Castle
Sights & Landmarks
The Castillo de Alcalá del Júcar, a medieval fortress located in the heart of Alcala del Jucar, offers breathtaking 360-degree views of the town from its top. The fortress is nestled within a rocky ridge and features an artificial moat. Visitors can explore the pentagonal tower, which symbolizes stately power and serves as a defense axis for the enclosure. Additionally, there are three floors and a rooftop to explore.
The location is incredible, you can see the whole town, the bridge, the gorge both ways from here. We arrived at 14 and they wouldn't let us in. At the entrance there is a store with food and souvenirs, toilet.

Very beautiful and peaceful place, it was a great trip. We spent the day in Alcalá and learned a little about its history.

The whole town is amazing, the houses are literally built into the gorge walls! Theres a medieval castle and caves that are actually the residence of an old Spanish bull fighter "El Diablo".. really interesting place to visit and explore. The entrance fee of €3 includes a drink in the underground bar. A must see. The local area is great for kids exploring smd adventurous activities like whitewater rafting, paintball, high rope trapeze... brilliant place!
Debbiebag — Google review
Well worth a visit. €2.50 each, prices in the gift shop are very reasonable. Not much to look at in rhe Castle, 3 floors and the roof top which offered great views. The best part for me was the cave below the castle, well set out and lots to see. It is quite a walk through the town but the streets are very quaint. There is parking at the Castle for a few cars.
Camille D — Google review
The fort is located on the top and has amazing views. There is an entry ticket but it’s worth it. You can get a 360 degree view of the town. The medieval fortress closes a small space in the rocky ridge, through a series of buildings and an artificial moat. In the fortress as a whole, the keep stands out, as the axis of defense of the enclosure and a symbol of stately power. It is a pentagonal tower, with two turrets at its rear ends, the result of the reforms carried out by D. Juan Pacheco, II Marquis of Villena, in the 15th century. The place has rich history. A must visit if you are in Alcalá Del Jucar.

Really amazing especially during the evening with the reflective lights. The walk up to the castle was also excellent. The little gift shops sell some wonderful memorabilia. A fantastic day out - worth every minute

Amazing castle, town and caves. We rent a car from the station Joaquin Sorrolla and went there in 1.3 hours. Not sure why is not more popular is simply amazing.

Church of San Andrés

Catholic church
The Church of San Andrés is a significant building in the village, featuring an elongated single-nave construction with a ribbed tierceron vault from the 16th century. It was built in late Gothic style in the 15th century and underwent remodeling, incorporating neoclassical elements by the 18th century. The church has a Latin cross plan, a large dome at its center, and a neoclassical-style main doorway.
(Translated by Google) This church is one of the most representative monuments in the town of Alcalá del Jucar, both for its size and its history. Entrance to the interior is not always possible due to its opening hours, but it is a true pleasure to see it from a distance with its distinctive dome.

(Translated by Google) Catholic parish temple of the town, which covers different styles such as late Gothic and neoclassical. The church dates back to the 15th century when the town was conquered by the Christians. It is built with thick ashlars and has two doors with semicircular arches, giving the main door to the Cuesta de la Hondonera. The Town Hall building is located in front of the aforementioned church. We were not able to visit its interior, since we found it on a night walk and it was closed.

(Translated by Google) A striking temple, and I wish I could say more about it. Its architecture certainly draws attention, both for its location and its finishes (such as the rear dome). However, I find it a shame how little information is given about it (having previously visited the Tourist Office) and the possibilities of visiting the temple inside. From what I've read, visits are sometimes allowed. I understand (as someone trained in heritage conservation) what it means to open it to the public, but I think the current format isn't quite right either, as there's a metal gate at the door through which you can see the unlit interior. I emphasize this because, on the right, on the door, you can see a box where you can insert €0.50 if you want the lights to turn on for a moment. Is that a lot of money? Not at all. But since you can't go in, it seems unnecessary to have to charge that much (especially in a town where everything you can visit requires a fee). That said, I'd definitely love to return in the future and have the opportunity to visit the church, stopping to admire its architecture, interior decorations, paintings, images, etc.

(Translated by Google) It is one of the main and most characteristic places in Alcalá. The door is usually closed and you can only see it from the inside through a grate. Even so, the chimes are very soft, and you can tell that it is in perfect condition, making it an essential part of the fantastic landscape of Alcalá.

(Translated by Google) As soon as we cross the Roman Bridge we begin to climb the Hondonera slope that leaves us at the doors of the Church of San Andrés and the Town Hall. We begin to see the first houses excavated in the rock that transport us to bygone eras. The Church was built in the 15th century and expanded in the 18th century. From various locations such as the castle and viewpoints we can see its silhouette where a beautiful green dome stands out. From an architectural point of view, the church is a robust construction where thick ashlars have been used to create strong walls. The temple has a Latin cross, that is, a central nave and a transept. The naves that make up the church are covered with barrel vaults, reinforced with semicircular arches. I have to say that the interior of the church is painted white and the floors are polished marble or granite, but I would have loved to see its original walls. It has two doors with semicircular arches and the main door faces the Hondonera slope. In front, a small esplanade with some benches welcomes the visitor. The side door faces Pósito Street where the Town Hall is located.

Alcalá del Júcar, located in the Albacete province of eastern Spain, is a charming village perched on a steep hillside overlooking the breathtaking Júcar River and its impressive gorge. The medieval Alcalá del Júcar Castle, an ancient Arab fortress, offers stunning panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. The 15th-century Church of San Andrés and the fascinating Cuevas del Diablo, a series of caves carved into the cliff face, are also nearby.

Cuevas del Diablo, located in Alcala del Jucar, is a fascinating destination known for its unique hillside pockmarked with caves and tunnels. Over the centuries, these rocky dwellings have been carved out of the material, some of which are remarkably well-preserved to this day. One of the most popular attractions is the Cueva del Diablo (Devil's Cave), easily accessible from the village with clear signage.
Omg!!! This place is one of the most beautiful I've ever seen. It might be because I love caves and cave houses...From the village are plenty of signs to the Devil's cave. You can't miss it! At the reception is the owner, such a caracter, such a lovely man ( I think he is well known in Spain ) with his beautiful dog. We were allowed to visit with our two doggies. 💜 Impressed by the low price that includes the visit and a drink at the 5 floor balcony. There is a lot of history, old objects, pictures with the owner's past....so relaxing. I felt full of good energy and vibe after the visit. And the feeling of enjoying a good glass of red wine at the balcony...Absolutely gorgeous!!! Thanks for sharing with us this place!

A amazing place worth visiting. Got a chance to meet the legendary El Diablo in person. The place is preserved well. There is also lot of photos and antique stuff inside the cave. You also get a free beverage inside. A must visit if you are in Alcalá del Júcar.

Quirky place to go and check out. One drink is included in the entrance price, we all enjoyed a red vermout. We also met El Diablo himself, so you always have that as a possibility.

What a great place to explore! Not my first visit but was for my girlfriend. Great collection of typical Spanish antiques, covering everything from cabinets full of matches, medical equipment, typewriters, farm tools and machinery (to name a few artifacts), my favorite being a mini tractor type ploughing machine with what looks like grannies armchair sat on top for the operator 😂😂. Great value at €3 per person which includes a drink at the far side of the caves, really nice little bar overlooking the river at the mountains that surround Alcalá de Júcar. You can explore further the caves by walking up a 7 stories stairway, so take a deep breath before you do! The cave walkways are fascinating and you discover little nooks along the way. Another benefit is how cool temperature wise in there, especially when it was 40+ outside, so a welcome relief. The owner who is a spitting image of Salvador Dali complete with pointy mustache, there are plenty of photos of him with famous people along the caves, and we managed to grab one with him when we left. Great experience highly recommend!

A must visit when in Alcala del Jucar. Amazing cave museum with a bar. Friendly owner and his dog opens the door that links one side to the other. Only €3.50 including a drink at the bar.

A must see. Much bigger than you’d expect. Key highlights are how extensive the tunnels are that go straight through the mountain and drink is included which you can have at the terrace with nice views. Good price/ quality ratio

In April 2022, I had the opportunity to explore Alcala del Jucar on my way from Albacete to Alarcon. Despite the unfortunate rain that day, I discovered a picturesque place known for its charm. One of the highlights was the Puente Romano, a stunning and romantic bridge with an awe-inspiring view. The distant perspective revealed its true beauty, surpassing the experience of walking around in the mountain village itself.
Well preserved Roman bridge still used by cars and pedestrians.

(Translated by Google) One of those places that transports you back in time in an instant. It has a single sturdy archway connecting the two sides of the town over the river, and every stone seems to hold centuries-old stories. I spent about 20 minutes crossing it slowly, admiring the views of the water and the castle perched on the rock. Crossing this bridge is like taking a break in time. If you enjoy walking among historical vestiges and enjoying a peaceful setting, you'll love it. In just a few minutes, you can walk leisurely across it, take some photos, and soak up the town's atmosphere. Access is easy, with no hills or complications, perfect for a relaxing stroll. It has that rural charm that needs no embellishment: just walk, look, and enjoy. (Translated by Google) The only good thing is that the temperature can be regulated and the hot water works perfectly. The service is also quite good, but the room leaves a lot to be desired... Nothing to do with the advertisement. Single beds and the mattress was dancing on the box spring, making it impossible to put beds together. The building does not have anyone guarding the entrance at any time. You have to go to another place to manage the check-in and collect keys. Dining room disabled, you have to go to another restaurant for the included breakfast which, on the other hand, was terrible, you can't choose, they give you a toast with tomato, a slice of York ham, a muffin and an anise doughnut, with coffee or juice. Personally, I wouldn't repeat. Bar La Hondonera offers incredible views and friendly service. It is a great place to enjoy tapas with generous portions at a good price. The location is perfect for having coffee before heading up or enjoying a well-deserved snack after coming down. The interior, designed like a cave, adds to the charm of the place. Visitors can choose from a wide variety of delicious homemade tapas, including Iberian ham, cheese plates, mussels in their juice, and Orza loin.
Great place to sit down and relax. Prices and services were great. Location is perfect I. The way down from the Castillo. I highly recommend the meat in tomato.

Tapas was ok, not special. But a nice place and the beer was good

Lovely little bar. Lots of tapas advertised but didn't have any available. The barman got our drinks wrong then when the correct drinks came my Nestea was frozen in the can. Very pretty outdoor seating area.

Worst in Spain so far. Besides the fact that they do not have a menu with prices all is in Spanish and they don't speak English but we got along. The potato's are cold and the ribs were ones of the worst I had in my life. Our dog loved them. 2 stars as the drinks were ok. Off topic a bit, the owners (I think cause they were going in the place private areas) smoked and littered by throwing the cigarettes on the ground and I've draw attention to that and personally picked it up and put it in the ash trey (which was on their table). No English here either, told me (I think) that they sweep it. All other rubbish around flew 2 min later as a gasp of wind came, so not the most civilised place.

Nestled just a stone's throw from Hostal Alcala Del Jucar, Restaurante Buenavista is a delightful spot that captures the essence of Spanish cuisine. With its stunning outdoor terrace overlooking the river, it’s an ideal place to unwind while soaking in picturesque views of the town and bridge. The restaurant offers a homemade menu featuring grilled meats and fresh seafood, making it perfect for those looking to savor local flavors.
(Translated by Google) Today we ate from the menu, knuckle and baked hake, the knuckle was spectacular! Very good hake. I have to say that the waiters are very friendly, the place is very clean, as well as beautiful, they treated us very well, we will definitely return!

(Translated by Google) Slow to serve and there were only 4 tables. The food is small and bad. The burger we ordered arrived cold, the portion of calamari was small for the price, the croquettes were served with a kind of jam on the bottom that took away all the flavor, the torrija was terrible. I was even embarrassed to take a photo of the burger. The truth is that the result is sad, there are many better places to eat than that one. I do not recommend it at all and we will never return to that restaurant. And to make matters worse, the services outside mean that if it is raining you will get soaked.

(Translated by Google) We went for lunch on a weekday in the month of May and it was very quiet. The place to eat very well in the shade with beautiful views of the river. The waiter treated us very well and served us quickly. The first meal was salad and manchego gazpacho, the first dish was very good and the portion is large. The second dish, somewhat normal, doesn't come with so much food and is very simple. The dessert was simple and nothing homemade. All for €15 per person and drinks included. The place is not bad if you don't have anywhere else to go because many were closed that day. It's not that I recommend the place because the food is very simple but if there is nothing else you eat more or less well.

(Translated by Google) In a restaurant with a homemade menu, grilled meat, for tourists, many tables, fair staff. The price the same as in the area. The food is not bad, it is not a romantic place or one to eat in a hurry. If it's to spend the day, it's fine and you eat well. I recommend making a reservation because we went at 2:00 p.m. and it was a miracle because without a reservation no one came in until 3:00 or something.

Nice bar beside the playa, river and historic bridge. Good selection on the menu, we had a patatas bravas and broken eggs (fried eggs with ham and Potatoes). The broken eggs had a lot of water in the bottom but tasted OK, the patatas bravas was nice but not spicy. Good service, OK price and a great setting.

The view can not make up for selling frozen supermarket pizzas. As you can see from my photo the pizza was a slightly higher quality than I expect from prison cafeteria. The service was slow and I did not see one smile during my entire time in the restaurant. Servers were being yelled at by manager behind the bar in clear view of the customers.

Very Racist Restaurant! I came with a group of non-white friends and were told the place was full. The group behind us said they had no reservation but was given a table anyway. Also interesting that they have several empty tables.

(Translated by Google) I think it's a great bar by the river as it flows through Alcalá del Jucar, where you can have a beer or a soft drink. There are magnificent views of the entire old town as well as the surrounding countryside. On hot days, the shade provided by the trees is appreciated. There are tables only on the terrace; there are no tables inside.
