Jardim do Paço Episcopal, also known as the Bishops palace garden, is a charming Baroque garden located in Castelo Branco, Portugal. Established in 1725, it features a delightful array of fountains, sculptures depicting historical Portuguese figures and saints, and even includes a playground for children. The garden is adjacent to the Paco Episcopal and boasts an assortment of trees, five lakes, and a grand staircase.
We really had awful weather (storm) but even with the rain I can say it's worth to see! Beautiful place, thanks to the storm we were alone there we had time to see everything 😅 Amazing oranges, beautiful sculptures and fountains make a great atmosphere... 3€ for entrance is ok price.

Pretty place, really interesting in some parts. Worth visiting, tho I was intimidated by the staff a little
Rozalia S — Google review
Very beautiful and interesting gardens. Well worth a visit. Maybe not for children, but the park across the road definitely is. They are small gardens with many steps. I've never seen a similar garden with so many statues.

This is how to look after a garden. Beautiful water features very well put together with flowers and pruned foliage. Statues for days and more water features. All this for 2 euros an adult....get in. Worth if for the photos alone. The public park opposite is a gem too.
David O — Google review
A truly wonderful park. Well kept, colorful, wide space, lovely natural and man-made decoration. A playground area for children, a cafe makes of it a good meeting place, and then woods area offers good shade from the harsher sun.
Nelson D — Google review
A pretty garden with small fountain and lakes with an abundance of statues. It is located at the back of the old palace that served as the residence of several bishops of Guarda and later those of Castelo Branco. The statues are representing many figures, from kings and bishops to the symbol of each month or elements like fire. It is also adjacent to the Francisco Tavares Proença Júnior Museum which was the residence of the bishops. I recommend visiting this lovely park to everyone. The explanations are in Portuguese and also in English. Opening Hours: April to September: 09h00-19h00;October to March 09h00-17h00. Entrance fee: 2€.
Maryam K — Google review
A beautiful place in Castelo Branco! This was the third time I went to the city and I can say I regret not going earlier to this amazing garden! The place itself is not that big, we are not talking about a huge park here, but rather a cozy and really beautiful small garden. What I found interesting about this place is the mix between the green and the statues. You can go and try to find what's written under the statues as a fun way to explore the place. Onde suggestion though would be to change the font under the statues, it looks way to much modern compared to the place history, I would rather see a hand drawn label than something that looks like an A4 printed at home. Apart from that, the place is totally worth going and amazing to take pictures. You only have to pay 2€ to get in but its worth it! A nice day trip to Castelo Branco.

Specialty Museums
The Museu Cargaleiro is an exceptional institution that showcases changing art exhibits and houses the collection of renowned artist Manuel Cargaleiro. It occupies two distinct buildings, a historical 18th-century residence on Knights Street and a contrasting modern structure. The museum boasts an impressive array of ceramic tableware for those interested in the history of ceramics. The Cargaleiro section within the museum features a vast assortment of his artistic creations, alongside remarkable pieces by internationally acclaimed ceramic artists.
An interesting collection of the works of the contemporary artist Manuel Cargaleiro, including ceramics and painting. The museum is constituted of two buildings, historic and contemporary. In the historic building mainly exhibits the ceramics, divided in to different rooms based on the patterns. Besides, the library and the shop are also in this building. Meawhile, the contemporary building hosts the artist's paintings, contemporary ceramics. The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday 10AM–1PM, 2–6PM. (The historic building dates back to the 18th century and it was named "Solar dos Cavaleiros". This building was a place to shelter lonely women with rough life stories and also for unwanted children. There is the remaining of a window at the reception of the museum where in the past the parents of the unwanted child used to leave their baby and a person from inside the house will take the baby. the structure of that window was designed in a way that people from the inside would not see the person who left the baby, to protect their identity)

Museum holds exhibitions of wonderful artwork. Definately inspiring, well maintained and really affordable. We spent a great time there and staff was super nice and helpful
Rozalia S — Google review
Really nice museum with mainly ceramic exhibits and some artwork from Manuel Cargalheiro, for national students it’s free to visit
Herco C — Google review
A very neat clean gallery devoted primarily to the work of Cargaleiro. Personally I was very disappointed as I felt that the majority of the "art" could have been created by a 3 year old using the non dominant hand. If this is what sells then I should become an artist and retire. There was also an exhibition of some glazed pottery items.
Melville ( — Google review
Great museum. It shows many great pieces by the master painter and potter Cargaleiro as well as some other pieces of his collection by other artists.

If you have any interest in the history of ceramics the museum has a fine selection of tableware. Castelo Branco Castle, perched on a hill above the city, is not actually white despite its name. The stone fortress offers a glimpse into history with one remaining tower and sections of walls. Although not Portugal's most impressive castle, the site rewards visitors with stunning views, including a conical hill crowned by Ermida de Sao Martinho to the Southeast. Built in the 12th century under King Afonso II's orders, only remnants of the medieval structure remain today.
Free access. Beautiful sunset. Walked up from our Airbnb by foot. Could drive but very narrow streets will almost literally take you through people’s living rooms.

Restaurant
Retiro do Caçador is a charming restaurant in Castelo Branco, known for its focus on game dishes and traditional regional recipes. The cozy establishment offers complete meals at a great value, including soup, main course, drink, and coffee. Guests praise the varied and delicious menu options as well as the friendly staff. The restaurant's menu of the day, featuring dessert and coffee for an affordable price, has received high praise for its homemade quality.
Incredible 3 course lunch with olives and bread, wine and coffee for €12 each. Highly recommended are the wild boar casserole and the mixed pork.
Mark H — Google review
Really enjoyed our meals- turkey stew and mixed pork grill. Staff were lovely. For 12€ you get soup, main, dessert a drink and coffee. Great value!
Andrew S — Google review
We went for dinner, we both had the alheira. The alheira was a bit greasy but the fries and the rice were tasty. I also had the desert, pudim flan. Was a bit insipid, but asked without sugar coat, so maybe was because of that. The owners were very friendly! It was nice to contribute a bit for keeping the place open. Would return again
Antonieta L — Google review
Small family run restaurant with the best traditional dishes of the area. Very well served, very well priced, deserts and espresso available as well. Recommend the wild boar stew or ribs with a pitcher of house wine! Can't go wrong. Every time I'm in Portugal we stop in for lunch, lovely owners.
PhiL V — Google review
Four of us visited last week, twice, as it was so good the first time. An earlier review complains that his meal coast €12. Mine did, and was a massive plate of gorgeous veal, with rice, chips and a few bits of salad. Delicious and good value. The Wild Boar stew is also great.
Two B — Google review
Looks like a popular restaurant in town. Good meal I had here. I had carrot soup and wild boar stew .. it was very nice and served really well. Not expensive. The stew was provided with rice and fries .. (🫤 fries everywhere). A restaurant that calls himself "typical food" shouldn't serve food with fries .. that's my take. Stew with fries 🤷‍♂️. For dessert i had the classic "arroz doce" - also super generous (sweet rice). Anyways was good and recommend. Special shout out to the staf: very friendly and familiar atmosphere.

Restaurant Mãos de Horta is a charming and welcoming place with a calm ambiance, offering fantastic service and superb vegetarian food. The menu consists of tasting options to be savored without rush. The restaurant has a historical and quirky atmosphere with artistic decor, creating a delightful dining experience. The dishes are made from ingredients available in their garden at the time, ensuring a varied menu that caters to both vegetarians and carnivores.
Excellent experience!! Total 3 of us went today without reservation. Luckily they were able to serve us also. Probably one of the best meals we have in Portugal! Nice vibe, music, and food presentation is definitely 5 star! Our waiter has been really helpful. Well worth it!!
Chunju W — Google review
Best restaurant in Castelo Branco, for sure. High energy local seasonal food from nearby farm, ASTONISHING outside & inside areas, and extremely friendly staff. Gluten-free vegetarian in Castelo Branco😅
M M — Google review
The place is beautiful and the concept is great, but sadly it was a bad experience. We waited almost one hour for the main dish, there was no warning or communication about the delay. And unfortunately what arrived was just not good, way too salty, the pasta had apparently run out and was replaced with glass noodles which made the texture very sloppy. There were only two other tables occupied, and they also seemed to wait a long time. Perhaps there was staff shortages in the kitchen, the other reviews seem positive, but our experience was negative.
Isabelle — Google review
What a beautiful restaurant! So happy to have found this place. The decor and atmosphere are wonderful, excellent service and such delicious food, really enjoyed the chefs menu of the day concept. Will certainly be returning when we are in the area again. Highly recommend 👌🏼
Jen A — Google review
A delight. The place is historical and quirky with artefacts and modern bits and pieces put together artistically. The food is made from what is available in their garden at the time, so the menu is varied. It is a vegetarian restaurant but with enough flavour and interesting food to make carnivores happy too. It is well priced for the unusual yet delicious fayre, though the meals are not large. It feels like a nice healthy treat and the waiting on staff are polite yet chatty, making the whole experience perfect. I will return. Well done this place 😊
Bev M — Google review
Beautiful restaurant with great vegetarian food. Every day the chef cooks a dish depending on what vegetables are available from the farm. So there is an element of surprise there that we loved. In addition to that great service and very affordable price. We went for lunch twice during our stay. Definitely recommend!
Irina M — Google review
It is a place to enjoy the food and the friendliness of the staff. We spoke to Eliza who was very friendly and advised us well about available options. The dishes are delicious and the place, although hidden, has its charm being inside the restaurant! Without a doubt, a place to go and enjoy the vegetarian food! Great attention and good food and all very well priced.
Feliz P — Google review
Very good vegetarian experience. The restaurant does not have a regular menu since it will cook what comes from its farm, thus avoiding food waste and serving fresh local food with sustainability in mind. The dishes are beautifully arranged and the food is very tasty. The atmosphere of the restaurant is warm and pleasant. There's a corner with a fireplace. Definitely worthwhile!
