Nestled beneath a seemingly ordinary farmhouse in Crail, Scotland's Secret Bunker is an extraordinary glimpse into Cold War history. This underground museum, hidden 100 feet below the surface for over four decades, was designed to serve as a command center in the event of a nuclear attack. Visitors can explore its vast two-story layout—equivalent to the size of two soccer fields—connected by a lengthy tunnel and fortified with blast doors.
Visited here in July with my teenage son. It was very interesting. I was worried I would feel claustrophobic due to it being underground, but you forget this aspect quite quickly. We easily spent nearly 2 hours here and could probably have stayed longer. Rooms are a literal time capsule of how they would have been. There was plenty of information to read and the 2 cinemas showing films were good as well, my only minor criticism was the quieter parts of the film we were watching was sometimes drowned out if there was a loud part in the film through the wall. My son found it all very interesting and loved the visit as did I, however I found the fact this place existed at all to be very sobering indeed.

Scotland's Secret Bunker was a blast to explore! A bit overpriced for what it is, but totally worth it to see how this Cold War-era bunker is built. Amazing to tour the underground complex and get a peek into history - learning about its purpose and the secrecy surrounding it adds to the intrigue. If you're into military history or bunkers, it's a cool spot to check out. Plenty of parking around.

Visited today with my partner, we had a great time. It’s very surreal, so much history and original items on display. So strange being below the surface but you don’t even notice it. Cool tanks on display outside as well which was a nice touch. Very interesting!
Stephanie D — Google review
This was an amazing place to visit full of insightful information about what would have happened if Nukes were ever launched in anger. Lots to see, not much to interact with but that's understandable. There is a small cafe inside with bright and cheerful staff, providing good quality hot and cold food.
Christopher M — Google review
The secret is out, some nutter has put up signs advertising the exact location! Well worth a visit to. This site is both fascinating and terrifying at the same time. Step back in time to the good old days when the spectre of nuclear annihilation loomed large over everyday life. Such wonderful memories. Give the cat a pet from me.
Calum M — Google review
Fantastic place to visit. Very interesting, lots of information. Friendly staff. There is a cafe which serves food and drinks. It is underground and can feel a bit clostrophobic but it's a bunker so it will feel odd.
Sarah M — Google review
Oue first experience in a proper bunker. Absolutely great place to visit. It's really very interesting.
Jordi G — Google review
This place was really interesting. Despite the fact I'm not really into military history I still had a great and very educational visit. It's so much bigger than I expected and there's so many rooms. Some of the displays were a bit dated and could do with a refresh, however it wasn't a major issue. Look out for the two cats who live in the bunker - unfortunately we didn't spot them!

Had my wedding reception at Crail Community Hall. An absolutely gorgeous venue and with very little effort it became the most magic place to celebrate my wedding with my friends and family
Riley — Google review
Our wedding at the Crail Community Hall was in August 2024 and couldn’t have been happier with the experience. The hall is owned by the Crail Community Partnership charity, and it was lovely to know that our hire fee was supporting the local community and helping to preserve this beautiful space—not lining the pockets of a faceless company. The venue itself is fantastic. We had around 100 guests, plus staff, and there was plenty of room for everything we planned: a ceilidh, potluck, bar, pizza and an ice cream cart! The main hall was perfect for the festivities, while the back room provided a great space for serving food. We also used the garden opposite for photos and as a general outdoor space to enjoy the weather. We hired additional lights from Steven Page Lighting and sourced chairs and tables from Vintage Gathering—highly recommended, as it pushed the venue from lovely to absolutely magical. A big thank you to Jem and Geraldine, who were both incredibly helpful and responsive throughout the process. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a welcoming, flexible venue with a real sense of community.

We had our wedding at Crail Community Hall in August this year. Living in Crail it was important and special to us that we got married in our local venue. The hall was everything we wanted and more! Beautiful authentic space with lot's of room for eating & dancing! The dance floor is also sprung! The kitchen is brilliantly equipped for caterers with easy access. Crail is so lucky to have the community hall for events. If you're looking to embrace a village hall feel for your wedding day this venue is definitely for you! We were able to make the hall completely our own. The coordination process in the run up to the day was so smooth & easy. Any questions we needed were answered really quickly by Geraldine. Thank you for making our day so special! Love Emily & Hamish x

My wife and I got married here in the summer of 2022. It was really a magical venue for both our the ceremony and reception. We decorated the hall exactly like we wanted and the floor was perfect for a ceilidh at the end of the night. There is also a small garden opposite that was great for guest to chill in the sun and get photos 👍🏻

We booked the Crail Comminity hall for our daughter’s 18th. A fantastic size and layout for the event, with great kitchen facilities too. Great time had by all and a big thanks to the CCH team for keeping in touch and helping us throughout!
Derek S — Google review
This was a great venue for our family get together. The hall has great facilities, a well equipped kitchen, 2 spacious halls etc. We booked both halls but mainly used the larger hall. The hall would make a fantastic venue for weddings with a lovely entrance at the front of the building, parking provision on the main road and on the side of the building. I give the hall 5 stars for the facilities this hall provides and brilliant service we received from the staff who were easy to reach during the weekend and helped with our booking.

Visitor Centers
Located in Scotland, Kingsbarns Distillery is a family-owned establishment housed in a charming early 19th-century farm steading. Visitors can enjoy various tours led by expert guides, exploring the distillery's history and manufacturing process. The ticket includes access to an exhibition space and tastings of their renowned spirits such as Kingsbarns New Make spirit and Dream to Dram single malt whisky.
What a great experience!! Very nice place in the middle of the country side. The guide was nice, competent and friendly open to all our questions and doubts! We explored a bit of history linked to the distillery and then how the whisky is made. It's also a good experience for your sense of smell! The final step was a taste of three different whisky tastings! Absolutely recommended!!
Isma M — Google review
Lovely small distillery with a wide selection of whisky and gin to purchase, tours, food and more. Had a 3 x 25ml tasting from their core range with a 1-to-1 talk from one of the tour guides, Renè, which was very valued. Highly recommended visit if you're ever in the area.
Ashley B — Google review
Beautiful building inside and out, superb spirits, and fantastic tastings! I didn’t take a tour because I was short on time but had a wonderful experience with tasting four Darnley’s Gins. I was on my own but still given awesome personal attention. My tastings included trying them neat as well as mixed with either tonic water or ginger ale. I couldn’t believe it was free to try them. Instead, I purchased several different sized bottles of both whisky and gin as gifts and even got a free glass when I signed up for their WiFi (thank you!). I also found out they ship to 39 U.S. states so I’ll always be able to have it at home. I’m so glad I decided to spontaneously add Kingsbarns to my itinerary!

Superb tour, very informative, I didn't know about the difference between Highland peaty whiskey and Lowland Whiskey. I realise I love Lowland Whisky like the ones at Kingsbarns. The staff were so friendly and welcoming. We also tried and brought some gin, it was fab too.

2 stars for the cafe. Service was extremely slow. We ordered two take away coffees, which took nearly 20 minutes to arrive. They arrived with no lids as they had apparently ran out of lids that morning (we arrived around 11.30am). Cafe was not busy but one young female seemed to be left to do all the orders herself. Coffee was good quality when it eventually arrived.
Isla L — Google review
We had a superb time at the distillery. The tour was insightful and our guide very knowledgeable. Whisky was delicious. Highly recommend.
Melissa J — Google review
Kingsbarns Distillery is a beautifully restored 18th-century farm steading located just a few minutes from St Andrews, in the peaceful rolling countryside of the East Neuk of Fife. The buildings were originally part of the Cambo Estate and served as a traditional farm courtyard and grain store for generations. After years of being unused, they were thoughtfully refurbished into the distillery, keeping the original stonework, timber beams and charming courtyard character intact. The idea for the distillery came from Douglas Clement, a local golf caddie who spent years working on the courses around St Andrews. He noticed that visiting golfers often asked where the nearest distillery was, and there simply wasn’t one nearby to visit. Determined to change that, he began the long process of securing support, planning permission and funding to restore the old steading and create a new Lowland whisky destination. The project truly came to life when backing came from Wemyss Family Spirits (also known for Wemyss Malts), an independent, family-owned Scottish whisky company with a strong reputation in blending and cask selection. With their investment and whisky expertise, Kingsbarns opened its doors in 2014, welcomed its first visitors, and began distilling spirit with the intention of producing a light, fruity, approachable Lowland single malt that reflects the landscape around it. Kingsbarns uses locally grown Fife barley, and their water source comes from an aquifer deep below the distillery site. Their whisky is typically matured in ex-bourbon casks and gentle sherry casks, which helps bring out bright orchard-fruit sweetness, soft vanilla, citrus freshness and a clean, easygoing style. One of their notable whiskies, “Dream to Dram”, is named in honour of the founder’s original vision finally becoming reality. The tour itself is warm, friendly and well-paced. Staff are excellent at explaining each stage of the whisky-making process in a relaxed and engaging way, without rushing. The tasting at the end is a highlight, offering a chance to experience the distillery’s signature style up close. The visitor centre is comfortable, well-designed, and includes a tasting bar and a lovely shop featuring distillery exclusives. Overall, Kingsbarns is a welcoming, peaceful and thoughtfully presented distillery that balances history, local roots and a modern approach to whisky. It’s a great visit for both newcomers to whisky and enthusiasts. A calm, inviting place with a genuine sense of local pride — definitely worth the trip if you’re in or around St Andrews.

Park the ev here, there is a charge place scotland charger. Dog walk down to the beach through the Jurassic Woods of Cambo Gardens full of ferns and fungi. Walk the beach and return for good coffee and cakes at the distillery. The Cafe is dog friendly. Then buy gin and or whiskey. Both are lovely. Grand! Love it. We'll be back.

Cambo Gardens, located near the distillery, is part of the renowned Cambo Estate. The gardens are famous for their snowdrop season but are worth visiting year-round. Visitors can explore the elegant Georgian walled gardens and may even encounter adorable piglets in spring. The Stables visitor center offers a cafe and gift shop, while the estate encompasses a grand stately home and over 70 acres of lush grounds.
Beautiful! We visited on a lovely spring day and loved it. The daffodils, grape hyacinths, tulips, hellebores, snowdrops (last ones) & other spring flowers were outstanding. Wood anemone and primroses through the woods to the beach with a stream/brook babbling away. The cafe was also lovely with a very friendly lady that brought us our drinks and cake. It had a lovely ambience. We found one person a little unfriendly at the till despite us trying to engage with her but that was a small negative. I would love to return in the summer or autumn another time to see what the gardens offer then. Such good value too.
Julie H — Google review
Lovely garden, forest walk and cafe. Earlier in the summer the foliage and flowers are amazing. On this August day most of the garden has seen its glory, but it’s still a nice haven and lovely walk through the woods. It’s also a perfect stop for Fife Coastal Path walkers to have a break. The cafe serves very good food and their bathrooms are clean and easily accessible. Bonus for those without a car is there is a bus stop just outside the driveway.

We visit Cambo Gardens every summer, a beautiful place to spend a day. Lovely grounds to walk round with a beautiful walled garden. There's also a wooded walk that takes you down to a very clean beach. The cafe is always busy (understandably), food is nice with a good vegan selection and we've always found the service friendly. A really nice place to visit!
Fee F — Google review
On a drive to St Andrews, we spotted the sign to CAMBO House and gardens and so glad we did! We ended up visiting twice!! Being disabled we managed to park right at the cafe and access to the gardens. This was fantastic. After some fabulous coffee and cake, we meandered slowly through the beautiful gardens. Full of woodland walks and a beach, this place was a haven for wildlife and gorgeous scenery. The golf course beside the house is very scenic too. Unfortunately, we didn't manage to see the house, only the back quarters but the estate is amazing. Well worth a visit. We will return again one day.

Well maintained gardens in a larger estate. Really enjoyed our visit and would love to go again to see more. Nice cafe on-site with outdoor seating for a sunny day visit. Plants, souvenirs, and produce for sale in the small shop. Highlight was the scented roses in the walled garden, beautiful!
Helen H — Google review
Best prairie style garden I've visited. A fantastic choice of plants, and lots flowering at the beginning of August. Surprising number of Austen roses in bloom - I enjoyed trying each one for their perfume.
Barbara M — Google review
Really enjoyed our visit to Cambo Gardens for a walk, browse of the shop, cake in the cafe and a walk down through the woods to the beach. The gardens are lovely a full of a mix of plants and trees. The colour was still very good and the mix of trees also provided some autumn flair. The cafe was busy but efficient and the staff were very friendly. Overall, it’s well worth a visit if you’re in the area.
David C — Google review
ANother visit here and this time we ate in the restaurant. The food is entirely vegetarian and although we are not vegetarian, we found choices that were excellent. Service was impeccable and prices were reasonable. This time the weather was beautiful and we also walked towards the beach but that can be a little tiring on ancient knees. You could probably spend a week here! Very diverse planting and lots of colour and texture. On a windy day, the swaying grasses were fascinating. Definitely a must-visit if you are in the area. A year later and it is still superb. The cafe serves only vegetarian food but what food! Mushroom pate was delicious, and both quiche and the ploughman's were excellent. Service was quick and efficient with lots of smiles and very good eye candy... We will be back again and again.

We've had an amazing experience at the Bar under the Golf Hotel. Tash is possibly one of the best bartenders I've met in my 10 years of world travels. Crail Harbour is a picturesque historical port located in the East Neuk of Fife, Scotland. It has been a hub for maritime trade with Scandinavia and northern Europe for centuries, leaving its mark on the town's European-styled architecture. The charming harbour is one of the most photographed places in Scotland and offers a tranquil and secluded atmosphere. Visitors can explore the moored yachts, trawlers, and lighthouse while walking along the harbour walls during low tide.
Beautiful little harbour village, definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area and it doesn’t cost anything just your time and you’ll be paid back threefold with the views that you’re fine.

Very scenic spot. Not much to do except enjoy the views and if you happen to be there at the right time you might get a delicious lobster roll from the shack. It’s not open weekdays and only a few hours on the weekend.

The most easterly of Fife’s East Neuk fishing villages. The harbour is small and there is no public parking at the harbour side. Easy parking a short away in the town. Public toilets and direct access to the Fife coastal path and excellent beach next to the harbour. Limited but good choice of cafes and restaurants.
A I — Google review
Charming little harbour backed by attractive houses, with a gallery and café just up the hill. Crail is the furthest east of all the villages along the East Neuk's south coast, and arguably the most attractive. The working fishing boats, unspoilt sandy beach and rugged cliffs give the harbour area real character. There's free parking in the village a few minutes walk from the harbour, and it's a great place to take a break if walking the Fife Coastal Path.

Staff were very friendly and menus are weighed down with painted rocks on the tables outside. It's a very cute little place!

Beautiful ciabatta with bacon and poached egg, beautiful location and view, nice tea and service. My huskies were very welcome and the fudge is delicious.

Located in the heart of Crail village, Crail Pottery is a charming working pottery housed in a beautifully restored building. Run by three generations, this family enterprise creates homely earthenware and elegant ceramics. Visitors can watch the pottery being made in the studio while browsing through a cozy shop that offers an array of stunning products including fridge magnets, postcards, mugs, plates, and coastal cottage keepsake ornaments.
Gorgeous pottery studio! Much bigger than I thought it would be! Very pleased with the mug I purchased and will definitely be returning

Beautiful little pottery in the heart of Crail. Loved the unique, handcrafted pieces – every bowl and mug felt like it had a story. Warm, welcoming staff and such a peaceful vibe inside. Picked up a bowl I absolutely adore!

What a place! A family business of 60 years, hand made and painted ceramics. Get something to take home to treasure for a life time! See our full video review on our experience under The Olive Tree Family on all social media platforms.

A lovely little shop tucked in the heart of Crail. Well signposted, with lots of amazing pieces, which I thought to be reasonably priced. The most fascinating bit for me however was reading the process of making the pottery, and watching the crafters in action.

I simply adore visiting Crail Pottery. On arrival you will see the potters at work, the main shop is up metal stairs, quite steep but my 88yo Mum on left in the photo can still manage the steps. So many beautiful collections of pottery to view and purchase. I'm collecting two different sets and purchase more pieces on each visit. Highly recommend visiting Crail Pottery.

Lovely pottery and incredibly kind owners. I hesitate to advertise the kindness that they recently provided, fearing it may set unrealistic expectations, but my goodness, I was completely gobsmacked by their astoundingly generous and humble customer service. Such kindness is truly a rarity and it brightened my entire day.

their pottery is expensive, but it's all handmade in Crail and a great reminder of this beautiful coastal town to take home with you.

Fantastic chippy, battered smoked haddock was superb batter was light and crispy, chips were crispy on the outside and fluffy inside.Different class from what I’m used to if there was a chippy in heaven I might have just died 👍

What usually brings me to Crail is the lobster shack. I have heard so many great reviews from Fife locals about the fish here so decided to finally give it a try. I have a couple go-to fish and chip shops so I am difficult to be swayed. Well, this one didn't disappoint and now is added to my chippy rotation! The area it's hard to find a "bad" one but this place definitely pars up with the big dogs. 💪 Maybeee even teetering towards the top because I am a sucker for small family run businesses. 😉 I may be wrong, but it seems like a wholesome, family working establishment. Efficient and friendly where everyone knows their role in the processing of your order. They have a couple tables to dine in if needed. They accept card but always best to pay cash if you can, it is better for businesses. *For those gluten-free, they offer it daily!* Now, the food. Just the perfect amount of salt was added. The haddock (2 pieces) had a nice golden color. Crisp with a good thickness. (See photo) Some places seem like they flatten the fish, butterfly etc. and too much batter. This was the perfect ratio. The chips were crunchy on the outside and still fluffy inside. Fresh peeled today, not bought in. Only downside is- the onion rings are frozen. I did ask beforehand and was given honesty. It is so hard to find a chippy that does fresh because it can be a nuisance. The onions are drippy, resulting in more batter falling off in the fryers. So I can understand why. Even the most famous chippy does frozen too. 🤷‍♀️ Superseded my expectations!!! 👏

Lovely like fish bar, take away or sitting in is an option. Arrived in crail late on Saturday night and they were open until 8pm. Very busy, wait was around 30-40 minutes however a we had a nice stroll around the harbour while we waited. Food was delicious.

Wow! Incredible fish supper. Best I’ve had in a long time. Yes there was a long wait, however, worth every second of waiting. Can’t beat a fresh, made to order chippy. Weather was nice so went for a stroll around the harbour to take in the fantastic views.

Was fancying fish and chips but on a solo trip with the dog so needed somewhere i could pop in and not queue for ages. Driving through Crail the parking space was free outside. Super friendly staff, relaxed and lovely place, would have sat in if i hadn’t had the dog. Food served freshly cooked, some of the best chips i’ve ever had and haddock was stunning, even though i’m usually used to cod being from Northumberland, i may be a convert. Can’t fault the place, and very reasonably priced too.

Hot, fresh, speedy, reasonably priced (compared to others in area). But best of all, very friendly, welcoming staff! 🤍 Preferred these by far, than one of the popular Anstruther fish bars, that took absolutely ages to serve, with smaller portions and slightly over done fish!. Well done guys! 🐟🍟

Great museum. Tells the interesting history of beautiful Crail. A great visit for amateur historians or seeking shelter on a wet afternoon, packed full of WWIi history and the community groups of the village. *****

Amazing museum full of surprising Crail history with interesting friendly staff. Only thing missing was a King Creosote section 😁

Crail Museum is a joy to visit. So much history within the walls of the Museum. The museum is ran by volunteers who just simply have a passion for all things Crail. The volunteers are full of such interesting stories of this lovely village and the villagers. If you are looking for your connection by family to Crail, the museum is the place to start your search. If you are looking for more information on the base, the museum can help you and if you just want to get to know Crail, the museum should be your first stop. The gift shop has a new look which is inviting. Nice for the villagers or visitors to but a special item for self or as a gift for someone special.

Free to enter lovely wee museum highlighting Crails Heritage from its beginnings to its links to the fishing industry, lifeboats, golf (find out the difference between a niblick and a mashie) and of course the famous airfield. On entering, we were greeted by a lovely lady who offered to explain where everything was and what to see. There is a small souvenir shop for those mementoes to take home.

Absolutely fascinating museum, especially the room featuring the history of the Joint Services School for Linguists, where many father was posted in the late 1950s. Friendly and knowledgeable staff.

The airfield section was good to see the went upstairs had a look and found a area dedicated to the Masons ,geez this is a relic of the past ,surely this is outdated with all the aprons sashes ect , and there are photos on the wall of the churches in crail but surprise, surprise, not one of the holy trinity church, for the RC community, why is this?

An excellent starting point for any visit to Crail, this small free museum has five rooms spread across two floors where you can learn about the history of Crail and its people. The displays are changed annually but usually include rooms devoted to Crail Airfield and to the history of the Royal Burgh of Crail, plus other special exhibitions on particular aspects of Crail - recent exhibitions have included the "Kingo Family of Weavers" and "Crail Shops". The museum also houses a small shop and tourist information point.

Crail Parish Church, with a history spanning over eight centuries, has been at the center of the community. The church is known for its picturesque setting and interesting history, including an incident where residents destroyed altars and holy images in response to a passionate sermon. Behind the church lies the Dead House, used in the 19th century to safeguard bodies from grave robbers. The church also hosts various community activities and events, making it welcoming to both long-term residents and newcomers.
Beautiful church in a well maintained graveyard with many ancient grave stones
Leslie M — Google review
Very pretty Church with the Dead House located behind it. The Dead House is where they locked the corpses so they would decompose a bit before they were buried thus deterring the grave robbers.

Wonderful concert, although the initial piano recital was outside my music choice; outstanding pianist with a concert grand Steinway. Audience loved it. Second half was Brahms sextet which was beautiful. Wine served during intermission, no hot drinks. Fascinating graveyard, well documented. Part of Fife music Festival. Wonderful area.
