Fort Sumter National Monument, located in Charleston Harbor, is a significant historical site that played a pivotal role in the American Civil War. Accessible by boat, visitors can explore the ruins, gun emplacements, and a museum while learning about its place in American history. The fort saw the first shots of the Civil War when Confederate forces attacked it in 1861. Managed by the National Park Service, this nearly 200-year-old fort offers breathtaking views of downtown Charleston and the surrounding harbor.
Greatly enjoyed the ferry ride to and from the island, and of couse exploringthe island itself. It is a bit pricy but one has to take the ferry and historic site maintenance into account. All the staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful and had a sense of humor. Lots of cool history to see on the island itself,as well as seabirds and some cargo shipping going by. Some thought provoking exhibits in the visitor center as well. A nice, informative, relaxing excursion all round.
Emily B — Google review
Our national park ranger was amazing. We were there for the taking down of the flag, which was a cool thing to see, especially with a flag the size of the storm flag on the fort. The ferry ride was nice too. Plenty of places to sit in the shade and still see all around.
Brandy B — Google review
Well worth it. The guides were very passionate about history and getting out on the water to see the fort and surrounding islands was super cool! Price was right. We also saw dolphins on our journey. There is no bathroom on the fort so make sure you use it while on the ferry. Also a museum and gift shop.
Kristen G — Google review
I recommend calling ahead to make sure there is no school group booked when you are planning to go because they may be very loud and unruly (at least it was in my experience). Also, the ranger cannot give the regular tour speech and you will end up missing some interesting facts.
Manuela B — Google review
We visited this place by ferry and the volunteer was very nice and informative. They explained very well the history of the fort. In the fort you have old Canon and ammunition to see and also some unexploded bombs stuck in the walls (still there) of the fort. Once you are there, you can feel the emotions and spirit of the braves. Highly recommend
S. S — Google review
Awesome place to visit when you are in Charleston area. Rice history and great collection of stories, war artifacts in the museum. Scenic ferry ride and great view from the Fort.
Suhas D — Google review
Fort Sumter was a great experience and would recommend to anyone interested in American History. Remember to book your ferry tickets in advance, I chose the ferry that left from Liberty Square since it had move available time slots. If you take the first ferry of the day you get to experience the flag raising ceremony at the Fort itself which was cool. When on the ferry to the Fort, if the day is nice I would recommend sitting on the upper deck it has the better views of the harbor.
Jon M — Google review
The boat ride over is a great experience. The views on the ride are great. The fort tour guides are the exceptional! The views on the island are amazing. One of the best tours I have had in many years. Worth the money.

Fort Sumter and Fort Moultrie National Historical Park is a pair of historic military sites with origins dating back to 1776. The park offers stunning views of Charleston Harbor. At Fort Moultrie, visitors can see a model of the original palmetto log and sand fort that defended Charleston from British invasion in 1776.
A lot of history at the fort as well as the local area. Interesting display of cannons used at the Forch over the years. Park Ranger gave us some good information and some highlights about the park why we toured.
Marc S — Google review
Another credit to our National park service for this historic site. Impeccably maintained, loads of history here and a very informative movie at the entrance building. I hadn't known much about Fort Moultrie until I took my time and read the displays at the welcome building. All very interesting, these are the things that make history come alive. Very helpful staff and knowledgeable tour guides. Thank you
Lisa S — Google review
Visited Fort Moultrie for the first time on a weekday right at 9am when they opened. We had the place to ourselves. The exhibits in the visitor center were nice. Restrooms can be accessed from the outside of the building and we're clean. Free parking, you pay inside the visitor center before crossing the street into the fort. Overall it was interesting and the views were great. Some parts definitely need attention maintenance wise. They also had a large amount of red wasps or hornets all around, likely from all the old wood. So be cautious if youre allergic. A guided tour would likely be a good idea if you want to get the most out of your trip, though we did not do one.
Kristin — Google review
Great place to visit. Fort Moultrie is less frequented than Fort Sumter but it is definitely worth the trip. Very cool fort, bunker, museum, cannon row, etc to explore. Summer, one of the park rangers was very helpful and kind- thank you! She explained who Moultrie was (who the fort is named after) and how his victory led our country to be free!! You can get your National Park passes here which is super convenient. Also randomly happened to meet an Army veteran and military/ history buff and it was so neat to learn about everything from how they melted bread church bells in the south to make cannons to steel cannons up north, to the his own families ties to various wars and his British history and family roots in John’s Island! What a cool trip!!

Very nice national park with gave of Osceola adjacent. The park is an impressive layout of military defense that served well from the late 1700s when it was first built from Palmetto logs up into the 1800s when Ft Sumpter was built. I think appreciation of sites like this is improved when we imagine the men and women who had to endure the lifestyles and challenges of the time period. Definitely worth wandering through if you are in the area.

Amazing experience. There is interesting history this place has. It's located next to the beach. This was my first time coming here cause I was seeking somewhere to power walk. I drove by this place. It looked so interesting i had to stop. I ended up getting my power walk, seeing the outside historical wonders of this place and fishing. Three in one, can't get any better, then that!
Meika — Google review
Not a lot to see. Park for free. You are supposed to pay to see in fort. I went after to pay and after wandering around the visitors center and no one there I left. I do have my parks pass which they take so didn't steal from them.

Outstanding historical site. Guided tour on the boat by NPS rangers. Free time in the fort. Highly recommend!

Eclectic restaurant
Restaurant
The Obstinate Daughter, located on Sullivan's Island, offers an inventive menu of New American cuisine with a touch of French, Italian, and Spanish influence. The elegant country-chic space serves shareable plates such as wood-roasted clams, seasonal vegetables, oysters from the raw bar, flatbread with butterbean puree, and Frogmore chowder. Main dishes include veal cutlet over creamy grits and Capanelle made with seasonal fish.
This was the BEST meal i have ever had. I work in the food service industry, the waitress was so kind and she took the time to make the experience personal. We ordered the flat bread, the gnocchi, and the vodka pasta! SOOOO good 10/10 would come back! We also tried a bunch of desserts and they where so good! Come with a very empty stomach bc you will not want to stop eating the food.

The other reviews are right…this place was so delicious! The service, food, and cozy vibe were all amazing. My favorite dish was the farro & Brussel sprout salad (I never knew something so simple could have so much flavor! & the crunchy peanuts were such a pleasant surprise!). Our second favorite was The Rutledge pizza. We also ordered the radiatore pasta, pesce a la plancha, and chocolate mousse. All yummy :)
Jessica T — Google review
Everything was awesome from the service, the vibes, and the food. Must get reservation as wait time in peak beach season is usually 1.5-2.5 hrs. Pizza is fantastic with nice dough, and fresh ingredients. Definitely more wood fired Neapolitan vs thin and crispy. Pasta was clearly fresh, huge portion, perfectly cooked and salted well. Sauce soaked up in the noodles well but didn’t make them soggy. Parking is slightly difficult, with minimal spots attached and then street/paid parking around it.

As someone formerly in the hospitality industry, I am always grateful when I get to dine somewhere that has talented chefs & a wonderful atmosphere. Every dish was created with care & attention to detail along with amazing flavor combinations. I loved that everything was fresh. My boyfriend & I enjoyed drinks at the bar before transitioning to our table with the rest of our party. Portions are large & easily shareable. Highly recommend reservations & trying as much of the menu as you can!
Hayley S — Google review
Outstanding restaurant. We did not have a reservation but were able to get seats at the bar. Frank the bartender was terrific and helped us with drink and food choices since this was our 1st time here. Frank really knew the food and also recommended a perfect wine pairing with our 2nd dish. We split the N. Carolina Apple Salad of celery, apples, mint and dates dressed in a vinagrette with dots of gorgonzola cream on the plate. It's only available during the fall season so we went for it and were glad we did! (Pardon the salad pic taken after we began eating it!) Our 2nd splitter was a white pizza called Five Fathom Hole 3.0 with clams, rapini, mozzarella, garlic, chili flakes and fresh lemon to squeeze on it. We also had a cocktail, beer and a glass of wine.
Judy K — Google review
This restaurant doesn't particularly cater to children but it looked like the perfect, quintessential Sullivan's Island vibe I was looking for so we took a chance. We showed up after a long day walking around Charleston with cranky kids, but they were kind and understanding. We decided to start the kids off with gelato because they were hangry and we were able to order a simple, kid friendly pizza for them to share. Hubby and I both got pasta dishes and everything came out delicious. He also said his espresso martini was the best he's had. If you are looking for a casual but classy vibe with elevated food options this is the place.
Allison C — Google review
One of our favorite dining experiences during our trip to the Charleston area. We started with a seared seafood sausage in tomato butter appetizer that was fantastic followed by the Ricotta gnocchi with short rib ragu and The Rutledge pizza. We finished by sharing their pecan bourbon crème brûlée. This restaurant deserves every ounce of praise it receives. They also have an excellent Italian wine list.

Absolutely lovely time at the obstinate daughter this weekend! The food is so yummy and you really can’t go wrong with anything you choose to get. We got the sweet roll, gnocchi, and pork belly brunch item as well as the catch a buzz and another lavender drink! Highly recommend all of the above. Matt was our server and he made our experience very special as we were celebrating our anniversary with friends!! Such a great spot near the beach on Sullivans Island. I definitely would be prepared to walk a bit from where you park a since most of the parking is off the main road. Make sure to make a reservation at least a week in advance, but if you don’t make it in time, I would recommend setting notifications for reservations that open up throughout the week (that’s what we did). Absolutely worth the hype!!!

Poe's Tavern, located on Sullivan's Island, is a laid-back and innovative burger joint that pays homage to the famous author Edgar Allan Poe. The tavern offers a menu of American comfort food with a focus on delicious burgers named after Poe's literary works.
10/10 recommend! Such a cool vibe. Absolutely loved our experience. Drinks are delicious and bartenders know what they're doing! We just did drinks and nachos but would love to go back for more.

Fun, southern atmosphere with descent food. We sat outside in October and enjoyed the fresh air. My wife's and my burgers were really good, my coleslaw has been better in past visits. My wife had the Annabelle Lee, and I had the Beef sleeper burger. Beer price surprised me, seemed high, but maybe that's because we are from Wisconsin where beer flows like water at great prices. We always make a stop at Poe's when visiting.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Laid-Back Island Vibes & Seriously Good Eats at Poe’s Tavern! We stopped by Poe’s Tavern on Sullivan’s Island and were blown away! I had the Bug Burger topped with pimento cheese—and WOW. The meat was juicy, flavorful, and cooked to perfection. 🤤 Hands down one of the best burgers I’ve had in a while. We also ordered the queso, and it was a total hit—creamy, cheesy, and just the right amount of kick. The vibe was chill, the service was great, and even better, parking was free (which is a big win on the island). Prices were super reasonable for the quality of food and location. Highly recommend if you’re in the area and craving a killer burger and a relaxed island experience. 🏝️🍔🧀

The atmosphere was wonderful! We sat outside at covered picnic tables. The inside seating was warmly lit with cozy nooks. The bathroom was nice with book pages lining the walls. The food was generously portioned and fresh. I ordered the grilled chicken salad and it was delicious. You can't see the pile of boiled egg, bacon crumbles, and bleu cheese. The pimento cheese crouton was unique and yummy.

Awesome beachside in small town of Sullivans Island. One of the best fish tacos I’ve ever had. Big portion, amazing sauce, great crunch to it. It was seared Tuna crisp outside and still cold raw inside. Burger was substantial and very juicy. The onion crisps as the side are a MUST they are super addicting! One of few places with dedicated parking, great hometown beach vibes.

Tavern on Sullivan Island with a wacky vibe and fun, friendly wait staff. Edgar Allen Poe everywhere - pages from his books wallpapered the restroom walls. Mahi Mahi fish tacos were good and the burgers were THICK and cooked to order. Perfect fries the size, saltiness, and texture that all fries should be. Good beer list.

These burgers are absolutely amazing!!! 🤩 Really enjoyed sitting out on the porch, but the inside has a great vibe too. This place was highly recommended and I see why.

I left the atmosphere. I went with a group of women and they all ordered very well and liked what they got. I had the nachos that has chili on it and was not thrilled with it. But as I said, everyone else was completely satisfied with their meal. All in all, we loved it!

Pier 22 Sushi is a vibrant seafood eatery by the beach, offering al fresco dining and breakfast options. The sushi there is exceptionally fresh and delectable, served in a charming atmosphere with great ambiance. The talented chef, Hunter, skillfully prepares the sushi right before your eyes upon ordering. Gwendolyn, an attentive waitress/host, ensures that every guest receives excellent service throughout their visit.
Oysters were really good! We also had salmon avacado and spicy tuna roll.... The wontons are amazing!

Maybe be open when you have reservations booked? Maybe don’t confirm them 30 minutes before if you’re taking off early that day? Maybe answer your phone? Also no one working around here even knew this place existed. Maybe the other reviews were just some kind of fever dream?? If a restaurant takes reservations and isn’t open and doesn’t serve its customers, is it even a restaurant? Does it even exist? Is this even real life? It’s a whole “tree in the woods” sort of situation. Starting to have fun with this terrible review now…

A great local raw bar. I had the local oysters and clams, and the yellowtail crudo. Everything was fantastic.

Sushi was so fresh and delicious, and the restaurant was quaint and had awesome vibes! We have had a lot of sushi before, and this is best we have ever had! We watched the chef, Hunter, prepare it right in front of us after we ordered. Gwendolyn was a very attentive waitress/host, too, and made sure we were taken care of at all times. She even gave us suggestions for places to visit since we are from out of town. We will definitely be back to Pier 22!

What a gem! It’s tough finding high quality sushi around Charleston that isn’t all deep fried in some way, but this place does just that. Top notch ingredients, a simple menu, and most importantly delicious sushi! I recommend both the Eye of the Tiger and Yum Yum rolls. The edamame is great as well, served with a fantastic Thai chili sauce. Highly recommended, I will be back for sure!

Came in late on a rainy Sunday with my son and husband and ended up being the only people in here. The staff were awesome, the food was fabulous, extremely fresh, and we had a great experience! We just got a lot of sashimi and a few of the chefs specials and we were not disappointed! I would highly recommend this place. Great atmosphere, great staff and fantastic food.

The good- I was disappointed at first when the menu was presented as they only have a handful of options for specialty rolls. We ordered 4 rolls and less is definitely more when it comes to this location. All of the rolls (4 total ordered) were amazing. I would return/recommend if you want fresh sushi. The bad- Smaller location with sushi bar seating only. Most rolls were priced 1-3 dollars more than you would see at a normal sushi restaurant. (Expect higher prices in these touristy type locations) Soy sauce went in plates and not a tray..... not the end of the world but somthing i would have preferred.

Came in on Fourth of July and Natalie and the Chef were AMAZING. I had the best sake I’ve ever had because of the sake flight. The sushi was also FRESH. They talked about how they only open Thurs- Sunday to ensure they have the freshest ingredients. We can’t wait to come back!

We both had lobster rolls which we thoroughly enjoyed. The lobster itself was perfectly buttery and sweet. The roll was the exact same, complimenting the lobster nicely while leaving it as the highlight. Getting fries instead of chips was only a minimal upcharge and very worth it - their saltiness was a nice way to balance out the lobster roll. We parked conveniently and freely at the Battery Thompson.

We’ve loved this restaurant for years — it’s been one of our favorite local spots, not just for the excellent food, but for the way it always felt connected to the community. The new ownership and Chef Jason Stanhope are clearly bringing talent and vision to the table — the food is still fantastic and we’re excited to see where things go. That said, we are really disappointed that the beloved Monday night half-priced burgers and half-off bottle wine have been discontinued. For so many locals, that tradition was more than just a deal — it was a weekly ritual that made us feel seen and appreciated as regulars. It gave the place Sullivans Island heart and accessibility, and kept it from drifting into the “downtown Charleston exclusivity” zone. We hope the new team will consider bringing back some version of the Monday night local special — it was a smart and generous way to keep your loyal local base coming back, and feeling like we still have a seat at the table. Please don’t lose that connection in the pursuit of reinvention. We’ll be back — but we hope to feel the love back, too.

We celebrated our 42nd anniversary here, loved it! Food, service, atmosphere all were great! Staff was wonderful too! We started in the upstairs bar with a cocktail, live music and a fantastic view. Dinner was fabulous especially the soft shell crab. Love, love, love 💕

Over the years I have dined at the Boathouse more times than I can count. The Sunset views from the rooftop bar are beautiful, The ambiance of being surrounded by water so peaceful and so “vacation.” While the food has always been delicious, it was different at our last visit. We had dinner there the evening of September 11 and enjoyed what can only be described as a “dining experience” that we will be talking about from now on. The entire meal was just “over-the-top”. Our server was knowledgeable and attentive. Our party ordered 4 separate entrees and each was fabulous. And let’s talk about oysters. The Oysters Rockefeller were incredible!!! We ordered 1/2 dozen and then ordered another 1/2 dozen and probably would have ordered ANOTHER if we didn’t have entrees coming. Hands-down, the absolute best ever!! This restaurant has always been a favorite and continues to be!! They also have Valet parking so you don’t need to worry about finding a place to park. Highly recommend the Boathouse and it should definitely be a dining destination when on in and around IOP, Mt. Pleasant and Charleston !!

I've heard great things about this spot from long-time locals, and we had a lovely meal. Aside from our server not being attentive and messing some things up on our order, everything was terrific. We also had a reservation, but still had to wait over 30 minutes for our table. They have a small rooftop where you can get a drink or two before your table is ready. Vallet parking was a nice touch. It is priced on the higher end, but is an excellent spot for anniversaries or special occasions. I cannot say enough good things about their crab cakes. I was also impressed by their blue cheese coleslaw. Overall, you can't go wrong with anything on the menu here!

Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum, located in Charleston Harbor, is a must-visit destination for history enthusiasts. The museum features the USS YORKTOWN, a World War II aircraft carrier, along with a destroyer and submarine that visitors can explore year-round. Established by the Patriots Point Development Authority in the 1970s, this museum offers an immersive experience where visitors can learn about America's naval history, traditions, and core values.
We visited Patriots Place on a Sunday, which happened to be Father's Day! I was expecting large crowds, but it's so big with so much to see that it didn't feel crowded at all. The ship is amazing. There were lots of captain staircases involved. They do have an elevator if you can not do them. However, it is small. In the Medal of Honor exhibit, there were a lot of interactive things for kids, like seeing how cold their metal cups would get overnight, seeing if you could do pull-ups and how heavy a rucksack felt. Off the boat, we saw two dolphins playing in the water, which enhanced the trip. My favorite part was surely the Vietnam War experience. Make sure you follow the wooden boardwalk and go into all the trailers to watch the videos (even kids will like them, i promise). I loved the hologram soldiers and how the trailer vibrated during the realistic war scenes. Staff were all helpful and friendly. They have plenty of bathrooms available on the main floor of the ship and some outside the gift shop. I was not prepared for the parking to be prepared, which I was a little disappointed by, but still a great trip nonetheless.

I had a great time exploring the U.S.S. Yorktown! I decided to add the Captain’s Tour to my tour experience and it was well worth it. My tour guide, Dan Bommarito, did a fantastic job making the tour entertaining, enlightening and all around more enjoyable for everyone in the group. As a marine, it was great to hear about the history of the ship from the perspective of a fellow Devil Dog. I look forward to taking my kids next time I go!
Josh S — Google review
We visited both the Yorktown and the fort Sumter exhibits during our 1-day visit. It is reasonable to visit both in the same day if you get an early start, like by 10am. The ferry took us to Ft Sumpter and we stayed just about an hour there. At the fort there was no food drink or bathrooms, but the ferry had those on board. It was well worth the trip. After returning, we took in the Yorktown. It was well worth worth the 3 hours that we spent on board. We did not do a guided tour but we were able to see all the placards and got a good sense of the ship. Just be aware that there are a lot of steps/ ladders involved, but I think if you're reasonably able to negotiate them you would have a good time.

My two boys and I had an amazing time visiting Patriots Point. We spent hours exploring the USS Yorktown and the USS Laffey. It was incredible to walk the decks and learn about the ships’ history and the brave crews who served aboard them. The exhibits were both educational and engaging, and my kids were fascinated by all the interactive displays and aircraft. We also really enjoyed the Medal of Honor Museum. It was a powerful and inspiring experience that gave us a deeper appreciation for the heroes who have served our country. Overall, Patriots Point is a must-visit for families who love history and hands-on learning. It was the perfect mix of fun and education, and we’ll definitely be coming back!

A Great Family Outing! This is a fantastic place to visit with the family. Be prepared for plenty of walking and several steps throughout the ship — but that's all part of the experience. One highlight was the impressive Vietnam War dedication area, which was both educational and engaging for the kids. A meaningful and memorable visit for all ages!
Hannah H — Google review
This place was amazing! We took the ferry to Fort Sumtner and toured both the ships. My kids loved seeing the planes and helicopters on the air craft carrier. We spent about 4 hours total here and even saw some dolphins hanging out right next to the ships

A Must Visit Place in Charleston ! So many artifacts alongwith the history associated with it. Few points to note :- 1. Ready to climb so many stairs, so wear good shoes. 2. From ticket counter to Ship, you can get a free ride in shuttle service.
Ashish A — Google review
Patriots Point is a must-visit for anyone interested in American naval history. Anchored by the massive USS Yorktown (CV-10), the museum offers an immersive experience that’s both educational and deeply moving. Exploring the aircraft carrier—from its bridge to its hangars and flight deck—feels like stepping into living history. The collection of vintage aircraft, war rooms, and simulators is outstanding. Highlights include the USS Laffey, known as “The Ship That Would Not Die,” and the USS Clamagore submarine, each offering a unique glimpse into wartime life at sea. The exhibits are well-preserved, the setting dramatic, and the overall atmosphere powerful. Whether you’re a history buff or casual visitor, Patriots Point is an unforgettable experience that honors the service and sacrifice of America’s naval heroes.

Bridge
Sights & Landmarks
The Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge is a stunning architectural marvel that gracefully spans the Cooper River, linking Downtown Charleston to Mount Pleasant. Completed in 2005, this iconic cable-stayed bridge replaced older structures and boasts one of the longest main spans in the Western Hemisphere at an impressive 471 meters. Its striking triangular arches are beautifully illuminated at night, creating a picturesque scene for evening strolls or bike rides along its dedicated lanes.
My wife and i decided to walk across the bridge early Friday morning. What a fun and enjoyable walk. The temperature was a little cool in the morning but once we got our heart rate up we were fine. We were greeted by pretty much everyone we came across with much friendliness.

Beautiful designed bridge that connects Charleston to Mt. Pleasant. There’s a walk path that goes the length of the bridge. Best part is no toll.
Andrew I — Google review
Brilliant design which stands out in the distance of the Charleston skyline. However, what makes this bridge really unique is the public footpath for walking, running and cycling. Well worth a jog over.
Carlos U — Google review
I once drove our public school bus across the old Cooper River bridge to deposit it in Mount Pleasant for the summer, from Summerville - I was in the 11th grade! Times have changed, and so has the bridge. Both are beautiful in their own way!
Pastor D — Google review
An interesting and beautiful walk. For much of it, because you don't see the piers and you sense some movement due to traffic, it feels like you are walking on a floating concrete path.
Paul C — Google review
Nearing the end of a great cruise in the waters surrounding Charleston. The bridge stands out in stark contrast to this beautiful historic city.
Tim K — Google review
Great bridge walk, run, ride. Only entered from the north side. Lots of free parking underneath. Supposed to be walkers one one lane, bikes in other. Lots of people have problems with that concept.

Great experience to be at the top - center of the bridge. If you’re in Charleston, try hiking on the bridge, a great view of the peninsula up there

Mex 1 Coastal Cantina is a laid-back, surf-inspired restaurant on Sullivans Island that brings the bold flavors of Baja Mexican cuisine to the East Coast. The menu features fresh, locally sourced ingredients and smoked meats, offering a diverse selection of coastal and Mexican specialties such as tacos, quesadillas, Baja rice bowls, and Bangin' Shrimp. The cantina also serves signature margaritas made with 100% agave tequila and fresh squeezed juices.
These were the best tacos I had in a long time. Atmosphere is beautiful with a cute seating outside and inside. Waitresses are nice and food, once more, is amazing. Already planning to go again!

🌮 We’re locals and visit Max One often — the atmosphere is always casual and welcoming, and it’s usually a reliable go-to. On this visit, the place was pretty quiet, which made the experience a bit surprising. We ordered nachos, tacos, and a salad. The nachos looked great when they arrived but unfortunately were cold and barely had any cheese — just didn’t hit the mark this time. My kids love their tacos (just beef and cheese), and those were solid as usual. My salad, though, was completely forgotten and didn’t arrive until the very end of the meal. It was a simple salad with no protein, so it could’ve come out quickly. Service was also lacking a bit — my drink was never refilled, and I wasn’t even asked about it. That said, we know this spot can be hit or miss depending on the day, and we’ll definitely be back because options are limited on the island and it’s close to home. Hoping for a better experience next time — Max One has potential when everything is on point! If you’re looking for an island Tex-mex getaway, look no further. This place brings the vibes, the food, and fantastic service. Grab a Mex1 Margarita with house-made sour mix and lunazul tequila. Grande with salt. Splurge on the Nacho Mama’s shareable with ground beef. It will not disappoint. Relaxing on the front deck during sunset is the prettiest dinner you could ask for on Sullivan’s Island. I appreciate every dining experience we have there.

The place is cute our server was awesome but no wow factor the food was very hot and miss the queso was great the ships were very thin and kept breaking everytime we dipped one my mother got the steak quesadilla which was very dry and the steak was cut very thick for a quesadilla I got the burrito California removed the pico and guac and asked for the fry’s on the side but added beans and rice to the burrito which bad move again it was dry and all I could taste was the beans but again great atmosphere and great service

I was looking at this place a couple of years ago when we were on Sullivans Island and I’m glad we finally tried it. You have to try the Short rib taco, it came with pickled onions salsa verde and puréed carrots, which I had on the side. Wow it was good. I also had the Carne Asada taco With the chipotle mayo. Normally, I can’t stand chipotle but this was OK. The restaurant had a beachy Mexico vibe. The people were very nice and the food was so delicious. I just don’t think my words will do it justice. You would be mistaken not to try this place.

Mex 1 Cantina has such a cool beach vibe at the Sullivan’s Island location. The new culinary director, Ruddy, is bringing even more great flavor with some new menu items like tuna or short rib tacos and a Brussels sprouts appetizer. The outdoor covered dining area is awesome and there’s lots of space (and room to watch football games) inside. Parking can be a bit of a challenge but I love this spot!

Sullivan's Island Beach is a serene and spacious sandy beach located at the mouth of the Charleston Harbor. It is known for its quiet atmosphere, wooden boardwalk, and square-shaped lighthouse. The island has been cherished for generations, with historic gingerbread cottages adding to its charm.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Peaceful & Pristine Sullivan’s Island Beach! What a gem! Sullivan’s Island Beach quickly became one of our favorite beach spots since moving to the area. 🏖️ It’s beautifully maintained, clean, peaceful, and never overly crowded—exactly the kind of relaxing vibe we were looking for. There are no public restrooms, so plan accordingly, and definitely check ahead on their dog rules if you’re bringing your pup (they’re pretty specific depending on the time of year). Overall, a gorgeous beach with soft sand, calm waters, and just enough serenity to make you feel like you’ve found your own little slice of paradise. We’ll definitely be back! 🌊☀️🐾

Sullivan’s Island Beach is very quiet and peaceful, with beautiful views, a great spot to relax and enjoy the ocean. I had a really nice experience walking along the shore and taking in the scenery. The only thing I noticed is that I didn’t see any public showers, which could be a small inconvenience after spending time on the beach. Overall, though, it’s a lovely and calm beach to visit.
Kiana T — Google review
This is a beautiful beach, but they are not prepared for the traffic. Its two lanes in, two lanes out. I left the beach at 2pm in order to not get caught up in traffic. I wanted to be off the Island before sunset, if you are a minority I would encourage you to do the same. It gave me sundown town vibes unfortunately. All in all it was like being on Martha's Vineyard beautiful and quiet.

My favorite beach to visit after living in South Carolina for three years now. Parking is a challenge since you typically have to drive along the adjacent roads until a spot opens up, but I’ve personally never had to drive longer than about 15 minutes before finding a spot. At this time in the year, the shore is littered with dead jellyfish, but the big crowds with no sign of jellyfish injuries put me and the kids at ease.
Leonard J — Google review
Nice beach but it’s a trek to get out to, limited on the street parking, never could find a real parking lot. The access we went through felt like we were walking on private property it lead to a long board walk that went to the beach.

Home Team BBQ is a popular spot with a coastal vibe and fantastic barbecue. It's the perfect place to savor smoked meats like ribs, brisket, pulled pork, and sausage along with savory sides and cold beer. Locals also rave about their delicious drinks, especially the Game Changer cocktail. The restaurant offers a laid-back atmosphere where you can enjoy Fiery Ron's smoked chicken wings, pulled pork sandwiches, and tacos for an authentic local experience.

7/14/2025 stopped here for dinner. I ordered the half rack of ribs, collard greens, cheese dip, mac n cheese, and banana pudding for dessert. We sat outside because it was so nice out. The food was great, the ribs weren't my favorite but still good. The sides were phenomenal! The banana pudding was delicious too! I would recommend stopping here for lunch or dinner!!

Home Team BBQ – Sullivan’s Island This place is the perfect beach spot! It’s just a short walk from the sand, which makes it ideal for grabbing food or drinks right after the beach. The vibe is casual, fun, and super welcoming. You have to try their frozen Game Changer — it’s insanely refreshing and totally lives up to the name. It’s the first thing I order every time I go, especially after a hot day outside. The food here is consistently amazing. My favorites are the fried ribs (crispy and packed with flavor) and the pulled pork — it’s always juicy, smoky, and perfectly seasoned. Whether I’m stopping in with friends or bringing out-of-town guests, it’s a winner every time. Home Team never misses. Great food, great drinks, and an unbeatable location. Highly recommend!

Holy cow! This was so delicious! I had the three meat plate with ribs, pulled pork and brisket. So delicious! I really appreciate the dry rub and that you can put your own sauce on. Everything was juicy and tender. My sides were potato salad and cole slaw and they were perfect as well. Both were wonderfully seasoned for me. Parking stinks, so be prepared to walk a little bit. And I'm not a fan of the red table lights as they make everything look bland. I had leftovers and the next day it was amazing again!! I would highly recommend this place.

A shore adjacent BBQ restaurant. They're deep fry ribs a pretty interesting and I was very impressed. The pepper jelly that went along with it was very good. The white sauce which is essentially mayonnaise and brisket rub that was served on them was really good. They have a nice local beer selection and a bevy of sports on every TV.

Great time! We went around 8:30 and got two full racks of ribs, 1/4 chicken, brisket, and pulled pork and it was perfect for 6 people! Hot Sauce and Sweet Red were the favorite sauces. Was about ~$35 a person with drinks and nachos. We did the platters with the sides, would recommend the beans and the potato salad. We had a celiac and vegetarian and were well accommodated. Waiter was amazing and it was the best dinner we’ve had on our vacation! Never got his name but know he was born in Texas and worked there for 9 years! Warning: later in the night they could run out of mac and cheese and some meat cuts so don’t go too late! kitchen closes at 10!

Our first time at High Thyme certainly did not disappoint! From the second we entered the door we were greeted with the most fabulous smile and warm welcome. We had to wait a little but were seated at the bar and the bartender suggested the best bottle of wine! The appetizer special was out of this world. And the famous lasagna was perfection. My family and I dined at High Thyme for dinner last night and everything was amazing! Shout out to Emily and our server, Savanna for being so nice and engaging! We started off with a soft shell crab over grits for our appetizers and wow, what a great choice! It was so fresh and tasted delicious through and through. For our entrees we had the tuna romaine salad, the lamb meatloaf with potatoes, the bone in pork chop with fingerling potatoes and the lasagna. We all loved everything on our plates and each other's plates! This was not our first time here and definitely will not be our last. Thank you High Thyme for a wonderful dinner that brought smiles to all of our faces!

Food: We had the world famous Seared Scallops and Italian Sausage Ditalini…absolutely cooked to perfection and good tasting. VERDICT: Guilty as sin for being next level good…Good food brings good people together.

Every once in a while you “find” a great place that has been right in front of you all along. High Thyme is one of those places! We came in for dinner for the first time recently and were blown away and couldn’t believe it has been an option for us for so many years and we just have been missing out. The food was incredible, portions generous, service friendly and knowledgeable and the wine was very reasonably priced with great selection. We arrived right at 5 and the dining area had plenty of tables available but it appeared as though the bar may have opened up a bit earlier because every stool was already filled. By 5:30 the dining room was also packed (this was a Saturday night in between Christmas and New Year’s for reference). All in all we are thrilled to find another great spot on Sullivan’s and can’t wait to go back. Definitely aspiring regulars.

Always in my top 5 in Charleston at any moment. The absolute best staff, best service and consistently good food. This is a great place. If you have a crowd with varied taste, there are beef, options, seafood options, and pasta. The menu is small and changes fairly often and I can’t recommend the specials enough. The cauliflower dip is absolutely to die for, and they are seared tuna, the appetizer, or the entrée is incredible. The dishes are always creative, the ingredients are fresh, and it’s always just an overall wonderful dining experience.

Sushi restaurant
Located in a retail area off Ann Knapp Drive in Mt. Pleasant, Locals Sushi & Sports Pub is a laid-back hangout known for its sushi and late-night entertainment. In addition to sushi, they offer tacos such as the Caribbean Jerk Pork Taco and the Hangover Taco with sweet potato chorizo hash. The bar features a diverse cocktail menu, an extensive beer collection, and offers three-dollar wells during happy hour on weekdays from 4 pm to 7:30 pm.
Went here for their 1/2 off sushi rolls while my family was in town. Food was delicious, service was great. Place was a little small but they did a great job with fitting as many tables as possible. We will definitely be back.

If you're in Mt. Pleasant, SC and looking for a place that perfectly blends fresh sushi with a fun, laid-back sports bar atmosphere, Local Sushi and Sports Pub is a must-visit! From the moment we walked in, the staff made us feel like regulars—genuinely welcoming, upbeat, and attentive throughout the entire visit. Their service was top-tier without being overbearing, striking that perfect balance that makes a meal truly enjoyable. Now let's talk about the sushi—spectacular is an understatement. Every roll was beautifully presented, incredibly fresh, and bursting with flavor. You can tell the chefs take pride in both their craft and the quality of their ingredients. The specialty rolls were creative and unique, offering a twist on traditional favorites while still delivering on taste. Whether you're there to catch the game on one of their many TVs or to indulge in high-quality sushi with friends, Local Sushi and Sports Pub delivers. We’ll absolutely be back!

Really good appetizers and sushi. We had chips and queso, edamame and crab wontons. Spicy tuna and salmon rolls for our entree and a burger which was really really good. The beef was wellwell seasoned and the fries are coated to provide extra crunch. Excellent experience.

Locals in Mt. pleasant is the best location of all of them in my opinion. Although they are usually very busy, especially on the half sushi rolls day, they have a lot of indoor and offer outdoor seating. I also like that they have live music playing on Monday nights. We were able to snag a couple seats in the back and avoid the wait. They don’t take reservations so you want to get there at a decent time on Mondays. My husband is gluten-free and he was able to order off of their gluten-free menu, which was really nice. The sushi here is pretty good quality, and we love to come here on Monday nights. We inhaled our sushi rolls so I forgot to take any photos 😆 but I love the spicy salmon, mt. Pleasant roll and eel roll.
Nina C — Google review
Great food and our server was wonderful. It is a bar so the tables are close together and there's a lot of noise, just be mindful of that when choosing this restaurant. All of the sushi was very fresh and flavorful and everyone was happy with their food. 10/10 would return
Lynsie S — Google review
Experience was great! Definitely a great spot to go after work and have a good meal.
Anastasia A — Google review
My rating is solely based on my experience today and not my overall experience with the restaurant. Otherwise I would give it 5⭐️ This is a very interesting place because as a person that loves sushi, the sushi is very great and the bartenders can really make or break your experience at any place. No different here. This was my third time experiencing this place. Second time at this location and on August 4 during happy hour it showed me why I only go to certain places when certain bartenders are working. The bartender this day was completely standoffish. Gave more attention to the hosts than me. He would yell across the bar at the hostess which is always a turnoff to meet at bars. He was very short and clearly didn’t want to converse more than taking my order which is always a deciding factor in frequently a certain bar, especially when certain people are or aren’t working. While the food and drinks have been good on each of my visits, not all bartenders are good at their job and I would never come back to this location when the bartenders that were working today are there.

SC Crunch roll . 10/10 . Came a little before noon and wasn’t busy. Was torn between two rolls and ended up with the SC crunch (will come back for local lovers) and it was incredible. $14 for the roll.

Sullivan's Island Lighthouse, located in the Fort Moultrie unit of Fort Sumter National Monument, is a historic landmark that has been guiding mariners into Charleston Harbor since its construction in 1862. This 85-foot tower, with a unique triangular shape resembling a tapered cone, stands as an assurance and symbol of guidance for generations. Although it does not offer indoor tours or visits, the lighthouse's distinctive architectural design makes it resistant to gales and hurricanes.
It's getting old, but it's still there! I loved being able to see it from the waterfront in Charleston! This lighthouse has been a symbol of the beach to me for decades and I love it. It's not the most beautiful but it's my favorite. For anyone wondering- can just look, no going inside or anything. There are several signs that talk about the history of the lighthouse and how it was built if you're interested in that.
Julie T — Google review
The Sullivan's Island Lighthouse, also commonly known as "Charleston Light" holds a unique title in Carolina Lighthouse lore as one of the most modern lighthouses in the country. The distinctive triangular and slim structure, The lighthouse itself is fenced off and is not open to the public, however, visitors are welcome to explore the surrounding grounds during the day to snap photos, and look up and admire the towering structure. It continues to act as a guiding point to Charleston Harbor ships, Atlantic vessels passing along the coast, and visitors who want to light the way for a great vacation. PS: there is no parking space, you just park on the side of the street and hope you won't get a ticket...

It is so beautiful here... All the beaches in Charleston are just dreamlike. It's my absolute favorite place to be. The area we stopped at, there is a long bridge you have to walk to in order to get there so be aware of how much you bring. There isn't a lot of close parking so be aware of that as well.
Randi R — Google review
Love this place and you can access the beach right here! Quiet beach, perfect to bring the kids!!!

As far as light houses go, it wasn't much to look at. Kind of utilitarian. The beach next to it was fantastic. Beautiful, clean , light waves.

We went in at entrance number 22. Such a beautiful place. Love all the dogs. Beach was so clean. I really enjoyed all the butterflies that were flying around us. I don't know if they're here all the time, but wow! They followed us. I was in awe.

Pretty cool, not the prettiest lighthouse I've seen but still...would be even cooler if we could have seen inside.

Decent area to visit including the beach nearby. Parking was somewhat difficult (seems to be mostly street parking). Light house was not spectacular and seems more modern. Recommend going to the beach and looking at it there.

Library
The Edgar Allan Poe Library, located on Sullivans Island, is a unique attraction housed in a renovated four-gun battery from the Spanish-American War. Named after the renowned American poet who was stationed on the island as a private in the 1820s, this library moved to its current location in 1977. The island's connection to Poe's famous story 'The Gold Bug' makes it fitting that his namesake library is situated within Battery Gadsden.
This is a library located on Sullivan's Island next to the lighthouse. The library has captured the essence of E.A. Poe, like an exhibit, as well as a library. This used to be fort back in the day, as you can see. Nice gound to walk around and get that homework done and head to the beach. Staff was excellent and very knowledgeable.

Very cool 📚 library that is uniquely located in renovated Battery Gadsden, a Spanish-American War four-gun battery. The library is named for author Edgar Allan Poe, who was stationed on Sullivan's Island as a private in the United States Army in 1827 and 1828, and who used the island setting as the background for his famous story, "The Gold Bug." They have wonderful books and kids programs along with ♿ handicap accessible parking and restrooms.

Such a cool library. What was once a battery for a fort is now a cozy library. Perfect ambiance to get the creative juices flowing or find a small nook to read in. Staff is very friendly and helpful in finding anything you need.

I absolutely loved visiting this little library. I brought with me a discarded library book from my hometown's library. It is a paperback of some of Edgar Allan Poe's works. I'll add some pics here once I'm back from my trip.

The Co-Op Frosé & Eatery is a charming market and deli located in Sullivan's Island, SC. This cozy spot offers a variety of treats including coffee, gourmet sandwiches, wine, and craft beers. It's the perfect place to grab a morning bite or enjoy a leisurely brunch before 11 am. With its inviting atmosphere and delicious offerings, it's definitely worth a visit for anyone looking for a delightful dining experience on the island.
First visit to The Co-Op. it just so happened to be the day for the Polar Plunge so it was busy. I found a seat while my husband ordered two coffees, a salad with just about everything you can imagine & a sandwich with salmon, we requested a bagel instead of the Kaiser roll. We were starving & devoured it all! No complaints. Tasty food, nice people & atmosphere. Enjoy! Josephine Local Guide

The Co-Op is a quick little stop-in sandwich shop and a great feature of Sullivan’s Island. I think I ordered a California Turkey and I really enjoyed it! The sauce on the sandwich was especially delicious. There are a couple of indoor tables to eat at and the service is pretty quick. The only downside was that I couldn’t find a lot of convenient parking.

The Hungry Detective and Special Agent Deirdre AKA: The Queen Bee Keeper of Sullivans Island had the best SUP, bike ride and home grown sandwiches and Frose at the Co-Op on Sullivan’s!!! Atmosphere: I love pink and so does the owner obviously with awesome “Don’t be an asshole” T-shirts and of course there is some pink ones… Food: Next level sandwiches and outside the box drinks…pickle beer traveler for the beach is a must!!! VERDICT: Guilty as charged for having the right vibe and food to back it up!!! This place rocks and is so unique…”Shake it off and check it out before a day at the beach or in the morning for an awesome cup of joe☕️☕️☕️

First visit. For breakfast sandwich and coffee. I wasn’t vowed but I have heard great things about this place so I will be back again to try more things. I had the avocado toast and it was just ok.

We got the frose frozen wine that was definitely worth the $14 price. I assumed it was a scam and I was wrong. Got them to go and enjoyed them watching the sunset. They’re delicious well balanced and were a total vibe. I lived in Charleston for 10 years and love to come back to visit but with all the changes you’ll find 1 out of 10 great places and this is one of them.

Jess and all supporting staff are amazing. Customer service is excellent and if a mistake is (rarely) made they go above and beyond to fix it! Nestled beneath The Obstinate Daughter on Sullivan's Island, Beardcat's Sweet Shop is a charming haven for dessert lovers and beachgoers alike. This delightful shop offers an impressive selection of 20 gelato flavors, alongside sundaes, cakes, milkshakes, seasonal floats, and ice cream sandwiches that are perfect for cooling off after a day in the sun.
I love Gelato, and this place has legit Gelato. Perfect dessert after going to the Obstinate Daughter. My personal favorite was the pistachio gelato and my wife really likes the coffee gelato. They also sell shirts, mugs, and cookies and noodles that you can take home to bake and cook. Really cool spot.

Vegan options! Chocolate and coconut sorbet were delicious! Got a oatmilk iced latte and it was one of the best i had in a long time!
Katrina J — Google review
The most important thing to say about Beardcat's is that they have, hands down, the best gelato in the area. It's creamy, light and delicious. The pistachio is refreshingly natural with real nuts (not extract) and no crazy coloring. The other flavors are very good. We've found our new gelato place.
Alexandra J — Google review
The staff are super friendly. I ended up getting the pistachio and the blueberry lemon. The pistachio was rich and nutty. The blueberry lime was the star of the show though. It was a little tart, fruity, and so so refreshing. Every spoonful was so lovely to eat in the 90 something degree temperature.
Henry S — Google review
The gelato was so good that it made me emotional. This was the best pistachio gelato I have had outside of Italy. I will be thinking about it until the next time I visit Charleston and am reunited. The Biscoff almond was also delicious. It was so hard to pick a second flavor because all the ones I sampled were phenomenal. Also, the logo!!! A burly beard with a kitty cat in it, absolute perfection.

Every time we visit Sullivan’s Island, we have to stop by this ice cream shop! The pistachio and salt-olive flavors are truly unique and absolutely delicious. My daughter gets super excited every time she hears we’re coming here for ice cream. Cute little shop, ocean breeze, and a scoop of joy — it’s the perfect summer treat!

POTTY TALK: Clean, air conditioned bathrooms located on the bottom portion of the town hall (outside, lower level). BEST TIP: I wouldn’t make a trip to Sullivan’s Island just to go to this playground. It could be good if you’re trying to get that last bit of sand off your kids after the beach or wanting to wear them out before/after eating at the restaurants that are within walking distance. ⭐️ a variety of toddler friendly playground equipment (even an area for big kids) ⭐️clean restroom close by ⭐️beautiful oak trees with some shade (entire playground is not shaded) ⭐️fenced in toddler area ⭐️pretty gazebo ⭐️ large field to play + tennis and basketball courts 🌶 wood chips 🌶no-see-ums were horrible when we went 🌶the little house was kind of sketchy inside and had trash (that we put in the trash can) // just check it out before your toddler does • kinda like a big splinter to me tbh

If you're looking for ice cream or gelato on Sullivans Island, check out Republic Ice Cream. This shop, along with Beardcats Sweet Shop, is centrally located on Middle Street and a short walk from the beach access points. Republic Ice Cream offers not only delicious ice cream but also milkshakes and coffee. It's a bit expensive but definitely worth it. They have gluten-free cones for those with celiac and a wide variety of ice cream choices.
Find the ice cream shop on Sullivans. They have a downtown location as well but I’ve never been because Sullivan’s better anyway I walked in. She was making fresh waffle cones and just smelled so good ice cream is delicious and people are nice and I guess said the smells are amazing. It’s not cheapest but the quality more than makes up for it I would recommend this place to anybody that wants to get ice cream. That’s always OK.!!!!

Small town ice cream shop in a charming old house. They had several different flavors outside the norm. It struck me as odd when ordering and the young man’s response was “You’d better try it first” and gave us samples. Both the Banana pudding and the Raspberry both did taste odd. We ended up with Triple Berry, Chocolate and Mint Chocolate Chip and they were all good. Sorry no ice cream pics.

I’m an ice cream girlie and this adorable shop hit the spot! It has an old school vibe which you can tell was expertly curated. The owner was super friendly and encouraged me to try a few flavor profiles before deciding which were all tasty. I’m a purest at heart so went with the chocolate ice cream in a waffle cone. The waffle cone had a lovely hint of cinnamon and a great bite. They have a cute sitting area on the porch so you can enjoy with family and friends.

If you're vacationing or a local, this ice cream spot is a must-visit! They serve generous, oversized scoops on delicious waffle cones—pure bliss. Plus, everything is gluten-free, which was a delightful surprise for both me and my daughter. I indulged in a milkshake blended with coffee, and it was simply perfect. Heartfelt thanks to the staff! We can’t wait to come back for more.

The shoppe itself is very cool. I like that they kept the original doors, windows, and interior intact. The ice cream was pretty good. My daughter loved her waffle cone. Prices are high but it’s the beach so 🤷🏻‍♂️ you know what you are getting into when you go. The employees were friendly. Parking is extremely limited so you might be walking.

Great service (ask for Byron)! Very creative choices for tacos. I had Memphis and Royale varieties, both were fantastic. Daughter and wife loved the quesadilla and parents shared the nachos and said they were delicious. Can get crowded at dinner but worth it.

It was pretty good except a few things. One person in our family absolutely hates feta cheese so we always tell people to not put that on. When his taco arrived it had feta cheese. Then we ordered a taco with just chicken on it. When it came it had everything on it. My chicken taco was ok. I would not come here based on my experience.

The queso is just Velveeta, and you could make better tacos at home. But, the servers are fast and friendly. And they allow dogs on the patio. So, in my opinion, it's an OK place to visit if you're hungry after visiting the beach with your furry friend.

I had the Gyro and the Royale, with Mexican street corn, all were fantastic! Wife loved her Shrimp and the Blackened Fish and loved them. Kids had nachos and quesadillas and the picky one even ate all of her food! Wasn't too sure, but definitely a great place!

No free chips like every other Mexican restaurant on the planet. Our server was more interested in chatting with his co workers than our table so I had to get up and interrupt him several times. Food was ok but wait staff needs to be replaced. Such a great location to be such a disappointment.

Been here several times. Elvis and Camino margs are both very yummy. Tacos are decent sized and well done. Ordered the chips and queso, needed additional chips to finish it all it was so good.

No complimentary chips and salsa. Not authentic Peruvian food. The following we're bland: charro beans, carnitas taco, tacos royale, Verde salsa. The chorizo crumbles on the taco royale were good. $9.00 for two tacos one side sounds good but the sides are very tiny and bland. Waited for Water refills for the entirety of the meal. Day 4

Off the beaten path
For day 4, if you don’t mind the extra trek, today covers more off the beaten path places like Thomson Park. Not quite as popular as Fort Moultrie, but still highly rated among many travelers. Accounting for getting around and average time spent, today’s activities could take about 6 hours.

Park
Thomson Park is a charming little interpretive park that serves as a tribute to the historic Battle of Sullivan's Island during the Revolutionary War. Established in 2011 by local enthusiasts, this park highlights the bravery of Colonel William Danger Thomson and his 435 soldiers who successfully defended Fort Sullivan against British forces. Visitors can explore informative wayside exhibits that narrate this significant chapter in history. The park also features a serene stretch of beach, perfect for those seeking tranquility away from crowded tourist spots.
LOVE! Beautiful place for pictures! Lots of crabs and great shells. Amazing place to sit and watch the ocean without having to run through a lot of sand.
Christina R — Google review
This is a very low-key beach. Not good for swimming as the rip currents are strong here. There are warning signs and says its a 1000$ fine. The parking lot is small and can get filled up quickly on weekends. There are a few benches to sit and relax, and watch the waves. Nothing much to see here except for crabs and some birds. But the beach is really clean.
Ajimon T — Google review
The park is located on the side of the highway on our way home when we travel to Charleston near Mt Pleasant. I love the view of the water and beach along with dolphins swimming in the channel . It's always a great way to relax and unwind . There's adequate free parking and a few benches nearby to enjoy the views or an entire stretch of beach to sit and enjoy nature. On today's visit, 4/30/25, I was shocked and disheartened to see the towering sand piles the no longer allow you to sit and enjoy the view of the water and dolphins. Literally all you could see was sand and more sand. Truly a sad day for a beautiful little park.
Karen W — Google review
I used to come out here often. There’s a small stretch of beach that you can walk on peacefully as there is not that many people that come to on this side. Mostly locals. They come out, sit and enjoy the beautiful sunrises. I saw a group of older men just sitting there in the grassy area talking. I saw only one accessible parking spot. There could’ve been more I just didn’t see them. Very kid friendly.
Toni ( — Google review
Previously, you could see the ocean from here, and it was beautiful. Since then, they had the gun some dredging and placed mountains of sand in front of the parking lot. It completely obstruct the view, but kids love sliding and rolling off it. Adults – not so much
Bob C — Google review
Great spot to sit on the beach. NO SWIMMING!! Sign posted that you will be fined if you go in the water. Small parking lot so there may be no parking spots available when you arrive. Wonderful place to sit and feel wind on your face and listen to the waves.
Sj C — Google review
The parking here is moderately large across the street from the beach (that lot is super small). The beach on this side of the cut, terminal for Sullivan's island, is actually pretty small, and ends to the south-west with a jetty. You're better off crossing the bridge and going to Isle Of Palms if you want to walk up-down the beach.

Breach Inlet

Bay
Breach Inlet is a picturesque bay with deep waters and strong currents, offering a tranquil atmosphere. The area is renowned for its Southern cooking, drawing from traditional family recipes and local produce. The Boathouse, established in 1997, focuses on serving diverse and delicious seafood sourced from nearby rivers, lakes, and oceans. Overlooking Breach Inlet is the Boathouse's rooftop bar where dolphins are often spotted.
Right on the beach. Watch the ocean and waves, birds, boats, sandbar, people just loving life at the beach!!! It could use a bathroom and more parking coz it's very popular. I like that you don't have to park by someone's yard nor cross dunes to get to the water.

Nice spot for fishing located near Mt. Pleasant SC. Do not under any circumstances enter the water here as it is known for its lethal rip currents. Not a lot of parking

I SO enjoy fishing at Breech Inlet. I've caught many nice flounder, spot tails, whiting and trout there.

Great place to fish and relax. Beware of some rude boater who doesn't respect the fisherman from the bridge. This is nature meant to be used by all who purchased a State issued license. Public restrooms would be a plus.

Beautiful place on the inlet to take a walk or sit and take in the sunrise or sunset. If you get there at the right time you can find some nice sized shells in fairly good condition. Currents are strong, stay safe on shore.

Ben Sawyer Bridge

4.5
(53)
Bridge
Ben Sawyer Bridge, located in South Carolina, is a drawbridge that offers stunning views of the Intercoastal Waterway, Gold Bug Island, and Sullivans Island. It has a wide walk/bike path on one side and a semi-narrow raised walk/bike path on the same side of the bridge. The bridge is known for its swing mechanism which allows boats to pass through by turning on an axis.
Beautiful structure. It compliments the history of how bridges impact the city of Charleston. The engineering on this one is cutting edge. Cutting down costs while keeping the same efficiency is something people thought was impossible until this idea was brilliantly executed in perfect fashion.
- M — Google review
Great view of the geography when you are stuck with the bridge open. Great excuse for being late for whatever appointment you have. Everyone understands! Love the polychronic nature of being here in Charleston Area!
Chip P — Google review
One of South Carolina's drawbridges, this one is a swing bridge. There aren't too many of these, but I managed to see the Little River Swing Bridge near Myrtle Beach a few days ago. Where "leaf" or "bascule" bridges have a movable span that lifts, a swing bridge turns on an axis to clear the channel and allow boats to pass. It carries South Carolina 703 across the Sullivan's Island Narrows between Mount Pleasant and Sullivan's Island. Named after the Chief Highway Commissioner of the South Carolina Highway Department who served from 1926 to 1940, the bridge was originally constructed in 1945 and updated in 2010. The bridge is a single lane of traffic in each direction with a single pedestrian lane on the western side. There is no toll to cross the bridge.
Bruce K — Google review
Not a whole lot to see, but passing over the bridge or seeing it turn to let large boats pass is pretty neat.
Scott M — Google review
Nice causeway and draw-bridge with terrific view of Intercoastal Waterway, Gold Bug Island, Sullivans Island and sometimes some terrific boats going under the draw-bridge. Wide walk/bike path on one side of the causeway (heading towards Sullivans) and semi-narrow raised walk/bike path on same side of the bridge. Walkers should take a camera for the marsh and island views. Great place to spot seabirds as well: pelicans, heron, seagulls, etc. Bicycles have plenty of room on the causeway and are supposed to be walked across the raised path on the bridge, but some bikers try to ride on the path or the road. Riding on the road is very dangerous as there is a blind hill. Nice driving causeway and draw-bridge, but there is a blind spot at the top of the bridge, so obey speed limit - or go slower. The posted limit across the causeway is really too fast (45mph) and should be 35mph as it is a two-lane road with water/marsh on both sides. Visitors will want to slow down to enjoy the view. Locals should slow down to accommodate visitors (and enjoy the view as well!)
Margaret M — Google review
Beautiful swing bridge where you can see a crossing every few days. Lovely 360 views of Charleaton, Mr Pleasant and Sullivan's island.
Jordan B — Google review
This is a nice bridge, it's not as big as some others in the area but it still stands out.
Patamatic — Google review
The causeway is really nice and the bridge is a good walk as well but it has a narrow sidewalk. You can bike across but you have to be careful.

I’ve literally never written a review before, but I had to just because of how extremely genuine the staff was. I was buying a gift for someone and I asked them for their advice, and they were not only happy to help but took time to show me multiple different things which all seemed to be perfect. One of the better/best experiences I’ve had with shops like this in the area. Great staff, great inventory, I’d give them 6 stars if I could.

Whether you're gliding across the waves or exploring serene shorelines at your own pace, Sealand Adventure Sports has you covered.
Had an amazing experience taking Kite Boarding Lessons at Sealand Adventures. Denver was amazing to work with booking the lessons, extremely responsive, and did an awesome job getting us out there on a day with great weather and wind. Norm was a top notch instructor, had a ton of fun, and has me really wanting to pick up the sport. I will definitely be taking more lessons with them and using them for all my beach related rentals and lessons! Extremely happy I booked with Sealand!

Their Electric Bikes where amazing. We have rented e-bikes in several cities and these seem to be well maintained and very powerful. We rode for three hours and the battery level barely moved. The staff are friendly and very accommodating. The best way to view Isle of Palms and Sullivans Island for an up close look at some beautiful beach homes and scope out the best places to revisit for a drink or the best beach access.

I bought a foil from this store. The foil was not as advertised. I contacted the store and they were gentle and friendly to address the problem. We found a solution and the case was well managed. I can say I am a happy customer. I decided to buy here without previous experience with the business but based on my experience, I would recommend it.

It was a neat shop with a good vibe and knowledgeable staff that helped explain my options when looking for a wind shade. We had a family emergency and had to leave at 2am, but still had the shade we had rented. The shop was kind and understanding, giving me a few days to mail it back to them at no extra charge. I can't emphasize enough how much their kindness during such a stressful time meant!

Restaurant
The Longboard is a casual yet stylish restaurant located on Sullivan's Island, offering a breezy and refined atmosphere. The bar features teal barstools arranged around a surfboard centerpiece, and the menu highlights seafood dishes. Similar to Sullivan's Fish Camp, The Longboard offers brunch and lunch options on weekends. The brunch menu includes items such as ricotta toast with honey drizzle, tropical acai bowl, Caribbean chopped salad, and vegetable hash.
The food was delicious and the service even better! Our server, Brittney, was awesome and had great recommendations for our group. I had local oysters, pan seared scallops, and potatoes. She recommended great drinks as well. I would definitely come back the next time I am in the area! :)
Skylar R — Google review
Our food was great. The restaurant is five years old but looks like it was built last week.. the place is immaculate and so clean and well-kept. The manager, Mark, visited our table and made suggestions for the food and cocktails.. all food and drinks were amazing. Our server was attentive (forgot her name but I know it started with an R), and she was super nice. 10/10 on all counts.
Jeremy R — Google review
Stopped in for lunch before heading to the beach and it hit the mark perfectly. I went early enough to avoid the crowds, so no reservation was needed but I can definitely see this place filling up for dinner or weekend brunch, so plan ahead. They were running a special on bottles of wine, which made it easy to say yes. My partner had the broiled oysters and couldn’t stop talking about them. I ordered the street corn salad with chicken, and it was exactly what I needed fresh, filling, and flavorful. The space is well-designed with a breezy, coastal vibe that fits the location. Whether you’re fueling up before a beach day or winding down after one, The Longboard is worth a visit.
Javaughn S — Google review
Fun spot. We sat at the bar and had very nice service. Nice wine and cocktail choices. Menu had a lot of items that we wanted to order but for tonight we chose the charred Romain lettuce, the seared yellow fin tuna, and the pork chop. And to finish, the coconut crème brûlée and pain killer shots (because we saw people ordering them and they looked yummy!) Everything had great presentation and very nice flavors. The painkiller shots were as good as they looked. We were very happy! We will be back
Sabine M — Google review
The Longboard feels like it drifted in on a warm island breeze and decided to stay. The place has this relaxed, stylish energy that makes you settle in and enjoy yourself without even thinking about it. The menu is packed with fresh, bright flavors that taste like they were pulled straight from the water that morning, and every dish we tried was a hit. We loved it so much we went back again during our five day trip. The service matched the food and atmosphere, smooth and welcoming in a way that lifts the whole experience. This spot is easily our favorite in the Isle of Palms and Sullivans Island area. It has that rare mix of creativity and comfort that makes you feel lucky you found it.

Loved by entire family with teens. Two of us had tuna poke bowls (out of this work but tell them go lite on soy sauce and bring on side instead), seared yellow fin tuna and pad Thai chicken. Our favorite app out of 3 was the corn salad. Desserts a little disappointing, the coconut creme brulee was very dry oddly, the cookie skillet dessert was enjoyed. Would definitely go back!
Georgia C — Google review
I just had my first visit here. I sat at the bar and had Steve as my bartender. He was great! He made delicious drinks and he suggested the tuna wrap. I got it without the mango…. it was amazing!! I also had one of the mocktails with vodka, it was also delicious! I hope many people get the pleasure of having him as their bartender when they visit. He was so pleasant and made the experience there very enjoyable! I can’t wait to go back and try something new!

My partner and I went for oyster hour and really enjoyed it! He got the grilled oysters and I got the raw; both were well prepared and priced right. The cocktail and beer specials were great as well. The interior design is also elevated; it makes for a special experience even if you're visiting for a regular happy hour.

Dunleavy's Pub, located on Sullivan's Island, is a local favorite and a staple in the area. This family-owned Irish bar offers a cozy cabin-like atmosphere and hosts weekly live folk, country, and acoustic music performances. Known for its great tap selections including Irish beer, chargrilled wings, and classic Reuben sandwiches, it has been serving the community for over 30 years.
My friends and I had a great time at this Irish pub. The drinks were good but the star of the show was the food. We had the lemon pepper grilled wings and the sliders and both were fantastic. The wings had a great char and the burgers were seasoned to perfection. 10/10 recommend

This place was awesome! I walked in to cool off from a hot beach and was greeted with a very attentive and caring server. The owner, Jamie, took the time to talk to me and made me feel welcomed. It was easy to understand why there was a crowd on a Wednesday during the day. Looking for good food and even better people? Definitely the place!!

Not a bad place, But possibly the least-Irish Irish pub I’ve ever been to. The sports flair or whatever you call the decorations were a bit much, but the Harp beer was cold enough. If you’re coming from the beach, it’s not a bad place to stop.

I can’t hate for being a fighting Irish bar.. The Smithwicks was good. The popcorn is great. The Reuben was ok.. the Teriyaki wings were the worst wings I have ever had in my entire life. I have never not asked for a box for wings ever. They need pulled from the menu

This place is my favorite! I went all the way to Charleston to visit Dunleavy’s pub! Jamie was a great bartender! We had such a great conversation about our hometown West Haven! An incredibly jolly Irish Pub in Charleston SC. The atmosphere was great and the staff was wonderful. Waitress was so friendly and food came out extremely quick. We were there at about 7:30 am after watching the sunrise. We got the fresh fruit platter which was huge, the veggie omelette and the crab omelette. Both were delish! It comes with a biscuit and home fries and personally think the prices were reasonable. The shirts were $25 which is just cheaper than any souvenir shop! (And they’re cuter)

Here with a group of friends. My meal, the daily omelet special was fantastic. The biscuits were perfection. My one friend cannot eat gluten. She ordered her meal with no toast or biscuits. The waitress rolled her eyes at her. My friend didn’t explain that she would have loved a biscuit, but couldn’t eat it, and she knew what to order. Then we waited forever to get our meals. The home fries were under cooked. It was a real mix of great food with poor service.

My pup and I had brunch on the porch. The place was very busy, the food excellent (I had the crab omlette), and the service kind. It's cash only (which was fine by me!)... yawl, there's an ATM right outside for those unprepared!

Enjoyed the mermaid atmosphere. Had ham Eggs Benedict on the breakfast potatoes instead of the English Muffins. Busy, crowded so go early. Loved the vibe and the service! Only issue was we asked for a side of sausage gravy for hubby, so he could try it w his biscuit, the charge was 6.50!

Small cute little place somewhat near the beach. Luckily we got a table right away. Took a minute to get anyone to give us water or even acknowledge us to take our order but again small and packed so not a lot of room for too many wait staff. It was a pretty humid day when we were there and it was super hot inside, no air only fans but that's ok. Food was good. Homemade. Basic breakfast menu, eggs, bacon, pancakes, biscuits, etc. Everything was good. Food also came out fast. Just beware.... They only take cash.

The Hungry Detective and new sidekick had a fabulous experience at my old new favorite Italian spot in Charleston!!! The food: started with the grouper braciole served up super hot in a La Cruset covered mini pot. Main courses….The tile fish is five stars and the plate was clean…”better than sex” Wine: Michael selected a fabulous red from Sicily!!! VERDICT: I usually do not go out on a limb but Coda de Pesce goes above and beyond the call of duty and guilty as sin for doing everything to perfection!!! Note: Sit at the bar….Michael the bartender is a true professional and knows his stuff…great suggestions that were on point!!!

This was a great experience for my wife and I. The restaurant was so cute, and our service was very helpful. Never ate, server would not seat us tonight at all. Said they don’t do this today. No walk ins. We asked to sit at the bar and was told NO, we just opened can’t help you. Crappy customer service and poor attitude. My sister in law is handicapped and it took her a good bit to walk up the stairs, once we were turned away, she asked if she could stand for a minute to get some energy to walk down the stairs, the guy flat out said ,I dont care, but you’re not sitting here tonight.
Krysten W — Google review
We had high expectations based on reviews and descriptions. Unfortunately, our expectations were not met. Food was good, but not something what you have never tried as described in other reviews. It was also inconsistent. Even bread, when one order was great and another was mediocre. Besides, it was always a feeling that we have to finish as soon as possible since other customers are in line. My "favorite" part was that we were asked to place our order for appetizers and main dishes at the same time since it is "more convenient" for the chief...
Alexander S — Google review
Words cannot explain how good the food is here. I have been to many up scale restaurants in my life and this is easily #1 on my list. Chef Ken Vedrinski puts on an absolute experience. Also, the atmosphere is warm, comfortable, and welcoming. We will be back, already planning another date night. Thank you for making our Anniversary a memorable one.

While walking on the beach we noticed the tower of this church with a statue atop it, so we drove over to check it out. It was a weekday afternoon and there wasn't anything going on but the church was open. We went in and were surprised how nice it was inside. There was a plaque marking the height of the water, at least 3 feet, that had entered the church during a hurricane a couple of years prior. The church is still being restored.

The shop is highly recommended by locals for its beautiful clothing and decorating items. Out of Hand also features globally sourced pieces as well as local Charleston artisan goods, making it the perfect place to pick up a unique souvenir or treat yourself to a new outfit.
Out of Hand is selling the Irene Forte skincare line. It is beyond fabulous!!! I am in LOVE with the Hibiscus night cream moisturizer that I wear 24/7 and the Rose Face Oil. Run don't walk to the store and try it. You won't be disappointed. As a bonus, their customer service is exceptional!! Ask for Blair in the cosmetic department. She can help you decide what Irene Forte products are best for you!!

We purchased what we believed to be a beautiful antique hutch for $3,000 and arranged delivery through the shipping company regularly used and recommended by this store. Being new to town, we trusted their advice and went with their movers. On the scheduled delivery date, we were shocked to learn from the store’s own staff that their movers refused to handle the piece out of concern it would fall apart during transport. Instead of working toward a fair resolution, the store owner became defensive and insisted we still owned the item and that no refund would be given—even though her own team acknowledged the problem. We made a simple, reasonable request: either deliver the piece safely or issue a full store credit. Instead, the owner threatened to charge us a 25%+ restocking fee—on an item that never left her store. That makes absolutely no sense. Thankfully, because the purchase was made with my Apple Card, I was able to file a dispute to protect us from this unfair treatment. We truly love the store’s inventory and would have liked to continue shopping here, but after such an experience, I would urge others to be very cautious with larger purchases. Unreasonable!

Such a cute store! They have so many fun and unique items! And the staff is so welcoming and helpful! Would 100% recommend to anyone visiting or who have never stopped in before.

Walked in, was not greeted or welcomed in any way. I am a male and received a few weird glances as I perused the home goods section. After walking around the shoppe for about fifteen minutes without anyone checking in, I left. Upon reading other reviews, this seems to be a reoccurring theme with this shoppe. Based on the overwhelming inventory and lack of space inside, you would imagine they would want to make a sale or two…but I digress. King Street worked out just fine for me.

Non-existent customer service for online orders. My order shipped out days later than promised despite paying up-charge and shipping fee for item which was cheaper and free shipping via national retailer but I wanted to support small business. I still have not received and no one answers phone or has replied to my four emails.

I saw the store as I was leaving a residence and liked it’s look. I am not from mt pleasant but just wanted to check it out. Absolutely the most amazing stuff especially clothes and shoes and handbags and linens etc. I have not been shopping in many many years that I actually loved the style entirely. I’m someone who loves different unusual stylish and wow it’s on. I was so overwhelmed I decided to tone it down and just breath. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to afford many of the liked items but it is a super nice place and nice staff. I did buy something though as it’s a appreciation for it being there. Hope to go and shop there again one day.

I had visited the store for the first time a few weeks back with a group friends, it was such a pleasurable experience. It's hard to find a place that no matter someone's budget everyone can leave with a special purchase. The store is filled throughout with hidden treasures. I was excited to return today. The owner and her team are helpful, personable, knowledgeable and attentive. Knowing the store has so much to offer they allow their customers to take their time looking around or trying on clothes. They truly make you feel at home. I look forward to seeing them all again my next trip to town.

Today was my second time in this store. A few months ago I went in with a friend and not one person spoke to us or glanced in our direction. That's fine. Everybody has an off day and their clothes were very cute. We tried some on but they were out of our sizes that day. I spotted some glassware I loved. Today I went back and sadly, the glasses were gone. Nobody greeted me or spoke to me in the home store. We went to the clothing part and all I received were glares like I was a huge inconvenience walking in. There were at least 3 ladies working today if not more. Not one of them could muster up a "Welcome" or "How can I help you." Had anybody given me the time of day, I am certain we would have both walked away happy. I love to shop local but I am not willing to give my money to a shop that seems like the customer walking in is less than worthy of a glance. That will be the last time I walk in there.

The Refuge is a modern and vibrant eatery that transforms throughout the day, offering an array of menus to suit any schedule. During the day, it serves up top-notch coffee, breakfast pastries, and sandwiches. As evening falls, the ambiance shifts to offer signature drinks and delectable southern fare. The weekend brunch menu is a standout feature with mouthwatering dishes like baked avocado and egg or stuffed French toast.
We're from the Upstate of South Carolina. If you want real plates, real glass, and heavily poured wine, excellent service with a seriously local vibe, T H I S is your place. Jason the bartender has worked all aspects of the biz. The owner, Patty, is there to greet you and to make sure your visit is iconic. Treat yourself to this IOP best kept secret!

Took time in Refuge and tried their crab cake eggs Benedict and Maine cocktail, both of which were fantastic. The design and delivery of the food stood up to its flavor and It makes me want to come back for more. If you just need a coffee and some relaxation, there is an attached cafe that is quieter than the rest of the restaurant and easy to focus in. Fantastic spot!

My wife and I stopped by the Refuge Restaurant for brunch while waiting for an early check-in at our accommodations, and we enjoyed the experience! I ordered the western omelet with home fries, and it was perfectly cooked—fluffy, flavorful, and paired with crispy, well-seasoned fries. My wife got the berry pancakes, which were light, fluffy, and bursting with fresh berry goodness. We both thoroughly enjoyed our meals, and the warm, welcoming atmosphere made it even better. The service was top-notch, and we can’t wait to come back! Highly recommend!

I have eaten here several times and the food is consistently cooked very well. I have never eaten anything that I did not like or lacked flavor. My group and I started with the BLT Deviled Eggs, Burrata Caprese, and She Crab Soup, all of which were outstanding. I ordered the Seared Scallops with brussel sprouts, mixed vegetables and sweet potato puree. The scallops had a parmesean crust that was simply delicous and satifying, the brussel sprouts were crispy and the sweet potato puree was creamy. The presentation of the dish was stunning that gave you that fine dining experience. My friend had the Chicken Pesto Tortellini. The dish had a lemon pesto cream sauce that was excellent. We finished with a key lime pie that was light and refreshhing along with a gluten free carrot cake, that my friend said you could not tell it was gluten free, and yes it had a light cream cheese icing. The Refuge partners with a local bakery, so no packaged desserts. The service was awesome, our waiter was polite, friendly and attentive. He was very knowledgable about the menu and dishes. He gave his top 3 for appetizers, entrees, and desserts. He also guided my friend to gluten free options on the menu. Overall I would highly recommend The Refuge.

The Refuge gave us a good meal with food that really hit the spot. Service was friendly, just a bit overwhelmed at times. The atmosphere was fine, nothing too memorable, and the strip mall setting does not add much personality. Still, it is a solid place to eat on Isle of Palms if you want something reliable and tasty.

Thursday night dinner here was great. We got the crab dip and crab soup. Soup was good but the dip was incredible i highly recommend. Both entrees were great also. Seared scallops and a Thai coconut shrimp. We got the thyme in Maine as cocktails and honestly didn’t like them. The restaurant took them back and got us something else. Great food, service and the interior was very cool.

Super cute, clean, modern restaurant. Great service & food. Espresso martini was delicious! We ordered the She Crab Soup, fresh Lobster, crab cake (HUGE), and grilled shrimp (my son said it was his favorite he's ever had), Tuna TarTar with crispy wontons.. only complaint was the wontons were not crispy- more chewy, so we just ate the tuna without.

Dined at Refuge on 10/08. She-crab soup was outstanding. My wife had trigger fish and raved about it and the rice. I had shrimp and grits - the serving size was too large (I would offer a half size on the menu). Aside from the, it was excellent - grits were cooked perfectly, shrimp nicely seasoned, Tasso gravy was delicious. Waitstaff was attentive, drinks were great. Highly recommend!
