Jardim do Paço Episcopal, also known as the Bishops palace garden, is a charming Baroque garden located in Castelo Branco, Portugal. Established in 1725, it features a delightful array of fountains, sculptures depicting historical Portuguese figures and saints, and even includes a playground for children. The garden is adjacent to the Paco Episcopal and boasts an assortment of trees, five lakes, and a grand staircase.
We really had awful weather (storm) but even with the rain I can say it's worth to see! Beautiful place, thanks to the storm we were alone there we had time to see everything 😅 Amazing oranges, beautiful sculptures and fountains make a great atmosphere... 3€ for entrance is ok price.

Very beautiful and interesting gardens. Well worth a visit. Maybe not for children, but the park across the road definitely is. They are small gardens with many steps. I've never seen a similar garden with so many statues.

We arrived after a long drive to Castelo Branco. My wife has previously checked the on line reviews and wanted to visit these amazing gardens a long ish walk from the hotel, we arrived not to be disappointed.

This is how to look after a garden. Beautiful water features very well put together with flowers and pruned foliage. Statues for days and more water features. All this for 2 euros an adult....get in. Worth if for the photos alone. The public park opposite is a gem too.
David O — Google review
A truly wonderful park. Well kept, colorful, wide space, lovely natural and man-made decoration. A playground area for children, a cafe makes of it a good meeting place, and then woods area offers good shade from the harsher sun.
Nelson D — Google review
A pretty garden with small fountain and lakes with an abundance of statues. It is located at the back of the old palace that served as the residence of several bishops of Guarda and later those of Castelo Branco. The statues are representing many figures, from kings and bishops to the symbol of each month or elements like fire. It is also adjacent to the Francisco Tavares Proença Júnior Museum which was the residence of the bishops. I recommend visiting this lovely park to everyone. The explanations are in Portuguese and also in English. Opening Hours: April to September: 09h00-19h00;October to March 09h00-17h00. Entrance fee: 2€.

Castelo Branco Castle, perched on a hill above the city, is not actually white despite its name. The stone fortress offers a glimpse into history with one remaining tower and sections of walls. Although not Portugal's most impressive castle, the site rewards visitors with stunning views, including a conical hill crowned by Ermida de Sao Martinho to the Southeast. Built in the 12th century under King Afonso II's orders, only remnants of the medieval structure remain today.
Free access. Beautiful sunset. Walked up from our Airbnb by foot. Could drive but very narrow streets will almost literally take you through people’s living rooms.

The Museu Francisco Tavares Proença Jr. is housed in the former Episcopal Palace and serves as a museum that showcases archaeological discoveries from the Beira Baixa region. The long-standing institution offers an exceptional exhibition of local artifacts, with a particular emphasis on the unique bedspreads from Castelo Branco. The museum's collection features various examples of these traditional textiles, providing visitors with a comprehensive insight into the cultural heritage of the area.
The museum used to be the residence of the bishops in the 18th century and is connected to the Garden of the Episcopal Palace. The first part of the museum exhibits the archeological excavations which dates back to the 16th century. The rest of the exhibition is mainly dedicated to the examples of embroidery created in Castelo Branco, including carpets, dresses and other types of artifacts. In a few of the rooms there are paintings with religious themes as well as the portraits of bishops. The staff were super friendly and would gladly explain any question about the museum, if asked. Opening time: Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm and from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm. Entrance: €3, and for students and seniors €1.5

(Translated by Google) Museum based on the archaeological collection assembled by Francisco Tavares de Proença. This man, who was born in the 19th century and died prematurely at the age of 33 in Switzerland, belonged to an important family that owned a large estate in Castelo Branco. This museum also has sacred art - it is housed in a palace that was the residence of bishops (episcopal palace) - as well as textile art, namely the famous Castelo Branco quilts (from the 18th and 19th centuries). Also noteworthy is an imposing 18th-century iron safe, where collected taxes were kept. It is well worth a visit.

We arrived at 12:40, they said we could see it but that we had 20 minutes and every 5 minutes we were pressured to move forward and leave because it closes at 1 pm, and they have to have lunch and set alarms and so on 😞 unfortunately these are the people who keep us away from culture! A building that had 3 professionals, was empty, managed to put 5 people out, with so much pressure! We are very sorry. The Museu Cargaleiro is an exceptional institution that showcases changing art exhibits and houses the collection of renowned artist Manuel Cargaleiro. It occupies two distinct buildings, a historical 18th-century residence on Knights Street and a contrasting modern structure. The museum boasts an impressive array of ceramic tableware for those interested in the history of ceramics. The Cargaleiro section within the museum features a vast assortment of his artistic creations, alongside remarkable pieces by internationally acclaimed ceramic artists.
An interesting collection of the works of the contemporary artist Manuel Cargaleiro, including ceramics and painting. The museum is constituted of two buildings, historic and contemporary. In the historic building mainly exhibits the ceramics, divided in to different rooms based on the patterns. Besides, the library and the shop are also in this building. Meawhile, the contemporary building hosts the artist's paintings, contemporary ceramics. The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday 10AM–1PM, 2–6PM. (The historic building dates back to the 18th century and it was named "Solar dos Cavaleiros". This building was a place to shelter lonely women with rough life stories and also for unwanted children. There is the remaining of a window at the reception of the museum where in the past the parents of the unwanted child used to leave their baby and a person from inside the house will take the baby. the structure of that window was designed in a way that people from the inside would not see the person who left the baby, to protect their identity)

Rozalia S — Google review
Really nice museum with mainly ceramic exhibits and some artwork from Manuel Cargalheiro, for national students it’s free to visit
Herco C — Google review
A very neat clean gallery devoted primarily to the work of Cargaleiro. Personally I was very disappointed as I felt that the majority of the "art" could have been created by a 3 year old using the non dominant hand. If this is what sells then I should become an artist and retire. There was also an exhibition of some glazed pottery items.

Park
Parque da Cidade is the municipal park of Castelo Branco, situated in front of the Francisco Tavares Proenca Junior Museum. This free-to-enter park offers a tranquil oasis with numerous water features and fountains, making it a popular spot for locals to relax and enjoy. The well-maintained park provides ample seating areas for people-watching and leisurely strolls. Visitors can admire the view of the castle, especially enchanting when illuminated at night.
This place is where the locals come to amuse themselves. It never seems to get mentioned in the guides, and I think most people believe it to be part of the castle gardens that you have to pay to get into. But this place is free to everyone. The park itself is a good size with plenty of places to sit down and do a bit of people watching. There seems to be a bit of an obsession with water features here, I counted 7 different places where water was either gushing, spurting or just lapping about. There is a children's jungle gym type of thing tucked away at one side fairly close to the obligatory Café, which is next to the mandatory water feature about halfway down the park. If you venture past the Café, you come to a wooded area where there are picnic benches and more water features. Oftentimes the locals come here for kids' birthdays and the like. Generally, the place is peaceful and clean. I often see work crews here maintaining the flower beds and grass. If you want a free garden to come and sit in among the locals and away from the tourists, this is the place to be.

Always a lovely place to visit. The pool is clean, easily accesisble, with plenty of parking. The restaurant is busy, so if you can take a picnic, it is recommended. Alternatively, eat outside of peak periods. I really wanted to rate Cabra Preta with a 5, as the cod was delicious and my previous experience there was very positive. However, the pork cheeks were somewhat tough and I found that the roasted potatoes weren't fully cooked, which ultimately affected my overall opinion. The staff was friendly, but I did notice some disorganization within the restaurant. On a different occasion, I visited for Sunday lunch and was pleased with the warm welcome from their friendly staff.
Great local dishes. The Deer stew was amazing. The desert was also from local recipe. Topped off with the homemade sweet liqeur on-the-house. Doesn’t get much better.

We loved this restaurant, serving traditional dishes. The plates are well presented and the food is very tasty, with well balanced flavours. We liked the white house wine, sweet and fresh. The service was effective and attentive. The extractor fan above the dining tables is a bit odd and we felt a fresh breeze coming from there. Highly recommended in Castelo Branco.

Great atmosphere, friendly service. Food is great and portions are very generous. Prices are quite fair. Food is typical Portuguese. Their deee stew was very tasty, with a tender meat and a nice flavor. Great option to go if you are nearby.

Beautiful restaurant, the food is locally sourced and clearly very fresh. Prices are fair, an amazing value for money. Make sure you try the liquor offered in the end - and if the owner tells you what’s made of, make sure to come back here and let me know 😉

Came here for a Sunday lunch and was happy by the warm welcome of the friendly staff. Plate of braised beef and 1/2 plate of cod fish were plentiful—after having the customary olives (very bitter) and platter of cold cuts (exceptional)! Would come back again to this restaurant.

Bar Boutique do Presunto is a delightful spot that captures the essence of local cuisine, making it an ideal choice for lunch. This charming establishment offers a fantastic selection of sandwiches and toasts, all featuring exquisite local hams and cheeses crafted into unique creations. Attached to the café is a delicatessen that showcases an impressive array of products sourced directly from the family-owned property, including cured meats, wines, sweets, nuts, and fresh fruits.
Great selection and customer service. We went there for getting a piece of Presunto and were directly served at the cheese and meat counter, including tasting. Friendly and humorous staff.

AVOID AVOID!!!!!!! Just go there if you love salt 🧂 23-jan-2022 Sunday the waiters are good and friendly but the food was horrible!!!! We ordered 2 bifana with cheese and ham, and French fries, French fries was good but the bifana was way more salty 🧂 that I didn't eat that much salt In my life, I told the waiter that the food is too much salty but he did nothing, worst bifana I've ever had in my life. .

We are smoked ham fans, so we had to try this place. It was a terrible disappointment... We had the mixed board. The cheese was nice, but the smoked ham was the worst I had in all my life... it tasted like regular ham... It is a waste to sell such a bad smoked ham on a place that also has a front to sell cold meats and advertises on smoked ham... that has smoked ham on its name... The service was nice, both waiters were friendly. The bread was very fresh

We just left the restaurant and it was so lovely that I immediately felt compelled to write this review. Eveything was simply perfect, lovely starters, delicious main dishes, and an exquisite dessert. I must also tip my hat off to the wonderful staff that works in this restaurant, they made the evening all the more enjoyable. If you're nearby please do yourself a favour and drop by, I can promise you won't regret it.✨

For starters we had a plate of nachos, guacamole, truffle butter, olives, bread and a dish of mushrooms, everything was delicious. For mains we ordered 300 grams of rib eye steak which was served in a very special way but was a little dry on the edges but was tasty and tender in the centre. The meal comes with fries and vegetables. For dessert we had a peanut pie with a touch of salt which was excellent.

Amazing food and service. The food portions are very generous and the quality was absolutely excellent. The wine list offers a vast diversity of choices and has options for everyone. The vibe is very cozy and soothing. An other important point is that fact the menu clearly indicates all allergens for every dish. I will definitely be coming back. Thank you very much for a such a great experience.

We dropped in unexpectedly on a Saturday night and were lucky enough to get the only unbooked table. This place is VERY busy and it’s easy to see why! The food was exceptionally good and the service very friendly and the little touches like truffle butter and warm homemade bread elevated it from the usual restaurant. The only downside was the very bright lighting and the strong tasting swordfish - everything else was perfection. Will definitely return if I’m in the area again.

Cruzeiro de Castelo Branco, also known as Cruzeiro de São João, is a granite cross located on Largo de Sao Joao. Gabriel V — Google review
I have been to this place a fair few times as I live in the city of Castelo Branco. It's free to get in, which is one of the reasons I have been there multiple times, plus it is on the route of one of my evening walks. I don't really understand the point of this park, it really is just a pile of rocks just like the rest of the region. Except that here they have built some walkways and viewing platforms to help you get about. They have also built a rather odd tunnel and a large teepee thing out of slatted wood. The reason for the former escapes me completely. Frankly, it feels more like a place for people who would like to go mountaineering, but they are scared of heights. You are never more than a few metres above the ground here even on the highest platform. In fact, I would venture to say that the highest place is actually the slides in the kids' play area. The place does offer some impressive views of the local landscape including the castle the city is named after. I generally view the place as a good site for a bit of a low-level workout, as here you are permitted to climb over pretty much any rock formation you fancy. All over the place there are signs giving some pretty tenuous reasons to take an interest in the collection of boulders you are walking over. They are written in both Portuguese and English. Something that is not written in English, is the emergency escape instructions and route. I will let you come up with your own reasons for that one. If you are in Castelo Branco and have a couple of hours to spare and fancy clambering over some low-level boulders, then give this place a visit. After all, it is free to do. And it really is the main reason to go. That and you will get to see some good views of the area.
