Pont-Aven in 3 days

If you only have 3 days to spend in Pont-Aven, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Pont-Aven is a small riverside town in Brittany known for its scenic harbor, old watermills, and traditional stone houses. It became famous in the late 19th century as a center for painters like Paul Gauguin and the Pont-Aven School, a legacy reflected today in its galleries and the Musée de Pont-Aven. Visitors come for leisurely walks along the Aven and through the wooded “Bois d’Amour” paths, as well as for Breton specialties such as butter biscuits and crêpes. Its location also makes a convenient base for exploring the rugged south Finistère coast and nearby beaches.
With favorites like auberge ty an heol, Rosmadec Le Moulin, and Amour Woods, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like La Pension du Moulin - Hôtel restaurant and Hôtel Restaurant Les Mimosas so you can get the best taste of Pont-Aven while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Nestled in the charming town of Pont-Aven, Le Moulin du Grand Poulguin is a delightful centuries-old water mill that offers a unique dining experience. Here, you can savor delicious crepes and pizzas while enjoying live jazz music and art exhibitions that add to the vibrant atmosphere. The venue is perfect for group meals and caters to vegetarian diets, making it an ideal spot for those looking to indulge in Breton cuisine.
A good time to visit this lovely little restaurant as it will be very busy 'in season'. Billed as a Pizza restaurant, this Bar/Brasserie actually offers far more and of course regular French Cuisne. A central bar is a focal point for drinks with cosy seating areas all around. 2 open terraces right on the river are lovely and command a great view. The one at the rear was my favourite. Don't forget to have a look at the working mill inside. Friendly staff and the owner took time to chat with us..... and in English, which was good for me! Je ne parle qu'un peu français!
Bob R — Google review
Lovely setting eating at this water mill. Babbling sounds of water rushing by in the outside seating with ducks crowding around the banks. Quick service. Yummy poke bowls and very large pizzas!
Ranjana C — Google review
Real good restaurant! The mussels were delicious and big. Oysters are the best in all the months that finished with ER like September, locals says. The beef carpaccio was succulent. The view at Pont-Aven is incredible.
Anne-Cécile — Google review
Went here to get dinner. Staff were really slow and not interested. Waited 20 minutes to order even though it wasn’t busy. Meanwhile went past the kitchen which was glass fronted to see and it looked absolutely filthy. Decided to eat elsewhere wisely
STAN U — Google review
Delicious food, great crepes, bowls and burgers, varied menu, but unfortunately, we weren't served any more appetizers at 8:00 PM. The "table water" was chlorinated tap water. A no-go, the kind you'd normally only find in the US.
Der C — Google review
Triggered to enter this establishment due to their location and the live music. We enjoyed a good, tastefull and musical meal😋
Jorrig P — Google review
Very good food and a diversified menu. Very original gallette and crepes. Good service. Highly recommended.

Very unfriendly and rude barman supported by the rest of the restaurant team. I have never seen auch an unfriendly person in any restaurant in France. Wow .... We left...thanks

Nestled in a picturesque location, Le Pen Aven is a delightful restaurant that promises an unforgettable dining experience. The friendly staff adds to the welcoming atmosphere, ensuring that visitors feel right at home. With stunning views overlooking the river port and park, it's an ideal spot for enjoying lunch or indulging in sweet treats like their renowned caramel sundae and Cafe Chantilly.
We had a lovely lunch here with a great view, atmosphere, food and service. We had the mussels, which were plentiful and delicious (especially the chorizo cream) and they came with lovely chips. The white chocolate crepe and coffees were amazing too! Overall we had a lovely, relaxed lunch here and will definitely be back.
Georgia C — Google review
If you have a plat/prix fixe, it comes with a complimentary glass of great local cider as an aperitif. Oysters and moules frites were excellent. Proper chips, airy and crisp with a good chunk of potato. Hospitable, genuine and friendly service with a smile. Supplied coloured pencils for our noisy kids, offered a booster seat and gave them little bubble makers as they left.

Very good. We were 7 people, they accommodated for us immediately. The creps are really creative and tasty, and the staff is friendly. Would come again

Points of Interest & Landmarks
The Musée des Beaux-Arts de Pont-Aven is a museum that showcases the works of artists from the Pont-Aven School, a group that gathered in the village between 1850 and 1890. The collection includes pieces by well-known artists such as Emile Bernard, Paul-Emile Colin, Paul Serusier, and Paul Gauguin, featuring styles ranging from Synthetism to post-Impressionism.
Such lovely place to sit on the beach and chill even had WiFi
Wayne P — Google review
It's remarkable that this impressive museum only opened its doors in 1985. In the second half of the 19th century, Pont-Aven held a considerable appeal for artists. They came here to paint, as the museum's collection attests. The term "École de Pont-Aven" only emerged later. And it wasn't exclusively French artists who came to work in this region of Brittany; artists of other nationalities also came. The museum explores various themes through artworks from 1850 to 1950. The different perspectives provide a beautiful and varied picture of this particularly artistically prolific period in Pont-Aven. A visit is definitely a must for art lovers.

Very nice museum, the current temporary exhibition is absolutely worth a visit, if you are in the general area of pont-aven. The permanent exhibition is nice, as you can visit some of the sceneries in the paintings within 5 minutes of walking along the woods and the places are definitely recognisable still.

A must see when visiting Pont Aven. Small entrance fee, friendly staff, wonderful historical art on view.

La Pension du Moulin - Hôtel restaurant is a charming establishment nestled in the heart of Pont Aven, welcoming guests year-round with its cozy ambiance. Originally known as Les Ajoncs d'Or, this quaint hotel boasts 25 beautifully renovated rooms that blend contemporary style with comfort. Guests can enjoy complimentary Wi-Fi and an optional breakfast to start their day right. The on-site restaurant offers a delightful dining experience, featuring well-prepared dishes and attentive service that enhances your meal.
This review is for the restaurant as we didn't stay there. Visitors to Pont-Aven should run, not walk, to this quant restaurant to sample their menu du jour with the star attraction, Parmentier de Canard. One of the best dishes we've had in our travels in Brittany. What a lovely, fabulous dish of delicious morsels of shredded duck with creamy mashed potatoes over it. Similar to shepherd's pie, but 5000 times better. The Parmentier is named for Antoine-Augustin Parmentier (1737-1813), a French pharmacist and agronomist who spent his adult life promoting the potato! The restaurant also has a nice selection of beers on tap and a good wine list by the glass, pichets, or bottles. Service is friendly, professional and very welcoming.
Adeline L — Google review
There aren’t many restaurants open in Pont Aven in October. We discovered this one by chance. It is a lovely place. You enter through the door to the hotel, where the desk clerk will greet you. The restaurant door isn’t noticeable. But after the clerk guides you into the dining area you will encounter a beautiful room, with well informed, neatly dressed service staff. The food was superb. Excellent in preparation and presentation. Our only complaint was the unwillingness of the chef to cook the duck well, as we do not like it rare (or rosy, as the young waiter explained). But there are plenty of other choices, all of which we found very pleasing.
Hobbs W — Google review
This hotel has been renovated so the photos on Google maps are outdated. They are now bright and fresh. The beds are comfortable and the bathrooms are clean. The lady on the front desk was wonderful. She was helpful and friendly and her English is perfect. The guy on the desk in the morning was also friendly and helpful. The restaurant has also had a revamp. The food was great and the waiter was really friendly and helpful.
Amber H — Google review
We spent two nights at this hotel. Our room was small but had a comfortable bed and a modern, reasonably sized bathroom. Without air conditioning, we slept with the window open, exposing us to noise from youths on scooters and playing loud music on the hotel's terrace while drinking and smoking. The cigarette smoke also drifted up to our room on the first floor. We are unsure if second-floor rooms experienced the same issues. The staff was nice but did not offer protein-rich vegan options for breakfast (there are basically only fruits and bread, with no tofu, lentils, chickpeas, vegan cakes, soja yogourt or similar items). The hotel is well located
Balata — Google review
We visited only restaurant. The food was excellent, but the servis was very poor, especially the blonde lady, who was really unfriendly to help. (The quiet young man was really nice and helpfull). She demaged the work of the chef.
Daniel H — Google review
don’t go there. we failed to make a reservation at the other places in town, so we had no choice - but we should have fasted instead. service is super-clumsy and overwhelmed by simple tasks. brioche was burned, then i complained and got a mostly unbaked dough. fois gras was the only bad one i had in france - by far. the other bread was old. the “premium” fish had a wobbly skin, little taste and the rice was over cooked 2 times. the “sauce” was a failed mayonnaise, the vegetables were unpleasantly bitter. even for half the price, i would still be shocked by the food quality. go to any other 4.5+ restaurant in town and make sure to be early when making your reservation.
Christoph — Google review
Terrible food - bread is obviously not fresh/ it is old. Products are of low quality - I especially did not feel comfortable du tonten fact fish and seafood is on the menu. Dishes are without spices. I would not recommend this restaurant to a friend or anyone at all.

Nestled in a picturesque setting, Hôtel Restaurant Les Mimosas offers guests an inviting escape with bright rooms that boast stunning river views. The hotel features a cozy restaurant where culinary creativity shines through seasonal dishes, including the must-try lobster burger. Diners rave about the delightful sea bream tartare and expertly cooked tenderloin, complemented by refreshing craft beers on tap. With attentive service and a charming terrace overlooking the port of Pont-Aven, it's no wonder that this spot is popular among visitors.
Super impressed with the Lobster frites. We have stopped for coffee many times over the last 10 years but not eaten here. We will definitely come again. Excellent value and a large half lobster superbly cooked.

Dinner at restaurant was great, wife had Filet de St Pierre and I had Epole de Cochon. Sauce was the most amazing part of both meals.

Stayed in this beautiful hotel over a 5 day period for a wedding nearby. We staying in a room with a deck / patio that looked over the river, which was great. The room was OK (a lot was sold out in town by the time we made our booking) but the location was outstanding - plenty of parking as well. And the food was superb. The village of Pont Aven is heavenly, lots of pretty shops and the river was particularly breathtaking as it runs through the main areas. There are several paths down to the river near Galerie Izart - walk down them and see the majesty of the water bubbling over the gorgeous, large, pebble-shaped rocks. You could sit all day there and dip your legs into the water to get cool, whilst reading a book. Will definitely be returning to Pont Aven. **PS don't travel to this area of France without a car. Its is not easy to get to and there are no cabs, Ubers or rental car places.
Patricia K — Google review
The restaurant is located near the river with plenty of tables outside. The food is fresh and prices are pretty low compared to the rest of the city. The food is fresh and well prepared - we really enjoyed it! The only thing that takes away one star is the service. Unfortunately it's often the case in France that customer service is written rather small. Waiters taking too much time and again jo English skills at all.
Toni M — Google review
Very nice food, a must for those who love seafood. It was busy and we waited for a while which wasn't a problem but we felt we were an inconvenience to one staff member however the others were amazing , thanks to them we would go back. Far better place to have lunch than in town when it's busy !
Lynn R — Google review
Sat at a very pleasant table overlooking the river. Tried to catch waitress' attention to no avail. Owner simply ignored us. We walked away after 15 minutes. In the UK this cafe would be out of business for their poor service
Nick S — Google review
A very good combination: 1. Service was very attentive 2. Location superb (we sat outside for beautiful view) 3. Food was very well prepared (lobster risotto, oysters, veal... Each one done very nicely 4. The wine choices matched well 5. Prices were better than most places in the region. It was very busy, so we're glad we booked a table. People seemed to arrive in waves 7pm and 9pm so book accordingly. A very enjoyable experience.

Room 2,with a terrace overlooking the river was excellent. Not large but had all we needed. We looked around the numerous Pont Aven restaurants but decided that the hotel menu was our perfect for us and we weren't disappointed We last stayed here 9 years ago and we would hope to return one day You can book directly I think

Nestled in the charming town of Pont-Aven, Rosmadec Le Moulin is a delightful dining destination that beautifully marries history with culinary excellence. This refined restaurant, set within a former water mill, offers an inviting atmosphere where guests can savor seasonal French cuisine crafted from fresh local ingredients. The ambiance is warm and welcoming, making it an ideal spot for leisurely lunches or special occasions.
A remarkable and unique experience. Starting from the reservation, the arrival including the excellent service and - of course - the perfect menu. A splendid and unforgettable lunch menu with so many different flavour carriers, different textures and tastes. The Chef created a very interesting menu with rich in variety.

We made a reservation for a delightful lunch two weeks in advance at Rosmadec Le Moulin, and it was truly a memorable experience. We indulged in their exquisite 4-course tasting lunch menu priced at 65 Euros, expertly crafted and thoughtfully adjusted to the season. The culinary artistry displayed both in the kitchen and at our table was exceptional. From the impeccable table service to the exquisite wine pairings and the delightful cheese finale, every aspect of our meal left us in awe of the attention to detail and professionalism exhibited by the staff. Each dish was a masterpiece of presentation, and the staff's passionate explanations of ingredients and garnishes added an extra layer of appreciation for the cuisine. Set in a stunning location, the attentive service paired with the restaurant's picturesque surroundings made for an unforgettable experience. We were fortunate to secure an outdoor seating spot, which enhanced our enjoyment. If you find yourself in Pont-Aven and seek a truly exceptional dining experience, we wholeheartedly recommend Rosmadec Le Moulin. Our sincere gratitude to the entire team at Rosmadec Le Moulin for creating such a remarkable culinary journey!
Alica I — Google review
We have reserved well in advance in the restaurant and shared the information that one of us was suffering from multiple allergies. Upon our arrival, the serving team and kitchen was already prepared. Although we had the been to Michelin star restaurants in the past, never had we had the opportunity to enjoy the full menu in an allergy friendly way. In Rosmadec Le Moulin, we could enjoy a full 10 (!) course tasting menu, brilliantly composed and adjusted to allergies (no easy task, without any milk products). The kitchen has excelled, just as the service. From the serving at the table through the wine pairing up to the arrival of the cheese (for the non allergic party) - we were amazed by the attention and professionalism. If you are in Pont-Aven and you can treat yourself to this wonderful restaurant, please take our suggestion and do! Yes the 10 course tasting menu is pricy (around 110 €) just as the wine pairing (around 130€) - but it will be a unique experience for you. From here a special thanks to the restaurant for giving us this unique opportunity to experience modern french cuisine in this enjoyable way. A special thanks to the sommelier as well who paired the courses perfectly and was very attentive and pleasant in explaining the different qualities of the wines :) Just some of the highlights: 1. Oyster sorbet with cauliflower rice 2. Poached asparagus with vegetarian cream sauce 3. Filet of beef 4. Pork belly with sorrel and peas 5. Flowers of apple with salted caramel

Wow, what à fantasic expérience. I can only think of one meal at à 3 star in the nordics that we enjoyed as much or more than Le Moulin but to compare to other restaurants does them à disservice, the fish plates were masterful with the moules piment vert et lait du ribot a surprise and a delight. Attentive service in a beautiful setting, not to be missed

For day 2, we recommend exploring the northwest side side of town. Start the day off with Aven Parc - Parc d'attractions, then wind down and take it easy by the time you get to Pont-Aven, School D'art. All together, your day would be filled with about 7 hours of non-stop fun.

Aven Parc is an incredible discovery enjoyed by families with children of different ages. The park offers a range of suitable attractions for kids, along with ample picnic spots and a restaurant where one can indulge in delicious meals. The chicken strips are highly recommended. It's an ideal place to spend quality time with the kids, providing both fun rides and relaxation areas. Some suggestions for improvement include enhancing shade availability and speeding up Pinocchio's appearance at the end.
We had an amazing time at Aven Parc near Névez! My family and I were truly impressed by how much there is to do. The combination of attractions and animals makes for a really fun and varied experience. From adventurous activities to gentle farm encounters, there’s something for everyone – young and old. I read a few reviews saying it’s a “small park, nice for a half-day,” but honestly, we spent the entire day here and still didn’t get bored. It absolutely does not feel small. There’s so much to explore and enjoy. The staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming, which added to the relaxed and joyful vibe of the place. Highly recommend Aven Parc if you're in the area – it’s a hidden gem that offers a full day of fun for the whole family!
Maikel Z — Google review
Please check about height/age restrictions for activities before buying tickets. We have twin 7 Yr olds who are very tall for their age. There were multiple activities that they weren't permitted on as the had an "under 8" wristband. This led to lots of tears and disappointment as they were activities they have been allowed to do at similar parks in the UK. If I'd have known beforehand I would have said they were 8 at the ticket office. Other than that the park was nice, clean, safe, and well laid out. The maise maze was fun but allow at least 1 hour to complete.
Liz M — Google review
Great place to go with kids, loads to do from an interactive maze to seeing pigs and goats to bouncy castles etc. Only negative is the cost is a bit high

It is OK but, although it is supposed to be a non smoking facility, many people smoke next to children and staff does not care. When some children miss behave and upset other children, staff does not care. Waterpark with inflatables got over crowded with adults who did not care for children safety and yet again staff did not care. Basically, without ASBO and with caring staff, it would be great for children

We tasted succulent dishes with flavors bordering on indecency, it was so good! The service was perfect, with the discovery of our dishes full of poetry and passion in the owner's words. We left with a full stomach, excited taste buds, hands full of a superb pearl tree made by the owner's fairy fingers and the certainty that we will come back :) (Original) Nous avons découvert un jolie petit restaurant accueillant avec une vrais cuisine, utilisant des produits de régions savoureux.

(Translated by Google) “The painting is not where we think it is” You wander through the streets of Pont-Aven, from stores to boutiques and other galleries, because this village is renowned for being that of painters and its cake. The time is coming when we need to eat! The choice of restaurants is impressive, but if you want to eat in peace and respect quality, know how to leave this place and head towards Nizon, there you will find an inn where you will enjoy yourself. From the city center to this inn, 2.5 km separate you from a perfect dinner. A beautiful building facing the church extends its arms to you; walk through the door of this establishment and your eye will be drawn to its warm and friendly atmosphere. A smile and courtesy are required in this inn; around twenty places in a pleasant setting, with a particularity, certain decorations can be purchased. Proposals of 2 formulas in addition to the menu, of course. We opt for a lunch formula, 2 dishes, plus a coffee, for one and the option of returning from fishing and a dessert for the second, all washed down with a glass of white wine recommended by the owner. I won't tell you about my starter, a plate of tapasses (a treat); but of our two dishes: Grilled sardines on lemon and garlic butter, Hake a la plancha accompanied by coconut cream risotto and seasonal vegetables. You know the term delicious, here we are talking about sublime, refined and quality cuisine. A treat for our taste buds! Our fish and its accompaniments are unsuspectingly fresh and cooked to perfection, or the seasonings are just right and deserve no judgment. I won't tell you about dessert, French toast on a bed of caramel and vanilla ice cream; a “killing”, nothing to do with what we know You will have a more than pleasant and relaxing time, because you leave this establishment with regret and the feeling that you must come back more often. Thank you for this delicate dinner full of kindness from the staff and its chef Value for money, unbeatable! Ah, I forgot, if you like the wine that we served you, you can buy a bottle, because all the wines on the menu are on sale in this establishment; for those who want, of course, to keep a memory of this pleasant moment.

The Chapelle de Trémalo, a 16th-century chapel located in Tremalo, is situated 1.2km north of the town center. This historical site houses a wooden crucifix that was the inspiration behind two famous paintings by Gauguin - The Yellow Christ and his Self-Portrait with the Yellow Christ. The chapel stands on private lands still owned by descendants of its original builders, who constructed and consecrated it in 1532.
Fantastic place to discover and feel what artists like Gauguin might have experienced in meditating here and in the surroundings. Place of a various XIV wooden craft, among which the Christ crucified, a very special one in its type, for it looks like almost smiling in face of dead: this artcraft was inspiration to the famous Gauguin's Yellow Christ.

Les 3 Buis is an exceptional eatery that specializes in exquisite French cuisine. Offering incredible value for money, this restaurant serves up some of the most delectable fish dishes you'll ever taste. The chef's mastery in preparing the fish to perfection is truly impressive. While portion sizes may not be generous, it is evident that quality and flavor take precedence here.

This was our third visit in two years. The service was perfect as usual nothing was two much bother. Champagne by the glass and then the recommendation of wines first class. We. Arrived at 1pm all tables outside full and only one other table inside taken, very unusual for them. But have to say Pont Aven in general quiet. The menu does not change much so my wife had the langoustines ravioli again and I had the foie gras again followed by the filet of beef, this time very poor as it was the tail of the fillet, was tough. Then it was chocolate profiteroles again. By this time 2.30 we were the only people left so go earlier. Would we go back, yes if they change the menu otherwise are going to try other restaurants in Pont Aven.

Choice of two set menu choices priced at €29 and €59. We opted for the €29 and were happy with our choice. Service was great; al least 4 different people served us, o e of whom was the restaurant owner. We shared a table with another couple who we befriended and have subsequently swapped details. There was a lovely ambience in the restaurant, with a terrific buzz of noise of diners chatting with each other. Would eat here again should we revisit the town.

Excellent restaurant of french fine cuisine. Very good value for money. I had probably one of the best fish ever. The chef prepared it to perfection. Do not expect large quantities, in this place quality and taste prevail. Also I really appreciated the attention to details like the diversity of the plates, cutlery, glasses. The staff pays attention to you without being invasive. This all made a very pleasant experience. Lunch menu with starters, main course and dessert was around 24€. Unbeatable at that level of French cuisine.

We had a really nice dinner together with friends on the terrace. All of us took the menu for 29€ - Taste explosion for the 'bisque langoustines, moules & boudin noir', 'merlu grillé, lentilles & souce bloody marry' and 'ile flottante' - helpful explanations and friendly service - recommendation!

I came here in 2018, and couldn't fault anything. However, I came here last week, the main crepes were ok, but the dessert crepes weren't at all up to par. It kills me to say as the service and the atmosphere was excellent. My partner and I both had dessert crepes with banana, the bananas had all the flavour cooked out of them and just tasted like dry potato. My partner even questioned me if it was potato or banana. I will apologise to the restaurant owners as this may have just been a bad day, but the desserts this time were not up to par.

Great place! Hidden gem in Britannia. You would never know it’s a restaurant since it’s a converted home. Unsuspecting and low key. Warm ambiance and attention to detail. (Translated by Google) An insulting welcome, as if someone was going to steal her work of art... too bad for her or for the artists exhibited, I bought over €3,000 worth of paintings. This is how artists are exploited and underpaid for their art... 50 to 60% on each sale... a disgrace!
Caroline B — Google review
I asked the price of a work. It was expensive (although not unreasonably so considering the work in it) and I was honest and said our budget was 500 euros. I was told that would only buy a souvenir not a work of art. How insulting! I have spent much of my career working with artists. It's about the quality and authenticity of the work not how much it costs. Cost is calculated on the time that goes into it, that reputation of the artist and what people will pay.

(Translated by Google) Interesting works but not very warm welcome. The gallery owner has difficulty answering questions and even gives false information about the artists (not hesitating to make people believe that certain paintings are painted in Pont Aven, whereas when we inquire elsewhere, we realize that they are painted in Yvelines!)

Italian restaurant
Ca Lidovine is a charming Italian restaurant known for its excellent traditional cuisine and well-cooked pasta dishes in various sauces. While they don't serve pizza, the homemade tiramisu is highly recommended but should be reserved in advance due to limited quantities. The warm welcome and friendly service add to the experience, with a selection of high-quality cheese products, cold cuts, and delightful Italian zucchini gratin.
It's fresh authentic high quality delicious Italian food. There's no pizza. Also good Italian wine and beer. Reasonable prices and nice location. We loved it.

The bolognese!!!! I could honestly eat this for days - which I realize is somewhat ironic given this is an Italian restaurant in a small town in Britanny with amazing food - including Michelins!! But that bolognese - amazing!!!

(Translated by Google) Excellent restaurant. The pizzas are generous and reasonably priced (generally between 10 and 15 euros per pizza). The atmosphere is very pleasant, quite calm, with Italian music playing in the background. On a personal note, the coffee was delicious. I highly recommend this place.
