Bodmin Jail is a chilling and atmospheric museum located in Cornwall, UK. Built in the 18th century, it was one of the first prisons to have individual cells and has a history of housing notorious criminals. Visitors can explore the jail at their own pace or join a guided tour to learn about its dark past from knowledgeable guides. The site offers insight into Georgian and Victorian crime and punishment, with real-life stories of scandalous events and daring escapes.
Bodmin Jail is a brilliant attraction – really well presented, atmospheric, and full of history. The courtyard is lovely for a drink afterwards too. The only let-down was the final attraction: it’s built up as if you’ll see a hanging, but in reality it’s just a tiny platform drop and nothing much else, which felt a bit flat after all the build-up. Aside from that, we thoroughly enjoyed it and would definitely recommend a visit.
Rhys H — Google review
Our visit to Bodmin Jail was absolutely unforgettable. It was a perfect blend of history, innovation, and atmosphere. It’s amazing to see how this historic site has been transformed thanks to the hotel chain’s £65 million regeneration project. The attention to detail is remarkable. You can now stay in the hotel and sleep in original cells.. I didn't experience this. The highlight for us was the 4D experience, which brought the stories of the prisoners and the history of the jail to life in such a powerful and engaging way. It was dramatic, emotional, and well produced. You could feel the history all around you, yet it was presented with modern creativity and flair. A special mention has to go to Jasmin, our tour guide, who was absolutely fabulous. Her storytelling was captivating from start to finish. She was knowledgeable, passionate, and full of energy. She made the whole experience come alive with humour, sensitivity, and fascinating insights. She spoke for nearly 2 hours. Whether you’re interested in history, architecture, or just looking for a unique day out, Bodmin Jail is a must-visit. It’s a shining example of how heritage can be preserved and reimagined. I highly recommend the guided tour.
Wendy P — Google review
Had a brilliant time very educational and eerily Intriguing , the 4D was amazing ! scaring place. I will be completely I’m not sure what people are expecting from this attraction. I’ve read some of the other reviews where a guy was complaining about the last part of the attraction where there was a 4D projection of a hanging and then you go through to view the last UK hanging pit. I’m not sure what he was expecting. Maybe he was thinking he was going to see an actual hanging. Some people are beyond help. To be completely honest it really isn’t the place for young children. I did see a few people walking around with young children and I actually ended up feeling quiet bothered by there lack of awareness. If you don’t have a problem with exposing your children to details of murders, executions, Ouija boards, Pictures of dead people and other such artefacts, then feel free to bring them but I wouldn’t be taking my children to a place like that, Stick to the Eden Project or the beach. It was very scary in places, but darker educational for adults, not the place for small children
Dionne S — Google review
Jasmin was an excellent tour guide for the almost three hour tour taking in the dark walk and museum. She was incredibly knowledgeable and knew answers to all the group’s questions. The tour was excellent and would thoroughly recommend it. Fascinating and gruesome .
Kathryn T — Google review
Took my fiance there to celebrate her birthday with her best friend and husband the four of us had a two hour guided tour of the jail. Its the way to go. Well done too josh, who had only been doing the job for two months. Booked in advance.
Glyn C — Google review
Bodmin jail is a really good experience. Me and my partner spent the morning here and had a great time. The dark walk is very atmospheric and brings the history and the stories of the jail to life. The rest of the jail, which is a very well put together museum, is an interesting and insightful journey into the history of Bodmin Jail and the part it played in Cornish history. I highly recommend this attraction. Me and my partner were both blown away by how good it was. And it's suitable for the entire family.
James P — Google review
Had a fantastic day. Went with a 11 and 12 year old and they loved it . Staff are friendly and welcoming. Would definitely recommend for older kids.

Outstanding! Thank you!! We visited on a home-ed guided tour today and were NOT disappointed. Jess is a fantastic (hi)story teller and was really engaging with the kids, they LOVED it. Would very much recommend a visit.

Pub
Restaurant
Located in Torquay, the Hole In The Wall is the oldest inn in town, dating back to 1540. Situated on a quiet side street off the Strand, this historic pub was once a debtors prison and got its name from how food was passed to prisoners through a hole in the wall. The pub offers a wide range of drinks and serves homemade pub classics.
Oasis for ales and conviviality. Friendly regulars welcome strangers. The blonde barkeeps have sunny dispositions. Fascinating memorabilia fill the walls and ceiling. Nice beer garden attached. Pleasantly dark inside so allow for your eyes to adjust if coming in from the sun!
Julio G — Google review
So we came here for food after Google and trip advisor both recommended, don’t think they got the memo about food no longer being served! Regardless we stayed for 2 rounds and it was the most fascinating place we’ve been to! There’s a taxidermy lion in the back garden, we’ve never come across one in our lives so this was a surprise! It’s a beautiful place with lots of fascinating and quirky things all around, the toilets were very clean and there are lots of drinks to chose from. The red haired lady who served us was just fantastic, we never caught her name but she was just brilliant, really friendly and welcoming! We’re local and we can’t wait to come back!
Liz B — Google review
What an aptly named pub, at first glance there is no obvious pub! But just look round the car park and you will see the entrance. Once inside the lovely pub I was pleased to see the fabulous array of real ales. Following expert advice and the offer of tasters from the friendly server 😁 I had the best beer I can ever recall finding whist touring Cornwall. Well worth visiting if you are near Bodmin. Worth 6 stars!
Chris A — Google review
Great proper pub! Bags of atmosphere and great real ales.
Alexander D — Google review
Fantastic little pub with lots of old memorabilia hanging of the rafters. We had a fabulous welcome from the landlord who was very welcoming and friendly gave us some advice of where to eat and we came back for drinks as it was such a lovely atmosphere.
Chris H — Google review
This bar does NOT do food even though it advertises it, the landlord was very ignorant and unprofessional. The woman behind the bar was also rude, we as a family will not return.
Johnny W — Google review
What a fabulous pub housed in the original Bodmin debtors prison. Lovely landlady that gave well informed advice when asked about the ales. Definitely worth a visit if in the town.
Andrea A — Google review
Lovely quirky dog friendly pub. When we walked in we were made very welcome by the Landlord and his staff. It has a great friendly atmosphere. There is a good selection of real ales. The Landlord is very knowledgeable about his ales and keeps a decent pint. I went for Jail Ale. We will be back next time we are in Bodmin. If you're ever in Bodmin and like real ales and a friendly atmosphere then the Hole in The Wall is the place to be

I can't begin to think of how many times I've driven past this nursery, but yet I'd never been in... Until today! Wow, I'm so impressed. All plants look super healthy, and it is really well laid out! There is so much to see, and we are already planning to return! The cafe was busy, and we now understand why! The food was delicious and the staff were fantastic. Thankyou to everyone who works hard to make this nursery a success!
Leanne R — Google review
We were on a motorbike trip around Cornwall and dropped in purely by chance for shelter and refreshments... On a very wet Cornish day the staff gave us a warm welcome. One young lady (who loved bikes!), took our wet bike gear and dried it out for us. Really appreciated it. What great staff there. Highly recommend such a friendly place. Thank you very much. 🏍️🏍️
Dave H — Google review
Such a great place! My first time here, was given loads of good advice by the nursery staff on my flowers I picked out. Such an extensive collection! Lovely place to visit and the cafe staff were all wonderful. We got there, just as they were closing but they still made us a quick drink, it was highly appreciated. Cafe staff are stars 🩷
Spooky B — Google review
A wonderful nursery. It is much larger than it looks with a huge range of plants. Staff are helpfull with good advice about what type of plant will be best for your soil and position. The cafe is outstanding. I had 2 beautiful scones and my wife had a toasted sandwich. Both were excellent. Well worth a visit
Paul C — Google review
Traveled here for the cafe, so only walked through the nursery, but what I saw of the nursery was great. The food was really good and the service was quick. Good selection of food and drink. Came quickly and was hot. Highly recommend a visit.

Great cafe. Good food at very reasonable prices. Staff friendly and helpful Good range of plants and gardeners needs.

Wow, what a find! A proper nursery with an abundance of plants to choose from. All well cared for and excellent value. After a wander around their extensive grounds, we popped into The Mill Cafe and enjoyed an afternoon tea. We will certainly be returning!

Chinese takeaway
Chinese restaurant
Wong's, located at 2A Crockwell Street in Bodmin, is a Chinese takeaway that offers a variety of delicious vegan options. Their vegetable dishes are highly recommended and the staff can provide guidance if you inquire about their vegan offerings. Many customers have praised Wong's for their use of fresh and flavorful ingredients, as well as their efficient service. They offer speedy delivery with polite drivers. The prawn dish in particular has received rave reviews and is highly recommended by patrons.
Been coming here for some time now. It’s my partners and I once a week treat after a look week at work (we have Mondays and Tuesdays off so it’s our weekend) Shorna is amazing and always so friendly. Food is always spot on and fresh. Wouldn’t go anywhere else now.
Daniel P — Google review
Don't be put off by the appearance (it does look like Pawn shop with plastic screens and cash only) Food was tasty, clean and well presented. Whilst waiting for our order there must have been 7 orders come through on the phone or being collected, this many people can't be wrong
Dave P — Google review
We ordered Singapore noodles and fried rice and asked for extra spicy, both were delicious and I will definitely going back when I visit Cornwall again.
Mat H — Google review
Had a takeaway delivered on 05-6-23 Ordered a mixed starter that was burnt and dry it was ribs, chicken & prawn toast, the spring roll was ok but oily. Next came what was meant to crispy aromatic duck, which was soggy, smelt horrible & didn’t taste much better, so left it after 1 pancake. The mains a crispy chili beef & beef chow mein tasted horrible & was covered in jelled substance, didn’t look very appetizing, left these after a mouthful! After using them since moving to Cornwall in 2017, don’t think I’ll be returning. So disappointed
Dean B — Google review
Normally the food is really good, however today whilst eating my chow mein, I noticed a piece of metal in my food, I simply took it aside (mistakes happen) although, when I. continued eating I spotted a bug in my food as well, this made me feel quite sick. I recommend the sweet and sour chicken, you usually don't find bugs in it.
Laura — Google review
CHASH ONLY. But why after all these years is it still cash only. Large and very good menu, excelent quality. They also deliver. Phone order in advance, ready in 20 min.
Selwyn M — Google review
Visited Cornwall from London and stayed in Bodmin. Unfriendly staff and food is not authentic or even comparable to Chinese. I had an extremely upset stomach after eating the food, it was terrifying. If I could give 0 stars I would. AVOID if you don’t want to be stuck on the toilet at 3am!!

Pub
The Masons Arms is a fantastic little pub that offers wonderful food and has reasonable prices. They have a diverse menu to choose from, including an excellent Sunday lunch. The atmosphere in the front bar is friendly, and there is plenty of seating at the rear of the pub for dining. Additionally, they have a lovely decked area with beautiful views of Bodmin Jail. This venue caters to sports lovers with multiple screens available.
A lovely little place in Bodmin. Parking right outside which was a big plus. Then inside a great choice of beers on draught. But saw The General at 8.4% ABV was a must try. A fantastic drink not so easy to find on draught. We then ordered a nut roast and a triple meat roast which came in a well reasonable time. The roasts certainly delivered. In my long life I have had many great roasts over the years and these were right up there. Fantastic choice of vegetables and huge Yorkie. The toasties as well as meat were spot on. Wife loved the Veggie nut roast as well. Everything was Great from start to finish including the service as well. Great staff. Dogs allowed as well which is always great please see the pictures of my dog who was sad we didn't share. 5/5 l way through. Chef should be well proud.
Paul T — Google review
Really nice pub with a tasteful mix of Ye Olde and modern decor. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. I visited for a Sunday roast. Sadly, they'd run out of pork, but the beef was a generous portion and good quality. Could have done with slightly more veg and roasties, but I still left there full. Will definitely return 👍🏼
Cwispi C — Google review
The food was very good and the service was impeccable. The only downside was that, being a Friday night, the atmosphere was quite loud with more people drinking than dining in the restaurant area. Because of this we decided not to stay for dessert and left after our meal. Overall, excellent food and staff, just a bit noisy for a relaxed dinner
Lizanne K — Google review
I visited the masons arms twice while staying locally, Initially out of curiosity as the photos give a different impression of it than you get driving past! It's actually got a really nice beer garden and the inside of the pub is really nice too, Staff are friendly, Great selection of drinks, I returned for food and was pleased I did as it was really nice! Deffinatly worth a visit and not far off the end of the Camel Trail.
A B — Google review
The atmosphere was quiet and calm. The service was great, my brother asked for a lot and they did it without questioning. The food was absolutely amazing, it had the right amount of everything. Came last night about 6 and would definitely come again!
Riley D — Google review
Fantastic place for a Sunday lunch..food was amazing. Venue was incredibly clean and tasteful. Staff were very polite and efficient, amazing value for money...the only downside was definitely not enough veg... especially green veg..... cauliflower cheese was awesome.
Lisa P — Google review
Staff were nice but the Doombar I was served had gone off, and although they gave me another drink they didn’t seem all that surprised or apologetic. Ordered a pizza as I read a review saying they were good; they were not. They had used tomato puree as the tomato sauce instead of passata, which was just too overpowering with the rest of the flavours. Also the pepperoni was low-quality and the pizza was undercooked.
Elliot S — Google review
We popped into the Mason Arms while we visited Bodmin Jail, lovely little pub service was swift and the lady who served us was lovely polite and welcoming. The food was all Perfect quickly made and fresh.

Indian restaurant
If you're on the lookout for a delightful dining experience in Bodmin, look no further than Viraj. This informal and contemporary curry house has been serving up classic Indian dishes since 1998, earning a stellar reputation for its friendly and hardworking staff who are dedicated to ensuring your visit is enjoyable. The atmosphere is relaxed, allowing you to take your time with the menu without feeling rushed.
Well, what can I say? Due to my work I travel the country and I’ve eaten in a lot of Indian restaurants and none of them have been worthy of a review from me until now. I would just like to say absolutely amazing food great portions great tasting good value for money if you’re in the area, please do not hesitate to pop down to see these guys you will definitely be looked after.
David E — Google review
I knew this would be a great establishment the moment my food was handed to me by a guy with a beaming smile, and noticed the poppadoms presented in a neat shop-branded paper bag. We got to our Airbnb and cracked open a vegetable pathia- vindaloo hot and packed full of veggies, a chunky and flavoursome paneer shashlik, fluffy and perfectly crisp garlic naan and the most incredible garlic rice we’ve ever tried. Portions so plentiful we’ve even got some left for tomorrow. What a great find in Bodmin.

Amazing food and excellent service from staff!!!! Would recommend and happily eat there again.

Bad service - Mix grill came with uncooked lamb and when asked them to why is uncooked and reply was it happens some time with lamb no apologies or offer to change to new mix grill. When made complaint to manager and he showed attitude. Never will go back to this restaurant and I have video and pictures of food will forward to food safety inspection team.

I visited this by place with my mate when we were down in Bodmin and in search of the Bodmin beast and needed some break. It is in the Main Street and there is off street parking but we parked in the street as we weren’t aware of the off street parking issues The Indian restaurant is quite unique in the sense it is not just Indian food they do, they also do steak. The ambiance of the place is very nice, the staff are very welcoming and the place is quite large with many seatings available Like I said the menu is very varied and I suppose as this is Cornwall it is trying to appeal to everyone We ordered starters and main my mate went for the steak with chips and I stuck to Indian food Any Indian restaurant outside London will always be different and people who are used to London ‘Indian’ restaurants, this is a step down in spicy etc. again it is Cornwall and this is taken into account The food was delicious and was well cooked the steak o am told was spot on and cooked to perfection The service from the staff was very good, they were attentive and for the order right with no issues The prices are slightly on the expensive side, but going by the location and comparing other restaurants in the vicinity it is economical So good prices, delicious food (not that spicy , so if you are someone who likes spicy food this may be a disappointment) ample parking and is a good place to chill
Sonny C — Google review
Couldn't fault the food, I was happy with my plain curry, but looked at others' meals and wish I had ordered theirs, so many nice choices. Next time ! 🙂 The decor is perfect and service good too.
Jim O — Google review
It was ok. The food was just about adequate but there's room for a great deal of improvement. The ingredients are pretty cheap and the meals are pretty expensive. We won't be back and not only due to the fact that we live in Sussex.

A very enjoyable curry. The staff were very attentive and funny. The onion bhaji was perfectly crispy, not greasy and had clear onion inside. The following curry dishes were well cooked, not too spicy and very well portioned.
