Athena Tapınağı, also known as the Temple of Athena, is a must-visit historical site located in Assos, Turkey. Situated on the acropolis 238 meters above sea level, this ancient Doric order temple dates back to 530 BC and was dedicated to Athena. The remains of six original columns can still be seen today. Behramkale village, where the temple is located, is an old Ottoman Empire village with only 150 houses built inside ancient walls.
The Assos Athena Temple is an iconic structure located in the ancient city of Assos, within the Behramkale Village in Çanakkale, Turkey. Built in the 6th century BCE, it stands on the acropolis of Assos at 235 meters above sea level, offering breathtaking views of the Aegean Sea and the nearby island of Lesbos. The temple is significant as the only example of Doric-style architecture from the Archaic period in Anatolia. Dedicated to the goddess Athena, the temple was central to the city’s spiritual life and symbolizes wisdom and protection. It originally featured 34 columns and housed a statue of Athena, though much of its original structure is now in ruins due to time and looting. Archaeological excavations in Assos began in the 19th century and continue today, preserving its historical essence. The temple’s location and its stunning sunset views make it a popular destination for history enthusiasts and photographers alike.

The temple of Athena was really beautiful and all of the surrounding grounds in ancient ruins that can be explored. Make this a beautiful place to go.

Alper G — Google review
We came to Assos just to see this temple. Really worth it for the view and the vibes. We spent an hour walking around. You can go down to the rest of the ancient city from here. Wear proper shoes because of cobblestones.
Jane N — Google review
Another lovely historic place. Its pretty high so if you don't have a car, you better be prepared for a walk. When you get to the top, you will be amazed by the view. You can see ocean and land together. If you come to Assos, don't skip here. Especially if you like watching views.
Arda E — Google review
8 years later, I had the opportunity to see this magnificent temple for the second time. Like the first time, I was enchanted by its history and beauty, it is a must-see place. If you are coming by car, there is a parking lot at the entrance of the hill. As soon as you get out of the vehicle, the attendant comes to you and asks for 20 TL. To reach the temple, you have to climb the hill for 15-20 minutes. My advice is to drink a glass of black mulberry(Karadut) juice at the beginning of the road, because you will need energy. When you see the Single Domed Mosque with White Minaret, take a deep breath, you are almost there. If you have a museum card, you can pass the turnstiles without waiting in line. Otherwise, the entrance is 50 TL. There were 5-10 people in line when I went. The Temple of Athena is the first stop of the ancient Ruins. You can go to the Theater, Agora and other structures on the pathway after passing the turnstiles. But I must warn, the road is very long and hilly. Have a nice trip 🤞🏻
Mert A — Google review
Getting here From Çanakkale go to the Canakkale otogar Look for the Ayvacık/assos bus (60TL) Stop in Ayvacık Take the next bus to Assos (25TL) Bus stops at the bottom of the hill, walk up to the entrance. Takes about 1.5hr total. Expect to spend at least 3 hours on site, there's lots of ground to cover. Enter from the top, exit at the bottom (unless you want to hike all the way back up). No toilets on site, use the one at the beginning of town. The view from this temple is absolutely breathtaking. This is a must visit if you're in Turkey.
Manichanh M — Google review
Amazing place to visit, soaked with ancient history. The view from the mountain is simply spectacular. One thing to keep in mind is that you have to climb quite a lot to get there. There are places with quite cheap souvenirs all the way up to the entrance of the museum. Wondeful experience.

Assos Ancient City, also known as Behramkale Ancient City, is a captivating archaeological site in Canakkale. The town is famous for its delicious olives and the abundance of olive trees that cover every corner. The historical significance of Assos is evident as you walk through the well-preserved ruins, including the Temple of Athena and an ancient theater.
An ancient city with a fascinating view located in Behramkale Village. It has fewer ruins compared to other ancient cities. You leave the cars in the village and walk to the ancient city. There are no suitable roads for wheelchair users. You can enter with your museum card. It is probably much more enjoyable at sunset.
Nilay S — Google review
Asos Ancient City was truly impressive. The stone paths, ruins, and especially the Temple of Athena take you back in time. It wasn’t too crowded, so it was easy to walk around. I think anyone interested in history would really enjoy it.
Burak B — Google review
The doric temple still exudes holiness, even today. Although it’s a long walk, the ancient city down shouldn’t be missed. I recommend visiting during the off-season to fully immerse yourself in the divine atmosphere of the temple.
M. A — Google review
The ancient city itself is amazing. However the description and maintenance are a bit lacking. Bring your own water, wear comfortable shoes and go to the toilet before you enter the ruin.
Chia-chen L — Google review
It is located on the hill, you have to make a lot of effort to go up, there are shops on the right and left as you go up, there is the Temple of Artemis on the top floor.
Baran A — Google review
There are so many steep walkways be aware of it. You can enter the site with museum cards or with a ticket. There are no canteens in the site so bring your water because there are so many stairs to take to go the theater :). The landscape is so amazing espacially the sea view.

Beautiful place, calm serene with a certain energy. Please don't take plastic stuff there. Certainly not plastic bags. If you take something make sure to bring all of it back. There is a lot of plastic trash in TURKIYE in all such places. Humans are disgusting.

Nestled just beyond the Necropolis lies a newer entrance to the ancient ruins, complete with a convenient parking area. For those who prefer not to trek back through town, there's a steep path that runs alongside the city wall, leading you up towards breathtaking views from the hilltop. The ongoing excavations at this historical site reveal remarkable structures like the Acropolis, Temple of Athena, Agora, and an impressive theater.
This was definitely a 5-Star archeological site! An abundance of ruins in various states of completeness. Highly Recommend!

Assos Antik Tiyatro is a must-visit destination that offers an incredible glimpse into the rich history of the ancient city of Assos. Perched on a hill, this archaeological site provides stunning views of Lesvos and the Aegean Sea, making it a perfect spot for photography enthusiasts and history buffs alike. While exploring, you might even catch the melodic call to prayer from a nearby mosque, adding to the enchanting atmosphere.
Definitely a place to visit. One of the ruins with the greatest view ever. You can see Lesvos and the view on the Aegean is breathtaking. I recommend to have a stay at the harbor, not. In the village on the top of the hill. F.e. we stayed in Assos hotel on 3rd floor in a room with a terrace with great sea view. The fish restaurants downstairs are mainly all same.

A time machine into the history of the city of Assos! This landmark has seen a huge number of civilisations across thousands of years. Beautiful spot to sit and enjoy the views, you might even be lucky to here an Ezan from the local mosque 🕌 5/5 must see if you are in Assos, you can enter with either a standard ticket or a museum card! Pretty cheap too.

One of the best ancient cities in Turkey worth seeing. Whether in the morning or in the afternoon, you need to spare time to visit this huge ancient site. You should definitely see it from the top of the mountain to the harbour. Due to the 🔥 weather, I recommend visiting in the morning or evening during summer. You can take beautiful photos with the sea.

Kind a little bit upset to go here cause you only got one route to get there and as soon as you got there you can not find this historical port because it has been used as hotel and restaurant there. It was below my expectations. Although also it is nice to go to historical place

With its stunning balcony views that overlook the sea and provide a perfect backdrop for sunset watching, this eatery offers not just great food but also a warm and welcoming atmosphere thanks to its lovely owners. The service here is exceptional, making every guest feel at home.
This restaurant is fantastic. We ate very well and came back several times because the food is excellent. The terrace upstairs is very beautiful. The owners are very kind and generous. They helped us several times and provided great assistance. I highly recommend this restaurant. Çok teşekkür ederim !

Unbeatable dining spot with incredible views to the sea and sunset. All the mezze were amazing and above average and pretty big portions, fish was fresh, everything came perfect and fast. We tried to book in advance but they did not take it since it was busy weekend with public holidays, but still we came early and we found a spot.
Mireia C — Google review
Every time we are at Behramkale, we visit this restaurant, eat at one of the tables on the balcony while watching the sunset. Owners are very welcoming and lovely people. Service is great and food is delicious. We mostly order mantı. They bring yogurt, sauce and spices separately for the kids (which my kids love as they like to add everything themselves). Also definitely try their gözleme, stuffed or fried squash flowers, and yaprak sarma (stuffed grape leaves). All the food is made by the owners.

A local mom and pop restaurant on the hill in ASOS. They offer 4 types of Börek, we tried them all and they were all delicious. Their baklava is also yummy and the upstairs patio has a great view of sea and surrounding area. The restaurant is worth a visit if you’re in the area.

Absolutely fantastic Turkish-Aegean cuisine! The calamari is the best I’ve ever had. The service is polite & very attentive. The atmosphere is magical on the 2nd floor, with lovely views of the area. Nestled in the charming coastal town of Assos, the Assos Yıldız Hotel offers a delightful blend of rustic charm and authentic hospitality. This family-run establishment features cozy rooms that may be on the smaller side but are filled with character, providing a peaceful retreat for travelers seeking tranquility. Guests can enjoy delicious meals at the on-site Assos Yıldız Balık Restaurant, which boasts a lovely pier setting perfect for seafood lovers.
Probably the best hotel in the port area. Great view from the rooms, just at the edge of the port so it's quiet. The restaurant is also the best we tried in the area. The combination of food, service and price makes here highly desirable. That means you have to make reservations beforehand. We thank all the staff for this nice vacation.

We enjoyed staying here. Asena is a great host. It is a boutique hotel. Room was comfortable and minimalist. The view is outstanding. Breakfast was awesome. They also have small lovely fish restaurant nearby. Parking might be troublesome and there are always stairs to climb, no elevator.
Serap D — Google review
It is a family-run hotel in a nice building with history, you can see family photos on the walls. We liked breakfasts, especially homemade bread rolls with cheese and herbs inside. Our room had a terrace and a great view onto the harbour with fishing boats. It’s not a 5-star hotel, it’s not about that, you should come here for the atmosphere, calmness and authenticity. The hotel hasn’t got its own beach beds and umbrellas, but we walked a bit further and found a divine place with crystal clear water on a newly constructed wooden terrace - there was no one except us, such a lovely time we had, it cost 30 tl daily, no hustle and bustle. Initially planned to stay 2 nights but then stayed for one more.

Run by a kind family. You shouldn't come with high expectations about facility as it is an old building like others in the area. Rooms are a bit small. Heating was good. Cleanness is not bad but should be improved a little bit. What you need to expect is authenticity and silence in this area. You may spend a bit more and choose Kervansaray if you are looking for a cosier place. I didn't stay there but had such an impression. Overall, was a good value for the price in autumn season.

People are different both in wishes and needs. Our opinion about "Assos Yildiz" is that this was a great choice for us. The hotel was cozy, served good food and had a very engaged smiling personal who did their best for us during our two night stay. They were also able to communicate in English which is crucial are foreigners. We visited several restaurants in the area and just a couple of them had personal who were able to communicate with us. One catch on our hotel was the amount of cars passing by, as the hotel is located as one of the first ones. However, we for sure recommend that place.
