Step into the Wild West at Red Dog Saloon, a historic 19th-century tavern that offers a unique experience with live music, Chicago-style pizza, cocktails, and coffee. The saloon has been period-restored to honor its Old West legacy while incorporating modern touches. Live country music adds to the lively atmosphere on weekends. Additionally, visitors can enjoy Tex-Mex cuisine at Cafe Del Rio or satisfy their sweet tooth at Barrels O Candy and Grandmas Fudge Factory nearby.
Great place for pizza, drinks and more! The service was good and the pizza was delicious! We stopped in during our V&T Railway visit from Carson City. Had a great time with another couple and like how it is set up, you order your food & pop on one side, then adult beverages from the bar. It was a neat little bar with a good food and beverage selection. Nice old west decor, Fun atmosphere and good place for people watching. Had a great time!

The Red Dog Saloon is a lively and historic spot that perfectly captures the Old West charm of Virginia City. The atmosphere is fun and full of character, with live music, great drinks, and friendly service. It’s a place where you can relax, enjoy good food, and soak in the town’s vibrant spirit. The pizza and wings are popular favorites, and the rustic décor adds to the authentic experience. It can get a bit loud and crowded at times, but that’s part of the energy that makes it special. Overall, the Red Dog Saloon is a must-visit in Virginia City a great mix of history, music, and good times.
Lg G — Google review
Apparently a seminal location for the San Francisco renaissance of the 1960's, with psychedelic-rock memorabilia galore adorning the walls. The pizza slice a friend shared with me was excellent. Unfortunately, my order of fish n chips was quite middling. Great, warm staff. Ordered at window, given a pager, tho food was brought to table. Sadly this 3 night visit to VC on business was exhausting, and I did not have the opportunity to return. Will def be back for that bussin pizza, and some merch next time in the area.

Beer was good allow dogs forgot to bring out ribs didnt refund people at the bar was great very fun. Life music
Jo S — Google review
Definitely gets busy and can get loud. But super food and service. Waited a few for our pizza but was super slammed. Otherwise worth the wait. We always go there when we're in virginia city at least 2-3 times in couple days.
Heather N — Google review
The food and atmosphere are great! The BBQ chicken pizza was especially tasty. They have multiple bathrooms, which is a plus, compared to other businesses in the area. The service is pretty typical of a fast casual dining experience - they’re friendly as they take your order, they deliver your food to your table, but other than that you’re on your own. Not that that’s a bad thing. The food is a little pricey, but you expect that in small, kitschy, tourist town restaurants. Our only complaint is that it takes a long time to get your food. To their credit, they have a disclaimer on their menu board that wait times will be long. Aside from that, it’s an all-around great place to eat!
Devin O — Google review
Nice, friendly and has a family feel to it. Great servers with 10 beers on tap and a area to get a good selection of food from that smelled delicious. Bathrooms were clean and there was a live band playing that was pretty good as well. We've been to most of the bars in town and this one is still our favorite.

Step into the Wild West at the Bucket of Blood Saloon, a historical bar in Virginia City dating back to 1876. The vintage decor and Old West memorabilia create an authentic atmosphere, while live country music performances on weekends add to the lively ambiance. This quirky spot also hosts unique events like the Annual World Championship Outhouse Races in October, showcasing Virginia City's offbeat charm.
The Bucket of Blood Saloon in Virginia City, NV is an authentic piece of Wild West history! Stepping through those swinging doors felt like time traveling to the 1870s mining boom days. The historic wooden bar, antique decorations, and period photos create a genuinely atmospheric experience. I enjoyed a cold beer while listening to live piano music that perfectly matched the saloon's vintage vibe. The staff were friendly and shared fascinating stories about the building's colorful past. This isn't some touristy recreation - it's the real deal with genuine character and charm. A must-visit stop when exploring Virginia City's historic district!

No food, do have popcorn though. But the employees, atmosphere, products and beverages are awesome. We always load up on stuff when we go there every year. Highly recommend for price and fun.

In my opinion, the Bucket Of Blood Saloon is a must-visit during a trip to Virginia City. Enjoy a drink, the memorabilia, and/or the view from the back window. I think you'll be glad you went.

Visited Virginia City for the Chili On The Comstock Festival. From the moment we arrived it was great. The entire festival was another of fun. The Bucket of Blood Saloon exhuded tons of charm and the people we met were very nice and friendly. Highly recommended...Thumbs up!

Great place to sit a spell! We took the V&T Railway from Carson City to Virginia City and found this gem of a saloon! The staff was very nice and attentive. The spicy bloody mary was excellent! The view out the back window was awesome! They have a good selection of food and drinks, as well as t-shirts, hoodies, slot machines, etc. Even saw a guy walking a pig outside the front door. Haha! We loved the laid back old west atmosphere and the unique decor throughout. The hanging chandeliers were exquisite. And did I mention that bloody mary? Yum! Highly recommend!
Rob V — Google review
We stopped in for a beer and learned that their Bloody Mary is the specialty of the house. Corrie was our bar tender. She made the drinks to our spiciness-liking. They were so delicious that we had a second round. The band was fantastic. I requested the song JACKSON. Free bowls of popcorn. Notice the antique jewel colored pickle jars on shelf above the liquor bottles. I highly recommend a visit to this saloon.

Drinks only for us. Bloody Mary, ice tea and beer. Free popcorn, band started and we were at the famous window table. What a great view.

Nestled in the heart of Virginia City, the Palace Restaurant & Saloon has been a cherished establishment since 1875, offering visitors a taste of classic American fare. This historic venue is renowned for its mouthwatering burgers, crispy fries, and an array of sandwiches that cater to every palate. The inviting saloon atmosphere enhances your dining experience, making it perfect for enjoying a cold beer alongside your meal.
Cool place to eat. Get here before it changes into someplace non-nestalgic. They need an interior designer. Still better than Bonanza across the street. Food was good overall. Do not get the cabbage cup they call coleslaw. I don't think they put any sauce in it. Oh, the lady waitress thought we wanted to hear her sing over the music being played. We couldn't wait to leave. Our waiter Mike was great.
Anthony M — Google review
We stopped in for lunch. The wait was over an hour after saying it would be only 30-40 minutes, but they gave us an electronic beeper and we had time to browse the shops. We came back to check our status and a table was still not ready, so several of us went to the bar to order a beer. Rachel was tending bar and she was great. I wanted a light beer, nothing too heavy. She gave me a sample of the Palace brand and it was perfect. Very refreshing, light on the hops, and easy going down. We were seated at a booth for six and lo and behold, Rachel ended up being our server. One of her favorite songs came on, and before we ordered, we were entertained with her singing to us. She did a great job as a singer and as our server. Everyone at the table ordered something different. Our table of 6 ordered a turkey sandwich, a couple different variations of Reuben's, a California Club, and the hubs and I had their fish n chips special. Everything was tasty n fresh. Portions were large and served with fries. Several to go boxes were needed and everyone was quite satisfied with their lunch. Prices are reasonable, too. We would make the drive from Reno to eat here again.

Virginia City! Yes, please! What a beautiful restaurant and saloon! Our server, Mike, was very personable and knowledgeable about the history of this establishment. We ordered the golden fried mushrooms, which were delicious. Fish and chips, the old fashioned way, with malt vinigar, also delicious. Cheddar beef dip, which was the best we have had in over 20 years!

The Fish and chips were great...my wife enjoyed the Veggie sandwich. Granddaughters ate from the kids men... grilled cheese and the chicken strips. The service could not have been better, Rachel is awesome...
Glenn C — Google review
The food was incredible! However the service was mixed. Our waitress wasn’t very willing to answer questions and her responses were clipped and unfriendly. However her demeanor improved later so perhaps she was just having a rough day. The sandwiches we ordered (elk burger and chicken pickle) were incredibly delicious and the fries were perfect. Very happy with the meal itself.
Siera S — Google review
Stopped in for lunch and enjoyed the old west saloon atmosphere. I had the pastrami Reuben’s, they have a few choices in Reuben’s, and it was very good. The service was friendly and attentive even though the place was busy. Prices were not too bad for being a tourist area except for the extra 50 cents they unexpectedly charged my husband for mayonnaise on his burger which was a spoonful in a little cup….

We love traveling to VC and a few times a year, it’s like walking back into the early 1900’s, we enjoy shopping and checking out the ghost tours at The Washoe Club and Mackay Mansion. I highly recommend coming to this adorable old town!
Tami S — Google review
Our previously planned vacation here for later this year has been canceled due to the discovery of a disturbing video on TikTok depicting extreme racism. The lack of intervention by any bystanders suggests that the entire town may be complicit in this type of behavior. It is deeply saddening and disappointing that such incidents continue to occur in the present day.
Ponce L — Google review
The Virginia City Visitor Center is a great place to star a visit of the Old Western cute gold mining town Virginia with many of its original buildings still standing today. You can easily spend a full day visiting the many bars, restaurants, candy and souvenir stores along the Main Street and many original homes from the time. There are many details to pay attention to while strolling the old western style wooden sidewalks. People are generally friendly, but the city can be crowded on weekends and holidays. By all means worth a visit while in Nevada.

Virginia city knows about this place and now it’s time for the world to get a glimpse of this place. I went for the breakfast and stayed for diner and a second breakfast on the next day. They had the best mashed potatoes that I’ve ever had. If that’s all you go and eat you will be a fan of this place. It’s so quaint and yet so elegant at the same time. But the food!!!!! Anything on the menu I want to say is delicious. Here’s what I had.

Experience a journey through time with the Virginia & Truckee Railroad Company, offering historic train rides along two routes: the "Sisters in History Route" and the "Historic Route." The multimillion dollar reconstruction of this historic railroad allows visitors to ride through the original line, passing old mines and silver ore veins. Dating back to 1869, this rail line was crucial for transporting silver from the area's mines.
Educational and fun, nice people working there. A little short but enjoyable regardless. Good way to see gold hill as I couldn't get there or didn't want to in my RV.

One of the most memorable tours we have been on! We loved the explanation of everything we were seeing along the way and that the tour guide spent time to answer questions! Going through the train tunnel was unforgettable and American Flats is a beautiful place! Highly organized by a friendly group of folks! Thank you for making this memory special for us and teaching us about my home state, the Silver State!

Great experience in the train ride. It's a short ride of around 40 mins with a guide explaining the history and the significance. Lots to hear and see and learn. Fun experience.

Nice train ride where some stories about Virginia are told. We took the 35 minute tour which runs daily every hour. It was a little bit short and you’ll have to take the same way back (no round tour).
Stefan H — Google review
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The Ride the V&T Railroad tour was shorter than I expected, and honestly felt a bit pricey for the length. That said, the experience was saved (and then some!) by our conductor. His vibrant personality, comforting voice, and deep knowledge of the history along the route made the ride engaging and memorable. If you’re looking for a quick trip through some beautiful scenery with an extra dose of charm thanks to the crew, it’s worth checking out. Just know going in that the ride itself is on the shorter side.

absolutely disgusted by this tour guide. when stopped half way I asked my four year old child if she wanted a picture. the tour guide proceeded to go on the microphone and asked who I'm talking to because "he was talking". I said I'm asking my daughter if she wanted a picture. he publicly shamed me saying he "doesn't care who I'm talking to everyone can hear me" and to be quiet. he also spent a good 5 min degrading Chinese people. my 4 year old whispered when she wanted to talk to me after this. would never go again and never recommending it

Such a nice train ride. We enjoyed the conductor a lot. He gives a good history of the area and has a fun sense of humor. The gift shop has a variety of goodies for all tastes. The front is a shady area to rest while you wait for the train. We will certainly be back for the holiday season to see Santa there.

The Mackay Mansion Museum, originally built in 1859 by George Hearst as the headquarters of the Gould & Curry Mining Company Office, is now a well-preserved Victorian-era mansion. The museum showcases original period furnishings, mining artifacts, and Tiffany silver. Visitors can explore the office, dining room, and upstairs residence rooms while learning about its rich history.
Went there with my wife and friend. Dawn was really well versed on the history of the area and more importantly, the building. Really awesome history lesson. The paranormal stuff was fun, she showed us pictures that had been taken in the mansion of known ghosts. The way it was presented was credible and modern (she looked up pics on her phone haha). She lets us play around and do a little light ghost hunting. We had a blast, definitely worth 14 dollars. For the record I’m a ghost skeptic and I was impressed with how Dawn made the atmosphere feel haunted and set the tone in a way that made it enjoyable to give the idea of ghosts some credence. Really great tour and a fun way of end our day in Virginia City!

We had a fantastic tour of the Mackay Mansion with Dawn, and it was one of the highlights of our time in Virginia City. Dawn was incredibly knowledgeable and made the tour feel personal—she tailored it to our interests and shared so many fascinating details about John Mackay, Virginia City’s history, the strong connections to San Francisco, Hearst Castle, and much more. The mansion itself is stunning, filled with original furniture and artifacts, each with its own story connected to important figures in history. Dawn also wove in some of the spookier tales of the house, which made the experience even more memorable. We came away learning so much, and it truly felt like stepping back in time. We loved every minute of it and would highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Virginia City.

The guided tour of the historic Mackay Mansion was nothing short of amazing! Our tour guide made the entire experience unforgettable—he was knowledgeable, funny, and brought the rich (and spooky!) history of the mansion to life. You can tell he loves what he does, and that energy is contagious. The mansion itself is breathtaking, from its well-preserved rooms to the beautifully kept grounds that make you feel like you’ve stepped back in time. Between the fascinating stories, the hints of haunted history, and the gorgeous setting, this tour had the perfect mix of charm and chills. Highly recommend this tour if you’re in Virginia City—it’s a must-do!

The Washoe Club Museum & Saloon is a historic establishment dating back to 1862, offering visitors a glimpse into the past with its original chandeliers and luxurious accommodations that once attracted mining magnates during the Gold Rush. This storied saloon in Virginia City also houses a history museum featuring exhibits and offers ghost tours, drawing in enthusiasts from around the world.
So Virginia City has become a bit of a tourist trap with loads of over the top schlock and overpriced everything. If you like that kind of thing - fantastic! I don't so much. However, if you find yourself there, Washoe Club is the bright spot. Tours are reasonably priced, the folks who run this historical business are incredibly lovely and the tour guide is phenomenal. These folks worked with me ahead of time to move my tour date tickets three times for various reasons and when I walked in, greeted me by name! That's impressive. The tour guide was not only personable but had a deep knowledge of local history and how the club impacted national events. If you're in it only for the paranormal, he's got you covered there too! Truly enjoyed the time at the OWC!

I’ve been on several really good ghost tours in San Francisco, so I kinda knew what to expect during a tour. However, I was amazed by the history of the Washoe Club and of the paranormal activity described by our tour guide as we walked through the rooms. I must say that the spookiest area to me was the “Crypt.” The oddity was the spiral staircase that wound its way to the top floor. Back in the day, only the wealthy had access to the top via this staircase. Apparently there are several ghosts that frequent this area, although I didn’t see any. There were a lot of things covered in 45 minutes but I felt good about the tour and would recommend it. I’m now ready for the overnight lock-in.🫣

First time visiting the Washoe Club. This place is amazing! My family and I are paranormal investigators and have been wanting to visit for quite some time. We went on the tour and got to go up into the millionaire's Club. Our tour guide was so friendly and had so much knowledge the history of this building. I was even lucky enough to capture multiple orbs in my pictures. My husband and I plan on going back in October for our anniversary and my birthday and doing the overnight tour, I can't wait! 🖤

On the ghost tour they take to upstairs to check out the mostly empty and storage areas with past ghost encounters. The tour guide was really good and have is plenty of stories as well as his personal experiences. It was a lot of fun!

We had a great time. Rented an EMF meter and ours was very active. I've been through the tour several times before. However, this is the first time ive experienced activity. I was taped on my shoulder and my friend had her hair brushed from her face. We will be back.

Mexican restaurant
Cafe Del Rio is a Tex-Mex restaurant located in the historic Werrin Building in Virginia City. Since 2005, it has been offering a variety of Mexican, Southwestern, and Mexicali dishes made from fresh ingredients and traditional techniques. The restaurant's charming ambiance adds to the dining experience, with its location near off-road trails making it convenient for enthusiasts.
Love love love the vibe of this restaurant!!! The gospel fried chicken is a must-have. I have a hard time ordering anything else when it's on the menu. The service is always excellent, and they are so personable. I recommend you make this a go-to stop on your Virginia City adventures. :)

The three of us had a wonderful lunch here after riding the train to Virginia City and walking around town. I bet they have never had a client order cheesecake and a bowl of beans for lunch! 😆 Our server attended us quickly and kept our drinks topped off. I enjoyed the open window so I could watch the passersby. I think this is a place locals frequent judging by the number of families inside.

One of the nicest restaurants in Virginia City (NV). Been going here for many years. Theme of course is Mexican food, but the atmosphere is Old Virginia City... Western mining ⛏️ town. Price range posted with wine.

UPDATE: Since my last review (about a year ago) the portions have gotten better so I don’t mind the $21 menu price. My husband and I went for my birthday brunch and it was excellent! I got the gospel chicken (see photo)! YUM!! OLD REVIEW: The portions keep getting smaller and the prices keep getting larger. Honestly the prices don’t make ANY sense. The new owners clearly do not know how to cost out a menu. Menu engineering 101. Google it.

Needed backup food because Gold Hill was having a private event. Definitely made the right choice here - Virginia City is full of places where you can get some variation on "sandwich" for theme park prices. This one really provided good value for the dollar and wasn't trying to convince me that Mark Twain once arm wrestled Teddy Roosevelt at the same table where I was eating with the ghost of a jilted lover. I got the Santa Fe style enchilada, would definitely get this again. All the best parts of a tostada and an enchilada, with an egg on top - what's not to like?

This cute little Mexican restaurant is open later than a lot of places in Virginia City. It has a fun, charming and cute atmosphere. The food was delicious and the service exceptional! I found the prices reasonable. (especially for Virginia City.) I will definitely go back.

Cafe del Rio in Virginia City. Never had a bad experience here, and it has been a while, so a brief review. It's Thursday, so the crowd here is all local, but there is still a pleasant buzz in the dining room. We got reservations just in case, and when we arrived, our table already had chips, salsa, and water waiting for us. Our server seated us, and took our order quickly after a brief chat. The atmosphere is pretty unique, as the restaurant is in an historic building in one of our more lively ghost towns, but my wife and kid both say it's too cold every time we come so I'd recommend a nice sweater or jacket. The gospel fried chicken is just a blast to get every time. My wife had enchiladas, and she was thrilled with the fresh mole sauce. My son had enchiladas from the kids menu, which is nothing to write home about I'm sure, but he is a happy camper, it was warm and melty. It's easy to tell everything is homemade, and with love. The chef came out to greet us and check on things, and everyone was just pleasant as can be. It felt like a fancy family holiday dinner with no drama.

Nestled in the charming Virginia City, The Cider House at Canvas Cafe is a delightful gem that beckons food lovers from near and far. This quaint yet elegant eatery offers an inviting atmosphere reminiscent of yesteryear, adorned with nostalgic mementos and eclectic decor. Guests rave about the mouthwatering dishes on the menu, including standout items like country fried steak made with ribeye and breakfast enchiladas that surprise with their flavor.
A tiny little eatery in Virginia City, on the south side of town. The food is very tasty. The woman who was serving us was attentive and very kind. The atmosphere is a throw back to another time, with mementos and photos to the city on the walls. But also some eclectic stuff.

This is the perfect place to visit for a memorable meal and atmosphere! The owners are family that cook and host, they make the experience special. We had the French Dip and Cuban Sandwich, it was delicious 😋

Food was good, but took a while to get service. The server left to make a delivery. All of us got sick after we left. This is why I gave a 1. The cost was a lot for what we got and we won't be back

Wonderful service, great food. Steak salad was perfectly done and my mom really enjoyed the shrimp scampi. The owner was knowledgeable about VC and was a treat to talk with.

Really cool atmosphere and the food was amazing. The country fried steak and eggs is made with a Ribeye steak. The breakfast enchiladas was a great surprise and was sooo good too! We’ll be back every time we’re in Virginia City. Also, the prices are really good too.
