Audley End House and Gardens is an impressive English Heritage Jacobean mansion set in Capability Brown-designed gardens. Originally built on a grand scale by the first Earl of Suffolk, it later became a royal palace when purchased by Charles II. Lavishly decorated rooms showcase silverware, priceless furniture, and paintings, making it one of England's grandest country homes. The estate also features a fine landscaped park designed by Lancelot 'Capability' Brown.
VISIT DATE: SAT 16/08/2025 VISIT TIME: 13:45 - 18:00 Visited with my 6 year old daughter and my Mum, but didn’t arrive till the afternoon, which was a shame as there is so much to see. I have been to Audley End in the past, but it has been a long time, so I couldn’t remember much of the site. The house itself is lovely, full of wonderful paintings and objects of interest, through less so foot a 6-year old, with the exception of the nursery which features clothes to dress up in and toys and games that would have been played by the children of the house. My daughter was disappointed to find she is too big to ride the rocking horse, but she enjoyed stroking its mane. Outside there is a beautiful parterre garden and lovely grounds to explore, featuring lots of accessible paths, with tree lined sections and hidden gems around the lake. There is a service wing next to the main house, which has a lovely cafe for visitors (and toilets, including accessible ones), as well as the main shop and visitor centre. A short walk away you will find the stable block, which has interesting exhibitions to look at, as well as the children’s shop (where you can collect your English Heritage pop badge), then you can walk through the kitchen gardens, which were full of flowers, fruit and vegetables at the time of our visit, making it an absolute delight to see. You can also then go to the court yard play area, where there is another, smaller cafe and more toilets. There are generally activities for children to take part in on the lawn, but as we visited during the summer holidays we were also able to take part in the Taskmaster games which were being held at a number of EH sites during the summer of 2025. This provided an extra level of fun. Overall, Audley End House and Gardens is a fantastic place to visit, especially in the summer. There were a good number of visitors, but it never felt crowded and we were able toto move around the house and grounds at our leisure. I would definitely recommend visiting and suggest you get there earlier to really make the most of your visit. Free entry for EH members, £22 for adults.

A wonderful historic property - so much to see. The staff were amazing, so knowledgeable and they really enjoyed talking about the history of the property - if you love history then this is an absolute must. Fantastic food at the cafe too. To fully enjoy the house and estate you would need all day. An absolute gem ❤️

Great day out for the family. The house is well maintained and there are nice collections to see. The gardens are well kept and huge. There is just one more little hidden treasure around each corner just when you thought you saw it all. Well worthy the visit. There is also a cafe and a shop. We enjoyed the performance from English heritage on “ferries”. Loved it!
Petya I — Google review
Lovely historic house looked after by English Heritage. Lots of rooms to see inside and very friendly helpful volunteers. They are great to talk to and share so much other interesting information about the house. Outside the gardens were beautiful and lovely large lawn beside lake. The old vegetable garden was also lovely as were the stables. Worth going to stables first of all which are near to the car park and tells you the story of the house before you visit it. Large tearooms to visit with good selection of snacks, meals and treats. Definitely worth a visit.
Craig K — Google review
Although the facilities outside the mansion are generally well-preserved, the mansion itself is very bright and beautiful, making you imagine that people still lived there. The owner of the mansion has very special tastes, and you can see that the decoration inside is different from other British mansions. The most impressive thing is the tall and magnificent wooden carving wall in the reception hall. In addition, you will see some sea monsters and ocean-related icons in the reception room on the second floor. The tour guide said that this is because the owner of the mansion was a big shot in the navy. The mansion facilities are very beautiful and well-maintained. It takes about an hour to walk through.
Zen C — Google review
I really enjoyed my visit!!! The house is stunning inside, with lots of interesting rooms and stories, and the staff were friendly and helpful. The gardens are beautiful and perfect for a walk – peaceful, well-kept, and full of charm. There’s also plenty of space for kids to run around, which makes it a nice family day out. I’d definitely recommend it if you’re looking for somewhere relaxing but also full of history.
Hojae L — Google review
Our visit was perfect. The house was a real highlight. It felt like being in one of Jane Austin books. I loved the vast space and well kept grounds. It was time well spent and my children enjoyed it too. It's great place for family visit. Highly recommend.
Kasia K — Google review
A breath taking experience. Just driving Into the grounds and seeing the spectacular remains of the house and gardens made me think the trip was worthwhile. I have now been lucky to visit 4 English Heritage sites, and this was the best so far. Helpful guides everywhere, especially Joanne, who was in one of the libraries and gave more info on the temple of Concorde?that was raised to celebrate the kings return to good health, and a newbie, only on her 3rd shift who was able to give me lots of info about the temple of victory. The preservation and variety of rooms and exhibits truly showed the history and the wealth of some of the residents. 2 excellent cafes, one in the outbuildings connected to the main house and another near the beautiful stables and children's playground. A must must be seen for all the family, plenty of activities for kids and adults alike. Plenty of parking and seating areas.

The main season runs from Easter to September, with special events during Halloween and Christmas. The estate's lush woodland offers a magical journey aboard steam trains or diesel engines, surrounded by majestic trees and abundant wildlife.
Excellent day out!! The playground was phenomenal so many levels and activities. The train was great. Storybook displays throughout the ride. The hunt for all the different fairies was so much fun. Our girls were 6 and 3 when we went and they loved it.

Went there today with our daughter and granddaughter. Spent five hours there and wasn’t bored once. The time sped by, and we still didn’t see everything. All the staff were very friendly and chatty and made a big fuss of our granddaughter, who is 6. It is without a doubt one of the best places I’ve ever visited of its kind and is definitely the best value. Absolutely brilliant, and we all thought so
Phil C — Google review
Wonderful family experience. Loved the train ride. We went as a group of 10 . Lovely grounds to explore. Great children's Playground. Picnic area. Lots of food options. We had pizza which was really good. I would really recommend this day out for families with young children.

Lovely day out with the kids vibe. Lots of activities, fun walks to see the fairies Train ride could be more fun or to allow children to go on it more than once maybe. Limited food options but good quality. Definitely recommend coming once, it’s a beautiful place and you can bring your own picnics

A wonderful, magical place to visit with young children! From the super cute train ride, spotting teddy bears to the brilliant adventure playground and discovering fairy houses in the woodland, this is a special place that delights the little ones and the grown ups.

Saffron Hall is a world-class concert hall located in a charming town. It offers top-notch performances and events, including concerts and theater productions. The venue provides excellent sound quality and ample parking, with a cozy bar for refreshments. While some visitors found the seating uncomfortable and noted limited toilet capacity, others praised its well-equipped facilities and friendly staff. Saffron Hall attracts renowned musicians from various genres, making it a first-class venue for music enthusiasts.
This is the favourite venue of my friend's and I because of the proximity to our city, Cambridge, they bring the best orchestras, is a bigger stage than what we have at home, the acoustics are really good and the organisation of the place is top notch. My friends are more knowledgeable about the qualities I have described since two of them are piano teachers and another one is an advanced piano student. All of them love the venue. About myself, I am in my 3rd year of piano and am in my 2 year of singing and love the place too. The only thing I would like to see improvement is the exit of the car park. It would be nice to have another extra exit.

This is fantastic venue, I came here for a school concert, the acoustics are great, the seating is comfortable and well laid out, the staff are helpful and the bar is well stocked and service is quick even with a full venue. I would highly recommend. There is ample, free parking, at busier times, you just may have to walk around the school to get a place. It's a 10-15 minute walk from Saffron Walden town.
Ian B — Google review
A fantastic venue, very clean, easy to find. Good toilets, seats are comfy, not much leg room near the glass barrier on the top but other than that it was great. Bar was very expensive, 5.50 for half a pint of cider. Other than that it was excellent.
Laura — Google review
We love this venue. Really eclectic mix of good music. Extremely comfortable seats and amazing acoustics. Don't go expecting a mega atmosphere, but if chilling out and listening to some great acts in a relaxed concert hall is your thing then I highly recommend.
James M — Google review
Travelled over 35 miles to the venue and it didn’t disappoint. We needed a disability parking space and there were plenty. We had such a warm welcome from the steward, who genuinely seemed pleased to see us. The facilities were great as was the hall and our seats - plenty of leg room and comfy seats. In addition Eddi Reader was brilliant.
Christine T — Google review
Welcoming, well run music venue. My first time to Tenebrae concert- fab! Refreshments comprise coffee/tea and modest bar with savoury snacks and cake on offer. No hot snacks available. Plentiful parking.
Vanessa Y — Google review
Plenty of parking, well signposted, amazing facility within a High School. Helpful stewarding volunteers, bar, stalls and help desk. The stage is large and all seats have a great view of the action on stage. I will be coming back regularly.
Barbara G — Google review
Very good concert venue. Clean, modern, good acoustics. I don’t think any seats would be restricted in vision or have a reduced sound quality. Accessible, good facilities, bar, parking. Super.

Bridge End Garden, located in Saffron Walden, Essex, is a charming Victorian garden with a full-sized hedge maze. Visitors can explore the grounds and discover the ruins of the Norman castle at Saffron Walden Museum. The town also offers attractions such as St Mary the Virgin parish church, Fry Art Gallery showcasing works by Edward Bawden & Eric Ravilious, and an ancient turf labyrinth on the Common.
So glad we travelled an hour to visit this lovely garden. We particularly enjoyed the Dutch Garden and the maze (even though we're all adults!) and loved that there were viewing platforms. Will definitely come back on a nice summer's day.

Bridge End Garden is a hidden gem in Saffron Walden—beautifully maintained, peaceful, and full of charm. The mix of formal gardens, hedge mazes, and quiet corners makes it perfect for a relaxing stroll or a quiet moment to unwind. A lovely place to visit for all ages, especially on a sunny day. Highly recommended for locals and visitors alike!

What a beautiful garden. We stumbled across this by chance. We were wandering around Saffron Walden looking at all the architecture and found this gem. Absolutely charming and gorgeous gardens with a maze. Lots to explore, quiet areas to sit and chill or read. Definitely visiting here again.
Tracey S — Google review
A fantastic hidden gem of a place, make sure you find it and enjoy exploring it, covers formal gardening, walled gardening and has a maze. It's well established and well kept. There are a number of entrances the quicky one is a little alley between the houses. There are grass areas for a picnic, and a few benches dotted around to sit and enjoy the garden. There are no rest rooms, the nearest ones are in the museum or in the town. Enjoy exploring!
Nicholas T — Google review
Lovely garden with a nice maze, a brand new playground, and a free gallery. There're also a wide range of restaurants nearby.
Jing X — Google review
Great public gardens (free). Masses of anemones and scillas at this time of year. Several different 'gardens'. Many places to sit, and a large grass area for kids to play. There is also a maze, though this doesn't open until April.

Plenty to look at glass houses, rose garden, nice space for young children to run about, dogs on leads also welcome. The Eight Bells is a charming 16th-century half-timbered pub located in Saffron Walden. It features period decor, a beer garden, and offers a cosmopolitan menu. The pub has an interesting history, as it is owned by Simon Day, who was part of the same school gang as Jamie Oliver and Jimmy Doherty. The menu offers delicious food with changing options, and the ox cheek comes highly recommended.
We visited the Eight Bells for a wedding reception. All staff were excellent in looking after us, the buffet was delicious and drinks were flowing. A lovely wedding reception We have also previously had lunch here, food was delicious and waiting staff attentive but not intrusive.

We popped in on spec for a quick lunch. Despite it being busy we were found a table and served the starters we wanted really quickly (weren't that hungry on the day). All the food and drink was delicious and the staff were wonderfully attentive. Full marks, will be back again soon!
Marcus P — Google review
Had a great last minute visit to the eight bells yesterday and was really impressed - the barn was an amazing location to dine and really well decorated. Wasn't expecting that from the outside. Our server was very friendly too. Portions were of a good size and great quality, we opted for the fish and chips and enjoyed having fish and chip style chips rather than the usual thick cut ones you tend to get in pubs. 10% service charge added automatically to the bill. AMEX accepted.

Amazing place. Good service and great food. Atmosphere is very cozy and welcoming. Defintely will come back when we have a chance

We had a great dinner at the eight bells restaurant. We were warm welcomed. The meals were freshly made and tasty! The alcohol free beer was great, too. Clean and cosy atmosphere. Fair price for a meal with high-quality ingredients! We will come back, surely 😁👍🏻

We had a delicious lunch, good price. Nice beer selection. I think they are a bit under staffed? The young servers are lovely and work hard but maybe more needed.

Total waste of time, had a table booked for 2pm , 2:30 we were finally shown to a table , a further 20 mins past and still no service, a couple next to us mentioned they waited an hour before they received the first course and commented tjat it wasnt worth the wait and that the food was avera6 for the prices they charge uld expect more... so we left and went to the green man whete we were greeted with a much more friendly service and got served in good time..never to return ..

Last minute stop in as plans changed on Sunday evening. They were friendly and accommodated us quickly. The menu was a great selection, and if it was so late, we would have had a few starters, as they looked amazing. I had the lamb shank with was falling off the bone, pink in colour (perfection), and incredibly flavourful. With well seasoned mash. FYI....no veg. Partner had the chicken shish. Again, the chicken was cooked perfectly with a great flavour. Cousin cous was cooked and seasoned well with a tomato base and an array of veg and some flat breads. We decided to have dessert and as they came out, they looked so good started eating it and remembered to take a picture after.....sorry. They have a really lovely courtyard section and a good music selection on in the background. Overall, I would highly recommend a visit staff friendly, food tasty and decore inside with sparkly( which I loved). Would recommend a visit. No direct parking just so you know.

Was there for New years Eve. I've been many times before the food is impeccable, the service second to none. Such a varied menu that would suit anyone. Great job team, keep up the awesome work. I'd definitely rate this as one of the best, if not the best, in Safron Walden
Chris M — Google review
Very Disappointed I had high expectations for this restaurant, but I was left extremely disappointed and unpleasantly surprised. The food was simply inedible. I ordered the mixed kebab, and everything was incredibly salty just overwhelmingly so. The service was practically nonexistent. My friends ordered the salmon with prawns, and both were badly overcooked and dry. They were shocked by the quality it had no real flavor and was nothing like what we expected. Overall, I’m very, very dissatisfied.

Great St Mary's is a 15th-century church located in Cambridge, offering stunning panoramic views of the city's renowned colleges from its tower. The church faces Kings College and features attractive shops on Kings Parade. Notable attractions include 18th-century galleries and a tall bell tower that provides superb panoramic views of the city center. King Henry VII contributed to the rebuilding of the church by donating oak beams for its roof.
Nice church where you can climb to the bell tower, about 120 steps so 3-5m. The church is free but the climb is about 7 quid.
Juan L — Google review
The Church of St Mary the Great, often called Great St Mary’s, is one of the most important and historic churches in Cambridge. It stands right in the heart of the city, next to the marketplace and opposite the Senate House of the University of Cambridge. The church dates back to the 15th century in its current form, though there was a parish church on the site much earlier. It has long been tied to the University of Cambridge, serving as the official university church. For centuries, major university ceremonies and sermons were held here, making it central to academic life. Architecturally, it is a beautiful example of late Gothic style, with a tall tower that dominates the city center. Visitors can climb the tower, which offers one of the best panoramic views of Cambridge—the colleges, the market square, and even the countryside beyond. Inside, you’ll find elegant wooden galleries, a fine organ, and striking stained-glass windows.
Yarys — Google review
One of the highlights building in Cambridge. It's very impressive construction, but the tower stands out. You have to climb the one hundred twenty seven steps to admire the vest overview of the city. The only 'but' could be that you have to pay almost nine euros to do it.
Manuel — Google review
Beautiful Anglican Cathedral This is an iconic Church in the hypercentre of Cambridge. It sits right in front of Cambridge market and next to some of the top colleges. The building is beautiful and is historical dating back a few centuries. To be noted this is a great place also to climb up the stairs to get a view of Cambridge town centre. You can buy tickets in advance but you can also get them here too.
Paul V — Google review
Reasonable sized church in the middle of Cambridge, which is free to enter, however to go up the bell tower it is £7.50. Outside the church is the very touristy area of Cambridge, so stepping inside for some peace and tranquility is much appreciated. Lovely stained glass windows and high ceilings make the church fairly impressive, although it doesn't take too long to see everything.
Atlas — Google review
Was walking passed and saw a sign to climb up the tower, so I was sold. 123 steps gets you to the top where you get amazing views from one of the tallest buildings in Cambridge.

Saffron Walden Market is a historic market square with circular excavations dating back to 1699. The town offers various attractions, including the Saffron Walden Museum and Fry Art Gallery. Visitors can also enjoy free activities such as exploring ancient ruins and pottery centers. Additionally, families can find numerous child-friendly farms and adventure parks in the area. The town hosts events like the Easter Adventure Quest and U3A open meetings with guest speakers, providing entertainment for all ages.
It wasn't a market day, only Tuesdays and Saturdays. We even enjoyed the visit to the village and took lots of pictures of the beautiful facades. There is so much history through the walls and houses that if you can stop and close your eyes, you can listen to the old tales.

Went on a good tour of the market on a Saturday. It was meant to be grazing... But we were handed so much to eat that it filled.me for breakfast and lunch. Full of history and full of food stalls that have been resident for so long. The fish stall / open air restaurant is just a superb place to indulge. Shout out to the deli, cheese man, the natural foods stall, the oil and vinegar stall, the gut food stall and the olive stall! All were just lovely. Will now visit more often and preferably early. Thank you to Rachel H for the tour which starts at the tourist info centre. It was a pure delight and indulgence. Loved every minute.

Surprise find for us. Went to Audley End house and went into Saffron Walden to see St. Mary's church and just stumbled upon the market and the lovely town. Loads of fresh produce, fish and baked goods. We walked around the village for a bit, marveling at the old 13th century architecture. We will definitely be back for a visit.

St Marys Church

Church
St Marys Church, located in the market town of Saffron Walden, is a remarkable historical site. The church boasts a towering spire that reaches 193 feet, making it the tallest in Essex. Construction on this Norman church began in the 12th century and continued with various additions and alterations over the following centuries. Adjacent to St Marys are the ruins of Walden Castle, originally built in the 12th century by Geoffrey de Mandeville.
A beautiful and welcoming church. I visited St Mary’s in Saffron Walden shortly after a service and was truly touched by how friendly and kind everyone was. Although I hadn’t attended the service itself, the people I met afterward were incredibly warm and made me feel genuinely welcome. A lovely, open community in a stunning historic setting
Arosha W — Google review
Liked this church and it's connection with King's College Chapel, Cambridge. Fascinating history along with its benefactors. Nice to hear the westminster chimes too. Short walk from the market place.
Drew T — Google review
An absolute gem of a church that is beautifully maintained and the parishioners and church goers should be proud. I visited because I am very in to Tudor history at the moment, and this church houses the tomb of Lord Thomas Audley of Walden - his tomb is at the back of the church in what looks to be the church office/paperwork area, which I feel he'd approve of and smile at - I know I smiled at the random elastic band on his tomb and the piles of paperwork in the surrounding area, very fitting for the man I feel. The church is huge - bigger than some cathedrals (Chelmsford I'm looking at you!) - and it's really nice to walk around and take everything in. The church itself towers over Saffron Walden and it's just magnificent seeing the spire as you enter the town. The grounds it sits on are also lovely and it's nice to sit there with a coffee and gather your thoughts in peace. I'd highly recommend a visit. It's just a lovely church and there's something awe inspiring about churches and cathedrals, even if one isn't religious. There is a toilet - but it is only open during service times so bear that in mind, it was locked when I went because there wasn't a service on. There are public toilets available nearby, and toilets in coffee shops and Waitrose that are a short walk from the church.
Katy — Google review
A nicely maintained church. I visited tourist purposes. Easy to access from town centre and there is toilet that opens in the service times.
Muge B — Google review
Saint Mary's Church is a rather impressive structure in the market town of Saffron Walden . I had visited here before but was unfortunately closed the first time so I was thrilled to see the inside and I wasn't disappointed . First recorded in 1130 the current building mainly dates from 1250/58 . The wonderful John Wastell of Kings College Chapel Cambridge fame made further additions in about 1450 . Any Cathedral geeks like me will of heard this name elsewhere , what a talent . I loved this place the Reredos was amazing the overall feel was one of calm and peace . There was a great modern stained glass window dated 2000 of the virgin and child and another featuring the prodigal son and others , which reminded me of well me . The lectern had a carved Eagle as many do but this one looked very majestic . A few more than 7 trumpets adorn the organ but I bet these can make just as fantastic a sound as they look like they can . This in my opinion is just another jewel in the crown of Saffron Walden great historical town well worth a visit .
Heimdal O — Google review
Considering that the church has been reporting its history since 1140, it can be said that the church has undergone many changes, as it is in good condition. It should be noted that the pompous structures are in no way inferior to their similar counterparts in size. In me it was evoking some feeling of formality, there is no intimacy, more like a showoff, does not resonate at all with the skewed wretched buildings of the city where people are forced to heat with wood

Specialty Museums
Saffron Walden Museum is a must-visit in Saffron Walden, offering a glimpse into the town's rich history. Visitors can explore the ruined castle remains and the neighboring Turf Maze, which is the largest in England. Additionally, they can admire St Mary the Virgin, the largest parish church in Essex, and discover works by Edward Bawden & Eric Ravilious at the Fry Art Gallery. The museum also features ancient ruins and offers insight into local heritage.
Amazing collection from the ice age, vikings and egypt to local hystory. Very friendly staff and great location next to the castle and St Mary's church.

We had such a lovely visit today. We were especially impressed with how child friendly the museum is - our 2 grandsons loved it. The complimentary back pack filled with different things to use & do while visiting was great. Thank you so much for making us so welcome - we look forward to visiting again very soon.

This is a fantastic museum with masses to see and child friendly with activities and searches for them to do. It covers some many areas local history, wildlife, ancient world and people. There's limited free parking for visitors and entry is on £2.50 for adults half price for pensioners. There are stains inside but there's stair lifts and a main lift so it's accessible to all. Don't miss going here, and the castle is next door.
Nicholas T — Google review
Fantastic local museum. Forgot just got big this place is, is like a TARDIS what they've been able to get in there.
Christopher B — Google review
Cheap, small museum which is good for kids. Doesn't take too long to go round so they are less likely to get bored and they had little explorer rucksacks. There were quite a few kid height exhibits with signs saying dont touch though, and given that they are kid height that is quite a lot to ask of a small child. There is a mummy which is proportionate in size to the museum. There are some very creepy dolls. Dont look them in the eye.
Susannah H — Google review
Lovely museum for a quick visit. £2.50/adult

This place is well worth a look very interesting indeed and much bigger than I thought . I didn't allow myself enough time to see it all properly and shall have to return . The staff are very welcoming and friendly . For a local museum the information and displays are amazing . Only one section is exclusively about Saffron Walden which is very interesting but it takes you on a trip through time and Continents . I came especially to see the Anglo Saxon gold ring but was excited to see a coin of Harold Godwinson . But there is much Much more here most enjoyable . But remember allow a bit more time than I did .

Saffron Screen is a not-for-profit cinema located in a town that also houses a community cinema and a world-class concert hall. The venue screens both arthouse and mainstream films, often featuring themed seasons. It is situated near attractions like the historic Audley End House and Audley End Miniature Railway. The single-screen cinema, set in the local high school, offers comfortable seating despite being slightly firm.
Absolutely first class venue. Very comfortable; excellent sound system and most importantly, excellent staff. The best cinematic experience ever!

Great cinema Not far town Way park at school Friendly team staff You get your tickes Get sncks drinks
Richard C — Google review
Saffron Screen is a welcome, now established addition to the town's leisure services. The selection of films is good, considering the need to appeal to a broad audience, and the volunteer-run concessions stand has a fine mix of provisions, notably including wine. The seats could be a bit more comfortable, but you can't have everything!
Adrian L — Google review
Just watched the film Maigret. Excellent French language with subtitles. Atmospheric. Saffron Screen offers great choice of films. Plenty of Parking space available. Varied refreshments and if you become a member free hot drink at all performances. A great independent cinema. Well worth supporting
Korch M — Google review
We visited one Sunday afternoon. There was plenty of parking and the venue was sign posted from the car park. Where we had parked (gold car park) we found that I had to push mum in the wheelchair on the road because the footpaths had no dropped kerbs. We realised as we approved the front door that we could have parked much closer. We arrived at the entrance and was directed to Saffron Screen (this site is also home to Saffron Hall). An attendant kindly held the door open for us as mum was in a wheelchair. There was food and drink available to purchase in the hall before the film. It was warm inside (we went on a very cold day) and we found our seats quickly as they were all numbered. Be aware that only the front seats are ground level as the rest are tiered. The screen was a perfect size for the hall and we could hear everything clearly. When the film was over we went outside and found it was dark. There was plenty of lighting around the venue and car park.
Fiona H — Google review
Great cinema, although long queue as we arrived, after standing innit for 10 minutes it transpired it was for snacks etc!.. would have been useful to know beforehand! Cinema way to hot 🔥 Otherwise good.
Martyn S — Google review
Part of such a great hub of culture, along with Saffron Hall, all within the school. Seems to choose its films carefully. However, when we attended, the cinema was far too cold. No signs up about heating not working - maybe this is normal?
J W — Google review
Nice local cinema set in the local high school. Just a single screen and the films are often shown a few weeks after release. However they also have live streamed concerts and plays occasionally. The seats are a little bit on the hard side but not too uncomfortable and adequate for the duration of the film. Ticket prices are a bit on the high side too.

Meze By Night, also known as Maze Bar & Grill, is a delightful Turkish restaurant that truly stands out in the local dining scene. With its cozy atmosphere and warm hospitality, it feels like a hidden gem waiting to be discovered. Diners rave about the authentic cuisine, beautifully presented dishes, and generous portions that make every meal feel special. Whether you're indulging in their famous falafel or savoring the prawn casserole with a gluten-free twist, each bite is packed with flavor.
A hidden gem of a restaurant - fabulously yummy food. The warmest of welcomes and top drawer service. We ordered lots of starters - and loved them all. And super good value.

Would recommend the prawn casserole! Very tasty! Swapped to rice as GF option. Would love for the mint tea to be more fresh but nice anyway! Lovely evening with friends.

Combined birthday and Father's Day meal. Food, portions, and service were all good. Appropriate music playing in the background wasn't too loud. Very accommodating staff when we first arrived for one of our party who has mobility issues. All in all, it was an enjoyable evening. It's not the cheapest, but I would recommend it for a special meal.

Great atmosphere, and amazing Turkish food. Delicious and authentic. Would recommend the Falafel - best I've had. Certainly one of the best dining experiences to be had in the local area. Brilliant value for the quality and quantity of food you get!

Such a cosy little Turkish restaurant, hidden gem I’d say. Was able to accommodate myself and about 10 of us as a walk in without a wait. Food was really good. Definitely recommend

Great takeaway from Meze tonight. Loved the mixed grill, chicken beyti, sucuk and falafel. Staff really friendly as well. Would definitely recommend if you're in Saffron Walden

Reasonably priced and fairly good lunch (meze options) although not huge portions. Don’t order the ‘Turkish mint tea’ though, it’s just a peppermint tea bag in a mug!

Restaurant
Chater's is a highly acclaimed restaurant located in Saffron Walden, Essex, which has been recognized as one of the best places to live in the East of England. The Guardian reviewer Grace Dent praised it for exceeding expectations. The restaurant is known for its impeccable service and delicious food, with fresh pasta and small plates receiving particular praise. The atmosphere is described as informal yet special, making it a favorite spot for both coffee and cake during the day and dinner in the evening.
You can taste the delicate and heartfelt flavors. The staffs are incredibly friendly and the atmosphere is wonderful. The service and taste at this price are just amazing. My favorite place!

We almost stumbled into this wonderful place in the lovely town, walking over from Audley End. Super friendly staff. Great dishes. A very hipster atmosphere. A great surprise and absolutely worth the money - expecially the pasta and the Tiramisu!
Marcus B — Google review
I’d made a note of Chaters after seeing Jamie Oliver mention their pastries on instagram, as I knew we’d be visiting Saffron Walden in the coming months. Well I guess we were a little disappointed to find there were no pastries left and it was a lunch menu only. Needless to say our lunch was still excellent. The quality of ingredients and presentation was sublime. Our waiter was fantastic and they accommodated our fussy three-year old with her request of spaghetti and tomato sauce. I loved the atmosphere in here, nice chilled not too loud music, and surprisingly comfortable. I thought it was reasonably priced for the quality of food too. (We also had delicious bread, not pictured.)

We had the most beautiful lunch! I dined here with two friends and it felt like we ordered everything on the menu, but not a single thing was less than perfect. Diego was helpful, charming and knowledgable. Service all round was relaxed but attentive, and the martini is banging.

A real treat for a Saturday lunch. Loads of interesting fabulous dishes that were very affordable for the high standard and quality of everything. Very inspiring place if you love good food. Visiting for the first time on a Friday evening. Pre-booking was easy and the welcome was the best yet! As there was 3 of us and we all wanted specific items there was no sharing :( We all had a different Pasta dish, and mine was a simple dish with olive oil and garlic. It tasted great but I have to say it was so loaded with Garlic that I suffered during the night!! May be hold back on it by at least 50%... less is more! Everything else was great! Had another great lunch yesterday (26th March 25)to celebrate a birthday and have a good chat! I just love this place and all the staff are wonderful!

Pub
Nestled just off the bustling market square, The Kings Arms in Saffron Walden is a charming pub that perfectly captures the essence of British hospitality. This cozy spot is ideal for unwinding after a visit to nearby St. Mary's Church, offering a delightful selection of well-kept real ales recognized by CAMRA and Cask Marque. With its inviting atmosphere, especially during winter when a roaring fire warms the space, it’s an excellent venue for enjoying live music on weekends.
Great little pub!! Worth a visit. Friendly staff and lovely and cozy. I bet it's nice in winter when it's cold out and you can sit by the fire with a nice a few drinks. Guinness is good too. Will definitely return. We didn't eat here and it didn't seem obvious they did food, we might have missed it or they may have stopped serving. Ideal pub for a nice quiet drink 👍

We had such a lovely time at the pub! The atmosphere was welcoming and relaxed, and the service was absolutely fantastic. A big shout-out to Nicole, Jess and Debbie - they couldn't have been more friendly or attentive. Nothing was too much trouble, and they really made the visit feel special. Highly recommend popping in if you're looking for great service and a proper local vibe!

Despite there being no-one in the pub on arrival (12:30 on a Thursday) we put our faith in the online Google reviews. So glad we did. We both had scampi & chips which came quickly and was a generous portion, beautifully presented with peas a salad garnish. Only down side was that there was no vinegar & the plates were very cold. (Food was very hot though) Highly recommended.

A little boozer just off the market square. It's quite small, so feels busy even when there's not all that many punters in. The burgers were decent enough, and there's a good selection of drinks. Bar staff seemed a bit confused, but service was ok. We didn't try the beer garden on account of the weather, but it's great that they have one! Don't expect the Ritz but it's not a bad old pub at all.

Fish and chips takeaway
Restaurant
When in Saffron Walden, don't miss out on the classic British dish of Fish and Chips at The Walden Fish and Chips on High Street. This spot offers a variety of options including cod, plaice, and battered sausage. The kids' menu is affordable and satisfying for little fish lovers. Despite a minor issue with service, the food here is highly recommended by locals and visitors alike.
Fantastic. Fresh oil used. Fresh fish with a light crisp batter. Lovely chips perfectly fried. Friendly people who are attentive and rather sweet. Hardworking team. We will return.
Nilly C — Google review
This is the second time we have had barely edible fish and chips. We couldn't eat the batter, it was like crisp paper. The fish was dry and one piece was not even the size of a small portion. I think it had sat in the heater for too long . £20 not well spent. We will try another fish shop in town next time.
Jillian O — Google review
Had the most delicious fish and chips last night! The batter was so light and crispy, the fish was amazing, super chip shop chips and really friendly staff! Thanks for a lovely supper
Julie B — Google review
Ordered online for a specified delivery time of 20:00. Food arrived at 18:45. We couldn't eat until 20:00, so had to keep it warm at home. As a result, food wasn't great. Rang up and they said nothing could be done because it's too busy and they only have one delivery driver. I wouldn't have made this order if I knew this. The website shouldn't offer a specified time if it can't be kept. The customer service because of this was poor.
Richard K — Google review
Very delicious fresh cod and chips to order, friendly staff, Chef happy to prepare cod as requested. Excellent customer service and value for money. We will return if visiting Safron Walden in the future, thank you !

Fish was dry and chewy and ended up throwing most of it away. Sausage was fine, but very cheap quality. Chips were decent enough. Appreciate that this isn't a super expensive place, but the food just wasn't up to much.

So we placed an order for 70 fish and chips for our dementia groups VE Day lunch. You came up trumps, delivering on time, still all hot and very tasty, loved by all. Sincere thanks for getting it all too us.
