast. It was nice (can't tart up a bacon butty, lol) obviously popular with locals judging by the amount of re-usable cups people were using. Overlooking the sea, lots of seating, clean. Prices reasonable 🙂

Cocktail bar
Academy Espresso Bar is housed in a stunning Grade II-listed building, formerly a working pumphouse, located across from Goodsheds. By day, it offers exceptional coffee and food, while at night, patrons can enjoy espresso martinis and non-caffeinated cocktails. The modern bar exudes sophistication with an extensive menu of cocktails and craft beer. Regular food pop-ups and themed street food nights add to the vibrant atmosphere.
Great atmosphere for a coffee and cake stop. All back to normal now (post pandemic), which is nice. Digital ordering from tables has been retained, which can be quite handy, in addition to usual counter service. Great outdoor space; nicely covered so can still sit out in the fresh air when it's raining. Coffee's still really good, and cake selection always a joy. Folks always friendly and live up to their team slogan "Work hard and be nice to people". Dog friendly, and puppuccinos often offered :) Parking system has changed (2024) so no more reg entry on tablet at door. Just keep an eye on time spent; max 3 hours.
Frank H — Google review
The coffee is okay, albeit a mild flavour. The piccolo was made with a double shot and 200ml of milk, which is a flat white, not a piccolo. Any coffee bar should know that: putting academy in the title raises my expectations, which were not met on this occasion.

I held my 50th birthday party at The Underground and would highly recommend! A warm and welcoming venue with helpful staff. The buffet was great too! Thank you for making my celebration a success 🎉
Yasmin L — Google review
Excellent food and drinks. I ordered two Coffees and it took ages for them to be made. It wasn't particularly busy. Otherwise, a great place.
Keith P — Google review
We went for Sunday breakfast and ordered three Academy breakfasts. All had cold beans, cold, not roasted tomato, and a hard poached egg. The sausages were the cheapest available, which is what you would expect from a roadside van. The coffee was fine at best, which is a shame as they have a great coffee machine. Also, as it's ordered via the app, no one checks that everything is ok.
Oliver H — Google review
Great place for a coffee but I definitely don’t recommend the breakfast it was cheap ingredients and bacon was so overcooked, poached eggs have a very strange color to the yolk most probably pre packaged poached eggs and the sausages were very poor quality, I’d have thought for such a small breakfast and at £9.50 each that there would’ve been better quality to it.
Zoe M — Google review
Usually really enjoy visiting but on our last visit the food was very poor and disappointing. Toast was stone cold, about a dessert spoon of beans, undercooked bacon, hard boiled egg and clearly very cheap sausages that tasted awful with a grey tint. The whole breakfast was quite cold so not a good experience this time unfortunately!
Katie — Google review
The place is modern and very good positioned in the city with plenty of parking space. Looks clean and safe and rules for Covid-19 in place. Not too many options to eat just sandwiches and crisps or cookies but all looking fresh. A bit pricey as per location but worth the effort as the atmosphere is pleasant. You serving yourself and that’s reduce the contract with too many people. Recommend the experience.

Fish & chips restaurant
O'Shea's Fish & Chip Cafe is a delightful spot to enjoy classic British fare, especially after a day at the beach. Visitors rave about the generous portions of freshly cooked fish and perfectly fluffy chips, often served with a side of hot mushy peas or curry sauce that many claim is exceptional. The atmosphere can be lively, reflecting the diverse mix of patrons enjoying their meals. On sunny days, it’s an ideal place to savor delicious food while soaking in the stunning seaside views.
The best Fish and chips me and my family have ever tasted!!! Definitely recommend and can't wait to bring my family back for this delicious food again!! Staff very friendly and polite. 5++☆
Marcella D — Google review
Enjoyed the cod and chips, the pie I believe was Peter's Pies but didn't check, it was tasty and I like this as usually most places serve pukka pies. We did find quite a few bones in the cod and also what seemed like something from a scouring pad in the chips, likely where cleaning had taken place and the pad getting caught. Didn't mention this as by the time we were eating there were more customers. Over good was cooked fresh and kids enjoyed the fish and chips.
J C — Google review
Amazing visit today. Great cod pieces and chips. £9 for the cod pieces and chips and it was massive! Deffo pop by if your on the island!
Benjamin M — Google review
Decent chunks of cod. Healthy portions of chips. Proper chips from King Edwards potatoes, I believe. Everything was hot and fresh. Reasonable prices (£12 for large cod and chips). Fast efficient, and pleasant, service, when the place was heaving with customers. I took the food out to the beach to eat. It could use more seating during the surge hours, perhaps. Honestly, O'Shea's is a great, proper fish 'n chip place.
Jeffrey C — Google review
Really fresh fish and chips. Lovely staff. Self service tills were good.
Jack B — Google review
The food was okay, service was great, very open type restaurant. It does the job for quick food.
Srijan K — Google review
During my recent visit, I was pleased to find that the chips were well-cooked and enjoyable, and I also appreciated that the shop offers proper meat sausages in batter, which is a refreshing change compared to many places. However, there were a number of concerns that unfortunately impacted the overall experience. Firstly, the curry sauce served was watery and cold, which made it unappetising. In addition, while the sausage itself was good quality, the batter was excessively greasy and difficult to enjoy. A much more concerning issue was related to food handling. I observed a young server taking a sausage from another customer’s tray—after the food had already been served to them—and placing it back into the serving oven, before replacing it with a battered sausage instead. This raised significant hygiene concerns, as once food has left the serving counter, it should not be returned to the hot hold or offered to other customers under any circumstances. Finally, I noted that there are very few tables available for customers wishing to dine in, which makes it difficult for people to comfortably enjoy their meal on the premises. While I did find some positives, I feel these issues—particularly the hygiene practice observed—should be addressed urgently to maintain food safety and improve the overall dining experience.
Steffan M — Google review
Had a meal here with my family. The new touchscreen is hard to navigate. The pie looked like it had been chucked in the takeout box and the top was hard and couldn't eat it the bottom was fine. Chips nice and sausages the family had were good. Tables were not kept on top of cleaning we cleaned our own table as best we could. We always come here when visiting but yesterday was disappointing.

Whitmore+Jackson Cake Makers & Decorations is a popular spot near Barry, South Glamorgan. Visitors have praised the delicious lemon cake and the comfortable atmosphere for families, with separate baby changing facilities and options for children like babycinos and hot chocolate. The food has received mixed reviews, with some praising the excellent sourdough and bacon while others found certain items passable. However, many appreciate the quick service and overall beautiful setup of the place.
The food was excellent. The only downside was there was very limited vegan food options although alternative milks were readily available. Great atmosphere and very friendly staff
N P — Google review
Recently we went here on a day trip to Barry Island. We planned to have breakfast and had looked into our options beforehand online. Initially we were going to go to John's cafe next door, but after comparing the menus on both shop fronts, for just a small amount more Whitfield and Jackson proclaimed to have far better quality ingredients and a slice of black pudding too. This was enough to change our direction. Very cozy inside, outdoor seating too, however I like to eat a breakfast indoors to keep it warm that bit longer. The food did not disappoint, absolutely delicious, very good quality produce, cooked to perfection and a fair price. Sourdough bread was delightful, the sausages and bacon were butcher quality as promised, To be honest we had nothing to fault. We we had no doubt that coming here was the correct choice. Washed it down with a cold can of Coca-Cola and away we went. I do think the staff could have been a little more "service with a smile", they didn't offer much interaction besides taking our order and handing us plates. Besides that a thoroughly good experience and I'd certainly make the journey here again if I find myself over that way again in the future.

Had a gluten free breakfast (minus eggs and mushrooms as I don't like them) plus a black coffee. Lovely atmosphere, tasty food with proper butchers sausages. Very nice and right by the beach. Would definitely pop in again.

We had a really good experience here. The staff were very helpful as one of our party had food allergies and the staff explained what food she could eat. We were seated straight away and ordered our food and the food came out quickly and was delicious and very good value for money. Would highly recommend and there were seated areas that you could take dogs.

We visited yesterday and I had the poached eggs on sourdough bread. I have to say these poached eggs were the best I have ever tasted in my life. They were cooked to absolute perfection. The yolks were perfect, just the right consistency and totally delicious. I'm not a great fan of the white preferring the yolk, but these whites were delicious too. The addition of the sourdough bread as opposed to ordinary bread added to the taste also. I don't know how your chef made this simple meal so exquisite, but please pass on my compliments to him/her. My husband enjoyed his omelette too. Will be back!

Stunning place 😍 we both had breakfasts and an omelette. The ham in the omelette was "real" ham and the mushrooms in it were lush too. Our breakfast ingredients were high quality and having a half tomato just shows that this place is quality 👌 the toast was absolutely stunning with real butter 😋😋 It's our first time eating here, we will definitely be back. Our dog was welcome too which was a big bonus. Even though it was very busy due to the festival of transport, our food came out quick and was served by a lovely member of staff 😀 all.the staff were friendly despite being run off their feet. Thank you all ❤️

Family restaurant
Barry Island Brewers Fayre is a laid-back family pub and restaurant chain offering classic dishes and international favorites. They are known for their excellent value for money, with options like a hot buffet breakfast featuring great sausages, eggs, cereals, yogurts, pastries, and more. The Head Chef recommends the classic Smothered Chicken or mouth-watering Mixed Grill as popular menu choices.
Have been here a couple of times, Carl and the staff are the most polite in Cardiff and food is good, especially for the price. We will definitely be returning many times. One thing that would make the experience better would be if some rude families were asked to contain their children and behave with some fundamental decency, as last time we visited the family next to us had their kids running around in their socks and crawling on the floor, which is not appropriate for a restaurant.

A Saturday evening with a family of 6. The service to order at the bar was quick and staff where friendly. Although it was busy, 40 minutes from order to service was somewhat unusual for this restaurant as normally they are quick for service. The food was warm, pleasant and the staff were very friendly.

Well we visited here a few times whilst staying at the premier inn Barry island next door. Food is lovely and very reasonablly priced. Before 6pm daily meals are £6 and deserts £2.99 each, bargain, as a wheelchair user this place is level access and there is plenty of space to turn around inside. Although this place can get busy service is brilliant. Bookings for tables may be reccomended here.

Me and my mother were staying in the Premier Inn next door for my 25th birthday. We had booked in for a meal deal with the Premier Inn which we found to be of incredibly good value. It included breakfast, a 2 course evening meal and a drink for an incredibly good price. Almost all of the regular menu was available in this deal. During the evening meal, the manager Carl and his team gave us incredibly good service and was very friendly. They did everything they could to make my birthday feel special. The food was prepared timely and of excellent quality. I would particularly recommend trying their steak since it was cooked to perfection. For breakfast the next morning, there was a wide array of choices. Once again, the food was of excellent quality. I would highly recommend visiting this place if you're in Barry Island. Especially if you're staying with the Premier Inn and you are offered the meal deal with your stay

Well as Brewers Fayre’s go this one was a delight . We were staying in the Premier Inn next door and popped in for lunch - it was fairly busy but with a £5 lunch offer I’m not surprised. We ordered the gammon and fish and chips - expecting to receive a smaller portion for that price. The food arrived and it was a more than plentiful portion - set us up for the day! Service was good - take a table then order at the bar .

Great food and service.. staff were super friendly and efficient. We both plumped for the rump steak which was delicious and cooked to perfection for us.. 👌 I went for the caramel brown Betty with custard which was amazing 😋 my wife chose the banoffee cheesecake which was a generous portion and delicious.. Very enjoyable and good value

It’s what you would expect from brewers fayre food wise. Perfect for a value for money meal with your family. The service was excellent- I forgot to order my son’s pizza and Carl sorted it for me immediately and it was out within 10mins! He also made sure my friend who is gluten free was catered for well. Lovely experience and start to our break in Barry

Cafe
Nestled along the picturesque Barry Island seafront, John's Cafe is a charming spot that exceeds expectations in both quality and value. This modest eatery serves up hearty meals, including a generous steak and ale pie accompanied by perfectly cooked chips and peas, all served hot on a plate. Breakfast lovers will delight in their traditional offerings featuring flawlessly cooked eggs, crispy bacon, and substantial doorstop toast slathered with rich Welsh butter.
Amazing breakfast and coffees (including gluten free options). I am coeliac and had beans and cheese on gluten free toast and an iced latte. My partner was able to have an oat milk iced latte (he’s lactose intolerant). The food is great value for money and the staff are super friendly! Thanks!

It's the best kind of cafe: Excellent food (much is homemade) served hot and fast. Very good value for money, and friendly staff. I had what certainly looked and tasted like homemade steak and ale pie, with chips and peas, and my own big thermos jug of proper tasty gravy. Wonderful. Girlfriend had sausage, egg, and chips. Sausages were very nice, eggs perfectly cooked. Chips hot and crisp. Stepson just pinched some of ours. But it makes up the fourth generation to enjoy eating here. Will definitely be back 😁

Modest café situated right on Barry Island seafront. I wasn't expecting much in the way of either quality or value. However I was very pleasantly surprised when my lunch arrived, to receive a generous slice of steak and ale pie which was absolutely packed with filling, a decent pile of nicely-cooked chips and peas, all served piping hot on a hot plate, just as it should be! It was also very nice that the gravy came separately in a jug with a lid, to keep the contents hot... brilliant! The staff were clearly working hard during lunch service and yet still managed a smile and to exchange pleasantries. I'll definitely be back, next time I'm in town. Thank you and keep up the great work!

Overpriced if you want just a sandwich £12.50. Tried to just order 1 scone to share and was told its cheaper to have 2. In this day and age do we need to be overfed. A coffee and scone is well and truly enough to eat in my opinion. Coffee (flat white just a milky coffee) nothing brilliant. Don't appreciate 40 questions when all I want is a snack. Enough said.

The new King of Barry Breakfast is here. Well I only just found out about it lol 🤣 fantastic massive and meaty for £8.80 but you could split it in 2! Needs better sausages for the price and WiFi other than that the breakfast was amazing!

For day 2, we recommend exploring the north side side of town. Start the day off with Victoria Park, then wind down and take it easy by the time you get to Hang Fire Southern Kitchen. All together, your day would be filled with about 7 hours of non-stop fun.

Victoria Park is a charming Victorian park located in Cardiff, offering a variety of attractions for visitors. The park features well-maintained lawns, beautiful flower borders, and a picturesque bandstand. Families can enjoy the large adventure playground equipped with swings, climbing frames, slides, and bouncers for children to have endless fun. During the summer months, there is also a spacious paddling pool available. Additionally, the park provides ample space for activities such as biking and ball games.
Great little park to walk around. We love coming here to walk our dog. It’s never too crowded and has lovely flowers to look at whilst walking around. The ice cream kiosk here is amazing, too. The best ice cream I’ve ever had and has fast become my favourite part of coming to this park!

Victoria Park is a lovely and peaceful place to spend time, and we really enjoyed our visit here. It’s one of the nicest parks in Cardiff, perfect for relaxing, walking, or spending time with family and friends. The park is clean, well-maintained, and full of natural beauty. There are lots of open green spaces, colourful flowers, and tall trees that make the whole area feel calm and fresh. One of the best things about Victoria Park is how family-friendly it is. There’s a great playground for children, with safe and fun equipment. During warmer days, the splash pad area is a big hit with kids, and it’s free to use. You can see families having picnics, children playing, and people enjoying the sunshine. There are also plenty of benches and shady spots if you just want to sit and relax. The walking paths are smooth and easy, perfect for a quiet stroll or a jog. There’s also a small café inside the park where you can grab a coffee, ice cream, or snacks. It’s a nice touch that makes the visit even more enjoyable. Overall, Victoria Park is a peaceful escape in the middle of the city. We had a lovely time and will definitely come back again soon!

What a lovely facility. The park and water park kept the grandchildren entertained for 4 hrs - the gardens were well maintained and looked great in the sun shine ! Not good to have the money grabbing kids fair rides in there ! It really spoiled the look and feel of this wonderful/beautiful park !!
James P — Google review
Lovely park within easy reach of public transport and fairly easy to park near. There are multiple well designed and segregated, but positioned adjacent, play areas allowing children to use age appropriate frames and rides whilst allowing clear sight lines for parents to monitor this free play. The splash pad, built into the old paddling pool, offers children excitement and refreshingly welcome cool down opportunities within a safely confined area. The sensory features and easy access make this a really well designed inclusive area of the park. Tennis courts, enclosed 5 a side pitch are available and the beach volleyball club at the residential end of the park makes really good use of the old bowls club whilst still maintaining community access and engagement. During the summer there are broadcasted competitions and in the office season teams train there and provide coaching to young beach volleyball wannabees. A recent addition of the customer made work out frame gives people the chance to perform many work outs (pull ups, dips, sit ups) to develop their strength and attached QR codes give access to coaching via an app/website. There is plenty of space across most of the park for picnics and leisurely strolling with the added benefit of the renovated toilets (as with other parks) creating a cafe near the main entrance for year round use and the snack bar 'Mammas Place' in the centre, which is reasonable prices compared to other venues in the cities parks. During holiday periods there are often additional paid for rides to cater for the staycationers with kids and seasonal entertainment on the bandstand. Lovely place with a beautiful flowery entrance area.

This park has something for everyone! Great for cycling and rollerblading on the wide paths. There are outdoor fitness equipment stations, tennis courts, and even a small cafe. It's the heart of the community—always buzzing with life, yet you can always find a quiet corner. Love it here!

I love this park I've been coming to it for nearly sixy years on and off. It's easily asseccable for disabled (people like myself) on their mobility scooters as well. Unlike lots of paths and parks in Cardiff. I have to travel from Ely to this wonderful park to enjoy access to an outdoor area, as I'm unable to get into any others in the Ely or Drope areas due to those ridiculous access things they have in so many parks and on so many paths throughout Cardiff City area. Given they have claimed to be a Disable Friendly City (Big Joke). Disabled access is not good at all for those of us on mobility scooters. Given Disabled people's mental heath issues, and access to outdoor places, I'm absolutely amazed by the outdoor areas that I'm excluded from accessing because of the stupid gates and narrowing entry points they have put up to stop bikes using them but fit people just lift them over and in they go but not me though!!! 😀 yes, it's a joke, as are the Cardiff City Council & there open access to outdoor areas. But Victoria Park is one of the Amazing open Spaces that I can access along with Bute park, Pontcanna Park the Taff Trail and Roath Parks which

Romilly Park in Barry is a popular spot known for hosting the GlastonBarry tribute band festival. The park offers a spacious area for kids to play, although the play area could use some improvement. Visitors can enjoy refreshments at the recently opened cafe, which offers affordable and fresh food and drinks. The park is home to various bird species and features a waterway, lake, and breakwater leading to the sea.
What a beautiful place indeed. This was the first time I have been there and it did not disappoint at all. Had a lovely walk around the grounds and lake. The lake was full of swans, ducks and other birds.....must have been a hundred 😊

A lovely spacious park, ideal to let the little ones run around. They could do with improving the children's play area. There is a lovely cafe that has recently opened, and it is a wonderful place for a quick snack and a tea 🍵 or coffee ☕️ on the go. The cafe is very inexpensive and the food and drinks are fresh. They open around 9.30 am and close, depending on the weather, at around 5 pm. The gentleman that served us today is a real gentleman, known to many locals as Mr P or Pykie. He is very helpful and always telling jokes, a very happy go lucky person. Well, it's worth a visit.

Knap Gardens, located in Barry Island, is a picturesque spot for a leisurely stroll or a relaxing picnic. The gardens feature beautiful landscapes and a serene lake where swans and ducks gracefully glide along the water. Visitors can also explore the Pebble Beach and enjoy stunning views of the Bristol Channel. While there are occasional issues with bird droppings, Knap Gardens offers a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.
Nice area to take a stroll, bring your furry friend 🐶 too as it’s got plenty of space for them to roam and explore. Beautiful scenery on the coastline, lots of lovely cafes on the way in.

Lovely place to visit, the weather was great on the day and we all enjoyed it. We were able to walk to Watch Tower Bay and back through Knap Gardens before the tide came in. It was a lovely place to have a picnic and take pictures, the Pebble Beach on the other side of the walkway was just fantastic and the scenery quite exquisite. I wish I could have experienced sunset, I can only imagine how beautiful it would look. There's always a next time I guess, one thing I remember noticing was the air.was so crisp and clean and it was really relaxing and refreshing. I would highly recommend a visit if you are in the area, it is well worth the time. Parking might be a bit of an issue but we got there a bit early and were able to park quite close. Don't be put off though as there are still some side roads within walking distance that have no parking restrictions.

Goodsheds is a trendy urban development located on an old dockyard, featuring a collection of independent shops housed in repurposed shipping containers known as the Shipyard. Visitors can explore a variety of boutiques offering craft beers, records, home furnishings, and fashion. The site also boasts numerous dining options with indoor and outdoor seating areas. Guests can enjoy diverse food choices from different restaurants within the complex.
A great innervation. Lots of independent shops reasonably priced a fantastic dinning area, a group of different eateries working together. Find a table and scan the code order from any of the establishments, and it is brought to the table. We ordered from 5 different places and all arrived within 5 minutes of each other.

Interesting place with food court and local businesses. Once the building works next door has finished it’ll also be less noisy, hopefully. We came here to try out a dessert place that turned out to be closed that day which was a huge disappointment. We ended up having something else sweet so all good in the end.

📍 Paint & Sip, Goodsheds Last weekend we went along to a fabulous paint & sip session run by @tipsykahlo at Goodsheds in Barry. After a welcome cocktail, we got painting. We did the Halloween themed session and so tried, emphasis on TRIED, to paint pumpkins and a cute ghost in a field. This was such a fun activity, neither of us are particularly artsy as you can see but the fun was in trying. A cocktail and materials are provided and you can take your masterpiece home. I’ll stick to physics but this was brilliant. and definitely recommended. Thanks for having us! [INVITE] Full review on socials (@thefemalephysicist)

It's alright. I like the business idea. Each kitchen doesn't really have many options for food mind. Service is great but you have to dispose of your own waste yet tipping/service charge feels very enforced. Whenever we go tables are sticky and other people's waste is left on them. Last time there was no water either. Generally the atmosphere is alright, it's our doors so unless you are near a rowdy table the sound disapates quite well compared to indoor venues. Having said that I normally have to bring a jumper and know some people wear hats and coats to keep warm, there are some heaters but not every table get the benefit of those. I should add it's all sheltered from the rain. I do like the assortment of food available just wish there were more options. Prices seems reasonable too.

We like the Goodsheds idea and have visited a number of times for various reasons. We went last Friday, early evening to get some food after a swim. Ut wasnt super busy, 2-3 tables with customers. We sat down to order. Tables were sticky and not cleaned, we asked and someone came to sort it out.. The food was good but the music was unbearable! Not adequate to time and place, and very loud, more suitable for a rave to be honest. We felt really uncomfortable. Its also a pity that you only have some plastic plants displayed there. It’s an ideal place to showcase some real plants and make the place feel a little bit more cared for and alive. We’ll wait a bit until our next visit.

A great gem in Barry. Goodsheds offers a wide variety of delicious food, easily ordered via phone. There are also smaller retail units, all placed in quirky surroundings (including an old train), and it's a perfect location for a hangout with friends.

Service was quick, food was lovely. A few choices but a bigger variety would have been nice like Newport market. Ordered from 3 different places and no cutlery was given.

Having been to Goodsheds before when it first opened we decided to today for lunch. Not at all busy. Tables only just clean. Food was diabolical. Rwcola advertised foccacia garlic bread, but we were served garlic pizza. When we sent it back it was returned to us stating it was the foccacia garlic bread ... just made with pizza dough! That is NOT what we expected when advertised as a totally different bread style. AND it was burnt. They advertised option to add cheese ....no such thing existed on the app. We also ordered a curry from AG Indian.....they offered option to have half rice and half chips ....again not able to do on the app........ not even a nice curry! Very expensive for what was ordered! Exceptionally poor quality food. Would NOT recommend. We will definitely NOT be returning. So very dissapointed.

Hang Fire Southern Kitchen in Barry is a must-visit for meat lovers. Whether you choose the ribs, brisket, pulled pork, or fried chicken, you're in for a treat. The atmosphere is welcoming and the service exceptional. The spare ribs are particularly recommended as they are incredibly tender. Despite being a meat-focused eatery, the place doesn't leave you smelling like smoke afterward.
Came here for lunch off the back of amazing reviews. Absolutely womderful experience. Extremely welcoming staff and a lovely restaurant. Food was delightful! Some of the best slow cooked meats I have ever had in the UK. Book ahead, restaurant has a long waiting list. Will definitely be returning for an evening meal.

Didn't disappoint! I've tried the pop up stall a few times at food festivals etc and I admit I did wonder if the novelty of it all would be a little lost in a permanent premises but boy was I wrong! Food is as impeccable as it has always been and the welcome is twice as warm. Plus I really noticed that unlike many other meat related establishments I didn't leave there smelling like a smoked burger myself - impressive. Menu is meaty as you would expect although there is a token vegetarian choice on the dinner menu that my wife ordered and it looked so delicious I almost wished I'd ordered it myself....almost ☺ I personally can recommend the brisket and burnt ends....delicious. So in short I thoroughly enjoyed my food experience here, the location is perfect and I really hope they continue to flourish.

Very tricky this one. We really wanted to give this 5 but after much deliberation we decided on 4. It was expensive!! The service was good and very friendly with a nice atmosphere, especially on a friday lunchtime (half term). The food was good. The brisket on bread was a little dry and it felt as if the bread was included to fill up the plate. The pork was delicious....but it was pricey. Nice touch with local suppliers being used and meat from sustainable sources.

Great independant meat & southern American BBQ food restaurant, that's won awards & still run hands on by original two owners, who've appeared on TV & have their own cook book. Note there's often a 3 month wait list for booking tables (& they will therefore likely require a deposit) although it is possible to get walk-in tables sometimes at less busy periods. Just don't expect that even on a week day evening! The food is all freshly prepared from scratch on site & owners & waitress staff are very friendly and knowledgeable. Really adding to the relaxed & friendly atmosphere of the place.

The starters are incredible here so make sure you go for the dinner menu as lunch menu doesn't do starters. Great selection of cocktails and you won't find a better barbecue joint in Wales. The ribs and chicken wings are essential to try but for a good all rounder, try the Pit Boss on your first visit. Also the staff are lovely.

We only had one week in Cardiff, otherwise we'd have visited this place far more often. The atmosphere was great, the service exceptionally good (the owner greets you at the door in a way that makes you feel special and extremely welcome). The food is just too die for. Have the spare ribs! They literally fall off the bone. I eat very little carbohydrates, so dessert was not an option for me. I ordered the Korean chicken wings instead. That is what they must eat in heaven, I'm sure. Everything is first class. The salads, the meat, starters, sweets, everything! This place will see me again, the next time I'm in Cardiff.

Where do I even start. This is the best barbecue restaurant in the UK, I rarely give 5* but I would give this one 6* if I could. Let's go: for starters we had Buffalo chicken wings, Kansas chicken wings and fried pickles. The wings are cooked perfectly, you can taste the smokiness on the second and third bite which shows that they have been smoked for a long time just as the menu says (3h smoking) they are tender and jucy and full of flavour, the sauce is just the finishing touch. The fried pickles are thick and tasty. Mains: had to have almost everything on the menu so we had brisket, pulled pork, ribbs and sausage. The brisket is tender and full of flavours, the pulled pork melts in your mouth and works great with the house sauce you can pick from the table. The ribs were cooked perfect and the spices and smokiness made them delicious. The sausages were meety and full of flavour, what a treat. Oh and the sides, brisket pit beans and pastramy hash, the beans are just delicious, the meat was so so good and tender, the pastramy hash was different than what I was expecting but in the best way possible, couldn't fault a thing. Let's not leave out the drinks, hangfire cherry cola a nice refreshing mix, hurricane amaretto sour a well made rum mix and an old fashioned strong and just right. The atmosphere is great, not a big place, intimate, friendly, welcoming. The staff was nice and casual, attentive but not overly, helpful but not over the top, just right. Needles to say I was impressed and already booked my next meal in February, yes its almost full booked by then, IT'S THAT GOOD. Oh... The prices are very good for the quality. Enjoy the pictures

The Little Olive is an authentic Italian restaurant known for its fresh pasta, homemade pizza, and a variety of mains and antipasti. The place is popular for catering to special dietary needs like gluten-free and dairy-free diets. It's a quaint, family-owned restaurant perfect for a dinner date or casual dining experience. While it may be challenging to secure a table due to its increasing popularity, the comforting food and charming ambiance make it worth the wait.
Great cozy atmosphere and friendly faces on the staff. The food was great and would make the Italians proud. The lasagne especially stood out as rich and Herby. The prawn Gambia starter was beautiful. Overall a great little hidden gem so don't let the 1 or 2 bad reviews put you off. We came here for a meal here last night after a recommendation from a friend. The atmosphere was great, friendly team running the place, the only thing I would mention is that service could have been better, we had about 4 empty glasses and a jug at the end of the table for most of the sitting which made it a bit crowded/cramped at my end of the table as I moved them all there to make it easier for them to be collected. We ordered more drinks half way through the meal & they were still left there when the new ones were delivered. My calamari was quite chewy & the portion was small but the side salad that came with it filled the gap. The garlic mushrooms were ok, a bit juicy for my partners liking. The mains were great, decent portions and very tasty indeed. I Would definitely recommend coming here for the Amatriciana!

No worries i left my ego and i said let me enjoy im already here and i ordered my food on the table a bill of £60 and i had lamp chops omg he was like chewing gum really hard . And the service one of the boys he is in a rush to take your order and barely speak to u like u own him something . I will never come again, i left with disappointment tbh .

Very friendly staff, great service. Lovely atmosphere - perfect for any occasion. We ordered hot starters: sucuk (grilled spicy Turkish beef sausage) with hummus and lettuce, falafel with hummus and lettuce - both extremely delicious and flavoursome. Mixed grill ( included a selection of meats; lamb and chicken cubes, lamb kofte, chicken kofte, chicken wings, lamb chop) served with rice and a delicious salad. We couldn’t leave without trying a dessert, we ordered the baklava - 10/10!! Tasted freshly made. I have visited twice, and I am already looking for an excuse to visit again!

This place is wonderful, the service is very good and the atmosphere is great. The restaurant is busy and you do need to book in advance. There are plenty of choices on the menu and very reasonable prices. Food was very tasty and excellent quality and beautifully presented, taste was excellent. Well, it's worth a visit, and we will go back again. Well, we did go back again and had a wonderful meal and great atmosphere. They have built a new conservatory, which is fabulous. The food was again beautifully cooked and very well presented, the staff were very helpful and friendly. What a team, Mehmet runs a wonderful restaurant with a great team around him. Every time we have been there, the food and the service are wonderful, and it is always a pleasure to eat here. Another great evening eating at Usta. Fabulous 👌

My wife and I had an absolutely lovely meal at Usta Turkish Restaurant. From start to finish, the food, wine, and service were all great. We began with the mixed platter starter, which was excellent and a perfect way to try a variety of their delicious appetizers. For our mains, my wife had the chicken shish kebab, which was perfectly cooked and full of flavour. I had a lamb dish, lamb mince wrapped in bread with sauce and yoghurt. It was very nice. The house Tribbiano wine we shared was also excellent. The staff were great—very friendly and attentive throughout our visit. The restaurant's location is also a big plus, making it a great spot for a night out. We highly recommend Usta Turkish Restaurant and can't wait to go back.

Went for my sis 50th Birthday 🎂 Food was amazing 👌 great atmosphere service was great by staff but the wait for the food was very long 50mins long!!!!! considering it was pre-ordered! It was boiling in the restaurant and very full but it was a Friday evening! The kind waiter brought me over an air con tower of which I was very very grateful! I would definitely recommend the Usta as food was really tasty 😋

Indian restaurant
Indian grocery store
Nestled in the vibrant Riverside area, Madhav is a beloved vegetarian restaurant that has captured the hearts of locals and visitors alike. This charming eatery, conveniently located next to a world foods supermarket, offers a delightful escape from the bustling city life. Known for its authentic Indian cuisine, Madhav serves up mouthwatering dosas—crispy rice pancakes filled with spiced potatoes—and thalis that showcase an array of flavors.
Love this place. Everything is prepared fresh! It has gone up in price a bit but still on the cheaper side especially given the quality! It is also nice to have the shop nextdoor connected into the restaurant. The samosas absolutely melt in the mouth and the dosa is very well filled. Restaurant is closed for a break from 3-5pm
Ella M — Google review
Fantastic value, friendly and welcoming staff, good selection of Indian food made authentically with love and care. I ordered the Maruti Thali special, onion bhaji and Mango Lassi. The mango lassi was thick, creamy in texture and the perfect level of sweetness. The bhaji was a little overcooked and stodgy, but had a nice flavour. The thali had the largest range of elements I've ever seen in a thali with each one tasting unique and complimenting each other. Both curries were rich in their depth of flavour and were bursting with flavour. Overall a lovely experience and I would definitely go again.

My favourite place to eat! Deliciously authentic veg Indian food, service and atmosphere, I seek Maruti's out every time I'm passing through Cardiff. Highly recommend a thali or dosa, and the Dal Kachouri are the best I've ever tasted

This place has been around since my childhood, so popping in is always nostalgic for me (although there have been significant changes over the years). The atmosphere is calming. Shop in peace to a variety of spices and wholefood options. Reasonable prices so can't fault it. The loveliest part is being able to dine in for some Indian style street food. Food is freshly made and superb. Hope the business keeps going and going....and the owners reap the rewards for good customer service!

What an amazing place with beautiful home cooked food! Definitely worth going to, the food doesn't repeat, give heart burn when drinking alcohol and actually tastes so so nice. And we paid less than £30 for a heap of tasting food. Will never go to an Indian restaurant again that charges extortionate amount of money and leaves you feeling very oily!

A very nice spot. Genuine and authentic homecooked indian food. An open kitchen run by a kind lady. Generous portion sizes, great taste and super cheap. Will definitely come back

Located in central Cardiff, The Potted Pig offers a unique dining experience in former bank vaults. The restaurant serves modern British cuisine with French and New York influences, constantly evolving its menu to create carefully crafted dishes.
Absolutely fantastic. This is my third time visiting, once for evening meal and twice for roast, this time we tried the sharing roast with lamb, pork and beef. The lamb fell apart, the pork was tender and the beef was just the right amount of pink. Crisp potatoes, perfectly cooked veg, love that it includes cauliflower cheese as most places this is an additional side you have to pay extra for! We got there early so got to enjoy the calm moments before it got busy. Such a beautiful venue, wonderful attentive staff, and probably one of the best roasts iv had. A firm favourite that I will always return to when I visit Cardiff for a weekend.

Deliciouus! And the atmosphere is also very nice - very elegant decorations. I loved the small pig details. 😜 But I found it to be a bit too cold. The staff was very friendly and helpful.

Great experience last night. The staff was friendly and engaging while the manager was amazing at helping to find the right wine to go with our mains. We ordered from the specials menu and the regular menu and were not disappointed. Great flavour with good sized portions. We weren’t rushed at all and had a lovely time. Thank you for a lovely night! Try the sticky toffee pudding!!

What a gem! My wife and I enjoyed the signature starter, potted pig, Ox Cheek Tagliatelle and Tender Lamb Shoulder with a nice Spanish Rioja. The manager sat us in a romantic corner and made us feel special by stopping at our table several times to check on us.

Nice and warm welcome. Nice and almost relaxing atmosphere. Food was really great. Michelin "recognized" with a plaque outside for a reason. Great value for money and truly recommendable.

The mains were not great. My wife's ravioli was barely warm and had to send it back to heat it up but didn't come back much better. My monkfish and cod linguine was also not hot enough and I was hunting for the cod so didn't think it was worth the price. My burrata starter was good but my wife found her terrine starter dry. Overall we were disappointed.

Day 3

Proximity is everything
For day 3, we bundled attractions like Cold Knap beach and Mr Villa's Fish & Chip Restaurant & Oyster Bar and other places within a close range, so that the time it takes to travel between all of them is less than one hour. Combined with the average time people spend there, your day should take about 6 hours.

Cold Knap beach

Public beach
Cold Knap beach in Barry is a small pebbly cove that transforms into a long stretch of pebble beach when the tide is out. It's a quiet and relaxed space, perfect for activities like fishing and windsurfing. The promenade offers an enjoyable stroll, suitable for wheelchairs, buggies, and scooters.
The Cold Knap is a very appropriate name for this area because it was cold (March) but that was down to the constant wind that the area generates and even in the hotter months i find this place cooler as a result compared to other surrounding areas. The place itself has a large pebbled beach stretching for some distance especially when the tide is out. It also has free parking which is a big bonus and it has toilets too which are not the cleanest but certainly not the dirtiest i have visited either but when you're busting to relieve yourself, then who really cares. It's also a great place to walk your dogs all year round.
A M — Google review
Cold Knap Beach is a peaceful and scenic spot, perfect for those looking to escape the busy city and enjoy some fresh sea air. Located just a short walk from Barry Island, it offers a much quieter and more relaxed atmosphere, making it ideal for couples, families, or anyone who enjoys nature and the outdoors. The beach itself is mostly pebbles with some sandy areas, especially when the tide is out. It’s clean and well looked after, and the view of the sea and coastline is beautiful. On a clear day, you can see across the Bristol Channel, and the sound of the waves adds to the calming experience. There’s a lovely path along the seafront which is perfect for walking, jogging, or cycling. Benches are available for people who want to sit and enjoy the view, and there’s a large green area nearby where children can play or families can have a picnic. Parking is usually easy to find and free, which is a big bonus. If you’re looking for a quiet place to relax, watch the sunset, or enjoy a peaceful walk by the sea, Cold Knap Beach is a fantastic choice. We really enjoyed our time there and will definitely return.
Forhad T — Google review
Cold Knap Beach is a beautiful spot – peaceful, clean, and full of charm. The pebbles give it a unique character, and it’s ideal for a walk, picnic, or simply relaxing by the water. With a lovely park right next to the beach, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. It never feels overcrowded, making it a calm and refreshing place to visit, with stunning views across the coastline. There’s plenty of space for families, and it’s also the perfect spot to watch the sunset. Truly a hidden gem in Barry!
Hansanie E — Google review
Lovely pebbly beach. Hard to get to the sea. No coffee truck available the day we visited but toilets open. Lake area feels a bit run down but nice row of little shops and cafes nearby.
Katherine H — Google review
I’ve always found Cold Knap Beach to be one of those places that feels different every time you visit. The first thing you notice is that it isn’t your typical sandy beach, it’s all pebbles, and when the waves roll in, they make this soothing clattering sound that you can’t quite hear anywhere else. It’s oddly calming, almost meditative, just standing there listening. For me, it’s more of a walking and thinking beach than a sunbathing one. On clear days, the views stretch out beautifully across the water, and on colder, windier days it feels rugged and wild, the kind of place where you pull your coat tighter but still don’t want to leave. I like wandering along the promenade, especially in the evening when it’s quieter. The lake and green area just behind the beach are lovely too, perfect if you want to sit and relax or have a picnic. It never feels overcrowded, which makes it a nice escape compared to some of the busier spots in Barry. Cold Knap might not have the golden sand postcard look, but that’s part of its charm. It’s peaceful, authentic, and has this understated beauty that keeps drawing me back.

If you're on the hunt for a delightful seafood experience, look no further than Mr Villa's Fish & Chip Restaurant & Oyster Bar. Nestled in the charming seaside town of Barry, this eatery perfectly captures the coastal vibe with its inviting atmosphere and stunning views of Knap Gardens. The menu is a treasure trove of delectable options, featuring everything from flavorful fish soup to succulent king prawns bathed in garlic butter, alongside exquisite dishes like roast hake with beurre blanc and enticing seafood platters.
We had an amazing time at Mr Villa’s, the staff were extremely on top of everything and obliging to our every need. The food was exquisite and I would highly recommend the crusted cod to both seafood and non seafood eaters as it is amazing. We travelled a long way from Australia to enjoy the Uk seafood here and were not disappointed. Definite 5 stars.

Great seaside restaurant with super fresh seafood! Every dish was tasty, especially the seafood pasta and grilled fish. No oysters that day as the owner only serves them when they’re top quality – very professional. Clean place, lovely atmosphere, friendly staff, and pet-friendly too. Highly recommended!

The fish and chips here was absolutely banging! Was £12 for cod and chips which I thought was a little bit in the steep side as the cod portion was quite small. They don't do curry sauce or gravy which was disappointing but to be fair the food we had was lovely. Ended up having mushy peas, tasted peppery very nice. Chips were fresh and super crispy. The cod was cooked perfectly aswell. Was nice to pick up food close to the knap and enjoy it on the beach

We arrived without a booking and were lucky to be offered a table for an early dinner. The service and atmosphere is friendly and welcoming. The food we chose was delicious and beautifully served. The children's menu was perfect for our grandchildren. The expresso martini a super way to belatedly celebrate our daughter's 40th! A super treat all round. We would definitely recommend!

We booked last minute for an early evening meal and were able to park our small motor home no problem on the car park at the rear. First impression was a very nice clean bistro atmosphere. Staff were very obliging and proficient. Owner manager spent time to chat with us and was extremely friendly. We ordered fish and chips with a side of mushy peas that came at an extra charge. A beer and a medium glass of white wine along with water which came in a very nice pitcher. We took a dessert away to enjoy later. Food was excellent.. and we were offered extra chips. Nice crispy batter on the fish which was very tasty but not a large portion. Our only concern was with the pricing. I think this is the most we have ever paid for a fish and chip supper. Our bill totalled £68. As a one off it was a very enjoyable experience but I think if we lived locally we wouldn’t be regulars at these prices. It’s not a fine dining venue more a small comfortable bistro and the prices just don’t reflect this. In a seaside town there is a lot of competition for fish and chips at much lower prices. It was a very pleasant end to our short touring holiday and we would highly recommend the food .. just be prepared to pay more for it.

OMG this place was amazing! A true family fun business with super friendly staff and amazing food. It was lovely to have fish and chips without feeling bagged immediately after, or having the taste of grease the following morning. I attended as part of a work social and everyone (20 people) were raving about just how good the food was. A must visit when in Barry Island!

Absolutely superb! Stopped for fish and chips take away whilst out with the family. Immaculate staff, very polite and efficient. The cod in our food was as good as I've ever had. It was cooked to perfection too. Hats off to the chef! The chips were also superb. It was a very fair price due such excellent fare. I ran my own restaurant for nearly 20 years. So to visit someone making the huge effort to get everything so right, is something to be very grateful for. Thank you for a 10/10 lunch for my family! 💪

Nature & Parks
Park
Porthkerry Country Park is a 220-acre woodland area with nature trails, picnic sites, and a play area. The park boasts a lifeguarded beach with Blue Flag status for water quality and safety. It's also home to an imposing viaduct dating back to the 1890s. Visitors can explore the nearby islands by boat or enjoy surfing at Ogmore-by-Sea Surf School. Additionally, there's a museum offering insights into life during World War II.
Beautiful park and beach, although stoney, it's still a lovely place to sit. Watch out for Adders in the long grass, mind! The park is beautiful for dog walkers and families. Great little cafe with outside dining. Nice bit of history in the woods with the remains of the Witch's house. Though on our visit today, it looked like someone had been having a ritual 😂

Super picnic spot. Perfectly suited for gathering of any size. Ample parking spaces available. Paid parking. £4 for 4hrs. No barbecue allowed though, so we took cooked food and drinks with us. There's a pet shop and ice cream shop available near the parking. Would definitely recommend for a day outing with family. Close to the beach as well. Rest rooms are available and clean. Airport nearby, trains going on the bridge an amazing sight for the kids always. Oh also there's a nice playground for the kids with swings and see saws..

We visited Porthkerry Country Park a few weekends ago for a picnic with friends. What a lovely place to visit, especially with dogs. Lots of open grass areas, and shaded woods, with a stream running through it. Good concessions and a pebble beach is a 5 minute walk away. All-round a lovely picnic spot!

Lovely place for a family walk with the dog. Plenty of open space and woodland walks, as well as a lovely stretch of pebble beach.

Parking is reasonably priced, there is plenty to see and do, including the rocky beach, boardwalks, forest walks, little ponds and plenty of wildlife, a playpark and large fields nicely mown for kids to play on. The cafe is good, toilets could do with a refurb really, but are functional and free. Well worth a visit.
Kevin K — Google review
Recent improvements have been made to the park. There is a play area. The beach is a short walk but there is also a huge grass area to play or picnic. The cafe is lovely, I recommend the cannoli. No seating inside but plenty outside. There were kids on bikes and walks in the woodland too. The only downside was the toilets which need some care and attention. You pay for parking at the machine.

A great day out for young adventures. A large play area for little children to take full advantage. Lots of open grass areas for games and BBQs and fully catered for pets. The cafe is a little expensive but it's the only facility around for a drink or snack.

Ship is a cozy traditional pub with a relaxed atmosphere, offering a menu of comforting breakfast dishes and featuring TV games. A recent visitor reserved a table for lunch on their way to Barry Island and found the pub less crowded than expected. They were accommodated in a quieter area upon request and enjoyed the non-intrusive music. The food was praised for its quality and timely service, with options that pleased everyone at the table.
Came into the Ship for something to eat as visiting Barry. Cannot fault the service at all! We had Micky as our waitress and she was brilliant. Had an amazing date night here with my husband! Ordered the jerk chicken which was unreal and a huge portion. We sat quite close to the bar and had a few gins and finished with a cocktail each! Had a fantastic experience at The Ship in Barry thanks to Robert or Rob I think. Only stopped in the other day for drinks and he was an excellent bartender. He was friendly, welcoming, and really attentive throughout. The drinks were made perfectly, and his recommendations were spot on. His service made the visit extra enjoyable. He’s a real credit to the place. Highly recommend stopping by if you’re in Barry!

Micky our waitress was lovely and very attentive. Haven't been here for a while as the food last time was inedible. Decided to give it a go hoping things had improved. Well they have. We ordered two mini mixed grills. The chicken, gammon etc were fine. However the sausages must have been so cheap to buy. They had no meat taste at all and were mostly bulked out with cereal. All in all a big improvement from the last time however. Apparently Lee was the chef and as I say everything on the plate was fine except the sausage. Time for a supplier change I think.

I popped into The Ship Inn in Barry last weekend for a casual pint and some grub, and honestly, it was one of those spots that just hits the mark—stunning harbour views, a buzzing family vibe, and prices that won't break the bank. But let's be real, the star of the show was Rob behind the bar. This guy's a proper legend! From the moment I walked in, he greeted me with a massive grin and that easy Welsh charm that makes you feel like a regular, even if it's your first time. I was there with a mate, and Rob nailed our order without missing a beat—pulled the perfect pint of local ale and whipped up a loaded burger platter that arrived piping hot in under 10 minutes, despite the place being packed with post-beach crowds. He even threw in a cheeky recommendation for their new summer cocktail special, which was spot-on refreshing after a day dodging seagulls on Barry Island. Super attentive without being overbearing, cracking jokes that kept the energy light, and handling a rowdy group of kids like a pro. If you're into sports, ask him about the big screens—he's got the lowdown on every match. The Ship itself is a gem: massive beer garden for sunny afternoons, kid-friendly play area, and a menu that's all about value (think £10 mains that punch way above their weight). But Rob? He's the reason I'll be back next week. Absolute top bloke—friendly, efficient, and the kind of bartender who turns a quick drink into a proper night out. If you're in Barry, do yourself a favour and say hi to Rob. 10/10, no question! (Visited September 2025

Harvey's Fish & Chips is a delightful find for anyone craving fresh, delicious fish and chips. Customers rave about the generous portions and affordable prices, making it a standout compared to other local options. The batter on the cod is light and crispy, while the chips are perfectly cooked—never greasy. The friendly service adds to the experience, with patrons noting how welcoming the staff is.
Lovely fish and chips, and the spicy curry sauce is a must. My family has been going here for decades and will continue to do so. Best chip shop in the town. 😀

A hidden gem- thank you Google for letting us find this place!! Just the perfect fish and chips. Fish cooked beautifully with delicious batter and the ideal chip shop chips! Chicken nuggets were also fantastic. The people working there were so lovely as well! Would 100% recommend getting your fish and chips here! P.S it is cash only but the Sainsbury's up the road has a cash point ☺️

The best! Your fish & chips will be cooked to order, nothing soggy or greasy here. You won't wait long but while you do you'll have the chance of a friendly chat. If you ask, you'll get a history of the fish & chip shop & hear about how Derek the weatherman is a regular. Read the A4 printed prose stuck on the wall and have a smile at the stick-man falling and dropping his chips because he didn't mind the step.

Found this gem through Google. Everything is cooked to order, chips were nice and the batter was crisp and not too thick. Lovely being able to chat to the two gentlemen about the shop’s original owners. Well worth a visit.

Tried this chip shop tonight for the first time and we were not disappointed! After 16 months of living in South Wales we have FINALLY found a great chippy! They are cash only, so we had to dash to a convenience store to use a cashpoint. Really good service from a very friendly chatty man who I believe was the owner. We ordered cod and chips and it was perfect! The batter was light and crispy, perfectly cooked and the fish was delicious. Chips were also delicious and perfectly cooked, not greasy, just right. Generous portions. Cooked fresh while you wait, but not too long a wait at all. Very reasonably priced compared to other places. Cannot recommend this place enough. We will most definitely be back, just sorry it took so long to find them.

Excellent fish and chips, drove the food home 30 minutes and it still tasted amazing. Fully halal (apart from the pies).
