Sacro Bosco, also known as the Park of the Monsters, is a unique and surreal park located in Bomarzo, Italy. Commissioned in the 16th century by Prince Pier Francesco Orsini as a way to cope with personal grief and wartime brutality, this park features grotesque rock carvings, stone statues, follies, and temples. It is often referred to as a hidden gem of Italy due to its unusual sculptures that date back centuries.
Great place for a nice walk/hike in a weird historical park. Great for children too. Free entry for children under 4. Not touristy which is a plus!

We really enjoyed our visit. Amazing sculpture work. To see the handmade works and chisel marks. The restaurant was nice, we got the steak. Very nice and very reasonable prices. There is also a cafe. Definitely worth a visit.
Trevor M — Google review
Absolutely loved every inch of this place, and well worth the admission price. A wonderful place to bring kids, and the restaurant served us the most beautiful Fillet Steak we have had in a long time. Definitely worth a trip.

Absolutely incredible! We ditched seeing Vatican City after a long road trip across Italy, found the poster on the side of the highway and decided to drop in. Tons of parking including with a camper, kind staff, clean ground incl washroom. Soo soo soo many unique neat sculptures. There's some wheelchair ramps to washrooms but not to the sites that we could find.
Terra S — Google review
I really liked this exhibition, the statues were huge and mesmerizing! The tilted building was also fun! The price (13€) was a bit overpriced for the size of the park, but still I would recommend it!
Dimitris ( — Google review
Such a magical place. Its surrealist stone sculpture garden. We were there in Jan but would have been great to be in warmer weather since its located in hilly landscape with streams and grass area. We spent about 1 hr walk around. Its easy terrain for slow walk but different elevation makes the park interesting. Love the face entryway, elephant sculpture and leaning building. Will definitely watch the movie where the entire movie scene was shoot in this park.
Myungjin K — Google review
My husband and I brought our 4 kids on a Sunday. It was great, really beautiful and interesting, and there is a picnic area as well as a playground, both are excellent features, however, it is a small park and costs a family of 6 (with 4 children aged 13 and younger) 58 euros. There is no family rate. Furthermore, according to the website this will increase in January 2026. Would I recommend, yes. Do I think it was overpriced, yes, if you just walk through and dont spend time there. However, if you spend the entire day there it seems a better price :) also no refunds for bad weather.

Small restored quirky garden of bizarre statues commissioned by a middle ages count who was a little off his rocker. Worth a side trip but a little costly.

Nestled in the charming hamlet of Bagnaia, Villa Lante is a stunning example of 16th-century Italian Mannerist architecture and garden design. This exquisite complex features meticulously manicured lawns, elegant hedges, and an array of enchanting fountains that create a serene atmosphere. The centerpiece is a magnificent statue crafted by Giambologna, adding to the artistic allure of the gardens.
Villa Lante, Viterbo – A Hidden Gem of Italian Garden Design Villa Lante in Bagnaia (near Viterbo) is an absolute must-visit for lovers of Renaissance architecture, stunning gardens, and intricate water features. This 16th-century villa, designed by the legendary architect Giacomo Barozzi da Vignola, is a masterpiece of Italian Mannerist garden design. The real highlight here is the breathtaking garden rooms, each with its own unique design and layout, perfectly integrated with the natural landscape. The water features are truly spectacular—flowing fountains, cascades, and carefully designed waterworks create a sense of harmony and elegance. The Fountain of the Moors and the famous water chain that runs down the terraces are particularly mesmerizing. While the villa itself is smaller than some grand palaces, the two symmetrical casini (small lodges) add to its charm, adorned with beautiful frescoes and offering panoramic views of the gardens. The entire site feels peaceful and enchanting, making it perfect for a leisurely stroll. Opening Hours & Ticket Prices (as of 2025): • Opening Times: Usually open Tuesday–Sunday, from 8:30 AM – 7:30 PM (last entry at 6:45 PM). Closed on Mondays. • Entry Fee: Around €8 per person, with discounts for students and seniors. Tips for Visitors: • Visit early in the morning to enjoy the tranquility before larger crowds arrive. • The gardens are best explored at a slow pace—bring comfortable shoes! • If you’re a photography enthusiast, the play of light and water in the gardens provides fantastic opportunities for pictures. Villa Lante is an underrated jewel of central Italy, perfect for a relaxing day trip from Rome or Florence. A true paradise for history and garden lovers alike! Highly recommended.

The garden is on constructions.. It's not that clean and organized that we were expected it to be.. You have a really big potential to be an amazing place that's for now it's not like that.. We waited about half an hour to get in it because it was really windy day and they decided to open it on time.
Rachel R — Google review
It is still being renovated and only one fountain is working but the expected time of completion is May 2026 so, for now, the tickets have been reduced to 5 euro
Roberta D — Google review
Has real potential but the majority is closed for renovation which is why the ticket is reduced to 5 euros. The contractors have fenced off the majority of the garden so our visit was short. I would suggest managing expectations vs the historic photos you see. You may want to wait until the work is completed before visiting. Once the work is done I’m sure it will be fantastic
Paul T — Google review
Historic place to visit and learn about Architecture and Italian architect Vignola who designed the Villa
Julio H — Google review
Such a romantic garden! Admire how the fountains were arranged and manipulated to creat a beautiful landscape. The garden is not massive so it gives a very intimate and quiet atmosphere. Definitely recommend a visit in late afternoon to take advantage of the softened sunlight.
Peach I — Google review
Even one star is too much. Almost everything here is closed off, but they still charge you 5€ for admission. We asked at the entrance if what was left to see was wheelchair accessible. They said that the gardens were and the buildings ground floor. A bad joke. You can't even get into the two remaining open rooms or the last open plateau in the garden, with the last water fountain. We were really looking forward to the villa, since very little in Italy is wheelchair accessible anyway. I’m just sad and disappointed.
Kris — Google review
During my recent trip to the charming town of Viterbo, I had the pleasure of exploring the renowned Renaissance garden of Villa Lante in Bagnaia. Covering an area of approximately four hectares, the garden is spread across three main terraces and is considered one of the most famous Renaissance gardens in the world. The garden's most notable feature is its unique "prospect garden" design, which creates an illusion of depth and perspective through the strategic use of fountains, water features, and architectural elements. Walking through the garden, I couldn't help but be struck by the stunning beauty of the meticulously manicured hedges, colorful flower beds, and intricate stonework. As I made my way through the garden's winding paths and hidden corners, I discovered a variety of fascinating features and surprises, including hidden grottos, whimsical sculptures, and breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside. It was easy to see why Villa Lante is one of the most visited attractions in Tuscia, with approximately 85,000 visitors per year. Overall, my visit to Villa Lante was a truly unforgettable experience, and I would highly recommend it to anyone visiting Viterbo. Whether you are an art lover, a history buff, or simply someone who appreciates the beauty of nature, the garden's stunning design, intricate details, and serene ambiance are sure to leave you spellbound.

Ferento - Ancient Roman City

Historic Walking Areas
Ferento, an ancient Roman city located in the Tuscan countryside, offers a peaceful and contemplative experience amidst impressive Roman ruins. The well-preserved theater and the foundations of Roman baths are among the notable remnants of this once wealthy city. Unlike the bustling ruins in Rome, Ferento is often quiet, allowing visitors to wander around at their own pace. Managed by volunteers from the Tuscia Archeology group, the site provides informative captions and a deep explanation of its excavation and history.
We arrived just after 1PM and the site was locked up so we walked up and down the road and decided it was impressive enough to wait until it opened at 2. Deb had a snooze while I caught up on emails and then we went to the entrance just after 2. The site is run by volunteers from the Tuscia Archeology group and the lady that was there was fantastic. She explained about the site and how they had excavated different areas and the sheer size of it before telling us about the history and eventual destruction of the city. It really bought it to life and such passion was lovely to see. The whole time we were there we were the only visitors which is rather tragic for such a well preserved site. It could certainly do with having a higher profile as we only knew of it due to me browsing Google maps. The theatre is still in use for summer concerts and was designed to seat 3000 people. The bath complex has also been excavated but the rest of the city is on private land so is still buried.

Outstanding service by the person in charge, that gave us a deep explanation about the excavation and the history of this unfortunate city finally destroyed in the Middle Age by Viterbo’s rulers. Nice walk around the ruins, lovely landscape and surroundings, highly recommended.

Great place. Very interesting lots of information. It suggests it opens at 14.00 but people were working there and said we could look around.
Andrew W — Google review
I love this peaceful place out in the Tuscan countryside. Some very impressive Roman ruins that you can wander around and contemplate the historic past. Never very busy, we've been several times and often had the place to ourselves. There are informative captions, no tour guides and no entry fee just a man/woman in a hut who may or may not ask you for a donation. Such a contrast to the ruins in Rome. Watch out for humming bird moths in the vetch plants at the back of the site by the Roman road. Also watch out for the rangy wild cats that like to play with and devour the huge locusts that also frequent the site.
Derek S — Google review
Incredible ruins that are still under active excavation. No wait times and very few other people. Entry price is by donation and is very worth the drive!!
Amy L — Google review
A very tranquil place. Spent a great couple of hours wandering around the ancient ruins and exploring.

Absolutely magical! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Sant'Angelo, the fairy tale village (Sant'Angelo di Roccalvecce), is a hidden gem that stepping into feels like walking straight into a storybook. The map guided us flawlessly through the charming, narrow streets, each turn revealing another breathtaking mural of beloved fairy tales. From Alice in Wonderland to Puss in Boots and Don Quixote, the artwork is not only stunningly beautiful but has also breathed new life into this historic village, transforming it into an open-air museum. It's the perfect destination for families, art lovers, or anyone seeking a truly unique and whimsical experience. The village itself is perched in a picturesque part of Italy, offering lovely views and a tranquil atmosphere far from the hustle and bustle. We easily spent hours wandering, taking photos, and simply soaking in the magical ambiance. The initiative to revitalize the village through art is inspiring, and the result is a place that sparks joy and wonder in visitors of all ages. Don't miss the chance to discover this enchanting corner of the world – it's an unforgettable experience!

Sant'Angelo di Roccalvecce is not just a town; it's a living, breathing storybook. Arrived in Bagnaia without any plans for lunch before going to Villa Lante and tried this restaurant. Couldnt have found a better place if I had researched it beforehand. The staff is extremely friendly and open (not every place is when you travel solo), the space is well appointed (and huge) and the food exceptional. Excellent value for the money. Highly recommended

Our lunch was amazing especially the linguini and clam. The best I have ever had. The sauce was light but full of flavor. We also had the mussels and clams which also were very good. The wine and espresso were also excellent.

There was a nice looking restaurant, Il Borgo, on the town square so we sat down and Deb perused the menu, trying to translate the Italian. I'm not sure how successful she was - I had pumpkin ravioli which was superb. I think she was expecting fish soup but a bowl arrived festooned with crabs claws and a whole family of baby octopoii floating in the sauce. I didn't actually look until I'd finished mine as I'd probably have chucked but Deb is made of sterner stuff and ate the lot! Service was excellent, the food was beautifully presented and prices were good.

The Palazzo dei Papi di Viterbo, also known as the Papal Palace, is a stunning example of Gothic architecture in the Lazio region. Built between 1255 and 1266 to house popes seeking refuge in Viterbo, it features decorative stonework and frescoes that showcase its historical significance. The palace's elegant seven-arched loggia and a charming courtyard with city views make it a must-see attraction.

The Palazzo dei Papi is one of Viterbo’s most important monuments, built when Pope Alexander IV (1254-1261) moved the papal curia to Viterbo in 1257 and had the former bishop’s palace expanded. The palace includes the famous Aula del Conclave, which hosted the longest papal election in history, lasting about 33 months! You and get a ticket, and audio guide, for a very reasonable €10 which gives you access to the museum, cathedral and Palazzo. The audio tour is very detailed and a map is provided which shows the main points of the locations.

The Papal Palace in Viterbo hosts an exhibition that captures the first conclave (literally "under lock and key") that was held starting in 1268AD and took nearly three years to select the new Pope. That was Gregory X, who then ordered that the conclave method be used for future selection. It's very well done, including multilanguage commentary, VR, and animation to tell the story, and a must visit for History buffs and for Catholics interested in key stages in the development of the church.

The cathedral of San Lorenzo is located in the center of Viterbo, and it is considered to be one of the most important religious buildings in Italy. The original construction was completed in the 12th century, but it has been extensively rebuilt over time. The current structure features a black-and-white bell tower that is one of the most recognizable features of Viterbo.
A beautiful reminder of a period where Viterbo was the chosen seat and sanctuary of popes. It was peaceful and not at all busy when I visited so it was perfect for me. A single ticket allows you to visit the cathedral, the papal palace and the cathedral museum next door. There are also tourist audio guides which are great and allow you to listen to the commentary at your own pace.
Planettall — Google review
The cathedral is very plain apart from a couple of the side chapels, as when it was restored after the second world War it primarily followed its medieval precedent, rather than its subsequent baroque developments, Definitely not the most beautiful church in Viterbo, if you're short on time or money.
B — Google review
A Majestic Symbol of Viterbo’s Soul The Cathedral of San Lorenzo is a place that truly leaves a mark. Perched on the highest point of Viterbo’s historic centre, this striking Romanesque cathedral, with its elegant Renaissance façade and soaring bell tower, is a masterpiece of solemnity and grace. By day, the cathedral’s understated beauty blends perfectly with the timeless charm of Piazza San Lorenzo. But by night — as seen in this photo — it becomes something truly special: illuminated with soft golden lights, casting long shadows across the square, exuding a quiet, almost mystical presence. Steeped in history, this cathedral once hosted papal coronations and remains a powerful testament to Viterbo’s medieval importance. Step inside and you’ll find a peaceful, contemplative interior, rich with centuries of faith, history, and resilience. Whether you’re religious or simply an admirer of architecture and history, this cathedral is a must-see. A moving, unforgettable stop on any visit to Viterbo.
SUR E — Google review
Viterbo Cathedral was built on the site of an early Christian church (287AD) and reflects the early martyrs of the Christian faith, as believers were killed for refuting the pagan Roman gods. It's nowhere near as ornate as later Catholic churches, but with simplicity also comes beauty, and the Nave is a place for quiet reflection and respect for the past.
Patrick C — Google review
a beautiful blend of Romanesque and Gothic architecture, offering a peaceful atmosphere perfect for quiet reflection. The tall columns, crafted arches, and subtle frescoes add to its charm.
M E — Google review
The cathedral had a gorgeous ceiling although the building itself was surprisingly plain. There were the remains of some wall frescoes by the altar and one of the chapels had the best example of tromp l'oeil we'd ever seen. The bronze plated doors were impressive too. Entrance was included with the Papal Palace ticket next door.

The oldest records of the presence of a house of worship dedicated to St. Lawrence the Martyr on the present Cathedral Hill date back to the early Middle Ages. As early as 775 there is mention of a pieve of S. Laurentii and Petrus, its presbyter, and in a bull of Pope Leo IV (852) there still appears a reference to it. Full consecration, however, would come in 1192, the year Celestine III united Viterbo, Blera, Tuscania and Cencelle into a single diocese, insignifying the church with the title of Cathedral. Between the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, important interventions were planned on the layout of the Cathedral of St. Lawrence, which, however, remained unexpressed (Antonio da Sangallo). During the 16th century there were conspicuous interventions on the structure.

Plaza
Piazza del Plebiscito is a major attraction in Viterbo, Italy. It serves as the city's focal point and is surrounded by medieval and Renaissance buildings. The Palazzo dei Priori, a notable municipal building, stands on one side of the square. Visitors can also admire the Chiesa della Santissima Trinita from its free-to-enter courtyard.
What a fantastic city! Viterbo is a city in central Italy and was the seat of the popes in the 13th century. We had cocktails and spent an hour or so people watching in this amazing piazza (Piazza del Plebiscito) which also includes the Palazzo dei Priori, Prefettura di Viterbo, and Chiesa di Sant'Angelo in Spatha.

They sold me a large shed. It took months to arrive (from France). Their people erected it incorrectly. The roof blew off after two weeks. The doors were on the wrong way round. I've spent a almost €1,000 putting it right. I'll never enter again

Trattoria L'Archetto

Restaurant
Trattoria L'Archetto is a charming and intimate kitchen located on one of the most elegant streets in Viterbo, via Saffi. The restaurant offers seasonal homestyle dishes and open-air seating, creating a delightful dining experience. The menu features authentic Viterbese cuisine with specialties such as bujone di pecora, pollo alla viterbese, and raviolacci con le castagne, all priced between 6 and 8 euros.
This restaurant was just down the street from our air bnb. Let me tell you… we were in Rome previously and went to a restaurant with really high reviews, and it was crap compared to this. This was the best pasta I’ve ever had. I had the carbonara and my partner had the Ragu. I am still dreaming of it. One recommendation would be to serve better bread, like a focaccia would be the cherry on top. We also got the tiramisu… wow. The entire bill was €35…. Our bill at the place in Rome was €60
Alexandra E — Google review
Where do I begin?! From the food, to the service, to the atmosphere, this gem is truly a breath of fresh air. The charming outdoor alleyway, lit by a chain of lightbulbs woven with vines and situated underneath a cozy stone arch, seemed to transport my friend and I to a place and time where no cares were given and all was merry – if ever a time existed... SERVICE: Our lovely servers, especially the warm, exuberant Elisabetta, paid special attention to us and even offered an extra digestivo of a Liquore di Nocciola (hazelnut liquor that tasted like Nutella!). FOOD: Portions were very generous for the cost: big secondi dishes for only €13... doesn't exist in big cities like Rome or Florence! All meat dishes were tender and you could tell were slow-cooked with a lot of heart and care. The pasta dish I got my second visit was almost as thin as angel hair and had an inventive, delicate hazelnut pesto and slow-cooked orange and red pomodorini. Perfect, light dinner. FRESHNESS: I saw a waitress swap out a little paper menu posted outside the front door at lunch, showing an entirely new menu. This was confirmation that all food is fresh, seasonal, and cooked day off. Please, do not deprive yourself of the experience of having dinner here. Lunch is good too, but the charm of the evening atmosphere is too gorgeous to pass up!

I found this to be a perfect and enjoyable meal. Traditional style and food, served without fuss, good prices, good selection of wine. It was a lovely experience. Of note were the beans with onions, the fried chickory, the pasta carbonara and the pasta with white Ragu.

Restaurant
Il Gargolo is a charming local trattoria located in the historic center of Piazza Della Morte. It offers a delightful dining experience with outdoor seating and a friendly, helpful staff. The restaurant is known for its delicious seafood dishes, such as the grilled octopus served over potato puree, which perfectly balances bold flavors with traditional Italian home cooking. Visitors can expect an interesting and original menu paired with impeccable service and wine.
Stumbled on this restaurant by chance tonight. Setting is lovely under the trees and the waitress was lovely. We really enjoyed the eggplant parmigiana we shared the spaghetti with clams and fried artichoke was the best pasta we’ve had on our 3 week trip around Italy. Most enjoyable meal and service
Cathy G — Google review
Piazza della Morte in Viterbo is a charming, intimate square that carries the historical ambiance of the medieval city. It’s a peaceful spot, tucked away from the busier parts of town, which makes it an ideal place to enjoy a meal at Il Gargolo. This ristorante we come for many years now and why? The spot , the piazza due to historical setting with the big fontain and the tipical italian lights which gives a Romantic atmosphere, the food is very good as the large variety of choice they have and can suggest. The staff is so nice and super friendly and just want to give you a best night out. They have local products and cuisine. All combined so you’ll have the perfect total package for dining romantically together or with your family.
Rimootjes R — Google review
The service and atmosphere are excellent, especially on spring days when you can sit outside under the trees. We been three adults, and knowing that both of us the food needs improvement. None of us finished our dish and one of us ordered another dish and didn't eat it either. It's a shame because the restaurant is very nice
Yoram Z — Google review
The pasta with guangiale, pecorino & truffle was so good that I’m literally thinking about it weeks later. Thought that it definitely deserved a good review.
Emily K — Google review
Excellent choice for a Saturday lunch, super location by the fountain on the piazza. Our server was great and allowed us to practice our marginal Italian on her even though she spoke perfect English 🙂 Put me down as a huge fan of the tonnarelli, perfect pasta and so generous withe the pecorino and guanciale- delizioso! The wife's got the polpo (octopus) antipasto, so tender and full of flavour, and a very generous portion as well😊 We will be certain to return on our next visit to Viterbo!
Brian V — Google review
Excellent food! All, or most of pastas, can be made gluten free and many of antipasto and seconds are already gluten free. Upon asking about gluten free options, the staff gave me the usual disclaimer about the kitchen not being dedicated gluten free and bring unable to guarantee no cross contamination, but I tried two antipastos and a pasta and had no symptoms. Food was delicious and the outdoor seating atmosphere was delightful.
Robin G — Google review
Great food, good service. We tried the octopus with potato purée, antipasto plate, truffle pasta and bolognese. All were tasty but the octopus was excellent. Definitely will order again!
Elaine P — Google review
Great wine selection, clean and cozy atmosphere. While primarily meat based, they accommodated and made a lovely vegan risotto which was a good change of pace from pasta pomodoro everywhere else in Italy.

(Translated by Google) Very good food, apart from the small parking everything else was fine. We took a classic piadina with sausage and mushrooms and a 5-grain piadina with rocket, cherry tomatoes and parmesan. Both tasty and not at all dry. We will definitely be back. (Original) Cibo molto buono, a parte il parcheggio piccolo per il resto tutto bene. Abbiamo preso una piadina con salsiccia e funghi classica e una piadina ai 5 cereali con rucola, pachino e grana. The coffee and dessert were also good. (Original) Ottima piadina! Fermati per un pranzo veloce senza pretese, rimasti piacevolmente stupiti della bontà della piada e freschezza del ripieno.
