The Redwoods Treewalk is a unique experience located in the iconic Whakarewarewa Forest, featuring 28 suspension bridges that take you through redwood trees over 120 years old. By day, it offers an extraordinary recreational walk, while at night, it becomes a magical setting for photography. The treewalk provides an opportunity to explore one of New Zealand's oldest exotic forests from a new perspective.
I booked the Day & Night Combo, and it turned out to be one of the most memorable highlights of my trip. Experiencing the forest in both daylight and after dark felt like visiting two completely different worlds. 🌞 Daytime Walk The daytime walk was calm, refreshing, and a chance to truly appreciate the natural beauty of the towering redwoods. Walking along the suspension bridges, high among the treetops, gave me a unique perspective of the forest floor below and the incredible height of the trees above. The light filtering through the canopy created a peaceful atmosphere, and I had plenty of time to slow down and soak it all in. The design features along the walk — including the wooden lanterns and artistic touches — blended seamlessly with the lush ferns and native plants. Even in daylight, these installations added colour and character to the natural landscape. 🌌 Nighttime Walk Once the sun went down, the forest completely transformed. Hundreds of lanterns designed by David Trubridge lit up the night in intricate patterns and soft glows, giving the forest an enchanting, almost magical feel. Walking across the bridges at night felt like entering a fantasy world — glowing shapes hanging among the trees, a giant illuminated bird in flight, and the forest floor bathed in vibrant lighting. What I loved most was the contrast: during the day, it’s about appreciating nature’s raw beauty; at night, it’s about immersing yourself in an art installation that brings the forest alive in a new and unexpected way. 💡 Overall The Day & Night Combo is the best way to experience the Redwoods Treewalk because it shows you two sides of the same forest — one tranquil and grounding, the other magical and dreamlike. The staff were welcoming, the walkways felt safe but adventurous, and the entire experience was well worth it. Highly recommended: If you’re in Rotorua, this is an absolute must-do.

Absolutely breathtaking! The towering redwoods create such a serene and calming atmosphere—it’s impossible not to feel at peace here. The trails are well-maintained, the air is fresh, and every corner feels like stepping into a natural wonder. Perfect for hiking, photography, or simply reconnecting with nature. Highly recommend this experience to anyone looking to escape the hustle and recharge in one of the most scenic forests I’ve ever visited!

Super late review! Brought my cousin here for a short holiday. He lives in SG and said what he loves most about NZ is how close it is to nature — everything feels so natural (since most of SG is man-made). We went up the tree walk with my young kids and they loved it! Such a peaceful and refreshing experience. Definitely a must-do when in Rotorua.

The Redwoods Nightlights in Rotorua was nice, but honestly not as amazing as I expected. The lights and atmosphere were beautiful, and it’s definitely something unique to experience once. However, the ticket price felt a bit expensive for what it was, and there were way too many people when I went. We had to wait quite a while to get on the walkway, and it got pretty cold later in the evening. It’s still a cool experience, especially for families or first-time visitors, but I’d recommend going early and bringing warm clothes. Overall, not bad — just a bit overpriced and too crowded for me.
Alex L — Google review
Prior warning there's a long wait. We were in the queue for over an hour. The long wait is not because of an inefficiency but for our own safety. But the wait is worth it. I recommend going at night. Because once they are lit, it is lit. The glowworm cave is an added bonus.
Devin N — Google review
Two star for the price. Ive wanted to do this for years, but the price was a barrier. Finally decided to take the kids, and saw a walking enterance! Pro tip - there's a free walking track under the loop! We went there at night and in the morning. The paid walk is literally to use the bridge. I was a bit shocked at how steep the price is for such a short distance. But the walk itself is stunning and a must do! (Bridge optional if you have money to burn)

Fabulous tree top walk. Very interesting and informative. Would love to do again at night to see the light show. The Glow worms (only just opened) were incredible!

A chance to walk amongst the Redwood trees of Rotorua but up above not on the ground. Apparently this is the world’s longest living tree walk. Easy to park and easy to get tickets from the isite shop. It’s only a 40min walk with an option to walk 20 metres higher which you must do

Redwoods – Whakarewarewa Forest is a picturesque redwood forest in Rotorua, New Zealand. It offers walking, biking, and horse-riding trails with convenient toilet facilities. The forest features majestic Californian redwoods reaching over 70 meters in height and beautiful native trees. Planted in the early 20th century, these redwoods have thrived and grow even faster than in their native habitat. The extensive network of mountain biking trails makes it a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts.
Absolutely gorgeous experience. Lots of amazing and Beautiful trails to walk, various lengths so you can plan the day putting well. Moderate level of fitness required. Breathtaking views at one point. Lots of animals. There are even horse tracks and biking tracks also. Decent parking. Visitors centre here also. It's also the access area to the redwoods tree walk.
Gingerbeardclown — Google review
A fantastic experience. I didn't think I was good with heights but doing the night treetop walk was so beautiful with all the lanterns and sculptures lit up. We also did the daytime walk which gives even more perspective of the size of the Redwoods. If you can only choose one, definitely do the night walk. Also, you are able to walk a loop track through the forest (with dogs on leash) for free.
M J — Google review
The hiking trip was a great experience, made even better by the clear and easy-to-follow signage along the trails. The signs not only guided the way but also provided a range of walking options with different time durations, making it convenient to choose a route that suited our pace and preference. The variety ensured that both casual walkers and more seasoned hikers could enjoy the area comfortably.

We went just after a coupe of days of non-stop rain and personally was worried it will be ruined but found it just as exiting and quite fresh and alive due to the rain. Well worth the visit and highly recommended, even our 4 year old really enjoyed it.

Great open forest with amazing open spaces, a decent river for off lead dogs on one side and the mtb, walking trails, and on lead dog space on the other. So much range, easy trails, different woods and people, excellent for a chill ride, good jog or run, or just a wander as you head to the cafe.

the redwood nightlight treewalk was brilliant.Zero waiting time, small manageable crowd, all because it was not school holiday yet in nz 😄 loved the walk! laterns were beautiful. The only thing was we couldnt read the info provided in between the hanging bridges coz it was dark😂 this walk was on my MUST to do list in nz!

Beautiful, even in the rain!! The trees are incredible, we didn't have much time so took the Memorial Grove Trail. The trail is short enough that we were able to get coffee at the end and be back in the car within the hour. Don't worry about the trail being too short to fully immerse yourself either, just stunning!

This is a fantastic place for all kinds of people! We went with 9 ladies for a hens do to the mini golf and had a great time. There is lots more to do as well, it would be perfect for kids during the school holidays or weekends. There is a cafe on site too with lots of food and drink options We will definitely be back next time we are in Rotorua!

The arcade use to be so good but extremely disappointing now! About a dozen games out of order! Also basket ball, clowns, beanbag throw and skitter ball games all missing balls/bags only 1 to 3 on each so you lose time waiting for them to come back down! Sad to say it was a waste of money and time. Hopefully you can sort it out and give people a credit that have come in recent times with everything broken like this
Karen L — Google review
The place looks fun at first, but the games are generally very short – over before you really get into them. That kind of takes the fun out of it. A few machines also seem poorly maintained. For example, some don’t even show high scores, and the Wild West shooting game only had one of the two player stations working. Overall, it feels like more effort should go into maintenance and gameplay length to make the experience worth it.

We went to the trampoline area only, on a Sunday morning (in the middle of the school holidays), arriving 10:10 and so getting into the first of the hour-long sessions. Our grandson was the only “customer” on the trampolines and got excellent attention, advice, demonstrations, interaction, and encouragement from the two young men on duty in this area. At 11:00, the multitudes arrived but our charge had had a good time and was ready to go, in body if not in mind. It was expensive ($17.50) for the 6-year old but I could see the Overheads overhead, and the staff in attendance ready for the numbers to increase lad the day progressed. We were allowed in gratis to observe from an adjacent comfortable bench. The facilities seemed newly-constructed, so I wish them all the best for this venue, very suitable for a rainy day.

The arcade has gone DOWNHILL! Went today games out of order. Basketballs missing from hoop games and the ones that were there were peeling and old…how hard is it to replace these 🥴 one staff lady was ignoring customers by walking up to computer where they serve and walking away to do nothing!!!! leaving the young lady to serve everyone 😵‍💫 wont be back…this was the photo of my one ball i had for my game lol

The Dark Ride at Motion Entertainment could be a fun experience, but it was let down by poor service. there were no winner photos available, and we were given various excuses instead of a proper explanation or solution. The ride itself was decent, but the follow-up service definitely needs improvement.

Te Ngae Shopping Centre is a quaint local mall that offers a range of conveniences for the community. It features small shops including a greengrocer, takeaways, cafes, and ATMs. While some areas may need refurbishment, it provides ample parking and decent options for shopping and dining. Visitors can enjoy the relaxed atmosphere and find essentials without the flashy frills of larger malls.

A very Dirty shopping centre rubbish outside shops.looks like the paving needs a good scrub down or water blasting
Denise F — Google review
With all the shopping malls being built nearby and the lakefront it's easy to see the empty stores and how run down this shopping center has become. Yes I know this is harsh but that's reality in these times. The 4 square, meat market and usual food shops with hardware store being the main business here. Don't get me wrong what is here has die hard customers and the staff are always well mannered and helpful. I left here 13 years ago but I still call in to the Te Ngae takeaways when passing through. Abit of a shame as the shopping centre was once a thriving business center.

There is a bakery tucked into a corner.... Papas bakery? Anyway... The food is as close as possible to the old fashion bakery food I was treated to as a child. The apple squares taste of heavenly delight.... Perfect blend of apples, cinnamon and the cake part is devine. At the rate I eat these.. I'm gonna die young! 😂

This use to be the best shopping mall to go to. There use to be a supermarket 3 GUYS once that closed everything changed. Still a great place to get takeaway food, Mad Butchers, 4 Square, Bakery, Pharmacy. So if you are ever out that way good place to visit.

Mokoia Island

Island
Mokoia Island, situated in the middle of Lake Rotorua in New Zealand, is a sacred and uninhabited land with significant cultural and ecological importance. It serves as a wildlife sanctuary for rare and endangered bird species, offering guided tours that provide opportunities to spot indigenous birds like kiwi, kokako, and saddleback.
This distinctive little island is very visible on a cloudless day from the air as one flys overhead from Wellington to Rotorua. Hot Springs are numerous around this volcanic area and it seems totally natural & not surprising that this wee island has its own hot springs. Mokoia Island is sacred to the Te Arawa people and birthplace of Tutanekai, who is one of two central characters in the famous love story legend of Tutanekai & Hinemoa. Like most love stories it ends happily!
Margaret C — Google review
Mokoia Island sits somewhere in the middle of Lake Rotorua. It is privately owned by a local Maori tribe, who consider the site to be quite sacred. The tiny island, which has an area of 1.35 square kilometres (0.52 square miles), is a rhyolite lava dome, with geothermal springs and hot pools abound. Mokoia Island is considered a protected bird sanctuary and, as such, is only ever open to a small number of tour groups at any given time.

Guests can indulge in hot pancakes, rich lattes, and refreshing frappes while enjoying the friendly service from a staff that clearly enjoys their work. Rather underwhelmed with our recent visit to the coffee club. We make this a weekly visit with the kids after a bike ride in the forest. We usually order a coffee, smoothie and iced chocolate which they were to normal standards. However the hot chips were almost a side portion. Extremely disappointed with the amount we paid of $14.50 for a ‘Large bowl of Seasoned fries’. You used to get the whole plate with the sauces stacked on top. Hopefully management/chefs reconsider the amount they are serving their patrons
Zoe B — Google review
My daily coffee addiction started here! While staying at a lake house in Rotorua, I decided to order delivery from The Coffee Club. Big mistake... I got completely hooked on their cappuccinos! What started as a one off order turned into my essential morning ritual. I really wanted the Giant, Fluffy Blueberry pancake with Mascarpone, but was looking for a healthier option and their Mushroom, Feta, & Spinach Open Omelette was delicious. The portion was massive, way more than I expected. Plus the wholegrain ciabatta was perfectly crisp, just the way it should be. Every morning I found myself reaching for my phone to order another cappuccino. The quality was so consistent that it became the best part of waking up during my stay. The Coffee Club knows how to do breakfast right. Great coffee, generous portions, and food that actually tastes amazing when it arrives. Already planning my next Rotorua trip and you can bet I'll be ordering from them again. If you're in Rotorua and want proper coffee and a hearty breakfast, this is your spot. Just don't blame me when you get as addicted to their cappuccinos as I did! Also, their cup designs are adorable and fun!

Really nice brunch. Friendly service, efficient and good prices too. Liked this one, would go back again. Place was clean and pretty busy but no delays between ordering and food and drinks arriving.
Jonathan B — Google review
I came to this place for a Friday brunch, and overall it was a very disappointing experience—made worse by the shocking sight of a rat running around inside the café. To start with the food: I ordered the smashed avocado and the vegan ciabatta sandwich, but unfortunately, neither dish was enjoyable. Both were served cold, lacked seasoning, and tasted bland. The smashed avocado dish was especially underwhelming—the pumpkin and mushrooms were soggy and cold, which really impacted the overall texture and flavor. My wife and I ended up leaving half our meals untouched simply because they weren’t appetizing. On a more positive note, the vanilla latte I ordered was actually quite good and was the only part I finished. However, just as we were leaving after using the bathroom, a rat suddenly appeared inside the café. Staff and customers scrambled to catch it, creating an unsettling and chaotic scene. Eventually, it was caught and placed in a box by a staff member, which only raised further concerns about the hygiene and cleanliness of the establishment. Given the poor food quality, high prices, and serious hygiene issues, this is not a place I would return to or recommend for brunch.

Delicious food, great service, and a calm atmosphere. We visited on a Sunday, so it appeared quiet and calm inside. Parking available, toilets, and there is enough room to navigate through the tables. Staff were friendly, courteous, and polite.

Absolutely loved my visit to this café! The food was delicious and beautifully presented — fresh, flavorful, and generous in portion size, definitely worth the money. The protein smoothie was amazing — perfectly balanced, rich, and refreshing! The staff were super friendly and welcoming, creating such a lovely, relaxed atmosphere. The place itself is bright and inviting, with plenty of parking which makes it even more convenient. Overall, a fantastic experience — great food, great vibes, and great service. Can’t wait to come back again! 🌿☕💛
