Villa Farnese, a grand mansion constructed by the Farnese family, is adorned with an impressive collection of fine art and furniture. The villa's construction began in 1566 under the supervision of Cardinal Gianfracesco Gambara. Visitors are captivated by the intricate details in its architecture and paintings, making it a must-see destination. The well-organized tour provides insightful information about each space within the building.
A great place for gateway from busy Roman streets. The Cardinal Alessandro Farnese, the future Pope Paul III, really had a taste in selecting this place to build the family’s status symbol. The Villa is full of artistic paint walls, marbles and frescoes. Furthermore, an amazing garden with several fountains are truly impressive. The ticket is 10€ and definitely worth it.

An impressive villa both inside and out - the architecture is stunning, and the interiors are rich with detail. The gardens are beautifully designed, with fountains and lovely views overlooking the town of Caprarola. A hidden gem well worth visiting!

Villa Farnese (Palazzo Farnese), Caprarola If the Sistine Chapel leaves you awestruck and exhausted by the crowds, come to Villa Farnese. This place delivers the same jaw-dropping “how did humans paint all this?” feeling—without the shoulder-to-shoulder shuffle. Room after room is wrapped in frescoes, stucco, and symbolism; you feel the years of craft in every ceiling and cornice. The highlight for me is the Map Room: a wraparound atlas of the known world that reads like a Renaissance data wall. Stand in the center and you can imagine cardinals and captains reading coastlines, trade winds, and borders—more than decoration, it feels like a political and strategic dashboard of its day. I loved spotting details like “Scandia,” “Nova Spagna,” and a portrait labeled Marcus Polus watching over the cartography—tiny windows into how they saw the world. Other moments that stay with you: the elegant helical staircase (perfectly proportioned, endlessly photogenic), the grand salons with mythological ceilings that pull your eyes upward, and the serene courtyards that reset your senses between fresco marathons. Even the approach is cinematic—the palace rising above the town like a stage set. Practical bits: it’s far less crowded than Rome’s headline sights, so you can linger and actually look. Give yourself time; every wall rewards patience. Comfortable shoes help, and a weekday morning is ideal. Bottom line: wildly underrated and absolutely bucket-list worthy. Villa Farnese is history, art, and power—painted across stone—and one of the most satisfying cultural visits I’ve had in Italy.

Amazing place of great art, culture and architecture. A symbol of the Farnese political and religious dominance in the region. Definitely worth a day trip.

Beautiful palace. The last room with the maps is a gem! Crazy to see such a good representation of the world from 500 years ago so well preserved.
Andrew F — Google review
Fantastic, everyone should visit Caprarola just to explore this place. No crowds when we visited. Takes around 2 -2.5 hours to explore both inside and the extensive grounds outside. Make sure to wander right to the end to see the water features and statues there. There are many rooms to wander through but the map room is certainly one to spend time in. Would highly recommend to everyone.

Scala Regia del Vignola

The Scala Regia del Vignola, located in Palazzo Farnese in Caprarola (VT), is a masterpiece of Renaissance architecture. The itinerary through this stunning structure begins in the Stanza delle Guardie and leads to the Piano Nobile, passing through fourteen rooms arranged around a circular courtyard. The highlight of the visit is the spectacular helical staircase, which features completely frescoed vaults and walls that create a mesmerizing kaleidoscopic effect with vibrant colors.
The Scala Regia del Vignola, located in Vatican City, is a stunning architectural masterpiece designed by Giacomo Barozzi da Vignola. As you ascend its grand staircase, you're immediately enveloped in a sense of awe and majesty. The sweeping curves and intricate details of the staircase are a testament to Vignola's genius, showcasing the perfect harmony between form and function. Whether you're visiting as a tourist or attending a special event within the Vatican, the Scala Regia del Vignola is a breathtaking sight to behold. Its timeless beauty and historical significance make it a must-see attraction for anyone exploring the Vatican City.

(Translated by Google) The Scala Regia, located in the Palazzo Farnese, has a strong symbolic value and tells the story and rise of the Farnese family. This monumental staircase was commissioned by Cardinal Alessandro Farnese and, through a series of frescoes that develop from the bottom to the top, narrates the evolution of the family coat of arms. Starting from the unicorn, the initial symbol of the Farnese, the coat of arms is enriched and changed, including the lily and finally the six lilies, distinctive symbol of Pope Paul III, Alexander's grandfather, which dominates in the center of the vault above the staircase. Paul III represents a crucial figure for the family, since it was under his pontificate that the Farnese consolidated their political and social power, allying themselves with the greatest European courts of the time, including Charles V and the king of France.

(Translated by Google) It would be worth the trip just for this wonder... a unique masterpiece in its category that surpasses in beauty even Bramante's helical staircase which in the Vatican seems to have been the inspiration for the creation of this one. As you walk along it you will be surprised by the liveliness of the colors (you will have the sensation of having entered a kaleidoscope). Surrounded by peperino marble everywhere (columns, fascias, reliefs) it has the characteristic of having very low steps... perhaps because the cardinal wanted to travel along it on horseback or by carriage to his apartments on the main floor, find out (however there are no signs of hooves and this is a representation staircase for all intents and purposes, not a service one). The cover is the culmination of the masterpiece... have fun looking for unicorns among the many painted symbols. Look at the photos and videos I have published and the other reviews on Rome and its wonders that I have done and if I have been useful click on useful and if you want follow me (Original) Varrebbe il viaggio solo per questa meraviglia...un capolavoro unico nella sua categoria che oltrepassa in bellezza anche la scala elicoidale del Bramante che in vaticano sembra essere stata di ispirazione per la realizzazione di questa.

4.9
(9)
Sala del Mappamondo di Villa Farnese a Caprarola is an exceptional space that served as inspiration for the creation of the Galleria delle Carte Geografiche in the Vatican Museums. The walls display maps of the world's four parts discovered by renowned navigators, along with a complete world map on the back wall.
(Translated by Google) The Sala del Mappamondo, located inside Villa Farnese in Caprarola (VT), is one of the most admired; on its walls there are imposing and detailed maps of territories discovered until the second half of the 16th century; above the windows and doors there are portraits of the most important explorers; among the various rooms visited, this was the favourite. (Translated by Google) Another of those "additions" that mysteriously disappeared and then reappeared...and yet three years ago, when I added it, I even received record-breaking reviews. And yes...it's an absolute masterpiece that alone would be worth the visit to the Palace (and the price of admission), something comparable only to the map gallery of the Vatican Museums. Why are they so special? Simple: the geographical descriptions are impressively accurate for the time, considering that the reproductions of the maps were made in the 16th century and constitute a true "photograph" (even if it's a projection by the cartographers) of the knowledge of the time. This room, on the piano nobile, is a mirror image of the Fasti Farnesiani (which celebrated the grandeur of the House of Farnese), so important receptions and meetings undoubtedly took place here. The great navigators of the time (Amerigo Vespucci, Ferdinand Magellan, Marco Polo, Christopher Columbus, and Ferdinand Cortez) were portrayed above the doors and windows, and it is thanks to their explorations that the overall accuracy and proportions of the seas and continents are so high (although it is thought that the maps were updated in later periods). The author of these gems is unknown, although it is believed that the commission was given to Giovanni Antonio da Varese, known as "il Vanosino," assisted by Raffaellino Motta da Reggio and Giovanni De Vecchi (Vanosino had also created the cosmography for a loggia in the Vatican). And speaking of maps, the starry sky on the ceiling is magnificent, depicting the zodiac and the signs of the zodiac with references to ancient astronomy, while maintaining the centrality of the Church in the overall representation. In the panels of the fascia, between the cornice and the vault, separated by partially gilded stucco, are depicted the mythological allegories of the zodiac signs. Magnificent, without any doubt, it is the symbol of one of the most beautiful Renaissance palaces in Italy and is well worth a visit. Need some useful info? Then leave a like and check out the other reviews on Caprarola, especially on Rome and beyond.

Santa Teresa Caprarola is a stunning architectural gem nestled in the charming village of Caprarola, Lazio, Italy. Commissioned by Cardinal Odoardo Farnese in 1620 and designed by architect Girolamo Rainaldi, this church boasts exquisite frescoes, including a remarkable piece by Guido Reni. While guided tours are not available to delve into its intricate designs fully, the building's beauty speaks for itself.

(Translated by Google) On the hill in front of the one where the majestic Palazzo Farnese stands, almost as if to contrast the spiritual power with the secular one, stands a little apart this church founded in 1621 by Cardinal Odoardo Farnese. Not particularly interesting from an architectural point of view, it contains valuable works of painting such as a valuable Guido Reni (Virgin and Child with Saints Joseph and Teresa of Avila). The panorama that embraces Palazzo Farnese and the village of Caprarola is important. (Translated by Google) worth seeing... Absolutely worth seeing, unfortunately, there is no guided tour with a specific guide, to fully understand all the architectural ideas present in the church, commissioned by Cardinal Odoardo Farnese in 1620, built on the architect's project. Girolamo Rainaldi, employed by the important family, presents frescoes of considerable value including a valuable work by Guido Reni. Many of the friezes probably come from artists who worked at Palazzo Farnese, nearby. From the square in front you can enjoy an excellent view of the valley towards Rome with Soratte in plain sight and then an unusual view of Caprarola, in ancient times there was a path that went directly down to the town, with many vegetable gardens and cellars now unfortunately all in total abandonment! Rocca dei Prefetti di Vico

Castle
Rocca dei Prefetti di Vico, located in Caprarola, has a rich history dating back to the Middle Ages. Originally built as a defensive fortress by the Prefects of Vico in the 13th century, it witnessed power struggles among feudal lords. The town reached its peak during the 16th century when Alessandro Farnese became Pope Paul III and expanded its domain with lavish villas and castles.

(Translated by Google) In the 13th century, well before the arrival of the Farnese, Caprarola was a village under the government of the Prefects of Vico who built a defensive fortress here. In the 16th century with the construction of Palazzo Farnese and the consequent upheaval of the town's urban planning, the fortress was partially demolished and partially incorporated into what is now Palazzo Fusaro. A large tower survives, visible from Piazza Sicilia. Nestled in the heart of the city, Hostaria della Rosa Trattoria is a delightful gem that promises an unforgettable dining experience. This charming eatery boasts a warm and inviting atmosphere, enhanced by the professionalism and friendliness of its staff. Guests rave about the exceptional quality of food made from high-quality raw ingredients, with dishes bursting with flavor. The generous portions are complemented by thoughtful touches like complimentary pecorino cheese for pasta dishes and even water bowls for furry friends!
My wife and I discovered the restaurant by chance. In the afternoon we only had coffee. But already there we were captivated by the good atmosphere and the friendliness and courtesy of the staff and the owner Maurizio. In the evening we returned to dinner and were also not disappointed in culinary terms. We guarantee to return.

Friendly owner and the food was acceptable. We were victims of the fact that there was a group of 30 people coming in and we didn't get the attention or food we were expecting. They ran out of food and we had to order something else and finally the bill was a difficult to figure out. Whatever!

Nestled along the main road in Caprarola, Vineria Vignola (cucina e salumeria) is a charming spot that perfectly blends quality and warmth. This small bar and café offers everything from a quick espresso to an indulgent Italian breakfast featuring cappuccinos and croissants.

Small bar/café and winery located on the main road. You can go in for a quick espresso or you can sit down and have Italian style breakfast (cappuccino and croissant) later on an aperitivo served with few bites or a nice glass of wine. They have available also small plates to eat made with local products and seasonal. Few choices but very tasty! The bar inside is very small however there are a lot of tables outside. The only perk is that is right on the main road and there are always cars going right in front of it, if going with small children you always have to be very vigilant.

Best bar in Caprarola. The owner is a sommelier, the wines and spirits are on another level, food is hand made by him and his wife and there is a very friendly atmosphere. Multiple languages spoken in case you need directions to anywhere since they are locals. Thoroughly clean and very close to Palazzo Farnese, what else could you possibly want!

Day 2

Northeast side of town
For day 2, we recommend exploring the northeast side side of town. Start the day off with Casina del piacere, then wind down and take it easy by the time you get to La Via Dritta. All together, your day would be filled with about 3 hours of non-stop fun.

Casina del piacere

Historical landmark
Casina del Piacere is a part of the Villa Farnese, featuring frescoed rooms that were once the summer residence of President Luigi Einaudi and hosted Prince Charles of England in 1995. The upper gardens also house the Fontana del Giglio. Although the interior cannot be visited, the surrounding park area with green labyrinths and fountains is free to explore on certain days.
While the Casina “small house” is closed to the public, the surrounding well manicured labyrinth garden, statues, staircase and (non-functional) fountains are much more beautiful to see. I could imagine the Cardinal Farnese coming to visit his women in this “House of Pleasure.” His kept women had an separate entrance in the rear of the building away from the main villa. I created a scene in my mind where the Cardinal would arrive by horse before ascending the staircase while water flowing through the phallic dolphin fountain foreshadowed his erection and later release of fluid. The woman awaiting his Highness on the balcony in a flowing white gown to meet him. The satyr sculptures here announce that there is no shame. It’s well worth a visit to think on the history of excess and power and what may go on in the present day in secret.

The Casina del Piacere (literally the little house of pleasure) is inside the gardens of Palazzo Farnese (Villa Farnese) in Caprarola, 50 kilometres north of Rome in the province of Viterbo. Initially intended for hunting it then became Alessandro Farnese’s secret place with an amazing view on the Roman countryside.

(Translated by Google) Entranced by the palace, this beautiful complex will seem like nothing to you despite its beautiful Italian gardens and its beautiful fountains. The perspective coming from the villa is breathtaking, among the most beautiful of the many in Lazio (compare with Villa Lante, ed.). His casino - if it can be visited - is very pretty but not special.... everything is very harmonious even though it was started by Vignola and then finished by one of his collaborators. The destination, as the name suggests, was pleasure...delighting one's guests, not necessarily with hunting which actually seems not to have been much loved by Alessandro Farnese. A piece of advice... once you get on, concentrate on admiring one by one the many statues that adorn the two squares of the gardens in front and behind. Look at the photos I posted and the other reviews on Rome and Lazio and its wonders that I have done and if I have been useful click on useful and if you want follow me (Original) Estasiati dal palazzo questo bel complesso vi sembrerà nulla nonostante i suoi bei giardini all'italiana e le sue belle fontane. (Translated by Google) This is the town's cathedral, but it seems only the townspeople know about it. Its entrance is on Via Nicolai—the famous "straight street" that bisects the village, providing a backdrop for the square overlooked by Palazzo Farnese. It was rebuilt by Valadier after a fire that completely destroyed it, but it had already been renovated between the late 16th and early 17th centuries, coinciding with the construction of the aforementioned straight street. Externally, it is very simple, and the façade facing Palazzo Riario is rather anonymous, while the other sides and the apse are hidden due to the adjacent buildings, including the two bell towers (one of which is from the original 16th-century structure). Inside, however, it is bright, with three naves, and preserves a 15th-century panel painting of Saint Savior, a 16th-century Assumption of Mary, and a 17th-century Incredulity of Saint Thomas, as well as a beautiful frescoed ceiling. The white marble ciborium, also from the 15th century, is particularly interesting, set into the center of the apse's wooden choir. The organ on the counterfaçade is not ancient, but it's about a century old. It's still worth a visit during your stroll through the village. Need some useful info? Then leave a like and check out the other reviews on Caprarola, especially Rome, and beyond.

Nestled in the heart of Tuscia Viterbese, Trattoria del Cimino dal 1895 is a charming family-run establishment that has been delighting visitors for generations. Just a stone's throw from the stunning Palazzo Farnese in Caprarola, this trattoria offers an inviting atmosphere where attentive service meets authentic local cuisine. Diners can indulge in a delightful platter featuring regional cured meats and cheeses, alongside handmade pastas that truly showcase the essence of Italian cooking.
Stopped here for lunch on a Sunday whilst en route from Orvieto to Fiumicino airport. First of all, call ahead to book a table - it was packed and I'm glad we'd reserved a seat on the outdoor terrace. The food is excellent; we went for an antipasti board with local meat and cheese, a couple of pastas (rabbit and beef) and then a hazelnut cake for dessert. The antipasti also came with some ragu and tuscan beans on bread which were all delicious. The pasta dishes were excellent - lovely al dente pasta and excellent, rich ragu. The cake was superb - lots of nuts with just enough cake to hold it together, the sauce (kind of an enriched custard) was delicious. A nice bottle of Vermentino was about 25 EUR. All in all, a superb trattoria with excellent food and a great place to stop. The drive between Orvieto and Rome was also lovely and made the trip home much better than stopping on the autostrada and eating some bad food before catching a flight!

Chalet Italia is a charming family-run establishment that offers an inviting atmosphere and delicious homemade cuisine. Nestled at a higher elevation, it boasts stunning panoramic views of the Soratte mountain and the Tiber valley, making it an ideal spot for warm summer evenings. The outdoor seating enhances the experience during daylight hours with breathtaking vistas.

Rudolf J — Google review
Excellent food. The Tagliata (beef) is spectacular. Friendly family business. I gave 4 out of 5 stars due to the season: They obviously can't keep tables in the garden in January, but in the summer that would make it full 5 stars (I've done it a few times). Splendid atmosphere and perfect climate during the hottest summer months (this place is well above the sea level, and that makes a difference). During hours of daylight, great view if you book a good table. But the magic of full moon compensates for that in the garden where many of the trees are probably at least hundred years old. Nice parking facilities, which is so often a real pain in the ar*e when trying to park a larger car in Italy anywhere, especially near a popular restaurant.
