Botanical garden
Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden, also known as Pamplemousses Botanical Garden, is an 18th-century garden in Mauritius with over 500 plant species. Originally established as a vegetable garden in 1735, it has expanded to become a vast showcase of tropical vegetation. The highlights include giant Victoria amazonica water lilies and soulful giant tortoises.
We spent 2 hours at the park and covered most things. A variety of beautiful flowers, plants and trees. Map of the gardens is clear and easy to follow. There are some deers and tortoise as well. Worth visiting and it is free.

Good place for a little 2 hour trip when you're in north Mauritius anyway. The park is big, but not huge and some areas could be kept a little better. Overall, it looks very nice and there's a lot of very impressive flora to see. We VERY much disliked the animal enclosures. The deer and tortoise very obviously were put in way to small areas and didn't enjoy their life. For us, the botanical garden would have sufficed without animal cruelty on display. For the price per person it's absolutely fine for a nice walk and to take some pictures.
Tom — Google review
We spent a good 3 hrs in the park. Entrance fee was reasonable. We had a free map at the ticket office which was useful as the park is quite large and we don’t wanted to miss anything. We enjoyed everything what we seen. Some of the ponds were drained, out of use unfortunately. Also the water plant fountain was empty as well just an alga filled mess. Turtles have quite large enclosure and it seems they are happy there. Deers have a similarly sized enclosure but in my opinion is not well planned. The animals do not have natural shade and all of them were cramped together under the feeding spot trying to hide from the sun. The highlight if our visit were the water lilies in full bloom. And the hut on the largest pond. Also the two large bridge in the valley area. The medicine garden was interesting but many of the plants were missing and not replaced. Considering that this was a botanic garden there were no flowers or shrubs or other plants than different palm species and trees. But I think it still wort a visit. Take water with you because it is still warm even when it is a bit cloudy. In the carpark you can buy refreshment but not in the park. Also you can buy souvenirs in the carpark. We also visited the nearby sugar museum. Thats was nice too and finished our day in the shopping centre next to the museum. Whole day was great. ❤️
Gyongyver R — Google review
Best botanical garden I’ve ever been. There’s so much to see, the ticket price was reasonable. There were tour guides at the entrance, although we decided to go on our own. The map is quite straight-forward as all "roads" are labeled. Take your time, 2-3 hours should be enough.
Daniella T — Google review
SSR Botanical Garden is a calm and beautiful place to visit. The garden has many trees, flowers, and the famous giant water lilies. You can also see animals like deer, turtles, fish, and birds. It is a great place to walk, relax, and enjoy nature with family. A very peaceful and refreshing spot!
Djameel H — Google review
Very nice garden. Very informative and entertaining guided tours through the park. For the guide we paid 75 MUR per person in 2025. Not expensive. Downside is the very small area for the turtles.
Volker K — Google review
We had a wonderful tour with our guide Patrick from Soleis. You can pay extra for the Botanical garden guides. Patrick took us around and shared his knowledge with us. It was a lovely way to end the day's activities.
Babitseng M — Google review
What a fantastic return to the SSR Botanical Garden after being away for over a decade! Experiencing this lush greenery again was a perfect welcome back to Mauritius. The garden is truly a wonderful place to visit, offering a serene and beautiful environment ideal for exercise and reconnecting with nature. I highly recommend it for a Sunday morning jog—the quiet atmosphere early in the day makes for a very relaxing and refreshing run amidst the exotic trees and flora. A note for fellow Mauritians: Entry is FREE for citizens on Sundays and Public Holidays, which is a brilliant initiative and a great way to start the weekend. While the garden is generally kept clean, there is definitely room for improvement in some areas. A bit more attention to maintenance would elevate the experience even further. Overall, it's a lovely way to enjoy nature, get some exercise, and appreciate the stunning biodiversity of the island. Definitely worth the visit!

St Francois D'Assise Church

Catholic church
Nestled just across from the grand gates, St Francois D'Assise Church stands as one of the oldest churches on the island, dating back to 1756. This historic stone structure not only showcases remarkable architectural beauty but also serves as a significant cultural landmark where local legends like Paul and Virginie once met. The church is surrounded by a serene cemetery, tended by Raymond, its dedicated guardian angel for over 74 years.
This church is a magnificent building and it is really massive. It is the oldest catholic church in Mauritius. You can park nearby on the streets and the church is open for visitors, follow the blue signs to the entrance gate. There is a beautiful statue of Paul and Virginie who are buried here in the story.

There is also a graveyard opposite the church which is spooky a little bit but it's okay really its just Graves right. If you're exploring the culinary scene in Mauritius, Camaron Rouge is a must-visit destination that captures the essence of local flavors. This charming restaurant offers an array of authentic Mauritian dishes, all beautifully presented and bursting with taste. The ambiance is inviting, featuring a clean and spacious setting that enhances your dining experience. The staff at Camaron Rouge are not only prompt but also incredibly helpful, ready to guide you through their menu if you're unsure what to choose.
Definitely one of my favourite restaurants I’ve eaten at while staying in the north/ Mon Choisy area. All the seafood is super fresh and cooked perfectly with amazing local creole sauces and influences. Me and three other friends went for some appetizers and two seafood platters (which were massive and barely able to finish!) Overall we had a great meal and the staff were super kind considering we stopped by relatively close to closing time. Definitely a must visit if you’re in the area!

Such a cosy place! Seven of us came in after a day on the beach and the lady serving us was so kind and hospitable, as well as that the food was brilliant and felt like it was made with love. We ordered some chicken, beef and lamb and for a seafood restaurant, we were pleasantly surprised! I definitely recommend this place if you are visiting Mauritius

If there's any local restaurant to visit in Mauritius, this is it. Beni restaurant offers the best, well made varieties of local Mauritian Dish. Really tasty, well presented and gives you the local dishes just as it is. Amazing. Lovely ambience, the restaurant is neat, well ventilated and quite spacious. The staff member are prompt, helpful and always willing to recommend good meal options if you ever get stuck. The good part is that's the dishes are moderately priced and pocket friendly.
Abimbola O — Google review
An absolute tourist trap. For the price it is below par. The beer was warm and the beautiful tiger prawns very over cooked. The prawns were presented well it was a shame. The wait staff have a menu to push and are good at the oversell.

Went here a few months ago, super nice staff and great service. They even gave us free homemade icecream for dessert. The seafood was amazing, especially the lobster and the gratain starters! Make a visit if you can!!!!

They charged more than many fancy restaurants. It’s a trap, don’t go there. You are using wrong tricks, dear owners. Instead of making us come back, you just charged so much that we would never return and you get yourself a bad review.

Cuisine is good. Some dishes are really successful. The grilled fish is ordinary. But the prices are too high for such a place that is definately tourist oriented. And what is really strange they do not accept credit cards. But everything including the toilets is clean.

Seafood restaurant
L'Ocean is a highly recommended seafood restaurant with phenomenal customer service and delicious food. Visitors have praised the considerate and welcoming staff who provide warm and charismatic service. The grilled snapper, prawns, and catch of the day are particularly highlighted for their fresh taste and perfect seasoning. The restaurant's inviting atmosphere adds to the overall dining experience, making it a must-visit for those seeking excellent seafood on the island.
Super friendly staff who genuinely care if you're happy and enjoying your food. All the seafood was delicious, we loved that they brought it out uncooked to explain what you could have. The Prawns were sooo good, after our meals we asked for more Prawns, this was no issue at all and they customised it however we wanted, which was nice. Very honest and cheap pricing. We would have expected to pay more for such fresh seafood. Everything cooked to perfection, absolutely recommend 👌

Very welcoming and kind staff. We took grilled crab and lobster and it was average quality. Little meat in the pieces we got. Espresso is super strong.

Excellent value for what you get. Visited twice in one week and the strong rating was definitely accurate. Food was perfectly cooked. Octopus Vindaye was amazing! Venue is air-conditioned but also offers outdoor seating. Child friendly. Parking outside! The manager, who I will call Goldfinger, is enthusiastic and brings around a tray of seafood with all the options and prices. Well worth the drive. Definitely a good idea to book as it was full on both of our visits!

Best chicken and seafood in Mauritius, they knew we were tourists so they opened after their closing time for us, amazing service and the seafood was definitely 10/10. Unforgettable rum too!!!! You can not miss this if you are in Mauritius
Hannah L — Google review
We were welcomed by the friendliest staff ever. In the peak of the summer, the place was well aired and the AC kept it well cooled. We were greeted by a platter of fresh seafood to pick from. We chose the Curry Octopus, Curry Shrimp, Seafood Gratin, Grilled Lobster, Grilled Fish and Crab soup. All the dishes were honestly respectively the best seafood dishes I ever had on Mauritius island. The only regret is I wish I knew of this place earlier.

L'Aventure du Sucre is a museum housed in a former sugar factory, showcasing the history and cultivation of sugarcane. The museum offers an outing that pays tribute to the island's sugar industry, leading visitors through the scenic sugar cane fields to Le Mauricia domain and its impressive intendance tree alley.
My wife and I had a free day, so we decided to go to this museum. We were pleasantly surprised at how nice it is! We spent a lot of time reading about the history of sugar in Mauritius. Very interesting! The old, converted factory had much of the same equipment used from back in the day. Very cool to see up close. And it was very kid friendly! Great place to take the family. Once you’ve followed the path and reached the end, you go through the museum store where you can sample various types of sugar and try different Mauritian rums. Whew! Really strong! Overall, we really liked the museum and would highly recommend it if you’re on the north side of Mauritius. Well worth the $26.50/adult we paid for admission.
Irwin C — Google review
Really well organised museum. Not only explaining the history and processing of sugar cane, but also general history of Mauritius. We were really impressed by the audio guide too, explaining a good amount of detail. If you visit one museum then it should be this one! The restaurant on site is great for a lunch or drink after your visit too
Selina Z — Google review
Brilliant museum, very engaging and interesting. Lots of information and displays that are informative and well set out. Additional information boards are available along the way for those wanting much more printed information and text. Displays in both French and English. Well worth a visit, would definitely recommend.
Emma M — Google review
I visited L'Aventure du Sucre with mixed expectations, thinking it would be a simple rum tasting experience. But I was pleasantly surprised to discover a richly preserved piece of history housed in a beautifully appointed and curated museum. The exhibits expertly told the story of the island's sugar industry, and I found myself engrossed in the history and culture. The rum tasting was also a highlight, with a variety of flavours to sample. The rum was top-notch, and I appreciated the opportunity to learn about the production process. Overall, L'Aventure du Sucre exceeded my expectations, offering a unique blend of history, culture, and rum. The museum is a must-visit for anyone interested in the island's heritage, and the rum tasting is a delightful bonus. I would highly recommend this destination to anyone looking for a memorable experience. The combination of history, education, and indulgence makes for a fantastic outing.

This was an amazing experience! There is so much information about the history of Mauritius and of sugar. We stayed much longer than planned to see it all. The size of the facility and the machines is great, you can see everything and you can even do a sugar tasting and taste the sugar cane itself. Don't leave Mauritius without coming here!
Cynthia H — Google review
Really well down museum. An old sugar processing plant converted into a museum telling the story of indentured labour in Mauritius. There is also a sugar tasting at the end and a shop selling souvenirs, rum etc.

Great history lesson at the distillery! Worth the trip and tastings. My one recommendation would be to have more variety of the smaller bottles to buy.

Château de Labourdonnais is a splendid Victorian mansion located in a natural estate, offering visitors the chance to immerse themselves in the 19th-century Mauritian lifestyle. Visitors can explore the gardens, visit the distillery for rum tastings, and savor locally produced Rhum at the Rhumerie des Mascareignes.
Incredible historic place giving an idea of how life has been one and a half centuries ago as a landlord on Ile de France. Really well maintained park and lovely restored building! Worth a visit!

A stunning house typical of the American colonial style and with a lot of family history. There's almost no reference to the life of the slaves upon whose backs the money was made.....maybe that reflects the fact that the family still live and work here. Either way it's a sad omission in an otherwise impressive place
Guy B — Google review
Beautiful place with so much historic significance. We spend walking around the estate and soaking up the history. There is free rum tasting included in the ticket. The rums are brewed there locally. Which was a great experience. There are also farm animals to engage your kids

A beautiful, magical place for a special occasion. We were very well looked after, the food was very good and the DJ took us back to our roots with an outstanding selection. From the cocktails to the dinner itself, everything was perfect.

The Labourdonnais estate has been home to the Wiehe family for over 150 years. Established in 1856, it underwent extensive renovations in 2006 to preserve its elegant 19th-century colonial architecture. After your visit, take a stroll through the lovely gardens and historic orchard. The estate preserves endemic plants and also boasts over 50 centuries-old mango trees, spices, and many tropical fruit trees. You can also try the estate's own rum or juice at the tasting bar. After your visit, dine at the adjacent restaurant.
SOFIA C — Google review
"This destination is worth the visit. The stunning gardens are meticulously maintained, and the historic preservation is impeccable. I spent a leisurely few hours exploring the grounds, taking in the beauty and learning about the rich history. Depending on your pace, you can easily spend anywhere from 1 to 5 hours here, uncovering the secrets and marvels that this place has to offer. The attention to detail and commitment to preserving the past is evident throughout. Whether you're a history buff, a nature lover, or simply looking for a peaceful escape, this place has something for everyone. I appreciated the flexibility to explore at my own pace, taking time to appreciate the intricate details and stories behind each exhibit. Overall, I highly recommend this destination to anyone looking for a unique and enriching experience. The combination of stunning gardens and well-preserved history makes for a truly unforgettable visit. I'll definitely be back to explore more!

Good atmosphere with many objects from the past (vintage cars, old clocks and instruments, and even a small plane!…). You can see local trees and birds in the parking/garden area). Amazing place, incredible food and atmosphere. Can’t come to mauritius and not stop by this restaurant. The owner has this amazing collection of old cars and it’s just so awesome.

We did not feel welcome and I personally feel the lady despises locals. I tried to book a table the day prior but they close pretty early which is fine. However when I told her I was trying to book a table her response was pretty cold. Fair enough, we were 3 adults and one teenager. My kid and my bf are both non locals and speak English and when she came she started speaking french so I asked to speak English and her tone changed. She did not sound pleased. We were sat down to the smallest table and a french family of 4 came and got the next biggest table. Our space was small but we tried to have a good time regardless until one of our glasses fell and at that point it did not make any sense to order more drinks. We still had to pay for the drink that fell. The food looked beautiful but was absolutely tasteless. Every time me or my daughter would use the bathroom she would follow right after probably checking if we were civilised enough for her restaurant. I have travelled in multiple countries in my entire life, never thought I would be treated like a last class citizen in my own country! By the time we left, the bigger tables were still empty. If you are a ✋🏻 person you will be welcome but if youre ✋🏿 just spend your money somewhere else. P.s. I will not bother reading their reply.

The saddest lunch experience I’ve ever had. The food was terrible, and the hostess was unfriendly. The only good thing was the car collection, but it’s not worth going through such an unpleasant experience just to see it.”

Great ambience, very friendly and nice owner & staff. A more extensive menu would have tipped them over into a full 5🌟. The venue and location are really cool. One of the owners is into vintage cars and some of them are displayed on the property. Very instagrammable place.
