This Romanesque bridge with arches & defense towers dates back to the Middle Ages.
This medieval bridge is very beautiful and really cool to walk on. There is a lot of information along the bridge that tells about its history as well as the history of the surrounding town. It is free to access and has a lot of shopping and dining nearby. There is also parking close by that is very cheap. This is a wonderful stop for families, solo travelers and couples of all ages.

It's a very picturesque Romanesque bridge. Free to cross and nicely lit up at night. The town of Besalú is nice and it is worth staying overnight if you can.

Beautiful medieval old town worth visiting if you want a day trip from Barcelona. It's a nice change from the coastal cities and has different things to explore than the usual beach vibes.

Lovely spot in Besalu with the perfect vantage point of aeeing the medieval city and the Besalu bridge. Our dogs also loved walking around

Pont de Besalú is the iconic bridge connecting historic Besalú to the rest of Cataluña. The history of the bridge’s origins are somewhat unknown - however documentation of the bridge is known to exist from early in the 11th century. Defensive towers were added to it later and yet to this day it welcomes visitors from around the world to and dazzles them as the visitors enter historic Besalú.

A visit to pretty Besalu is a must. It's very picturesque, great bridge and a beautiful church. Wish I'd had time to spend longer there.

There are plenty of information signs around the town covering the bridge, the old 10th century tower ruins and even early electrical hydro power plants.

Exhibit
"Exposició S.XV - Alma Cubrae" is a charming museum showcasing a medieval exhibition that has surprised many visitors. The exhibit features high-quality reproductions with intricate details, and it offers a complete audio guide accessible via mobile phones in multiple languages. Visitors are encouraged to bring their headphones for an immersive experience. Additionally, the site provides opportunities for interactive experiences such as dressing up for souvenir photos and touching armor pieces.
Fascinating bijou exhibition of original and replica medieval weapons, armour and artefacts. Lovely people, their enthusiasm is infectious and their passion palpable. Where else can you see a trebuchet up close and work out the viability of building one in your own back garden. Highly recommended.

An interesting exhibition showing 15th-century medieval life. It was very useful to be able to scan a QR code and have all the explanations available in English to read or as an audio. I look forward to returning on my next visit to Besalu.

The owner gives a detailed explanation of the first few mannequins which are so impressive. Very good value for money and incredibly interesting.

Sant Pere in Besalú is a Benedictine monastery with origins dating back to the 10th century, although it underwent restoration in the 12th century. The modestly adorned monastery features depictions of Herod the Great and various animals. It is situated in a spacious square surrounded by cafes and souvenir shops, making it a must-visit for those interested in religious architecture.
Sant Pere de Besalú is a magnificent Romanesque monastery located in the heart of Besalú, Spain, and is one of the town’s most iconic landmarks. Founded in 977 by Count-Bishop Miró, the monastery has a rich history intertwined with the region’s religious and cultural development. The church, which was consecrated in 1003, features a striking façade adorned with intricately carved details and a distinctive central nave that reflects the architectural grandeur of the Romanesque period. The interior is equally impressive, with its austere stone walls and vaulted ceilings that evoke a sense of solemnity and reverence. The monastery’s octagonal bell tower is a standout feature, offering a unique architectural element that adds to the site’s visual appeal. Over the centuries, Sant Pere de Besalú has served as a spiritual center and a symbol of the town's medieval past. Today, it stands as a well-preserved monument, attracting visitors who are drawn to its historical significance and architectural beauty. Whether you are a history buff, an architecture enthusiast, or a pilgrim, Sant Pere de Besalú offers a deeply enriching experience, connecting you to the profound religious heritage of Catalonia.

Església de Sant Vicenç de Besalú is a beautiful church dating back to the 12th century, with some parts believed to have existed since the 10th century. The Romanesque-style building combines elements of transition to Gothic architecture, evident in its rose window and side chapel. Visitors can explore the interior by lighting it up with a coin, although there have been some issues reported with this.
Amazing Romanesque-style church located in the heart of the town of Besalú. Also a good starting point to visit the rest of the town. Definitely worth a visit for those in the area to admire its beautiful architecture and artwork, and experience the church's peaceful atmosphere.

Església de Sant Vincenç de Besalú is a church that dates back to the later half of the 10th century. It is considered to be a mix of Romanesque and Gothic architecture. It is located in Besalú’s historic center and can easily seen when exploring the rest of Besalú; alone it is average.
Nanita — Google review
It goes against Christianity to charge patrons to enter a church. They have blocked off the entrance with a woman sitting right at the front saying there is a fee to step inside. The things I have seen out here I have never encountered in any other country I have visited. Anything odd goes. Expect to pay money to enter. They also don’t allow photos if you haven’t paid. They make a tourist trap even in the house of God. How incredibly immoral of them.

When visiting Besalu, don't miss out on the opportunity to indulge in the local cuisine. The Pont Vell restaurant offers a delightful experience with its picturesque outdoor terrace that overlooks the river below. This charming establishment allows guests to savor traditional dishes such as escudella soup and trinxat, showcasing the rich culinary heritage of the Garrotxa volcanic area.
Really gorgeous location... What a find. The food was really fantastic and the staff were all friendly and engaging. The stairs down to the restaurant help build excitement for whats to come... Feels like you're discovering a hidden gem. We brought our 2 month old son and he was very welcomed. You would need to wear a child that small as there is no way you're getting a pushchair in there. But if you're flexible its worth it. We'd go back here again for sure!

Honestly one of the best meals I’ve ever had. Easily rivals Michelin Star food. The setting is stunning, the staff are very attentive and knowledgeable and the food is simply incredible.
Jamie E — Google review
It was my first time trying a Michelin star restaurant. I would say I expected more of an experience but overall the food was good and the place is cozy. I love how they used olive oil on the dessert which was something new for me to taste. Overall a nice experience if you are visiting Besalú.

Wonderful. From the food to the service, everything was perfect. Do not miss this. We got the menu. So good! Our waitress was so professional, she was the best. We had never received such an amazing level of service. Her name was Kiara. The way the staff worked together was inspiring, it was so impressive to see them working in such harmony. Add to this the perfect view of the Besalu bridge and you get an amazing experience, coupled with the superb food - it is worth every penny. I would go back to Besalu just to eat there again and try all the items on the menu. I highly recommend anyone who visits this area to invest the time and the effort to come and visit this awesome place. It will; being you closer to each other and comfort you in ways food usually cant. Kudos to the team - all of you. You guys are awesome. The food was fantastic.

A wonderful family owned restaurant, in the center of Besalu and in business since 1981. You can sit indoors but the terrace has great views of the medieval bridge. They have a dinner menu out of which you can choose starter, main and dessert for 45 Euros pp without drinks. Definitely worth the experience. We had chicken filled cannellonis as starter, sweet sour rabbit (speciality of the house) and cheese cake with coffee cortado. Enjoyed all the dishes, great dinning experience!
Jorge P — Google review
Really nice location in Besalu. We were seated under the arch on the Teraza. The waitress was very good and attentive. I had the house specialty of sweet and sour Rabbit and it was superb. My wife got the risotto and it was undercooked and not very flavorful. The cheesecake was quite different and also was somewhat bland. All in all we enjoyed the ambiance and our visit to Besalu.
Brian G — Google review
Incredible location. Excellent staff. Desserts amazing. Had all the ingredients to be a five star experience except … the starters and main dishes were really average. If they could improve this it would be literally be a perfect lunch experience.
Kate B — Google review
Delicious food in a fantastic location with views of the old bridge. Family run restaurant, really friend and efficient staff. We came in a bit blind, not realising that there was a set menu at 50€ a head that people usually order from. We ordered from a la carte as there were dishes that we wanted to try that didn't come in the menu, though they had no issue with us ordering a half menu for our little daughter, even though it wasn't advertised. The rabbit was delicious, I'd recommend it!

Historic Sites
When visiting Besalú, don't miss the Sinagoga y baños judíos de Besalú, a site of great historical and cultural significance. The area includes remnants of the 13th-century synagogue, declared a Cultural Asset of National Interest. It housed a patio for festivals and weddings, as well as a prayer room. The nearby Mikveh, or Jewish ritual bath, is remarkably well-preserved and offers an evocative glimpse into ancient traditions.
The Besalú Synagogue, nestled in the historic town of Besalú, Spain, is a fascinating remnant of the Jewish community that once thrived in the region during the Middle Ages. This small yet historically significant site dates back to the 13th century and provides a unique glimpse into the life and culture of Sephardic Jews in medieval Catalonia. Though the structure is modest, its significance is immense, as it represents one of the few remaining synagogues from that era in Spain. The synagogue is part of a larger complex that includes a mikveh, or ritual bath, which is remarkably well-preserved and highlights the community's dedication to religious practices. Visiting the Besalú Synagogue is not just an exploration of a building, but a journey into a vibrant past, offering insights into the religious and social dynamics of a Jewish community that was integral to the town's history. It's a poignant reminder of Spain's diverse cultural heritage and the enduring legacy of its Jewish population.
Edson J — Google review
The site of the Jewish Synagogue of Besalú is emotional and moving for anyone who can imagine the daily life of the Jews of Besalú, the interactions, social integration and religious separation out of piety -- a piety that Chrstians would have done well to emulate -- with everyone in the community. It is emotional if we are strong enough to imagine the moment things got worse, when the Jews of Besalú were forced to leave everything and move to Girona, a city which they hoped would provide some safety, even if only for a short while. The Synagogue remains, the classroom for the young boys, the upper level for the women, the room for Torah study, and the assembly area, are all exposed and free to visit, with plenty of places to sit and read your siddur and remember. The Mikvah is locked and requires purchasing a guided tour ticket, which costs less than 2 euros. Well worth doing. Our guide proved to be very educated and sensitive to the history, and made the private tour part of the wonderful experience. Visit Besalú, you will love it.
Alberto O — Google review
Absolutely amazing to see the Mikveh (=Jewish Ritual Bath) is such good condition. It was built circa 1264 and remained in use for about 150 years.
Benzion M — Google review
Incredible historical site. I highly suggest reaching out to the tourism office in Besalu if you want a tour of the Mikveh, as they only open it at odd hours.
Gitty R — Google review
Very small village. Bridge is probably the only really impressive thing u are going to find there
Lena T — Google review
This is a pretty small town with middle ages streets, bridge, tower, houses and church. The most fascinating spot however is the Jewish purification ceremonial bath (mikvah). In contrast to the synagogue on top of it, the bath, which was built below is very well preserved. This place gives a dramatic feel of that time (see photo attached). Highly recommended. The dour to the mikvah is locked, so to get in, one must set up a tour with a guide (in advance) at the tourist information office, which is situated at the other side of the bridge.

total disappointment! Terribly hot in all floors, even in a cloudy day and not so hot outside. Musty smell in all rooms. While we were there we were sprayed with a smelly product! This terrible smells plus the heat left us with terrible headache! All you will see is a few rooms with stamps, illustrations and clothes. NOT REALLY SUITABLE FOR KIDS. “Experience what is like to be a circus artist” - a promise NOT delivered in any way… Not even the Faquir is like the photo in the promotional leaflet… This place could me amazing, IF HAVING any type of videos, interactions and other educational material. ANSWERING TO CIRCUSLAND REPLY: As you can see from my previous reviews, my kids are used to visit museums. Usually great experiences. I did said at reception how many adults and kids we were. And we did pay all the entries, be careful with slander… Since you mentioned: it’s an abuse to consider children only up to the age of 9 y.o. Children are widely considered up yo 12 y.o. Again, an evidence that you are not child friendly. We followed other persons to the patio, which had door opened. I guess you will offend the other customers too. If you had air conditioning, consider install new ones, because it was insanely hot! (Maybe that’s why the patio door was open …) Please take feedback to improve, not to offend your customers. If your museum is more suitable for adults loving circus, which I can understand, please advertise accordingly. You will see previous reviews, from other customers, aligned with what I have just written here. Continuous improvement is an art…

Incredible little restaurant in the historic city center/plaza. Staff were friendly and both spoke English and had English menus. We order tapas because the Paella is 2 person minimum. Everything is great, the Iberian pork was my favorite meat dish, but the star of the show was the amazingly fresh salad and bread.

Wonderful food - especially the Olot Potatoes and Pork & Potatoes! Nice to see a tapas menu without tortilla! 😁 Friendly service. Nice location near a large church. It seems that many of the tourists don't walk this far into the town and settle at the bars at the smaller square nearer the main picturesque medieval village entrance. Definitely recommended!

3 points from us: 1. I would give one star for the silent treatment we endured. We were first ignored when we walked in, the owner or older woman had to prod the staff multiple times to acknowledge us. We were honestly spoken to like garbage; I spoke in Spanish, the only English word I said was the name of the item on the menu that was outside on the wall, and this girl acted like I cursed her. I would've translated the menu item, but didn't have any phone data. They didn't offer us to wait for a table outside, they said ok, all we have is this table... here. We accepted, they sat us, gave us water, but then we were ignored for 10-20mins (as was everyone else who came in to pay and everyone was sort of annoyed and confused at the situation). The comical thing about being ignored, though, is that they had to try HARD not to look at us, we were seated at a 2 person table directly in front of the bar/kitchen. Even worse, I'm not exaggerating when I say that every staffer who had to run food or drinks had to pass us, so there was more than ample opportunity to check on us as we sat there starving. I'm on a special diet for medical reasons, so they were one of the only places in town that had food I could eat. But I couldn't keep waiting. We finally decided to leave after a pretty ridiculous amount of time being ignored had passed, so left a bit of cash for the drinks and just left. 2. I believe the main issues here are that they're understaffed and also need AC inside. It was boiling in there. I dont know about building codes or the staffing situation, so feel for them there. 3. The extra stars are for the very sweet guy who ran after us, my husband had left his bag that we later came to learn had our passports in it. That guy is a star. Thank you! All in all, a very contrasting situation, it's hard to give a 1 star after he saved us there, but I don't think I've ever been to another restaurant where they just really didn't want our money.

Pizza restaurant
Pizzeria La Roda Groga is a highly recommended restaurant in Besalu, known for its delicious pizzas and affordable prices. Located in a historic building, it offers a cozy ambiance and excellent service. Visitors praise the truffle pizza and tomatoes, as well as the spicy salami and mozzarella pizzas. The restaurant also serves local craft beer and has a good selection of pizzas that are both fast and tasty.
Wow! Just wow! Everything is perfecto. From the service to the food to the view… My husband and I stopped on a whim driving from Barcelona to Andorra. We sat outside. The food was amazing and our waiter and the owner were so kind and helpful. Recommend the truffle pizza and tomatoes! One of the best pizzas we have ever had and we love pizza. Can’t recommend enough! Support this restaurant. You’ll be grateful you did.

We have eaten at La Rosa Groga twice in the last week because it was so good. It’s such a quaint, authentic space in the old town of Besalu. The atmosphere is very intimate and friendly. Even in the heat of summer, it’s cool and the food is outstanding. The service is very friendly and the waitress speaks much better English than we speak Spanish! Highly recommended.

Some of the best pizza I ever had. The owners were also very kind.

Amazing pizza! I had the spicy salami option and the whole pizza was covered with it. High quality salami too! Some nice local beers as well!

Friendly and attentive service. Pizza extremly jummy (cheese and special of the day with botifarra), White wine of the house also good quality. Everything very fair and reasonable priced. Can highly recommend, would choose again when in town.

Some of the BEST pizza I've ever had. Which is saying a lot because I'm from Chicago. The owner is extremely nice and helpful. He stopped by or table before and after the meal. He also makes the pizza. I highly recommend visiting this incredibly establishment!

This was one of few places open Sunday evening in the winter off season. We were very pleased with the food and beer! Staff was friendly and helpful. English not primarily spoken but waitress was very accommodating. Pizza was delicious!

A small wonderful pizzeria with a homemade sent. Good prices and good service and very good pizzas with great variety. Located in a small and cozy space, feels almost like a secret... We realy enjoyed it.

Restaurant
Restaurant Amadeus is a delightful establishment with a highly competitive selection of dishes and an overall pleasant atmosphere. The variety on the menu is impressive, offering a range of options at an affordable price point of approximately 14 units. While the wine may not meet everyone's expectations, the exceptional service provided by the staff compensates for this minor setback. With its reasonable prices and efficient service, visiting Restaurant Amadeus becomes a necessity, especially for those returning to Besalu.
Good good and service. Great value for money. Recommended

This place was really nice, they have a very competitive many and the food is fair enough. The menu is around 14€. The wine is not good at all which is why I give then 4 stars but for the price and excellent service it’s a must visit. When I come back to besalu I’ll definitely eat there again.

1. Spaghetti Bolognese – the pasta was overcooked, and the sauce and meat were very average. 2. Cannoli with spinach and pine nuts – only three small rolls, a very minimal portion, more like an appetizer; also quite bland, with no noticeable pine nut flavor. 3. Grilled calamari – they barely touched the grill, undercooked, rubbery, and flavorless. Served with cold potatoes and carrots. Not good combination. Need more flavour. Overall, it was edible, but you’d be better off eating somewhere else.

Food was ok. They were the only restaurant open at 4:30pm in Besalu. The service was ok, food was ok, tinto de verano was fine. Thank you for being open. We ordered papas olot that are deep fried potatoes with meat in the middle, typical dish of the zone. It was ok remembered me of a Colombian empanada. And we also had jamón serrano and bread. It was ok.

Don’t go here. Extremely average food at a very high price for Spain. “Menú del día” for 15 euros did not include bread, dessert or drink - which is crazy. Paid 20 euros for just my so called Menú del día and a half filled beer. My worst dining experience in Spain in over 3 months of living here.

We had a lovely meal at Amadeus, friendly staff, nice setting, very relaxed, well priced, right on the main square to watch the activities. Catalonian Creme a must. Excellent disabled toilet.

Actually I don't want to give even 1 star!! It's so terrible restaurant. Waiter was quite kind before we ordered another light menu( not menu del dia). Beer is quite fine but another tapas is the worst I've eaten in Spain. Calimari(squid) looks so bad. When I bite a bit, I couldn't recognize which is fried and squid. It looks like that it was outside or keeps inside of refrigerator so long time. Even in case of patatas bravas, we saw a green part of potatoes. ( it means it includes poison). Above all, I had trouble in my stomach next day!!!!!! If you can handle with sucking service and you have a strong stomach with A BAD Food made of spoiled ingredients, it's not bad choice to go this restaurant. But, I recommend you will chose another good restaurant. It's a horrible experience for me...STILL!!!!!!!

The guy who tried to serve us almost kicked us out. We asked him something in English and because he wasn't speaking or understood we had to left. However his attitude was against us and he wasn't in a mood to work. I wouldn't recommend it because they doesn't seem to worry if the lose clients. They really don't care about.
