Garden
Trelissick Garden is a picturesque estate located at the head of the Fal estuary in Cornwall. It features a grand 19th-century neo-Palladian house, surrounded by formal gardens filled with magnolias and hydrangeas, as well as expansive green fields and parkland with walking trails. The estate also includes an art gallery, bookshop, cafe, and riverside woodland walks.
A lovely afternoon spent at Trelissick, a National Trust house near Truro. A nice walk amongst the plants in the gardens. A welcome cup of tea each in the house dining room. There is a well stocked gift shop on site and a plant centre. The shop has the usual fare found in similar NT properties. There is also a cafe on site, an art and crafts gallery and a very good second-hand book shop. Highly recommend a visit here .
Les P — Google review
Lovely NT property. The house doesn’t have a lot inside, but they have made most of the ground floor into a tea room, which is really nice, as there are lots of tables and chairs to sit and admire the view from. We had a great woodland walk down to the estuary and beach too.
Andrea M — Google review
Beautiful gardens, great for anyone. Lovely walk and children enjoyed it too. Fantastic flowers, plants. Some interesting facts regarding butterflies that my daughters found interesting as well. Plenty of friendly staff help to create a beautiful atmosphere around the whole place. The overflow car park was in use and apparently the bigger car park planning is due to be decided upon by the powers that be soon. Days like today certainly prove the requirement!
Ryan P — Google review
Beautiful gardens and cafes. I’ve been several times and this place always surprises me. It’s good a great atmosphere and stunning views. It can get very busy so best to arrive early.
Kerry G — Google review
As national trust members we decided to visit Trelissick whilst visiting Cornwall and it is a beautiful place! There isn't too much to see in the house as most of the downstairs is part of the seating area for food and drink but it has some interesting rooms to see, the grounds are lovely and well kept but being as it is August we missed most of the hydrangea blooms but I can imagine it's a beautiful sight to see. The glass house was the highlight for me and we caught abit of rain so it sounded amazing to listen to in there and has plenty of plants and succulents to see. Would definitely recommend visiting for a nice little walk around.
Rob H — Google review
A beautiful garden but expensive, even as far as the national trust goes. Parking £6 for non-members even if you don’t want to enter the house and garden. If you want to enter the house and garden you should expect to pay a lot more. The house is small and used basically as a cafe. The gardens aren’t much more impressive than the rest of the site. Free entry to the expansive parkland, woods and coastal paths. Go to those rather than the gardens. I’ve been to much better national trust sites so I wouldn’t even recommend it to members who can gain free entry, unless you’re in the close vicinity. However, the exciting new addition with the restoration of the wall garden is something to look forward to in the next few years. Nice but expensive for non-members.
R. G — Google review
Fantastic gardens and house. Dog and family friendly. Extensive walks. Lovely layout. Staff are polite and helpful. The cafe food is good. The house you can tell is run down but what they havw redone is ok.
JemD H — Google review
Lovely place to visit, some areas not accessible for dogs which was a shame as we couldn't visit all parts. Staff really welcoming and friendly and some absolutely beautiful views

Point Quay is a charming destination that offers stunning views and wildlife, making it perfect for a leisurely walk or bike ride. The area is known for its beautiful scenery, but visitors should be prepared for windy conditions. While there are no local spots to grab a cup of tea, bringing a flask is recommended. It's also an ideal spot to launch a kayak, but timing is crucial due to the tides.
Absolutely beautiful when tides in. Perfect place to kayak. Very limited parking though
Sandra G — Google review
Wonderful, tranquil picnic area beside the road. Benches provided for people to enjoy the ambience and views up and down the creek. Very easy access.
Ewan B — Google review
Lovely spot just to sit and listen to Curlew, Redshank calling across the mud. Very secluded, with very narrow lanes but worth a little effort. Local pub if you are in need, but little else.
Mike K — Google review
Excellent crabbing spot! We caught 30+ in a very short time, ranging from very small to rather large! Chicken and bacon as bait. Not hugely busy; couple of other families including youngsters going for a swim in the estuary. Not always parking close by.
Thomas G — Google review
Beautiful place for a kayak and a cafe there and tennis courts a huge park lovely place 😀

Lovely viewing point, or good place to launch a kayak. Very tidal, so need to be within 2 hours if high tide to easily launch/land on the slipway.
Chris S — Google review
Nice place to visit, either cycling or walking It can get a little windy, so it's best to dress accordingly! Lovely views and wildlife, beautiful scenery The only thing that was a disappointment in the area was that there was nowhere local to get a cup of tea Bring a flask!

Ferry service
Transportation
Ferries
The King Harry Ferry service provides a convenient and fast way to get around the harbour in Falmouth. The ferry costs 7 one-way or 10 return tickets, and there are toilets on board. It's easy to use, with payment taken on board, and it's a great way to explore the harbour without spending too much money.
Excellent little ferry service with very friendly staff. Current price (July 2025) is £11 for a day return. Not bad for the time and distance that you save - it is 20 miles to drive around through Truro. The Philleigh Landing is right in the Roseland Peninsular and it is only a few miles to either the charming St Just in Roseland Church or the picturesque St Mawes. It is a short crossing, three departures an hour from each side.
Roy S — Google review
A joy to use, friendly operators and we only experienced a short wait either side. Some people got a little confused with the road markings but I’m not sure how much clearer things could be made. Personally I think it’s a little bit expensive but then perhaps the running costs dictate this, who knows, but I think we paid £11 for a return ticket.
Gareth T — Google review
It's a ferry. You queue, you drive on and drive off after crossing the river/bay. £7.50 for a car or van one way. 3 crossings each way per hour. Pleasant enough.
Stephen S — Google review
Great way to cross from the Roseland peninsula when visiting Truro- saves around 27 miles of driving. Good value at £11 return for a car, & the crew are friendly & efficient.
Julia H — Google review
The roads both sides of the ferry are wide enough for 2 cars to pass, a bit of a squeeze for transit vans, very quick only waited 5 or 10 mins for the ferry. It also saves an hour or more of travelling around. Though at £11 return it may be a bit pricey but for the tourist as a one off I didn’t mind paying that at all.
Kelly D — Google review
A really lovely service that shaves a lot off your drive as well as being a lovely addition for a family day out and watching it move across the water. Thank you!
Emily P — Google review
If your holidaying in Cornwall you must include the king Harry ferry on one of your days out it's just great
John C — Google review
Great little trip for getting across to the Roseland Peninsula, £11 day return, last ferry is 10pm and saves having to drive via Truro which in the summer can take an age. The crew are always happy despite having to deal with us tourists

St Mawes Castle, a 16th-century artillery fortress, is one of the best-preserved coastal fortresses from Henry VIII's era. It was built to defend against potential invasions from Catholic France and Spain and is adorned with intricate carvings and Latin inscriptions praising the kings. Situated opposite Pendennis Castle, it overlooks the River Fal estuary and offers scenic views of the bay.
There is extra parking at the castle, but not marked up. There is what looks like a slip road that has a steep decline, but if you take that one left of the main car park there is lots of space. Castle is very interesting. Well worth a visit.

Have never been to the castle before, it's definitely worth a visit if you are around st mawes. There are good parking facilities for everyone, toilets and a gift shop. Some beautiful visit across to Falmouth as well. If you love history this is a must

We hopped on the ferry from Falmouth to St Mawes to visit the castle. Built by Henry 8th, this "modern" castle has stunning views over the estuary. Our little explorer loved the connect four game and the amazing views. Lots of information boards and fascinating facts about the history of the castle and the area.

Took the ferry from Falmouth for a short day trip. Although a little on the small side, the castle is in excellent condition and has lots of areas to explore. There are also some excellent views of the bay. Recommend a visit.

Great place to visit If your into your History of Henry Viii who built this castle its a 3 tier narrow steps going up.. Loads of space to seat and look across at Falmouth Harbour .Where you catch the ferry .or drive into St Mawes village.

St Mawes Castle, located near Falmouth in Cornwall, is one of the best-preserved coastal artillery fortresses from the Tudor period. Constructed between 1540 and 1542 during King Henry VIII’s reign, it was designed to defend the Carrick Roads waterway at the mouth of the River Fal against potential invasions from France and the Holy Roman Empire. The castle features a distinctive cloverleaf design, comprising a central four-story tower surrounded by three circular bastions. This layout provided extensive platforms for heavy artillery, allowing comprehensive coverage of the surrounding waters. Notably, St Mawes Castle is adorned with elaborate carvings and inscriptions praising Henry VIII, reflecting its historical significance and the era’s architectural style. For visitors interested in exploring this historic site, St Mawes Castle is open daily from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Booking tickets online in advance can provide a 15% discount on admission prices. It’s important to note that the last admission is 30 minutes before closing time. The castle’s address is Castle Drive, St Mawes, Nr Truro, Cornwall, TR2 5DE. For the most current information on opening times and ticket prices, it’s advisable to consult the official English Heritage website. There is also a ferry nearby if you’re the other side of the English channel which is very reasonable priced

Pub
Nestled in the serene woodlands, The Punchbowl and Ladle is a charming thatched-roof pub with parts dating back to the 15th century. This traditional country inn offers a classic pub menu and welcomes dogs, making it an ideal stop after exploring Trelissick or during winter for a cozy retreat. Renovated and extended, it's advisable to book in advance due to its popularity.
First time we’ve tried this pub, it was amazing, the food, the atmosphere, the staff, just perfect. A great selection of locally sourced food and a great specials selection. We had a booking for 5 o’clock, so glad we did, it gets busy but you can see why, really really enjoyed it. We had the dog with us, they put you in a lovely seat, like a little booth. I would highly recommend this St Austell brewery owned pub to anyone.

Absolutely amazing! Never heard of the place but was the closest place to eat near the beach we were at. We were so impressed by everything, from the car park, to the service and speed/efficiency! I asked for a medium rare steak and they delivered the best steak I have had in a long time! My partner had the Thai red curry which he thought was amazing also! Well priced and you definitely get your moneys worth as the portions are really decent sizes! Lovely little outdoors area and we noticed a pool table on the way in too! We had a great experience and will quite happily make the 40 minute drive to come here again :)

Came with a group of friends on a Sunday evening and they were out of roasts so we had fish and chips. The best I've ever had! Lovely place with something to please everyone.

Popped in for a late lunch on our way back from down west and wasn’t disappointed. The venue is quite large but the staff friendly and welcoming It’s true it’s a St Austell Brewery pub so not too many surprises on the menu, however today they had a fixed price 2 or 3 course menu and they were excellent! Not the usual brewery fare at all, very tasty and well priced Would recommend and will be back

First time visit and not the last one. Enjoyed everything from the minute we walked in. We come to Cornwall every year. Been 2 many places already and this one will become one of our favourits. Been looked after by Jill, thanx 4 looking after us. Keep up the good work. 😃👍

Great find in Truro! Servers were all polite and friendly, place itself clean and cosy. Music choices a bit random, volume the right touch so as not to make it difficult for a pleasant conversation. We didn't have long to wait for the food, and the specific instructions were all met! St. Austell burger was above average, with a tasty bun that was just the perfect choice for the rather thick patty. That patty was something else! As we understand it, the meat, as with everything else, is sourced local. The vegan burger, called Symplicity was also scrumptious. Nachos was okay. Massive thanks to the courteous servers who went above and beyond!

The Brie, cranberry, and kale tart was absolutely delicious! As a vegetarian, it’s rare to find a roast option that’s both satisfying and flavourful—but this one hit the mark. It was so tasty, I’m still thinking about it!

Absolutely fantastic meal at The Punchbowl and Ladle! I had the Abraham burger, which was cooked to perfection—juicy, flavourful, and stacked just right (So good I didn’t get a chance to take a photo). Finished off with a rich, gooey chocolate brownie that was pure heaven. The service was friendly, attentive, and made the whole experience even better. Highly recommend if you’re in the area—great food, great vibe, and genuinely lovely staff. A special shoutout to our waitress, Zelie, who was absolutely brilliant—warm, attentive, and made us feel so welcome from start to finish.

Fish and seafood restaurant
The Shack is a charming shellfish bar located in Falmouth, offering a casual dining experience with rustic wooden seats and a menu featuring local seafood. Overlooking the harbor, it is the sister restaurant of The Shed. The restaurant prides itself on serving fresh fish from Newlyn and oysters from Porthilly, as well as an excellent sharing platter for those who can't decide.
What a treat! We came to the Shack for our 7th wedding anniversary and had the best time. The fish was excellent...squid, scallops, prawns, oysters, crabs, muscles...all were amazing. A lovely atmosphere with welcoming, friendly staff. Reasonably priced considering the quality of the food. You have to book, we watched so many people being turned away. Thank you for a great experience. We highly recommend a visit :)

An absolutely brilliant experience! My partner and I had the oyster, dressed crab with salad and aioli sauce, and the haddock and chips which were absolutely delicious. You could tell the ingredients were freshly prepared and the dishes were full of flavour. The atmosphere was lovely and the staff were very friendly. Good value for money. Would come back again and recommend it to anyone visiting the area.
Myrice P — Google review
We just went to the Shack last night for our 10th wedding anniversary. We were overwhelmed by the exceptional service the gentleman provided. They made our 10th anniversary especially memorable. We tried to say thanks again before we left but the gentleman was too busy back by the kitchen and we were rushing for a movie. My husband's steak was cooked to perfection. The amount of my seafood starter and main were so generous! I was so full. I loved their homemade seafood dip which was so tasty. I personally would love more flavour with the mussels and the whole crab. But they were still very nice. I'll definitely try the seafood platter for 2/3 to share when we bring our girls next time because my husband doesn't eat seafood! Anyway, thanks so much for being a highlight of our 10th anniversary! 💕

Excellent service and stunning seafood!! Our waiter Max was brilliantly resourceful. Booking ahead is a must. After trying to eat here on our first wander around Falmouth and to find it fully booked, we went online and found a table at lunch time a few days later. Result! Super glad we went as the food was stunning. My friends had the crab sandwich and I had the dressed Cornish crab - freshly caught that morning. I had no idea dressed crab could taste that good. It was perfect! Being a little hungover we asked if they served Bloody Mary's and thankfully Max our waiter had a winning recipe at hand. It was definitely one of the best, perfectly spiced Bloody Mary's I've ever had - and I've had a lot. So that was a brilliant cherry at the top of an already excellent cake for our experience at The Shack. If you're looking to eat fresh seafood and have excellent service that goes above and beyond - look no further.

What a friendly and inviting place. Always book but when you get in here, spend the money and get the recommendations! The staff know what they're talking about. Absolutely fabulous! Friendly service, laid back atmosphere and most importantly delicious food. We were really blown away by the exceptional quality and taste of the food and will definitely be returning. A real gem!

Our first meal in Cornwall and certainly one of the most memorable, service was amazing and the staff were so accommodating, we sat outside since it was a full house inside but asked to move tables closer to the entrance of the restaurant where it was a bit warmer and they gave us blankets too. We ordered the seafood platter for 3 and an extra side of calamari and was concerned it wasn’t going to be enough but we were oh so wrong - this magnificent spread of seafood could feed 4 easily as we couldn’t even finish it and had to take some home. Everything was just so delicious, especially the scallops and mussels in white wine sauce and the huge crab which was briny and meaty. You definitely get your moneys worth coming here, and will leave happily stuffed! We will visit again when we come back to Cornwall!
