Eyam in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Eyam, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Eyam is best known as the “plague village,” where residents famously quarantined themselves in 1665–66 to stop the spread of disease, and you can explore this story at the Eyam Museum, parish church, and marked plague cottages. Set in the Peak District’s Hope Valley, it offers easy access to scenic walking routes, limestone hills, and nearby gritstone edges. The village itself has traditional stone buildings, tearooms, and a peaceful atmosphere that contrasts with its dramatic history. Annual events such as well dressing and commemorations of the plague years add further cultural interest for visitors.
With favorites like Eyam Parish Church (St Lawrence's Church), Eyam Museum, and Village Green Cafe, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like The Coolstone at Eyam Hall - Bar & Bistro and Village Green Cafe so you can get the best taste of Eyam while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Eyam Museum, located just outside the village center and run by the villagers themselves, offers a comprehensive look at the history of Eyam. The museum showcases a variety of artifacts including clay tobacco pipes from local lead miners, historical postcards, legal documents, and displays related to the bubonic plague outbreak that engulfed the village. Visitors can learn about remedies used to counter the plague and its dreadful symptoms.
A great little museum to start our day off in Eyam. £5 for an adult ticket. £1 for a map of Eyam which was great for our then 8 mile walk! The volunteers were very attentive and informative. Gift shop was fab.. purchased some local honey!!

Interesting village not far from Buxton where the villagers self isolated to prevent the plague from spreading to other villages. Specifically the museum is excellent along with the church that has 120,000 visitors a year. Lunch at the miner's arms is recommended with locally brewed beers.
Steven W — Google review
We have wanted to visit Eyam for a long time, and being close to the car park we started at the museum. We were very glad we did because there was a guided tour arranged for a small extra charge. The guide (Chris ) was very knowledgeable and filled the walk with stories and facts, and made the walk through the village very interesting. Recommended if you are in the area and they happen to be doing the tours. The museum was small but packed with information about the plague and how it affected the village and people who lived there. The staff were friendly. Recommended.

Really good experience. Had kids activities. Free parking available and also located near a children's play ground with a BMX pump track.

This was a wonderful hidden gem. Weather was too hot for our planned walk and this place was air conditioned. But inside was a superb display on the history of plague around the world and the story of the 1665 plague in Eyam. Good activities provided for children. 2 well produced videos to watch. We spent a good hour in there without getting bored. Highly recommended, one of the best small museums I've visited.
Bryony T — Google review
Its really good, tells the story of the Plague and how the people of Eyam took drastic steps to halt the spread of the Bubonic Plague better known as The Black Death.
Brian H — Google review
Absolutely fabulous museum. Very professionally presented, not all what I was expecting! Cheap entrance fee and lovely staff too. Be nice to have a cafe here. The village shop was closed so there was nowhere to buy any water etc from. Pretty village well worth a visit.

Eyam Hall is a captivating 17th-century manor house steeped in history, built shortly after the devastating Black Death in 1672. This stunning Jacobean-style residence has been cherished by the Wright family for over nine generations and serves as both a family home and an enchanting wedding venue. Visitors can explore its rich heritage through guided tours available during select dates in April and October.
The Hall itself is open to the public on selected days and membership of Historic Houses gets you free entry. It's a delightful place, full of fascinating stories, which you can read by scanning a QR code on your smartphone. We travelled a long way to visit, wondering if it would be worth the journey... well it definitely was! Would 100% recommend.

Great stately home but only open on selected dates through the year. Volunteers were excellent, there is an audio guide or you can read along on your phone. Beautifully looked after a d a fascinating history . There is also a courtyard with craft shop, book shop and cafe. There is a car park opposite the hall and don't forget to look at the plague houses and church to see the villages history

History of Eyam through the years. Very interesting. Just outside are the cottages where people died from the plague which was brought there by a linen merchant very interesting read at each cottage.

Really liked this lovely family home (have seen it under the management of the National Trust I think it's under the management of the family now but still open for visits). Very interesting to hear about the history of the family. The guides were very friendly, knowledgeable and welcoming. I really liked the rocking horse and the pictures of the family tree. The garden is very nice here (great bug hotel). Really nice cheese shop here. Would recommend a visit.

Beautiful area and lnteresting to read about the plague almost gives you chills . Lovely coffee shops around .

An interesting old house with lots of history in the middle of the Eyam plague village. Plenty of information around the house telling of its past and former family owners. There are friendly tour guides in different rooms describing life in the house. The gardens are nice to walk through with benches to sit and enjoy the view.

A very nice, clean and calm place to visit and explore the village. It is good for family, friends and solo visitors. There are two free of charge parking spaces and one private with charge.

Cucklet Church

Historical landmark
Cucklet Church, also known as Eyam Delf, is a significant historical site in Eyam. During the Black Death, services were held here when Eyam church closed to prevent the spread of the disease. The rock formation may not be large but it's easily accessible and worth a visit. It's marked with a public footpath sign and free to visit. Nearby parking is available at New Close in Eyam.
The Cucklet church rock formation isn't large but it's so easy to get to that it's worth a visit and is signposted with a public footpath sign. Free to visit. We had fun taking a few photos here. The nearest car park is a short walk in New Close, Eyam. If you are visiting Eyam, the plague village then I'd suggest combining it with a trip to the museum.
Mark F — Google review
Fascinating site at the edge of Eyam village, combining striking limestone geology with 17th century history. This impressive natural rock arch stands in a prominent location less than 15 minutes from the centre of the village. This position meant the site saw use as a church in the plague years of 1665 and 1666. It allowed Reverend William Mompesson to preach and be heard while maintaining a distance from the villagers. Today, it's an atmospheric spot worth the short walk from the village, the limestone arch and small caves partially hidden by greenery. Most of the walk is on surfaced paths, but take care when descending the grassy slope at the end, as it's fairly steep and slippery when wet.
Andrew T — Google review
Nice to see where the church services were held during the plague and where apparently Emmott Sydall was buried.
Paula I — Google review
Nice walk. Pretty scenery. Fresh blackberries along the path for picking.
Mike A — Google review
Only took 10 minutes walk from centre of Eyam village. The lime stones on ground may be slippy. Continue footpath down hill, you can reach A623 road. But some parts of the footpath are blocked by fallen trees
WaiTak C — Google review
I didn't even know this place existed until I read about it on a website, it's a bit out of the way and can be difficult to find if you don't know where to go but is definitely worth a look, kids will love exploring the caves underneath the knoll.

Eyam Parish Church, also known as St Lawrence's Church, is a 13th-century church with remarkable features both inside and out. The church houses striking stained glass windows depicting the Parable of the Widows Mite and commemorating Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee. Visitors can admire a 17th-century organ case and intricately carved choir stalls, including one adorned with a pelican symbolizing Christ's sacrifice.
Great local church dated back 13 century. Well maintained and fabulous stained glass. Some really old wall painting and original features. It’s well worth it a visit if you are in Eyam. Parking on street free during the week and car park near the entrance of the village. Free to take photos and donation are welcome. We had a nice visit here.
E ( — Google review
A lovely church, connected closely to the history of the village and the outbreak of the plague in the 1660s. There are examples of wall paintings, which were quite common centuries ago but have often been painted over. There is an illuminated copy of the death registers for the plague and some nice windows. Outside there is a good example of an 8th century cross and a nice sundial. The graveyard is worth a wander around if that is your 'thing'.
Elaine W — Google review
Attractive historic church dating largely from the 14th century, with a 17th century tower. The churchyard contains a Celtic cross dating back to the 8th century, in an unusually good state of preservation. The church is an important part of the story of the Eyam plague which devastated the village, and to commemorate the 200th year after the plague in 1866, it received significant alterations and upgrades. The churchyard is well maintained and is the final resting place of a number of plague victims. Inside, the church features unusually well preserved wall paintings, Saxon and Norman fonts and displays covering the history of the village and the impact of the plague. A particularly thought provoking church, and one that's well worth a visit while in the area.
Andrew T — Google review
A church with a lot of history attached about the Black Death. The church has some wonderful stained glass windows and wall paintings
Robert H — Google review
Lovely peaceful church with so many reminders of a tragic period in its history. The list of the villagers who died during the plague brings home the scale of the suffering.
Reg — Google review
An historic village with an incredible story. Well worth a visit, but beware the museum is shut on Mondays

Very interesting historical church. The area is known for how it keeped the plague from spreading. The village is so beautiful.

Fairly small private garden with sculptures by various artists for sale dispersed around. The host provides a map of the pieces with prices. Some interesting work.

The artwork is good but it was very confusing to find and no one greeted us so it felt like we were walking around someone's little garden. A very strange experience. It also felt over priced compared to other small gardens recently visited. I hope this one continues to grow, it could be amazing one day.

The Miners Arms in Eyam is a traditional pub nestled in the historic village of Eyam, Derbyshire. This charming establishment offers classic cooking and a quaint atmosphere, making it a popular choice for visitors. In addition to its cozy interior, The Miners Arms also features a lovely garden and provides B&B rooms for those looking to extend their stay.
Just returned from a great 2 night stay. I'll get the 1 negative point out the way. The rooms were dated and could deffo do with a few quid being spent on them. That said, they were comfortable and had everything you'd expect. What more than made up for that was the food, drinks and especially the staff. The food was very good albeit very generous in portion size. The draft ale was great and the wine I had was very drinkable. The staff were welcoming, friendly, helpful and attentive. We'd like to give a special mention to Dani who was amazing. Thank you for a wonderful stay, we hope to visit again soon.

You WILL NOT REGRET staying here! Nestled in a beautiful, quaint village in the Peak District of Derbyshire, this place is truly a hidden gem! The staff was helpful and friendly, the rooms were comfortable and clean, iron/ironing board were available upon request, the Bakewell pudding was OUT OF THIS WORLD (get the custard!), and the village was a lovely place to walk, both in the evenings and the mornings. You'll love discovering the historical significance of both the village and the Miners Arms. Also nearby within easy driving distance is the palatial Chatsworth House, worth a visit in and of itself. We were slightly concerned about the noise coming from the outdoor pub guests outside our 2nd floor window at night, but the pub closed promptly at 2200, so we had no issues, after all. Stayed with a group of 5 friends (including 2 couples), and we all want to go back. We cannot recommend this place highly enough!
Kobi N — Google review
We called in for lunch whilst exploring the village. The pub is traditional and we received a warm welcome. There’s seating to the front and the rear of the pub and as it was a warm day we sat outside and had drinks and some lunch. The menu was varied with some great options including sandwiches. The food we had was really nice and good value for the price. We were only staying in the next village, so popped back up for a pint in the evening too. It was really vibrant with lots of friendly locals and a good atmosphere. As a bonus there is a really decent sized car park at the back. I would recommend this place to everyone and will visit again when I’m next in the area for sure.

Wonderful 2 night stay this week. The staff are friendly and helpful and the food is beautifully cooked and presented. Dogs welcome in all rooms, restaurant and bar. We found it by accident but will definitely recommend and book again.

We both had a roast and it was lovely. Portions were a bit big for us but we never eat too much so that's normal. Service was good. Staff were kind. It is also dog friendly, even for big dogs like ours.

We were stopping local so called in a couple of times for drinks and food. Always served in a very friendly manner by the lovely ladies who work there. Our order was taken promptly and served in good time, lovely tasty food (I had the pie and my partner had chicken with leek and stilton) served with well cooked veg, nice local ale too 🍺 😋 Recommended place to come 👌🏻 Edit: We came for the Sundi roast today aswell - very nice ! Lovely pub with very friendly staff. Had 3 excellent local ales on pump ( I really liked the Swift Nick). We ate here a few times when staying in the village and the food was excellent every time - I especially loved the seared tuna steak with new potatoes. Dog friendly throughout.
Keith E — Google review
We ordered the roast dinner along with a kid’s fish and chips and a sandwich, a pint of Guinness too. The Guinness was ok: poured improperly (nozzle went into the drink when topping-up) and settled a little slowly but not too bad. Food took a long time to arrive but arrived hot and freshly cooked. The beef was decent and a good portion too. Roast potatoes were very good but I’d have liked a few more. Veg was fresh, crisp and not mush, gravy was excellent. The Yorkshire wasn’t great, however: overdone on the outside and underdone inside. Another disappointment was the knives we were given: i had to saw at my beef to cut it; Initially I thought the beef was going to be tough but realised with the first mouthful that it was tender and juicy, and the knife was the culprit. Staff were attentive and friendly, atmosphere was nice. I would go back if I’m in the area again.

Beautiful place, really high quality food and a great atmosphere. Really impressed by the staff - the lads waiting tables and working the bar were all young, but professional and good at their jobs. The food was inspired and cooked to perfection. Only negatives are that there was only one vegetarian main course option and the cleanliness of the toilet let the place down, but everything else was so good I am still saying five stars!
Sam A — Google review
We’ve been here twice now and I really like the food and friendliness of the staff. The second time we had a few issues with slower service due to being a busy Sunday and newer staff, but they apologised and it’s not really something to hold against a local business, so I would say the rest of the experience makes up for this. The manager for the day (25th sept) made the visit really enjoyable and relaxed. The drinks on offer are great, nice and easy parking nearby and other shops to look around. Decent food selection including pizzas and a lovely old building! Please be aware that it IS an old stone property so can feel a bit colder than some pubs and restaurants. I hope this place keeps getting support and goes from strength to strength!

Small but perfectly formed, describes this venue! Plenty of outdoor seating, but weather was a little variable for that option when we visited. Lovely staff and food that tasted every bit as good as it looked. We had spinach and feta tart and a roasted veg, chilli jam, cheese toasty, both served with a delicious homemade coleslaw, and great coffee. Not the cheapest lunch out there, but definately worth the money.

Beautiful little cafe in the lovely village of Eyam. Called here early this year and got an amazing jam and coconut sponge. Back in Eyam this weekend, and was determined to try it again. I was disappointed they didn't have it on Friday, but a kind member of staff said they'd have it today, Sunday - and they did!! It was as amazing as I'd remembered. Beautiful toasted sandwiches and soup at lunchtime too. Highly recommend and I look forward to returning again.
