Montbazon in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Montbazon, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Montbazon is a small Loire Valley town best known for the medieval Fortress of Montbazon, one of the oldest stone keeps in France, which often hosts historical demonstrations and themed events. Its position along the Indre River offers pleasant walking and cycling routes in a quieter setting than nearby cities. The town sits just south of Tours, making it a convenient base for exploring major Loire châteaux and vineyards. Nearby sites such as the Château de Candé add further historical interest, including 20th‑century royal connections.
With favorites like Auberge de la Courtille, Montbazon Castle, and 🫶 On se retrouve l’année prochaine ! ✨, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Auberge de la Courtille and KEBAB TACOS TIME MONTBAZON so you can get the best taste of Montbazon while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

We had an incredible experience at fortress de Montbazon! The staff were very friendly but also very knowledgeable, making the visit even more enjoyable. They all spoke English and french with ease. The location was very well maintained, adding to the overall charm of the castle. Highly recommended for history enthusiasts and anyone seeking a memorable visit! We recommend when travelling through Tours.

Lovely castle to visit, plenty of hands on activities for children of all ages, eith friendly staff. Great for kids and adults alike, especially the axe throwing!
The G — Google review
Very interesting place for all ages, tours and detailed descriptions in French but enough to see and do for English speakers too. We loved the old games section, climbing up the fortress/castle and the little pizza balls at the cafe were amazing and surprisingly affordable. The family loved the axe and ninja star throwing room. Each adult/paying child gets two tokens to spend on special activities, e.g. pottery, calligraphy, leather work - but for most you leave with something to take home. Extra shout out to Claire from the calligraphy tent who was very kind and patient with my daughters.
Francesca M — Google review
5 hours felt like 5 minutes! There are informative, hands-on activities for kids that even adults will enjoy. English translations were correct and most of the staff speak English. The tour with a knight was funny and interesting (the English translation of the text is available at the front desk.)NOTE: people with knee and hip problems might have a hard time getting around. It was a fun stop that was worth the visit: you can eat the region specialty. -fouée- on-site for approx 3 euros each!

Just MAGNIFICENT! For those who are skeptical or new to it, check it out, I promise you will be won over!!! Personally, we fell for 2 photos which can be found in our living room as modern paintings, sold ready to hang. Guinguette de Montbazon is a charming French-style riverside restaurant that welcomes guests for lunch and dinner every day from April to October. It has been a favorite spot for families and groups for over 20 years, offering a unique experience by the water. The place is known for its delicious kebabs, paninis, tacos, and burgers. Visitors can enjoy the beautiful scenery by the river while kids have fun with inflatable play areas.
Food and service were great. Beautiful scenery in Nature, with duckies. Bouncing castles for kids. Wish there were ceiling fans but it was ok.
Eve L — Google review
Lovely riverside spot, shady and airy on a hot stormy day in June. Good friendly service. Delicious and generous portion of shared friture. Disappointed by salad. The Tourangelle sounded great on the menu but the rillons were flabby and undercooked, and the salad was just lettuce and a couple of baby toms. Overall would recommend and will be back to try something else next time as the setting and location is great.
Alex C — Google review
Food lovely. Service very slow. If you order a starter, expect to wait 45 mins or more for a Caesar salad???
Ed M — Google review
Had a lovely meal here. Arrived fairly early in the evening and got a table on the edge of the terrace near the river. Such a lovely spot to enjoy then evening. Shared a charcuterie and then had the burger for main course which was nice.

Great little place, Montbazon. Lots of character, oodles of charm. Lovely little cafes, bistros and restaurants.
Marina K — Google review
Very nice setting, but the menu was very limited and the Ceasar salad was unfortunately made with "breaded" chicken.

Very pleasant, good service, down by the river, lovely venue to spend a couple of hours

Nestled in the heart of Tours, Auberge de la Courtille is a culinary gem that has been delighting diners for over two decades. This charming restaurant offers an impressive array of dishes at reasonable prices, making it a favorite among locals and visitors alike. Guests rave about the attentive staff and exceptional service, which perfectly complements the flavorful entrees and creative mains inspired by local French cuisine.
Please do not take any notice of any negative reviews of this restaurant, it is a true and rare delight. My friend and I booked online ( a great advantage in itself) for a meal to celebrate the last evening of our 5 week road trip. We were delighted by every aspect of our visit. We were looked after impeccably, the food was delicious ( the best beef steak I have tasted for many years) and the timing of the service of the courses was perfect ( this isn't McDonalds!!! so a few moments between courses is just as it should be). The owner and the waitress were both friendly and professional. Brilliant evening which will be remembered for a long time, thank you both.

Booked this place on line months ago, since we were staying on the campsite opposite. It was our 50th Wedding anniversary meal with our son, daughter and our grandchildren. No contact whatsoever, so came as no surprise when we enquired at tourist info opposite that it was closed. Too late to find another restaurant, so it was a hotchpotch of food from supermarket and deli. Best meal ever.

Some of the best food we ate in France and at very reasonable prices. The staff were very attentive and friendly, highly recommended.

(Translated by Google) An excellent inn where you eat very well prepared dishes and where all the products are local, a treat. The salmon and foie gras are homemade by a passionate chef. The pumpkin cream soft-boiled egg will delight you. The kidneys are not left out! Everything we tasted was delicious and of very high quality, at really very affordable prices for this level of service... The owner is extremely friendly with great experience and if you order the wine by the glass, call on his advice because you will not be disappointed. A very young team takes care of you to perfection... really beautiful cuisine, a beautiful atmosphere and real passion. I recommend this restaurant... and congratulations to the whole team, whether in the kitchen or in the dining room. We are only waiting for one thing: to have another stay in Montbazon so that we can return.
