The Ffestiniog Railway, along with the Welsh Highland Railways, offers a unique experience of traveling through picturesque Welsh countryside on vintage carriages pulled by historic steam engines. The 14-mile journey takes you through rural pastures and forests, providing panoramic views of the stunning landscape. Visitors can also explore maritime history at the Maritime Museum and learn about Britain's first modern Prime Minister at the Lloyd George Museum.
This trip was my daughter’s Christmas present to me and what an incredible experience it was. We had quite a journey from north Herefordshire and it was worth every mile. We parked in their main carpark, where we had our lunch beside a small reservoir. It is a pay and display carpark and a five minute walk to the railway station. We arrived and after collecting our tickets, we walked onto the platform and waited for our train to arrive. A loco was filling up with water and another was offering footplate rides. Our train arrived and we were guided to our carriage. We would be travelling in First Class behind the engine, Merddin Emyrs, the Mountain Spirit, a double engined locomotive and about 140 years old, and still puffing along nicely. We watched as the locomotive was coupled to our carriage and soon we were on our way. Our amazing journey starts crossing along a harbour wall known as The Cob, and past Boston Lodge, where the locos go at the end of their busy schedules. From here, we travelled across fields before beginning the the long and picturesque journey to Blaneau Ffestiniog. We travelling past a few stations through very narrow cuttings, with slated sides, through tunnels and around the "Great Deviation", believed to be the only one in Britain. It took 6 years to build, by volunteers and raises the line 35ft in a circle, a real feat of engineering. We eventually arrived at Blaneau Station where the main line meets the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railway. Both services terminate here. A chance to get out, stretch our legs, take more photos of the slate mountains, grab a snack as the engine was moved to the other end of the train for the journey back to Porthmadog. Thankfully, we had taken plenty of photos on our outward journey because it came to a halt at the next station. As we waited for the next train, Linda was bringing the last train up to Blaneau. She arrived opposite us and departed and still we waited. Unfortunately we could see smoke across the valley from us and we wondered if it might be a fire. Soon the Train Manager advised us that, due to a potentially large line side fire, our return journey was being turned around. We returned to Blaneau where buses met us to take us all back to Porthmadog. Everyone was in good spirits and totally understanding. The drive back took about 20 minutes, where as the train took over an hour, allowing for water stops enroute. Yes, we were a little disappointed but everyone was safe and we all enjoyed the experience. We shall look forward to travelling from Caernarvon to Porthmadog, through the western fringes of Snowdonia. We received the very best of treatment and support from all the staff at the railway. The bus drivers were amusing and helpful, considering the circumstances.

Woodland Wanderer: Pretty average route/views, but less expensive than other longer routes. Visited on Sunday, 7th September 2025, having bought tickets on the Woodland Wanderer service, which started and ended at Harbour Station on the Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railways in Porthmadog. A little walk from the free station car park, we arrived and exchanged our online ticket for a paper ticket at the ticket office. Unallocated seating in the carriages, but the set-up for this service was to use carriages with separate but unenclosed inside compartments. This was hauled by the steam train from Porthmadog to Tan-Y-Bwlch. We had a dog and were advised we needed to cover the seat if the dog was to sit on it, which was fair enough. There are several services on this railway to different locations, but it is hard to tell what highlights we're going to see on each route, and the journeys are quite long and expensive except for the one we chose. As it was, bar the initial route from Harbour Station to Minffordd, the rest of this route was quite unattractive. Once at Tan-Y-Bwlch we were advised to return in the same carriage and seats. We had less than an hour to explore, but tbh there isn't much there to see, bar an uninspiring lake and the on-station cafe, which we couldn't access with a dog. On the return journey, the weather closed in, which never helps. Something to do, but I would want to pick a prettier route and have better weather if I were to go again.

An absolutely gorgeous day. The scenery along the route is spectacular, and being on the train feels so special. The staff are wonderful, friendly, and helpful. We really enjoyed the stopover in Caernarfon too. Ensure you book the on-board cream tea for the return trip, it's worth every penny.

The Ffestiniog & Welsh highland railway is a must do!! Clam, relaxing environment in the first class carriage! Staff are polite and professional! Views along the journey are fantastic! Truly a time to sit back and take in the Welsh scenery. 50 minute layover at Blaenau Ffestiniog, for some light exploring however not a great deal to do. Plenty of car parking! Would definitely recommend booking in advance, it gets quite busy! Great ride!
Jordan D — Google review
We travelled on two separate days to two different destinations, at all times the staff were incredibly nice, helpful & attentive. On one journey, to Caernarfon Castle, we shared a carridge with a man named Hywel who works for the company & I must say it was a lovely thing to see him enjoy a train ride on his day off even though he works along side trains every day, he was especially informative, and it made our journey even better, he pointed out the stunning waterfalls and landmarks along the way... Definitely recommend these trips, most of the staff are volunteers and they works hard to please every customer!

We visited today and did the quarryman gold first class Pullman from Blaenau to Porthmadog return. It was absolutely fantastic, we practically had the first class coach to ourselves and it was certainly worth the upgrade. The journey is stunning and I must mention Phil who was our host, he was so friendly and spent the time talking to us about various parts of the journey. Every staff member I came into contact with was the same, it's clear that they love what they do. The first class is pricey (£70) but absolutely worth every penny. I can also recommend Spooners bar at the station in Porthmadog for food, a really lovely place, great food and nice friendly staff.

Amazing day out! We did the gala day and it was such a great experience. It did get a bit chilly going through the mountains, so I’d definitely recommend bringing a warm jacket if it’s a cold day. Overall, it was a lovely experience! The only downside was the large gaps in the timetable — it would have been even better if we could do it all in one go. Would definitely recommend the mountain route❤️fanatic views. Lovely water falls

Travelled on the Mountain Spirit from Porthmadog to Blaenau Ffestiniog. We paid extra to travel 1st class and it cost £155 return for 2 people for a 3 hour trip. This included a 50 minute stop in Blaenau Ffestiniog. The station at Porthmadog is great for steam train enthusiasts. Lots of steam engines and carriages to view. The station had toilets, a well stocked gift shop and a cafe. The staff and volunteers are friendly and helpful. First Class was clean and comfortable with an armchair style seat and a small table There is a designated member of staff who gives a brief talk about the railway (and sells guide books) plus offers refreshments. I ordered a tea abd a piece of cake. I was a little disappointed for it to arrive in a plastic cup and the cake in its plastic wrapper. I was expecting a China cup and a plate, but maybe my expectations were a little high - after all it's not the Orient Express! The train journey itself is wonderful. You see lots of Snowdonia National Park, which includes lakes and mountains. The seats are very comfortable. We arrived at Blaenau Ffestiniog, which is famous for its slate production. This was a bit disappointing, even though we only had 50 minutes the village looked a bit run down. We couldn't find a cafe and ended up buying a take away coffee from the local Morrisons. Overall, a very enjoyable day out.

Porthmadog's Maritime Museum offers a captivating journey through the town's maritime heritage, showcasing its rapid 19th-century expansion as a bustling slate exporting and shipbuilding hub. Housed in the last remaining slate shed on the harbor, this museum features an extensive collection of artifacts that provide insight into the port's history and the lives of seafarers.

A Timeworn Treasure by the Harbour Tucked beside the charming harbour of Porthmadog lies a doorway to the past—the Maritime Museum, a compact but captivating trove of seafaring history. Step inside, and you’re instantly transported to an age of wind and timber, where ships were born from salt-kissed wood and brave souls charted courses into the unknown. Through artifacts, maps, and tales etched into time, you'll discover when and how Porthmadog’s proud vessels were crafted and launched into legend. This hidden gem is a must for curious minds and history-lovers alike. If you’ve ever wondered what stories whisper through the waves of a seaside town, this is the perfect place to listen.

Very enjoyable visit and pleasantly surprised at how interesting and how much there was to see. The lady volunteer (sorry I didn't get her name) was very helpful and informative. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit. At only £2 entrance fee what's not to like. Well worth a visit😊

A fascinating and interesting museum providing an amazing insight of Portmadog, it's industry, people and it's connection with seafaring across the world. Friendly enthusiastic staff (volunteers) and the venue is dog friendly.

Very small but it's worth a visit only small charge £2 each not bad consider loks voluntary staff place, the staff there were friendly knew lot about the area how they use to supply slate across the world by boat, and steam train.

The maritime museum at Porthmadog is a gem of a museum to visit and you will get a warm welcome from the volunteer team. We expected the Slate Industry would feature in the exhibits and we were pleasantly surprised to learn that shipbuilding was also a major business for the town. A 10-minute video explained how the port developed into a major export hub to take the, best-in-the-world, slate to Europe, the Americas, Asia and Australia and the ships exporting the slate were all built right outside. The artefacts on display bring to life what is now a sleepy yacht harbour and you will leave feeling a lot of respect for the vision of these entrepreneurs of the 19th Century and the skill of the shipbuilders.

Cadwaladers is a local institution in Porthmadog, offering buttery Welsh ice cream with flavors that change throughout the year. The venue also serves a variety of items on the menu, including milkshakes, waffles, sandwiches, and a great selection of cakes. Visitors were impressed with the ice cream quality and friendly staff during their multiple visits.
We returned to Porthmadog after a number of shops were, understandably, closed on Sunday when we first visited. But after having a look around, we decided to stop off somewhere for a drink and a piece of cake. There are a number of cafés in the town, but this one seemed the best of all. The lady who served us was really pleasant, and there was a great selection of cakes for those with a sweet tooth. There are also a number of things one can have from the menu, from milkshakes and waffles, to sandwiches etc. I managed to nab the last piece of rainbow cake, which was delicious and a perfect treat, along with the silky hot chocolate. We were lucky to get a seat, as it was already fairly full and once we'd found a seat on the comfy sofa, there were more people coming in, so good thing we came when we did! A lovely place to stop off for a while after a walk around town, for something to eat or a sweet treat and a hot drink. Definitely a thumbs up from us! 👍🏻

Reply to Owner Sunday 9th check your cctv all you want, 1 person serving, he was busy with a large drinks order, asked if anyone else was serving he advised he was on his own ? I was there when I took the photo ? So the honest review stands, product was ok service and price was not. Also your card reader should be positioned so your customer can see the price being charged ? Not sitting flat on the counter where the cones are where it can’t be seen ? And you should also automatically offer a receipt when taking a card payment ? It’s not the customers job to ask for one ? Called in for an ice cream for my grandson 1 person serving in the whole cafe ? While the product was ok the service was diabolical unacceptable slow ? Need to invest in some staff ? When you’re charging £4 for a single scoop ice cream ? And provide no service to warrant such cost ? Very disappointing experience, if it wasn’t for my grandson I would have walked out, will definitely not be returning any time soon ? Unsure why it’s rated so highly ?? Overpriced with no customer service should be 0* review.

Cadwaladers is a well-known name on the peninsular, with another branch in Criccieth too. They serve hot drinks, food and ice-cream. Service on the day I visited was slow, although the lady taking the order was friendly enough. The coffee roast used was very strong, harsh-tasting and not that pleasant, which is a shame. Also, this café blazed a trail a few years back with clear vegan options and labelling. This is no longer the case, which feels like a retrograde step. This branch is just a couple of doors away from one of those anonymous chain coffee shops, and I hope this small chain can make sure that they keep relevant and make sure that every aspect of their offering tells their customers that they have made the right decision by going there.

We went twice to Cadwaladers twice over the bank holiday weekend. We were totally impressed with the ice cream, the flavour available, venue and the friendly staff! The price was excellent we were very happy that they do a kids ice cream for £1.50 which is great for a fussy toddler who only wants half! I would highly recommend the pistachio and the Turkish delight! We visited again in October the children's ice creams have gone up to £1.50 but still a good price. Staff were friendly and let us sit in whilst we ate our ice creams!

Check out their new millionaire waffle. Its a huge portion. Nice, clean and comfortable little place in the heart of Porthmadog. So many ice cream choices includes Vegetarian, vegan, dairy free and gluten free range. They've got teas and coffees as well. Visit them if you are around. You'll be happy

Have been coming here for 10+ years, best ice cream in Wales. Was really disappointed today when we tried to order to eat in at the other side of the bar and got walked past twice, waited ten minutes before deciding to try at the other till, we joined the queue there waiting another 10 minutes and on ordering the server rolled her eyes at me when asking if we wanted anything else. Slow and rude service really letting the place down.

Absolutely love the beers..but what have you done to your labelling? Why fix what wasnt broken. You have become generic now. The best specialist breweries have their own beautiful branding. It's creative and tells a story. I came across and bought Purple Moose as a gift for someone because of the label, bought some for ourselves too..and as a result we became long -time consumers. Great stop on our road trip of Wales! This was dinner for 2 adults and 2 children, the children had a kids menu. Beer was perfect, food was really great. Service was friendly and fun. One thing - I felt the walls upstairs were plain (but still nice!) compared to downstairs - perhaps some impressive photos of moose could liven it up? Anyway definitely recommend coming here.

The Sunday roast was delayed as the chef was on a break until 5pm, food wasn't great when it came. Lumpy mash, bland Gravy and the potatoes/veg were hard and wrinkly. Roast lamb, although plenty, was cold . Staff looked cheesed off they were busy. Nice place inside and they serve the beers and ciders from the local brewery. Dogs are welcome.

Great food, great beer, and a relaxed evening overall. We booked in advance and had a lovely meal — both kids and adults enjoyed everything we ordered. First time trying Purple Moose beer, and both the stout and High Hops were excellent — even if one member of staff felt the need to tell me the one I ordered was rubbish (I disagreed!). Ordering at the bar caught us by surprise as it wasn’t mentioned when we were seated, but no big deal. One or two staff interactions felt a bit off, but it didn’t take away from the overall experience. We'd happily return.

My wife had the prawns and myself the pork belly starters with a katsu curry sauce. My wife loved the prawns, and the pork belly was one of the best I've eaten. Onto our mains, we both had the meatball pasta wife had the GF pasta option and had sides of the millionaire fries and garlic fries and some GF breads, all of which tasted wonderful. Staff were friendly and inviting, and happy to answer any questions about the food. Portions were good-sized, and we had to take a doggy bag with us with the bread and some of the meatball pasta.

Absolutely outstanding sunday lunch. Perfectly seasoned and freshly prepared produce on the premises. Hats off to the chef who clearly understands flavour and flavour combinations. Really cannot fault it. Staff were lovely and also knowledgeable on what they are serving, describing precisely how the chef made a particular dessert. Y Banc is definitely one to watch.

Wonderful food, really excellent find for the area. Brilliant flavours, generous portions, kind and caring staff. Buzzy atmosphere and really delicious wine. We had a Rioja that was delicious with the porky dishes we ordered. The pork belly dish was sooooo good!!

As stated in other comments seems a little bit overpriced for what it is. As you can see the duck breast is actually some bit of breast!!! The taste was good and the staff really nice. I have seen some comments of been slow wasn't the case but was only 3/4 tables at that time

We visited the newly opened ‘Y Banc’ in its first few days of opening. The restaurant bring new life into Porthmadog, with stylish surroundings and a different way of dining. We had a sneaky peek and saw the private dining area which is the refurbished strong room, complete with a giant safe and original banking signs. We had a table for two and had the gorgeous bread appetisers along with the pan con tomate, which is one of my favourite dishes when we go to Spain. To follow my partner had black pudding and beetroot toquitos, marinated beef steak and Menai mussels which he said where to die for. We shared mushrooms and patatas bravas. I had the vegetable paella, smoky chick peas and tandoori spices cauliflower with homemade mango chutney. We were rather full, but we did leave room for desserts, namely churros with chocolate sauce and the lime mousse. I have dietary requirements and I am pleased to say, the menu was clearly labelled and the staff happy to answer questions as to allergens. We pop down to Porthmadog fairly regularly, so this will make a nice change from the usual pub grub when we get into town.

Lovely restaurant. Great food and very friendly staff. High quality food. Not the cheapest restaurant but worth the cost. Loved sitting in the vault of the old bank.

We had a great experience in here. Delicious food and very friendly staff. We ordered 12 tapas for 4 people. Duck, oriental pork and chickpeas were the best 😋 I give only 4 ⭐ because smaller portions and more expensive in compare to another tapas place we visited two days earlier

Breakfast restaurant
The Big Rock Cafe is a family-run establishment in Porthmadog, LL49, known for its quality breakfast and brunch offerings. Visitors praise the friendly staff and recommend trying the delicious breads, breakfast rolls, and a variety of hot drinks. The cafe's beautiful aesthetic adds to the overall experience. Customers also appreciate the relaxed seating area at the back of the cafe.
Would give 6 stars if I could to my favourite café in the UK! The food here is always fresh and beautiful, with very friendly staff. I come here almost every day when I'm holidaying near Porthmadog, and the staff recognise me and my partner even after nearly a year away! Plenty of vegan options and a good rotating stock of savouries and desserts. Cozy seating area in a gorgeous building that feels deeply established and historical. You couldn't ask for more in a place; one that serves not just baked goods, but a helping of human kindness cushioned between proper doorstep slices of bread.
Michael L — Google review
The Rock Café quickly became one of my favorite stops. The drinks were absolutely amazing — super refreshing and full of flavor. I had a coffee that was simply fabulous — smooth, rich, and clearly made with care. I also tried one of their sourdough sandwiches and a bowl of soup, and both were fantastic. Everything tasted fresh and homemade, with just the right balance of comfort and flavor. The vibe was warm and welcoming, and I felt right at home. I’ll definitely be coming back next time I’m in the area. Highly recommend!

We found this place by chance while staying in the area for the week. We’re so glad we did, we ate here 3-4 times. The double espresso was perfect, unlike the many coffee chains these days. The food is all so fresh, I can highly recommend the toasted sandwiches, Homity pie and granola. The toasted sandwiches are HUGE! I had bacon and Brie and the bread is so fresh tasting. Service was also great with good humour. The only slight criticism would be the tables could be wiped more often, but a few crumbs didn’t spoil it at all! Lovely staff, perfect food and something truly different.

Brilliant coffee shop, very welcoming and the taste is really good. The whole café is clean and well-presented. I totally recommend this coffee shop and cappuccinos here. One of the best coffee shops I have been to.

Update: The cafe eventually replied and apologised for the mouldy cake. We were offered a refund or free cake and drinks. When we visited at midday there were no more cakes, so we had donuts instead. These were ok, but nothing special. Original review: We bought vegan carrot cake to take home but discovered two spots of mould on it. Too late to return, we emailed the cafe but they didn't even bother answering. We rang and staff confirmed they knew about the mould but didn't even offer an apology, only said "the owner doesn't live in the area" as if that somehow clears them of responsibility.
Odilon C — Google review
Very nice sausage rolls. I waited in the que on two occasions to buy the sausage rolls after reading reviews and was not dissapointed. However, it is very popular, so there seems to always be a que, right in the doorway, which moves very slowly. I didn't find it comfortable, the stationary que right at the entrance, with families standing over the displayed goods and being too loud. But it seems very fancy and popular and the sausage rolls vere excellent.
Hela D — Google review
This cafe gives the feel of trying to be a trendy upper end place. Food is OK. Service is crap, customer service leaves A LOT to be desired (except the young guy serving drinks who was the only polite person in there) topped off with clear your own table and leave a tip in a birdbox on the wall. Wouldn't recommend at all. Would fit better on a student campus.
Rachel B — Google review
Baked goods are good and generous in size. I found the coffee to be a bit meh and not to my personal taste, but other people may like it. Oddly religious with comics advertising the bible and Christian merch, but generally a calm cozy place with lots of seating

The Port Cafe Deli & Restaurant is a charming eatery located in Porthmadog, offering a delightful selection of British cuisine. Visitors can indulge in yummy homemade cakes and enjoy tasty dishes at fair prices. The welcoming staff adds to the inviting atmosphere, making it a hidden gem for both locals and tourists seeking a satisfying dining experience.
Friendly and welcoming service. Lovely atmosphere , enjoyed Fish and Chips naan and poppadoms. vegan pastry and tea cake , freshly made and hot food. The staff were absolutely lovely nothing was too much trouble! Great location for those arriving on one of the heritage trains to Porthmadog. Port Cafe is a large place Lots of staff all keeping busy and doing a great job keeping things moving and looking after customers. The food was gorgeous! We were on holiday and this was the best place we ate we will be back for more! Great customer service.

Fabulous. I had a very generous serving of lamb’s liver with chips (fresh and crispy), and apple pie and custard. The prices were very reasonable too. The staff were quick, polite and friendly, all you could want, really. And the tables were really clean, no sticky stuff or wet disinfectant. The only negative is that the salt came out very fast, but that might have been the wrong cellar. They are licensed, if you fancy a tipple with your grub. Great place, and I will absolutely come again.

Step into a world where flavor reigns supreme and every bite feels like a celebration! This enchanting eatery serves up fabulous food that dances on the palate and an atmosphere that wraps around you like a warm, joyful breeze. The desserts? Works of art—almost too beautiful to eat, yet somehow tasting even better than they look (and that’s saying something!). The magic doesn’t end with the food; the prices are delightfully down-to-earth, making indulgence entirely guilt-free. If you find yourself in Porthmadog, do not miss this place—it’s not just a recommendation, it’s a quest worth undertaking for lunch or dinner. A true must-visit for any food lover or seeker of delicious adventure!

We were a family of ten out for Father’s Day and had no problem sitting together, we waited approximately 10 minutes but this didn’t bother us as this place is very busy. The staff are very friendly and helpful. There are two vegetarians in our group and there were a couple of options for them. The majority of us had a roast dinner ( turkey, beef and ham). Every one of us all commented on how delicious the food was. Food was hot and plentiful . We can’t fault this place. The service was excellent and we will be back.

Service was great. Nice welcome. Clean. Food cooked nice. The only thing I didn't like was the bench seating. I'm a large chap. So it's a bit tight between the table and chairs. Normal people don't need to worry. Just us big belly chaps. Maybe it's to stop us from eating to much. Ha ha. So . Price was good. Service was excellent. Food was good.

Wow the food! Great Deli and fabulous restaurant. Should you be in Porthmadog and you don’t pop in for a bite to eat you have missed out on some amazing food with fantastic service. Warm welcome every time Lemon Meringue pie is to die for. The Port breakfast is delicious The black pudding is tasty soft and the best I’ve had in some months. Their home made onion rings also not to be missed So return in 2025 and the breakfast is still amazing with the very best black pudding I’ve ever tasted. Plus their lemon meringue pie is simply to die for

Day 2

Center of town
For day 2, we recommend exploring the center side of town. Start the day off with Welsh Highland Heritage Railway, then wind down and take it easy by the time you get to Portmeirion. All together, your day would be filled with about 8 hours of non-stop fun.

Scenic Railroads
Porthmadog, a town known for its railway culture, is home to the Welsh Highland Heritage Railway. This miniature railway offers visitors the opportunity to ride on a steam train and explore the heritage center, which provides extensive information about trains and railways. The center also allows hands-on experiences to understand how the engines work. Additionally, there is a museum with various engines for children to climb on and historical artifacts.
If you're visiting Porthmadog then you must visit here. A real family oriented railway with super staff/ volunteers. There's plenty of free parking on site or it's just a short walk from the town. The short train ride takes you down the line and returns stopping at the museum which has much to see and do. The static displays are well documented and have staff happy to talk about. Some of the items are interactive and allow you to board. Here you can also take a ride on the miniature railway ( included in the entrance ticket). Returning back to the main station there's a cafe, toilets and shop. The shop has a wide range of souvenirs, railway books and model railways, mostly narrow gauge models all at a good price. The visit was really good and is a brilliant place for families with youngsters. Must give a shout out to all the staff/ volunteers as they really added to the enjoyment of the day. Although the railway has a brilliant family focus it still a good appeal for us older folks. The site has good accessibility and is dog friendly with water available .

Brilliant and worth a visit. We had our lunch with us so got to eat it on train, the museum is so fun for all ages, interactive with mini train too. Staff are all wonderful and patient the whole family enjoyed this especially seeing Karen, the old phones still in use and just a jam packed adventure. We all thoroughly enjoyed and recommend this!

My husband has been coming here since the late 80s and now it was finally time to bring our 15 month old son! We had a lovely morning and our boy had lots of fun. The train driver and conductor were full of knowledge and spirit. Our son got to work the signal box and the horn on the engine, never too young to get them interested in our Heritage railways ♥️ The museum had lots of interactive displays for children of all ages and a ride on a miniature railways as well for a bonus! It's significantly more affordable then most narrow guage railways in the UK as well and is the perfect length ride to keep kids engaged! The shop and cafe are also lovely and worth a visit. The parents and Nanny also very much enjoyed the visit. Thank you Welsh Highland Railway!
Noortje P — Google review
This is one of the nicest museums I've been to. It's experience driven, with a small steam train taking you to a small exhibition space. Everything is period decorated. The volunteers who run the museum put on a great show and are very knowledgeable. It's good for adults as much as for kids.
Plamen T — Google review
This place blew all expectations away, we expected a short ride on a private railway. What we got was an interactive train experience that was clearly ran by people who love trains and what they do. They got the kids involved in signals and switching tracks. The museum was very interactive too which kept our kids (2 & 6) very entertained Highly recommended and will definitely return for another visit
Matt B — Google review
It's only a small ride length, but that's not the point. Lovingly cared fir locos and rolling stock take you fir a round trip including a museum stopover and included miniature train ride. The museum is very good with lots of hands on and interactive exhibits. We like the fact that children wee encouraged to help change points and signals. Throw in an excellent shop, and cafe with very friendly and helpful staff and it's a great way to spend an hour. If you want longer rides then the Ffestiniog or Welsh Highland railways are tge place to go.
Tim D — Google review
I absolutely can not thank you enough for our day out with ease. We have many challenges with our SEND children when on days out and you was so welcoming and helpful and we appreciate you putting another carriage on to accomidate our twins over summer when we came to visit while on our holidays. The lady in the shop was really nice to the children and they loved the motorised thomas and the helpers on the trai ride and at the museum was all really nice. Its nice to not feel like a pain to people for once we absolutely cant tell you how you made our day for us and our children. We will definitely come back and visit you next year 💚. All the staff do an amazing job 👏

The population of the Porthmadog community decreased slightly from 4,185 in 2011 to 4,134 in 2019.2(#citenote-2) Originally thriving as a port for local slate during the 19th century, it later transformed into a popular shopping and tourism destination due to its proximity to Snowdonia National Park and the Ffestiniog Railway.
Was quiet and peaceful when parked up by here
Leighton C — Google review
This is an odd public park. There are a few reasons for my lower rating. First, there is no parking nearby, which wouldn't be an issue normally, but as a part of the park is devoted to a football pitch, I cannot imagine the difficulty in getting the equipment in and out, or also how to get convenient access for the disabled. Second, it is a really strange mixture of ball field, playground and historical site, as the stone circle is right on the edge of the field, which is just odd. Finally, this park has a very strict no dogs policy, with high fines. The stone circle is interesting though, and worth a stop to check it out.

Got this view from the train station and couldn't stop to take a pic because so eye catching. Beautiful church building standing in the greenery. This place was recommended by a friend. What a great recommendation. We had beautiful weather for late September, so sat outside. The seats are roadside(parked cars), but good views over the quay and pretty bay. I drank a lovely cold cider , my partner enjoyed a latte. We both loved the cottage pie, smothered in cheese! Great place, very friendly service, superb food.

This litle café/bistro has a great and buzzing atmosphere. Staff is really lovely, attentive, and friendly. Prices are at a medium range. The decor is beachy and very cute. Here, you willfind an extensive breakfast menu and also some very good lunch options. Enjoy the sea views from the outside seating area.

Pretty basic cafe food in a strange set up - the food is cooked in adjacent building and carried to the cafe on the street outside (through the rain!). This means the door to the cafe is constantly opened, with a stiff draught blowing in. Breakfast menu seemed interesting but dishes themselves were underwhelming

The restaurant has the potential to be amazing, just get rid of the rude staff! We booked over the phone and when we arrived, on time, we were told to hurry up and order as the kitchen was nearly closed. The staff were abrupt, and discourteous. Particularly the woman, who was the double of Morticha from the Munsters, the service was exceptionally rude. Other people came in after we had ordered and they were treated equally as badly. The food was average . Such a shame, given the gorgeous views and delightful atmosphere of the village. The Welsh Tourist Board should give these ladies lessons in hospitality.

If you're on the hunt for an exceptional Chinese takeaway, look no further than Happy Chop Suey House. Now conveniently located nearby, it's hard to resist the temptation of dining out more often! Was a little reluctant to order, having read the reviews of late deliveries! Have to say, my order was 10 mins after the time suggested, but on a Saturday evening, with an order being delivered out of town (portmeirion) I think that's pretty reasonable. Food was hot and tasty. Thoroughly recommended.

THE WORSE FOOD EVER GIVE THIS PLACE A COMPLETE MISS the food is terrible and it all went in the bin disgusting food
Mike H — Google review
All the takeaways in the area are pricey compared to England. Quality was very good. Chicken balls are large, rice is great, chow mein nice. Chicken with cashews had a smoky flavour not nice. You can park on the adjacent close going up hill.
Ergo F — Google review
This is without doubt the worst chinese meal we have ever had. The curry was sweet with absolutely no spice and tasted foul. My wife had the chow mein which was completely tasteless. The only saving grace was the pancake rolls which were very tasty but really greasy. I cannot understand why anyone would give the food a good review, almost any other restaurant would be better than this. I had to give one star as it wouldn't let me give none.
Peter M — Google review
In my experience (I've moved around a fair bit) most Chinese takeaways are good at either rice or noodles and this place is no exception. Anything with rice here 5 out of 5 every time but the noodles not so much, although nice a tad to greasy for me. Saying that every thing else I've had from here has been spot on every time. Staff are lovely, especially the owner Mrs Lee.
Mustafa Z — Google review
Hands down the best chinese food around. I have had many takeaways here in the last couple of years and they have all been superb. Everything is home cooked. These people spend all night cooking and cleaning and preparing for the next day. They dont use frozen stuff, its all fresh and you can tell this when you eat it. The pancake rolls and crispy beef are superb.
Mel S — Google review
Best Chinese takeaway we've ever tried; all others are dire, dreary and greasy by comparison! We'd regularly make a 360-mile round trip to eat here (and be in North Wales, generally) - now we're less than half-an-hour away, it's actually local! Temptation is to eat out more often than cooking at home... Excellent, friendly service, wide range of menu choices, everything cooked fresh - never disappointing, always even more delicious than we were hoping...

I started coming here 9 months ago and every meal I have had has been fantastic. Food is prepared fresh, all home made and authentic. By far the best chinese food I have had in a long time. Hats off to the owner. Best take away in Porthmadog by a country mile.

Super friendly staff & wonderful restaurant, enjoyed breakfast & our evening meals here - the only problem was our trip came to an end & we had to come home. Very well done. Looking forward to returning.

We chose this hotel as we were going to a wedding at Portmeirion, which is approximately 3 miles away. Set on the High Street, which was pleasant to walk along. The room was comfortable, the restaurant had a variety of dishes and very tasty. The breakfast was varied. The staff were very friendly and helpful.

Great hotel and friendly staff. Lovely bar and restaurant. We had breakfast which was good. Downside was the room. We were put in room 7 in the courtyard, as soon as we walked in the smell of wet dog was incredibly strong. We kept the door and window open but it did not go. The double bed also on the left side slopped so felt like I was going to fall out however it was comfy. The smell of dog is as strong as ever this morning. I have reported it as it’s very unpleasant.

Dropped in to have a cold drink and read for a while on a hot day. Very welcoming people, comfortable and nice and cool! And my beer was good. Well worth a visit if you are nearby.

My son stayed at this hotel for six nights while completing a placement with Ffestiniog Railways. His experience was wonderful—from the warm hospitality to the delicious meals, everything was top-notch. He was genuinely well looked after during his stay. After checking out, the housekeeping team found that he had accidentally left behind a calculator and a book. They promptly contacted me via email and went the extra mile by arranging to return the items through a courier. I'm truly grateful for their thoughtfulness and outstanding service. It’s rare to find such attentive and caring hospitality, and it left a lasting impression on us both.

We much appreciated the disabled parking space reserved for us. The room would have scored 5 stars but for the lack of carpets. Excellent breakfasts and helpful staff. Good location.

What a lovely hotel. A family run establishment with family values. Lovely food and such friendly staff. Comfy bed. Perfect location for our day at Portmierion. Porthmadog is a nice town with lots of shops selling local arts and crafts.

Sandwich shop
If you're on the lookout for a delightful spot to grab a bite, look no further than Kitty's Coffee, Cakes & Sandwiches. This charming café offers an impressive selection of sandwiches and baguettes, all made with fresh ingredients and served on crusty bread that’s simply irresistible. The homemade coleslaw is a standout dish that many rave about! While the staff may not be overly expressive, their efficiency ensures you get your meal promptly.
Definitely the best cafe for sandwiches, baguettes and salad. Great selection of options for everyone in the family. Excellent portions and great value for money. So glad we stumbled across it accidentally. We are going back again tomorrow for lunch!

Bought two turkey, stuffing and cranberry baguettes to go. If you get the opportunity do have one. Baguettes were fresh and tasty and the filling was generous. No skimping here. Absolutely delicious. Hope to visit again before we go home.

Such a lovely little cafe with great service, a good menu, and some gluten free options! The latte I ordered is very smooth and me and my partner adored our food.

Decent little sandwich shop - good range of breads and fillings. All sensibly priced! Jacket Potato's and Salads also available

Went two days in a row on holiday. The sandwiches are stunning and the bread is lovely crusty baguettes with a bit flour on top, almost ciabatta style. The coleslaw is to die for, if you like home made coleslaw. The staff aren't very smiley, but it could just be the way the people are here. Not sure. Will defo go back if we come down this way again.

We had a sandwich to takeaway. Very good pricing considering the generous serving they do. Good quality food, fresh bread and friendly service.

Great food, toasted sandwich and a salad so substantial I couldn't eat it all, service was good. Highly recommend

The best cappuccino I've had ( I should have asked for the blend) and the homemade cakes were delightful. The owner and staff were very welcoming and professional.

Black Rock Llamas offers an amazing experience with friendly and knowledgeable staff. The llama trek is not too long, but some parts can be a bit rough, so caution is advised. Visitors get to walk the llamas and even engage in llama agility, followed by photo opportunities and a chance to feed the llamas. The llamas are described as chilled out and fun to walk with.
I booked on this experience fairly last minute as the weather wasn't great but it has been my favourite thing to do. Sophie was friendly, knowledgeable and helpful, she answered all our questions and made it really fun. You are met at the front gate by her and drive to the parking area then walk in to where the llamas are waiting. In our group there was a family of 4, a family of 3 and myself, and we had 5 llamas to walk between us. Sophie taught us about the llamas and how to walk them and look after them. You can stroke their necks which are really soft and they have beautiful eyes! Children under the age of 7 aren't meant to be there but there was a 7 year old on our trek and he did really well. The llamas have head harnesses and leads and you can guide them fairly easily. My llama was called Boris and he just seemed to want to stop and eat every few steps but he was friendly and so soft. The outside of the centre is beautiful and you trek through the woodland as a group. Once you return to the centre after about 40 minutes walking you get to feed your llama from your hands and then have a go at llama agility! I can't recommend this experience enough, something very different from the norm and even if you're alone it's fun. Wear decent shoes if you're trekking as the path is uneven and steep at various points and it is quite windy up there. There's a shelter where we stood for a while but I didn't see any toilets so best to go before you arrive. The postcode takes you to the entrance to the site which is well signed.

Had an absolutely lovely trek with black rock llamas - Dexter and Harley to be precise! Dexter is apparently the leader of the herd, and their agility trained llama and Harley, a young but well behaved and sweet 3 year old. Sophie, the instructor, was incredibly cheerful, friendly and welcoming, and went through everything clearly. She accompanied us on our trek, let us stop for photos, and chatted with us wonderfully, answering all our questions and queries, and about our holiday in general. The agility course was great fun, she let us have multiple turns and took great photos and videos for us. All in all, a great day out and great customer service!

I had THE best time here! It was so knowledgable. Sophie was so kind, funny and personable and you can really see they have a passion for llamas here. I’ll definitely be coming back!

Absolutely enjoyed this one of a kind experience. A great activity if you’re on holiday. Our guide was super kind and helpful and really good at her job. The price was worth it as well- it includes the trek, feeding the llamas and an agility course with a 2x guiness world record champion Llama. Would highly recommend

We had such a great visit and stroll with the llamas. We had a trek with Boris who was fun and feisty and a cuddle with big softy Dexter. All of the llamas are well loved and very well looked after. Luckily the weather was kind to us and the llama agility was hilarious. 😃thank you for such a fun time and we have great photos too.

We had the best time here. Sophie was an incredible guide. I would recommend to anyone, worth every single penny! My children (11 and 12) loved it too. The Llama's are so well behaved and such a beautiful animal, we learnt so much about them and we now have a new favourite animal! We did Zipworld on the same day and the whole family thought this was the better activity!

An amazing experience that I'll never forget, would highly recommend! Derek was very friendly and knowledgeable, and took some lovely pictures of us with our new Llama friends!

Visited here July 28 2022 with my 8 year old nephew,. What an amazing experience, so lovely to hear about the llamas from the leader,. He took time , there was no rushing round waiting for the next party, so relaxed. We trekked with Casper, Guinness works record holder no less😁. My nephew thoroughly enjoyed it too. 🤗 Wonderful couple of hours including the trek itself, photos which the leader very kindly took each member's phones to take their pictures with the llamas, then trek back to feed them, then Casper showed his talents on the assault course before another set of photos if you wanted to. Amazing afternoon. Thank you xx

Fish & chips restaurant
At The Schooner, the experience of enjoying fish and chips is truly delightful. Guests rave about the generous portions, especially when opting for a smaller size of chips that still delivers great value at just £8.50. While some diners noted that the batter on the fish could be crispier, they were impressed by its freshness and flavor. The staff are friendly and accommodating, even going above and beyond to provide extra sauces with meals.
The staff were really friendly, chatty, and even gave us some extra sauces to go with our meals! A couple of us had fish that had maybe been sat a tad too long but the flavour on everything was great and we loved the chips. Would highly recommend 😊

Ordered fish n chips...only wanted sm portion of chips so asked for a cone size. Cooked to order and a large portion for the money...£8.50. The chips were scrummy...the fish was fresh , but the batter was not crispy as I'd prefer. However for the money it was fantastic value. The staff including the grumpy woman (she's not...she's just doing her job in a hot environment with probably some rude customers often!!) were all great and my order was ready in 5 mins. I think previous reviews have been misleading...this is good food in a place where there's not a lot on offer. I am staying at greenacres but their reviews for fish n chips are always bad so will not buy from haven. Hope this helps you choose where to buy

Would you like some chips with your grease? They was all stuck together and eating them they left a lining of fat in your mouth 🤢🤢 Battered sausage hmmmm..... Not a lot of batter and the kids bit I to them and found a load of grease in them it was not a nice meal at all
William ( — Google review
The only place I buy fish and chips. The chips are always spot on as are the other things we have tried from their menu. It's absolutely true that I have no chip shop locally that is anywhere as good as this within 10 miles of my home, so when we holiday here we always get our fill while we can.
John U — Google review
Worse and most expensive fish & chips I've had in all my life !!! Not to mention the service. The woman who served me never smiled and never spoke. It felt like you were in a concentration camp ! When I took my Fish & Chips home, the fish wasn't cooked properly and the chips were hard and tasted sweet. Only afterwards I realised I had payed £10.80 for Fish & Chips which were inedible. I know prices have gone up but £6.50 for a fish and a whopping £4.30 for chips. Writing this in-between throwing up. My advice is AVOID AND GO ELSEWHERE !!
D.J D — Google review
Not great for the money chips had been sitting in the draw to long and were soggy and the sausage in batter had been sat way to long and was hard and dry. Make sure you ask for freshly cooked stuff
David P — Google review
Fresh food & lovely people! Had a few too many chips on holiday but can’t say we regret it lol!

We are on a family break , ( 9 or us in total ) it was round about 7 when we arrived in the caravans Thought we would pop chippy closes at 8 we went 7:15 7:30 , wow the looks when we walked in the moaning the houghs and puffs , just horrible Wouldn’t mind but it was nothing to complicated just food that was there 🫣 We spent £55 pounds in total , never ever will we go back , you really do not deserve customers . Shocking service
