Perched atop the town of Morella, Castell de Morella is an ancient fortress with a rich history dating back to the 3rd millennium BC. The large Moorish castle, built in the 13th century on earlier Iberian and Roman foundations, offers panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and hills. Visitors can explore its steep roads, medieval streets, churches, and walls before hiking up to admire its well-preserved walls and terraces.
We walked up to the castle which was quite a trek, zigzagging up the hill. Once we got past the metal bridge after the modern bull ring I walked along to the left to see the statue of Ramon Cabrera, a guerilla leader in one of the Spanish succession wars and views over the ruined convent of St Francis. Access to the castle from there was blocked so I walked all the way back and carried on up the hill to the main gate. This had obviously been repaired recently but if an attacker even go that far I'd be impressed. The area before the summit contained the governors palace (now housing an exhibition of the town's history) and various admin, storage and living rooms and a prison. The 19th century improvements were very visible with extra walls and batteries due to the capabilities of modern canon, two of which were added to the castle in the 1950s. The top of hill was very windswept and had lots of rooms with information boards but in Spanish only. The views, as you can image, were just fantastic with the lower fortifications, the city walls, the medieval aquaduct and the wider Valencian countryside all layed out.

Wow, climbing up to Morella’s castle felt like stepping into a medieval saga! The steep, winding path had my heart racing, but those jaw-dropping views of the Valencian countryside? Totally worth every step. The fortress, perched at 1,073 meters, is a time capsule did you know it was first built by the Moors in the 900s on Roman ruins? For just €2, you get to explore its ancient walls and towers. Wear comfy shoes, bring a water bottle, and don’t skip the tiny fossil jewelry shop at the exit those pieces glow in the sun! Perfect for history buffs and adventurers alike.
Absolutely amazing place! The Castelo de Morela is stunning — the views from the top are breathtaking, and you can really feel the history in every corner. There’s plenty of interesting information about what happened here during medieval times, which makes the visit even more fascinating. The castle is very well maintained, and it’s easy to imagine what life might have been like centuries ago. A must-visit if you’re in the area!
Castell de Morella is a must if you’re chasing history with jaw-dropping views. This ancient fortress, perched on a rocky hill, feels like stepping into a medieval saga. Pro tip: visit early morning when it opens at 11 AM to skip any queues—takes about 5-10 minutes max. Entry is just €5, a steal for the climb to Plaza de Armas, where you’ll snap epic photos of Morella’s red rooftops and the Els Ports mountains. It seems like a very big hill to climb to the top of the castle but it's not too bad, for someone like me who hates hills. Amazing views and information plaquards around, €3.50 entrance fee.
It's a little town on the hill, with an ancient church building, though small it's very unique worth to explore even though you may have seen many. The castle on the top is a ruine, ancient but nothing much to see. The streets in the middle of the hill are just like any other Spanish town.

Nice exhibition. Good quality fossils in great condition. My son loved the experience. However, it was a shame that there was no English translation of the exhibits. And the staff member was very unfriendly. It was obvious he had no passion to work there. Small tip: it is worth to find the dinosaur footprints outside of Morella. It was very exciting.

Lo malo el parking, tienes que aparcar a las afueras del pueblo, pues al ser amurallado y pequeño no hay plazas de parking disponibles, pero a un paso del centro tienes un parking público que solo se paga en algunas ocasiones, fuimos un sábado en noviembre y page 2 euros por casi 3 horas. En el museo te pasan un vídeo que está muy bien, poca gente visitándolo, por lo tanto lo ves en un momento. También tiene descuentos para familia numerosa, es económico.

This is lovely "Fine Dining" -quality lunch at a great "Menu del Dia" price, especially for Morella. Local ingredients and cooking styles. The refreshing Ensalada de Codornices set the tone, and the mains Timbal de Cordero and Holjadre Rellenos were both top notch. We ordered for 2 and fed 4.
The decor is classic w chunky furniture, framed photographs + a strange / unexplained interest in hook rugs (?!)
Service is warm and helpful for english speakers.

Really nice restaurant, very spacious, with a good offer to eat lunch and dinner. We chose to have the daily menu and it was enough to taste different things, like their migas or the carrillera. The desserts, chocolate mouse and lemon in our case, were also tasty. I could recommend this as a good option if you are exploring around Morella.
This is a 5-stars meal for a 3/4 stars price.
Casa Roque is located in the heart of Morella, the ambience is classical and quaint.
We had the €24 menu: 4 entrées (starters, hors d'oeuvres), a main dish and a dessert.

We went here after looking at favourable reviews only to be disappointed by the food. The staff and the atmosphere were good, the waitress explaining the menu very well as we only have limited Spanish vocabulary. We opted for meal of the day, what a disappointment. All of the courses were very bland in taste. Maybe if we’d opted to pick off the al a carte menu then we may have faired better. We were in Spain for a week and this by far was our worst meal.
Ok. Our appetizer was good, but the main course a mixed bag. My stuffed pork tasted like the instant gravy that smothered it. The curried chicken on the other hand was very good. Desserts were packaged fare. Seems like it caters to the elderly tour bus crowd and the chef phones it in. That said, the service was very friendly.
Service was great, but we were quite disappointed with the food... We ordered from the regular menu and apart from the croquetas morellanas the main dishes were subpar (lamb chops dry and overcooked, seabass too bland, and all of the mains came the the exact same sides). Maybe it’s a different story with the tasting menu, but our experience did not convince us to go back.
It is definitely a good option to try local food, very tasty and reasonably price.

The tourist information office just inside the main gate sold a combined castle/church/gatehouse/dinosaur museum ticket for €11 so we took advantage of that and then visited the Gate of St Michael. The steps inside linking each floor were very steep and there were various artifacts inside but descriptions were only in Spanish, as were the descriptions and plans of each of the city wall towers. There were impressive views from the roof although the wind was rather strong!
Fantastic historical site and the views are some of the best in Spain.

Beautifully executed food. Shared 2 starters and one main between 2 of us. Very well presented . Amuse buche along with bread and olive oil was a nice beginning. Very professional service. Menu in English was provided. Very good value for high end quality food.
The food was very good, but towards the end of the meal the service got very bad. While other diners were offered a digestif to finish off the meal, I was not offered one, and when I asked for one the waitress brushed off my request. We were then ignored for 15 minutes until we finally asked for the check. While the food was great, this experience at the end left us with a very bad impression.
Probably the best croquetas and arroz meloso with locally sourced lamb (con cordero de la zona) I’ve tried in my life!
Thoroughly enjoyed our lunch here. The carpaccio of smoked tuna was really good and the Venison sirloin was delicious. They even declined a tip as not needed
Best restaurant in the area. I will just say that once, we took a trip to Culla and made a reservation (because we had been to Morella previously and loved the restaurant and dining experience) which meant having to drive for an hour to and from. Worth it.
We always try to get a table here whenever we are staying around (even if it means driving for an hour!).

We walked back down in to the town and had lunch at Gastro Bar Sastrería. Service here was lovely and I had goats cheese on toast with something, honey and pumpkin seeds - delicious and much needed after our exertion.
Excellent food; friendly staff (also speak English), good music. We had a burger and a ham-and-cheese plate and everything was fresh, good quality and delicious.
Worst bravas from a while. Croquettes and Toast are average. Service and ambience are excellent though

We were in a group and while half of us had received their starters and dirinks the rest were still waiting to order. The drinks arrived long after the starters, for which we didn't even receive plates, so we had to eat shared salads on napkins.
The food was really bad. We ordered a lamb dish and it was mainly fat with bones. Besides, there is no vegetarian option and when I asked the waitress if they could make something simple like an omelette she rudely replies that it wasn't her problem. So, unless you are happy with cheap but rubbish food and terrible treatment, avoid this place.

Great gastro tasting menu. Very refined so not a typical rustic local restaurant (except the goat leg) but very tasty!
