Taumarunui in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Taumarunui, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Taumarunui is a small riverside town in the central North Island, known as a gateway to outdoor adventures in the Ruapehu and Whanganui regions. It sits near Tongariro and Whanganui National Parks, giving easy access to hiking, mountain biking, canoeing and jet boating. The town is also a base for trips along the scenic Forgotten World Highway and popular rail cart tours on disused railway lines. Anglers come for trout fishing in the Whanganui and Ongarue rivers, set amid classic rural New Zealand landscapes.
With favorites like Pizza K More, Te Peka Lookout, and Nevalea Alpacas, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Rusty Nail Tavern and Pizza K More so you can get the best taste of Taumarunui while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

An Unforgettable Alpaca Experience Our family's 90-minute alpaca adventure was the highlight of our trip! Booking online saved us money ($59 adults/$49 kids vs walk-in prices) and guaranteed our spot - highly recommend as walk-ins aren't always available. From the moment we arrived, we were immersed in the wonderful world of alpacas! The experience included: Hand-feeding these gentle, fluffy creatures (their soft noses tickling our palms!) Walking two alpacas** through breathtaking farm scenery (family pass includes 2 alpacas) Cuddling adorable baby alpacas- don't forget your camera for perfect selfies! Learning alpaca facts and how their fiber becomes luxurious clothing Making felted alpaca soap- a fun craft and special souvenir Browsing the farm shop with beautiful handmade alpaca products What made it exceptional: ✓ Knowledgeable, passionate guides ✓ Perfect 1.5-2 hour duration (arrive 10 mins early for safety briefing) ✓ Stunning photo ops at every turn ✓ Thoughtful touches like the felted soap craft ✓ Discounted online booking prices For families, couples or solo travelers, this is a must-do activity that's both educational and incredibly fun. The alpacas' personalities will charm you, the scenery will relax you, and the handmade products (we bought the softest alpaca wool hat!) make perfect mementos. Final tip:Wear farm-appropriate shoes, bring your camera, and come ready to fall in love with these amazing animals! We'll definitely be back - maybe next time we'll try the morning tea picnic option!

We were more than happy to have that opportunity to visit this Alpacas 🦙 farm. The CUTEST thing during our 1 week holiday! They were so soft, so calm, created so much joy for all our family members! Highly recommended to visit!
Elena Z — Google review
I can’t believe I almost passed up cuddling baby Tux. Highly recommend stopping at Nevalea Alpacas and learning all the incredible characteristics of these adorable animals. Leonie was very accommodating and answered all our many questions about Alpacas and their experience farming them. We were staying nearby for the weekend (group of kiwis), all loved the experience. We thought the walk involved with the “ultimate experience” might be more than we wanted, but it’s just a slow gentle climb uphill at own pace with an Alpaca buddy to lead. Even if you’re not the fittest, this is fine. Facilities are good, gift shop full of things to choose from. I’m obsessed with my Alpaca socks!
Anthea W — Google review
It was such an amazing experience! I get to walk with an alpaca, feed them, and pat them. I also gained some knowledge about them. Thank you for the wonderful experience!
Hui T — Google review
Love it! Came to visit here from Finland and worth it! Alpacas are so cute and well cared for! Lovely owner!
Tiina S — Google review
I found Nevalea by driving by on the way to Mount Ruapehu and saw the Alpacas in the front paddock. I booked in to walk an alpaca which was a really nice walk with Prescott. The alpacas are super soft and so curious coming up to say hello as we walked around. I got to feed some of the alpacas and hold a baby alpaca that was only a day old. I'd definitely recommend checking out Nevalea and going for a little walk with the alpacas.

Taumarunui Railway Station

Train station
Taumarunui Railway Station is a must-visit destination in Taumarunui, New Zealand. The station yard houses abandoned metro trains from Auckland and offers fantastic views, making it an excellent spot for photography enthusiasts. The historical station premises have been tidied up and modernized to create an eclectic environment with smart finishing and painting that gives it a more welcoming appearance.
An eclectic environment. Historical station premises have been tidied up, and to some extent, modernised. More open air and upmarket than its former feel/look. Some smart finishing and painting give it a more welcome and friendly appearance. Enhancements seem to be continuing. A local facility in the heart of Taumarunui near to clean toilets and a nice range of retail facilities - including a nice range of bakery, cafes and restaurants. Local staff/team members have a sense of the special site in addition to being a functional service centre.

A big thank you to the 2 fantastic staff members who were very helpful and friendly! They made us feel very welcome in Taumaranui! Great kids, books about NZ were on sale, and we bought one for our grandson. There are lots of things to buy and free pamphlets to help plan your journey. My husband especially liked the working miniature trainset layout. We will pop in again in a months time when we are on another adventure! Kind regards, Alison and Derek Hobbs

Te Peka Lookout, located at the end of Byers Avenue in Taumarunui, offers a 15-minute climb through bush to reach panoramic views over the town and surrounding countryside. The rural surroundings provide an invigorating experience, with endless country views stretching out before you. While the view from the lookout is not described as amazing, there are opportunities for enjoyable walks through slightly overgrown paths on the mountain. Visitors can also opt for a more leisurely drive to reach the lookout.
A beautiful historic town, that's had a fair share of decline. From the lookout, you will see Tauramunui is located in a wide fertile sheltered valley.

Stunning views over Taumarunui and surrounding areas. Hike up the steps or if you’re not that way inclined take the easier option and drive to the lookout. Beautiful spot with a few picnic tables, a nice grassy area and undercover shelter. Worth visiting when in Taumarunui!
Sarah W — Google review
This is a moderate to steep climb to the top. Take the time to view the beautiful scenery in between. I'm an average walker, and I walk to the lookout every week. At a pace, it takes me about 7 minutes. The views at the top is spectacular. I don't walk down the track for fear of slipping, I decline through the streets, which is very relaxing. .

Te Peka Street

Te Peka Street is not just about the stunning lookout; it also offers a delightful opportunity to explore the Te Peka Reserve. Nestled on the scenic face that overlooks the Ongarue River, this reserve is undergoing a transformation thanks to the efforts of dedicated locals. They are actively clearing and planting 2.65 hectares of land, aiming to establish a vibrant native bush reserve that showcases the region's natural beauty. A visit here promises both breathtaking views and an appreciation for community-driven conservation efforts!

Nestled in a charming locale, the Rusty Nail Tavern is a delightful little pub that truly captures the essence of warm hospitality. With its cozy atmosphere and limited seating—about ten tables inside and some outdoor options—it may be small, but it certainly packs a punch when it comes to service. The owner, Raj, goes above and beyond to ensure every guest feels welcomed and well taken care of.
What a great little pub! It is not much to look at and is not big - about 10 tables in the front public bar area and then some outside - but what it lacks in size it more than makes up for in the hospitality offered by owner/bartender/manager Raj. I have visited country pubs throughout Australia (not so much in NZ) and they are generally known for their hospitality but Raj takes this to another level. He knows and looks after all the locals - from the blue rinse set to the young bucks - and also goes out of his way to engage with visitors such as us, even tho many would never be back (tho we went twice). There was a great easy-going atmosphere through the pub - no bouncers needed. Everyone was friendly and just enjoying a feed and a few drinks. And on the night we were there, Raj was doing it all - serving and delivering drinks and taking food orders. But he was unfazed and it reflected in the relaxed atmosphere of the pub itself. The food is great also - a cut above pub bistro food. I think everyone in the pub on the Sunday night we were there had dinner there- and there was also a constant stream of locals coming in to get takeaway, particularly the pizzas. Raj is to be congratulated in building a great community pub - and no visit to Taumarunui would be complete without a visit

Food was tasty and a good value for money – we had the chicken schnitzel and fish and chips, both were great. Service was friendly too. Good spot for drinks and dinner in Taumaranui.

Don't be put off by appearances. If we had not been told by locals that this place was good, we would have walked past it. It may lack character but it made up for it with excellent, friendly service and great food at a reasonable price. Highly recommend it.

Fantastic! Delicious burger and fresh fries for a low price. Very unassuming venue but don’t miss out on this place. Friendly service, great food and good portion size.

The service was excellent, with a friendly team that made us feel welcome. The food was delicious, beautifully prepared, and visually appealing. The burgers were among the best we've ever had—fresh, soft, and incredibly tasty! Really great pricing too. I will definitely travel through here again just for the food & beautiful scenery. We actually returned that evening for dinner and tried some different dishes, and we were just as impressed! Even though it was a super busy night and fully booked, the team still made room for our big family and provided outstanding service. Thank you so much! We truly enjoyed our time in Taumarunui and dining with you. Highly recommend!
Nicolette C — Google review
Wow what a diamond of a small pub. What is lacks in size it makes up for in atmosphere, great food and the best service. We were looked after by owner, who took our orders, no writing down he popped it in his head and didn't screw up once on whose dish was who's. A super star, the rest of the team were helpful and friendly, food was above the usual pub food, very nice
Jenny D — Google review
Just a fairly simple kind of place. Beer is well priced. Good food at a good price and atmosphere that is warm and friendly. Pretty cool little bar and grill. Call in and have a look.

We had ordered vegetable pizza it was so good, friendly staff and nice automospear to spend some time in weekend.

Not your routine pizza place. It's neither traditional pizza nor Indian. While it tries to be creative with menu, what gets delivered is far from what it should taste or even look like. Even their fries are rock hard. Would not recommend this place.
Randeep T — Google review
From the outside it looks very cute, and the inside could be, but it feels rather like there’s no thought put into it, the decor is a bit random, the service was quick and lovely, however the pizza wasn’t the best, for the price I think If you didn’t care about having good food it would fine, but it was disappointing, investing a little in dressing the interior up and a proper pizza dough would really make it stand out, but as it is, it’s just a bit disappointing, I would love to see some love put into it.
Lila L — Google review
Cheap and nasty. Tinned mushrooms, mozzarella is cheddar. Pepperoni is not. A most unpleasant experience.
