Plaza Mayor Ainsa is a captivating gem nestled atop a hill, offering visitors a glimpse into the medieval past of this charming town. As you wander through its cobbled streets, you'll discover an array of delightful restaurants and quaint gift shops tucked beneath archways. The plaza is surrounded by picturesque views of the old town and majestic mountains, making it an ideal spot for leisurely exploration.
Didn't do much research on Ainsa, thought we'd check out the Plaza. WOW , beautiful medieval old town high above modern Ainsa with stunning views , lovely gift shops, bars, a small craft market and restaurants. Bit of an uphill trek by foot, but noticed a carpark at the top so obviously driveable.

This stop was part of our Spanish cooking and hiking holiday with Argon Active. The entire medieval town is interesting. The picture of the wall is to show the ancient river bed that the town is built on. It looks like you can pull out the rocks but you can't.
Julia P — Google review
Magical place, it's like going back in time.

Hidden above the modern town, the medieval heart sits on a hill and is a fantastic place to visit. There is a car park for those who don't have the stamina to walk. The main square has a few restaurants, cafes and tourist gift shops tucked away in the archways. Next to the square there is a small park and the remains of a fortress which offers great views over the old town and the mountains. You can easily spend a couple of hours here.
Tamzin V — Google review
Its a very nice town, with lovely streets. You can walk around and enjoy the view of this charming town. You have a few souvenir shops and a square with restaurants as well. I would also recommend going to the eco museum nearby about the bearded vultures nearby
Edward — Google review
Stunning place would have liked to spend more time here especially if we stayed in one of the nice looking hotel's.
Colin B — Google review
Quite nice plaza mayor. Requires a little walking, and not very wheelchair or highheels friendly due to the cobbles.. Has some interesting shops. The restaurants in the plaza are fairly well priced and have a half decent selection of food. The castle at the end is worth walking around for some photo opportunities.
Robert V — Google review
Beautiful old Town. The castle is nearby for a great photo from the top. The town isn't large so easy to see it all in a few hours. Great bars around and good food.

Ecomuseo de la Fauna, managed by the Fundación para la Conservación del Quebrantahuesos (FCQ), is home to 6 raptors and a special resident named Huesos, a 2-year-old bearded vulture. The museum offers informative displays in both English and Spanish, providing insights into the wildlife of the Pyrenees.
Excellent place to visit and the lady on reception was so knowledgeable and enthusiastic. The displays and video are really informative.
K B — Google review
Great! I recommend 100%. Great professionals and dedicated with passion for the species conservation. I recommend the visit to the vulture feeding point. Great biologists will give you a talk about how they live and how they work with the human community in the area for the conservation of these amazing birds
Eva M — Google review
The staff here were so lovely (visited 28th May) - thank you! The museum had most information shown in English and Spanish, and we really enjoyed our visit. Super informative, really well thought out displays and we learnt a lot - it was bigger than we expected and well worth the 5 euro entry charge. Would highly recommend to anyone walking in the area - this will teach you so much about the wildlife of the Pyrenees. Seeing the vultures they have was a highlight! I don't personally visit zoos because I'm not keen on animals that should be wild being in captivity, but these are here because of former injuries that mean they can't be released. There's also an EV charger in the carpark, FYI!
Emily M — Google review
Excellent little museum with three sections: live rescued birds of prey, a nature film shot the area and detrimental effects of climate change and mankind, and a 3-floor exhibit of fauna and flora at different levels of the Pyrenees (including sounds).
Janette S — Google review
A great way to know more about "quebrantahuesos" and the flora and fauna found in the area. The tickets are inexpensive (5€) and the visit takes around 45 minutes. Totally worth visiting (with or without) children.
Laia — Google review
A must visit if you have any interest in birds and wildlife. I bought an identification book on Spanish birds and a lammergeier t-shirt. We took the 4euro tour through the museum and saw the good work they do caring for injured wildlife. Really great service from the woman at the desk. Highly recommend
Simon ( — Google review
Really good museum, opportunity to learn about the rare bearded vulture and the environmental challenges they face, also to meet some real birds of prey. Very good displays and only 5 euros entry.

A must if you comp up to old Ainsa. Fascinating museum dedicated to nature and conservation. Ascend the stairs through the mountain habitats. Also house some injured raptors, including bearded vultures.

Pozas de San Martín

4.1
(551)
Pozas de San Martín is a natural gem featuring swimming pools formed by a river, making it an ideal spot for a refreshing dip, especially in early summer when the water levels are higher. Accessible via a trail around boulders, this medium difficulty hike offers the flexibility to tailor the experience to your preference. The picturesque setting with rocky foundations and limestone cascade makes it perfect for a leisurely picnic.
Beautiful, secluded natural pools for swimming and jumping! We spent a nice afternoon here with our kids. It was peaceful and fun.
Laura D — Google review
It's a nice short and easy hike in a very peaceful place. The pools are connected by little waterslides made by nature. The narrow road to get here is covered by asphalt, so it's relatively easy to get here
Maria D — Google review
Fantastic pools after a nice walk. Continue to the next part of the trail to the waterfalls about an hour further along.
Richard — Google review
Short hike , 10 min. Beautiful view but was very dry, cannot go swimming. Saw a baby cow on our path.
Robert C — Google review
Beautiful place with a limestone cascade. The stream is very small in summer months but still enough for a quick bath at the beginning of July.
Karel P — Google review
It's quite a drive towards this dead-end road. The path is easily accessible (even doe small children). Must be a really nice place in summer, we visited in spring. There are 1,5 and 2.5 hour trials, but after 30 minutes you already see the 'pozas' (little lakes). It's nice and if you have time, you should visit it. It's not a must-see in my opinion.
Guy S — Google review
Really nice place to visit for a picnic and swim, but unfortunately i visited it in August and it was nearly dry. Otherwise i can imagine with flowing waters it would a fantastic place to spend an afternoon. The rocky foundation and natural pools are really nice. The GPS will lead you directly there. When you stop the care at the side of the road you will need to hike for about 15 minutes, which is a very comfortable hike. Visit early spring to enjoy the full effect of higher water levels.

This agency's offerings include 4x4 tours and snowshoe expeditions, allowing tourists to experience the beauty of this region in various ways.
This viewpoint is the ideal starting point on your hike into the ordesa valley and worth every drop of sweat to reach it. Breathtaking views!!

Great 'real' 4x4 trip from Ainsa up into the mountains to the top of the Cinca valley, well above the tree line and tarmac. From the refuge at the highest point of the trip we were looking across at melting glacial snow feeding multiple large waterfalls that feed that river. Guide Lauda is a chatty humorous guide and she provided a very good insight into the geology and fauna found in the high Pyrenese. The Spanish side of Pyrenees is outstanding with lots of intertwined deep river valleys with deep gorges. This region is a real outdoor activities mega zone. Not many Brits seem to have discovered the area. Maybe because not much promotion is done in English?

Very nice Medieval town with slate-roof stone houses, castle grounds, Romanesque church, town wall with various gate access...located on a hill at the confluence of two rivers. From the town you are able to walk on several footpaths across the countryside. It is quite touristic and has plenty of bars, restaurants and shops of all sorts, though keeping it warm and friendly, not too busy. Scenery is great with views of the nearby Pyrenees.

Real Monasterio de San Victorián, located on the slopes of La Pena Montanesa, is considered one of the oldest monasteries in Spain. Dating back to the 11th century, it holds a significant historical and cultural value. Visitors can easily access the monastery by car or take a scenic hike from nearby Fosado. The monastery offers guided tours and opens its doors for visits without requiring tickets.

(Translated by Google) Monument full of history located in a paradisiacal location, at mid-height on the slopes of the Peña Montañesa. Building unattractive due to time and history but which fortunately they have endeavored to restore a minimum of its former splendor. The access road is narrow and full of curves, but it is in very good condition and well signposted. The visit, as it is necessarily guided, is enjoyable and instructive. It is essential to check the schedules, which change according to the season, because otherwise you can end up with a good portion of wasted kilometers. The vicissitudes that the monastery has gone through over the centuries are surprising. Recommended for those of us who love mountains and art.

(Translated by Google) Its origins date back to the 5th century (note: 5 with a V), when the hermitage of San Martín de Asán was ruled by the holy Abbot Victorián, during the reign of the Visigoth Gesalaico (485-511). Antonio García Omedes writes on his website about Aragonese Romanesque: “San Victorián, at the head of the Sobrarbe, at the foot of the Sierra Ferrera, overlooking the region of L'Ainsa and the La Fueva valley, was to Sobrarbe what San Juan de la Peña was to Jacetania. With the Cluniac reform of Sancho Ramírez in 1071, it, like the Pinatense monastery, came under the direct protection of the Holy See. Its decline began in 1571, when its revenues were applied, by order of Pope Pius V, to the endowment of the new diocese of Barbastro. The confiscation of church property by Mendizabal in 1835 was its final blow.” After many years of being half-abandoned by public authorities, the Government of Aragon has been restoring it in several phases over recent years, and today the church and adjacent rooms, the crypt, and the cloister are open to visitors. There is even a schedule of guided tours and cultural activities in the summer. A visit is highly recommended, not only for the monastery itself, but also for its magnificent setting at the foot of the Sierra Ferrera. [Reissued July 6, 2025] It is a joy to see new areas restored and accessible, open to the public, with each visit. What a joy to enter the cloister and climb the tower.

Lost in the mountains, next to the mountain crag, it must have been important at one time. Now, to get there, you have to navigate narrow, winding paths. Be careful! We wanted to have lunch on Sunday. The one and only waiter was super busy, so we waited 5 minutes to be seated (there were empty tables though), but as he did not talk to us, we sat down and took a menu from the desk. The waiter came after another 5 minutes, angry and shouting at us how dare did we sit down and took the menu. So we got up straight away. Rude and unprofessional service.

Slow, unprofessional service, writing this review while waiting for the second course, already for 20 minutes. Rissotto made with the wrong rice type, served cold meat. We had to eat with our coats on coz the door was open and they told us if they turn the heating on the electricity shuts down. Menu price is 16€, I would not repeat, not really worth it.

The restaurant has received accolades from over 10 gastronomic guides and is known for its excellent food and service. Diners can enjoy outdoor seating under historic porches, providing a pleasant dining experience even in warm weather.
Nice restaurant in Ainsa town square. We had a fixed three course menu for a large group. Main course was lamb which was moist and well cooked. A very pleasant atmosphere, sitting outside under the arches. Good service. Would recommend.

Very good food. First we had ham ibetico of blackfooted pork. After. My daughter had froglegs, I had duck with raspberry sauce, my husband had a chuleton. Amazing food and service. Located under the porches built centuries ago, providing natural fresh temperatures even in the middle of a heatwave. I recommend it blindly to anyone in the area. And leave room for the desserts! (All of them home made, obviously).
Pau G — Google review
Although we had a nice evening, we feel scammed when walking away. Prices ex VAT on a menu are illegal. For the price you pay here for a main dish you would expect it to be an excellent dish. The meat we got tasted well, but besides the meat the plates were almost empty. For these prices, the food and service was so-so. Go to the neighbours at the other side of the square if you don’t want to get ripped off. Double the amount of food/drinks for half the price.
Martijn R — Google review
Food and presentation are just so-so, service is so-so and price is considered expensive compared to other restaurants in Ainsa. We ordered their specialty lamb chop and another meat stew dish. Both are very gamey for our liking. The only plus point is the ambience due to its location.
OhCarol — Google review
Worst soup. Do not get the Shepard's soup. It's disgusting. Overpriced. Do not recommend. edit : I seem to have angered the owner with my opinion of their horrible soup. I am sure that my small opinion will not damage their "gran prestigio". (I am taking a star because they brought my nationality into this, which has no relevance) The rest of my friends did not mind their food, so if you want to enjoy a tourist trap, with high prices, this is the place for you

The beef dishes were of good quality. But the poultry was dry and disappointing. The “local cheese selection” was four pieces of the same cheese and reflects a general lack of inspiration. At these prices it cannot be recommended.

Wow! This place is incredible. Having enjoyed numerous tapas in Spain, we were thoroughly impressed by the quality of the food served here. Each bite was even better than the last. I believe they must have a master-class chef working wonders in the kitchen. I'd give it a 6 out of 5 if I could.

We couldn’t fault this place. We stayed in Aínsa for three nights and ate here every night with a new dish every night . Too many meal standouts, from the tacos, to the asparagus, to the tapas assortment and to the chicken. High quality ingredients, filling and tasty. The Waitress was lovely and was impressive watching her attend to so many patrons each of our evenings. The White House wine was excellent and the bar had a wonderful, wholesome atmosphere each evening we were there.

Food and drinks (coffee or alcohol) all great. Relaxed with fun music. Culmination of why Spanish bars are so great. Came to the town for the biking, stayed for this kind of atmosphere.

Tapas bar
La Carrasca Tapas is a popular restaurant in Ainsa, known for its traditional, modern, and creative preparation of pintxos, tapas, boards, salads, and sandwiches. Located in the center of the old town, it offers an exceptional culinary experience with dishes such as grilled lamb, squid, and local cured meats.
Located right in the Plaza Mayor with a terrace overlooking the river valley, though the terrace is only open for dinner and not for drinks. The place runs like a well oiled machine, waiters taking over each other's tables. Friendly, competent, nothing fancy but honest good local food and good local wine. Would gladly visit again.

We decided to try another tapas restaurant and this one is close to where we stay and located in the center of the old city. It was busy hour so staff were in a bit of panic mode. Inside also does not look that clean. However! The food is just amazing. We were surprised by the quality of local lamb grill, and other tapas like cuttlefish and local sausages are all very delicious. Fried squid rings are average. And they have the best fries we have tried so far. (From Netherlands where fries are quite good) Recommend!

Great sitting at the rear of the restaurant under the trees looking out over the valley and to the mountains. Service was good and food was ok. Try it and make your own mind up

Good food, very nice setting. However, the older waiter (probably owner), was very rude. He only came to us at the end to bring us the check, not even looking at us in the eyes. He just handed us the bill, showed us the card reader, and said « pin » to indicate we had to fill in the card pin. After that was done, he just went away, not looking us in the eyes for 1 second, not saying a word. I know you are busy, but you are still serving customers, and saying « thank you, good bye » does not seem like that big of an ask.

We went twice to this place during our holiday in Ainsa, great tapas and raciones and when you reserve you sit nicely under the trees at the back of tge restaurant.

So good we went back the next day! Definitely caters to tourists, but the food is fantastic, and great for the price. Impressively trilingual staff (English/French/Spanish). We loved the lamb shank bao, the mini burgers, and the grilled graus sausage.

I wanted to have dinner with family and friends. The lousy welcome ruined everything!!! We left after 4 tapas! I spent too much money in there already…. And I speak fluently Spanish…

I had the lamb and it was great. The service was fast even though the place was very busy. Also a same location where you can go for a walk afterwards.
