The Åland Maritime Museum in Mariehamn, Finland is a captivating cultural institution that celebrates the maritime legacy of the Åland Islands. Great museum exhibition with a great variety of covered themes, from ship models to lighthouse's lights and history explanation. Tickets covers two museums, this one and the Pommern ship. A good visit would take 90-120 for both museums, or 60-90 for this one only.

Very nice meusum with interesting collection of ship and ferry...the pommern is quite interesting and good to keep in mind the last entrance to pommern is around 1pm. They have lockers and bike parks for visitors and they accept meusum card:)
I really recommend visiting this museum if you want the know more about Åland and their history. But even just if you want to know more about seafaring from their perspective. There are lots of different things to look at, to read about and you will get amazed about how much goes into the history and science of boats, cruises and seafaring.
An awesome museum detailing the seafaring past of Åland, surely a must see if visiting. The exhibits inside are very interesting, as is the full rigged ship Pommern, the main star of the museum.
Interesting and very exclusive. I could have spent more time there.

The place has 3 floors total with one underground.
There are plenty of interesting things to see and discover, including: a real pirate flag, highly detailed ship models and artifacts from the life of sailors
For children there are many interactive expositions to explore with "sea monsters" as a highlight.

The Museum ship Pommern is a well-preserved, four-masted merchant sailing ship built in 1903, located just behind the Sjofartsmuseum. It once operated on the trade route between Australia and England, carrying cargo and a crew of 26. Visitors can explore the historic vessel through guided tours and ramps, gaining insight into sailors' lives and experiencing its unique atmosphere. The ship offers audio guides in multiple languages to enhance the learning experience.
What a great experience. It makes you feel humbled and appreciate the hard work sea men did and do.
It's truly amazing how big the ship is and how much cargo they were able to hold in the old days!
On the deck of the ship you can get headphones and phone so you can listen in to the crew and what they went through.

Kinda funny when you look from the outside and thinks "it doesn't look that big" and then you get inside and realize "oh this is a big ship". They have created a route on the top layer of the ship with points where you can listen to theatrical recordings of what life on the ship could have looked like, and then on the lower parts you can see what the inside of the ships looks like. Even a small lightshow at the very bottom that illustrates a storm out on the sea. I really recommend visiting Pommern if you want the know more about Åland and their history with ships.
Excellent preserved ship from the early 20th century, easily accessible and across the maritime museum.
This is one of the best museums of sailing ships.
Probably the best ship museum in Mariehamn?
If you are in to real world sailing boats used for shipping in the early 20th century, this is for you.
Tickets can be bought online or at the ship. Don't miss the 19 minute informational movie where actual sailors that sailed the Pommern in the 1930s are interviewed.
This was a great sight to behold. They give you a pre-recorded audio of the conversations in the ship to have a feel of the sails back in the days. I got my ticket at the museum and you can use it for the two museums or visit the Pommern twice. I enjoyed touring the museum.
Very interesting attraction in Mariehamn. The same entry ticket goes for Mariehamn Maritime museum and the Pommern, definately worth the visit.
Ship and its decks are also wheelchair accessible, although cabins and some areas are not.
Worth a visit, both the maritime museum and Pommern.
Book enough time for it... an hour goes by very fast. ❤️

Service was second to none.
Indigo has three different areas -> indoor + terrace + bistro. Indoors only 'fine dining meny', terrace has both bistro and fine dining choices.
You only need to go next door for dancing and drinks at Calypso, which is in the same building.
Amazing dinner experience. Indigo restaurant (inside sitting) serves locally produced food, Scandinavian recipes with inspiration from all over the world.
The vegetarian option was wonderful, the only downside was that it didn't fill us up that much. With the food comes an appetiser of different Åland bread, butter & cream cheese, very delicious!

The restaurant is fixing so all customers take food at outdoor. It’s very hot and noisy. And maybe because of the salmon, the area was full of flyers. At the end the eating turned to a fight with flyers.
Hope soon customer can get seats indoor that could be better.
Excellent food and good service. Garlic bread as a starter was best ever and steak with bearnaise sauce was brilliant. Also very dog friendly place, you can bring your dog to terrace.

Absolutely fab for a long lunch. 💯 staff with a very pro service. Food very decent at lunchtime, a bit on the pricey side. The view with the matching wine over the bay will compensate for the sting.
My doctor suggested using glasses. I used two. The Pommern is still a bit dizzy in my eyes.. 🥴

On the food side, super big disappointment that the tasting menu can be ordered UNTIL 19:30 (in a main and popular restaurant, seriously?). Waitress did not even try to suggest anything, but « it is what it is ». Well, less money for them 🤷🏻♂️
The food we were able to get was very simple but very good, very good assemble of flavours and general dishes. A bit pricy for what it is, but probably we pay for the location as well, which is fine.
The disappointment was the service, even if friendly, not on the level of this kind of place. No suggestion, bringing dishes with no explanation, just a « here you go », opening a wine of 100e like it’s a vulgar beverage, no smile or thank you… even with a big bill. Feels like a low-budget brasserie service. Here we do not feel we have right value for money and standing of the place.
I’m sure we want to try the place again, mostly for food selection and views… but eating as early as 7pm…
Superb!!! Just keep in mind that for main dishes you have until 20:30-21:00 to place your orders as the kitchen is starting to close around that time.
Dinner with colleagues was fabulous, a mix of the the set menu of ginger and garlic prawns (scampi) followed by veal noisettes and finished with frozen yogurt, and the al la carte option of scallops, butter fried perch with vanilla ice cream. The food was delicious and the view over Pommern is outstanding. Atmosphere is calm and quiet with attentive staff. Highly recommended.
Restaurant Nautical was the perfect upscale seafood dinner my family was looking for. There are two prefix menus and an a la carte menu, all within season. Nautical accommodates gluten and lactose free allergens. The langoustine starter was really rich in flavor, I definitely recommend it.
I have been to a lot of good restaurants in the world. This is what you looking for; perfect food, nice selection of wines and beautiful atmosphere with a view. Never leave Aland island without eating here 🤤

The Pizza is customizable and there are good vegan options. We really liked the Pizza and the staff was very friendly and helpful!
Very easy to make vegan choises. Tasted great. They realised them self they had made a mistake on our order, just corrected it without telling us, came out with the correct order togheter with the "wrong" pizza in a box and just gave us complimentary. Super nice staff.
Koti pizza as usual, but the man named Ahmad is great guy, he made for us very good pizza even it was jus a minutes away from closing time. He was kind and let us finish our meal even place was about to close! Thanks, man!

All the cutlery was dirty. Some plates were dirty with stains of food. The tables were dirty.
The staff was not engaged at all and barely said a word when they came out with the food or when we ordered.

When we arrived at the place the waitress didn’t pay any attention to us. We didn’t know if we should wait for table service or if we should order inside. Maybe you should leave a note guiding your customers what to do. Also the waitress didn’t tell us anything even though she saw us sitting outside.

For day 2, we recommend exploring the center side of town. Start the day off with Badhuset Mariebad, then wind down and take it easy by the time you get to Pub Niska. All together, your day would be filled with about 8 hours of non-stop fun.

Beautiful swimming pools. There's lane swim 🏊 and water polo 🤽♂️in one 25-meters-pool. Then there's adventure swim with water slide in another pool - which is a little bit warmer. A part of the adventure pool is outside so you can lay there and watch the view of the ocean 🌊 There's also a jetty so you can swim in the ocean all year round. In winter ❄️ they make a hole in the ice. Of course there's a sauna to warm you up afterwards. Both single sex saunas and mixed sex saunas.

We were there right after the school holidays ended, so they closed the whole entertainment area with pools, jacuzzi and slides for a month of cleaning. Despite this, they still charge a full price, for which you get a 25m swimming pool (mostly unavailable since lanes were booked for the sportmen and groups), a small pool for kids and a sauna - that's it. The corridor between the pool and the sauna was cold and uncomfortable. There were no hairdryers. Probably when everything is open, it is a nice place, but our visit was not great.

The only thing that made myself and daughter uncomfortable and I'm sure it's a cultural thing, was that on entering the open plan changing room, we had to shower nude before going in the pool.
Us being from the UK, we just don't do this. We arrive in our swim suits under our clothes ready and it's also standard to have your own stall to get changed in. At no point does anyone see anyone fully nude, again I assume this is a cultural thing.
Half of the pool area was out of service — the relaxation section and the outdoor part were both closed. The only part available was the swimming pool, yet the price was the same as when the entire pool was working. It didn’t feel fair to pay full price for only part of the experience.
It was ok. The shower room was not as clean as I like (lot of hair everywhere) and the outdoor pool and the slide was closed. It's quite small but they have nice normal pool also.
The whole spa section was closed and there was neither a warning at checkour nor a discount on the price
Very good spa and swimminghall. You can both relax or/and exercise here. You can exercise on swimming courses or relax or play in different pools and water slope. You can enjoy the outside pool or even go swimming to the ocean.
Great place. 25 meter indoor pool for swimming, another for children playing, third warm for relaxing extends outdoors with view to sea. At least mens saunas are fine, but could be a little hotter (to Finnish taste).
There is also an indoor waterslide, possibility to go for a dip in the sea on summer, and small Thai restaurant in the same building.

Although the places is not that big, it tells a long history of Aland.
I saw never such old things really displaying here
they make a high quality booklet for the display items, very informative, However like all the other musume , the light is barely to look at the book,and one of the monitor showing national history was not working, still appreciate their effort
🌿 Today I visited Ålands Museum again — and every time it feels a little different.
It holds the whole history of Åland — from ancient times to everyday island life and the sea. Everything feels warm, real, and thoughtful.

I loved the soft lighting, the peaceful silence — it’s like the museum invites you to not just look, but feel.

There’s a room with moving projections — ocean waves, wind, tree branches all around you. You can just sit there and breathe. Honestly, I could stay for hours.

There’s also a small café corner with tea, coffee, little desserts and even a sink to wash your hands nearby 😊 So cozy. And the gift shop at the entrance is full of special items — not just random souvenirs, but things with the real spirit of the islands.

You don’t need to rush. You can drop by for a moment — or spend half the day. I think I’ll be back. Probably soon. 🌬
Good and important place to visit for understanding Åland history and culture.
I've visited the Åland Museum several times, including once with a group from Medis during our internship. The museum is located right in the center of Mariehamn — close to a square, shops, cafés, and the harbor. It's very easy to get to.
The first time we went, it was during a special event — the museum was hosting a celebration, and the staff were offering homemade treats and cooking on-site. The atmosphere was very warm and friendly. After that, we explored one of the exhibitions, which was fascinating — especially the section dedicated to the history of Åland and archaeological discoveries.
The museum has two main sections — cultural-historical and art — and one ticket gives you access to both. Everything is well organized: there are elevators, ramps, restrooms, and lockers. It's accessible for people with limited mobility and for strollers.
The exhibitions are curated with care — you’ll find everything from ancient artifacts to contemporary art. The only small downside is that some display cases could use more lighting, and not all interactive screens were functioning perfectly. Other than that, it’s a fantastic place, especially for those who want to learn more about Åland's culture.
There’s also a small park nearby and a parking area that fits about 10 cars. I definitely recommend it for both tourists and locals!
Very good introduction to the history of Åland - I was impressed. Entrance fee includes access to the art gallery, which I found less interesting on this occasion, but is perhaps dependent on the exhibition.

There are many things to be learnt. I loved that they have 1 of the 2 original pirate flags in the whole world! What a rarity. And definitely worth seeing.

Of all the places we ate around Mariehamn during our visit this was my absolute favorite. Such a lovely and cozy place. I ordered a chocolate and strawberry cake with whipped cream and even though it was HUGE it was so fluffy and just melted in my mouth. It was the first time it felt like I had not eaten anything because it was so light due to the fluffy cake. 10 out of 10 would recommend for anyone visiting Mariehamn.

Salted caramel cheesecake was brilliant! Åland's pancakes were excellent also. The place is really cute, definitely worth the visit.
Cosy coffee shop. Comfy chairs and sofas. Nice selection of cakes. We tried pineapple and hazelnut. Friendly service. Great hot chocolate.
An absolute favourite in Mariehamn. Be fast or it will be crowded - and the cakes gone! We also tried their version of the Åland pancakes and were very nice. The only negative note is having to wait +10 minutes for coffee :(

There was nothing from preventing me to enjoy today pizza in this place. And it was gloomi, bit windy with threads of rain. We were visiting Sjökvarteret after opening hours for rest of the places and on way back we smell really nice meal from this kitchen. Literally we were navigating ourselves here by our noses 😁. Outside was empty for obvious weatherly reasons. When we entered smiley face greeted us and rest is on place and in happy belly.

Delicious pizza, great selection of drinks and a great atmosphere! The pub is directly located next to the water and in an area that is definitely worth a stroll after dinner. Lots of space outside. Unfortunately it closed relatively early, otherwise we would have stayed a bit longer.
We stopped during our walk around Sjökvarteret and we shared the monthly pizza: white pizza with shrimps and tomatoes(they removed the forest sauce and raw onions at my request). Veey tasty pizza and friendly service.
If you are around the area it is a nice place to eat by the water. The pizzas were good and crispy. I did not like the pizza dough that much and that is why I give it 4 stars. If I recommend one, you can try the Sea Captain one (with salmon). It was quite tasty.

We came to Mariehamn for Easter holiday and one of the only open places in long Friday was Dino's bar. We liked the place, the design and the lovely food.
They just have 2 vegetarian kind of meal but it was so delicious! We also order dessert and was really good. It is not a cheap place but the prices are not so high as in other restaurants in the area.
About the service, the staff are really friendly.

Quite polite employees while you are a customer of the restaurant - if you return as "just" a guest of the bar, they don't pay much attention anymore. Even more so if you are speaking English instead of Swedish. It leaves the clear impression that they like the international guests only because of the money the leave here and prefer their

But the "Pasta Dino" was good and the beer is comparatively cheap in the happy hour.
I had a very disappointing experience at Dinos. The server who helped us was incredibly rude and seemed like they didn’t want us to be there at all. The food was bland and poorly seasoned. Definitely not a place I’ll be returning to, and I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone expecting decent service or flavorful food.

During a recent trip, I stumbled upon Nonna Rina while seeking refuge from the rain, and what a delightful surprise it turned out to be! This charming eatery boasts an impressive selection of pizzas, with the prosciutto variety standing out as exceptionally delicious. The dough was simply superb! I also indulged in a tapas plate paired with sparkling wine, which added to the overall experience.

Located at one end of the main shopping street in Mariehamn the restaurant has ample outside space but lacked parasols that are essential on warm sunny days like the day that we visited.
Operated more like a café than a restaurant with orders being taken at the bar rather than at your table - this could be problematic for those dining alone or with mobility issues.
The food was freshly made with the chef on open view which was rather nice. Good sized portions at a good price.
The most un-Italian restaurant I have ever been to. At 1900 they had run out of Pizza - and I should have run away at that point. The bolognese I went for was over-priced and tasteless and I wouldn’t have fed it to the cat. The service was ‘do it yourself’ and the atmosphere non-existent. Learn from my mistake and find somewhere else.
We ended up here by coincidence because it was raining a lot. Lovely place with nice pizza. We tried the one with prosciutto. Super tasty! the dough was excellente.

I am(was) here during the winter, December. Although the number of tourists is almost none at this time, and the sunlight hours are at the lowest, I find it really beautiful to walk here in the morning. White blankets the landscape among serene, calm, clear waters with a few swans/ducks, and warm reddish sunrise in the horizon below overcast wintry clouds. It's one of the most tranquil aesthetic wintry sceneries offered by the Nordics that gives me a hint of my time in Patagonia--a slight feeling of 'this is the end of the world', in a good sense.
Convenient place to take the kids to look at various more or less exotic bird, rabbits, peacocks etc. A sand beach with playground and pier. Possibility to swim all year round.

This is a must place to dine in and enjoy the food preparation and decoration view from your seat on top of tasty combination of food, BUT it can turn out as a bit bitter sweet experience. I have two different experiences in Kvarter5 within 24hr:
The first experience was great, it was a holiday, busy and after 9pm and we were welcomed nicely and we had an amazing chicken bowl with a seleced rosé wine. The food was brilliant apart from the service and we decided to come back for trying the petite tender steak. They open at 5pm and once we got there, we were told that it's fully booked and they could not offer a table, then after a few sec, they offered a table for 2.5hr. There was no pushing request from us. The steak was ok and we were not happy with the service at all and we were treated like we had to rush or leave (even after 1hr) or order more (we had our wine and were drinking slowly) apart from very rude behaviours (from taking the napkins out and appologies for not having it..then not bringing steak knives...plus pouring wine poorly that made a mess....I understand that they tried to accommodate us during a busy night but I believe that there are rooms for improvements in making the food experience memorable for the customers coming with an excitement:
- do not accept new custoemrs once they are NOT ready for extra services/customers
- respect customers space once they offer the table/availability
Can't give much positives about the place. Food is over complicated, too many components hiding the possible taste of the main ingredient such as the meat in carpaccio. Chicken just had no taste. Service was grumpy. And, the prices are on the high side. The drink selection is wide and cocktails are well made.
Nice dinner restaurant in Marienhamn that provides high quality food. We had pre-booked table two weeks before our trip to Åland, Finland.
We had a nice dinner here in Kvarter5. We had älgtartar (moose tartar, 18€), biffmacka (sirloin of beef on bread, 28€) and röding (arctic char, 36€, two glasses of cava (tot. 14,4€) with two additional glasses of wine total dinner costed 118€.
All foods were very good and service was very helpful and friendly. Atmosphere was very warm and sophiaticated.
They have menus available in Finnish, English and Swedish.
If you want to have a great dinne experience in Marienhamn, I can really recommend this one. Just remember to book your table before.
Easily the most original and experimental restaurant on the island, if you're looking for that åland quality but want something more original and in with the trends this is your choice.

Do not miss this place if you are in the island. Superb!
Great modern feel to this place. I visited as a large event was going on, so the staff was a bit swamped and there were lines and a bit of waiting. I doubt that is the case on a regular night. Lots of space for outdoor dining, but beware the mosquitos after dusk. Beer selection is a bit basic. The food was good and for tapas, portion sizes were large. Overall a bit too salty to my taste but fresh and crispy stuff. The toilet situation is a bit confusing as there are two completely different facilities and me and my friends waited in vain as there was another toilet building we were not made aware of, signage problem mostly. All in all a good modern locale with lots of space.
Ate here on Monday 15th September and had the perch from the lunch menu. It arrived very quickly and was dry but tasted ok, I ended up with really bad food poisoning a few hours later, I’m still ill almost a week later. I imagine it wasn’t cooked freshly and was stored at the incorrect temperature for a long time. It is easily the worst food poisoning I’ve had in Europe and compares with poisoning I’ve had in India. You really don’t expect that to happen at any restaurant in Finland…

Great food, ok prices, better then many other competitors in eu fries portion is super small ordering bigger fries only gets you 4 extra fries. Burger has to much sauce by default so if you want to taste the actual burger ask for no sauce and add it yourself. Other then that it's good food.
Its ok, kind off expensive considering it's a fast food joint but all the smaller burgers are good because they taste better than their larger meals.

I went with a schnitzel for 13 euros, which isn't cheap, but it's very well made. The size is large, it's quite thin though, but it's very juicy inside and crunchy outside. It also comes with a serving of fries, these are also good.
I've also got a plate of salads, bread and glass of water which is included in the price.
I think for the amount of food you get is quite ok. That meal will get you filled easily.
Place is clean and service was good, they didn't had a menu on English, but lovely lady at the counter helped me in figuring everything out.

We were looking for a place to dine on Åland in Mariehamn. We found Sittkoffska Gården in a small mall. We asked for fish and they offered us a forell dish. There was also an salad buffet included. Unfortunately this wasn't the best experience on Åland. Food was drained in sauce and fush was barely cooked. The rest of Åland was a great and beautiful experience
Improvements have been made in all aspects since my previous review, mostly good food, not many options but they do it mostly good. Have a pretty nice sallad buffet that is included if you order to go or dine in. Coffee/tea is also included.

Nestled in the heart of town, the Wiklof Holding Arena is a charming venue that serves as the home ground for both local soccer team IFK Mariehamn and women's team Aland United. With a capacity of 4,500, this cozy arena offers an inviting atmosphere for sports enthusiasts. The playing season runs from April to October, making it an ideal time to catch a match.
Visited for IFK v HJK. Easy admission with tickets purchased online several weeks before.
I booked a seat in the restaurant for my wife and I. 29.90 Euros for a decent two course meal, with alcoholic drinks an extra.
Limited range of souvenirs available before the game, but the staff went above and beyond to find a correct fitting shirt for my son.
The grandstand is small, but more than functional given the typical number of spectators. Comfortable seats and good sight lines.

The personnel are professional and can assist in planning routes for island hopping, including scheduling car ferries. Visitors can also post letters from the office. The community is described as fantastic, making it a very nice place to have a holiday. Additionally, there's even a skiing resort in Åland for those seeking outdoor activities.
We were here a few weeks ago and didn't have a space to store our luggage, and the staff went above and beyond to help us in finding a place to store our luggage for our day trip.

It's a small but very nice tourist office! The people were very friendly and we took a lot of info brochures along. Side note: public transport - like the bus - is usable on weekdays, but hardly in the weekend (especially on Sunday).

Good that it exists. Looks bright on the inside with ipads and stuff. Very expensive souvenirs, like hoodie at 69 eur. I asked about bus schedule and it was not very straight-forward. Eventually I had to walk 6 kms to the place, where I stayed. On Saturday in the first half of the day there was no bus to the airport direction. My host was nice to give a ride. Do not make my mistake, take a car/bike/bycycle with the ferry. The archipelago is not very meant for pedestrian tourists like me, who arrive by plane. Another words I was very dependent on the host and not flexible in my movements. Local bus service is rare and schedule in Swedish only

We came here because they have vegan food on the menu. When we wanted to order the vegan burger, the lady told us that they don't have vegan bread and offered to give us a burger without bread. I said: ok, maybe we could have some salad or fries instead for bread. We agreed and paid.
When the food arrived, it was a burger patty and cheese inside two leaves of salad. This was very unappealing and did not make us full. The worst part is that we were charged the whole price (11€ for what you see on the picture. No side, no fries). For what we got, this was expensive.
Also, it is impossible to sit inside because it is extremely hot.
Crispies-potatoes were really good, name describes them well! Burgers were also good, not too big but not too small either. Everything is made to order, so it's nicely fresh and hot.
Good place to have lunch or a later meal!
