The Heights of Abraham is a hilltop park in the UK, accessible by an Alpine cable car system that offers visitors an exciting aerial ride over the Derwent Valley. Once a lead-mining site, it has been transformed into a visitor center with wooded areas for leisurely strolls and stunning views.
This was an absolute brilliant day out. Started off riding the cable cars up to the top, beautiful scenery to look out. It all felt quite safe! The actual place at the top had plenty of things to see and do! From Wombles to the Caves it was great fun! We had a brilliant explorer for the caves- The Other Steve - he was so full of knowledge and enjoyed sharing it. Kept me interested all the way through and the light show at the end was a great surprise! Great day out and we all enjoyed it!

Had a fantastic day here. The staff were fantastic. The in character staff were amazing and so friendly and knowledgeable. Special shout goes to Mel who showed us round one of the caves. She was fantastic and a real credit to you. So funny and knowledgable. There’s lots to do up there. The cable car ride is great. 2 caves to tour and plenty of fun for the kids on the play grounds. The cafe was brilliant. Had a lovely panini in there and some lovely cake. We came on a weekday outside of the school holidays and didn’t have to wait for anything. Lots of walking to be done and some is rather steep.

We had an absolutely wonderful experience here today. It was our first time visiting and had no idea what to expect, but what a day we had. I’ve come to write a review because I want to give recognition to Lorin, the lovely guy that did our Cavern tour. He was so helpful, approachable, and even took the time out to stay back and show us some fossils in the final cavern, because my autistic son’s special interest is dinosaurs. He was brilliant with both of my children and made the tour really quite special. Give this man a raise immediately HoA! 🥲🤣

Great couple of hours at least spent with great views . The Cave experience is informative and interesting. The cafe is very good with great selection at reasonable prices. parking is in the station carpark payable . Blue badge holders can pay for time and get an hour ontop free. It is a short walk to the cable car ticket office. Just be aware that the last 150yard to Ticket office is steep.

EXCELLENT! This is an interesting way to spend the day on your holiday! Excellent, very well manned cable carts to take you to the hill/mountain? At the top, you’re instantly met with more helpful staff full of information on where to go and what you can do. There’s two caves, both equally interesting totally made by the excellent curation and delivery or stories by the guides (Jordan and Bessie were first class). There’s two excellent play areas suitable for most ages (above toddler I think). Fabulous cafe, where we had excellent service by Sue plus the views were spectacular! I was super impressed they had a variety of gluten free vegan cakes (that were not the usual boring brownies!). They also had two bars ( one is the oldest licensed bar in Matlock). There’s also a Wombles building, a couple of lovely gift shops, lots of information, a pizza van and more. The views are incredible. Overall, this is great value for money and something the children will not forget.
Hayley B — Google review
Excellent place for the kids day out. Lots things to do and see. Nice cafe and play ground. Stunning views during the cable car and from the top. Most amazing mining tunnels and the guide was excellent
Manisankar K — Google review
Heights of Abraham is a fantastic family destination—perfect for both toddlers and older kids, with plenty of land to explore, play areas, and exhibits to keep everyone entertained. We especially enjoyed the Wombles exhibition—it was fun and whimsical, and offered something a bit different. The views from the hilltop are absolutely lovely, trampling over the Derwent Valley and surrounding countryside, making the cable car ride all the more magical. The food was okay, but nothing to write home about—not quite matching the beauty of the surroundings. I was also disappointed that they didn’t have a chai latte on the drinks menu, and vegan soft serve ice cream wasn’t available—both would have been great choices to round off a lovely day. Admission is on the steep side: adult tickets cost about £25 online or £28.50 at the gate . It felt quite expensive, especially for a shorter visit, but with a longer stay it might be more justifiable. Overall, it’s a beautiful and memorable place with a lot to offer families. With improvements to the food and drink options, it would be near-perfect!
Chloe B — Google review
Wonderful day out, perfect for dogs also, they are allowed everywhere but caverns and the Vista restaurant. Food a little pricey but picnic tables are everywhere for a packed lunch. The cable car stops half way up for stunning view pictures.

History Museums
The Peak District Mining Museum is located in a picturesque limestone gorge and offers interactive exhibits, including climbing shafts. Visitors can also explore the Temple Mine and the Matlock Bath Aquarium. Additionally, the area features Gulliver's Kingdom theme park and hosts annual Illuminations and Venetian nights in September and October. The region's history as a tourist resort for the wealthy dates back to 1698 when warm springs were discovered, attracting visitors seeking relaxation.
I decided to visit the highly recommended Peak District Mining Museum while I was in Matlock, and it was well worth the trip. The museum features a variety of mining artefacts, as well as an impressive collection of crystals and minerals. There's a lot of history to explore, and you can also take a mine tour. Admission prices are very reasonable: £8.50 for adults for either the museum or the mine, or you can purchase a combined ticket for £16.
Karolina B — Google review
A good museum, though some of the exhibits (and the staff) could do with a refresh. Don't tet me wrong, both were really interesting - just a bit jaded and almost going through the motions. That said, I'd still recommend that people make an effort to visit both the museum and the underground mine tour. The mine tour seems to run at 11am 1pm and 2.10pm by volunteers. It's a short but steep walk away from the museum and if that puts you off, its nothing to the stopping and ducking of the mine. Good to be able to see how the miners dug the minerals out of the ground what they look like and used for. The end of the tour panning for mini gemstones was a bit 'lame' for many adults (i guess good fun for kids). The museum has a lot to take on board, but if you've the time its git a load of history & info. Overall -yes well worth visiting and by far the best thing going in Matlock Bath, Matlock and area! Dogs on leads welcome in mine and museum. Aug 25 £16 gorgeous museum and underground tour.

Just visited this week with my family and in laws. We had a great time. The museum is small but lots to see and very informative and the staff are helpful. We also did the mine tour with our kids (nearly 2 and 6). Robin, our guide, was absolutely wonderful. He was full of information, clearly enjoys his work and was great with the kids as well, mostly chatting with our daughter who was absolutely entranced. Well worth a visit.
Jenni L — Google review
Well worth a visit! The mine was awesome and the tour guide Lisa was brilliant. She was very knowledgeable and gave us a great, unrushed tour (we were the only family). The panning for gems afterwards was great fun and the museum was much bigger than we thought as well as being really well laid out with loads of displays. My son (and wife) loved crawling through the pretend mine! We are looking forward to visiting again when you move to the new location!
Kev G — Google review
We visited with 2 adults and 5 children ages between 5-70. Everyone loved the mine tour and our tour guide was really engaging with the children. Panning for "gold" after was a great experience. The children enjoyed the museum so much that we went back the next day! I would highly recommend a visit to here.
Ben — Google review
Very friendly lady at the entrance, explained everything about the museum. Interactive exhibits and fun for kids!
Nancy D — Google review
Well worth visiting if you’re in Matlock Bath for the day. The museum is really interesting and the mine tour was very informative; in a group of mainly adults the tour guide was very engaging and had a good sense of humour. And I think £16 for both the museum and tour, during school summer holidays, for a whole year’s pass, is incredible value for money! I’ll definitely visit again.

Amazing place to visit. Great amount of knowledge and new things to learn. Some bits are old school but it adds to the feeling of the place. I didn’t see a lift for the upstairs? Price is very reasonable and you are able to go back again within 12 months. Highly recommend!!

Theme park
Water & Amusement Parks
Nestled in the picturesque hills near Matlock Bath, Gulliver's Kingdom is a delightful theme park designed specifically for families with children aged 2 to 13. This vibrant destination offers an array of over 60 rides and attractions that cater to young adventurers seeking excitement. From thrilling log flumes and roller coasters to engaging dinosaur trails, there's something for every little explorer. The park features dedicated zones like Toyland for toddlers and pirate-themed areas for older kids, ensuring everyone has a blast.
A brilliant family day out. Free parking is available and just a short wait for the gates to open. There is something to do for all ages here, visited with two children ages 12 and 15 and enjoyed by both. This park is great for those who don't like massive rollacoasters or queuing for hours to get on a ride. The queues were all short, or we were straight on. The climbing wall and the rope swing were the only two attractions that had a bigger queue or wait time. Various food and drink outlets dotted around. We chose to have a pizza, which was nicely done. Old classics like the log flume, river rapids, pirate ship and high wire seats were enjoyed by all. Photos for the log flume are reasonable prices, the pottery craft painting was only £5, and there is a gift shop at the exit to buy a keepsake or gift. Whether you've got a little one or older one there's definitely something for everyone. £65 family ticket offer for a family of 5 was great value for the amount of things to do. We would visit again.
Emi L — Google review
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 4/5 A great place for kids and families to enjoy a day out. Most of the rides are short and mainly designed for children, but the overall atmosphere is fun. The roadside views on the way here are amazing, though the uphill journey makes pushing baby strollers a bit challenging. Best to arrive early to make the most of all the rides. A few extras, like having to pay £1 for a park map, didn’t feel like the best first impression. Still, overall, it’s a lovely family-friendly destination with plenty for kids to enjoy.
M A — Google review
We enjoyed it today. Positives - booked online and took advantage of a 'secret deal'. Perfect for younger kids. No rides really too extreme and we got on almost everything. The tree top drop ride and the lost world raft ride were both really good fun. Got on the log flume three times, which we loved. Most of the staff were pleasant enough. The ski lift team were really nice and made an effort to welcome you on. Parking was fine although via a very steep, windy drive up and with cars queing to get parked you could smell clutches burning everywhere 😂 but there was an entrance into the park near the top for those parking which was decent. Negatives - Not much really. We waited in line for my little girl to go on the rock climb wall, behind a small group of girls, and we were the very next in line (and the only ones left in the queue) and they shut it because they 'only run one or the other' The other being a little toddler activity course in the same spot. When we queued both were in action. They could have let her have a go, bit annoying. Some of the attractions are a bit of a let down, the ghost house for example, and the dragons lair are a few mins each that you won't get back. Pointless walkarounds with nothing in them. Those aside, overall a decent day out and fairly priced, and I'm sure we'll probably go back before she gets too big for most of the rides. Point to note: if your not good at walking up and down steep hills, this place isn't for you. It's literally built on a hillside. You have the ski lifts which will take you up and down but expect a fair wait for one. For us, we did both and were fine with the gradients.

Great for the kids and the landscape is beautiful. The guys and gals working there were all polite and ready to help in anyway they can. Just a little mention to disabled people come fully prepared as it really is hard graft getting around because of the steep landscape.
Smileyanz — Google review
Great day out for the younger kids, we really enjoyed the rides. The wait times weren't as bad as the bigger parks. Food wasn't overly priced and good portions. The hills there could be an issue for those with mobility issues or walking with bulky buggies/prams.
Neil H — Google review
We had such an amazing time here, I was really impressed! We arrived at 12 and it closed at 5 and that was just enough time! We got on everything quickly and managed to do my daughter's favourite rides quite a few times! It's set amongst beautiful scenery, my 4 year old could go on nearly everything, and the car park is free!
Sarah H — Google review
Much better place than I thought. Adults can have fun with the kids too. Kids absolutely loved it. Area is beautiful too. Parking wise you need to get there early to find place at the bottom. I think it is better to start your journey in Gulliver's Kingdom from the bottom entry.
Dalma D — Google review
Lovely place for kids, from rides, activities, climbing ropes and lift chairs. Children loved it. Smaller rides for them to enjoy. The only set back was the height levels of rides. It was very steep going to different rides. I did see dome parents with pushchairs struggling. Not suitable for wheelchair, in my opjnion

The National Stone Centre is a museum in the Peak District, England, which exhibits geological formations and allows visitors to learn about how stones are used. The museum is also a SSSI because of its geological features.
National Stone Centre is a good place to go, it is a good walk around, there is a cafe and there is a car park but you need to be paid by the Mipermit app. There is a geology and play area so it is good for children to play. You don't need to book a ticket, it is for free.

I met friends for breakfast on a spectacular sunny day. It proved to be a great choice. Lovely sunny terrace. Great breakfast menu - we all enjoyed our choices - reasonably priced. Friendly service. Lots of parking spaces for £1.50, which meets their description of a modest fee. We meet at a lot of different places, this is somewhere we'd gladly return.

Lovely place, some great stones and amazing architecture stones. Well kept and the cafe is nice and dog friendly to for those who have dogs. Well kept had great time as a family walking round here, is car parking close the cafe and disabled car parking right next to the cafe and trails. You can pay for some activities also
Jamie B — Google review
The national stone centre is a lovely little find located just off the high peak trail. It's not easy to get from the trail as we had someone in a wheelchair, but we did drive to this place after seeing it from the trail. Lovely area with a cafe and stunning views.
Jody B — Google review
I completed the beginner’s dry stone walling course here last month. It takes a weekend and it’s hard work but really rewarding. There were seven of us on the course, led by Steve who was a bit of a legend. The general vibe of the course and the whole centre is open and friendly. The cafe is excellent and they have a couple of vegan options. The shop is also full of tempting gifts!

We went on a Family Fossil Trail with Viv and it was excellent. Good value for money and Viv was friendly, knowledgeable and great with the kids. A real asset and we enjoyed our visit
Robert W — Google review
An interesting place, although visitor centre has little to do. Cafe is well priced and food was OK. A little busy at certain times with cycle clubs. But good location to take a decent walk. Car park charges are fair, and you can walk into village from the centre. Some interesting areas, and the shop is cheap compared to others in area selling same stones etc
Mark M — Google review
The cafe is lovely and the centre is well positioned for a walk round the quarry (now well established with vegetation) or for a walk along the High Peak Trail after a visit to the centre. The exhibits were somewhat lacking unfortunately (much more could be done by informing visitors about the quarrying process, what the various rocks are used for and more about the fossils) but my 9 year old son loved panning for gems and we had a very interesting and engaging tour from Viv, who told us all about the location of the quarry 300 million years ago, and showed us evidence of various fossils on the rocks. Her talk was very engaging and interesting! Definitely worth a visit but only when the tours are being held!

Scarthin Books in Cromford is a charming and cozy bookstore offering a wide selection of new and second-hand books. The store's unique character and diverse themed sections make it a delightful place to explore, with the potential to discover hidden literary gems. While it may not be ideal for those seeking specific popular titles in a hurry, it's perfect for leisurely browsing and book enthusiasts looking for unexpected finds.
If you like reading it's a must visit! We easily spent just under an hour here only look at a handful of shelves - there really is something for everyone and a huge variety of authors, topics and styles. I found it a little overwhelming due to the sheer quantity of books from ceiling to floor, but I enjoyed looking around the rooms nonetheless. Added bonus of a great view from one of the rooms upstairs. Very reasonable pricing - I bought Jane Eyre which only cost £2.50, the book itself is of perfect quality and has no marks/annotations (which I wouldn't have minded anyway for only £2.50!)

Also it's a tearoom. What a fantastic place for books (yet I don't read) and for food and a drink (I do drink coffee).I've not read book in over 50 years yet I found this maize of a bookshop absolutely fascinating. We were here for latte, but I know the cakes and food are also highly recommended. If you're going past, stop and simply go in, you will not be disappointed. Lovely staff.

Lovely quaint bookshop in Cromford, multiple floors with a cafe at the top. Really beautiful. It’s set up in an old house - different rooms for different genres, with nice decor like it’s someone’s home library. It has a calming vibe and you can easily while away multiple hours browsing & having a coffee. Great stop before or after a walk at Cromford Mill!

I loooove Scarthin Books! I live about 30 min away so have the absolute pleasure of dropping in throughout the year when I'm in the area. They have EVERYTHING. New books, pre-loved books, books for children, books about history, books about art, books about countries, travel, music - you could (and I have) literally spend hours in there. All in a quirky, art-covered, multi-story setting. It's like something out of...well...a book! Best afternoon: fish and chips from just up the road, sit in the sunshine on the benches outside Scarthin Books and enjoy your food while watching the birds on the water, then inside for a leisurely browse. Perfection.

One of the best bookshops (and shops more generally) I’ve ever been to. Huge selection of both new and second hand books, very friendly and helpful staff and a resident cat! Fully vegetarian cafe and toilets as well. Just the most wonderful place and I can’t wait to come back.

Absolutely fantastic little restaurant. A menu containing dishes from all over the world. The food is simply sublime. The atmosphere is relaxed and very friendly. The decor is also fresh and colourful matching the food. The food is absolutely perfectly prepared, presented and served. Seriously exceptional food, very thoughtfully compiled menu, quite literally covering flavours from all over the world, very skillfully and lovingly prepared. Hard to believe you can eat that quality of food in a small market town. Amazing value for money as well. Seriously going to make the 4 hour round trip to eat there again.

What a wonderful experience. We didn't have a reservation and it was packed but we managed to get a seat at the corner. Food was amazing. Prawn curry was lovely. The highlight of the night was the Om Ali, an Egyptian bread pudding. But, they change their menus every month so check their website for the latest menu.

This is the second time we have eaten at Umami and for the second time we have all thoroughly enjoyed our experience. The staff have been welcoming, friendly and attentive and the food really is delicious and tasty. We ate the Sunday roast and the meat and accompanying vegetables were so tasty, as well as one of our party choosing from the 'menu board' which didn't disappoint either. There is plenty to choose from; a wide range of starters, mains and deserts. The interior is cosy with vibrant colours and a good choice of drinks, with the option of choosing certain beers from the Feather Star bar next door. We definitely will be heading back soon. Thank you for a fantastic lunch!

In a town of gems, this is a diamond. Our entire table had incredibly flavourful starters and mains. However, the most memorable experience was that I got my own gluten free ‘bread’ plate of gluten free poppadoms so that I didn’t have to miss out. Additionally, all of their beers were gluten free and they checked when ordering to make sure there was no cross contamination. It was so accommodating! The staff are also lovely and happy to answer any questions. I definitely recommend having a dinner here if you’re a local or a tourist.

Would definitely recommend over other places! £30 for the lot which included an upgrade from tea to coffee without question! Other places would charge that per person and be nowhere near as nice! Would definitely recommend and will be back! X

Lovely coffee shop and a bakery. Great selection of freshly made cakes, cookies and other sweets. Large section of tea with different flavors. The coffee was good and the service was lovely. Definitely worth making a stop and recharge.

A small café tucked away in the streets of Matlock serving coffee and lovely baked treats. We had the carrot cake, a cappuccino and the mini Victoria cake. The baked goods were fresh and so cute! The micro flowers were a lovely touch and crumb was tender and moist. The cafe itself was decorated beautifully and made for lovely pictures!

Stopped here almost by chance for a spot of lunch and we're so glad we did... It was delicious! The quiche was simply amazing and my partner's sandwich was big and tasty! The welcome was warm too... We left with a couple of cakes which were to die for! Wouldn't hesitate to recommend

Pleased we found this little gem. Excellent quality food. Great to find somewhere that uses good quality, doorstop style bread. Homemade cakes are delicious, wonderful coffee & thick, creamy hot chocolate. Would definitely return & highly recommend.

StarDisc in Wirksworth is a remarkable sight to behold, featuring a large illuminated stone circle that reflects the night sky. Visitors can witness the stars above mirrored in the StarDisc, creating an incredible experience. The surrounding Stoney Wood area is well-maintained and offers additional attractions such as the Infinity Loop of stones, a fire pit, and a charming labyrinth.
Great place to visit, loverly walks nearby, however, if you are driving the access road is very steep and narrow, big problem if you meet someone coming the other way and not a lot of parking.
Glyn D — Google review
We parked down in Wirksworth and walked up. It's a road so easy to walk on but very steep walk up there. Lovely spot at the top to visit the Star Disc. We went in the day so didn't see it lit up but still nice visit. There are other walks to do through Stoney Woods
Nikki B — Google review
Great place to see the night sky and the constellation. Well worth the steep climb or drive.
David F — Google review
Really impressive public art and working amphitheatre, has a compass set in a stone telling you the nearest elevations and nearest cities and then the "stone circle" has all the constellations of the night sky in the middle showing you where they are relative to where you're standing and distance to the sun! Also absolutely stunning views, even if I had to stop halfway up my hike there! Would recommend doing the journey up from Wirksworth, I parked at Black Rocks and walked through the Stone Center which was a great walk but very tiring!
Amazingly A — Google review
My partner and I visited this today, set next to a wonderful looking quarry, very picturesque, great trails to hike, and a decent array of places to eat and drink. I would have liked to have seen it at night as well and this is supposedly a wonder to behold. I am sure we will be revisiting again to see it all lit up.
Mike Z — Google review
StarDisc is an illuminated 21st century stone circle created by Aidan Shingler. It spans 12 meters (40 ft). Carved into black granite is a star chart that mirrors the northern hemisphere’s night sky. The surface of the stone circle is inscribed with the constellations, their names and a depiction of the Milky Way. Contrasting with the star chart is a perimeter of silver granite on which 12 stone seats are positioned; the seats denote the months of the year.
Nigel S — Google review
Amazing spot to visit at all times of the day, very hidden. Not the easiest place to get to by car but worth the extra effort. Even better when the lights used to work at night, hoping it gets fixed soon.

I took a walk up there after sun down. It was really peaceful and quite different to anything else. I really enjoyed it.

Park
Stoney Wood in Wirksworth is a hidden gem nestled within the stunning Peak District, perfect for those seeking an adventurous hike. As you navigate its steep paths, you'll encounter unique attractions like the Stardisc—a granite star chart that beautifully reflects the northern hemisphere's night sky. While some areas may need a bit of care, including overgrown pathways and the intriguing 'Infinity loop,' the effort to reach these spots is rewarded with breathtaking views from both the summit and viewing platform.
Hidden gem in the Peak District. Has some lovely views and some great things to look at like the 'Infinity loop' and Star Disc. Fabulous area to explore and enjoy and all free. The parkland is accessible by car with street parking and a car parking area in Wirksworth.

Steep hill to get here but the views make it worthwhile. A must see when in Wirksworth

Was staying in a nearer by holiday cottage, great place to walk the dog, amazing views. We happened to be there for a wish upon a star event which was lovely
Natasha F — Google review
Beautiful little place for a stroll, nice views and the kids enjoyed exploring. The only let down is the number of people who see no need to pick up their dog mess here despite there being plenty of dog waste bins ☹️🦮💩
Rea C — Google review
What a lovely hidden gem, although it looks like it could do with a a bit of TLC as the 'labyrinth' looks like it has not been cared for and the pathways are overgrown just like around the 'Infinity loop'. Intense climb to get to the 'star' of this wood, but well worth the effort. Views from the summit and Star Disc viewing platform of the surrounding quarries and landscape are fabulous and it's free! The parkland is accessible by car but there is no place to park here but there is a free car parking area in Wirksworth.
Graham H — Google review
Not too much to see but nice walk for lazy day, easy access, not sure why the closing time is included as there are several entries with no gate.

So we were just having a walk around as its years since our last visit and we came across a sign saying secret garden and thought it might be worth a visit. 75mtrs later we found it. It wasnt wow what an amazing place but it was wow what an interesting place. Tucked away in a little backstreet through a little gateway and it opens up into a truly secret garden. Spent about 30-40 minutes there and spoke to the woman who takes care of it. It was her grandfather's garden and had nice stories to tell you how it all came about. If your up that way take s look see and have a chat. You can also buy plants etc

My wife and I had a morning glass fusing workshop to make 4 panels for a lantern about 22cm tall. Really enjoyed it. Stevie was so helpful and patient with us and we’ve just picked it up and it’s fantastic! So pleased we did it and we’d highly recommend it to anyone.
David R — Google review
We had the most lovely morning with Stevie making lanterns, would definitely go again, really pleased with the finished pieces!

I booked a fused glass coaster workshop as a gift for a friend's birthday. Stevie was very welcoming and clearly enthusiastic about all things glass. She explained to us how we would be making our coasters, gave us a few ideas to think about and then gave us free reign to get on with our designs. It was a very relaxed approach to a workshop - she let us work to our pace, helped us when we were a bit unsure, cut some pieces of glass as needed but also gave us the space to experiment. It was also lovely to have a look at her work in the shop and buy some items with a discount for participating in the workshop. Really enjoyable experience and we were both thrilled with how our fused glass turned out.

I really enjoyed my worksop at Stevie's. I booked for a group of friends and communication was great. The workshop went well with clear instruction and advice, but left the creativeness to us. I smile every time I see my seascape in my bathroom and enjoy my decorations.
Becky M — Google review
I booked a glass fusing workshop and we thoroughly enjoyed it. Stevie was so lovely and the workshop was fun. There was a lovely selection of glass available and when needed Stevie was there to help and offer support and ideas. We would definitely come back again.
MissElenaZ — Google review
After visiting Stevie during one of her open studios and buying a few of her smaller pieces, I then booked on on to a Christmas workshop as something creative to do with my sister. We both really enjoyed the workshop and since then, I have attended more of Stevie's workshops to make a variety of wonderful glass creations. Most recently I created a large fused glass bowl for my mum's Christmas present, so much better than something shop bought; I got to create something, my mum gets a present and I supported an amazingly talented Derbyshire Maker with her business, what more could you ask for?! I totally recommend a visit to see Stevie and her work, take part in one of her workshops if you get a chance, you'll get hooked!

Had a fantastic Saturday lunch with friends. The belly pork was so flavourful, my friends had the steak pie which was also excellent. It is miles from where we live but we are already planning to return. The staff were brilliant. Real food not microwaved muck. I heartily recommend this pub.

My partner and I came in for a spot of food on a Sunday afternoon. About 2pm ish. We both settled on the steak and stout pie. I cannot describe how wonderful the food was. The steak was delicious and tender. The pastry and flaky and perfect. A huge thank you to Ash who was our wonderful server and special thanks to Jacob behind the bar. Lovely atmosphere and a great selection of drinks and food. The secret beer garden was a great spot in the sunshine. Cannot rate them high enough. If you are around please check them out. Went here for Saturday lunch with our 2 dogs. Great location from Ecclesbourne Valley railway. Right from our arrival hospitality and service was outstanding, Jane made a real fuss of our dogs and was great with one who can be a bit nervous. They loved her! Great menu, difficult choice as all sounded so good. Food did not disappoint, flavoursome, good portions, well cooked and nicely presented. Good price too and nice homely atmosphere. Highly recommend.

Great village pub and the food is excellent. Good range of drink; both spirits and ales. Can highly recommend the steak and ale (stout) pie along with the Sunday lunch. Not the cheapest pub (in keeping with other pubs in the area), but it's definitely worth a visit. Quiz night on a Thursday.

Called in for a late afternoon meal on Saturday, after getting our caravan set up at a local camp. Service was excellent and the food was great too. Whilst there we booked in for Sunday lunch and were not disappointed, quality was again excellent and the Sunday lunch was a substantial portion and great value for money. They have a nice beer garden and the whole pub (including restaurant) was dog friendly which was a great find for us.

We chatted to Carlos the owner and he was so friendly and made us feel welcomed. Would definitely return and recommend to anyone if in the area! Thank you!

I'm reluctant to be critical of this restaurant as the manager was kind and appreciative, but honesty must prevail. It was difficult to find a parking place in this busy little town, even on a cold weekday in December. Only a couple of guys and me in the place. An air of sadness hung around the room. I could tell that business was bad from the look on the faces of the staff, and because the manager told me "business is bad." My starter was nondescript, I can't remember what I had. The ragu with penne was OK but no better than my own. The house wine should have stayed at home. On the way back, I passed a French restaurant that was buzzing. A la recherche du diner perdu.
Ranbir H — Google review
Good food and friendly service. Not a large menu but when you see the size of the kitchen you understand why. It's a small place and a small kitchen. All the food we had was tasty. The waiter was friendly and helpful. When the chef, from Rimini, was not cooking he was chatty and friendly. Will try to go back next time we are in the area.

It’s only a small cafe so feels nice and cosy. It’s quite rustic looking. The food is made and prepared in the cafe part so you can smell it cooking. The staff were really nice and the food was freshly cooked. The cakes looked and tasted great. The scones were huge! The toasted sandwiches were made with nice bread and came with a lovely side salad and delicious homemade coleslaw. The toasted sandwich was £8 but good value compared to many places and a very good portion size. It was delicious. My friends had the pecan and cinnamon cake as loved it

What a lovely cafe! We arrived late in the day, around 4:15. Despite it being the end of the day, Emma (who is a *delight*) cooked us up a tasty, filling, and affordable late lunch! My wife and I split a carafe of French pressed coffee (dark and tasty), a toasted cheese and onion sandwich which came with a little side of salad, and the Vegetarian Breakfast. The veg breakfast is two pieces of thick toast done to a light golden brown topped with scrambled eggs and sauteed mushrooms. The eggs were perfect, still moist and not overly firm, but definitely cooked through. The mushrooms had a light sear on them - delicious, and I don't usually like mushrooms. On the side there were some barbecue beans and a roasted tomato. All of this came to £10.50! We left with full bellies and new knowledge about the area. Did you know there were once 72 pubs in Wirksworth?! We want to come back on a Saturday to try the Full English Breakfast (weekends only). Definitely recommend!

Scenic Railroads
Peak Rail offers a nostalgic experience with vintage steam and diesel trains running on a disused line, providing various dining trips. The railway operates throughout the year, offering Sunday lunches, afternoon teas, and cream teas on the train. Group and coach tour discounts are available along with disabled facilities. Special events are held regularly for families and enthusiasts to enjoy. Visitors can also participate in steam experience courses or take control of a steam locomotive.
A wonderfully tranquil way to spend the weekend. Keep an eye on the program so that you can plan your visit and make the most of this lovely railway. We've managed to ride various old steamers and love the journey in the well kept traditional carriages. The different stations are worth a stop as they are also lovingly maintained and include a small shop and cafe.

Having visited most preserved railways in the UK, ive rated Peak Rail by comparison. Entry fee is reasonable and nice scenery too. Cafe very over priced. Carriages not that well looked after and dirty. Pleasant enough for half day out but probably wouldn't return to be fair. There's other railways that are worse but more that better than Peak Rail. These views are my own.

The railway is open on Sundays, Bank Holidays (from Easter to October), and Saturdays during the summer holidays from 12pm to 5pm.
First visit after seeing the signs at Black Rock. Run by volunteers is a supper narrow gauge quarry railway pulled by a couple of diesel locos. Some parking on the site but when busy you can park at the Black Rock carpark and follow the disused railway to Steeple Grange, about a 10 min walk. There were two rides, one along its main line and the other to one of the quarry's. At the quarry there was a super little talk about it and where the stone was used. There's a small shop in the ticket office which also sold drinks and simple snacks - cash or card which was very useful. All the staff were brilliant, happy to chat, helpful and very knowledgeable which really added to the visit.they run mainly Sundays in the summer but do check the website prior to travelling. We found it was only a 5 min drive from Cromford Canal and Mills so could be a great combination visit. Site is dog friendly and they can be accommodated on the train. We will definitely pay many more visits. Adult ticket £6.00 ( sep 2024).

Found this completely by chance and just made it for the last runs of the day. Two train rides and a fun geology lesson for a pretty modest price. Run by very friendly volunteers and recommended for anyone from small children to mature adults.

Lovely little steam railway that goes up the local hill through the forest. The team running it are so helpful and friendly and were more than happy for my step father in a wheelchair to hang around while myself and mum enjoy a ride in the mini train. They also have a little shop and toilets in the station which was handy. there is no real car park for the public, however there is the large black rocks car park a short walk away. This railway is located just off the high peak trail so its nice to enjoy when you are out for a walk.

What a great little industrial railway and a really friendly welcoming group of volunteers with endless knowledge on the local area they even insisted i brought my motorcycle in the yard so it was safer. Well worth stopping by and a very fair entrance fee, glad to have finally seen the railway in action after passing it many times while on the High Peak Trail.

A lovely little railway. Each ticket gets you 2 train rides. The first and longer ride goes from the train shed to Middleton and back along a line running through a tree lined cutting. On this journey, we had a young lad as guard on the train named Benjamin, who really knew his stuff. Gave us a great chat about the railway and its history. Very interesting. All the staff/volunteers were very friendly and funny and made the visit great. The second ride was much shorter and just went into the nearby quarry. There was a geologist who told us about about the rocks and fossils found in the quarry which was very interesting.

If you're in Wirksworth and looking for a unique cinematic experience, The Northern Light Cinema is an absolute must-visit. Nestled within the charming confines of an 18th-century Malthouse, this independent cinema boasts a quirky interior that adds to its charm. It showcases a diverse selection of films, from the latest blockbusters to beloved classics, ensuring there's something for everyone. The atmosphere at The Northern Light Cinema is both stylish and inviting.
What a beautiful place! A tiny boutique cinema nestled in the gorgeously cute town of Wirksworth. The stunning 1920s Art Deco bar offers a decent range of beers, wines, soft drinks and cocktails, where the friendly staff go the extra mile to make sure your cinema experience is the best it can be. The films on offer tend to be more interesting than the usual superhero fare showing at the multiplexes and the auditorium itself is filled with comfy seats and sofas for super soft comfort. Worth the journey from anywhere. Highly recommend!

What a delightful cinema. The screen is actually pretty big given the auditorium is quite small. Great sound quality too. Superb place to see a movie.

Our first visit to our very own Cinema in Wirksworth to see the Amy Winehouse movie which is excellent. We had pre movie drinks at the bar, and it all felt very special. The staff were really attentive and had time for a chat and made us feel very welcome. We had a 2 seater sofa and took our drinks in with us. Definitely going back again soon.

Long time members of The Ritz in Belper, only used to go to The Northern Light now and again but now go there regularly. Lovely independent cinema.

Loved this place. The owners are so friendly. They've created a really friendly, cozy vibe. The bar area before you go into the cinema is welcoming and offers a huge range of nibbles and sweets to take through with you. The cinema itself has comfy chairs and sofas, and a front room feel - so different from the sterile multiplex cinemas. It's small yet has a wonderful vibe.
Michelle B — Google review
Very nice small private cinema. Very welcoming staff, easy to book online. Bar and snacks available.
Sue D — Google review
Whilst staying in Wirksworth we noted this cinema in local attractions. We decided to visit and had a very enjoyable evening in this quirky cinema. The cinema layout included settees and groups of two chairs with side tables for your drinks and snacks. The bar on entry sold a nice selection of alcohol and non alcohol drinks. There was also tea and coffee and snacks available. A lovely evening of entertainment.
Nigel J — Google review
A wonderful, cosy and unique little cinema. The seating is an eclectic combination of armchairs and double sofas. My preference is the luxury seating which has loads of space in front (very handy for nipping out to the loo or bar). There are tables for drinks and rugs to snuggle up in. The screen isn't enormous (obviously) but is certainly big enough. If you become a member you get some free seats and a reduced price which quickly pays for itself. Although it's small it's not claustrophobic. It's my favourite cinema.

Ecclesbourne Valley Railway, located in Wirksworth, is a historic steam train ride that operates on a line established in 1867. The railway offers a nine-mile journey through the picturesque White Peak area, starting from Duffield and ending at Ravenstor near the High Peak Trail and National Stone Centre. Visitors can enjoy heritage diesel railcar services with four trains running daily during summer weekends and select weekdays.
Brilliant afternoon ride on the Ecclesbourne valley steam train, this 9 mile ride from Wirksworth to Duffield and return was a taste of the past. Our adventure was organised through Fox and Edwards events which included either fish and chips or afternoon tea but just to see the area on a steam carriage ride was brilliant.

A nice experience going on a Steam train ride. Lovely cake and scones on board, with tea or coffee. Friendly, welcoming staff. Toilets on site, free car park. Lovely ride. The views were not amazing, but still we enjoyed it. Nice museum with plenty books and interesting things inside.

Lovely heritage railway running through countryside from Wirkworths to Duffield. Wirksworth is main station with several bits n pieces to see, it's just a shame you can't get closer to some of stored rolling stock and engines. Well worth a visit if im the area.

This was a fantastic station to venture to for the end of the steam railway, with long platforms where the trains use the points to change their side of the carriages! Plenty of stock is stationed here and the mini museum/shop is really a hidden gem. Rail tools are shown from olden days alongside maps, timetables and even advertisement posters!

14s @ 60 Gala - 27 July 2024 - spent the Saturday at this special event travelling up and down the line behind these wonderful diesel locomotives. Had a fantastic day, which began with a good full English breakfast on the first train out of Wirksworth at 7.50am, and culminating ìn a trip behind all 7 class 14s from Duffield to Wirksworth in the afternoon - a great day out for an old enthusiast.

Great little railway, we visited for the first time and it was a Dinosaur special event which was good. As a heritage railway enthusiast, I loved the little detail of it, little lollipop tokens with the logo on for the kids at the ticket office, pencils with the railway title on and even the bags in the cafe had stickers on too. Fab little railway it's definitely worth a visit.

Sights & Landmarks
Churches & Cathedrals
The imposing St Mary's Church in Wirksworth is a popular tourist destination with impressive Saxon carvings dating back to the 13th century. The church is also home to important members of the Gell family and Anthony Lowe, as well as lovely stained glass windows depicting local scenes. The peaceful atmosphere of the church is enhanced by its 1000 year old T'owd Man sculpture.
This is not only a beautiful church, it is probably one of the most interesting and fascinating churches in the country. Most of the building dates from the 13th to 15th centuries but there are parts from Anglo-Saxon times. It has wonderful stained glass windows. It is particularly notable for its Anglo-Saxon carvings such as a large coffin lid from the 7th century. There are numerous other medieval carvings, stone crosses, grave slabs, tombs and most famously "T'owd Man", the oldest representation of a miner in the world. There are leaflets and information booklets available for a donation.

This is a surprisingly large church with a host of interesting features. The information boards are quite the best I have seen in a church and the small information/question paddles ideal for taking around the church. A projected film of the T'Owd Man unique. Even has a Burne-Jones/Morris stained glass window. Well worth a visit if you are in the area.

Travelled 300 miles and made a special detour to see the Anglo-Saxon carvings here. Turned out the church was booked out for the whole weekend for some event and you weren't allowed in. The trip was partially saved by a very kind gentleman agreeing to escort us to the main carving where I was able to take some quick photos before we had to leave.

Indian restaurant
Wirksworth Balti is a popular choice for delicious Indian cuisine, especially if you're in the mood for a satisfying meal. The portions are generous, and the communication and service are excellent, making it convenient for group orders or special occasions. The Lamb Bhuna Medium is highly recommended for its ample meat and perfectly balanced spices. For those who enjoy a spicy kick, the lamb pathia comes with tender meat and an option to customize the heat level.
Ordered a takeaway to be delivered to the camp site we were staying at. Service was excellent, delivered in less time than predicted & right to our caravan. Food was terrific and there was plenty of it (looking forward to my lunch on Thursday). All in all fantastic service, quality and value for money - I would heartily recommend Wirksworth Balti.

I wasn't the biggest fan of Indian food, however, my wife suggested we had one for tea, I scrutinised the menu and picked something that sounded quite appealing and my goodness, it changed my whole mindset, absolutely loved it and it is now my takeaway if choice. Flawless food and absolutely fantastic staff.

We visited Wirksworth Balti as a treat on the final night of our break in the town and I have got to say that's possibly the best ever curry I've ever had!! I opted for the Lamb Bhuna Medium and I was impressed with how much meat was in the dish, it was cooked to perfection. The sauce and spices were perfect and just the right amount of spice. The onion Bhajis were also very nice as was the kheema naan.

If the SAS were going to use a Balti takeaway it would be the Wirksworth Balti. Not because the Madras kicks your back doors in the next morning and let’s rip, but because they value taste, reasonable prices and timely service.

Experience the essence of the French countryside at Le Mistral Wirksworth, a charming French restaurant located in Wirksworth, Matlock DE4 4ET, United Kingdom. This establishment offers an authentic French dining experience and serves as a bar, cafe, and restaurant. With over 10 years of serving French cuisine to the locals, it is known for its morning café offerings and bistro-style lunch menu featuring classic French dishes like Croque Madame and Moules Mariniere.
Excellent restaurant. Top class food and lovely food. Great menu and so much to choose from. All freshly made. My only criticism is I had a Bouillabaisse, and it must have had a star anise in the amazing stew. I bit into it, and aniseed filled my mouth, which overpowered the other beautiful flavours. However, it is a top restaurant and will return.
David D — Google review
Had lovely service here, warm and friendly. Shame that the food wasn't as good. This was our second visit the first was so much better. The squid was very over cooked and when replaced whilst cooked better it was tasteless and also had the Croque Madam, again this was overcooked with crispy bordering on burnt edges, and why no dressing on salad garnish a little mustard vinaigrette would have really helped. Was disappointed after a lot better first visit last year.
Ian Y — Google review
Popped in as a couple for lunch, had an excellent croque Monsieur whilst my wife had a steak. Food was really tasty and the setting felt authentically French. Would really recommend for anyone after a classy Bistro in the Derbyshire area. Good for gluten free as well.

French style bar/bistro in the centre of Wirksworth with good menu choices, specials board and lunchtime offer. Extra seating downstairs. Extensive wine selection. Only real downside was that we struggled to find anywhere to park nearby on a Friday night.
Nigel P — Google review
Fantastic light lunch on Sunday. The Mistral Club baguette was delicious. Chicken, bacon, tomato, cucumber and lettuce with a light garlic mayonnaise washed down with elderflower presse. We didn't book but we're warmly welcomed and seated at a table downstairs. Service was a little slow but the food was worth waiting for! Highly recommend 👏
Mandy W — Google review
Took the opportunity to visit Le Mistral whilst away camping. The menu was fairly compact but covered a lot of bases, especially with a separate specials board. Food and service were both excellent just wished we had something similar in our home town.

Lovely little bistro. Very delightful food.
Lesley G — Google review
Oooh I really wanted to love this place. Whilst the setting downstairs is cosy and well decorated, the mussels we had were dry and I don’t think they were cooked in the sauce marinière. The chips weren’t great and the French bread is cooked from frozen as others have said. Sadly, whilst service was pleasant, the meal was not worth the price.

Gino's is a charming little Italian eatery that offers a truly unique dining experience. Run single-handedly by its passionate owner, this gem serves up fantastic and fresh food that takes center stage. Start your meal with a refreshing salad, then indulge in some of the best pizzas you'll find outside of Italy, crafted with high-quality fillings on authentic dough. Don't forget to save room for their delightful homemade ice cream for dessert!
Truly unique experience, food was fantastic and fresh. This is a one woman show, where the food comes ahead of everything. We had salad to start, a brilliant pizza each and home made ice cream to finish. Everything so tasty and good value for money. It reminds me of some of the best street food from Asian but pizza in the UK. When booking leave a message and the owner will get back to you.
Rhys W — Google review
Sadly, our experience was not hygienic. The glasses were not clean, one had a human hair inside, the others had grubby fingerprints along the top edge. Cutlery had stains and were left on the tabletop surface rather than on napkins (COVID concern). There were only 2 soft drinks available - we ordered both and they were both out of date - the raspberry and elderflower drink expired in 2015. Ingredients weren’t available for some of the pizzas on the menu, although this is understandable for a small independent eatery. We still ate here, the pizzas & garlic bread were nice as it’s baked in a proper pizza oven. Having a Food Hygiene Standards certificate would’ve been reassuring though. Hope Gino’s can take this feedback constructively and improve because it has so much potential.

Nestled in the charming town of Wirksworth, the Wirksworth Heritage Centre is a delightful destination for anyone eager to delve into the rich history of this picturesque area. This small yet informative museum offers an engaging experience with its interactive displays that cater to visitors of all ages. Here, you can explore the fascinating past of Wirksworth, from its significant lead mining heritage dating back to Roman times to its evolution as a key center for lead ore production in England.
A day out by X17 to Wirksworth. Lovely birthday lunch and then a little stroll. Amazed to see such a lovely complex in place after waiting for many years. The lift was useful for creaky oldies. Many interesting and quirky items on display. The staff were charming and helpful. A lovely café with interesting decor. Acoustic ceiling tiles? Nice cake and hot drinks.

Called in on our way back from Cromford Mill. It's only a small museum, which will take around 30 minutes to look round, but it's worth calling in. It explains about the lead mining industry in the area and what happened in the aftermath. We picked up a walking tour leaflet and wandered over to the church, which is definitely worth a visit, as it's absolutely beautiful. The history within those walls is incredible. In fact, the whole village is worth a wander to look at at the old buildings (which are everywhere).

We went here for a light lunch. The lunch was enjoyable. The staff though were not so friendly. It was our 1st visit. There was another young man visiting. He was very polite. He was obvisiouly neurodivergent. On his way out he was very polite, thanking them for his food and saying goodbye... he had no response so said it again and was just ignored again! They ignored 3 customers saying thank you and goodbye. We shall not be returning.

I'd love to go child free so I can read everything as only caught snippets while our 2yr old explored. She enjoyed it though. This is a magnificent place to visit. At the top of the hill is breathtaking views across the county. According to the information dial. You can see in excess of 20 miles on a clear day. There is no car park, as the National Trust closed them about 3 years due to apparent antisocial behaviour in the evenings and nights. Due to the lack of light pollution it would be an amazing place to visit to see the night sky. Parking is limited to the makeshift lay-by at the entrance to the old car parks. It's about 70 meter walk to the top and there is no seating but plenty of flat ground to sit on.

Amazing views from this site. There is a car park, although I guess the original car park was slightly lower and has been blocked off. Walking up to here will involve quite a lot of road walking as there don't seem to be many paths but the lanes are reasonably quiet

So this is how society works now, is it? Pleasure and enjoyment for the masses is removed, because of the few? 70 years ago some people did something about that, at Kinder. Perhaps our freedom to roam is being taken away again? We all have to miss out because of a few people who drop litter and be unsociable. This place was left to the National Trust for the enjoyment of EVERYONE. Not everyone is enjoying it, though. Therefore, National Trust have a duty to do what it takes to ensure this continues. There is no tea room or gift shop here, so I guess it's not important for the 'Trust'. You can't get parked anymore and on the days you may get parked in the one spaced layby, some pri** has created a Motocross track right next to the site so the peace and wildlife aspect has been destroyed. On a good day the views are literally endless! 67 miles to Shropshire is some view and if the sun is setting well, the tops are illuminated to produce a dazzling spectacle. Why, why, why has this site been allowed to become destroyed by neighbouring land owners and a tiny percentage of users?

Great views all around. The road into the car park is very bad now, with huge potholes, though.

Alport heights is a beautiful viewpoint, only 30 minutes or so outside of Derby. With gorgeous views toward the south, it’s a perfect spot for watching the sunset, and, due to the low levels of light pollution, a personal favourite for watching the Perseid meteor shower. While the car park had recently re-opened, spaces are limited as only the upper car park is accessible and electronic gates close at 7pm in the summer.

Carpark has been closed for months now due to antisocial behavior. I contacted national trust about this and they don't even acknowledge it as an NT site. Sadly I think it'll be gone forever. This has been a very important site for radio amateurs like myself over the years but now it's only accessible on foot it seriously limits what you can do up there. This was the best site for miles around and probably one of the best in the country.

Car park open after recent closures - now with an automatic gate see pictures for times.

One of the best hidden gems in Derbyshire. Amazing view, particularly when it’s a clear day. You can see for miles!

Nestled in a unique location, The Country Kitchen offers a delightful dining experience that defies its surroundings. Despite being attached to a care home, this charming eatery is impeccably clean and serves up delicious meals at wallet-friendly prices. It's not just the locals who enjoy it; school children frequent the spot too! With a serene atmosphere and well-organized seating, patrons can savor fantastic breakfasts featuring generous portions and friendly service.
Don't let the old diners put you off. This place is attached to a care home, but it is spotless, the food is good and inexpensive. The local school children also use it. And the old folk don't bite!

Visited Country Kitchen for first time in 18 months after moving house and massively disappointed 😥 Ordered three jacket potato meals and, after 30 minutes of waiting, had to ask why they hadn't come. When they did arrive, the jacket potatoes were the smallest I've ever been served in my life. Certainly wasn't value for money. Really disappointing as the place used to be brilliant.

The Bear Inn, a historic coaching inn from the 1500s, exudes charm and warmth in Derbyshire. It offers versatile accommodation with 7 en-suite hotel rooms and 2 holiday cottages. The inn serves real ales and delectable food in a picturesque setting, whether indoors or in the beer garden overlooking the Amber Valley. Visitors rave about their impressive carvery featuring four meats and an array of free-flowing vegetables and sides.
An unforgettable experience in the heart of the Peak District! We had an amazing meal at The Bear Inn — truly one of the highlights of our trip. The 16-hour braised ox cheek with red wine reduction was absolutely out of this world — tender, flavourful, and cooked to perfection. We also tried the fish and chips, which were beautifully crispy on the outside, flaky and fresh on the inside — classic done right! It's the kind of place where you instantly feel at home. Nestled in the stunning Peak District, it’s the ideal spot for a relaxing meal after a day of exploring. Highly recommend — we’ll definitely be coming back!

My family and I enjoyed a very good Saturday lunch here this weekend. The service was swift. The menu was varied, but not to complicated and the food itself was very good. All serve piping hot and tasting delicious! Washed down by a pint of Timothy Taylors Landlord, life gets no better. Highly recommended. Thank you.

Had a stunning family meal at the Bear. Starters, mains and dessert - not a single one of them disappointed! The halloumi I had was out of this world, the salmon with lobster was cooked to perfection, and the crumble was so fresh and delicious! Staff were welcoming and very accommodating for our group size - nothing was too much trouble! The best food I’ve had in years!

Stayed at the Bear for a week. Wonderful people, fantastic food and great building. Chris,Wendy,Sarah, and all the staff were so friendly and welcoming. It was very hot when we stayed but the building kept us lovely and cool. We will be back.

Great pub in the countryside, with a really good menu and great food. Was sunny enough to sit outside, but you do need to order back at the bar. Despite that the service was very good, highly recommend a visit.

After reading mixed reviews, I decided to book and find out for myself. Booked a table for two for our 28th wedding anniversary. Glad we did. We didn't book a room. But the food we had was perfect, gambas pil pil king prawns in garlic and chilli-infused olive oil. Cream and a brownie for us both. My compliments were passed to the chef. I wish the new owners and staff every success.

We were surprised to be asked to settle our room bill - £304 for 2 nights inc breakfast - the moment we arrived in reception before even being shown our room. In good faith we settled the bill. The way to the room was through the old building which smelled of damp covered over with air freshener products - not pleasant. Fire doors were covered in cobwebs and detritus on carpet. The staff member struggles to get key in door as lock miissaligned with handle keyhole. The room was poorly cleaned. Thick dust on surfaces. It was for cost of room very small. No chest of drawers for clothes. Just few pegs for hanging. No wardrobe. Architrave roughly fastened with exposed screws. No care with scruffy decor. Shower screen broken and poorly maintained. The shower pressure was pathetic - think watering can at best. Toilet seat was missing studs and so slid off base bowl in use. Tiny kettle inadequate which was to be plugged in to an extension lead which was nailed to skirting - think garden shed electric supply standard. Cable TV signal erratic. Again corridors showed evidence of untreated mould and damp. At the wedding we attended when I told a local we were staying at Bear with no prompting said " they don't have cleaners there". I feel sorry for staff who are friendly and food was more than okay - good even. But whoever owns business is leaving staff to front this inadequate maintained and tired overpriced accommodation. At first breakfast we ordered avacodo on toast from breakfast menu. Very pleasant staff said avacodo has not been delivered yet. We accepted this with tired patience. Next morning same staff said before we could ask " the Avocado never did arrive" laugh... Not good enough by a long way
