Perched on a mountain top in the Serra de Verdera within the Cap de Creus Natural Park, the Monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes is a remarkable medieval Romanesque complex. This historical gem has undergone significant restoration work and is considered one of Catalonia's most important monasteries. The monastery offers stunning views of the Pyrenean peaks and the Mediterranean Sea.
The Monastery truly conveys its history and helps one imagine how life must of been in the medieval ages. A few tips to know before visiting for the first time like we did. There are three parking areas as you get close to the monastery, the last one is where the road ends. There is also a castle and a church to visit while there all short hikes from the monastery. Bring a jacket as it’s cooler and windy depending on the weather. We went on a cloudy rain and it was very dramatic with the fog and clouds but also chilly. Will try again when it’s warmer. The gift shop has unique local made gifts. The restaurant cafe has incredible views of the valley below and prices are reasonable. The staff are very friendly.

Fascinating to learn about the monks and villagers who lived here long ago. The monastery has one of the most impressive Romanesque churches ever built, I can only imagine what it would be like to have a beautiful Mass there. There is an old wine cellar where the monks made wine in later centuries in order to sustain their life in the monastery.

Monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes is a delight — both for the eyes and for history lovers. Perched on the Verdera mountain overlooking the Bay of Llançà and El Port de la Selva, the monastery offers sweeping Mediterranean views that are nothing short of spectacular. Overall, I’d say it’s more than worth the trip. The mix of dramatic landscapes, architectural beauty, and historic atmosphere makes Sant Pere de Rodes a highlight of Catalonia.
Jessica J — Google review
An hour’s drive from Girona reveals fantastic views, plenty of hiking trails, and a monastery. The Sant Pere de Rodes Monastery is a wonderful place. The Mediterranean landscapes visible from here are simply breathtaking. One of the most remarkable sights in Catalonia. My family 's favourite place. Definitely recommend it.
Indra K — Google review
Beautiful building that was visible from our vacation home. After seeing this monastery for a week standing across the water we decided to visit it on one of our last days. We drove up the mountain and walked from the parking area which was about a 5-10 minute walk. At the entree we paid €6 p.p. to enter the building. Once inside we walked around and made some pictures of the building and our group members. The visit was definitely worth it, as it shows quite a beautiful piece of history.

€6pp to enter (€4 concession). Great monastery, free audio tour accessible on your phone (wifi provided), wonderful history and experience with lots of different parts accessible to visitors.

Historical landmark
Poblat medieval de Santa Creu de Rodes is a historic site in El Port de la Selva, Costa Brava. The town developed around fairs and markets that attracted pilgrims on their way to the Monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes. Visitors can enjoy spectacular views of the bay from the church and witness the ruins of the castle of Sant Salvador de Verdera at the mountain top.
Great View!

(Translated by Google) Gorgeous. The urban structure of Santa Creu de Rodes corresponds to a walled town, that is to say, a town where the rear facades of the houses act as murals and which can only be accessed through fortified gates. The nerve center is the church square around which the houses are located, separated by the streets which open into it. Santa Creu de Rodes was born and grew up in the shadow of the monastery of Sant Pere and was a prosperous place hosting fairs and markets, with innkeepers, tailors, bakers, blacksmiths, tavern keepers or notaries who offered their services to anyone who arrived, in particular, to the numerous pilgrims who went to the monastery .

Castell de Verdera (Sant Salvador de Verdera) offers a stunning blend of landscapes, with the blue Mediterranean sea, lush vineyards, and towering mountains like Sant Salvador de Verdera and Puig de Queralbs. The Cap de Creus area boasts dramatic coastal features shaped by the sea and wind, including picturesque coves and steep promontories.
The best view of the Costa Brava and the sea opens from the hilltop fortress!

Excelent views easy to hike for 6+ year olds. Last stretch to the top might be a bit too rocky and steep. Trail is very narrow so beware in these covid-19 times. There are spaces to rest along the route but for picnic area I would recommend the garden (huerto) next to the monastery.

Sant Salvador Castle stands on the very summit of Verdera Mountain at an altitude of around 670 m. From the top of the mountain, you can see the Shrine of Sant Onofre at the foot of the cliff on which the castle perches. Beyond to the west, is L'Empordà, which stretches out northwards as far as the Pyrenees, where you can make out the profile of Canigó. The Gulf of Roses and the Medes Islands are also clearly visible, as is El Montgrí massif, Les Guilleries and El Montseny. You may also see skydiving happening on the airfield several km to the West. To the east, you can see the Monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes and the coast of Cap de Creus, which links to the north with the Gulf of Lion. This commanding position and outstanding view made the castle strategically very important. In addition, the steep and almost inaccessible terrain provided a system of defence that made the castle impregnable. The castle is mentioned in numerous documents due to the constant disputes between the Monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes and the counts of Empúries, who vied with each other to control it. The first reference dates from 904, suggesting that the castle was already in existence in the 9th century. Nevertheless, many of the surviving structures date from the 13th century, the time when Count Ponç IV of Empúries ordered that a new fort be built given the poor state of repair of the existing castle. With the passing of the years, the strategic importance of castles perched on rocks -the invincibility of which was due to the difficult terrain on which they were sited- declined as a result of developments in weaponry and warfare techniques. Even so, Sant Salvador Castle was still in use in the 16th century as a look-out post to combat piracy. It is easiest to approach from the north via a short track from the car park, however an alternative (challenging) hiking route is available from the south, starting in El Más Fumats and passing over the summits between them.

Didn’t expect such a good meal here. Two course menu plus water and dessert for 20€. Pate and crepes were good firsts and beef and mushroom dish was solid. Meatballs are probably a pass. Overall I would have wanted a bit more from each dish but for the price and view it’s hard to complain.

Restaurant El Far de Sarnella is a charming place with attentive staff and delicious meats. The prices are reasonable, and there's a pine forest where you can park in the shade. It offers a lovely sea view and a swimming pool for customers. The portions are generous, making it an ideal stop for travelers. Additionally, its proximity to the lighthouse and beaches provides opportunities for beautiful photos and a refreshing swim in the sea.
Relax atmosphere, and extremely happy with the mixed grill dish . As well the dorada fish was excellent! Recommend! 5 ⭐️

Of you're not a meat lover this place isn't for you. The (sometimes overly) friendly waiter recommended us this piece of 1kg meat which supposedly had been marinating for 3 days in wine and limes and he assured us it was for one person. This obviously wasn't the case. The meat was most definitely enough for 2 people and while it wasn't a bad piece of meat there was no trace of any added flavor because of the limes or the wine. Overall they're very friendly here, but the meat is mediocre in my opninoin.

I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. Wasn’t expecting much by the look of the place but the service and food were excellent. There was so much food we asked for doggy bags. If you’re looking for a great value place along the coast you can’t go wrong here.

(Translated by Google) We went to the restaurant because of its proximity to the beach. The reviews weren't all bad and we wanted to give it a shot, but you really don't need to try it. Expensive price, small portions and very bad service. We had a table reserved for two, we arrived on time and they gave us the table, but we had to ask several times for the cards, they served us reluctantly and we were told they would arrive soon. We ordered and waited more than an hour for the food to be brought to us, with children this is a horror, we also saw how they served 3 tables who had ordered after us before us. When the time came, it turned out that 3 dishes were missing that had not been ordered correctly. To pay we were charged for an ice cream that we hadn't ordered and the lady still doubted us. Conclusion: We will not repeat. The restaurant offers a delightful array of seafood and meat dishes, with the paella being particularly noteworthy for its perfection. Diners rave about the flavorful options like suquet and caldereta, complemented by attentive service from friendly staff.
Excellent in all aspects. We ordered a paella for two and it was just perfect. The other plates (suquet and caldereta) were delicious too. The place by itself is worth the visit. The staff were very attentive too. Good value for the quality of the food. If you like fish, you will find wonderful options. If you don't, there are excellent meat options too.

Authentic local cuisine with friendly and fast service. We came in on a weekday afternoon, we're seated upstairs with few other couples. We had 2 seafood dishes with a salad and dessert with coffee. Dorado in stove and grilled langoustunes were very good. I only recommend to come with a way to translate Spanish or Catalan, as there is no English menu.

We had lunch inside at the top floor and we had super nice views from outside. Lunch was delicious and paella for 4 incredible. Also, desert had very nice presentation and it was delicious.

We loved the food. Service is slow but you have to be proactive and speak Spanish if you can. Parrillada, wine, daurada, sardines alls were tasty and perfectly executed. I don’t understand the bad reviews. Maybe people don’t know what a paella is and think it’s a huge platter of rice?

Ordered fish of the day on 17 July 2017 - we were served perfectly prepared filets of sea bass; great wine recommendation as well (local white). Do not miss the local version of the creme brulee - accompanied with a local dessert wine. Service was great.

Wow.. hard to be worst. What a shame. Smelly fish, not fresh at all. Service was poor, even lighted a cigarette on service. JUST WOW

This is really good restaurant. Food was really tasty and staff was so nice. The food was so good that we didn’t care about bill at all. Recommend to everyone who would like to enjoy the food and not just eating. Thank you again and we hope to have the possibility to visit you again, one day. Merle

Great simple food. Had the jamon iberico and the cod, nothing too fancy but one of the best meal I've had in Spain and certainly el porta de la selva. Quality ingredients.
